Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) has long been known to fail in galaxy clusters, implying a residual missing mass problem for clusters in this context. Here, using mass profiles derived from strong- and weak-lensing shear, as well as magnification data, for a sample of clusters from the CLASH survey, we characterize the density profile of this residual MOND missing mass in the central Mpc of galaxy clusters. In line with results obtained in the literature from the hydrostatic equilibrium of hot gas, we find that an inner constant density core and an outer power-law slope between $-4$ and $-6$ provides a good description within $\sim 1$ Mpc. We also show that the data in the central parts of clusters can be even better represented by a `dark mass-follows-gas' profile with an exponential cut-off. Clusters with X-ray emitting gas masses $M_\text{gas} \geq 10^{14}\, {\rm M}_\odot$ display a remarkable uniformity for the missing-to-hot-gas density ratio in the inner parts, of order $\sim$10, and for the exponential cut-off radius, of order $\sim 450$ kpc. Clusters with lower observed gas mass display larger and more scattered values for both the density ratio and cut-off radius. These lensing results can in principle serve as a crucible for relativistic theories of MOND in galaxy clusters, or for any other tentative hypothesis regarding the nature of the clusters residual missing mass in the MOND context., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Coma cluster have velocity dispersion profiles that are in full agreement with the predictions of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) in isolation. However, the external field effect (EFE) from the cluster seriously deteriorates this agreement. It has been suggested that this could be related to the fact that UDGs are out-of-equilibrium objects whose stars have been heated by the cluster tides or that they recently fell onto the cluster on radial orbits, such that their velocity dispersion may not reflect the EFE at their instantaneous distance from the cluster center. Here, we simulate UDGs within the Coma cluster in MOND, using the Phantom of Ramses (\textsc{por}) code, and show that if UDGs are initially at equilibrium within the cluster, tides are not sufficient to increase their velocity dispersions to values as high as the observed ones. On the other hand, if they are on a first radial infall onto the cluster, they can keep high velocity dispersions without being destroyed until their first pericentric passage. We conclude that, without alterations such as a screening of the EFE in galaxy clusters or much higher baryonic masses than currently estimated, in the MOND context UDGs must be out-of-equilibrium objects on their first infall onto the cluster., Comment: 10 Pages, 9 Figures, accepted by A&A

For the last decade, several probes have pointed to a cosmological tension between the amplitude of density fluctuations extrapolated from the cosmic microwave background within the standard cosmological model and the one encapsulated by the $S_8$ parameter from large scale structure. The origin of this $S_8$ tension has not yet been elucidated and may hint at systematics in the data, unaccounted effects from baryonic physics, or new physics beyond the standard model of cosmology. Baryonic physics may in principle provide a nonlinear solution to the tension by suppressing the matter power spectrum more strongly on nonlinear scales than is traditionally assumed. Such a solution would not worsen the Hubble tension, contrary to many other proposed solutions to the $S_8$ tension. However, no realistic baryonic feedback in hydrodynamical simulations provides the needed suppression as a function of redshift. Here, we point out that a scale-dependence of local-type primordial non-Gaussianities (PNG), with significant PNG at scales of a few Mpc, can provide the needed suppression, since such PNG can suppress the power spectrum at slightly larger scales than baryons do. We demonstrate this by devising collisionless numerical simulations of structure formation in boxes of 0.5 Gpc/$h$ with scale-dependent local-type PNG. Our simple models show that, as a proof of principle, scale-dependent PNG, with a Gaussian random field for primordial density fluctuations on large scales and $f_{\rm NL} \simeq -300$ at $\lesssim 10$ Mpc scales, together with state-of-the-art baryonification of the matter power spectrum, can in principle solve the $S_8$ tension. The structure and dynamics of the central bar of the Milky Way are still under debate whilst being fundamental ingredients for the evolution of our Galaxy. The recent Gaia DR3 offers an unprecedented detailed view of the 6D phase-space of the MW. We aim to characterise the dynamical moving groups across the MW disc, and use their large-scale distribution to help constrain the properties of the Galactic bar. We used wavelet transforms of the azimuthal velocity ($V_\phi$) distribution in bins of radial velocity to robustly detect the kinematic substructure in the Gaia DR3 catalogue. We then connected these structures across the disc to measure the azimuthal ($\phi$) and radial ($R$) gradients of the moving groups. We simulated thousands of perturbed distribution functions using Backwards Integration of feasible Galaxy models that include a bar, to compare them with the data and to explore and quantify the degeneracies. The radial gradient of the Hercules moving group ($\partial V_\phi/\partial R$ = 28.1$\pm$2.8 km$\,$s$^{-1}\,$kpc$^{-1}$) cannot be reproduced by our simple models of the Galaxy which show much larger slopes both for a fast and a slow bar. This suggests the need for more complex dynamics (e.g. spiral arms, a slowing bar, external perturbations, etc.). We measure an azimuthal gradient for Hercules of $\partial V_\phi/\partial \phi$ = -0.63$\pm$0.13$\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$deg$^{-1}$ and find that it is compatible with both the slow and fast bar models. Our analysis points out that using this type of analysis at least two moving groups are needed to start breaking the degeneracies. We conclude that it is not sufficient for a model to replicate the local velocity distribution; it must also capture its larger-scale variations. The accurate quantification of the gradients, especially in the azimuthal direction, will be key for the understanding of the dynamics governing the disc. It has recently been shown that local primordial non-Gaussianities (PNG) with significant amplitude ($|f_{\rm NL}| \sim 1000$), at small (Mpc) scales, can help in forming simulated galaxies with more disky baryonic kinematics than in the Gaussian case, while generating matter power spectra that can differ by up to 20% from the Gaussian case at non-linear scales. Here, we explore in detail the consequences of such small-scale PNG on the dark matter halo profiles. We show in particular that, for negative $f_{\rm NL}$, dark matter halos formed in collisionless simulations are not always well described by the traditional Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profiles, as supported by their sparsity distribution. We conclude that NFW profiles are not as clear attractors for the density profiles of dark matter halos in the presence of PNG than in the case of a Gaussian contrast density field. We show how alternatives to the NFW profile can describe halos both in the Gaussian and non-Gaussian cases. From the combination of our sparsity analysis and the quality of the adjustments of the density profiles with a minimal extension to NFW, we conclude that $z=1$ halos carry the most interesting information about PNG, Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, JCAP accepted

Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), postulating a breakdown of Newtonian mechanics at low accelerations, has considerable success at explaining galaxy kinematics. However, the quadrupole of the gravitational field of the Solar System (SS) provides a strong constraint on the way in which Newtonian gravity can be modified. In this paper we assess the extent to which the AQUAL and QUMOND modified gravity formulations of MOND are capable of accounting simultaneously for the Radial Acceleration Relation (RAR), the Cassini measurement of the SS quadrupole and the kinematics of wide binaries in the Solar neighbourhood. We achieve this by inferring the location and sharpness of the MOND transition from the SPARC RAR under broad assumptions for the behaviour of the interpolating function and external field effect. We constrain the same quantities from the SS quadrupole, finding that this requires a significantly sharper transition between the deep-MOND and Newtonian regimes than is allowed by the RAR (an 8.7$\sigma$ tension under fiducial model assumptions). This may be relieved somewhat by allowing additional freedom in galaxies' mass-to-light ratios -- which also improves the RAR fit -- and more significantly (to 1.9$\sigma$) by removing galaxies with bulges. For the first time, we also apply to the SPARC RAR fit an AQUAL correction for flattened systems, obtaining similar results. Finally we show that the SS quadrupole constraint implies, to high precision, no deviation from Newtonian gravity in nearby wide binaries, and speculate on possible resolutions of this tension between SS and galaxy data within the MOND paradigm., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables; moderate revision, matches MNRAS published version

The most metal-poor tail of the Milky Way ([Fe/H] $\leq$ $-$2.5) contains a population of stars with very prograde planar orbits, which is puzzling in both their origin and evolution. A possible scenario is that they are shepherded by the bar from the inner Galaxy, where many of the old and low-metallicity stars in the Galaxy are located. To investigate this scenario, we use test-particle simulations with an axisymmetric background potential plus a central bar model. The test particles are generated by an extended distribution function (EDF) model based on the observational constraints of bulge stars. According to the simulation results, a bar with constant pattern speed cannot help bring stars from the bulge to the solar vicinity. In contrast, when the model includes a rapidly decelerating bar, some bulge stars can gain rotation and move outwards as they are trapped in the co-rotation regions of the bar. The resulting distribution of shepherded stars heavily depends on the present-day azimuthal angle between the bar and the Sun. The majority of the low-metallicity bulge stars driven outwards are distributed in the fourth quadrant of the Galaxy with respect to the Sun, and about 10$\%$ of them are within 6 kpc from us. Our experiments indicate that the decelerating bar perturbation can be a contributing process to explain part of the most metal-poor stars with prograde planar orbits seen in the Solar neighborhood but is unlikely to be the dominant one., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, Accepted to A&A

The most metal-poor stars (e.g. [Fe/H] $\leq-2.5$) are the ancient fossils from the early assembly epoch of our Galaxy, very likely before the formation of the thick disc. Recent studies have shown that a non-negligible fraction of them have prograde planar orbits, which makes their origin a puzzle. It has been suggested that a later-formed rotating bar could have driven these old stars from the inner Galaxy outward, and transformed their orbits to be more rotation-dominated. However, it is not clear if this mechanism can explain these stars as observed in the solar neighborhood. In this paper, we explore the possibility of this scenario by tracing these stars backwards in an axisymmetric Milky Way potential with a bar perturber. We integrate their orbits backward for 6 Gyr under two bar models: one with a constant pattern speed and another one with a decelerating speed. Our experiments show that, under the constantly-rotating bar model, the stars of interest are little affected by the bar and cannot have been shepherded from a spheroidal inner Milky Way to their current orbits. In the extreme case of a rapidly decelerating bar, some of the very metal-poor stars on planar and prograde orbits can be brought from the inner Milky Way, but $\sim90\%$ of them were nevertheless already rotation-dominated ($J_{\phi}$ $\geq$ 1000 km s$^{-1}$ kpc) 6 Gyr ago. The chance of these stars having started with spheroid-like orbits with small rotation ($J_{\phi}$ $\lesssim$ 600 km s$^{-1}$ kpc) is very low ($<$ 3$\%$). We therefore conclude that, within the solar neighborhood, the bar is unlikely to have shepherded a significant fraction of inner Galaxy spheroid stars to produce the overdensity of stars on prograde, planar orbits that is observed today., Comment: submitted to A&A, comments are welcome

We test Milgromian dynamics (MOND) using wide binary stars (WBs) with separations of $2-30$ kAU. Locally, the WB orbital velocity in MOND should exceed the Newtonian prediction by $\approx 20\%$ at asymptotically large separations given the Galactic external field effect (EFE). We investigate this with a detailed statistical analysis of $Gaia$ DR3 data on 8611 WBs within 250 pc of the Sun. Orbits are integrated in a rigorously calculated gravitational field that directly includes the EFE. We also allow line of sight contamination and undetected close binary companions to the stars in each WB. We interpolate between the Newtonian and Milgromian predictions using the parameter $\alpha_{\rm{grav}}$, with 0 indicating Newtonian gravity and 1 indicating MOND. Directly comparing the best Newtonian and Milgromian models reveals that Newtonian dynamics is preferred at $19\sigma$ confidence. Using a complementary Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis, we find that $\alpha_{\rm{grav}} = -0.021^{+0.065}_{-0.045}$, which is fully consistent with Newtonian gravity but excludes MOND at $16\sigma$ confidence. This is in line with the similar result of Pittordis and Sutherland using a somewhat different sample selection and less thoroughly explored population model. We show that although our best-fitting model does not fully reproduce the observations, an overwhelmingly strong preference for Newtonian gravity remains in a considerable range of variations to our analysis. Adapting the MOND interpolating function to explain this result would cause tension with rotation curve constraints. We discuss the broader implications of our results in light of other works, concluding that MOND must be substantially modified on small scales to account for local WBs., Comment: 48 pages, 28 figures. Tidal streams of disrupted clusters are routinely detected in the halo of the Milky Way. It was recently shown that tidal streams of open clusters can now also be detected within the disc. In this work, we highlight the fact that tidal streams provide a powerful new diagnostic of the non-axisymmetric disc potential and may provide a new constraint on the pattern speed of the Galactic bar. In particular, we show how the stream-orbit misalignment for an open cluster on a quasi-circular orbit in the solar vicinity varies as a function of the position w.r.t the bar resonances. The angular shift rises beyond corotation, reaching values as high as $30^\circ$ close to the outer Lindblad resonance (OLR), then dropping again and reversing its sign beyond the OLR. We applied this mechanism to the recently detected the Hyades stream. We note that the stream would be very similar when taking a potential with no bar or with a fast pattern speed of 55 km.s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$. However, we find that the stream is different than previously detected when adopting a potential with a bar pattern speed of $39$ km.s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$. Previously detected Hyades candidate members would, on the other hand, favour a barless or a fast bar galaxy. Interestingly, the previously reported asymmetry in star counts within the leading and trailing tails of the Hyades tidal stream persists in all cases. Our study conclusively demonstrates that the effect of disc non-axisymmetries cannot be neglected when searching for tidal streams of open clusters and that current candidate members of the Hyades stream should not be trusted beyond a distance of 200 pc from the cluster. Collisionless simulations of structure formation with significant local primordial non-Gaussianities at Mpc scales have shown that a non-Gaussian tail favouring underdensities, with a negative $f_{\rm NL}$ parameter, can significantly change the merging history of galaxy-sized dark matter halos, which then typically assemble later than in vanilla $\Lambda$CDM. Moreover, such a small-scale negative $f_{\rm NL}$ could have interesting consequences for the cosmological $S_8$ tension. Here, we complement our previous work on collisionless simulations with new hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation in boxes of 30 Mpc/$h$, using the {\sc RAMSES} code. In particular, we show that all feedback prescriptions being