In oktober 2021 is een veldproef uitgevoerd waarbij een actief koolsuspensie in een grondwaterput van WML bij Grubbenvorst is geïnjecteerd. Dit met het doel een reactieve zone rond de put te creëren waar ondergrondse zuivering kan plaatsvinden. Vooraf was het doel van de proef om 8000 kg kool met een concentratie van 0,5 g/L te injecteren in een straal van 25 m rond de put. Tijdens de injectie nam de injectiedruk echter snel toe en moest de proef stopgezet worden. Tot op dat punt was tussen de 1000-1800 kg kool geïnjecteerd met een gemiddelde concentratie tussen 0,6 en 1,1 g kool/l. Door middel van een boring na afloop van de proef is aangetoond dat het kool hierbij in ieder geval tot 4,4 meter van PP08 in de formatie is doorgedrongen. Om de put te regenereren is op basis van een aantal batchexperimenten gekozen voor chemische reiniging met waterstofperoxide en zoutzuur (HCl). In juli en augustus van 2022 is de put succesvol geregenereerd, waarbij het specifiek debiet hersteld is tot dat van voor de veldproef en ongeveer 60-70% van het specifieke debiet bij oplevering van de put in 1969.

Dit rapport bevat de analyse van de gegevens uit de grondwaterkwaliteitsmonitoring die is uitgevoerd bij het HTO-systeem van Ennatuurlijk Aardwarmte (voormalig ECW Energy) in Middenmeer – het enige operationele HTO-systeem boven de 50°C in Nederland. Dit systeem is nu ruim 2 jaar operationeel, en bestaat uit een monitoringsput, een warme (ofwel hete) bron en een koude (ofwel lauwe) bron. Alle drie deze putten zijn gedurende de operationele fase herhaaldelijk bemonsterd, alsmede voorafgaand aan ingebruikname. De verzamelde monsters zijn uitgebreid geanalyseerd op zowel chemische als microbiologische parameters. Deze resultaten uit de praktijk hebben een verbeterd inzicht opgeleverd in de effecten van de HTO op de grondwaterkwaliteit, de beïnvloedende factoren en de aandachtspunten bij de bepaling daarvan.

Op veel locaties in Nederland bevat de bovengrond, het onverzadigde deel van de bodem, meetbare gehaltes aan PFAS-verontreiniging zonder duidelijk aanwijsbare bron. In grondwaterbeschermingsgebieden kunnen deze diffuse verontreinigingen zijn ontstaan door bijvoorbeeld atmosferische depositie of zijn geïmporteerd door grondverzet. Het is daarom voor drinkwaterbedrijven van belang te weten op welke wijze en termijn de uitspoeling van deze diffuse PFAS de grondwaterwinputten kan bedreigen PFAS-moleculen gedragen zich in de bodem anders dan andere verontreinigingen omdat het molecuul zowel hydrofobe als hydrofiele eigenschappen bezit. Hierdoor is er wetenschappelijk nog veel onbekend over het transport van PFAS door de ondergrond. Het BTO-project “PFAS in bodem” is gestart om - op basis van de huidige stand van de kennis - te bepalen welke inzichten in de condities voor uitspoeling van PFAS uit Nederlandse onverzadigde bodems opgedaan kunnen worden en wat die betekenen voor de bedreiging voor grondwaterwinningen. In dit onderzoek is verkend welke factoren van belang zijn voor de mogelijke hoeveelheid PFAS die uitspoelt uit de grond voor grondwaterwinningen en is er een eerste inschatting gemaakt van deze hoeveelheden op basis van beschikbare methoden. Specifiek zijn twee tools getest die gebruikt kunnen worden om PFAS-transport 1-D in de onverzadigde zone te simuleren: 1) de pythontool ‘PFAS LEACH screening tool’ die gebruik maakt van analytische oplossingen en 2) de numerieke modelcode ‘HYDRUS’, waar in versie 5 een PFAS-module is toegevoegd. Van deze tools is de toepasbaarheid verkend en is een simulatie uit de literatuur gereproduceerd om de werking te vergelijken. Vervolgens zijn verkennende simulaties uitgevoerd voor Nederlandse bodemtypen en hoeveelheden neerslagoverschot.

