Abstract

Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts.

Abstract

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss 1. Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity 2. Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity.

Abstract

Studies of the efficiency vs. the cost of long-term biological monitoring strategies are particularly infrequent and needed in large rivers. We used recent studies concerning the long-term monitoring of fish and macroinvertebrates in the Rhône River to discuss the potential and limits of monitoring strategies in large rivers and other environments. A first study is a numerical analysis of the probability to detect changes in fish abundance after flow restoration in the river. A second study concerns the detection of "most expected" relationships in annual fish time series, such as fish cohort follow-ups. It involves a comparison of the Rhône results with those obtained in smaller rivers (where sampling is easier) or in the ocean (where sampling is even more difficult). Results indicate that the long-term biological strategies used in the Rhône River are efficient for detecting major inter-annual trends, but are limited for detecting annual events. Such studies apply to other systems than large rivers and we hope that they will contribute to an increased efficiency and a reduced cost of monitoring strategies., Les études comparant l'efficacité vs. le coût des suivis biologiques de long-terme sont peu fréquentes et particulièrement utiles en grandes rivières. Nous nous basons sur des analyses récentes des données collectées dans le cadre des suivis de poissons et de macroinvertébrés du fleuve Rhône pour discuter du potentiel et des limites des stratégies d'échantillonnage mise en place en grands fleuves et dans d'autres milieux. Une première étude concerne une analyse numérique de la probabilité de détecter des changements d'abondance (poissons, invertébrés) après des mesures de restauration des débits à l'aval des barrages. Une seconde étude concerne la détection des patterns les plus attendus dans les séries annuelles d'abondance de poissons, comme les suivis de cohortes. Cette étude compare les résultats du Rhône avec ceux obtenus sur de petits cours d'eau (où l'échantillonnage est meilleur) et en mer (plus difficile). Les résultats montrent que les échantillonnages en cours permettent de détecter les tendances interannuelles majeures, mais sont limités pour discuter des évènements à l'échelle annuelle. Ces études s'appliquent à d'autres systèmes que les grandes rivières et peuvent conduire à la mise en place de stratégies de suivi plus efficaces et moins coûteuses

A second study concerns the detection of "most expected" relationships in annual fish time series, such as fish cohort follow-ups. It involves a comparison of the Rhône results with those obtained in smaller rivers (where sampling is easier) or in the ocean (where sampling is even more difficult). Results indicate that the long-term biological strategies used in the Rhône River are efficient for detecting major inter-annual trends, but are limited for detecting annual events. Such studies apply to other systems than large rivers and we hope that they will contribute to an increased efficiency and a reduced cost of monitoring strategies., Les études comparant l'efficacité vs. le coût des suivis biologiques de long-terme sont peu fréquentes et particulièrement utiles en grandes rivières. Nous nous basons sur des analyses récentes des données collectées dans le cadre des suivis de poissons et de macroinvertébrés du fleuve Rhône pour discuter du potentiel et des limites des stratégies d'échantillonnage mise en place en grands fleuves et dans d'autres milieux. Une première étude concerne une analyse numérique de la probabilité de détecter des changements d'abondance (poissons, invertébrés) après des mesures de restauration des débits à l'aval des barrages. Une seconde étude concerne la détection des patterns les plus attendus dans les séries annuelles d'abondance de poissons, comme les suivis de cohortes. Cette étude compare les résultats du Rhône avec ceux obtenus sur de petits cours d'eau (où l'échantillonnage est meilleur) et en mer (plus difficile). Les résultats montrent que les échantillonnages en cours permettent de détecter les tendances interannuelles majeures, mais sont limités pour discuter des évènements à l'échelle annuelle. Ces études s'appliquent à d'autres systèmes que les grandes rivières et peuvent conduire à la mise en place de stratégies de suivi plus efficaces et moins coûteuses

Abstract

International audience; The first internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1) of ribosomal RNA of 5 individuals of unknown pisidiid clams collected over several years in the Rhone river basin was extracted to specify their taxonomic position. The phylogenetic tree obtained from the comparison of these sequences to those of 19 species available in the NCBI genetic database is in good agreement with the phylogenetic structure of Sphaeriinae and revealed that the unknown bivalves belong to the North American species Euglesa compressa. This invasive mollusk has now colonized the major French river basins and could be responsible for the major decline of E. supina in the areas where it has settled. The main features of E. compressa are also presented.