otherwise identical, simulations with a negative $f_{\rm NL} \sim -1000$ on small scales, hence forming galaxies a bit later than in vanilla $\Lambda$CDM, allow to form simulated galaxies with more disky kinematics than in the vanilla case. Therefore, such small-scale primordial non-Gaussianities could potentially help alleviate, simultaneously, tensions in cosmology and galaxy formation. The controversy "dark matter vs. modified gravity" constitutes a major topic of discussion. It was proposed that dynamical friction could be used to discriminate between the two alternatives. Analytic calculations indicate that, with modified gravity, globular clusters (GCs) of low-mass galaxies experience much stronger dynamical friction than in the equivalent system with Newtonian gravity and dark matter. As a result, in modified gravity the old GCs of low mass galaxies should have already settled in the centers of the galaxies. This is not observed. Here we report on our efforts to verify the analytic results by self-consistent simulations with the MOND-type (modified Newtonian dynamics) gravity. The core stalling mechanism, that was not considered in the analytic calculations, prevents GCs to settle in centers of ultra-diffuse galaxies. Observed scaling relations in galaxies between baryons and dark matter global properties are key to shed light on the process of galaxy formation and on the nature of dark matter. Here, we study the scaling relation between the neutral hydrogen (HI) and dark matter mass in isolated rotationally-supported disk galaxies at low redshift. We first show that state-of-the-art galaxy formation simulations predict that the HI-to-dark halo mass ratio decreases with stellar mass for the most massive disk galaxies. We then infer dark matter halo masses from high-quality rotation curve data for isolated disk galaxies in the local Universe, and report on the actual universality of the HI-to-dark halo mass ratio for these observed galaxies. This scaling relation holds for disks spanning a range of 4 orders of magnitude in stellar mass and 3 orders of magnitude in surface brightness. Accounting for the diversity of rotation curve shapes in our observational fits decreases the scatter of the HI-to-dark halo mass ratio while keeping it constant. This finding extends the previously reported discrepancy for the stellar-to-halo mass relation of massive disk galaxies within galaxy formation simulations to the realm of neutral atomic gas. Our result reveals that isolated galaxies with regularly rotating extended HI disks are surprisingly self-similar up to high masses, which hints at mass-independent self-regulation mechanisms that have yet to be fully understood., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. Disc stars from the Gaia DR3 RVS catalogue are selected to explore the phase spiral as a function of position in the Galaxy. The data reveal a two-armed phase spiral pattern in the local $z-v_z$ plane inside the solar radius, which appears clearly when colour-coded by $\langle v_R \rangle (z,v_z)$: this is characteristic of a breathing mode that can in principle be produced by in-plane non-axisymmetric perturbations. We note the phase spiral pattern becomes single armed outside the solar radius. When a realistic analytic model with an axisymmetric background potential plus a steadily rotating bar and 2-armed spiral arms as perturbation is used to perform particle test integrations, the pseudo stars get a prominent spiral pattern in the $\langle v_R \rangle$ map in the $x-y$ plane. Additionally, clear breathing mode evidence at a few $\rm{kms}^{-1}$ level can be seen in the $\langle v_z \rangle$ map on the $x-z$ plane, confirming that such breathing modes are non-negligible in the joint presence of a bar and spiral arms. However, no phase-spiral is perceptible in the $(z, v_z)$ plane. When an initial vertical perturbation is added to all pseudo stars to carry out the simulation, the one-armed phase spirals can clearly be seen 500~Myr after the perturbation and gradually disappear inside-out. Finally, we show as a proof of concept how a toy model of a time-varying non-axisymmetric in-plane perturbation with varying amplitude and pattern speed can produce a strong two-armed phase-spiral. We conclude a time-varying strong internal perturbation together with an external vertical perturbation could perhaps explain the transition between the two-armed and one-armed phase-spirals around the Solar radius., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We conduct hydrodynamical MOND simulations of isolated disc galaxies over the stellar mass range $M_{\star}/M_\odot = 10^7 - 10^{11}$ using the adaptive mesh refinement code \textsc{phantom of ramses} (\textsc{por}), an adaptation of the \textsc{ramses} code with a Milgromian gravity solver. The scale lengths and gas fractions are based on observed galaxies, and the simulations are run for 5~Gyr. The main aim is to see whether existing sub-grid physics prescriptions for star formation and stellar feedback reproduce the observed main sequence and reasonably match the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation that captures how the local and global star formation rates relate to other properties. Star formation in the models starts soon after initialisation and continues as the models evolve. The initialized galaxies indeed evolve to a state which is on the observed main sequence, and reasonably matches the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. The available formulation of sub-grid physics is therefore adequate and leads to galaxies that largely behave like observed galaxies, grow in radius, and have flat rotation curves $-$ provided we use Milgromian gravitation. Furthermore, the strength of the bars tends to be inversely correlated with the stellar mass of the galaxy, whereas the bar length strongly correlates with the stellar mass. Irrespective of the mass, the bar pattern speed stays constant with time, indicating that dynamical friction does not affect the bar dynamics. The models demonstrate Renzo's rule and form structures at large radii, much as in real galaxies. In this framework, baryonic physics is thus sufficiently understood to not pose major uncertainties in our modelling of global galaxy properties., Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures. WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. Bar formation in cosmological simulations of galaxy formation remains challenging. It was previously shown that the fraction of barred galaxies at low stellar masses ($M_*<10^{10.5} M_\odot$) in TNG50 is too low compared to observations. Here, we highlight another tension, also observed at higher stellar masses, namely that barred galaxies in TNG50 appear to be maximal discs, in the sense that the majority of the gravitational acceleration is accounted for by baryons at the peak radius of the baryonic rotation curve, while observations account for a substantial fraction of barred submaximal discs. In this letter, we compare the barred fraction of submaximal discs in the local Universe from the SPARC catalogue with that in the TNG50 simulation. We show that, although SPARC tends to select against barred galaxies, the fraction of barred submaximal discs in this dataset is significantly larger than in TNG50. This result adds to the list of challenges related to predicting the right statistics and properties of barred galaxies in $\Lambda$CDM simulations of galaxy formation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

