While the Brazilian National Forest Inventory (NFI) is in progress, there is a growing demand to understand the effect of cluster size on the accuracy and precision of forest-attribute estimation. We aimed to find the minimum cluster size (in area) to estimate merchantable volume (MV) with the same accuracy and precision as the estimates derived from the original cluster of 8,000 m2. We used data from an inventory carried out in a forest unit (Bom Futuro National Forest) in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon, where 22 clusters were distributed as a two-stage sampling design. Three products were evaluated: (i) MV of trees with a diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 20 cm (P1); (ii) MV of trees with DBH ≥ 50 cm (P2); and (iii) MV of commercial species with DBH ≥ 50 cm and stem quality ‘level 1’ or ‘level 2’ (P3). We assessed ten scenarios in which the cluster size was reduced from 8,000 m2 to 800 m2. The accuracy of P1, P2 and P3 was highly significantly lower for reductions < 2,400 m². The precision was more sensitive to variations in cluster size, especially for P2 and P3. Minimum cluster sizes were ≥ 2,400 m² to estimate P1, ≥ 4,800 m² to estimate P2, and ≥ 7,200 m² to estimate P3. We concluded that it is possible to reduce the cluster size without losing the accuracy and precision given by the original NFI cluster. A cluster of 2,400 m² provides estimates as accurate as the original cluster, regardless of the evaluated product. RESUMO Enquanto o Inventário Florestal Nacional Brasileiro (IFN) está em andamento, há uma demanda crescente para entender o efeito da área do conglomerado sobre a exatidão e precisão da estimativa de atributos florestais. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a área mínima de um conglomerado para estimar o volume comercial (VC) com a mesma acurácia e precisão que as estimativas derivadas do conglomerado original de 8.000 m². A base de dados é proveniente de um inventário realizado em uma unidade florestal (Floresta Nacional do Bom Futuro) no sudoeste da Amazônia brasileira, onde 22 conglomerados foram distribuídos em um desenho amostral em dois estágios. Foram avaliados três produtos: (i) VC de árvores com diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) ≥ 20 cm (P1); (ii) VC de árvores com DAP ≥ 50 cm (P2); e (iii) VC de espécies comerciais com DAP ≥ 50 cm e qualidade de fuste ‘nível 1’ ou ‘nível 2’ (P3). O estudo avaliou dez cenários em que a área do conglomerado foi reduzida de 8.000 a 800 m². A acurácia de P1, P2 e P3 foi significativamente menor para reduções < 2.400 m². A precisão foi mais sensível à variação no tamanho do conglomerado, sobretudo para P2 e P3. Os tamanhos mínimos de conglomerado foram ≥ 2.400 m² para estimar P1, ≥ 4.800 m² para estimar P2 e ≥ 7.200 m² para estimar P3. Concluímos que é possível reduzir a área do conglomerado sem perder acurácia e precisão do conglomerado original do IFN. Um conglomerado de 2.400 m² fornece estimativas com a mesma acurácia que o conglomerado original, independentemente do produto avaliado.

On November 5, 2015, the Fundao dam collapsed and released > 60 million m3 of iron-rich mining sediments into the Doce river basin, covering >1000 ha of floodplain soils across ~80 km from the rupture. The characterization of alluvial mud covering and/or mixed with native soil is a priority for successful environmental rehabilitation. Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry was used to (1) assess the elemental composition of native soils and alluvial mud across impacted riparian areas; and 2) predict fertility properties of the mud and soils that are crucial for environmental rehabilitation and vegetation establishment (e.g., pH, available macro and micronutrients, cation exchange capacity, organic matter). Native soils and alluvial mud were sampled across impacted areas and analyzed via pXRF and conventional laboratory methods. Random forest (RF) regression was used to predict fertility properties using pXRF data for pooled soil and alluvial mud samples. Mud and native surrounding soils were clearly differentiated based on chemical properties determined via pXRF (mainly SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, and MnO). The pXRF data and RF models successfully predicted pH for pooled samples (R2 = 0.80). Moderate predictions were obtained for soil organic matter (R2 = 0.53) and cation exchange capacity (R2 = 0.54). Considering the extent of impacted area and efforts required for successful environmental rehabilitation, the pXRF spectrometer showed great potential for screening impacted areas. It can assess total elemental composition, differentiate alluvial mud from native soils, and reasonably predict related fertility properties in pooled heterogeneous substrates (native soil + mud + river sediments).