Wanneer er grondwaterverontreinigingen in het beïnvloedingsgebied van open bodemenergiesystemen (OBES) aanwezig zijn, zorgen transport- en mengprocessen ervoor dat de verontreiniging wordt verspreid. De plaatsing van OBES-bronnen in verontreinigde gebieden is daarom een risico op verminderde grondwaterkwaliteit in een groter gebied. Tegelijk beïnvloedt de wijze van plaatsing de energetische prestaties van de OBES. In dit onderzoek is daarom aan de hand van een casestudie de verspreiding van verontreiniging door OBES gekwantificeerd voor 2 toekomstscenario's; een 'Business as Usual' (BaU) scenario waarbij de bronlocaties de standaard plaatsingsregels volgen; en een thermisch geoptimaliseerd scenario met hoge dichtheid (HD) van OBES, met kleinere bron afstanden. Verder is onderzocht of er beheersmaatregelen kunnen worden geïdentificeerd om de verspreiding te beperken. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat verspreiding van verontreiniging (met worstcase condities) nauwelijks te voorkomen is in een gebied waar een grote vraag is naar OBES. De verspreiding is het sterkst in de HD-scenario's, maar in verhouding tot het verschil in totaal gepompte volume door de OBES verschilt de verspreiding echter niet wezenlijk van het BaU-scenario. Vroegtijdig beoordelen van de lokale verontreinigingssituatie en de juiste keuze van bronnen om beheersmaatregelen op toe te passen zijn de belangrijkste factoren die van invloed zijn om de verspreiding van de verontreiniging in OBES-gebieden te beperken.

Door de groeiende vraag naar duurzame energie neemt het aantal open bodemenergiesystemen (OBES) toe. Vooral in steden zijn er echter veel verontreinigingen, o.a. door industrialisering uit het verleden. Als daar OBES-installaties worden geplaatst, kan de verontreiniging zich verspreiden en verdunnen, doordat deze systemen gelijktijdig grondwater onttrekken en infiltreren. Dit is vooral het geval als de ondiepe aquifer wordt gebruikt voor toepassing van OBES. Omdat verspreiding en verdunning van verontreiniging niet gewenst is, is het van belang om de verspreidingsmechanismen te begrijpen en eventuele beheersmaatregelen te kennen.

Governments and companies have set high targets in avoiding CO2 emissions and reducing energy. Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) systems can contribute by overcoming the temporal mismatch between the availability of sustainable heat (during summer) and the demand for heat (during winter). Therefore, ATES is an increasingly popular technique; currently over 3000 low temperature ATES systems are operational in the Netherlands. Low-temperature ATES systems use heat pumps to allow the stored heat to be supplied at the required temperature for heating (usually around 40-50°C) and for cooling in summer. Although on average a conventional low-temperature ATES system produces 3-4 times lower CO2 emissions when compared to gas heating, the heat pumps still require substantial amounts of external electricity, causing over 60% of the remaining primary energy use. In the ATES triplet system, the temperatures in the hot and cold wells of an ATES system are increased and decreased respectively to match the required delivery temperatures and a third well is added at an intermediate temperature. With this strategy, other sources of sustainable heat and cooling capacity can supply the subsurface close to the temperatures required in the hot and the cold well. However, the return temperatures from the building systems do not conform with either of the hot or cold wells and an additional well is used to store water at the return temperature. Additional components are then required to supply the hot and cold wells (from the third well) by increasing the temperature in summer (e.g. solar collectors) and decreasing it in winter (e.g. dry coolers). In this study the feasibility of this concept is evaluated. Simulations and an economical evaluation show significant potential for triplet ATES with economic performance better than conventional ATES while the CO2 emissions are reduced by a factor of ten. A wide variety of well drilling techniques and well completion methods is used in the installation of dewatering and artificial recharge wells for the purpose of construction dewatering. The selection of the optimal well type is always a trade-off between the overall costs of well completion and development, the optimal well hydraulics of the well itself, the hydraulic impact of the well on its surroundings, and the required operational life span of the well. The present study provides an analytical framework that can be used by dewatering and drilling companies to quantify the contribution to head loss of typical dewatering and artificial-recharge well configurations. The analysis shows that the placement of partially penetrating wells in high-permeability layers could promote the use of quick and cheap installation of naturally developed wells using jetting or straight-flush rotary drilling. In high-permeability layers, such wells can be favorable over wells completed with filter pack, which require extensive well development to remove the fines from the filter cake layer. The amount of total head loss during discharge/recharge at a volumetric rate of 20 m3/h per meter of filter length, into or from a gravely aquifer layer, is reduced by factors of 3–4 while using naturally developed well types instead of well types completed with a filter pack that contains a filter cake layer due to borehole smearing.