After their birth a significant fraction of all stars pass through the tidal threshold (prah) of their cluster of origin into the classical tidal tails. The asymmetry between the number of stars in the leading and trailing tails tests gravitational theory. All five open clusters with tail data (Hyades, Praesepe, Coma Berenices, COIN-Gaia 13, NGC 752) have visibly more stars within dcl = 50 pc of their centre in their leading than their trailing tail. Using the Jerabkova-compact-convergent-point (CCP) method, the extended tails have been mapped out for four nearby 600-2000 Myr old open clusters to dcl>50 pc. These are on near-circular Galactocentric orbits, a formula for estimating the orbital eccentricity of an open cluster being derived. Applying the Phantom of Ramses code to this problem, in Newtonian gravitation the tails are near-symmetrical. In Milgromian dynamics (MOND) the asymmetry reaches the observed values for 50 < dcl/pc < 200, being maximal near peri-galacticon, and can slightly invert near apo-galacticon, and the K\"upper epicyclic overdensities are asymmetrically spaced. Clusters on circular orbits develop orbital eccentricity due to the asymmetrical spill-out, therewith spinning up opposite to their orbital angular momentum. This positive dynamical feedback suggests Milgromian open clusters to demise rapidly as their orbital eccentricity keeps increasing. The cuspy central density profiles of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes make them highly resilient to disruption by tides. Self-interactions between dark matter particles, or the cycling of baryons, may result in the formation of a constant-density core which would make haloes more susceptible to tidal disruption. We use N-body simulations to study the evolution of NFW-like "cored" subhaloes in the tidal field of a massive host, and identify the criteria and timescales for full tidal disruption. Our results imply that the survival of Milky Way satellites places constraints on the sizes of dark matter cores. Indeed, we find that no subhaloes with cores larger than 1 per cent of their initial NFW scale radius can survive for a Hubble time on orbits with pericentres <10 kpc. A satellite like Tucana 3, with pericentre ~3.5 kpc, must have a core size smaller than ~2 pc to survive just three orbital periods on its current orbit. The core sizes expected in self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) models with a velocity-independent cross section of 1 cm^2/g seem incompatible with ultra-faint satellites with small pericentric radii, such as Tuc 3, Seg 1, Seg 2, Ret 2, Tri 2, and Wil 1, as these should have fully disrupted if accreted on to the Milky Way >10 Gyr ago. These results suggest that many satellites have vanishingly small core sizes, consistent with CDM cusps. While large scale primordial non-Gaussianity is strongly constrained by present-day data, there are no such constraints at Mpc scales. Here we investigate the effect of significant small-scale primordial non-Gaussianity on structure formation and the galaxy formation process with collisionless simulations: specifically, we explore four different types of non-Gaussianities. All of these prescriptions lead to a distinct and potentially detectable feature in the matter power spectrum around the non-linear scale. The feature might have interesting consequences for the $S_8$ tension. We then show in particular that a negatively-skewed distribution of the potential random field, hence positively skewed in terms of overdensities, with $f_{\rm NL}$ of the order of 1000 at these scales, implies that typical galaxy-sized halos reach half of their present-day mass at an earlier stage and have a quieter merging history at $z<3$ than in the Gaussian case. Their environment between 0.5 and 4 virial radii at $z=0$ is less dense than in the Gaussian case. This quieter history and less dense environment has potentially interesting consequences in terms of the formation of bulges and bars. Moreover, we show that the two most massive subhalos around their host tend to display an interesting anti-correlation of velocities, indicative of kinematic coherence. We numerically explore on galaxy scales the Dipolar dark matter (DM) model based on the concept of gravitational polarization. This DM model has been proposed as a natural way to reproduce observed tight galactic scaling relations such as the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation and the Radial Acceleration Relation. We present a customized version of the \texttt{RAMSES} code including for the first time the dynamics of this Dipolar DM in $N$-body simulations. As a first application of this code, we check that we recover an equilibrium configuration that had been found analytically, where a low density Dipolar DM halo is at rest with respect to its central galaxy, recovering the aforementioned scaling relations. A characteristic signature of this equilibrium model is that it harbours a dynamical instability with a characteristic time depending on the Dipolar DM halo density, which we recover numerically. Studies of stellar populations in early-type galaxies (ETGs) show that the more massive galaxies form earlier and have a shorter star formation history (SFH). In this study, we investigate the initial conditions of ETG formation. The study begins with the collapse of non-rotating post-Big-Bang gas clouds in Milgromian (MOND) gravitation. These produce ETGs with star-forming timescales (SFT) comparable to those observed in the real Universe. Comparing these collapse models with observations, we set constraints on the initial size and density of the post-Big-Bang gas clouds in order to form ETGs. The effective-radius-mass relation of the model galaxies falls short of the observed relation. Possible mechanisms for later radius expansion are discussed. Using hydrodynamic MOND simulations this work thus for the first time shows that the SFTs observed for ETGs may be a natural occurrence in the MOND paradigm. We show that different feedback algorithms change the evolution of the galaxies only to a very minor degree in MOND. The first stars have, however, formed more rapidly in the real Universe than possible just from the here studied gravitational collapse mechanism. We report on the discovery in the Gaia DR3 astrometric and spectroscopic catalog of a new polar stream that is found as an over-density in action space. This structure is unique as it has an extremely large apocenter distance, reaching beyond 100 kpc, and yet is detected as a coherent moving structure in the Solar neighborhood with a width of $\sim 4$ kpc. A sub-sample of these stars that was fortuitously observed by LAMOST has a mean spectroscopic metallicity of $\langle {\rm [Fe/H]}\rangle = -1.60^{+0.15}_{-0.16}$ dex and possesses a resolved metallicity dispersion of $\sigma({\rm [Fe/H]}) = 0.32^{+0.17}_{-0.06}$ dex. The physical width of the stream, the metallicity dispersion and the vertical action spread indicate that the progenitor was a dwarf galaxy. The existence of such a coherent and highly radial structure at their pericenters in the vicinity of the Sun suggests that many other dwarf galaxy fragments may be lurking in the outer halo., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We present the discovery of a wide retrograde moving group in the disk plane of the Milky Way using action-angle coordinates derived from the \textit{Gaia} DR3 catalog. The structure is identified from a sample of its members that are currently almost at the pericenter of their orbit and are passing through the Solar neighborhood. The motions of the stars in this group are highly correlated, indicating that the system is probably not phase mixed. With a width of at least 1.5 kpc and with a probable intrinsic spread in metallicity, this structure is most likely the wide remnant of a tidal stream of a disrupted ancient dwarf galaxy (age $\sim 12$ Gyr, $\langle {\rm [Fe/H]} \rangle \sim -1.74$). The structure presents many similarities (e.g. in energy, angular momentum, metallicity, and eccentricity) with the Sequoia merging event. However, it possesses extremely low vertical action $J_z$ which makes it unique even amongst Sequoia dynamical groups. As the low $J_z$ may be attributable to dynamical friction, we speculate that the these stars may be the remnants of the dense core of the Sequoia progenitor., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. The stellar velocity distribution in the Solar Neighbourhood displays kinematic substructures, which are possibly signatures of the bar and spiral arms of the Milky Way and of previous accretion events. These kinematic substructures -- moving groups -- can be thought of as continuous manifolds in the 6D phase space, and the ridges in the $V_{\phi}-R$ and arches in the $V_\phi-V_R$ plane, discovered with the Gaia mission, as projections of these manifolds. We develop and apply a methodology to perform a blind search for substructure in the Gaia EDR3 6D data, and obtain a sampling of the manifolds. The method consists in the execution of the Wavelet Transform in small volumes of the Milky Way disc, and the grouping of these local solutions into global ones with a method based on the Breadth-first search algorithm from Graph Theory. We reveal the complex skeleton of the velocity distribution, sampling nine main moving groups in a large region of the disc ($6$ kpc, $60$ deg, and $2$ kpc in the radial, azimuthal, and vertical directions). In the radial direction, the groups deviate from lines of constant angular momentum that