Measurements of the cross sections are conducted for coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the d, gamma deutron to pi0 eta deutron, at the incident energy in the range of the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A rapidly increasing trend below 1 GeV is observed in the total cross section. The data are effectively reproduced by theoretical calculations incorporating the meson-deutron final-state interactions. However, the measured deutron angular distribution d sigma/d Omegad in the center-of-mass frame (gamma d) is rather flat, and it differs significantly from the strong backward-peaking behavior expected in the kinematics of d formation after pi0 eta photoproduction on an initial bound nucleon. In addition, the d sigma/dMeta d differential cross section exhibits a prominent enhancement near the eta d threshold, while d sigma/dMpi d exhibits an enhancement near the known pi d resonance with I=1 and JP=2+. From these observations, we have concluded that two reaction sequences occur; gamma d to pi0 D01 to pi0 eta d and eta D12 to pi0 eta d, where DIJ denotes a state with a baryon number of 2, an isospin of I, and a spin of J. The enhancement corresponding to D01 is expected to be a theoretically predicted eta NN bound state with I=0 and JP=1- or a virtual state of eta d. It is found that attraction between eta d is certainly very strong.

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $\pi^0 \eta$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $\pi^0 \eta$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi \eta}$, the $\pi^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi d}$, the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$ near the $\eta d$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $\eta d$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $\eta$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $\pi^0\eta$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $\eta$-nuclear interaction are also discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

BL-774 is a control, data acquisition, and online analysis platform for addressing the requirements in future beamline experiments at SPring-8-II. To date, we have achieved implementations related to “robustness and flexibility” and “configuration management”. These implementations were made possible by the two-phase development workflow. The two-phase development is characterized by a dedicated rapid application development environment that beamline scientists can use rapidly and easily in real beamline environments, and web-based graphical user interfaces that BL-774 software developers have incorporated the achievements of the beamline scientists as part of the official release of the beamline control software. BL-774 has been introduced in two beamlines to date, and we plan to implement it in more beamlines while adding more features. We plan to integrate BL-774 seamlessly with other systems that are currently under development in the facility, such as two-dimensional detector systems and SPring-8 data centers. By introducing BL-774 in conjunction with other infrastructure in the facility, more advanced experimental operations, such as feedback operations based on online data analysis or remote operations from outside the beamlines, are to be expected. Contains fulltext : 235407.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) BACKGROUND: Randomised, controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown the survival benefit of concomitant chemoradiotherapy or hyperfractionated radiotherapy in the treatment of locally advanced head and neck cancer. However, the relative efficacy of these treatments is unknown. We aimed to determine whether one treatment was superior to the other. METHODS: We did a frequentist network meta-analysis based on individual patient data of meta-analyses evaluating the role of chemotherapy (Meta-Analysis of Chemotherapy in Head and Neck Cancer [MACH-NC]) and of altered fractionation radiotherapy (Meta-Analysis of Radiotherapy in Carcinomas of Head and Neck [MARCH]). Randomised, controlled trials that enrolled patients with non-metastatic head and neck squamous cell cancer between Jan 1, 1980, and Dec 31, 2016, were included. We used a two-step random-effects approach, and the log-rank test, stratified by trial to compare treatments, with locoregional therapy as the reference. Overall survival was the primary endpoint. The global Cochran Q statistic was used to assess homogeneity and consistency and P score to rank treatments (higher scores indicate more effective therapies). FINDINGS: 115 randomised, controlled trials, which enrolled patients between Jan 1, 1980, and April 30, 2012, yielded 154 comparisons (28 978 patients with 19 253 deaths and 20 579 progression events). Treatments were grouped into 16 modalities, for which 35 types of direct comparisons were available. Median follow-up based on all trials was 6·6 years (IQR 5·0-9·4). Hyperfractionated radiotherapy with concomitant chemotherapy (HFCRT) was ranked as the best treatment for overall survival (P score 97%; hazard ratio 0·63 [95% CI 0·51-0·77] compared with locoregional therapy). The hazard ratio of HFCRT compared with locoregional therapy with concomitant chemoradiotherapy with platinum-based chemotherapy (CLRT(P)) was 0·82 (95% CI 0·66-1·01) for overall survival. The superiority of HFCRT was robust to sensitivity analyses. Three other modalities of treatment had a better P score, but not a significantly better HR, for overall survival than CLRT(P) (P score 78%): induction chemotherapy with taxane, cisplatin, and fluorouracil followed by locoregional therapy (IC(TaxPF)-LRT; 89%), accelerated radiotherapy with concomitant chemotherapy (82%), and IC(TaxPF) followed by CLRT (80%). INTERPRETATION: The results of this network meta-analysis suggest that further intensifying chemoradiotherapy, using HFCRT or IC(TaxPF)-CLRT, could improve outcomes over chemoradiotherapy for the treatment of locally advanced head and neck cancer. We measured missing mass spectrum of the ^{12}C(γ,p) reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from η^{'} bound nuclei. We tagged an (η+p) pair associated with the η^{'}N→ηN process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle cosθ_{lab}^{ηp}

