Abstract

The fragmentation of quasi-projectiles from the nuclear reaction 40Ca+12C at 25 MeV per nucleon bombarding energy was used to produce α-emission sources. From a careful selection of these sources provided by a complete detection and from comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, evidence in favor of α-particle clustering from excited 16O, 20Ne and 24Mg is reported. Abstract

Background: Abdominoplasty is a common surgical procedure in which excess abdominal skin and fat are reduced to improve body contouring. Fibrin sealant has been proposed to reduce postsurgical bleeding and exudation. In this study, we evaluated whether there was a significant statistical difference in surgical output between the use of fibrin glue and its nonuse in abdominoplasty surgery, specifically in reducing bleeding and exudation. Material and methods: A retrospective chart review of 68 postbariatric abdominoplasty patients (58 females, 10 males) was performed. We divided the patients into Group A (30 cases, 44%), in which we used fibrin sealant, and Group B (38 cases, 56%), in which we did not use fibrin glue. We calculated the total amount of liquid in suction drainages until the day of their removal. Statistical analysis included the independent t-test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The average drainage output in Group A was 620.0 ± 375.0 mL, whereas in Group B, it was 500.0 ± 290.0 mL. Results indicate an insignificant correlation between the use of fibrin glue and the amount of liquid in the surgical drains (t = 1.52, p = 0.13). The result is not significant at p

Abstract

We present a new experimental method to correlate the isotopic composition of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted at midrapidity in semiperipheral collisions with the emission timescale: IMFs emitted in the early stage of the reaction show larger values of (N/Z) isospin asymmetry, stronger angular anisotropies, and reduced odd-even staggering effects in neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) distributions than those produced in sequential statistical emission. All these effects support the concept of isospin “migration”, that is sensitive to the density gradient between participant and quasispectator nuclear matter, in the so called neck fragmentation mechanism. By comparing the data to a stochastic mean field (SMF) simulation we show that this method gives valuable constraints on the symmetry energy term of nuclear equation of state at subsaturation densities. An indication emerges for a linear density dependence of the symmetry energy.

Abstract

The characteristics of the dissipative processes in the collisions of light heavy ion systems at incident energies below 10 MeV/nucleon have been studied. The correlations between different experimental observables show similar trends as those known at much heavier systems and semiempirical relationships are established starting from assumptions on the nature of the microscopic mechanisms. The charge equilibration process in light systems is also studied.

Abstract

International audience; A quantitative comparison regarding absolute cross sections associated to Statistical and Dynamical Fission processes in the 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni collisions experimentally investigated at 35 AMeV beam energy using multi-detector CHIMERA is presented. It results that Dynamical Fission process is about two times more probable in the neutron rich 124Sn+64Ni system than in the 112Sn+58Ni neutron poor one. The observed difference could indicate an influence of the entrance channel Isospin (N/Z) content on the reaction mechanisms.

Abstract

Two-neutron, two-proton and neutron–proton correlation functions have been measured simultaneously for the E/A=45 MeV 58 Ni + 27 Al reaction. Calculations from a statistical model have been compared to singles energy spectra as well as to total and gated correlation functions. This imposes very strong constraints on the model parameters. The use of directionally gated correlation functions helps to disentangle space and time information. Values of Gaussian radii, emission lifetimes, initial temperatures, source velocities and flow velocities are extracted. Correlation functions gated on total momentum of the nucleon pairs suggest that more energetic particles are emitted on a fast time scale ( < 100 fm / c ) and that the fraction of pre-equilibrium to equilibrium emission is larger for protons than for neutrons.

Abstract

The strength of the neutron-neutron correlation function from the E=45AMeV 58Ni+27Al, natNi, and 197Au reactions depends on the neutron parallel velocity. This indicates the presence of multiple sources of neutron emission. We find these sources consistent with a dissipative, binary reaction mechanism as it is described by, e.g., Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck calculations. (APS)

Abstract

Dynamic liquefaction of saturate loose sand deposit is a common geotechnical failure effect caused by an earthquake, which can lead to structural damage of buildings, lifelines and industrial components in general. Several damage cases have been observed in past events and have been documented in the technical literature and post-earthquake reconnaissance reports. Failure and malfunctioning of pipelines, tanks and wastewater treatment plants, induced by differential vertical settlements, horizontal lateral spread and uplift of underground structures, are described. All these permanent displacements could be directly related to co-seismic liquefaction of the foundation soil. Moreover, this failure mechanism is strongly site dependent and the abovementioned effects frequently occurred in coastal and fluvial plane areas, where industrial plants are often situated. The paper studies and compares the behaviour of some important industrial components during the liquefaction event. Empirical fragilities and threshold values were evaluated on the basis of the significant seismic parameter, accounting for the possible hazardous effects of the release of toxic and flammable fluids. These tools could be assessed by means of a comparison with similar ones proposed by current building codes and implemented in existing software for the risk assessment of industrial plants and lifeline networks.