one would naively expect from first order effect of resonances. The azimuthal velocity of Acturus, Bobylev, and Hercules is non-axisymmetric. For Hercules, we measure an azimuthal gradient of $-0.50$ km/s/deg at $R=8$ kpc. We detect a vertical asymmetry in the azimuthal velocity for Coma Berenices, which is not expected in a resonance of the bar, supporting previous hypothesis of incomplete vertical phase-mixing. When we apply the same methodology to simulations of barred galaxies, we extract substructures corresponding to the Outer Linbdlad and the 1:1 Resonances and observe patterns consistent with the data. This data-driven characterization allows for a quantitative comparison with models, providing a key tool to comprehend the dynamics of the Milky Way. We investigate ways to produce the bifurcation observed in the stellar stream of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr). Our method consists in running $N$-body simulations of Sgr falling into the Milky Way for the last 3~Gyr, with added test particles on disk orbits that span a wide range of initial positions, energies, and angular momenta. We find that particles that end up in the faint branch are predominantly high angular momentum particles that can all originate from a single plane within the progenitor, nearly perpendicular both to the orbital plane of the progenitor and to the Milky Way stellar disk. Their original configuration at the start of the simulation corresponds to spiral features already present 3~Gyr ago, which could be, e.g., the result of a disk-like component being tidally perturbed, or the tidal tails of a satellite being disrupted within Sgr. We then run a simulation including the self-gravity of this disky component. Despite the remaining ambiguity of its origin, this disk component of the Sgr dwarf with spiral over-densities provides a first step towards a working model to reproduce the observed faint branch of the bifurcated Sgr stream., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. The existence of mutually correlated thin and rotating planes of satellite galaxies around both the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) calls for an explanation. Previous work in Milgromian dynamics (MOND) indicated that a past MW-M31 encounter might have led to the formation of these satellite planes. We perform the first-ever hydrodynamical MOND simulation of the Local Group using Phantom of RAMSES. We show that an MW-M31 encounter at $z \approx 1$, with a perigalactic distance of about 80 kpc, can yield two disc galaxies at $z=0$ oriented similarly to the observed galactic discs and separated similarly to the observed M31 distance. Importantly, the tidal debris are distributed in phase space similarly to the observed MW and M31 satellite planes, with the correct preferred orbital pole for both. The MW-M31 orbital geometry is consistent with the presently observed M31 proper motion despite this not being considered as a constraint when exploring the parameter space. The mass of the tidal debris around the MW and M31 at $z=0$ compare well with the mass observed in their satellite systems. The remnant discs of the two galaxies have realistic radial scale lengths and velocity dispersions, and the simulation naturally produces a much hotter stellar disc in M31 than in the MW. However, reconciling this scenario with the ages of stellar populations in satellite galaxies would require that a higher fraction of stars previously formed in the outskirts of the progenitors ended up within the tidal debris, or that the MW-M31 interaction occurred at $z>1$., Comment: 33 pages, 18 figures, 10 tables. The C-19 stream is the most metal poor stellar system ever discovered, with a mean metallicity $[Fe/H] = -3.38\pm0.06$. Its low metallicity dispersion ($\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]}$ $<$ 0.18 at the 95\% confidence level) as well as variations in sodium abundances strongly suggest a globular cluster origin. In this work, we use VLT/UVES spectra of seven C-19 stars to derive more precise velocity measurements for member stars, and to identify two new members with radial velocities and metallicities consistent with the stream's properties. One of these new member stars is located 30 $\deg$ away from the previously identified body of C-19, implying that the stream is significantly more extended than previously known and that more members likely await discovery. In the main part of C-19, we measure a radial velocity dispersion $\sigma_v$ = 6.2$^{+2.0}_{-1.4}$ km s$^{-1}$ from nine members, and a stream width of 0.56$\deg\pm0.08\deg$, equivalent to $\sim$158 pc at a heliocentric distance of 18 kpc. These confirm that C-19 is comparatively hotter, dynamically, than other known globular cluster streams and shares the properties of faint dwarf galaxy streams. On the other hand, the variations in the Na abundances of the three newly observed bright member stars, the variations in Mg and Al for two of them, and the normal Ba abundance of the one star where it can be measured provide further evidence for a globular cluster origin. The Milky Way halo was predominantly formed by the merging of numerous progenitor galaxies. However, our knowledge of this process is still incomplete, especially in regard to the total number of mergers, their global dynamical properties and their contribution to the stellar population of the Galactic halo. Here, we uncover the Milky Way mergers by detecting groupings of globular clusters, stellar streams and satellite galaxies in action ($\mathbf{J}$) space. While actions fully characterize the orbits, we additionally use the redundant information on their energy ($\textit{E}$) to enhance the contrast between groupings. For this endeavour, we use $\textit{Gaia}$ EDR3 based measurements of $170$ globular clusters, $41$ streams and $46$ satellites to derive their $\mathbf{J}$ and $\textit{E}$. To detect groups, we use the $\texttt{ENLINK}$ software, coupled with a statistical procedure that accounts for the observed phase-space uncertainties of these objects. We detect a total of $N=6$ groups, including the previously known mergers $\textit{Sagittarius}$, $\textit{Cetus}$, $\textit{Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus}$, $\textit{LMS-1/Wukong}$, $\textit{Arjuna/Sequoia/I'itoi}$ and one new merger that we call $\textit{Pontus}$. All of these mergers, together, comprise $62$ objects ($\approx 25\%$ of our sample). We discuss their members, orbital properties and metallicity distributions. We find that the three most metal-poor streams of our Galaxy -- "C-19" ([Fe/H]$=-3.4$ dex), "Sylgr" ([Fe/H]$=-2.9$ dex) and "Phoenix" ([Fe/H]$=-2.7$ dex) -- are associated with $\textit{LMS-1/Wukong}$; showing it to be the most metal-poor merger. We model the response of spherical, non-rotating Milky Way (MW) dark matter and stellar halos to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using the matrix method of linear response theory. Our computations reproduce the main features of the dark halo response from simulations. We show that these features can be well separated by a harmonic decomposition: the large scale over/underdensity in the halo (associated with its reflex motion) corresponds to the $\ell=1$ terms, and the local overdensity to the $\ell\geq2$ multipoles. Moreover, the dark halo response is largely dominated by the first order 'forcing' term, with little influence from self-gravity. This makes it difficult to constrain the underlying velocity distribution of the dark halo using the observed response of the stellar halo, but it allows us to investigate the response of stellar halo models with various velocity anisotropies: a tangential (respectively radial) halo produces a shallower (respectively stronger) response. We also show that only the local wake is responsible for these variations, the reflex motion being solely dependent on the MW potential. Therefore, we identify the structure (orientation and winding) of the in-plane quadrupolar ($m=2$) response as a potentially good probe of the stellar halo anisotropy. Finally, our method allows us to tentatively relate the wake strength and shape to resonant effects: the strong radial response could be associated with the inner Lindblad resonance, and the weak tangential one with corotation., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures. We combine the power of two stream-searching tools, STREAMFINDER and StarGO applied to the Gaia EDR3 data, to detect stellar debris belonging to the Cetus stream system that forms a complex, nearly