The gyromagnetic factor of the low-lying E=251.96(9) keV isomeric state of the nucleus ^{99}Zr was measured using the time-dependent perturbed angular distribution technique. This level is assigned a spin and parity of J^{π}=7/2^{+}, with a half-life of T_{1/2}=336(5) ns. The isomer was produced and spin aligned via the abrasion-fission of a ^{238}U primary beam at RIKEN RIBF. A magnetic moment |μ|=2.31(14)μ_{N} was deduced showing that this isomer is not single particle in nature. A comparison of the experimental values with interacting boson-fermion model IBFM-1 results shows that this state is strongly mixed with a main νd_{5/2} composition. Furthermore, it was found that monopole single-particle evolution changes significantly with the appearance of collective modes, likely due to type-II shell evolution.

Background: Pembrolizumab is active in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), with programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression associated with improved response. Methods: KEYNOTE-048 was a randomised, phase 3 study of participants with untreated locally incurable recurrent or metastatic HNSCC done at 200 sites in 37 countries. Participants were stratified by PD-L1 expression, p16 status, and performance status and randomly allocated (1:1:1) to pembrolizumab alone, pembrolizumab plus a platinum and 5-fluorouracil (pembrolizumab with chemotherapy), or cetuximab plus a platinum and 5-fluorouracil (cetuximab with chemotherapy). Investigators and participants were aware of treatment assignment. Investigators, participants, and representatives of the sponsor were masked to the PD-L1 combined positive score (CPS) results; PD-L1 positivity was not required for study entry. The primary endpoints were overall survival (time from randomisation to death from any cause) and progression-free survival (time from randomisation to radiographically confirmed disease progression or death from any cause, whichever came first) in the intention-to-treat population (all participants randomly allocated to a treatment group). There were 14 primary hypotheses: superiority of pembrolizumab alone and of pembrolizumab with chemotherapy versus cetuximab with chemotherapy for overall survival and progression-free survival in the PD-L1 CPS of 20 or more, CPS of 1 or more, and total populations and non-inferiority (non-inferiority margin: 1·2) of pembrolizumab alone and pembrolizumab with chemotherapy versus cetuximab with chemotherapy for overall survival in the total population. The definitive findings for each hypothesis were obtained when statistical testing was completed for that hypothesis; this occurred at the second interim analysis for 11 hypotheses and at final analysis for three hypotheses. Safety was assessed in the as-treated population (all participants who received at least one dose of allocated treatment). This study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02358031. Findings: Between April 20, 2015, and Jan 17, 2017, 882 participants were allocated to receive pembrolizumab alone (n=301), pembrolizumab with chemotherapy (n=281), or cetuximab with chemotherapy (n=300); of these, 754 (85%) had CPS of 1 or more and 381 (43%) had CPS of 20 or more. At the second interim analysis, pembrolizumab alone improved overall survival versus cetuximab with chemotherapy in the CPS of 20 or more population (median 14·9 months vs 10·7 months, hazard ratio [HR] 0·61 [95% CI 0·45–0·83], p=0·0007) and CPS of 1 or more population (12·3 vs 10·3, 0·78 [0·64–0·96], p=0·0086) and was non-inferior in the total population (11·6 vs 10·7, 0·85 [0·71–1·03]). Pembrolizumab with chemotherapy improved overall survival versus cetuximab with chemotherapy in the total population (13·0 months vs 10·7 months, HR 0·77 [95% CI 0·63–0·93], p=0·0034) at the second interim analysis and in the CPS of 20 or more population (14·7 vs 11·0, 0·60 [0·45–0·82], p=0·0004) and CPS of 1 or more population (13·6 vs 10·4, 0·65 [0·53–0·80], p