Abstract

Pipelines are basilar structures for the development of civil and industrial activities. Their seismic behaviour could be analyzed by applying a multi-disciplinary approach. In particular, for underground pipelines, soil/structure interaction is considered determinant during the seismic event. Moreover, for specific site conditions, ground failure phenomena induced by earthquakes might occur. Since such phenomena are generally associated to permanent soil displacement, the related deformations could be not tolerated by the pipelines, causing structural breaks and/or the losses of fluid containment. On the basis of a large collection of damage occurred to pipelines during recent earthquakes, a class of fragility curves was built up for underground structures underground failure. These curves were given as the probability of the occurrence of certain damage in a pipeline segment as a function of a seismic parameter. Therefore, compared to the existing formulations based on the estimation of a repair rate, RR, this study gives fragility curves which are directly useable on HAZUS-like platform, similarly to punctual structures, as above ground tanks. These empirical formulations could be easily treated in order to obtain tools for the estimation of seismic vulnerability, implemented in numerical codes for QRA (Quantitative Risk Analyses) of industrial plants. For this purpose, in this paper, the probit parameters and the threshold values are also given.

Abstract

Wastewater treatment systems are complex networks composed by several interconnected elements, each of them characterized by specific seismic vulnerability. In the aftermath of an earthquake it is essential that such systems are fully or at least partially operating for the correct operation. Furthermore, the system failure can result in the deterioration of the environment by leakage of untreated wastewater on soil and/or its discharge into superficial water bodies. This paper deals with the assessment of seismic vulnerability of wastewater treatment plants by analyzing the effects of past earthquakes and taking into account the following factors: (i) plant size (small, medium and large); (ii) typology of wastewaters treated (municipal and industrial); (iii) treatment level performed (primary, secondary and tertiary); (iv) main causes of damages (soil/structure dynamic interaction and inertial overload); (v) elements damaged (structural, e.g. tank walls and bottom, and non-structural, e.g sludge scrapers, baffles, aerators, mechanical mixers). Historical seismic data for each combination of the previously listed factors will be given when available, in order to highlight common features and differences. The final aim of this work is to provide fragility curves and threshold values with respect to the main seismic intensity parameters and considering either the loss of control or the leak of wastewater in the ground from containment system. Once validated such curves could be successfully and easily used implemented into existing or new Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) tools or for land-use planning methodologies.

Abstract

Industrial plants are complex systems that need stringent requirements to ensure structural safety. If large amount of toxic or flammable materials are handled, the consequences of failures can affect wide surrounding areas. The prediction and prevention of possible accidental scenarios triggered by the interaction of natural disaster with industrial equipment depend upon the reliability of available tools for structural design and hazard assessment. In this paper, attention is focused on industrial pipelines and on damages suffered by these structures under seismic sequences. Available data have been classified on the basis of seismological, geotechnical, structural and performance parameters, in order to assess the main factors affecting the seismic vulnerability of pipelines. An observational correlation between pipeline performance and relevant earthquake intensity measures for both transient and permanent deformations is derived. Moreover, compared to the available literature performance parameters based on a repair ratio, new fragility formulations have been built on the basis of the failure probability of pipelines. This circumstance provided some interesting remarks on the loss of containment, which has been largely demonstrated as the main issue for qualitative and quantitative risk assessment depending on relevant failure mechanisms.

Abstract

In past experiments, mass asymmetric projectile-target combinations 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni were investigated at ELab(112,124Sn)=35 A.MeV beam energy by using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA. From a quantitative comparison of cross sections associated to Statistical and Dynamical Fission of the Projectile-Like Fragments, it resulted that Dynamical Fission process is about two times more probable in the neutron rich 124Sn+64Ni system than in the 112Sn +58 Ni neutron poor one. In contrast, no sizable difference was found for Statistical Fission mechanism. The observed difference in the strength of the Dynamical effects could arise from the difference in entrance channel Isospin (N/Z) content. In order to disentangle Isospin effects from effects due to the different masses of the two systems, a new experiment 124Xe+64Zn at 35 A.MeV beam energy has been recently carried out.

Abstract

In order to obtain information on the time sequence and time scale of the production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) in nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies it is proposed to analyze correlations between relative velocities of IMF's with respect to projectile-like fragments (PLF) and target-like fragments (TLF). Experimental data on the production of IMF's in the 124Sn+64Ni reaction, taken with the CHIMERA multidetector array at 35 MeV/nucleon, have been analyzed with the proposed method.
