Abstract

RICE is designed to detect ultrahigh energy (>100 TeV) neutrinos from astrophysical sources. It will consist of an array of compact radio (100 to 1000 MHz) receivers buried in ice at the South Pole. During the 1995-96 and 1996-97 austral summers, several receivers transmitters were deployed in bore holes drilled for the AMANDA project, at depths of 141 to 260 m. Abstract

We employ a simple multiple scattering model to investigate the inclusive reaction p + A --> p + X for projectile momenta in the 100-200 GeV/c range. We find that data are consistent with a class of interaction models in which the stopping power of nuclei is rather low. We discuss extrapolation to ultra-high energy and the application to interpretation of cosmic-ray air showers at energies up to 10^20 eV., Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, revtex.sty, psfig.sty

3. Hamiltonian SU(N) Lattice Gauge Theories With Exact Vacuum States In 2+1 Dimensions

Abstract

We investigate (2+1)-d Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory using a class of Hamiltonians having exactly known vacuum states. These theories are shown to have a wide range of possible classical continuum limits which differ from that of the standard Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian. This conclusion is at variance with some previously published results. We examine the quantum continuum behavior of these theories by both analytic and numerical methods including plaquette space integration and standard Monte Carlo techniques. String tension and variational estimates for the $J^{\rm PC}=0^{++}$ glueball spectra are presented for SU(3). We find that in spite of the wide range of classical behavior predicted, these theories correspond to only two distinct quantum systems in the weak coupling limit. One of these quantum limits gives string tensions and glueball states which show scaling in weak coupling which agrees with the perturbative prediction for the (2+1)-d problem., Comment: KITCS93-12-2, 28 pages (REVTeX) plus 11 postscript figures all uuencoded. Abstract

The first stage of the AMANDA High Energy Neutrino Detector at the South Pole, the 302 PMT array AMANDA-B10, is taking data since 1997. We describe results on atmospheric neutrinos, limits on indirect WIMP detection, seasonal muon flux variation, relativistic monopole flux limits, a search for gravitational collapse neutrinos, and a depth scan of the optical ice properties. Abstract

We review the status of the AMANDA neutrino telescope. We present resultsobtained from the four-string prototype array AMANDA-B4 and describe themethods of track reconstruction and neutrino event separation. We give also firstresults of the analysis of the 10-string detector AMANDA-B10, in particular onatmospheric neutrinos and the search for magnetic monopoles. We sketch thefuture schedule on the way to a cube kilometer telescope at the South Pole,ICECUBE.

Abstract

Capon's maximum likelihood method (MLM) is being used increasingly for improved localization and high resolution of sources in matched-field processing (MFP) in a waveguide environment. When the noise component is dominated by modal noise (this is, noise due to excitation of the modal structure of the waveguide by distant sources of acoustic energy, e.g., wave action, distant shipping), the MLM can become unstable; when the number of modes (M) supported by the waveguide is considerably less than the number of sensors (N), a 'reduced' MLM is available to stabilize the processing Byrne et. al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 87, 2493-2502 (1990). In this paper the sector-focused stability (SFS) methods of Byrne and Steele (Proc. IEEE., ICASSP 1987) are employed to treat the case of M nearly equal to N. Simulations, using a shallow- water range-independent environment, are presented to illustrate the increase in stability of SFS over MLM in the presence of phase errors on the sensors or more general mismatch.