polar structure around the Milky Way. In this work, we find the southern extensions of the northern Cetus stream as the Palca stream and a new southern stream, which overlap on the sky but have different distances. These two stream wraps extend over more than $\sim100\deg$ on the sky ($-60\deg<\delta<+40\deg$). The current N-body model of the system reproduces both wraps in the trailing arm. We also show that the Cetus system is confidently associated with the Triangulum/Pisces, Willka Yaku, and the recently discovered C-20 streams. The association with the ATLAS-Aliqa Uma stream is much weaker. All of these stellar debris are very metal-poor, comparable to the average metallicity of the southern Cetus stream with [Fe/H] = $-2.17\pm0.2$. The estimated stellar mass of the Cetus progenitor is at least $10^{5.6}\rm\,M_\odot$, compatible with Ursa Minor or Draco dwarf galaxies. The associated globular cluster with similar stellar mass, NGC 5824 very possibly was accreted in the same group infall. The multi-wrap Cetus stream is a perfect example of a dwarf galaxy that has undergone several periods of stripping, leaving behind debris at multiple locations in the halo. The full characterization of such systems is crucial to unravel the assembly history of the Milky Way and, as importantly, to provide nearby fossils to study ancient low-mass dwarf galaxies., Comment: accepted to ApJ. The lenticular galaxy NGC474 hosts a rich system of tidal shells and streams, some of which are exceptionally bright. Two teams recently presented spectroscopic observations of the brightest shells. These were the first shell spectra ever observed in integrated starlight. The authors studied the stellar populations of the shell, of the center of the galaxy and of its globular clusters. The precise formation scenario for the tidal features of this prominent galaxy however still remained unclear. Here, we add further clues on their formation from the radii of the shells, and we present a scenario for the formation of the tidal features that seems to be unique and explaining all available data. Shell radii are analyzed with the shell identification method, and we run self-consistent simulations of the formation of the tidal features. We consider Newtonian as well as MOND gravity. Observations suggest that the tidal features originate from the accretion of a spiral galaxy. The shell identification method yields that the merging galaxies collided first 1.3Gyr ago and then again 0.9Gyr ago, thereby forming the shells in two generations. This would also explain the young ages of stellar populations in the center of the galaxy and the young age of the globular clusters. The analytic models of shell propagation, that underlie the shell identification method, are verified by a simulation. The simulations reproduce well the observed morphology of the tidal features. The accreted spiral likely reached NGC474 nearly radially, in the plane of the sky, from the south, its rotation axis pointing toward us. It should have had a stellar mass of around 1/6 of NGC474, i.e. $10^{9.8}\,M_\odot$. The nearby elliptical galaxy Cen A is surrounded by a flattened system of dwarf satellite galaxies with coherent motions. Using a novel Bayesian approach, we measure the mean rotation velocity $v_{\rm rot}$ and velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\rm int}$ of the satellite system. We find $v_{\rm rot}/\sigma_{\rm int} \simeq 0.7$ indicating that the satellite system has non-negligible rotational support. Using Jeans' equations, we measure a circular velocity of 258 km s$^{-1}$ and a dynamical mass of $1.2\times 10^{13}$ M$_\odot$ within 800 kpc. In a $\Lambda$CDM cosmological context, we find that the Cen A group has a baryon fraction $M_{\rm b}/M_{200}\simeq0.035$ and is missing $\sim$77$\%$ of the cosmologically available baryons. Consequently, Cen A should have a hot intergalactic medium with a mass of $\sim$8$\times$10$^{11}$ M$_\odot$, which is more than $\sim$20 times larger than current X-ray estimates. The reflex motion and distortion of the Milky Way (MW) halo caused by the infall of a massive Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been demonstrated to result in an excess of orbital poles of dark matter halo particles towards the LMC orbital pole. This was suggested to help explain the observed preference of MW satellite galaxies to co-orbit along the Vast Polar Structure (VPOS). We test this idea by correcting the positions and velocities of the MW satellites for the Galactocentric-distance-dependent shifts inferred from a LMC-infall simulation. While this should substantially reduce the observed clustering of orbital poles if it were mainly caused by the LMC, we instead find that the strong clustering remains preserved. We confirm the initial study's main result with our simulation of an MW-LMC-like interaction, and use it to identify two reasons why this scenario is unable to explain the VPOS: (1) the orbital pole density enhancement in our simulation is very mild (~10% within 50-250 kpc) compared to the observed enhancement (~220-300%), and (2) it is very sensitive to the specific angular momenta (AM) of the simulation particles, with higher AM particles being affected the least. Particles in simulated dark matter halos tend to follow more radial orbits (lower AM), so their orbital poles are more easily affected by small offsets in position and velocity caused by an LMC infall than objects with more tangential velocity (higher AM), such as the observed dwarf galaxies surrounding the MW. It was found that satellites of nearby galaxies can form flattened co-rotating structures called disks of satellites or planes of satellites. Their existence is not expected by the current galaxy formation simulations in the standard dark-matter-based cosmology. On the contrary, modified gravity offers a promising alternative: the objects in the disks of satellites are tidal dwarf galaxies, that is small galaxies that form from tidal tails of interacting galaxies. After introducing the topic, we review here our work on simulating the formation of the disks of satellites of the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies. The initial conditions of the simulation were tuned to reproduce the observed positions, velocities and disk orientations of the galaxies. The simulation showed that the galaxies had a close flyby 6.8Gyr ago. One of the tidal tails produced by the Milky Way was captured by Andromeda. It formed a cloud of particles resembling the disk of satellites at Andromeda by its size, orientation, rotation and mass. A hint of a disk of satellites was formed at the Milky Way too. In addition, the encounter induced a warp in the disk of the simulated Milky Way that resembles the real warp by its magnitude and orientation. We present here, for the first time, the proper motions of the members of the disk of satellites of Andromeda predicted by our simulation. Finally, we point out some of the remaining open questions which this hypothesis for the formation of disks of satellites brings up., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures. We examine the spatial clustering of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars from the $\textit{u}$-band of the Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS, a component of the Ultraviolet Near-Infrared Optical Northern Survey, or UNIONS). All major groupings of stars are associated with previously known satellites, and among these is NGC 5466, a distant (16 kpc) globular cluster. NGC 5466 reportedly possesses a long stellar stream, although no individual members of the stream have previously been identified. Using both BHBs and more numerous red giant branch stars cross-matched to $\textit{Gaia}$ Data Release 2, we identify extended tidal tails from NGC 5466 that are both spatially and kinematically coherent. Interestingly, we find that this stream does not follow the same path as the previous detection at large distances from the cluster. We trace the stream across 31$^{\circ}$ of sky and show that it exhibits a very strong distance gradient ranging from 10 $<$ R$_{helio}$ $<$ 30 kpc. We compare our observations to simple dynamical models of the stream and find that they are able to broadly reproduce the overall path and kinematics. The fact that NGC 5466 is so distant, traces a wide range of Galactic distances, has an identified progenitor, and appears to have recently had an interaction with the Galaxy's disk, makes it a unique test-case for dynamical modelling of the Milky Way.

