Estimating gross primary production (GPP) is important to understand the land-atmosphere CO2 exchange for major agroecosystems. Eddy covariance (EC) measurements provide accurate and reliable information about GPP, but flux measurements are often not available. Upscaling strategies gain importance as an alternative to the limitations of the use of the EC. Although potato is an important agroecosystem for worldwide carbon balances, there are currently no studies on potato GPP upscaling processes. This study reports two GPP scaling-up approaches from the detailed leaf-level characterization of gas exchange of potato. Multilayer and big leaf approaches were applied for extrapolating chamber and biometric measurements from leaf to canopy. Measurements of leaf area index and photosynthesis were performed from planting to the end of the canopy life cycle with a LP-80 ceptometer and a IRGA Li-Cor 6800, respectively. The results were compared to concurrent measurements of surface-atmosphere GPP from the EC technique. Big-leaf models were able to simulate the general trend of GPP during the growth cycle, but they overestimated the GPP during the maximum LAI phase. Multilayer models correctly reproduced the behavior of potato GPP and closely predicted both the daily magnitude and half-hourly variation in GPP when compared to EC measurements. Upscaling is a reliable alternative, but the good treatment of LAI and net photosynthetic light-response curve are decisive factors to get better GPP estimates. The results improved the knowledge of the biophysical control in the carbon fluxes of the potato crop.

One of the most important dry agroecosystems in Colombia is found in the northern Guajira region, which has native inhabitants (sociocultural aspect) and semiarid zones (ecological aspect). This condition has resulted in great vulnerability in agricultural production systems to adverse climatic events, which require large scale action. For example, the establishment of agroclimatic suitability zones are needed to access information, for decision-making. The aim of this study was to carry out agroclimatic zoning in the municipality of Uribia (La Guajira) for agricultural production systems and animal feed species. The criteria used to identify the agroclimatic suitability zones included: plant coverage present in the municipality, soil suitability, water storage under water stress, regular conditions found in the municipality, and an extreme water deficit event. The evaluated conditions showed variations in agroclimatic suitability during the periods January to April and August to November. During an extreme water-deficit event between August and November, the suitable area for the establishment of production systems with plant species (type C3 and C4) was smaller (77,000 ha) than in the period January to April (130,000 ha). The agroclimatic suitability categories in Uribia did not exhibit differences between the evaluated periods under average water-deficit conditions. RESUMEN En el norte de la Guajira encontramos uno de los ecosistemas secos más importantes de Colombia desde el punto de vista sociocultural y ecológico. Esta condición genera una gran vulnerabilidad de sus sistemas agropecuarios a eventos climáticos extremos, razón por la cual varias acciones son requeridas para reducirla. Dentro de las acciones se encuentra el establecimiento de zonas de aptitud agroclimática, una fuente de acceso a información que permite tomar decisiones. El objetivo de este estudio fue realizar una zonificación agroclimática del municipio de Uribia (La Guajira) para sistemas de producción agrícola y especies de alimentación animal. Los criterios utilizados para realizar la identificación de las zonas de aptitud incluyeron: coberturas vegetales presentes, aptitud de suelos, almacenamiento de agua bajo estrés hídrico, condiciones regulares climáticas y un evento de déficit hídrico extremo. Las condiciones evaluadas registraron variaciones en la aptitud agroclimática desde enero a abril y desde agosto a noviembre. Bajo la condición de déficit hídrico extremo entre agosto y noviembre, el área apta para el establecimiento de sistemas de producción con especies agrícolas (tipo C3 y C4) fue menor (77.000 ha) comparado con el periodo de enero a abril (130.000 ha). Las categorías de aptitud agroclimática en Uribia no mostraron diferencias entre los períodos evaluados bajo condiciones de déficit hídrico promedio.

Potato farming is relevant for global carbon balances and greenhouse emissions, of which gross primary productivity (GPP) is one of the main drivers. In this study, the net carbon ecosystem exchange (NEE) was measured using the Eddy Covariance (EC) method in two potato crops, one of them with an irrigation system, the other under rainfed conditions. Accurate NEE partition into GPP and ecosystem respiration (RECO) was carried out by fitting a light response curve. Direct measurements of dry weight and leaf area were performed from sowing to the end of canopy life cycle and tuber bulking. Agricultural drought in the rainfed crop resulted in limited GPP rate, low leaf area index (LAI), and low canopy carbon assimilation response to the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Hence, in this crop, there was lower efficiency in tuber biomass gain and NEE sum indicated net carbon emissions to atmosphere (NEE = 154.7 g C m−2 ± 30.21). In contrast, the irrigated crop showed higher GPP rate and acted as a carbon sink (NEE = −366.6 g C m−2 ± 50.30). Our results show, the environmental and productive benefits of potato crops grown under optimal water supply.

