Search

We present a design for a wide-field spectroscopic telescope. The only large powered mirror is spherical, the resulting spherical aberration is corrected for each target separately, giving exceptional image quality. The telescope is a transit design, but still allows all-sky coverage. Three simultaneous modes are proposed: (a) natural seeing multi-object spectroscopy with 12m aperture over 3dg FoV with ~25,000 targets; (b) multi-object AO with 12m aperture over 3dg FoV with ~100 AO-corrected Integral Field Units each with 4 arcsec FoV; (c) ground layer AO-corrected integral field spectroscopy with 15m aperture and 13 arcmin FoV. Such a telescope would be uniquely powerful for large-area follow-up of imaging surveys; in each mode, the AOmega and survey speed exceed all existing facilities combined. BlueMUSE is a blue-optimised, medium spectral resolution, panoramic integral field spectrograph under development for the Very Large Telescope (VLT). With an optimised transmission down to 350 nm, spectral resolution of R$\sim$3500 on average across the wavelength range, and a large FoV (1 arcmin$^2$), BlueMUSE will open up a new range of galactic and extragalactic science cases facilitated by its specific capabilities. The BlueMUSE consortium includes 9 institutes located in 7 countries and is led by the Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL). The BlueMUSE project development is currently in Phase A, with an expected first light at the VLT in 2031. We introduce here the Top Level Requirements (TLRs) derived from the main science cases, and then present an overview of the BlueMUSE system and its subsystems fulfilling these TLRs. While neural network approaches have made significant strides in resolving classical signal processing problems, it is often the case that hybrid approaches that draw insight from both signal processing and neural networks produce more complete solutions. In this paper, we present a hybrid classical digital signal processing/deep neural network (DSP/DNN) approach to source separation (SS) highlighting the theoretical link between variational autoencoder and classical approaches to SS. We propose a system that transforms the single channel under-determined SS task to an equivalent multichannel over-determined SS problem in a properly designed latent space. The separation task in the latent space is treated as finding a variational block-wise disentangled representation of the mixture. We show empirically, that the design choices and the variational formulation of the task at hand motivated by the classical signal processing theoretical results lead to robustness to unseen out-of-distribution data and reduction of the overfitting risk. To address the resulting permutation issue we explicitly incorporate a novel differentiable permutation loss function and augment the model with a memory mechanism to keep track of the statistics of the individual sources.

Slow rotator galaxies are distinct amongst galaxy populations, with simulations suggesting that a mix of minor and major mergers are responsible for their formation. A promising path to resolve outstanding questions on the type of merger responsible, is by investigating deep imaging of massive galaxies for signs of potential merger remnants. We utilise deep imaging from the Subaru-Hyper Suprime Cam Wide data to search for tidal features in massive ($\log_{10}(M_*/M_{\odot}) > 10$) early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We perform a visual check for tidal features on images where the galaxy has been subtracted using a Multi-Gauss Expansion (MGE) model. We find that $31\pm 2$ percent of our sample show tidal features. When comparing galaxies with and without features, we find that the distributions in stellar mass, light-weighted mean stellar population age and H$\alpha$ equivalent width are significantly different, whereas spin ($\lambda_{R_e}$), ellipticity and bulge to total ratio have similar distributions. When splitting our sample in age, we find that galaxies below the median age (10.8 Gyr) show a correlation between the presence of shells and lower $\lambda_{R_e}$, as expected from simulations. We also find these younger galaxies which are classified as having "strong" shells have lower $\lambda_{R_e}$. However, simulations suggest that merger features become undetectable within $\sim 2-4$ Gyr post-merger. This implies that the relationship between tidal features and merger history disappears for galaxies with older stellar ages, i.e. those that are more likely to have merged long ago., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 22 pages, 14 figures

We use the SAMI galaxy survey to study the the kinematic morphology-density relation: the observation that the fraction of slow rotator galaxies increases towards dense environments. We build a logistic regression model to quantitatively study the dependence of kinematic morphology (whether a galaxy is a fast rotator or slow rotator) on a wide range of parameters, without resorting to binning the data. Our model uses a combination of stellar mass, star-formation rate (SFR), $r$-band half-light radius and a binary variable based on whether the galaxy's observed ellipticity ($\epsilon$) is less than 0.4. We show that, at fixed mass, size, SFR and $\epsilon$, a galaxy's local environmental surface density ($\log_{10}(\Sigma_5/\mathrm{Mpc}^{-2})$) gives no further information about whether a galaxy is a slow rotator, i.e. the observed kinematic-morphology density relation can be entirely explained by the well-known correlations between environment and other quantities. We show how our model can be applied to different galaxy surveys to predict the fraction of slow rotators which would be observed and discuss its implications for the formation pathways of slow rotators., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. We introduce a real-time, multichannel speech enhancement algorithm which maintains the spatial cues of stereo recordings including two speech sources. Recognizing that each source has unique spatial information, our method utilizes a dual-path structure, ensuring the spatial cues remain unaffected during enhancement by applying source-specific common-band gain. This method also seamlessly integrates pretrained monaural speech enhancement, eliminating the need for retraining on stereo inputs. Source separation from stereo mixtures is achieved via spatial beamforming, with the steering vector for each source being adaptively updated using post-enhancement output signal. This ensures accurate tracking of the spatial information. The final stereo output is derived by merging the spatial images of the enhanced sources, with its efficacy not heavily reliant on the separation performance of the beamforming. The algorithm runs in real-time on 10-ms frames with a 40 ms of look-ahead. Improving the interpretability of deep neural networks has recently gained increased attention, especially when the power of deep learning is leveraged to solve problems in physics. Interpretability helps us understand a model's ability to generalize and reveal its limitations. In this paper, we introduce a causal interpretable deep structure for modeling dynamic systems. Our proposed model makes use of the harmonic analysis by modeling the system in a time-frequency domain while maintaining high temporal and spectral resolution. Moreover, the model is built in an order recursive manner which allows for fast, robust, and exact second order optimization without the need for an explicit Hessian calculation. To circumvent the resulting high dimensionality of the building blocks of our system, a neural network is designed to identify the frequency interdependencies. The proposed model is illustrated and validated on nonlinear system identification problems as required for audio signal processing tasks. Crowd-sourced experimentation contrasting the performance of the proposed approach to other state-of-the-art solutions on an acoustic echo cancellation scenario confirms the effectiveness of our method for real-life applications.