(Abridged) Dynamical friction can be used to distinguish Newtonian gravity and modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) because it works differently in these frameworks. This concept, however, has yet to be explored very much with MOND. Previous simulations showed weaker dynamical friction during major mergers for MOND than for Newtonian gravity with dark matter. Analytic arguments suggest the opposite for minor mergers. In this work, we verify the analytic predictions for MOND by high-resolution $N$-body simulations of globular clusters (GCs) moving in isolated ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). We test the MOND analog of the Chandrasekhar formula for the dynamical friction proposed by S\'anchez-Salcedo on a single GC. We also explore whether MOND allows GC systems of isolated UDGs to survive without sinking into nuclear star clusters. The simulations are run using the adaptive-mesh-refinement code Phantom of Ramses. The mass resolution is $20\,M_\odot$ and the spatial resolution $50\,$pc. The GCs are modeled as point masses. Simulations including a single GC reveal that, as long as the apocenter of the GC is over about 0.5 effective radii, the S\'anchez-Salcedo formula works excellently, with an effective Coulomb logarithm increasing with orbital circularity. Once the GC reaches the central kiloparsec, its sinking virtually stops, likely because of the core stalling mechanism. In simulations with multiple GCs, many of them sink toward the center, but the core stalling effect seems to prevent them from forming a nuclear star cluster. The GC system ends up with a lower velocity dispersion than the stars of the galaxy. Many observed disc galaxies harbour a central bar. In the standard cosmological paradigm, galactic bars should be slowed down by dynamical friction from the dark matter halo. This friction depends on the galaxy's physical properties in a complex way, making it impossible to formulate analytically. Fortunately, cosmological hydrodynamical simulations provide an excellent statistical population of galaxies, letting us quantify how simulated galactic bars evolve within dark matter haloes. We measure bar strengths, lengths, and pattern speeds in barred galaxies in state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the IllustrisTNG and EAGLE projects, using techniques similar to those used observationally. We then compare our results with the largest available observational sample at redshift $z=0$. We show that the tension between these simulations and observations in the ratio of corotation radius to bar length is $12.62\sigma$ (TNG50), $13.56\sigma$ (TNG100), $2.94\sigma$ (EAGLE50), and $9.69\sigma$ (EAGLE100), revealing for the first time that the significant tension reported previously persists in the recently released TNG50. The lower statistical tension in EAGLE50 is actually caused by it only having 5 galaxies suitable for our analysis, but all four simulations give similar statistics for the bar pattern speed distribution. In addition, the fraction of disc galaxies with bars is similar between TNG50 and TNG100, though somewhat above EAGLE100. The simulated bar fraction and its trend with stellar mass both differ greatly from observations. The dwarf galaxy NGC 3109 is receding 105 km/s faster than expected in a $\Lambda$CDM timing argument analysis of the Local Group and external galaxy groups within 8 Mpc (Banik \& Zhao 2018). If this few-body model accurately represents long-range interactions in $\Lambda$CDM, this high velocity suggests that NGC 3109 is a backsplash galaxy that was once within the virial radius of the Milky Way and was slingshot out of it. Here, we use the Illustris TNG300 cosmological hydrodynamical simulation and its merger tree to identify backsplash galaxies. We find that backsplashers as massive ($\geq 4.0 \times 10^{10} M_\odot$) and distant ($\geq 1.2$ Mpc) as NGC 3109 are extremely rare, with none having also gained energy during the interaction with their previous host. This is likely due to dynamical friction. Since we identified 13225 host galaxies similar to the Milky Way or M31, we conclude that postulating NGC 3109 is a backsplash galaxy causes $>3.96\sigma$ tension with the expected distribution of backsplashers in $\Lambda$CDM. We show that the dark matter only version of TNG300 yields much the same result, demonstrating its robustness to how the baryonic physics is modelled. If instead NGC 3109 is not a backsplasher, consistency with $\Lambda$CDM would require the 3D timing argument analysis to be off by 105 km/s for this rather isolated dwarf, which we argue is unlikely. We discuss a possible alternative scenario for NGC 3109 and the Local Group satellite planes in the context of MOND, where the Milky Way and M31 had a past close flyby $7-10$ Gyr ago., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables, 2 MB. When bars form within galaxy formation simulations in the standard cosmological context, dynamical friction with dark matter (DM) causes them to rotate rather slowly. However, almost all observed galactic bars are fast in terms of the ratio between corotation radius and bar length. Here, we explicitly display an $8\sigma$ tension between the observed distribution of this ratio and that in the EAGLE simulation at redshift 0. We also compare the evolution of Newtonian galactic discs embedded in DM haloes to their evolution in three extended gravity theories: Milgromian Dynamics (MOND), a model of non-local gravity, and a scalar-tensor-vector gravity theory (MOG). Although our models start with the same initial baryonic distribution and rotation curve, the long-term evolution is different. The bar instability happens more violently in MOND compared to the other models. There are some common features between the extended gravity models, in particular the negligible role played by dynamical friction $-$ which plays a key role in the DM model. Partly for this reason, all extended gravity models predict weaker bars and faster bar pattern speeds compared to the DM case. Although the absence of strong bars in our idealized, isolated extended gravity simulations is in tension with observations, they reproduce the strong observational preference for `fast' bar pattern speeds, which we could not do with DM. This document describes the general process of setting up, running, and analysing disc galaxy simulations using the freely available program Phantom of RAMSES (PoR). This implements Milgromian Dynamics (MOND) with a patch to the RAMSES grid-based $N$-body and hydrodynamical code that uses adaptive mesh refinement. We discuss the procedure of setting up isolated and interacting disc galaxy initial conditions for PoR, running the simulations, and analysing the results. This manual also concisely documents all previously developed MOND simulation codes and the results obtained with them., Comment: 10 pages. We present maps of the stellar streams detected in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) catalogs using the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We also report the spectroscopic follow-up of the brighter DR2 stream members obtained with the high-resolution CFHT/ESPaDOnS and VLT/UVES spectrographs as well as with the medium-resolution NTT/EFOSC2 spectrograph. Two new stellar streams that do not have a clear progenitor are detected in DR2 (named Hrid and Gunnthra), and seven are detected in EDR3 (named Gaia-6 to Gaia-12). Several candidate streams are also identified. The software also finds very long tidal tails associated with the 15 globular clusters NGC 288, NGC 1261, NGC 1851, NGC 2298, NGC 2808, NGC 3201, M 68, $\omega$Cen, NGC 5466, Palomar 5, M 5, NGC 6101, M 92, NGC 6397 and NGC 7089. These stellar streams will be used in subsequent contributions in this series to chart the properties of the Galactic acceleration field on $\sim$ 100 pc to $\sim$ 100 kpc scales., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication at ApJ. We introduce the "ACTIONFINDER", a deep learning algorithm designed to transform a sample of phase-space measurements along orbits in a static potential into action and angle coordinates. The algorithm finds the mapping from positions and velocities to actions and angles in an unsupervised way, by using the fact that points along the same orbit have identical actions. Here we present the workings of the method, and test it on simple axisymmetric models, comparing the derived actions to those generated with the Torus Mapping technique. We show that it recovers the Torus actions for halo-type orbits in a realistic model of the Milky Way to $\sim 0.6$% accuracy with as few as 1024 input phase-space measurements. These actions are much better conserved along orbits than those estimated with the St\"ackel fudge. In our case, the reciprocal mapping from actions and angles to positions and velocities can also be learned. One of the advantages of the ACTIONFINDER is that it does not require the underlying potential to be known in advance, indeed it is designed to return the acceleration field. We expect the algorithm to be useful for analysing the properties of dynamical systems in numerical simulations. However, our ultimate goal with this effort will be to apply it to real stellar streams to recover the Galactic acceleration field in a way that is relatively agnostic about the underlying dark matter properties or the behavior of gravity., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, accepted by ApJ. The dynamical stability of disk galaxies is sensitive to whether their anomalous rotation curves are caused by dark matter halos or Milgromian Dynamics (MOND). We investigate this by setting up a MOND model