RESUMO: O texto discute a relação entre a Lei n.º 13.415/2017, a Base Nacional Comum Curricular - BNCC - e as Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais para o Ensino Médio - DCNEM. Com aporte em discussão bibliográfica e documental, analisa a reforma do ensino médio, destaca as audiências públicas, evidencia os elementos controversos na proposta para formação e expõe a vinculação dessa proposição com os organismos internacionais no direcionamento neoliberal. Como resultados, aponta que a reforma traz traços reacionários e de acentuação da desigualdade educacional que impactam a formação da juventude e o trabalho desenvolvido pela escola. É um assunto importante a ser analisado por todos os professores que visam ao desenvolvimento da educação média para a formação emancipadora da juventude brasileira, num trabalho que leve em conta a compreensão do sujeito jovem enquanto ser social.

O artigo tenta identificar novas dinâmicas no mercado de trabalho, face aos processos globais, a partir do que vem ocorrendo no setor automotivo brasileiro nos anos 2000, focando particularmente o caso do pólo de Gravataí (RS). O argumento central da análise é de que a constituição de processos globais promove novas dinâmicas em mercados de trabalho regionais. A abertura de mercados de produtos, as composições entre capitais nacionais e estrangeiros e os investimentos em novas plantas industriais expressam processos globais que poderiam criar novas atividades e funções produtivas, empresas e empregos, assim como estimular capacidades e conhecimentos. Por outro lado, a competitividade, instabilidade e interdependência do sistema global reforçariam a seletividade social nos mercados de trabalho regionais, constituindo novos riscos e ansiedades para segmentos econômicos e sociais vulneráveis. Isso tenderia a mobilizar instituições no esforço de tentar reparar distorções face à nova complexidade do mercado de trabalho

Water repellency has significant potential in applications like self-cleaning coatings, anti-staining textiles, and electronics. This study introduces a novel nanocomposite system incorporating functionalized Al 2 O 3 and CeO 2 nanoparticles within a polyurethane matrix to achieve hydrophobic and UV-blocking properties. The nanoparticles were functionalized using an octadecyl phosphonic acid solution and characterized by FTIR and XPS, confirming non-covalent functionalization. Spin-coated polyurethane coatings with functionalized and non-functionalized Al 2 O 3 , CeO 2, and binary Al 2 O 3 -CeO 2 nanoparticles were analyzed. The three-layered Al 2 O 3 -CeO 2 -ODPA binary system achieved a contact angle of 166.4° and 85% transmittance in the visible range. Incorporating this binary functionalized system into a 0.4% w / v polyurethane solution resulted in a nanocomposite with 75% visible transmittance, 60% at 365 nm UV, and a 147.7° contact angle after three layers. These findings suggest that ODPA-functionalized nanoparticles, when combined with a polymer matrix, offer a promising approach to developing advanced hydrophobic and UV-protective coatings with potential applications across various industrial sectors.

Cardiac amyloidosis is a cardiomyopathy resulting from the extracellular deposition of proteins such as transthyretin (TTR). We present the case of a 72-year-old male with hereditary cardiac amyloidosis. After confirming the diagnosis, tafamidis, a TTR stabilizer, was administered. Remarkably, tafamidis, when coupled with peritoneal dialysis for chronic kidney disease, maintained stability in both cardiac and renal functions. Previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of tafamidis in reducing all-cause mortality and cardiovascular hospitalizations, although its use in severe renal failure lacks specific evaluation. In this work, the SET and RESET processes of bipolar resistive switching memories with silicon nanocrystals (Si-NCs) embedded in an oxide matrix is simulated by a stochastic model. This model is based on the estimation of two-dimensional oxygen vacancy configurations and their relationship with the resistive state. The simulation data are compared with the experimental current-voltage data of Si-NCs/SiO2 multilayer-based memristor devices. Devices with 1 and 3 Si-NCs/SiO2 bilayers were analyzed. The Si-NCs are assumed as agglomerates of fixed oxygen vacancies, which promote the formation of conductive filaments (CFs) through the multilayer according to the simulations. In fact, an intermediate resistive state was observed in the forming process (experimental and simulated) of the 3-BL device, which is explained by the preferential generation of oxygen vacancies in the sites that form the complete CFs, through Si-NCs.