Speech codec enhancement methods are designed to remove distortions added by speech codecs. While classical methods are very low in complexity and add zero delay, their effectiveness is rather limited. Compared to that, DNN-based methods deliver higher quality but they are typically high in complexity and/or require delay. The recently proposed Linear Adaptive Coding Enhancer (LACE) addresses this problem by combining DNNs with classical long-term/short-term postfiltering resulting in a causal low-complexity model. A short-coming of the LACE model is, however, that quality quickly saturates when the model size is scaled up. To mitigate this problem, we propose a novel adatpive temporal shaping module that adds high temporal resolution to the LACE model resulting in the Non-Linear Adaptive Coding Enhancer (NoLACE). We adapt NoLACE to enhance the Opus codec and show that NoLACE significantly outperforms both the Opus baseline and an enlarged LACE model at 6, 9 and 12 kb/s. In this study, we present an approach to train a single speech enhancement network that can perform both personalized and non-personalized speech enhancement. This is achieved by incorporating a frame-wise conditioning input that specifies the type of enhancement output. To improve the quality of the enhanced output and mitigate oversuppression, we experiment with re-weighting frames by the presence or absence of speech activity and applying augmentations to speaker embeddings. By training under a multi-task learning setting, we empirically show that the proposed unified model obtains promising results on both personalized and non-personalized speech enhancement benchmarks and reaches similar performance to models that are trained specialized for either task. The strong performance of the proposed method demonstrates that the unified model is a more economical alternative compared to keeping separate task-specific models during inference., Comment: Accepted by ICASSP 2023

We study environmental quenching using the spatial distribution of current star-formation and stellar population ages with the full SAMI Galaxy Survey. By using a star-formation concentration index [C-index, defined as log10(r_{50,Halpha}/r_{50,cont})], we separate our sample into regular galaxies (C-index>-0.2) and galaxies with centrally concentrated star-formation (SF-concentrated; C-index<-0.2). Concentrated star-formation is a potential indicator of galaxies currently undergoing `outside-in' quenching. Our environments cover ungrouped galaxies, low-mass groups (M_200<10^12.5 M_sun), high-mass groups (M_200 in the range 10^{12.5-14} M_sun) and clusters (M_200>10^14 M_sun). We find the fraction of SF-concentrated galaxies increases as halo mass increases with 9\pm2 per cent, 8\pm3 per cent, 19\pm4 per cent and 29\pm4 per cent for ungrouped galaxies, low-mass groups, high-mass groups and clusters, respectively. We interpret these results as evidence for `outside-in' quenching in groups and clusters. To investigate the quenching time-scale in SF-concentrated galaxies, we calculate light-weighted age (Age_L) and mass-weighted age (Age_M) using full spectral fitting, as well as the Dn4000 and Hdelta_A indices. We assume that the average galaxy age radial profile before entering a group or cluster is similar to ungrouped regular galaxies. At large radius (1-2 R_e), SF-concentrated galaxies in high-mass groups have older ages than ungrouped regular galaxies with an age difference of 1.83\pm0.38 Gyr for Age_L and 1.34\pm0.56 Gyr for Age_M. This suggests that while `outside-in' quenching can be effective in groups, the process will not quickly quench the entire galaxy. In contrast, the ages at 1-2 R_e of cluster SF-concentrated galaxies and ungrouped regular galaxies are consistent (0.19\pm0.21 Gyr for Age_L, 0.40\pm0.61 Gyr for Age_M), suggesting the quenching process must be rapid., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures

Using data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey, we investigate the correlation between the projected stellar kinematic spin vector of 1397 SAMI galaxies and the line-of-sight motion of their neighbouring galaxies. We calculate the luminosity-weighted mean velocity difference between SAMI galaxies and their neighbours in the direction perpendicular to the SAMI galaxies angular momentum axes. The luminosity-weighted mean velocity offsets between SAMI and neighbours, which indicates the signal of coherence between the rotation of the SAMI galaxies and the motion of neighbours, is 9.0 $\pm$ 5.4 km s$^{-1}$ (1.7 $\sigma$) for neighbours within 1 Mpc. In a large-scale analysis, we find that the average velocity offsets increase for neighbours out to 2 Mpc. However, the velocities are consistent with zero or negative for neighbours outside 3 Mpc. The negative signals for neighbours at distance around 10 Mpc are also significant at $\sim 2$ $\sigma$ level, which indicate that the positive signals within 2 Mpc might come from the variance of large-scale structure. We also calculate average velocities of different subsamples, including galaxies in different regions of the sky, galaxies with different stellar masses, galaxy type, $\lambda_{Re}$ and inclination. Although low-mass, high-mass, early-type and low-spin galaxies subsamples show 2 - 3 $\sigma$ signal of coherence for the neighbours within 2 Mpc, the results for different inclination subsamples and large-scale results suggest that the $\sim 2 \sigma$ signals might result from coincidental scatter or variance of large-scale structure. Overall, the modest evidence of coherence signals for neighbouring galaxies within 2 Mpc needs to be confirmed by larger samples of observations and simulation studies., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We explore a sample of 1492 galaxies with measurements of the mean stellar population properties and the spin parameter proxy, $\lambda_{R_{\rm{e}}}$, drawn from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We fit a global $\left[\alpha/\rm{Fe}\right]$-$\sigma$ relation, finding that $\left[\alpha/\rm{Fe}\right]=(0.395\pm0.010)\rm{log}_{10}\left(\sigma\right)-(0.627\pm0.002)$. We observe an anti-correlation between the residuals $\Delta\left[\alpha/\rm{Fe}\right]$ and the inclination-corrected $\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}$, which can be expressed as $\Delta\left[\alpha/\rm{Fe}\right]=(-0.057\pm0.008)\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}+(0.020\pm0.003)$. The anti-correlation appears to be driven by star-forming galaxies, with a gradient of $\Delta\left[\alpha/\rm{Fe}\right]\sim(-0.121\pm0.015)\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}$, although a weak relationship persists for the subsample of galaxies for which star formation has been quenched. We take this to be confirmation that disk-dominated galaxies have an extended duration of star formation. At a reference velocity dispersion of 200 km s$^{-1}$, we