The phosphorus (P) concentration is increasing in parts of the Baltic Sea following the spring bloom. The fate of this excess P-pool is an open question, and here we investigate the role of microbial degradation processes in the excess P assimilation phase. During a 17-day-long mesocosm experiment in the southwest Finnish archipelago, we examined nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon acquiring extracellular enzyme activities in three size fractions (<0.2, 0.2–3, and >3 µm), bacterial abundance, production, community composition, and its predicted metabolic functions. The mesocosms received carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) amendments individually and in combination (NC) to distinguish between heterotrophic and autotrophic processes. Alkaline phosphatase activity occurred mainly in the dissolved form and likely contributed to the excess phosphate conditions together with grazing. At the beginning of the experiment, peptidolytic and glycolytic enzymes were mostly produced by free-living bacteria. However, by the end of the experiment, the NC-treatment induced a shift in peptidolytic and glycolytic activities and degradation of phosphomonoesters toward the particle-associated fraction, likely as a consequence of higher substrate availability. This would potentially promote retention of nutrients in the surface as opposed to sedimentation, but direct sedimentation measurements are needed to verify this hypothesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In terms of lifestyle, bacterioplankton can be classified as free-living (FL) and particle-attached (PA) forms, and both play essential roles in biogeochemical cycling in aquatic ecosystems. Structure, distribution, and community assembly of FL and PA bacteria in plateau riverine waterbodies are largely unknown. Therefore, we explored the seasonal dynamics of FLand PA bacterial communities in the Wujiangdu reservoir, Yungui Plateau using 16S rRNA gene highthroughput sequencing. Results revealed there was a significant environmental heterogeneity in Wujiangdu reservoir seasonally. The dominant phylum was Actinomycetota for FL and Pseudomonadota for PA bacteria. Species richness and diversity was higher in autumn and winter compared to spring and summer. In general, PA diversity was greater than FL, but with some temporal variations. Species turnover was the major contributor to β-diversity of both FL and PA lifestyles, and significant differences were noticed between FL and PA bacterial community composition. Distinct co-occurrence network patterns implied that more connections exist between FL bacteria, while more complex PA networks were in parallel to their greater diversity and stronger interactions in biofilms on particles. Dispersal limitation was the major driving force for both FL and PA bacterial community assembly. Deterministic processes were of relatively low importance, with homogeneous selection for FL and heterogeneous selection for PA bacteria. Temperature was the most important environmental driver of seasonal bacterial dynamics, followed by nitrate for FL and Secchi depth for PA bacteria. This study allows for a better understanding of the temporal variability of different bacteria lifestyles in reservoirs in the vulnerable and rapidly changing plateau environment, facilitating further microbial research related to global warming and eutrophication. Traces of life are nearly ubiquitous on Earth. However, a central unresolved question is whether these traces always indicate an active microbial community or whether, in extreme environments, such as hyperarid deserts, they instead reflect just dormant or dead cells. Although microbial biomass and diversity decrease with increasing aridity in the Atacama Desert, we provide multiple lines of evidence for the presence of an at times metabolically active, microbial community in one of the driest places on Earth. We base this observation on four major lines of evidence: (i) a physico-chemical characterization of the soil habitability after an exceptional rain event, (ii) identified biomolecules indicative of potentially active cells [e.g., presence of ATP, phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), metabolites, and enzymatic activity], (iii) measurements of in situ replication rates of genomes of uncultivated bacteria reconstructed from selected samples, and (iv) microbial community patterns specific to soil parameters and depths. We infer that the microbial populations have undergone selection and adaptation in response to their specific soil microenvironment and in particular to the degree of aridity. Collectively, our results highlight that even the hyperarid Atacama Desert can provide a habitable environment for microorganisms that allows them to become metabolically active following an episodic increase in moisture and that once it decreases, so does the activity of the microbiota. These results have implications for the prospect of life on other planets such as Mars, which has transitioned from an earlier wetter environment to today's extreme hyperaridity.