Exotic nuclei are characterized by a number of neutrons (or protons) in excess relative to stable nuclei. Their shell structure, which represents single-particle motion in a nucleus, may vary due to nuclear force and excess neutrons, in a phenomenon called shell evolution. This effect could be counterbalanced by collective modes causing deformations of the nuclear surface. Here, we study the interplay between shell evolution and shape deformation by focusing on the magnetic moment of an isomeric state of the neutron-rich nucleus 75Cu. We measure the magnetic moment using highly spin-controlled rare-isotope beams and achieving large spin alignment via a two-step reaction scheme that incorporates an angular-momentum-selecting nucleon removal. By combining our experiments with numerical simulations of many-fermion correlations, we find that the low-lying states in 75Cu are, to a large extent, of single-particle nature on top of a correlated 74Ni core. We elucidate the crucial role of shell evolution even in the presence of the collective mode, and within the same framework, we consider whether and how the double magicity of the 78Ni nucleus is restored, which is also of keen interest from the perspective of nucleosynthesis in explosive stellar processes., 10 pages, 4 figures

Recently, we developed a new statistical method for revealing the regulatory systems in living cells. Our method is based on Structural Equation Modelling combined with factor analysis. In generally, Structural Equation Modelling is utilized to detect the model adaptability with the measured data, such as large-scale questionnaire data. In this study, we improved our developed iteration algorithm and gene selection procedure to infer the causalities between variables as a regulatory network from limited numerical data. Our improved gene selection method is based on cross correlation to summarize the time preceding information from gene expression profiles, which were systematically measured at 8 time points. Cross correlation is usually utilized as a measure of similarity between two waves by a time-lag application, and we defined the values of lags ranging from −2 to +4. By this improved method, we selected 14 genes as regulatory factors for the specific system in oleaginous yeast. In the inferred model, only 6 genes among the selected 14 genes were considered to affect the volume of oil accumulation in a closed and specific system. Our method will be useful to artificially control cell systems in the bioproduction and biotechnology fields.

Demonstrating the effect that climate change is having on regional weather is a subject which occupies climate scientists, government policy makers and the media. After an extreme weather event occurs, the question is often posed, ‘Was the event caused by anthropogenic climate change?’ Recently, a new branch of climate science (known as attribution) has sought to quantify how much the risk of extreme events occurring has increased or decreased due to climate change. One method of attribution uses very large ensembles of climate models computed via volunteer distributed computing. A recent advancement is the ability to run both a global climate model and a higher resolution regional climate model on a volunteer's home computer. Such a set-up allows the simulation of weather on a scale that is of most use to studies of the attribution of extreme events. This article introduces a global climate model that has been developed to simulate the climatology of all major land regions with reasonable accuracy. This then provides the boundary conditions to a regional climate model (which uses the same formulation but at higher resolution) to ensure that it can produce realistic climate and weather over any region of choice. The development process is documented and a comparison to previous coupled climate models and atmosphere-only climate models is made. The system (known as weather@home) by which the global model is coupled to a regional climate model and run on volunteers' home computers is then detailed. Finally, a validation of the whole system is performed, with a particular emphasis on how accurately the distributions of daily mean temperature and daily mean precipitation are modelled in a particular application over Europe. This builds confidence in the applicability of the weather@home system for event attribution studies.

The significance of nonisentropic irreversible mixing processes is diagnosed for idealized simulations of synoptic-scale baroclinic wave life cycles along the subtropical jet stream, using a nonhydrostatic, anelastic, mesoscale model subject to a free-slip surface boundary condition. A variety of morphological features of mixing is identified such as a mesoscale columnar vortex associated with the onset of frontal fracture, episodic overturnings along the surface fronts, “wrinkling” of the tropopause, and injection of tropospheric air into the stratosphere. The evolution of the degree of nonisentropic irreversible mixing is first analyzed by computing the change of the “base” component of potential energy that cannot be converted into kinetic energy. The structure of the mixing activity is also diagnosed through inspection of spatiotemporal changes of entropy to demonstrate that the surface fronts are by far the most active regions of such activity. This activity is found to be primarily longitudinal, extending from the surface to the lower stratosphere, to form a three-dimensional spiral in the synoptic-scale cyclone and along the fronts. However, an exceptional region also exists along the warm front, where the structure becomes primarily transverse in the mature phase of frontal development in a model including an explicit representation of small-scale turbulence. In all simulations, the net transfer of mass and heat across the tropopause is from troposphere to stratosphere. The maximum transfer occurs when the observed climatological level of stratification contrast is assumed between stratosphere and troposphere. The same climatological choice leads to a minimum net irreversible mixing, which occurs primarily at Earth's surface.