estimate an increase in half-mass formation time from $\sim$0.5 Gyr to $\sim$1.2 Gyr from low- to high-$\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}$ galaxies. Slow rotators do not appear to fit these trends. Their residual $\alpha$-enhancement is indistinguishable from other galaxies with $\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}\lessapprox0.4$, despite being both larger and more massive. This result shows that galaxies with $\lambda_{\,R_{\rm{e}}}^{\rm{\,eo}}\lessapprox0.4$ experience a similar range of star formation histories, despite their different physical structure and angular momentum., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Singing voice separation aims to separate music into vocals and accompaniment components. One of the major constraints for the task is the limited amount of training data with separated vocals. Data augmentation techniques such as random source mixing have been shown to make better use of existing data and mildly improve model performance. We propose a novel data augmentation technique, chromagram-based pitch-aware remixing, where music segments with high pitch alignment are mixed. By performing controlled experiments in both supervised and semi-supervised settings, we demonstrate that training models with pitch-aware remixing significantly improves the test signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR), Comment: To appear at ICASSP 2022, 5 pages, 1 figure

We investigate the change in mean stellar population age and metallicity ([Z/H]) scaling relations for quiescent galaxies from intermediate redshift ($0.60\leq z\leq0.76$) using the LEGA-C Survey, to low redshift ($0.014\leq z\leq0.10$) using the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We find that, similarly to their low-redshift counterparts, the stellar metallicity of quiescent galaxies at $0.60\leq z\leq 0.76$ closely correlates with $M_*/R_\mathrm{e}$ (a proxy for the gravitational potential or escape velocity), in that galaxies with deeper potential wells are more metal-rich. This supports the hypothesis that the relation arises due to the gravitational potential regulating the retention of metals, by determining the escape velocity required by metal-rich stellar and supernova ejecta to escape the system and avoid being recycled into later stellar generations. On the other hand, we find no correlation between stellar age and $M_*/R_\mathrm{e}^2$ (stellar mass surface density $\Sigma$) in the LEGA-C sample, despite this being a strong relation at low redshift. We consider this change in the age--$\Sigma$ relation in the context of the redshift evolution of the star-forming and quiescent populations in the mass--size plane, and find our results can be explained as a consequence of galaxies forming more compactly at higher redshifts, and remaining compact throughout their evolution. Furthermore, galaxies appear to quench at a characteristic surface density that decreases with decreasing redshift. The $z\sim 0$ age--$\Sigma$ relation is therefore a result of building up the quiescent and star-forming populations with galaxies that formed at a range of redshifts and so a range of surface densities., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We present a new set of index-based measurements of [$\alpha$/Fe] for a sample of 2093 galaxies in the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Following earlier work, we fit a global relation between [$\alpha$/Fe] and the galaxy velocity dispersion $\sigma$ for red sequence galaxies, [$\alpha$/Fe]=(0.378$\pm$0.009)log($\sigma$/100)+(0.155$\pm$0.003). We observe a correlation between the residuals and the local environmental surface density, whereas no such relation exists for blue cloud galaxies. In the full sample, we find that elliptical galaxies in high-density environments are $\alpha$-enhanced by up to 0.057$\pm$0.014 dex at velocity dispersions $\sigma$<100 km/s, compared with those in low-density environments. This $\alpha$-enhancement is morphology-dependent, with the offset decreasing along the Hubble sequence towards spirals, which have an offset of 0.019$\pm$0.014 dex. At low velocity dispersion and controlling for morphology, we estimate that star formation in high-density environments is truncated $\sim1$ Gyr earlier than in low-density environments. For elliptical galaxies only, we find support for a parabolic relationship between [$\alpha$/Fe] and $\sigma$, with an environmental $\alpha$-enhancement of at least 0.03 dex. This suggests strong contributions from both environment and mass-based quenching mechanisms. We study the Fundamental Plane (FP) for a volume- and luminosity-limited sample of 560 early-type galaxies from the SAMI survey. Using r-band sizes and luminosities from new Multi-Gaussian Expansion (MGE) photometric measurements, and treating luminosity as the dependent variable, the FP has coefficients a=1.294$\pm$0.039, b= 0.912$\pm$0.025, and zero-point c= 7.067$\pm$0.078. We leverage the high signal-to-noise of SAMI integral field spectroscopy, to determine how structural and stellar-population observables affect the scatter about the FP. The FP residuals correlate most strongly (8$\sigma$ significance) with luminosity-weighted simple-stellar-population (SSP) age. In contrast, the structural observables surface mass density, rotation-to-dispersion ratio, S\'ersic index and projected shape all show little or no significant correlation. We connect the FP residuals to the empirical relation between age (or stellar mass-to-light ratio $\Upsilon_\star$) and surface mass density, the best predictor of SSP age amongst parameters based on FP observables. We show that the FP residuals (anti-)correlate with the residuals of the relation between surface density and $\Upsilon_\star$. This correlation implies that part of the FP scatter is due to the broad age and $\Upsilon_\star$ distribution at any given surface mass density. Using virial mass and $\Upsilon_\star$ we construct a simulated FP and compare it to the observed FP. We find that, while the empirical relations between observed stellar population relations and FP observables are responsible for most (75%) of the FP scatter, on their own they do not explain the observed tilt of the FP away from the virial plane., Comment: 36 pages, 23 figures

We investigate the stellar populations of passive spiral galaxies as a function of mass and environment, using integral field spectroscopy data from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph Galaxy Survey. Our sample consists of $52$ cluster passive spirals and $18$ group/field passive spirals, as well as a set of S0s used as a control sample. The age and [Z/H] estimated by measuring Lick absorption line strength indices both at the center and within $1R_{\rm e}$ do not show a significant difference between the cluster and the field/group passive spirals. However, the field/group passive spirals with log(M$_\star$/M$_\odot)\gtrsim10.5$ show decreasing [$\alpha$/Fe] along with stellar mass, which is $\sim0.1$ dex smaller than that of the cluster passive spirals. We also compare the stellar populations of passive spirals with S0s. In the clusters, we find that passive spirals show slightly younger age and lower [$\alpha$/Fe] than the S0s over the whole mass range. In the field/group, stellar populations show a similar trend between passive spirals and S0s. In particular, [$\alpha$/Fe] of the field/group S0s tend to be flattening with increasing mass above log(M$_\star$/M$_\odot)\gtrsim10.5$, similar to the field/group passive spirals. We relate the age and [$\alpha$/Fe] of passive spirals to their mean infall time in phase-space; we find a positive correlation, in agreement with the prediction of numerical simulations. We discuss the environmental processes that can explain the observed trends. The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey has morphologically identified a class of "Little Blue Spheroid" (LBS) galaxies whose relationship to other classes of galaxies we now examine in detail. Considering a sample of 868 LBSs, we find that such galaxies display similar but not identical colours, specific star formation rates, stellar population ages, mass-to-light ratios, and metallicities to Sd-Irr galaxies. We also find that LBSs typically occupy environments of even lower density than those of Sd-Irr galaxies, where ~65% of LBS galaxies live in isolation. Using deep, high-resolution imaging from VST KiDS and the new Bayesian, two-dimensional galaxy profile modeling code PROFIT, we further examine the detailed structure of LBSs and find that their S\'ersic indices, sizes, and axial ratios are compatible with those of low-mass elliptical galaxies. We then examine SAMI Galaxy survey integral field emission line kinematics for a subset of 62 LBSs and find that the majority (42) of these galaxies display ordered rotation with the remainder displaying disturbed/non-ordered dynamics. Finally, we consider potential evolutionary scenarios for a population with this unusual combination of properties, concluding that LBSs are likely formed by a mixture of merger and accretion processes still recently active in low-redshift dwarf populations. We use data from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field spectroscopy (SAMI) Galaxy Survey to study the dynamical scaling relation between galaxy stellar mass $M_*$ and the general kinematic parameter $S_K = \sqrt{K V_{rot}^2 + \sigma^2}$ that combines rotation velocity $V_{rot}$ and velocity dispersion $\sigma$. We show that the $\log M_* - \log S_K$ relation: (1)~is linear above limits set by properties of the samples and observations; (2)~has slightly different slope when derived from stellar or gas kinematic measurements; (3)~applies to both early-type and late-type galaxies and has smaller scatter than either the Tully-Fisher relation ($\log M_* - \log V_{rot}$) for late types or the Faber-Jackson relation ($\log M_* - \log\sigma$) for early types; and (4)~has scatter that is only weakly sensitive to the value of $K$, with minimum scatter for $K$ in the range 0.4 and 0.7. We compare $S_K$ to the aperture second moment (the `aperture velocity dispersion') measured from the integrated spectrum within a 3-arcsecond radius aperture ($\sigma_{3^{\prime\prime}}$). We find that while $S_{K}$ and $\sigma_{3^{\prime\prime}}$ are in general tightly correlated, the $\log M_* - \log S_K$ relation has less scatter than the $\log M_* - \log \sigma_{3^{\prime\prime}}$ relation., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Accepted 2019 May 22. We present a novel Bayesian method, referred to as Blobby3D, to infer gas kinematics that mitigates the effects of beam smearing for observations using Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS). The method is robust for regularly rotating galaxies despite substructure in the gas distribution. Modelling the gas substructure within the disk is achieved by using a hierarchical Gaussian mixture model. To account for beam smearing effects, we construct a modelled cube that is then convolved per wavelength slice by the seeing, before calculating the likelihood function. We show that our method can model complex gas substructure including clumps and spiral arms. We also show that kinematic asymmetries can be observed after beam smearing for regularly rotating galaxies with asymmetries only introduced in the spatial distribution of the gas. We present findings for our method applied to a sample of 20 star-forming galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We estimate the global H$\alpha$ gas velocity dispersion for our sample to be in the range $\bar{\sigma}_v \sim $[7, 30] km s$^{-1}$. The relative difference between our approach and estimates using the single Gaussian component fits per spaxel is $\Delta \bar{\sigma}_v / \bar{\sigma}_v = - 0.29 \pm 0.18$ for the H$\alpha$ flux-weighted mean velocity dispersion., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, accepted for MNRAS

Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations are rich tools to understand the build-up of stellar mass and angular momentum in galaxies, but require some level of calibration to observations. We compare predictions at $z\sim0$ from the Eagle, Hydrangea, Horizon-AGN, and Magneticum simulations with integral field spectroscopic (IFS) data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey, ATLAS3D, CALIFA and MASSIVE surveys. The main goal of this work is to simultaneously compare structural, dynamical, and stellar population measurements in order to identify key areas of success and tension. We have taken great care to ensure that our simulated measurement methods match the observational methods as closely as possible. We find that the Eagle and Hydrangea simulations reproduce many galaxy relations but with some offsets at high stellar masses. There are moderate mismatches in $R_e$ (+), $\epsilon$ (-), $\sigma_e$ (-), and mean stellar age (+), where a plus sign indicates that quantities are too high on average, and minus sign too low. The Horizon-AGN simulations qualitatively reproduce several galaxy relations, but there are a number of properties where we find a quantitative offset to observations. Massive galaxies are better matched to observations than galaxies at low and intermediate masses. Overall, we find mismatches in $R_e$ (+), $\epsilon$ (-), $\sigma_e$ (-) and $(V/\sigma)_e$ (-). Magneticum matches observations well: this is the only simulation where we find ellipticities typical for disk galaxies, but there are moderate differences in $\sigma_e$ (-), $(V/\sigma)_e$ (-) and mean stellar age (+). Our comparison between simulations and observational data has highlighted several areas for improvement, such as the need for improved modelling resulting in a better vertical disk structure, yet our results demonstrate the vast improvement of cosmological simulations in recent years., Comment: 25 pages and 14 figures. We present the second major release of data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Data Release Two includes data for 1559 galaxies, about 50% of the full survey. Galaxies included have a redshift range 0.004 < z < 0.113 and a large stellar mass range 7.5 < log (M_star/M_sun) < 11.6. The core data for each galaxy consist of two primary spectral cubes covering the blue and red optical wavelength ranges. For each primary cube we also provide three spatially binned spectral cubes and a set of standardised aperture spectra. For each core data product we provide a set of value-added data products. This includes all emission line value-added products from Data Release One, expanded to the larger sample. In addition we include stellar kinematic and stellar population value-added products derived from absorption line measurements. The data are provided online through Australian Astronomical Optics' Data Central. We illustrate the potential of this release by presenting the distribution of ~350,000 stellar velocity dispersion measurements from individual spaxels as a function of R/R_e, divided in four galaxy mass bins. In the highest stellar mass bin (log (M_star/M_sun)>11), the velocity dispersion strongly increases towards the centre, whereas below log (M_star/M_sun)<10 we find no evidence for a clear increase in the central velocity dispersion. This suggests a transition mass around log (M_star/M_sun) ~10 for galaxies with or without a dispersion-dominated bulge., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Starbugs are miniature piezoelectric walking robots that can be operated in parallel to position many payloads like optical fibers across a telescopes focal plane. They consist of two concentric piezoelectric ceramic tubes that walk with micron step size. In addition to individual optical fibers, Starbugs have moved a payload of 0.75kg at several millimeters per second. The Australian Astronomical Observatory previously developed prototype devices and tested them in the laboratory. Now we are optimizing the Starbug design for production and deployment in the TAIPAN instrument, which will be capable of configuring 300 optical fibers over a six degree field-of-view on the UK Schmidt Telescope within a few minutes. The TAIPAN instrument will demonstrate the technology and capability for MANIFEST (Many Instrument Fiber-System) proposed for the Giant Magellan Telescope. Design is addressing: connector density and voltage limitations, mechanical reliability and construction repeatability, field plate residues and scratching, metrology stability, and facilitation of improved motion in all aspects of the design for later evaluation. Stellar population and stellar kinematic studies provide unique but complementary insights into how galaxies build-up their stellar mass and angular momentum. A galaxy's mean stellar age reveals when stars were formed, but provides little constraint on how the galaxy's mass was assembled. Resolved stellar dynamics trace the change in angular momentum and orbital distribution of stars due to mergers, but major mergers tend to obscure the effect of earlier interactions. With the rise of large multi-object integral field spectroscopic (IFS) surveys, such as SAMI and MaNGA, and single-object IFS surveys (e.g., ATLAS$^{\rm{3D}}$, CALIFA, MASSIVE), it is now feasible to connect a galaxy's star formation and merger history on the same resolved physical scales, over a large range in galaxy mass, and across the full range of optical morphology and environment. Using the SAMI Galaxy Survey, here we present the first study of spatially-resolved stellar kinematics and global stellar populations in a large IFS galaxy survey. We find a strong correlation of stellar population age with location in the ($V / \sigma$, $\epsilon_{\rm{e}}$) diagram that links the ratio of ordered rotation to random motions in a galaxy to its observed ellipticity. For the large majority of galaxies that are oblate rotating spheroids, we find that characteristic stellar age follows the intrinsic ellipticity of galaxies remarkably well. The well-established correlations between the mass of a galaxy and the properties of its stars are considered evidence for mass driving the evolution of the stellar population. However, for early-type galaxies (ETGs), we find that $g-i$ color and stellar metallicity [Z/H] correlate more strongly with gravitational potential $\Phi$ than with mass $M$, whereas stellar population age correlates best with surface density $\Sigma$. Specifically, for our sample of 625 ETGs with integral-field spectroscopy from the SAMI Galaxy Survey, compared to correlations with mass, the color--$\Phi$, [Z/H]--$\Phi$, and age--$\Sigma$ relations show both smaller scatter and less residual trend with galaxy size. For the star formation duration proxy [$\alpha$/Fe], we find comparable results for trends with $\Phi$ and $\Sigma$, with both being significantly stronger than the [$\alpha$/Fe]-$M$ relation. In determining the strength of a trend, we analyze both the overall scatter, and the observational uncertainty on the parameters, in order to compare the intrinsic scatter in each correlation. These results lead us to the following inferences and interpretations: (1) the color--$\Phi$ diagram is a more precise tool for determining the developmental stage of the stellar population than the conventional color--mass diagram; and (2) gravitational potential is the primary regulator of global stellar metallicity, via its relation to the gas escape velocity. Furthermore, we propose the following two mechanisms for the age and [$\alpha$/Fe] relations with $\Sigma$: (a) the age--$\Sigma$ and [$\alpha$/Fe]--$\Sigma$ correlations arise as results of compactness driven quenching mechanisms; and/or (b) as fossil records of the $\Sigma_{SFR}\propto\Sigma_{gas}$ relation in their disk-dominated progenitors., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table Accepted to ApJ

Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors using wound fibre bundles are desired for multi-object adaptive optical systems to provide large multiplex positioned by Starbugs. The use of the large-sized wound fibre bundle provides the exibility to use more sub-apertures wavefront sensor for ELTs. These compact wavefront sensors take advantage of large focal surfaces such as the Giant Magellan Telescope. The focus of this paper is to study the wound fibre image bundle structure defects effect on the centroid measurement accuracy of a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. We use the first moment centroid method to estimate the centroid of a focused Gaussian beam sampled by a simulated bundle. Spot estimation accuracy with wound fibre image bundle and its structure impact on wavefront measurement accuracy statistics are addressed. Our results show that when the measurement signal to noise ratio is high, the centroid measurement accuracy is dominated by the wound fibre image bundle structure, e.g. tile angle and gap spacing. For the measurement with low signal to noise ratio, its accuracy is influenced by the read noise of the detector instead of the wound fibre image bundle structure defects. We demonstrate this both with simulation and experimentally. We present the ~800 star formation rate maps for the SAMI Galaxy Survey based on H{\alpha} emission maps, corrected for dust attenuation via the Balmer decrement, that are included in the SAMI Public Data Release 1. We mask out spaxels contaminated by non-stellar emission using the [O III]/H{\beta}, [N II]/H{\alpha}, [S II]/H{\alpha}, and [O I]/H{\alpha} line ratios. Using these maps, we examine the global and resolved star-forming main sequences of SAMI galaxies as a function of morphology, environmental density, and stellar mass. Galaxies further below the star-forming main sequence are more likely to have flatter star formation profiles. Early-type galaxies split into two populations with similar stellar masses and central stellar mass surface densities. The main sequence population has centrally-concentrated star formation similar to late-type galaxies, while galaxies >3{\sigma} below the main sequence show significantly reduced star formation most strikingly in the nuclear regions. The split populations support a two-step quenching mechanism, wherein halo mass first cuts off the gas supply and remaining gas continues to form stars until the local stellar mass surface density can stabilize the reduced remaining fuel against further star formation. Across all morphologies, galaxies in denser environments show a decreased specific star formation rate from the outside in, supporting an environmental cause for quenching, such as ram-pressure stripping or galaxy interactions., Comment: accepted to MNRAS

We present an analysis of the global stellar populations of galaxies in the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Our sample consists of 1319 galaxies spanning four orders of magnitude in stellar mass and includes all morphologies and environments. We derive luminosity-weighted, single stellar population equivalent stellar ages, metallicities and alpha enhancements from spectra integrated within one effective radius apertures. Variations in galaxy size explain the majority of the scatter in the age--mass and metallicity--mass relations. Stellar populations vary systematically in the plane of galaxy size and stellar mass, such that galaxies with high stellar surface mass density are older, more metal-rich and alpha-enhanced than less dense galaxies. Galaxies with high surface mass densities have a very narrow range of metallicities, however, at fixed mass, the spread in metallicity increases substantially with increasing galaxy size (decreasing density). We identify residual correlations with morphology and environment. At fixed mass and size, galaxies with late-type morphologies, small bulges and low Sersic n are younger than early-type, high n, high bulge-to-total galaxies. Age and metallicity both show small residual correlations with environment; at fixed mass and size, galaxies in denser environments or more massive halos are older and somewhat more metal rich than those in less dense environments. We present the first major release of data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. This data release focuses on the emission-line physics of galaxies. Data Release One includes data for 772 galaxies, about 20% of the full survey. Galaxies included have the redshift range 0.004 < z < 0.092, a large mass range (7.6 < log(Mstellar/M$_\odot$) < 11.6), and star-formation rates of 10^-4 to 10^1\ M$_\odot$/yr. For each galaxy, we include two spectral cubes and a set of spatially resolved 2D maps: single- and multi-component emission-line fits (with dust extinction corrections for strong lines), local dust extinction and star-formation rate. Calibration of the fibre throughputs, fluxes and differential-atmospheric-refraction has been improved over the Early Data Release. The data have average spatial resolution of 2.16 arcsec (FWHM) over the 15~arcsec diameter field of view and spectral (kinematic) resolution R=4263 (sigma=30km/s) around Halpha. The relative flux calibration is better than 5\% and absolute flux calibration better than $\pm0.22$~mag, with the latter estimate limited by galaxy photometry. The fraction of galaxies supported by internal rotation compared to galaxies stabilized by internal pressure provides a strong constraint on galaxy formation models. In integral field spectroscopy surveys, this fraction is biased because survey instruments typically only trace the inner parts of the most massive galaxies. We present aperture corrections for the two most widely used stellar kinematic quantities $V/\sigma$ and $\lambda_{R}$. Our demonstration involves integral field data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey and the ATLAS$^{\rm{3D}}$ Survey. We find a tight relation for both $V/\sigma$ and $\lambda_{R}$ when measured in different apertures that can be used as a linear transformation as a function of radius, i.e., a first-order aperture correction. We find that $V/\sigma$ and $\lambda_{R}$ radial growth curves are well approximated by second order polynomials. By only fitting the inner profile (0.5$R_{\rm{e}}$), we successfully recover the profile out to one $R_{\rm{e}}$ if a constraint between the linear and quadratic parameter in the fit is applied. However, the aperture corrections for $V/\sigma$ and $\lambda_{R}$ derived by extrapolating the profiles perform as well as applying a first-order correction. With our aperture-corrected $\lambda_{R}$ measurements, we find that the fraction of slow rotating galaxies increases with stellar mass. For galaxies with $\log M_{*}/M_{\odot}>$ 11, the fraction of slow rotators is $35.9\pm4.3$ percent, but is underestimated if galaxies without coverage beyond one $R_{\rm{e}}$ are not included in the sample ($24.2\pm5.3$ percent). With measurements out to the largest aperture radius the slow rotator fraction is similar as compared to using aperture corrected values ($38.3\pm4.4$ percent). We investigate the energy sources of random turbulent motions of ionised gas from H$\alpha$ emission in eight local star-forming galaxies from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey. These galaxies satisfy strict pure star-forming selection criteria to avoid contamination from active galactic nuclei (AGN) or strong shocks/outflows. Using the relatively high spatial and spectral resolution of SAMI, we find that -- on sub-kpc scales our galaxies display a flat distribution of ionised gas velocity dispersion as a function of star formation rate (SFR) surface density. A major fraction of our SAMI galaxies shows higher velocity dispersion than predictions by feedback-driven models, especially at the low SFR surface density end. Our results suggest that additional sources beyond star formation feedback contribute to driving random motions of the interstellar medium (ISM) in star-forming galaxies. We speculate that gravity, galactic shear, and/or magnetorotational instability (MRI) may be additional driving sources of turbulence in these galaxies., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. We examine the kinematic morphology of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in eight galaxy clusters in the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey. The clusters cover a mass range of 14.2