of M33. We first simulate it in isolation for 6 Gyr, starting from an initial good match to the rotation curve (RC). Too large a bar and bulge form when the gas is too hot, but this is avoided by reducing the gas temperature. A strong bar still forms in 1 Gyr, but rapidly weakens and becomes consistent with the observed weak bar. Previous work showed this to be challenging in Newtonian models with a live dark matter halo, which developed strong bars. The bar pattern speed implies a realistic corotation radius of 3 kpc. However, the RC still rises too steeply, and the central line of sight velocity dispersion (LOSVD) is too high. We then add a constant external acceleration field of $8.4 \times 10^{-12}$ m/s$^2$ at $30^\circ$ to the disk as a first order estimate for the gravity exerted by M31. This suppresses buildup of material at the centre, causing the RC to rise more slowly and reducing the central LOSVD. Overall, this simulation bears good resemblance to several global properties of M33, and highlights the importance of including even a weak external field on the stability and evolution of disk galaxies. Galaxy scaling laws, such as the Tully-Fisher, mass-size and Fall relations, can provide extremely useful clues on our understanding of galaxy formation in a cosmological context. Some of these relations are extremely tight and well described by one single parameter (mass), despite the theoretical existence of secondary parameters such as spin and concentration, which are believed to impact these relations. In fact, the residuals of these scaling laws appear to be almost uncorrelated with each other, posing significant constraints on models where secondary parameters play an important role. Here, we show that a possible solution is that such secondary parameters are correlated amongst themselves, in a way that removes correlations in observable space. In particular, we focus on how the existence of an anti-correlation between the dark matter halo spin and its concentration -- which is still debated in simulations -- can weaken the correlation of the residuals of the Tully-Fisher and mass-size relations. Interestingly, using simple analytic galaxy formation models, we find that this happens only for a relatively small portion of the parameter space that we explored, which suggests that this idea could be used to derive constraints to galaxy formation models that are still unexplored., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present an analysis of the structure, kinematics and orbit of a newly found stellar stream emanating from the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341). This stream was discovered in an improved matched-filter map of the outer Galaxy, based on a "color-color-magnitude" diagram, created using photometry from the Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS) and the Pan-STARRS 1 3$\pi$ survey (PS1). We find the stream to have a length of 17{\deg} (2.5 kpc at the distance of M92), a width dispersion of $0.29${\deg}(42 pc) and a stellar mass of $[3.17 \pm{0.89}] \times 10^{4} $ M$_\odot$ ($10 \%$ of the stellar mass of the current main body of M92). We examine the kinematics of main sequence, red giant and blue horizontal branch stars belonging to the stream and that have proper motion measurements from the second data release of Gaia. N-body simulations suggest that the stream was likely formed very recently (during the last $\sim 500$ Myr) forcing us to question the orbital origin of this ancient, metal-poor globular cluster., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. We analyse the kinematics and dynamics of a homogeneous sample of red clump stars selected from the second Gaia data release catalogue in the direction of the Galactic poles. The level of completeness of the sample at heights between 0.6 and 3.5 kpc is asserted by comparison with the 2 Micron All Sky Survey catalogue. We show that both the density distribution and velocity dispersion are significantly more perturbed in the North than in the South, in all analysed regions of our Galactic neighbourhoods. We provide a detailed assessment of these North-South asymmetries at large heights. We then proceed to evaluate how such asymmetries could affect determinations of the dynamical matter density under equilibrium assumptions. We find that a Jeans analysis delivers relatively similar vertical forces and integrated dynamical surface densities at large heights above the plane in both hemispheres. At these heights, the densities of stars and gas are very low and the surface density is largely dominated by dark matter, which allows to estimate, separately in the North and South, the local dark matter density derived under equilibrium assumptions. In the presence of vertical perturbations, such values should be considered as an upper limit. This Jeans analysis yields values of the local dark matter density above 2~kpc, $\rho_{\rm DM} \sim 0.013 \, {\rm M}_\odot/{\rm pc}^3$ ($ \sim 0.509 \, {\rm GeV/cm}^3$) in the perturbed Northern hemisphere, and $\rho_{\rm DM} \sim 0.010 \, {\rm M}_\odot/{\rm pc}^3$ ($ \sim 0.374 \, {\rm GeV/cm}^3$) in the much less perturbed South. As a comparison, we determine the local dark matter density by fitting a global phase-space distribution to the data. We end up with a value in the range of $\rho_{\rm DM} \sim 0.011 - 0.014 \, {\rm M}_\odot/{\rm pc}^3$ in global agreement with Jeans analysis., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted in A&A

We use the second Gaia data release in combination with the catalog of Sanders & Das (2018) to dissect the Milky Way disc in phase-space and relative ages. We confirm and report the existence of multiple velocity moving groups at low azimuthal velocities and angular momenta, below Arcturus, regularly separated by $\sim~18-20\,\rm{km s^{-1}}$ in azimuthal velocity. Such features were predicted to exist more than ten years ago from the reaction of the Milky Way to a perturbation in the disc undergoing phase-mixing. These structures appear slightly younger than their phase-space surroundings, arguing against an extra-galactic origin. We also identify in relative age many of the classical ridges in the plane of azimuthal velocity vs. Galactocentric radius, traditionally associated with resonance features. These ridges are also younger than their phase-space surroundings in accordance with predictions from recent state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies. We study the response of dynamically young and old stellar disc populations to resonances from an analytic model of a large bar, which, remarkably, qualitatively reproduces the trends seen in the data. Our results re-inforce the idea that the Galactic disc is currently being shaped by both internal and external perturbations, and that, while absolute isochrone ages have to be taken with great care, exploring the dynamical structure of the disc in stellar ages, especially with future asteroseismic data, will provide much stronger constraints than metallicity/abundance trends alone., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, comments welcome, submitted to A&A

Double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) are one of the main sources of stellar masses, as additional observations are only needed to give the inclinations of the orbital planes in order to obtain the individual masses of the components. For this reason, we are observing a selection of SB2s using the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Haute-Provence observatory in order to precisely determine their orbital elements. Our objective is to finally obtain masses with an accuracy of the order of one percent by combining our radial velocity (RV) measurements and the astrometric measurements that will come from the Gaia satellite. We present here the RVs and the re-determined orbits of 10 SB2s. In order to verify the masses we will derive from Gaia, we obtained interferometric measurements of the ESO VLTI for one of these SB2s. Adding the interferometric or speckle measurements already published by us or by others for 4 other stars, we finally obtain the masses of the components of 5 binary stars, with masses ranging from 0.51 to 2.2 solar masses, including main-sequence dwarfs and some more evolved stars whose location in the HR diagram has been estimated., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures and 10 others attached files; to be published in MNRAS

We present the first full six-dimensional panoramic portrait of the Sagittarius stream, obtained by searching for wide stellar streams in the Gaia DR2 dataset with the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We use the kinematic behavior of the sample to devise a selection of Gaia RR Lyrae, providing excellent distance measurements along the stream. The proper motion data are complemented with radial velocities from public surveys. We find that the global morphological and kinematic properties of the Sagittarius stream are still reasonably well reproduced by the simple Law & Majewski (2010) model (LM10), although the model overestimates the leading arm and trailing arm distances by up to $\sim 15$%. The sample newly reveals the leading arm of the Sagittarius stream as it passes into very crowded regions of the Galactic disk towards the Galactic Anticenter direction. Fortuitously, this part of the stream is almost exactly at the diametrically opposite location from the Galactic Center to the progenitor, which should allow an assessment of the influence of dynamical friction and self-gravity in a way that is nearly independent of the underlying Galactic potential model., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters
