The eastern coastal basins of Brazil are a series of small and isolated rivers that drain directly into the Atlantic Ocean. During the Pleistocene, sea-level retreat caused by glaciations exposed the continental shelf, resulting in enlarged paleodrainages that connected rivers that are isolated today. Using Geographic Information System (GIS), we infer the distribution of these paleodrainages, and their properties for the east Brazilian coast. Specifically, using elevation/bathymetric data for the largest sea-level retreats during the Pleistocene, the paleodrainages, their area and the number of contemporary basins connected by each palaeodrainage, was inferred. For the 145 inferred paleodrainages, total paleodrainage area is strongly correlated with the contemporary area encompassed by each paleodrainage, as well as with the number of contemporary basins encompassed by a paleodrainage. Differences in the continental shelf exposure along the coast affected the degree of past connectivity among contemporary rivers. With our results freely available, we discuss how paleodrainages have tremendous utility in biological studies, especially in regions with limited geologic data. With respect to the diverse ichthyofauna of the Brazilian coast, and its high endemism, we highlight how the inferred paleodrainages provide a backdrop to test hypotheses about the effect of past riverine connectivity on diversity patterns.

RESUMO As bacias costeiras do leste do Brasil são formadas por uma série de rios pequenos e isolados que drenam diretamente para o Oceano Atlântico. Durante o Pleistoceno, o recuo do nível do mar causado por glaciações expôs a plataforma continental, resultando em paleodrenagens amplas que conectaram rios atualmente isolados. Usando o Sistema de Informações Geográficas (GIS), inferimos a distribuição destas paleodrenagens e suas propriedades ao longo da costa leste do Brasil. Especificamente, utilizando dados de elevação/batimetria para as maiores regressões marinhas do Pleistoceno, inferimos as paleodrenagens, suas áreas e quantas bacias contemporâneas foram conectadas por cada paleodrenagem. Para as 145 paleodrenagens inferidas, uma forte correlação é observada entre a área das paleodrenagens e a área atualmente exposta de cada paleodrenagem, bem como a quantidade de bacias contemporâneas conectadas por uma paleodrenagem. Diferenças na exposição da plataforma continental ao longo da costa afetaram o grau de conectividade passada entre os rios. Com estes resultados publicamente disponíveis, discutimos como as paleodrenagens são extremamente úteis para estudos biológicos, especialmente em regiões com dados geológicos limitados. A respeito da diversa ictiofauna da costa brasileira e seus altos níveis de endemismo, destacamos como estas paleodrenagens fornecem uma base importante para o teste de hipóteses a respeito do efeito da conectividade passada dos rios nos padrões de diversidade biológica.

Existem fortes evidências de que os padrões de distribuição da diversidade existente na Floresta Atlântica atual podem ser explicados, em grande parte, pelas alterações climáticas ocorridas durante esse período. Ainda assim, existem muitas lacunas e divergências na literatura quanto aos padrões de ocupação que essas vegetações desenvolveram durante essas mudanças ambientais. Através da utilização de uma espécie de cacto epifítico (Lepismium cruciforme) – com ampla distribuição na Floresta Atlântica – como modelo para estudos filogeográficos, realizamos análises intraespecíficas em oito populações ao longo de remanescentes florestais em unidades de conservação e manchas florestais urbanas para responder as seguintes questões: a) Podemos identificar multiplas linhagens de L. cruciforme entre diferentes populações localizadas na Floresta Estacional Semidecidual? b) Caso detectadas, essas diferentes linhagens estariam associadas a algum tipo de isolamento geográfico? c) As populações de L. cruciforme sofreram oscilações demográficas históricas? d) Existe um gradiente longitudinal continente/oceano de diversidade genética? Através do marcador molecular nuclear (ITS), analisamos 71 sequências de 638 locus e identificamos nove haplótipos diferentes. Linhagens altamente diversificadas, em relação as demais, foram identificadas nas regiões do Pontal do Paranapanema, onde suas populações parecem ter sido influenciadas pela existência de uma barreira fluvial e, na região dos Campos Gerais, pelo provável confinamento à refúgios florestais cercados por vegetação aberta de campos de gramíneas. Os resultados demonstraram que as populações de L. cruciforme sofreram um gargalo demográfico seguido de uma recente expansão populacional, assim como