Stars form in cold molecular clouds. However, molecular gas is difficult to observe because the most abundant molecule (H2) lacks a permanent dipole moment. Rotational transitions of CO are often used as a tracer of H2, but CO is much less abundant and the conversion from CO intensity to H2 mass is often highly uncertain. Here we present a new method for estimating the column density of cold molecular gas (Sigma_gas) using optical spectroscopy. We utilise the spatially resolved H-alpha maps of flux and velocity dispersion from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey. We derive maps of Sigma_gas by inverting the multi-freefall star formation relation, which connects the star formation rate surface density (Sigma_SFR) with Sigma_gas and the turbulent Mach number (Mach). Based on the measured range of Sigma_SFR = 0.005-1.5 M_sol/yr/kpc^2 and Mach = 18-130, we predict Sigma_gas = 7-200 M_sol/pc^2 in the star-forming regions of our sample of 260 SAMI galaxies. These values are close to previously measured Sigma_gas obtained directly with unresolved CO observations of similar galaxies at low redshift. We classify each galaxy in our sample as 'Star-forming' (219) or 'Composite/AGN/Shock' (41), and find that in Composite/AGN/Shock galaxies the average Sigma_SFR, Mach, and Sigma_gas are enhanced by factors of 2.0, 1.6, and 1.3, respectively, compared to Star-forming galaxies. Imaging bundles provide a convenient way to translate a spatially coherent image, yet conventional imaging bundles made from silica fibre optics typically remain expensive with large losses due to poor filling factors (~40%). We present the characterisation of a novel polymer imaging bundle made from poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) that is considerably cheaper and a better alternative to silica imaging bundles over short distances (~1 m; from the middle to the edge of a telescope's focal plane). The large increase in filling factor (92% for the polymer imaging bundle) outweighs the large increase in optical attenuation from using PMMA (1 dB/m) instead of silica (10^{-3} dB/m). We present and discuss current and possible future multi-object applications of the polymer imaging bundle in the context of astronomical instrumentation including: field acquisition, guiding, wavefront sensing, narrow-band imaging, aperture masking, and speckle imaging. Recent cosmological hydrodynamical simulations suggest that integral field spectroscopy can connect the high-order stellar kinematic moments h3 (~skewness) and h4 (~kurtosis) in galaxies to their cosmological assembly history. Here, we assess these results by measuring the stellar kinematics on a sample of 315 galaxies, without a morphological selection, using 2D integral field data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. A proxy for the spin parameter ($\lambda_{R_e}$) and ellipticity ($\epsilon_e$) are used to separate fast and slow rotators; there exists a good correspondence to regular and non-regular rotators, respectively, as also seen in earlier studies. We confirm that regular rotators show a strong h3 versus $V/\sigma$ anti-correlation, whereas quasi-regular and non-regular rotators show a more vertical relation in h3 and $V/\sigma$. Motivated by recent cosmological simulations, we develop an alternative approach to kinematically classify galaxies from their individual h3 versus $V/\sigma$ signatures. We identify five classes of high-order stellar kinematic signatures using Gaussian mixture models. Class 1 corresponds to slow rotators, whereas Classes 2-5 correspond to fast rotators. We find that galaxies with similar $\lambda_{R_e}-\epsilon_e$ values can show distinctly different h3-$V/\sigma$ signatures. Class 5 objects are previously unidentified fast rotators that show a weak h3 versus $V/\sigma$ anti-correlation. These objects are predicted to be disk-less galaxies formed by gas-poor mergers. From morphological examination, however, there is evidence for large stellar disks. Instead, Class 5 objects are more likely disturbed galaxies, have counter-rotating bulges, or bars in edge-on galaxies. Galaxy mergers are important events that can determine the fate of a galaxy by changing its morphology, star-formation activity and mass growth. Merger systems have commonly been identified from their disturbed morphologies, and we now can employ Integral Field Spectroscopy to detect and analyze the impact of mergers on stellar kinematics as well. We visually classified galaxy morphology using deep images ($\mu_{\rm r} = 28\,\rm mag\,\, arcsec^{-2}$) taken by the Blanco 4-m telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. In this paper we investigate 63 bright ($M_{\rm r}<-19.3$) spectroscopically-selected galaxies in Abell 119; of which 53 are early type and 20 galaxies show a disturbed morphology by visual inspection. A misalignment between the major axes in the photometric image and the kinematic map is conspicuous in morphologically-disturbed galaxies. Our sample is dominated by early-type galaxies, yet it shows a surprisingly tight Tully-Fisher relation except for the morphologically-disturbed galaxies which show large deviations. Three out of the eight slow rotators in our sample are morphology disturbed. The visually-selected morphologically-disturbed galaxies are generally more asymmetric, visually as well as kinematically. Our findings suggest that galaxy interactions, including mergers and perhaps fly-bys, play an important role in determining the orientation and magnitude of galaxy's angular momentum., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Australian Astronomical Observatory's TAIPAN instrument deploys 150 Starbug robots to position optical fibres to accuracies of 0.3 arcsec, on a 32 cm glass field plate on the focal plane of the 1.2 m UK-Schmidt telescope. This paper describes the software system developed to control and monitor the Starbugs, with particular emphasis on the automated path-finding algorithms, and the metrology software which keeps track of the position and motion of individual Starbugs as they independently move in a crowded field. The software employs a tiered approach to find a collision-free path for every Starbug, from its current position to its target location. This consists of three path-finding stages of increasing complexity and computational cost. For