In this work, we report the digital and analog resistive-switching (RS) characteristics in a memristor based on silicon nanocrystals (Si-NCs) integrated into a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structure. Si-NCs with a diameter of 5.48 ± 1.24 nm embedded in a SiO 2 /Si-NCs/SiO 2 multilayer structure acts as an RS layer. These devices exhibit bipolar RS with an intermediate resistance step during SET and RESET processes, which is believed to lie in the Si-NCs layer acting as charge-trapping nodes. The endurance studies of about 70 DC cycles indicate an ON/OFF ratio of ~10 6 and a retention time larger than 10 4 s. Long-term potentiation (LTP, -2 V) and long-term depression (LTD, +4 V) are obtained by applying consecutive identical pulse voltages of 150 ms duration. The current value gradually increases/decreases (LTP/LTD) as the pulse number increases. Three consecutive identical pulses of -2 V/150 ms (LTP) separated by 5 and 15 min show that the last current value obtained at the end of each pulse train is kept, confirming an analog RS behavior. These characteristics provide a possible way to mimic biological synapse functions for applications in neuromorphic computing in Si-NCs-based CMOS structures.

Agro-industrial residues represent more than 60% of organic wastes worldwide, which could be used to generate other by-products or to be incorporated into other production chains. For example, bagasse is a waste from the tequila industry in Mexico that could be implemented for mushroom cultivation. Additionally, the substrate influences the growth, development, and production of secondary metabolites of fungi. This work presents a comparative experiment that studies the metabolite production in Pleurotus djamor mushrooms on agave bagasse and barley straw (traditional substrate). The biological efficiency (BE), yield, phenolics and flavonoids, antioxidant capacity, tannins, and the identification of low molecular weight metabolites were evaluated. Five treatments were proposed according to the following mixtures of agave bagasse: barley straw: T1 (1:0), T2 (3:1), T3 (1:1), T4 (1:3), and T5 (0:1). T2 had the highest yield (13.39 ± 3.23%), BE (56.7 ± 13.71%), and flavonoids (44.25 mg rutin equivalent (RE)/g); T3 obtained the highest phenol content (230.27 mg GAE/g); and T1 the highest tannins content (0.23 mg (+) catechin equivalent (CE)/g). Finally, T1 and T5 are the ones that present the greatest number of primary metabolites, including hydroxycitric acid, 2-deoxy-D-galactose, D-mannose, paromomycin, palmitic acid, pyrrole, mannitol, and DL arabinose, while in T2, T3, and T4 only two chemical compounds were found present (palmitic acid and pyrrole in T2, silicic acid and pyrrole in T3 and 2-deoxy-D-galactose and quinoline in T4). The cultivation substrate influences the concentration of bioactive molecules in the fruiting bodies of P. djamor . Additionally, P. djamor's degradation of agave bagasse residue generates a potential application for agro-industrial residue management at a low cost.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a complex disease, determined by genetic, environmental and lifestyle-associated risk factors. Genetic (inherited) factors have great influence on its development; however, most cases of CRC are sporadic and gradually develop over several years. The main environmental risk factors are associated with b-catenin signaling pathway, including obesity, lack of physical activity, consumption of red and processed meats, alcoholism, and smoking. The pathway is related to cell homeostasis regulation and cell self-renewal during embryogenesis and adulthood. The main recommendation for preventing the development of CRC is to reduce the risk factors, increase the consumption of fruits, vegetables and grains, exercise regularly and limit the consumption of both alcohol and tobacco. However, family history and the presence of a hereditary syndrome increase the risk, which is why carrying out periodic examinations to detect CRC is suggested, using development predictors such as biochemical and molecular markers, which are discussed in this work., (Copyright: © 2023 Permanyer.)