esperado para espécies florestais. Não foi observado sinais um gradiente longitudinal continente/oceano de diversidade genética. Em vez disso, pudemos observar maiores valores diversidade genética em linhagens localizadas em regiões extremas da distribuição longitudinal, contrapondo com diversidades mais baixas na região central da distribuição amostrada. O uso desta espécie epífita em estudos filogeográficos se demonstrou promissor para a compreensão da dinâmica vegetacional da Floresta Atlântica, sobretudo das florestas Estacionais Semideciduais. Futuros trabalhos envolvendo outras espécies epifíticas, bem como estudos ecológicos envolvendo esses taxa, podem contribuir substancialmente para o entendimento da distribuição florestal – e de biomas associados – ao longo das oscilações climáticas do Quaternário. Esses resultados reforçam a importância da preservação de refúgios florestais que incluam, entre outras espécies interessantes, espécies epífitas como cactáceas da tribo Rhipsalideae DC. Quaternary period is well-known for its great climatic pulsations, that intercalates between long glacial regimes and shorter warmer periods which lead to significant changes in the paleovegetation occurred as a consequence of these climatic oscillations. Strong evidence that the diversity distribution patterns in the current Atlantic Forest can be largely explained by the climatic changes in this period. Nevertheless, there are many gaps and divergences in the literature regarding the occupancy patterns that these vegetations developed during these environmental changes. Using of an epiphytic cactus species (Lepismium cruciforme) - widely distributed in the Atlantic Forest - as a model for phylogeographic studies, performed intraspecific analyzes in eight populations along forest remnants in conservation units and urban forest spots to answer the following questions: a) Can multiple lineages of L. cruciforme among different populations in the seasonal semideciduous forest, be identified? b) If detected, would these different lineages be associated with some sort of geographical isolation? c) Have populations of L. cruciforme suffered from historical demographic fluctuations? Is there a growing genetic diversity in the continental/oceanic longitudinal gradient? d) Through the nuclear molecular marker (ITS), 71 sequences of 638 loci and identified nine different haplotypes. Highly diversified lineages were identified in Pontal do Paranapanema and Campos Gerais regions. In the first, populations appear to have been influenced by the existence of a river barrier and in the latter, the confinement to forests refuges surrounded by grassfields vegetation, might be the probable reason for the observed genetic diversity. These results indicate that populations of L. cruciforme suffered a demographic bottleneck followed by a recent population expansion, as expected for forest species. No signs of a genetic diversity gradient were observed in the continental/oceanic longitudinal gradient. Instead, higher genetic diversity values in lineages located in extreme regions of the continental/oceanic distribution, in contrast to lower diversity in the central regions of the sampled distribution. The use of this epiphyte species in phylogeographic studies showed to be promising in understanding the Atlantic Forest vegetation dynamics, especially the seasonal semideciduous forests. Future works involving other epiphytic species, as well as ecological studies involving these taxa, can contribute substantially in the comprehension of the forest distribution - and associated biomes - throughout the climatic oscillations of the Quaternary. O estudo da glaciação plistocénica no Noroeste de Portugal tem interessado a comunidade científica desde finais do século XIX. Das várias serras minhotas, apenas a do Gerês e da Peneda são consensualmente consideradas como áreas montanhosas afetadas pelas glaciações quaternárias, embora outras montanhas, apesar de mais baixas, pareçam evidenciar idênticos efeitos das glaciações. Apresenta-se neste trabalho uma síntese dos conhecimentos atuais e as perspetivas de investigação dos vestígios glaciares nas montanhas do NW de Portugal., The study of Pleistocene glaciation in the Northwest of Portugal has interested the scientific community since the late nineteenth century. From all mountains of Minho, only the Peneda and Gerês are consensually regarded as mountain areas affected by Quaternary glaciations, although other mountainous areas appear to show identical effects of glaciation. Thus, this paper presents a synthesis of current knowledge and research perspectives of the remains of the glaciers in the mountains NW Portugal.