International audience; Almost half of the total organic carbon (C) in terrestrial ecosystems is stored in forest soils. By altering rates of input or release of C from soils, forest management activities can influence soil C stocks in forests. In this review, we synthesize current evidence regarding the influences of 13 common forest management practices on forest soil C stocks. Afforestation of former croplands generally increases soil C stocks, whereas on former grasslands and peatlands, soil C stocks are unchanged or even reduced following afforestation. The conversion of primary forests to secondary forests generally reduces soil C stocks, particularly if the land is converted to an agricultural land-use prior to reforestation. Harvesting, particularly clear-cut harvesting, generally results in a reduction in soil C stocks, particularly in the forest floor and upper mineral soil. Removal of residues by harvesting whole-trees and stumps negatively affects soil C stocks. Soil disturbance from site preparation decreases soil C stocks, particularly in the organic top soil, however improved growth of tree seedlings may outweigh soil C losses over a rotation. Nitrogen (N) addition has an overall positive effect on soil C stocks across a wide range of forest ecosystems. Likewise, higher stocks and faster accumulation of soil C occur under tree species with N-fixing associates. Stocks and accumulation rates of soil C also differ under different tree species, with coniferous species accumulating more C in the forest floor and broadleaved species tending to store more C in the mineral soil. There is some evidence that increased tree species diversity could positively affect soil C stocks in temperate and subtropical forests, but tree species identity, particularly N-fixing species, seems to have a stronger impact on soil C stocks than tree species diversity. Management of stand density and thinning have small effects on forest soil C stocks. In forests with high populations of ungulate herbivores, reduction in herbivory levels can increase soil C stocks. Removal of plant biomass for fodder and fuel is related to a reduction in the soil C stocks. Fire management practices such as prescribed burning reduce soil C stocks, but less so than wildfires which are more intense. For each practice, we identify existing gaps in knowledge and suggest research to address the gaps.

Concerns about the negative effects of agriculture on soil physical quality and soil organic carbon (SOC) pools have spurred on the adoption of conservation tillage systems in tropical regions. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term impacts (16th year) of conventional (CT), minimum (MT) and no-tillage (NT) practices and different cover crops (sunn hemp and a bean/millet sequence) on soil physical properties and SOC content of a corn cultivated Ultisol in the northeast of Brazil. Soil bulk density (Bd), soil penetration resistance (SPR), soil aggregation, and total aggregate-associated carbon (C) (4-2 mm) were evaluated. Tillage practices exerted strong control on soil physical properties and total aggregate-C content but were influenced by cover crop species. Minimum tillage presented the lowest Bd, irrespective of cover crop, while NT with bean/millet sequence resulted in the lowest SPR. However, as regards soil aggregation and total aggregate-C, the results indicated that there were no differences between MT and NT, with both systems presenting greater mean weight diameter (MWD) and total aggregate-C content than CT. Total aggregate-C content in the 0.00-0.05 m soil layer in conservation tillage was increased by the adoption of a bean/millet sequence. Increased mechanical disturbance through CT practices was harmful to Bd, soil aggregation and SOC accrual. Overall, more conservative tillage practices and the proper choice of cover crops might yield greater soil quality. Low intensity of soil disturbances due to the adoption of MT favors soil aggregation and the accrual of SOC in weakly structured soils through increases in contact between organic and mineral particles while not causing significant destruction of soil aggregates.

Forest production is strongly dependent on nutrient uptake; however, sustainable management of intensively managed plantations requires an improved understanding of this relationship when fertilization occurs frequently across short rotations. Here, we studied temporal nitrogen (N) concentration ([N]) and content (Nc) dynamics under different silvicultural practices (herbicide, fertilization, and planting density) throughout early loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) stand development (5 years). We describe relationships of [N] and Nc of different stand components (foliage, branches, stem, roots, and competing vegetation) with carbon and biomass. Our results demonstrate that [N] of perennial loblolly tissues do not respond to silvicultural practices and progressively decrease through development. While foliar [N] was most responsive to resource availability, it was not consistent across time. Controlling competing vegetation was crucial to promote the use of site resources by the crop tree and increased loblolly Nc by >500%. However, increased N uptake and expedited growth is dependent upon fertilization early in stand development. At age 5, herbicide plus reduced and full fertilization rates exhibited similar aboveground Nc, which was 32% higher than with herbicide only. Increasing planting density resulted in increased above- and belowground loblolly Nc; however, increases in Nc were not proportional with increases in planting density. Net primary productivity and N uptake were linearly related, but age/development strongly controlled N use efficiency. Our study helps to understand complex relationships between N, biomass, and silvicultural practices during early stand development and demonstrates that temporal evaluation of nutrient dynamics is crucial to better understand loblolly pine growth, carbon sequestration potential, and to inform sustainable silvicultural practices across short rotations.