In this work, we show a correlation between the composition and the microstructural and optical properties of bright and uniform luminescent porous silicon (PSi) films. PSi films were synthesized by electrochemical etching using nitric acid in an electrolyte solution. PSi samples synthesized with nitric acid emit stronger (up to six-fold greater) photoluminescence (PL) as compared to those obtained without it. The PL peak is shifted from 630 to 570 nm by changing the concentration ratio of the HF:HNO 3 :(EtOH-H 2 O) electrolyte solution, but also shifts with the excitation energy, indicating quantum confinement effects in the silicon nanocrystals (Si-NCs). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis shows a uniform silicon content in the PSi samples that emit the strongest PL. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals that the Si-NCs in these PSi samples are about ~2.9 ± 0.76 nm in size and are embedded in a dense and stoichiometric SiO 2 matrix, as indicated by the Fourier transform infrared analysis. On the other hand, the PSi films that show PL of low intensity present an abrupt change in the silicon content depth and the formation of non-bridging oxygen hole center defects.

Hass avocadoes are one of the most popular fruits consumed worldwide because of their nutritional and nutraceutical content. Nevertheless, these fruits are susceptible to phytopathogen attacks that decrease fruit quality during the postharvest period. Herein we present the results of the in situ fungistatic activity of four hybrid films (FT1−FT4) manufactured with chitosan and different concentrations of the essential oil of thyme (TvEO). The films were evaluated as biodegradable materials to prevent fruit decay triggered by Clonostachys rosea which is considered an emergent phytopathogen of this crop. The in situ fungistatic strength, spectroscopic properties (FT-IR), optical features (transmittance/opacity), and consistency obtained by microscopic analysis (SEM), indicated that the films FT3 and FT4 possessed the best physicochemical properties to protect Hass avocadoes against the soft rot produced by C. rosea. Avocadoes treated with the films FT3 and FT4 significantly (p < 0.01) conserved fruit firmness and nutritional composition (protein, fat, fiber, and reducing sugars) as well as the nutraceutical content (oleic, palmitoleic, linoleic, and palmitic acids) of infected avocados for 21 days. Our results validate the potential use of the films FT3 and FT4 to prevent the soft rot caused by C. rosea and to improve the shelf life of Hass avocadoes.

Nanostructured silver (Ag) and gold (Au) are widely known to be potent biocidal and cytotoxic agents as well as biocompatible nanomaterials. It has been recently reported that combining both metals in a specific chemical composition causes a significant enhancement in their antibacterial activity against antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, as well as in their anticancer effects, while preserving cytocompatibility properties. In this work, Ag/Au bimetallic nanoparticles over a complete atomic chemical composition range were prepared at 10 at% through a green, highly reproducible, and simple approach using starch as a unique reducing and capping agent. The noble metal nanosystems were thoroughly characterized by different analytical techniques, including UV-visible and FT-IR spectroscopies, XRD, TEM/EDS, XPS and ICP-MS. Moreover, absorption spectra simulations for representative colloidal Ag/Au-NP samples were conducted using FDTD modelling. The antibacterial properties of the bimetallic nanoparticles were determined against multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , showing a clear dose-dependent inhibition even at the lowest concentration tested (5 µg/mL). Cytocompatibility assays showed a medium range of toxicity at low and intermediate concentrations (5 and 10 µg/mL), while triggering an anticancer behavior, even at the lowest concentration tested, in a process involving reactive oxygen species production per the nanoparticle Au:Ag ratio. In this manner, this study provides promising evidence that the presently fabricated Ag/Au-NPs should be further studied for a wide range of antibacterial and anticancer applications.

