Chiral active fluids show the emergence of a turbulent behavior characterized by multiple dynamic vortices whose maximum size is specific for each experimental system. This is in contrast to hydrodynamic simulations in which the size of vortices is only limited by the system size. We propose and develop an approach to model the effect of friction close to a surface in a particle based hydrodynamic simulation method in two dimensions, in which the friction coefficient can be related to the system parameters and to the emergence of a damping length. This length limits the size of the emergent vortices, and influences other relevant system properties such as the actuated velocity, rotational diffusion, or the cutoff of the energy spectra. Comparison of simulation and experimental results show a good agreement which demonstrates the predictive capabilities of the approach, which can be applied to a wider class of quasi-two-dimensional systems with friction., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We study the orientational dynamics of heavy silica microrods flowing through a microfluidic channel. Comparing experiments and Brownian dynamics simulations we identify different particle orbits, in particular in-plane tumbling behavior, which cannot be explained by classical Jeffery theory, and we relate this behavior to the rotational diffusion of the rods. By constructing the full, three-dimensional, orientation distribution, we describe the rod trajectories and quantify the persistence of Jeffery orbits using temporal correlation functions of the Jeffery constant. We find that our colloidal rods lose memory of their initial configuration in about a second, corresponding to half a Jeffery period., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report an entropy-driven orientational hopping transition in a magnetically confined colloidal Janus rod. In a magnetic field, the sedimented rod randomly hops between horizontal and vertical states: the latter state comes at a substantial gravitational cost at no reduction of magnetic potential energy. The probability distribution over the angles of the rod shows that the presence of an external magnetic field leads to the emergence of a metastable vertical state separated from the ground state by an effective barrier. This barrier does not come from the potential energy but rather from the vast gain in phase space available to the rod as it approaches the vertical state. The loss of rotational degree of freedom that gives rise to this effect is a statistical mechanical analogue of the phenomenon of gimbal lock from classical mechanics., Comment: To be published in Physical Review Letters

We study the heterogeneous dynamics of attractive colloidal particles close to the gel transition using confocal microscopy experiments combined with a theoretical statistical analysis. We focus on single particle dynamics and show that the self part of the van Hove distribution function is not the Gaussian expected for a Fickian process, but that it reflects instead the existence, at any given time, of colloids with widely different mobilities. Our confocal microscopy measurements can be described well by a simple analytical model based on a conventional continuous time random walk picture, as already found in several other glassy materials. In particular, the theory successfully accounts for the presence of broad tails in the van Hove distributions that exhibit exponential, rather than Gaussian, decay at large distance., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figs.