Citizen science projects have a long history in ecological studies. The research usefulness of such projects is dependent on applying simple and standardized methods. Here, we conducted a citizen science project that involved more than 3500 Swedish high school students to examine the temperature difference between surface water and the overlying air (Tw-Ta) as a proxy for sensible heat flux (QH). If QH is directed upward, corresponding to positive Tw-Ta, it can enhance CO2 and CH4 emissions from inland waters, thereby contributing to increased greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. The students found mostly negative Tw-Ta across small ponds, lakes, streams/rivers and the sea shore (i.e. downward QH), with Tw-Ta becoming increasingly negative with increasing Ta. Further examination of Tw-Ta using high-frequency temperature data from inland waters across the globe confirmed that Tw-Ta is linearly related to Ta. Using the longest available high-frequency temperature time series from Lake Erken, Sweden, we found a rapid increase in the occasions of negative Tw-Ta with increasing annual mean Ta since 1989. From these results, we can expect that ongoing and projected global warming will result in increasingly negative Tw-Ta, thereby reducing CO2 and CH4 transfer velocities from inland waters into the atmosphere.

The isotopic ratio 18O/16O of dissolved O2 in aquatic systems is affected by the preferential biological uptake of 16O (ε). Studies over the past six decades reveal that during incubation experiments, the isotopic effect of microorganism respiration (εorganism) varies in the range of −18‰ to −22‰. In contrast, natural variations in the deep‐ocean O2 concentration and δ18O levels show a considerably weaker effect (~ −10‰). The differences between these observations have been explained to result from either O2 uptake by sediments or organic particles that, due to diffusion‐limited respiration, are expected to weakly fractionate oxygen isotopes, by mixing processes or by weak fractionation at low temperatures. To gain better insight, we studied oxygen demand and δ18O in the deep, cold hypolimnion of Lake Stechlin between 2018 and 2021 as well as in various laboratory incubations. Our incubation results demonstrate an εorganism of about −24‰. Simple model calculations demonstrate a sediment O2 demand isotope effect (εSOD) of about −8.4‰, and a variated water‐column O2 demand isotope effect (εWOD) which is lower than εorganism, ranging from −13.9‰ in 2019 to −23‰ in 2021. Accompanying experiments indicate that the lower magnitude of εWOD may be related to respiration at organic particles lending to a weaker fractionation effect. Thus, variations in εWOD may reflect a changing partitioning of hypolimnion oxygen uptake between suspended particles and their containing microorganisms. The world's 1.4 million lakes (≥10 ha) provide many ecosystem services that are essential for human well‐being; however, only if their health status is good. Here, we reviewed common lake health issues and classified them using a simple human health‐based approach to outline that lakes are living systems that are in need of oxygen, clean water and a balanced energy and nutrient supply. The main reason for adopting some of the human health terminology for the lake health classification is to increase the awareness and understanding of global lake health issues. We show that lakes are exposed to various anthropogenic stressors which can result in many lake health issues, ranging from thermal, circulatory, respiratory, nutritional and metabolic issues to infections and poisoning. Of particular concern for human well‐being is the widespread lake drying, which is a severe circulatory issue with many cascading effects on lake health. We estimated that ∼115,000 lakes evaporate twice as much water as they gain from direct precipitation, making them vulnerable to potential drying if inflowing waters follow the drying trend, putting more than 153 million people at risk who live in close vicinity to those lakes. Where lake health issues remain untreated, essential ecosystem services will decline or even vanish, posing a threat to the well‐being of millions of people. We recommend coordinated multisectoral and multidisciplinary prevention and treatment strategies, which need to include a follow‐up of the progress and an assessment of the resilience of lakes to intensifying threats. Priority should be given to implementing sewage water treatment, mitigating climate change, counteracting introductions of non‐native species to lakes and decreasing uncontrolled anthropogenic releases of chemicals into the hydro‐, bio‐, and atmosphere. Plain Language Summary: Lakes around the world come in an array of sizes, shapes and colors, each telling a unique story of geological history and environmental importance. When lakes are healthy they contribute to the achievement of the global