Early diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection is very important to establish timely treatment. In the present report, through the examination carried out in otorhinolaryngology, we found a pearlescent vesicular enanthema in the upper palate in 954/958 patients with the classic strain and it was not found in patients with the English strain. This finding had not been reported. The patients were successfully treated on time, only two patients died, which was associated with decompensated diabetes mellitus. Graphene oxide (GO) is widely considered as a graphene precursor when chemically reduced. Nevertheless, through the precise control of two parameters: lateral size and oxidation degree, GO can be useful in many applications as modified graphene oxide or functional reduced graphene oxide. Commonly, the decrease in GO lateral size, involves a change in the C/O ratio and therefore a modification in a large number of characteristics. Here, a simple but effective approach to synthesize GO with lateral dimensions below 100 nm and without modification of its chemical, optical and electronic features is presented. The use of a sonifier at low temperature allows to rapidly reduce the lateral size in ∼82% while preserving the C/O ratio and consequently the chemical stability, the band gap, the electronic energy levels and the functionality. In the present work, non-stoichiometric silicon oxide films (SiO x ) deposited using a hot filament chemical vapor deposition technique at short time and simple parameters of depositions are reported. This is motivated by the numerous potential applications of SiO x films in areas such as optoelectronics. SiO x films were characterized with different spectroscopic techniques. The deposited films have interesting characteristics such as the presence of silicon nanoclusters without applying thermal annealing, in addition to a strong photoluminescence after applying thermal annealing in the vicinity of 1.5 eV, which may be attributed to the presence of small, oxidized silicon grains (less than 2 nm) or silicon nanocrystals (Si-nc). An interesting correlation was found between oxygen content, the presence of hydrogen, and the formation of defects in the material, with parameters such as the band gap and the Urbach energies. This correlation is interesting in the development of band gap engineering for this material for applications in photonic devices.

Purpose: DLG7 (disc large homolog 7) is a microtubule-associated protein encoded by DLGAP5 (DLG associated protein 5) gene and has an important role during spindle assembly. Spindle assembly deregulation is a well-known cause of genomic instability. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of DLGAP5 expression on survival and to evaluate its potential use as a biomarker in colorectal cancer (CRC)., Methods: DLGAP5 expression was measured in the primary tumor and corresponding normal mucosa samples from 109 patients with CRC and correlated to clinical and pathological data. The results were validated in a second, publically available patient cohort. Molecular effects of DLG7/DLGAP5 in CRC were analyzed via functional assays in knockdown cell lines., Results: DLGAP5 downregulation led to a significant reduction of the invasion and migration potential in CRC. In addition, DLGAP5 expression correlates with nodal status and advanced UICC stage (III-IV).Subgroup analyses revealed a correlation between DLGAP5 overexpression and poor survival in patients with non-metastatic disease (M0). Furthermore, overexpression of DLGAP5 is associated with worse overall survival in distinct molecular CRC subtypes., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest the importance of DLGAP5 in defining a more aggressive CRC phenotype. DLG7/DLGAP5 represents a potential biomarker for CRC in molecular subgroups of CRC.

Its pathophysiological mechanism in ALS1 is related to ischemia. Several molecular studies of the SOD1 gene show that point mutations are the most frequent. The most common mutations in familial cases are p.A4V, p.I113Y, p.G37R, p.D90A and p.E100G, which account for more than 80% of cases, although intronic mutations have also been described as responsible for ALS1. Sporadic cases are explained by mutations in other genes such as SETX and C9orf72. ALS1 is a complex disease with genetic heterogeneity. On the other hand, familial and sporadic cases have a different etiology, which is explained by molecular heterogeneity and multiple pathogenic mechanisms that lead to ALS1; oxidative stress and ischemia are not the only cause. El gen de la ataxina-2 es un blanco en la patogénesis de enfermedades complejas, entre ellas los factores de riesgo cardiovascular y enfermedades neurodegenerativas. El gen ATXN2 tiene un VNTR en el exón 1, cuya expansión por encima de las 30 repeticiones provoca al desarrollo de ataxia espinocerebelosa tipo 2; las repeticiones en rango menor se asocian con diabetes tipo 2 o esclerosis lateral amiotrófica. También este locus está ligado con fenotipos metabólicos e inflamatorios. Background: Achondrogenesis is a skeletal dysplasia characterized primarily by short stature, severe micromelia, short and narrow chest, prematurity, polyhydramnios, fetal hydrops, and in utero or neonatal death. Based on the radiological and histopathological findings, there are three types of achondrogenesis: type 1A (Houston-Harris), type 1B (Fraccaro) and type 2 (Langer-Saldino)., Clinical Case: A premature female product was studied whose clinical, radiological and histopathological characteristics were compatible with achondrogenesis Type 1A. The family information allowed us to conclude that the 4 products of the 6 previous pregnancies were affected. Statistical analysis in at least 4 families previously described, including this family case showed significant differences between expected and observed number of members, being incongruent with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance previously reported., Conclusions: therefore, it could be considered a new subtype of achondrogenesis type 1A due to the presence of a preferential germline mutation., (Copyright: © 2019 Permanyer.)