Current available soil information allows building baselines to improve research, such as sustainable resource management; however, its use requires analysis of accuracy and precision that describes specific variables on local and global scales. Therefore, this study evaluated differences in the spatial distribution of water retention capacity (WRC) of the soil at a depth of 0.3 m, calculated from local general soil surveys and the global gridded soil information system (SoilGrids), using detailed or semi-detailed soil surveys as a reference, in two regions of Colombia (A and B). The qualitative and statistical analyses evaluated differences in WRC surfaces generated by the information sources. Neither information sources described WRC accurately, achieving correlations between −0.15 and 0.49 and average absolute errors between 9.65 and 19.52 mm for zones A and B, respectively. However, studies on the local scale remain within the ranges observed in the most detailed local studies. The use of products on the global scale is subject to regional analyses; nevertheless, they can be included as a covariate in digital soil mapping studies on more detailed scales.

Los avances en ciencia y tecnología combinados con la necesidad de manejar y administrar los recursos naturales han resultó en un aumento gradual en la disponibilidad de datos del suelo. Esto ha permitido caracterizar, describir o proponer proyectos para abordar cuestiones como la degradación del suelo, la productividad agrícola, las amenazas y los servicios de los ecosistemas. A pesar de la disponibilidad de datos del suelo, los usuarios buscan cada vez más información adicional, oportuna y confiable. para dar respuesta a situaciones actuales y futuras, como la seguridad alimentaria y el cambio climático. IRAKA es un suelo sistema de información para el altiplano cundiboyacense colombiano y el primero en brindar información adicional de fuentes oficiales disponibles. Tiene un diseño modular basado en la organización de una base de datos de suelos cuya estructura incorporó 299 perfiles, 1432 muestras y 55 propiedades y la integración, armonización, y estandarización de 8 estudios de suelos realizados en la zona. La información estructurada permitió modelar y validando las propiedades físicas y químicas a través del mapeo digital del suelo y comparando diferentes máquinas técnicas de aprendizaje, incluyendo bosque aleatorio, guardabosques, máquina de vectores de apoyo y modelos de conjunto de estos Técnicas Las interpolaciones de 11 propiedades cuantitativas y 1 propiedad cualitativa resultaron en aceptables coeficientes de bondad de ajuste debido a diferentes factores: variabilidad de la propiedad, representatividad, distribución en el área de estudio y descripción de la propiedad basada en covariables ambientales. Toda la información generada ha sido disponible para un uso generalizado en diferentes servicios web geográficos. Así, IRAKA contribuye a la gestión de la información y el conocimiento a través de técnicas y herramientas que permiten a los usuarios visualizar nuevos información, utilizar la información y llamar la atención sobre nuevos estudios y mejorar las bases de datos en las que la confianza el nivel es insuficiente y no permite la toma de decisiones.

Se utilizó el modelo regionalizado de lluvia Regionalisierte Niederschlage (Regnie) para interpolar la lluvia y temperatura media del aire de las regiones Andina, Caribe y Pacífica de Colombia. Este modelo integró los datos de la pendiente y exposición del terreno obtenidos del modelo digital de elevación, así como los promedios climatológicos de 1440 series de precipitación y 258 series de temperatura registradas en igual número de estaciones meteorológicas de superficie para cada variable. Se establecieron los modelos de regresión lineal múltiple de la precipitación media anual y temperatura media anual del aire, además se utilizaron herramientas de geoprocesamiento para la generación de las superficies interpoladas. Los estadísticos de prueba de las superficies Regnie fueron similares a los obtenidos con interpolaciones con los métodos Spline e IDW para precipitación (coeficiente de determinación 0.81 y error medio de 55.6 mm) y mejores para la temperatura media (coeficiente de determinación 0.99 y error medio de 0.02°C).