A number of studies have set out to obtain a range of atmosphere and ocean model behavior by perturbing parameters in a single climate model (perturbed physics ensemble: PPE). Early studies used shallow layer slab ocean or flux-adjusted coupled ocean-atmosphere models to obtain a broad range of behavior as characterized by climate sensitivity. A recent study reports a relatively narrow range of sensitivities (2.2–3.2°C) in a PPE of 35 coupled models without flux adjustment, raising the question whether previous broad ranges were an artifact of the use of models that were not in top-of-atmosphere (TOA) energy balance. Moreover, no PPE experiment has reported a large spread of behavior of the ocean compared to that exhibited in a multi-model ensemble (MME) such as Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 (CMIP3). In this work, we randomly perturb model parameters of a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model using a space-filling design containing 10,000 combinations. The ensemble is run over the distributed computing platform of climateprediction.net under fixed pre-industrial forcing without flux adjustment. We resample a second, 20,000-member, ensemble with perturbations conditioned on the TOA fluxes from the first ensemble to not drift significantly from a realistic base state while targeting a range of behavior. Models within the targeted ensemble show realistic regional control climates when compared to the CMIP3 ensemble, although there is a bias in global mean surface temperature. The range of predicted equilibrium climate sensitivities of the targeted ensemble is substantially smaller than that obtained with flux adjustment, but larger than the range in the CMIP3 ensemble or in the 35-model un-flux-adjusted PPE in a recent study mentioned above. The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation in the targeted ensemble exhibits a spread in strength as wide as that found in the CMIP3 ensemble. We conclude that flux adjustment is not a pre-requisite for obtaining a broad spread of behavior in a perturbed physics ensemble.

We have developed a parametrization of Jovian moist convection based on a heat engine model of moist convection. In comparison to other moist convection schemes, this framework allows the computation of the total available convective energy TCAPE and the corresponding mass flux M as dynamic variables from the mean atmospheric state. The effects of this parametrization have been investigated both analytically and numerically. In agreement with previous numerical experiments and observations, the inclusion of moist convection leads to heat and water vapor transport from the water condensation level into higher altitudes. The time development of the modeled convective events was found to be strongly influenced by a rapid reduction of kinetic energy and a subsequent lowering of the cumulus tower's top in response to convective heating. We have tested the sensitivity of the scheme to different variations in the fractional cloud coverage and under the inclusion of external radiative forcing towards a stable/unstable temperature profile. While the time development of convective events differs in response to these variations, the general moist convective heating and moistening of the upper troposphere was a robust feature observed in all experiments.

We propose a dynamical mechanism that can plausibly explain the origin of the broad prograde equatorial winds observed on Jupiter and Saturn, and examine the feasibility of this mechanism using two- (2D) and three-dimensional (313) numerical simulation models. The idea is based on combining a narrow Gaussian jet peaking at the equator, which is induced by the momentum transfer from an upward propagating equatorial Kelvin-wave, and a pair of off-equatorial jets due to a meridional-vertical circulation similar to the tropical Hadley circulation on Earth. We employ for this feasibility study a 2D mechanistic mean-flow model which incorporates the influence of prescribed waves;, and a 3D general circulation model, based on the generalised primitive equations of atmospheric motion. We then confirm that the dynamical models of both kinds can successfully reproduce theoretically expected flows of a reasonable magnitude, and that when two mechanisms are combined, a broad super-rotating jet is produced with off-equatorial maxima in zonal velocity for both Jupiter and Saturn, approximately in accordance with observations. andCOPY; 2005 Elsevier Ltd. A series of analyses combining feature-tracking from visible images and infrared sounding observations obtained by Voyager I and 2 are presented for the region surrounding Jupiter's Great Red Spot. By making use of various dynamical balance constraints, fully three-dimensional maps of a number of meteorological variables (such as horizontal wind, isobaric geopotential height and vertical velocity) can be recovered. Such maps are of immense potential value in a variety of studies of atmospheres such as those of the outer planets, and some possible extensions of this approach to ongoing and future spacecraft missions are discussed. We have developed an event mixing technique to observe Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) between two identical neutral pions produced in photo-induced reactions in the non-perturbative QCD energy region. It is found that the missing-mass consistency cut and the pion-energy cut are essential for the event mixing method to effectively extract BEC observables. A Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is used to validate these constraints and confirms the efficiency of this method. Our work paves the way for similar BEC studies at lower energies where the multiplicity of emitted bosons is limited.