sustainable development goals by providing many important ecosystem services. Lakes are, however, not always healthy. Here, it is shown that lakes can suffer from a large variety of health issues, ranging from thermal, circulatory, respiratory, nutritional and metabolic issues to infections and poisoning. Without improved treatment strategies, many of the health issues may become chronic, affecting millions of people who are dependent on the ecosystem services from the lakes. To prevent and cure lakes from critical health conditions, strategies that are similar to those used in human healthcare should be applied: intervention and preventative actions before health problems occur, regular screening and early identification of lake health issues, and remediation and mitigation efforts at an appropriate scale, spanning from local to global. Members of the acI lineage of Actinobacteria are the most abundant microorganisms in most freshwater lakes; however, our understanding of the keys to their success and their role in carbon and nutrient cycling in freshwater systems has been hampered by the lack of pure cultures and genomes. We obtained draft genome assemblies from 11 single cells representing three acI tribes (acI-A1, acI-A7, acI-B1) from four temperate lakes in the United States and Europe. Comparative analysis of acI SAGs and other available freshwater bacterial genomes showed that acI has more gene content directed toward carbohydrate acquisition as compared to Polynucleobacter and LD12 Alphaproteobacteria, which seem to specialize more on carboxylic acids. The acI genomes contain actinorhodopsin as well as some genes involved in anaplerotic carbon fixation indicating the capacity to supplement their known heterotrophic lifestyle. Genome-level differences between the acI-A and acI-B clades suggest specialization at the clade level for carbon substrate acquisition. Overall, the acI genomes appear to be highly streamlined versions of Actinobacteria that include some genes allowing it to take advantage of sunlight and N-rich organic compounds such as polyamines, di- and oligopeptides, branched-chain amino acids and cyanophycin. This work significantly expands the known metabolic potential of the cosmopolitan freshwater acI lineage and its ecological and genetic traits.

Permafrost, a vast storage reservoir of frozen organic matter, is rapidly thawing due to climate change, releasing previously preserved carbon into the environment. This phenomenon has significant consequences for microbial communities, including fungi, inhabiting permafrost-associated regions. In this review, we delve into the intricate interplay between permafrost thawing and fungal diversity and functionality with an emphasis on thermokarst lakes. We explore how the release of organic carbon from thawing permafrost alters the composition and activities of fungal communities, emphasizing the potential for shifts in taxonomic diversity and functional gene expression. We discuss the formation of thermokarst lakes, as an example of permafrost thaw-induced ecological disruptions and their impact on fungal communities. Furthermore, we analyze the repercussions of these changes, including effects on nutrient cycling, plant productivity, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By elucidating the multifaceted relationship between permafrost thaw and aquatic fungi, this review provides valuable insights into the ecological consequences of ongoing climate change in permafrost-affected regions. The ocean–atmosphere exchange of carbon largely depends on the balance between carbon export of particulate organic carbon (POC) as sinking marine particles, and POC remineralization by attached microbial communities. Despite the vast spectrum of types, sources, ages, shapes, and composition of individual sinking particles, they are usually considered as a bulk together with their associated microbial communities. This limits our mechanistic understanding of the biological carbon pump (BCP) and its feedback on the global carbon cycle. We established a method to sample individual particles while preserving their shape, structure, and nucleic acids by placing a jellified RNA‐fixative at the bottom of drifting sediment traps. Coupling imaging of individual particles with associated 16S rRNA analysis reveals that active bacterial communities are highly heterogenous from one particles origin to another. In contrast to lab‐made particles, we found that complex in situ conditions lead to heterogeneity even within the same particle type. Our new method allows to associate patterns of active prokaryotic and functional diversity to particle features, enabling the detection of potential remineralization niches. This new approach will therefore improve our understanding of the BCP and numerical representation in the context of a rapidly changing ocean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