Abstract

Spasticity is a common disabling symptom of several neurological conditions including stroke. Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injection represents the gold standard therapy for focal spasticity. Post-stroke management of patients receiving BTX-A therapy has been variously investigated, but general agreement on how and when to implement rehabilitation is lacking.To perform a national survey of experts on the most appropriate rehabilitation procedures after BTX-A therapy for the focal treatment of spasticity.The study employed the Delphi technique through the COSMO project (Consensus on Post-Injection Management in Post-stroke Spasticity).Italian neurologists and physiatrists with experience in BTX-A therapy were selected to participate in the survey. Their anonymous opinions on key issues in treatment strategies in post-stroke spasticity were collected in three sequential rounds facilitated by a web platform. Consensus on a given issue was defined as agreed opinion by at least 66% of the survey participants.In all, 44 Italian experts were involved. Positive consensus was reached on the need to start rehabilitation during the first week after BTX-A injection therapy, with a rehabilitation program comprising both stretching combined with electrical stimulation and exercise therapy. Functional surgery may be considered only after 12-24 months in cases of BTX-A therapy failure. The use of commercial or custom-made orthoses in selected cases was recommended. The appropriate time interval between two BTX-A injections is 3-6 months, and clinical assessment should be performed 1 month after injection.The results of this national survey confirm that clinical experts on the use of BTX-A therapy for spasticity after stroke agree on the need to initiate rehabilitation treatment immediately after BTX-A injection: muscle stretching exercises, eventually combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation, may enhance the effect of BTX-A therapy. Outcome after BTX-A therapy should be assessed at repeated follow-up visits.This expert panel survey can provide guidance for clinicians in the assessment of patients treated with BTX-A therapy.

Background: In August 2020, Sputnik V was registered as Gam-COVID-Vac by the Russian Ministry of Health, and since December 2020 it has been distributed in 61 countries worldwide. On 25 February 2021, the Republic of San Marino started its vaccination campaign, which includes Sputnik V. Our aim was to describe the adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) with this vaccine through participant-based active surveillance in the country. Methods: Beginning from 4 March to 8 April 2021, a nationwide study was conducted on San Marino's population aged 18–89 years who received one or two doses of Sputnik V. E-questionnaire dissemination occurred through e-mails, QR-codes or live/phone interviews ~7 days after the first and second vaccine dose. A descriptive analysis was conducted to quantify AEFI incidence on both occasions, stratifying results by type and severity of symptoms. Findings: Mean age of the 2558 vaccine recipients was 66±14 years. First-dose AEFI incidence was 53.3% (systemic reactions at 42.2%), while second-dose AEFI incidence was 66.8% (systemic reactions at 50.4%) (n = 1288). In general, 76.0% of two-dose recipients reported some AEFIs after either vaccine dose, and 2.1% suffered severe reactions; in 60- to 89-year-olds (n = 1021), AEFI incidence was 70.0%, with 53.0% of subjects describing systemic reactions and 0.8% reporting severe symptoms. The most frequent symptoms were local pain, asthenia, headache and joint pain. Interpretation: Our results, albeit preliminary, suggest that Sputnik V has a high tolerability profile in the population aged ≥60 years in terms of short-term AEFIs. Funding: None.

Abstract

Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts., (© 2024. Abstract

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss 1 . Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity 2 . Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity., (© 2023. Abstract

Background: Gam-COVID-Vac is the world's first registered vector vaccine against COVID-19 based on a combination of two heterologous adenoviruses. It was chosen by the Republic of San Marino as the main tool in its vaccination campaign, which started on 25 February 2021. Our aim was to build up on the ROCCA study, focused on the older population, by describing adverse effects following immunisation (AEFIs) rates and characteristics in all age groups for the first time in a real-world context., Methods: An active surveillance study on recipients of at least one dose of the Gam-COVID-Vac vaccine was conducted. Participants were administered online questionnaires through live/phone interviews with physicians, by e-mail or by scanning a QR code at different points in time after the first dose: one week (Q1) one month (Q2), and three months (Q3) between March and August 2021., Findings: Overall, 6190 vaccine recipients were recruited. Mean age was 52·4 ± 18·2 years. After the first dose, systemic reactions were reported by 57·5% of the participants, while injection site reactions were reported by 46·7%. The most common AEFIs were pain at the injection site, fatigue and headache. Grade 3 or 4 AEFIs were reported by 0·8% and 0·3% of the participants, respectively. After the second dose, systemic reactions were reported by 63·1% of the participants, while injection site reactions by 54·7%. The most common AEFIs were malaise, pain at injection site and myalgia. Grade 3 or 4 AEFIs were reported by 2·7% and 1·1% of the participants, respectively. Abstract

Dispersal is an essential process in population and community dynamics, but is difficult to measure in the field. In freshwater ecosystems, information on biological traits related to organisms' morphology, life history and behaviour provides useful dispersal proxies, but information remains scattered or unpublished for many taxa. We compiled information on multiple dispersal-related biological traits of European aquatic macroinvertebrates in a unique resource, the DISPERSE database. DISPERSE includes nine dispersal-related traits subdivided into 39 trait categories for 480 taxa, including Annelida, Mollusca, Platyhelminthes, and Arthropoda such as Crustacea and Insecta, generally at the genus level. Information within DISPERSE can be used to address fundamental research questions in metapopulation ecology, metacommunity ecology, macroecology and evolutionary ecology. Information on dispersal proxies can be applied to improve predictions of ecological responses to global change, and to inform improvements to biomonitoring, conservation and management strategies. The diverse sources used in DISPERSE complement existing trait databases by providing new information on dispersal traits, most of which would not otherwise be accessible to the scientific community.