The total cross sections were measured for coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron at incident energies below 0.9 GeV for the first time. No clear resonance-like behavior is observed in the excitation function for $W_{\gamma d}=2.38$--2.61 GeV, where the $d^*(2380)$ dibaryon resonance observed at COSY is expected to appear. The measured excitation function is consistent with the existing theoretical calculation for this reaction. The upper limit of the total cross section is found to be $0.034$~$\mu$b for the dibaryon resonance at $W_{\gamma d}=2.37$~GeV (90\% confidence level) in the $\gamma d \to \pi^0\pi^0 d$ reaction., Comment: submitted to Physics Letters B

Trichosporon fungemia is a rare and fatal fungal infection that occurs in patients with prolonged neutropenia associated with hematologic malignancies. A 21-year-old male developed Trichosporon fungemia during remission induction therapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Although two courses of induction therapy failed to induce a remission of AML, combination therapy with voriconazole and liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB) followed by monocyte colony-stimulating factor ameliorated the Trichosporon fungemia and enabled the patient to receive reduced-intensity bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from his human leukocyte antigen-A one-locus mismatched mother. The patient achieved a durable remission after BMT without exacerbation of Trichosporon fungemia. The combination therapy with voriconazole and L-AmB may therefore be useful in controlling Trichosporon fungemia associated with prolonged neutropenia after remission induction therapy for AML.

Modification of JT-60U to a superconducting device (so called JT-60SA) has been planned to contribute to ITER and DEMO. The NBI system is required to inject D 0 beams of 34 MW for 100 s. The upgraded NBI system for JT-60SA consists of 12 positive-ion-based NBI (P-NBI) units and one negative-ion-based NBI (N-NBI) unit. The injection powers of each P-NBI and N-NBI units are 2 MW at 85 keV and 10 MW at 500 keV, respectively. On JT-60U, the long pulse operations of 30 s at 2 MW and 20 s at 3.2 MW have been achieved on the P-NBI and N-NBI units, respectively. Both units have demonstrated no injection power degradation for long pulse operation. It has been also found that the thermal time constants of the main key components with active cooling, such as the ion source of the present NBI system, are less than ∼20 s. Therefore, the pulse extension up to 100 s is expected to need some modifications mainly the power supply system. In addition, the voltage-holding capability of the negative ion source is required to be improved. The detailed technical design of the NBI system for JT-60SA is presented.

A series of rotating, thermal convection experiments were carried out on the Coriolis platform in Grenoble, France, to investigate the formation and energetics of systems of zonal jets through nonlinear eddy/wave-zonal flow interactions on a topographic ß-plane. The latterwas produced by a combination of a rigid, conically sloping bottom and the rotational deformation of the free upper surface. Convection was driven by a system of electrical heaters laid under the (thermally conducting) sloping bottom and led to the production of intense, convective vortices. These were observed to grow in size as each experiment proceeded and led to the development of weak but clear azimuthal jet-like flows, with a radial scale that varied according to the rotation speed of the platform. Detailed analyses reveal that the kinetic energy-weighted radial wavenumber of the zonal jets, kJ y, scales quite closely either with the Rhines wavenumber as kJ y ≃ 2(βT/2urms)1/2, where urms is the rms total or eddy velocity and βT is the vorticity gradient produced by the sloping topography, or the anisotropy wavenumber as kJ y ≃ 1.25(β3T ε{lunate})1/5, where ε{lunate} is the upscale turbulent energy transfer rate. Jets are primarily produced by the direct quasi-linear action of horizontal Reynolds stresses produced by trains of topographic Rossby waves. The nonlinear production rate of zonal kinetic energy is found to be strongly unsteady, however, with fluctuations of order 10-100 times the amplitude of the mean production rate for all cases considered. The time scale of such fluctuations is found to scale consistently with either an inertial time scale, Τp ~ 1.√urms βT, or the Ekman spin-down time scale. Kinetic energy spectra show some evidence for a k-5/3 inertial subrange in the isotropic component, suggestive of a classical Kolmogorov-Batchelor-Kraichnan upscale energy cascade and a steeper spectrum in the zonal mean flow, though not as steep as k-5, as anticipated for fully zonostrophic flow. This is consistent with a classification of all of these flows as marginally zonostrophic, as expected for values of the zonostrophy parameter Rβ ≃ 1.6-1.7, though a number of properties related to flow anisotropy were found to vary significantly and systematically within this range.