Retaining harvest residues (HR) in the field is considered an option to recycle carbon (C) and nutrients in short-rotation plantations, but the fate of HR in the soil remains unclear. The effects of HR management and nitrogen (N) availability on soil organic matter (SOM) pools and microbial community structure of forest plantations represent a major knowledge gap. To fill this gap, we explored how management scenarios that differed in the amount and type of HR [removal of all residues (-R), residue retention without (+R/-B), or with bark (+R/+B)] and N availability [0 (-N) or 200 kg N ha-1 (+N)] influenced microbial activity and structure and SOM fractions in a recently afforested grassland. Specifically, we measured HR decomposition, carbon dioxide efflux (respired CO2), phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA), and determined changes in particulate (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) over 12 months using differences in δ13C natural abundance between Eucalyptus HR and grassland soils (δ13C ∼-28 ‰ and -13 ‰, respectively). Microbial respiration was stimulated by HR retention (+R). Bark retention reduced HR half-life by ∼70 days, on average, while N had little influence. Bacterial groups (Gram-positive and Gram-negative) were the primary decomposer of eucalypt HR, while Actinobacteria used more of the former soil organic carbon (SOC). +R/+B increased fungal biomarker PLFA concentration and fungal:bacterial ratio, suggesting a key role of Fungi in the fragmentation of woody HR. N influence on microbial community structure and SOM pools was dependent upon HR management. Retaining HR increased SOC concentrations, most significantly in the 0–1 cm soil depth and POM fraction, and when bark was included. +R/+B resulted in higher POM-C concentrations (up to +37%) and more depleted δ13C-POM compared with -R and +R/-B, respectively. Collectively, our results suggest it is feasible to increase POM-C and fungal abundance through HR management practices in the early stages of decomposition, which may potentially contribute to SOC stabilization in the long-term. Yet our findings remain to be tested in long-term studies, we provide quantitative evidence of the potential of a more conservative HR management to contribute to the sustainability of eucalypt plantations.

Production forestry in the southeast US has been partially transitioned to intensively managed short rotations (~10 years), in which multiple silvicultural interventions are performed during forest development. Understanding the responses to silvicultural practices and continued refinement of site-specific recommendations is critical to sustainably maximize forest production. We evaluated the effects of silvicultural practices (herbicide, fertilization, and planting density) on growth, stand homogeneity, and above- and belowground biomass accumulation and partitioning of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) throughout early stand development (age 5 years) in the southeastern US. Five treatments with eight replications each were tested: no herbicide and no fertilization (C); herbicide only (H); herbicide and half-reduced fertilization rate (R); herbicide and full fertilization (F); and increased stand density (60+ %; 1346 vs. 2152 trees per hectare) with herbicide and full fertilization rate (D). Allometric equations generated from destructive harvests were applied to annual diameter measurements to estimate plot-level biomass and allocation. Herbicide was crucial to promote stand uniformity and increase yield (~600+ % stem biomass compared with C at age 5). Aboveground biomass was similar in R and F treatments, which was ~25% higher than in H at age 5. Increasing planting density along with multiple herbicide and fertilizer applications yielded higher biomass without compromising individual tree size (diameter and height). There was little effect of silviculture practices on allocation patterns. Our results parallel what was found for fertilization with herbicide from a number of loblolly stands under similar conditions and indicate a ~28% volume gain with fertilization during early stand development. Similarly, our results were consistent with other studies implementing similar differences in planting density and suggest a ~26% volume gain through early stand development with an initial 60% increase in planting density. Our study helps to understand complex relationships between production and silvicultural practices during early stand development and demonstrates that silvicultural prescriptions can be optimized to increase sustainability of production forestry.

Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and chemometric methods were used to predict the chemical properties of decomposing eucalyptus harvest residues to better understand the decomposition process of these materials. Leaves, twigs, branches, and bark from a decomposition experimental set up in commercial plantations were sampled for one year. The contents of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), extractives (EX), acid-soluble lignin (SL), Klason insoluble lignin (KL) and holocellulose (HC) were determined by the reference method in the collected samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to distinguish the types of harvest residues throughout the decomposition period. Multi-residue regression models were built from the NIR spectra using partial least squares regression (PLS). Two feature selection methods, i.e., ordered predictors selection (OPS) and genetic algorithm (GA), were applied and compared. The OPS and GA did not differ statistically; however, compared with the GA, OPS was more computationally efficient and selected fewer variables. Using the PLS-OPS models, the root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) for C, N, EX, SL, KL and HC were 19.70, 0.08, 0.74, 0.39, 28.13 and 33.99, respectively, and the prediction correlations (Rp) for these properties were 0.94, 0.99, 0.99, 0.99, 0.96 and 0.98, respectively. PLS-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to classify the samples over the decomposition time and provided a good separation. Some mismatches obtained in the modeled classes were explained by the differences in the decomposition rate and changes in the chemical composition of the different harvest residue components that were evaluated. The results showed the feasibility of NIR spectroscopy and chemometric methods to evaluate the chemistry of decomposing eucalyptus harvest residues, indicating that these methods can be used as rapid and inexpensive alternatives to conventional methods to help understand the decomposition process.

Nitrogen (N) fertilization effects on Eucalyptus growth and soil carbon (C) stocks are still controversial. We set up an N fertilization experiment in southern Brazil to evaluate initial tree growth and changes in soil organic matter (SOM). Four N levels (24–Reference, 36, 48 and 108 kg ha−1 of N) were tested and tree growth was assessed during the first two years. Afterwards, representative trees were chosen to evaluate fine-root biomass (FRB) and its spatial distribution. Soil was sampled to a 40-cm depth and SOM was fractionated in Particulate (POM) and Mineral-Associated Organic Matter (MAOM) for C and N content, and δ13C determination. Positive N effect on tree growth was seen only for tree height. N addition resulted in higher FRB. Changes in SOM were more expressive in top-soil layers. Overall, afforestation had positive effects on soil C. Increasing reference N dose resulted in higher C and N content in both SOM fractions. C and N dynamics were tightly correlated, especially in MAOM. Eucalypt-derived C was on average three-fold higher in POM. In summary, we showed that N fertilization may have positive but limited effects on tree growth, nevertheless it enhances fine-root biomass and C and N accumulation in SOM pools.