In the bioethanol industry and its derivative processes, 9-14 l of vinasse per liter of ethanol are obtained as residue, depending on whether or not a recirculation process is used. If the vinasse is discharged directly into water bodies without proper treatment it can produce negative effects on existing biota and on human health. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the capacity of a mixed treatment with Komagataeibacter kakiaceti GM5 and Trametes versicolor DSM 3086 to degrade and reduce the toxicity of this by-product. In order to carry out the tests, an experimental culture media of vinasse at 60% (v/v) was used. This culture was compared to a standard medium of glucose at 2% and, simultaneously, a mixed culture (bacterium-fungus) was used through a batch process in an orbital shaker. When compared to the treatments evaluated with individually grown microorganisms, the mixed treatment proposed produced the best COD results in vinasse degradation. However, better results were obtained when using the treatment with T. versicolor DSM 3086 for color removal and treatment with K. kakiaceti GM5 produced better results in terms of turbidity and toxicity. Although the simultaneous mixed treatment did not improve all the variables studied, it never showed the lowest performance. In this study, a novel binary nanocomposite system based on TiO₂-SiO₂ was functionalized with trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) and characterized by XPS and XRD. Results revealed that TiO₂-SiO₂ nanoparticles were covalently functionalized. Functionalized nanoparticles at low concentrations (0.1 wt % and 0.5 wt %) were dispersed in acrylic acid acting as a polymer matrix. Nanocomposite coatings analysis demonstrate to achieve superhydrophilic properties as well as very good optical characteristics. Water contact angle characterization showed the functionalization effect by achieving a superhydrophilic behavior with a contact angle less than 5°. UV-Vis measurements demonstrated high optical transmittance above 95% for the coatings. Based on the obtained results a mechanism describing the chemical interactions of the constituents responsible for the synergy in the nanocomposite as well as the morphological play role in the behavior are presented.

Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) is a worldwide public health problem. The etiology of the disease is multifactorial and is characterized by great heterogeneity of metabolic disorders. The most common are the insufficient production of insulin, insulin resistance and impaired incretin system. The specialist must understand the multi-causal nature of DM2 in the post-genomic era. This nature is determined by the additive effect of genes and environment, so there is no simple genetic epidemiological model to explain the inheritance pattern. Hence the need to establish the proportion of disease that is determined by genes and the contribution of environmental factors, the combination of which regulates the threshold or tolerance level for diabetes development. Given this complexity in DM2 in this work are discussed the various existing theories of causality of this disease, which will permit us to understand the interaction between the environment and the human genome, and also to know how risk factors or predisposition to this disease influence, laying the grounds that delimit environment interaction with the genome., (Copyright: © 2017 SecretarÍa de Salud.)

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in western countries and is driven by the Wnt signaling pathway. LIM-domain-binding protein 1 (LDB1) interacts with the Wnt signaling pathway and has been connected to malignant diseases. We therefore aimed to evaluate the role of LDB1 in CRC., Results: Overexpression of LDB1 in CRC is associated with strikingly reduced overall and metastasis free survival in all three independent patient cohorts. The expression of LDB1 positively correlates with genes involved in the Wnt signaling pathway (CTNNB1, AXIN2, MYC and CCND1). Overexpression of LDB1 in CRC cell lines induced Wnt pathway upregulation as well as increased invasivity and proliferation. Upon separate analysis, the role of LDB1 proved to be more prominent in proximal CRC, whereas distal CRC seems to be less influenced by LDB1., Materials and Methods: The expression of LDB1 was measured via RT-qPCR in 59 clinical tumor and normal mucosa samples and correlated to clinical end-points. The role of LDB1 was examined in two additional large patient cohorts from publicly available microarray and RNAseq datasets. Functional characterization was done by lentiviral overexpression of LDB1 in CRC cell lines and TOP/FOP, proliferation and scratch assays., Conclusions: LDB1 has a strong role in CRC progression, confirmed in three large, independent patient cohorts. The in vitro data confirm an influence of LDB1 on the Wnt signaling pathway and tumor cell proliferation. LDB1 seems to have a more prominent role in proximal CRC, which confirms the different biology of proximal and distal CRC.

The prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) is closely linked to the occurrence of distant metastases, which putatively develop from circulating tumor cells (CTCs) shed into circulation by the tumor. As far more CTCs are shed than eventually metastases develop, only a small subfraction of CTCs harbor full tumorigenic potential. The aim of this study was to further characterize CRC-derived CTCs to eventually identify the clinically relevant subfraction of CTCs.We established an orthotopic mouse model of CRC which reliably develops metastases and CTCs. We were able to culture the resulting CTCs in vitro, and demonstrated their tumor-forming capacity when re-injected into mice. The CTCs were then subjected to qPCR expression profiling, revealing downregulation of epithelial and proliferation markers. Genes associated with cell-cell adhesion (claudin-7, CD166) were significantly downregulated, indicating a more metastatic phenotype of CTCs compared to bulk tumor cells derived from hepatic metastases. The stem cell markers DLG7 and BMI1 were significantly upregulated in CTC, indicating a stem cell-like phenotype and increased capacity of tumor formation and self-renewal. In concert with their in vitro and in vivo tumorigenicity, these findings indicate stem cell properties of mouse-derived CTCs.In conclusion, we developed an orthotopic mouse model of CRC recapitulating the process of CRC dissemination. CTCs derived from this model exhibit stem-cell like characteristics and are able to form colonies in vitro and tumors in vivo. The prognosis of colorectal cancer is closely linked to the occurrence of distant metastases. Systemic dissemination is most likely caused by circulating tumor cells (CTC). Despite the fundamental role of CTC within the metastatic cascade, technical obstacles have so far prevented detailed genomic and, in particular, phenotypic analyses of CTC, which may provide molecular targets to delay or prevent distant metastases. We show here a detailed genomic analysis of single colorectal cancer-derived CTC by array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH), mutational profiling, and microsatellite instability (MSI) analysis. Furthermore, we report the first gene expression analysis of manually selected colorectal cancer-derived CTC by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) to investigate transcriptional changes, enabling CTC to survive in circulation and form distant metastases. aCGH confirmed the tumor cell identity of CellSearch-isolated colorectal cancer-derived CTC. Mutational and MSI analyses revealed mutational profiles of CTC to be similar, but not identical to the corresponding tumor tissue. Several CTC exhibited mutations in key genes such as KRAS or TP53 that could not be detected in the tumor. Gene expression analyses revealed both a pronounced upregulation of CD47 as a potential immune-escape mechanism and a significant downregulation of several other pathways, suggesting a dormant state of viable CTC. Our results suggest mutational heterogeneity between tumor tissue and CTC that should be considered in future trials on targeted therapy and monitoring of response. The finding of upregulated immune-escape pathways, which may be responsible for survival of CTC in circulation, could provide a promising target to disrupt the metastatic cascade in colorectal cancer. A reduction in the amount of time spent sleeping occurs chronically in modern society. Clinical and experimental studies in humans and animal models have shown that immune function is impaired when sleep loss is experienced. Sleep loss exerts a strong regulatory influence on peripheral levels of inflammatory mediators of the immune response. An increasing number of research projects support the existence of reciprocal regulation between sleep and low-intensity inflammatory response. Recent studies show that sleep deficient humans and rodents exhibit a proinflammatory component; therefore, sleep loss is considered as a risk factor for developing cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis). Circulating levels of proinflammatory mediators depend on the intensity and duration of the method employed to induce sleep loss. Recognizing the fact that the concentration of proinflammatory mediators is different between acute and chronic sleep-loss may expand the understanding of the relationship between sleep and the immune response. The aim of this review is to integrate data from recent published reports (2002-2013) on the effects of sleep loss on the immune response. This review may allow readers to have an integrated view of the mechanisms involved in central and peripheral deficits induced by sleep loss.