The measurement of electron density is still important in a steady state fusion reactor in the future in addition to neutron and magnetic measurements in order to control the fusion output and to sustain stable plasma discharges. In the present toroidal fusion devices, FIR interferometer and Thomson scattering diagnostics have been used for the electron density measurement as an active diagnostic method. However, it is very difficult to operate such instruments continuously over a year. The use of visible bremsstrahlung as the passive diagnostics is, then, proposed as the electron density monitor instead of such active diagnostics. Since the effective charge, Zeff, is considered to be much less than 2 in the high-density fusion reactor, the bremsstrahlung intensity, which is proportional to the square of electron density, becomes a typical indicator of the electron density. In order to check the feasibility, the line-averaged density and the square root of visible bremsstrahlung signals were compared using two kinds of high-density LHD discharges in a range of (5–10) × 1013 cm−3, such as H2 gas puff and repetitively injected H2 ice pellets discharges. A ratio of the square root of the visible bremsstrahlung signal to the density was a constant in both discharges. The visible bremsstrahlung profile was also compared with the density profile. The results obtained in the present study strongly suggested the use of the visible bremsstrahlung to the density monitor in the future reactor diagnostics.

We report a 69-year-old man with cytokine-resistant metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated with reduced-intensity unrelated cord blood transplantation. The patient achieved durable donor engraftment with minimal graft-versus-host disease. The patient showed regression of metastatic disease, providing the first evidence of a graft-versus-tumor effect on a solid tumor resulting from cord blood graft.

Numerical studies of small-scale forced, two-dimensional turbulent flows on the surface of a rotating sphere have revealed strong large-scale anisotropization that culminates in the emergence of quasi-steady sets of alternating zonal jets, or zonation. The kinetic energy spectrum of such flows also becomes strongly anisotropic. For the zonal modes, a steep spectral distribution, E(n)=CZ (Ω/R)2 n-5, is established, where CZ=O(1) is a non-dimensional coefficient, Ω is the angular velocity, and R is the radius of the sphere, respectively. For other, non-zonal modes, the classical, Kolmogorov-Batchelor-Kraichnan, spectral law is preserved. This flow regime, referred to as a zonostrophic regime, appears to have wide applicability to large-scale planetary and terrestrial circulations as long as those are characterized by strong rotation, vertically stable stratification and small Burger numbers. The well-known manifestations of this regime are the banded disks of the outer planets of our Solar System. Relatively less known examples are systems of narrow, subsurface, alternating zonal jets throughout all major oceans discovered in state-of-the-art, eddy-permitting simulations of the general oceanic circulation. Furthermore, laboratory experiments recently conducted using the Coriolis turntable have basically confirmed that the lateral gradient of ''planetary vorticity'' (emulated via the topographic β-effect) is the primary cause of the zonation and that the latter is entwined with the development of the strongly anisotropic kinetic energy spectrum that tends to attain the same zonal and non-zonal distributions, −5 and , respectively, in both the slope and the magnitude, as the corresponding spectra in other environmental conditions. The non-dimensional coefficient CZ in the −5 spectral law appears to be invariant, , in a variety of simulated and natural flows. This paper provides a brief review of the zonostrophic regime. The review includes the discussion of the physical nature, basic mechanisms, scaling laws and universality of this regime. A parameter range conducive to its establishment is identified, and collation of laboratory and naturally occurring flows is presented through which the zonostrophic regime manifests itself in the real world.

This study presents the recent progress made in developing a spiral fiber tracker (SFT) for use in the experiment TREK/E36 planned at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. This kaon decay experiment uses a stopped positive kaon beam to search for physics beyond the Standard Model through precision measurements of lepton universality and through searches for a heavy sterile neutrino and a dark photon. Detecting and tracking positrons and positive muons from kaon decays are of importance in achieving high-precision measurements; therefore, we designed and are developing the new tracking detector using a scintillating fiber. In the negative ion based neutral beam injector (N-NBI) for JT-60U, an extension of the pulse duration up to 30 s has been intended to study quasi-steady state plasmas, where the NBI pulse duration is significantly longer than the plasma current diffusion time. Achieving long pulse injection requires a reduction of the heat load on the grids of the ion source. The ion source was modified to reduce the pressure within the grid structure by increasing the vacuum conductance of the acceleration grids. The acceleration efficiency was improved from 0.74 to 0.79. The heat load of the grounded grid, which was the main heat load of the acceleration grids, decreased from 9.2 to 7.0% at a constant arc chamber pressure of 0.3 Pa. These improvements seemed to be caused by the reduction of beam ion stripping loss. Up to now, a long pulse injection of 17 s at the power of 1.6 MW with beam energy of 366 keV was obtained by using one ion source. The temperature rise of the cooling water from the grounded grid saturated at less than 35 °C during operation, so the heat load of the grid is significantly reduced for steady state operation at this power level.

Summary Monocytes are composed of two distinct subpopulations in the peripheral blood as determined by their surface antigen expressions, profiles of cytokine production and functional roles played in vivo. We attempted to delineate the unique functional roles played by a minor CD16highCCR2– subpopulation of circulating monocytes. They produced significant levels of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, but very low levels of IL-10 upon in vitro stimulation. Characteristic profiles of cytokine production were confirmed by stimulating purified subpopulations of monocytes after cell sorting. It was noteworthy that freshly isolated CD16highCCR2– monocyte subpopulations produced significant levels of haem oxygenase (HO)-1, whereas the major CD16lowCCR2+ subpopulation produced little. These results were contrary to the generally accepted notion that the CD16highCCR2– monocyte subpopulation plays a predominantly proinflammatory role in vivo. The CD16highCCR2– subpopulation increased in Kawasaki disease and influenza virus infection. In accord with this, HO-1 mRNA expression by mononuclear cells was significantly increased in these illnesses. These results indicate that CD16highCCR2– subpopulations are of a distinct lineage from CD16lowCCR2+ monocytes. More importantly, they may represent a monocyte subpopulation with a unique functional role to regulate inflammation by producing HO-1 in steady state in vivo.

Summary Resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic phytoalexin, has been considered as a potential anti-inflammatory agent because of its suppressive effect on nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB). However, we recently found that treatment of glomerular mesangial cells with resveratrol significantly and dose-dependently enhanced NF-κB activation triggered by proinflammatory cytokines. This finding was evidenced by different reporter assays as well as by expression of an endogenous NF-κB-dependent gene, intercellular adhesion molecule-1. The NF-κB promoting effect of resveratrol was also observed in renal tubular LLCPK1 cells, but not in HepG2 hepatoma cells. In all cell types tested, treatment with resveratrol alone did not affect NF-κB activity. The enhanced activation of NF-κB by resveratrol progressed for at least 24 h and was accompanied by sustained down-regulation of an endogenous NF-κB inhibitor, IκBβ, but not IκBα. Although expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase was suppressed by resveratrol, nitric oxide, a negative regulator of NF-κB, was not involved in the regulation of NF-κB by resveratrol. These data elucidated, for the first time, that resveratrol may enhance activation of NF-κB under certain circumstances.

Glucose and the combination of leucine and glutamine were used to stimulate insulin secretion from rat islets during a dynamic perifusion and the responses obtained were compared with those elicited from mouse islets under identical conditions. In rat islets, glucose (15 mM) or the amino acid combination of 10 mM glutamine plus 20 mM leucine were most efficacious and peak second-phase insulin release responses were 20- to 30-fold above prestimulatory rates. In contrast to rat islet responses, sustained second-phase insulin secretory responses to the same agonists were minimally increased 1- to 2-fold from mouse islets. Parallel studies demonstrated that phospholipase C (PLC) was markedly activated in rat, but not mouse, islets by both high glucose concentrations and the amino acid combination. Additional studies documented that glucose and amino acid responses of both rat and mouse islets were amplified by carbachol or forskolin. However, wortmannin, a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor, amplified only the responses to glucose leaving the responses to the amino acid mixture unaltered. These observations support the concept that mitochondrial metabolism alone is minimally effective in stimulating insulin secretion from islets. The activation of the supplementary second messenger systems (PLC and/or cAMP) appears essential for the emergence of their full secretory potential. The mechanism regulating the potency and specificity of wortmannin’s impact on glucose-induced secretion remains to be identified; however a unique mechanism is supported by these findings.

The crystal structures, electronic and magnetic properties of conducting molecular magnets developed in our group are reviewed. (DMET)2FeBr4 is composed of alternating stacks of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) donor sheets and square lattice magnetic anion sheets. This salt undergoes an SDW transition of the donor layer at 40 K and an antiferromagnetic transition of Fe3+ spins on the anion layer at 3.7 K. The one-to-one correspondence of the anomalies appearing on the magnetization curves with those on the magnetoresistance supports the presence of the π–d interaction. (EDO–TTFI2)2[M(mnt)2] (M=Ni,Pt) consists of 1D chains of conducting donors and magnetic anions aligned in parallel. These salts show metallic conductivity accompanied with a metal–insulator transition around 90 K. Localized spins on the anions behave as a 1D ferromagnet, whose origin is explained by McConnell's first model. The properties of related materials, (EDTDM)2FeBr4, (EDS–TTF)2FeBr4 and (EDO–TTFBr2)2FeBr4, are also presented.