Eucalyptus forests in southern Bahia (BA) are planted in soils with a sandy surface layer and humid tropical climate, conditions that lead to soil carbon (C) decomposition. Recent studies have shown that nitrogen (N) may be important for soil C stabilization. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of Eucalyptus harvest residues and nitrogen fertilization to C stabilization in Ultisols of southern BA. The experiment was conducted in Eucalyptus clonal plantations cultivated in two regions of Eunápolis, BA, Brazil, with different clay content: southern region (140 g kg-1 of clay) and western region (310 g kg-1 of clay). Five treatments were evaluated: one control (CTR), without Eucalyptus harvest residues and N fertilization, and four treatments with harvest residues combined with four rates of N fertilization: 0, 25, 50, and 100 kg ha-1. Soil samples were collected from the 0.00-0.10, 0.10-0.20, 0.20-0.40, and 0.40-0.60 m layers at the beginning and the end of the experiment (36 months). The amount of C and N and the C and N isotopic ratio (δ13C and δ15N) of particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) were determined. In the southern region after 36 months, the C-MAOM stocks in the 0.00-0.10 m layer of the CTR decreased by 33 %. The addition of harvest residue followed by 100 kg ha-1 N increased C-POM and N-POM stocks (0.00-0.10 m) compared to the CTR, and the final N-POM stocks and residue-C recovery in the surface soil layer were positively correlated with the increase in N fertilization rates. In the western region, residue maintenance resulted in increased C-MAOM stocks (0.00-0.10 m) compared to the CTR, but an increase in N availability reduced this increment. The increase in N fertilization rates did not alter C stocks, but reduced N stocks of POM and MAOM in the upper soil layer. At the end of the experiment, N fertilizer recovery (0.00-0.60 m) was similar among the regions evaluated. In soil with lower clay content, higher N availability led to higher C and N stocks in the particulate fraction. In soils with high clay content, physical and chemical protections are more important than N fertilization for soil C stabilization, and just maintaining harvest residues may suffice to increase C and N in the more stable SOM fraction.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar o efeito de diferentes intensidades de desbaste sobre a forma do fuste de povoamentos naturais de Eremanthus incanus. Para tal, utilizaram-se dados de um experimento implantado em 2002, em um local de larga ocorrência da espécie, localizado no município de Morro do Pilar/MG. Aproximadamente três anos após uma intensa regeneração da espécie, proporcionada pela ocorrência de fogo, foram aplicadas cinco diferentes intensidades de desbaste, para posterior comparação com a testemunha sem desbaste, totalizando seis tratamentos. Sete anos e meio após a aplicação dos tratamentos, foram cubadas 360 árvores, em pé, distribuídas nos diferentes tratamentos e classes diamétricas. Foram testados os modelos de afilamento propostos por Schöepfer (1966), Hradetzky (1976) e Kozak, Munro e Smith (1969), e a possibilidade de agrupamento dos tratamentos no modelo selecionado pelo teste de identidade. O modelo proposto por Schöepfer (1966) foi o mais acurado e preciso na estimativa dos diâmetros ao longo do fuste. Enquanto os diâmetros a diferentes alturas foram estimados satisfatoriamente, todos os três modelos avaliados apresentaram tendência a subestimar o volume para as árvores maiores. Pelo teste de identidade de modelos, verificou-se a possibilidade de agrupamento da equação de afilamento para as duas menores intensidades de desbaste, bem como o agrupamento das árvores nos três tratamentos onde o espaço vital disponível era maior. As árvores conduzidas em menores densidades apresentaram forma mais cônica em relação às árvores conduzidas em maiores densidades. A testemunha apresentou árvores com características específicas, menos cônicas, e necessidade de utilização de uma equação exclusiva para quantificação dos seus múltiplos produtos. This study aimed to analyze the effect of different thinning intensities on stem taper of Eremanthus incanus in naturally regenerated stands. Data from an experiment located at Morro do Pilar/MG and installed in 2002 were used. About three years after a fire occurrence that provided an intense regeneration of Eremanthus incanus, five thinning intensities were applied and compared with a control treatment with no thinning. Seven and a half years after installation of the trial 360 standing trees in the different thinning treatments and diameter classes were scaled. Three taper equations were tested: Schöepfer (1966), Hradetzky (1976) and Kozak, Munro e Smith (1969), as well as the possibility of grouping the treatments into one equation using the identity test. The equation proposed by Schöepfer (1966) was the most accurate and precise in estimating the diameters along the stem. While the diameters at different stem height were satisfactorily estimated, the three equations tested tended to underestimate the volume of the larger trees. Using the identity test, it was possible to use one taper equation for the two lower thinning intensities, and another to represent the trees placed in the three treatments with higher thinning intensities. Trees grown at lower densities of plants per hectare were found to be more conical compared to the trees at higher densities. Trees of the control treatment were less conical and needed an exclusive taper equation.

The potential export of nutrients by eucalypt plantations harvest raises concern about environmental and wood production sustainability. Keeping non-commercial components in the field can minimize it. However, little is known about changes in chemistry of decomposing eucalypt harvest residues. Simulated harvest residue management practices fully replicated across 11 Brazilian representative sites were undertaken to evaluate the dynamics of macronutrient release. We studied the influence of de-barking in the field, the use of an external source of nitrogen and the placement of harvest residues (remained on the surface or incorporated into the soil). After the experiment set up, residues were sampled five times and contents of Ca, Mg, N, P, K and S were determined. We used the remaining mass and nutrient concentration to fit the single exponential decay model (X = X0e−kt) and calculate half-life (hl = ln(2)/k) of each nutrient. At the end, we calculate element ratios to see differences in residue chemistry. The presence of bark and residue incorporation into soil enhanced decomposition and decreased nutrient half-life across all site. External N had little or no effect on nutrient dynamics. Site had significant effect on nutrient half-life, but only low correlations with climate or edaphic properties could be found. C:N, C:S and C:Ca ratios were much narrower at the end. On the other hand, N:P, N:K, Ca:S and Ca:Mg were wider. C:P varied among sites, but averaged almost the same as in the beginning. Ca was the nutrient that presented the greatest immobilization, particularly in the absence of bark, indicating a critical role of this element on decomposition under the conditions tested. Our results suggest that nutrient release is more controlled by management, chemical properties of the residues and specific decomposer community needs than climate or soil properties. Microbial community seems to change their carbon use efficiency and immobilize nutrients in limiting conditions.