There is scarce information concerning the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii infection in people of rural Mexico. Anti-T. gondii immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM antibodies were sought in 462 adult inhabitants from 3 rural communities of Durango, Mexico, using enzyme-linked immunoassays. In total, 110 (23.8%) of 463 persons had IgG anti-T. gondii antibodies. Ten (2.2%) of them also had IgM anti-T. gondii antibodies. Prevalences of T. gondii IgG antibodies in the 3 communities varied from 14.8 to 35.8%. The highest prevalence of infection was observed in participants older than 70 yr and in those with good housing conditions. Toxoplasma gondii infection was significantly associated with consumption of squirrel (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 4.22; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.11-16.05) and turkey meat (adjusted OR = 4.58; 95% CI = 1.14-18.44). This is the first epidemiological study of T. gondii prevalence in rural Mexico.

We sought to determine the frequency of serological markers of selected infections in a population of psychiatric patients in Durango City, Mexico, and to determine whether there are any epidemiological characteristics of the subjects associated with the infections. One hundred and five inpatients of a public psychiatric hospital of Durango were examined for HBsAg, anti-HCV antibodies, anti-HIV antibodies, anti-Brucella antibodies, rapid plasma reagin and anti-Cysticercus antibodies by commercially available assays. Anti-Cysticercus antibodies were confirmed by Western blot and HBsAg by neutralization assay. Epidemiological data from each participant were also obtained. Seroprevalences of HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti-HIV, anti-Brucella, rapid plasma reagin and anti-Cysticercus antibodies found were 0.0%, 4.8%, 0.9%, 0.0%, 1.9%, and 0.9%, respectively. Overall, 9 (8.6%) inpatients showed seropositivity to any infection marker. We concluded that our psychiatric inpatients have serological evidence of a number of infections. HCV is an important pathogen among our psychiatric inpatients. Health care strategies for prevention and control of infections in Mexican psychiatric patients should be considered.

Background: Perinatal period begins at 22 gestational weeks and ends seven days after birth. Perinatal mortality is an important quality indicator of the obstetric and pediatric care available, and representative of the population's health service., Objective: To know fetal, early neonatal, and perinatal dead rates, and them main mortality causes., Patients and Methods: Descriptive and retrospective study at IMSS's no. 32 UMAE (Monterrey, Nuevo León, México), from January 2002 to December 2006. Mortality rates during fetal and perinatal, or neonatal periods, were estimated per 1,000 births or 1,000 live born, respectively., Results: There were 1,681 deaths: 747 stillbirths and 934 neonatal. Two hundred and nineteen (29.3%) stillbirths had 22 to 27 gestational weeks, and 528 (70.6%) had 28. Three hundred and sixty neonatal deaths (38.5%) occurred before 27th gestational week, 320 (34.2%) between weeks 28th and 35th, and 254 (27.1%) after 36 weeks of pregnancy. Seven hundred and sixty four neonates died within 0 to 6 days of life, and 170 (18%) between seventh to 28th days of life. Fetal, neonatal, early neonatal, and late neonatal mortality rates were 7.2 in 1,000 births, 9.08 in 1,000 live born, 7.42 in 1,000 live born, and 1.65 in 1,000 births, respectively, and overall perinatal mortality rate was 14.58 in 1,000 births., Conclusions: Stillbirth, early neonatal, and perinatal mortality rates of this study were under national mean. Main mortality causes (70%) were congenital defects and prematurity.

Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are structurally similar parasites, with many hosts in common. The prevalence of antibodies to T. gondii and N. caninum was determined in sera from dogs from Durango City, Mexico. Using a modified agglutination test, antibodies to T. gondii were found in 52 (51.5%) of the 101 dogs with titers of 1:25 in 27, 1:50 in 11, 1:100 in 5, 1:200 in 4, 1:400 in 2, 1:800 in 2, and 1:3,200 or higher in 1. Antibodies to N. caninum were determined by the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and the Neospora sp. agglutination test (NAT). Two of the 101 dogs had N. caninum antibodies; these dogs did not have T. gondii antibodies, supporting the specificity of the tests used. The N. caninum antibody titers of the 2 dogs were: 1:400 by IFAT and 1:200 by NAT in 1, and 1:25 by NAT and IFAT in the other. Results indicate that these 2 structurally similar protozoans are antigenically different.