We evaluated electrical velocimetry, a noninvasive method for continuous cardiac output measurement, in very-low and low birth weight infants and the influence of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and ventilators on this method.This prospective study compared 81 pairs of simultaneous cardiac output measurements by electrical velocimetry and transthoracic echocardiography in 28 patients. Data were compared by correlation, Bland-Altman analysis and two-way analysis of variance.The two methods exhibited a high correlation (r=0.859, P0.0001). The bias (mean difference of the methods) and percent error (100 × 1.96 × s.d./mean cardiac output) were -6 ml min(-1) and 29.2%, respectively. PDA significantly affected the bias (P=0.0004), but ventilators did not (P=0.14). Hemodynamically significant PDA had a larger bias (-36 ml min(-1)) and higher percent error (38.6%).Although influenced by PDA, electrical velocimetry was generally interchangeable with transthoracic echocardiography even using ventilators.

It is an important subject to automatically generate train rescheduling timetables after a transport disorder has occurred. In urban areas in Japan, for the convenience of passengers, JR and private companies have lines that converge with each other. However, certain types of cars cannot run on other companies’ tracks and this may hamper rescheduling operations. Therefore, the authors propose an automatic method to generate train rescheduling timetables. For the through operation and turning operation, the authors consider routes on tracks and different car types. The authors treat train rescheduling as returning trains to their original location in rescheduling time. Generating a rescheduling timetable is an operation that results in trains returning to their original location in rescheduling time. For this method, the authors use a recursive tree structure for the route on track, and calculate the schedule by round robin. All solutions can become options for rescheduling. Choosing from the several options that are calculated, the authors method adopts the solution that has the even distribution of headway at the main stations.

The 500 keV negative-ion based neutral beam injector for JT-60U has been operated since 1996 and has injected so far a neutral beam power of 5.2 MW at 350 keV for 0.7 s. In order to further increase the beam power and extend the beam pulse duration time, a few issues concerning the negative ion source have to be solved. The most serious issue of them is non-uniformity of source plasma in the arc chamber. Two out of some countermeasures for improving the non-uniformity have been tried. The first is changing the spatial distribution of the arc discharge through regulating arc current resistors which connect in series to each of eight filament groups. The second is masking both ends of the plasma grid with thin molybdenum plates to block beam extraction at the edges. Owing to these countermeasures, the acceleration efficiency of the deuterium negative ion beams in the accelerator has improved by more than 30% from 0.55 to 0.74.

The authors provide a detailed analysis of a shallow mode of subsynoptic-scale baroclinic instability by analyzing a one-dimensional column model in which the assumption of balance is applied to the basic-state flow but in which nongeostrophic unbalanced effects are retained in the description of the evolution of the perturbation under the Boussinesq approximation. This model is employed to analyze the stability of a meridionally confined mean state that is based upon hydrodynamic fields extracted from the central columns of a tropospheric cross section of the midlatitude jet stream. Numerical solutions are obtained at very high resolution through application of a sparse matrix method for solution of the corresponding cubic eigenvalue problem. Thereby the existence of a deep synoptic-scale mode and boundary-confined subsynoptic-scale modes is confirmed. The spatial scale and phase speed of these modes agree with those previously obtained on the basis of both nonseparable stability analysis and solution of the associated initial value problem in the companion paper by Yamazaki and Peltier. Both one-dimensional and nonseparable shallow modes share the property that they are characterized by the presence of an inertial critical layer, and the lack of a short-wave cutoff of the subsynoptic-scale modes suggested by analyses of the nonseparable models is more clearly shown in the column model. However, the growth rate of the shallow mode in the column model is approximately 1 order of magnitude smaller than those of the structures delivered by the nonseparable analyses, and the vertical structure and the energy budget of these modes vary dramatically depending on the sign of the meridional wavenumber that determines the direction of meridional propagation.

In JT-60U, a high-energy neutral beam injection (NBI) program using negative-ion based NBI (N-NBI) for non-inductive current drive and core plasma heating studies in high-density plasma has progressed. The target performance of the N-NBI is a neutral beam injection power of 10 MW for 10 s at 500 keV. A neutral beam power of 5.2 MW at 350 keV with deuterium has already been injected into JT-60U plasma. The beam divergence and power loading onto the beamline components are two important items to evaluate beam performance. The beam divergence, estimated roughly from heat loads at the beam drift duct in beam injection experiments into JT-60U plasma, was around 4 mrad for the horizontal direction and 6 mrad for the vertical direction, which were close to the design values of 5 mrad. The power loading on beamline components were reasonable as compared with the design value.