each Starbug a path is attempted using a simple method. We investigate a sample of 40 local, main-sequence, edge-on disc galaxies using integral field spectroscopy with the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey to understand the link between properties of the extraplanar gas and their host galaxies. The kinematics properties of the extraplanar gas, including velocity asymmetries and increased dispersion, are used to differentiate galaxies hosting large-scale galactic winds from those dominated by the extended diffuse ionized gas. We find rather that a spectrum of diffuse gas-dominated to wind dominated galaxies exist. The wind-dominated galaxies span a wide range of star formation rates ($-1 \lesssim \log({\rm SFR/M_{\odot} yr^{-1}}) \lesssim 0.5$) across the whole stellar mass range of the sample ($8.5 \lesssim \log({\rm M_{*}/M_{\odot}}) \lesssim 11$). The wind galaxies also span a wide range in SFR surface densities ($10^{-3} \textrm{--} 10^{-1.5}\rm~M_{\odot} ~yr^{-1}~kpc^{-2}$) that is much lower than the canonical threshold of $\rm0.1~M_{\odot} ~yr^{-1}~kpc^{-2}$. The wind galaxies on average have higher SFR surface densities and higher $\rm H\delta_A$ values than those without strong wind signatures. The enhanced $\rm H\delta_A$ indicates that bursts of star formation in the recent past are necessary for driving large-scale galactic winds. We demonstrate with Sloan Digital Sky Survey data that galaxies with high SFR surface density have experienced bursts of star formation in the recent past. Our results imply that the galactic winds revealed in our study are indeed driven by bursts of star formation, and thus probing star formation in the time domain is crucial for finding and understanding galactic winds., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures and 1 table. In the low redshift Universe (z<0.3), our view of galaxy evolution is primarily based on fibre optic spectroscopy surveys. Elaborate methods have been developed to address aperture effects when fixed aperture sizes only probe the inner regions for galaxies of ever decreasing redshift or increasing physical size. These aperture corrections rely on assumptions about the physical properties of galaxies. The adequacy of these aperture corrections can be tested with integral-field spectroscopic data. We use integral-field spectra drawn from 1212 galaxies observed as part of the SAMI Galaxy Survey to investigate the validity of two aperture correction methods that attempt to estimate a galaxy's total instantaneous star formation rate. We show that biases arise when assuming that instantaneous star formation is traced by broadband imaging, and when the aperture correction is built only from spectra of the nuclear region of galaxies. These biases may be significant depending on the selection criteria of a survey sample. The High Efficiency and Resolution Multi Element Spectrograph, HERMES, is a facility-class optical spectrograph for the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). It is designed primarily for Galactic Archaeology, the first major attempt to create a detailed understanding of galaxy formation and evolution by studying the history of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. The goal of the GALAH survey is to reconstruct the mass assembly history of the Milky Way through a detailed chemical abundance study of one million stars. The spectrograph is based at the AAT and is fed by the existing 2dF robotic fiber positioning system. The spectrograph uses volume phase holographic gratings to achieve a spectral resolving power of 28,000 in standard mode and also provides a high-resolution mode ranging between 40,000 and 50,000 using a slit mask. The GALAH survey requires an SNR greater than 100 for a star brightness of V ?= 14 in an exposure time of one hour. The total spectral coverage of the four channels is about 100 nm between 370 and 1000 nm for up to 392 simultaneous targets within the 2-degree field of view. HERMES has been commissioned over three runs, during bright time in October, November, and December 2013, in parallel with the beginning of the GALAH pilot survey, which started in November 2013. Using new integral field observations of 106 galaxies in three nearby clusters we investigate how the intrinsic scatter of the Fundamental Plane depends on the way in which the velocity dispersion and effective radius are measured. Our spatially resolved spectroscopy, combined with a cluster sample with negligible relative distance errors allows us to derive a Fundamental Plane with minimal systematic uncertainties. From the apertures we tested, we find that velocity dispersions measured within a circular aperture with radius equal to one effective radius minimises the intrinsic scatter of the Fundamental Plane. Using simple yet powerful Jeans dynamical models we determine dynamical masses for our galaxies. Replacing luminosity in the Fundamental Plane with dynamical mass, we demonstrate that the resulting Mass Plane has further reduced scatter, consistent with zero intrinsic scatter. Using these dynamical models we also find evidence for a possibly non-linear relationship between dynamical mass-to-light ratio and velocity dispersion., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. The TAIPAN instrument, currently being developed for the Australian Astronomical Observatory's UK Schmidt telescope at Siding Spring Observatory, makes use of the AAO's Starbug technology to deploy 150 science fibres to target positions on the optical plane. This paper describes the software system for controlling and deploying the fibre-bearing Starbug robots. The TAIPAN software is responsible for allocating each Starbug to its next target position based on its current position and the distribution of targets, finding a collision-free path for each Starbug, and then simultaneously controlling the Starbug hardware in a closed loop, with a metrology camera used to determine the position of each Starbug in the field during reconfiguration. The ability to position multiple miniaturized wavefront sensors precisely over large focal surfaces are advantageous to multi-object adaptive optics. The Australian Astronomical Observatory (AAO) has prototyped a compact and lightweight Shack-Hartmann wavefront-sensor that fits into a standard Starbug parallel fibre positioning robot. Each device makes use of a polymer coherent fibre imaging bundle to relay an image produced by a microlens array placed at the telescope focal plane to a re-imaging camera mounted elsewhere. The advantages of the polymer fibre bundle are its high-fill factor, high-throughput, low weight, and relatively low cost. Multiple devices can also be multiplexed to a single low-noise camera for cost efficiencies per wavefront sensor. The use of fibre bundles also opens the possibility of applications such as telescope field acquisition, guiding, and seeing monitors to be positioned by Starbugs.