Hoge temperatuur ondergrondse warmteopslag (HTO) kan potentieel een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan de verduurzaming van de gebouwde omgeving. Er zijn echter ook zorgen om de effecten op de chemische en microbiologische grondwaterkwaliteit. In een recent literatuuronderzoek is de stand van kennis op dat vlak geïnventariseerd. Op basis hiervan kan aankomend praktijkonderzoek gerichter uitgevoerd worden.

Under certain flow conditions, fluid flow through porous media starts to deviate from the linear relationship between flow rate and hydraulic gradient. At such flow conditions, Darcy’s law for laminar flow can no longer be assumed and nonlinear relationships are required to predict flow in the Forchheimer regime. To date, most of the nonlinear flow behavior data is obtained from flow experiments on packed beds of uniformly graded granular materials (Cu = d60/d10 < 2) with various average grain sizes, ranging from sands to cobbles. However, natural deposits of sand and gravel in the subsurface could have a wide variety of grain size distributions. Therefore, in the present study we investigated the impact of variable grain size distributions on the extent of nonlinear flow behavior through 18 different packed beds of natural sand and gravel deposits, as well as composite filter sand and gravel mixtures within the investigated range of uniformity (2.0 < Cu < 17.35) and porosity values (0.23 < n < 0.36). Increased flow resistance is observed for the sand and gravel with high Cu values and low porosity values. The present study shows that for granular material with wider grain size distributions (Cu > 2), the d10 instead of the average grain size (d50) as characteristic pore length should be used. Ergun constants A and B with values of 63.1 and 1.72, respectively, resulted in a reasonable prediction of the Forchheimer coefficients for the investigated granular materials.

During construction dewatering, artificial recharge with wells might be required to discharge the pumped groundwater. On the one hand, artificial recharge wells must be placed as close as possible to the construction site to limit the above-ground space for the dewatering infrastructure and the transport costs, while on the other hand, the distance from the dewatering site must be considerably large to reduce the hydraulic impact and minimize overall pumping costs. Commonly, artificial recharge wells are completed with filter screens that penetrate large portions of the aquifer. The present study investigates the efficiency and potential of artificial recharge with partially penetrating wells (PPWs; filter length of 1 m) in heterogeneous aquifers. This was done by conducting scenario modeling of simple dewatering schemes with one abstraction well and one artificial recharge well, as well as with experimental field tests. In these field tests, artificial recharge on a fully penetrating well (FPW), as well as on a PPW screened at a layer of relatively high permeability (300 m/day), is explored. The present study shows that the use of recharge PPWs screened at depth in high-permeability layers of the aquifer minimize the hydraulic impact at the dewatering site. Scenario modeling shows that recharge PPWs can be installed much closer to the dewatering site than FPWs. Assessment of the optimal screen depth of the PPW, as well as the mutual distance between the wells, requires a proper consideration of the vertical variability in the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer.

Door de hogere opslagtemperaturen heeft hoge temperatuur opslag (HTO) een aantal belangrijke voordelen ten opzichte van reguliere open lage temperatuur bodemenergiesystemen (WKO) en kan het daarom mogelijk een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan de verduurzaming van de gebouwde omgeving. Echter, er zijn ook zorgen om de effecten op de grondwatersamenstelling, welke zowel een risico kunnen vormen voor de grondwaterkwaliteit als voor het operationele functioneren van HTO systemen. Deze zorgen hebben er mede toe geleid dat HTO nog maar weinig is toegepast, zowel Nederland als wereldwijd. Bij de verdere uitrol van HTO is het dus van belang dat dit hand-in-hand gebeurd met gedegen onderzoek naar de effecten op de grondwatersamenstelling. In dat kader was het doel van het in dit rapport gepresenteerde literatuuronderzoek om op basis van beschikbare Nederlandse en internationale onderzoeksresultaten de ‘state-of-the-art’ inzichten in de effecten van ondergrondse warmteopslag op de grondwaterkwaliteit te beschrijven, en om resterende kennislacunes te benoemen en prioriteren. Hierbij lag de focus expliciet op de door de temperatuur veroorzaakte effecten (in tegenstelling tot andere effecten die ook bij reguliere WKO zouden kunnen optreden).

Dit rapport is onderdeel van het WINDOW project en richt zich op hoe opslagcondities (temperatuur, opslagvolumes, geohydrologie en bronlocatie) de prestaties en thermische effecten van ondergrondse warmteopslag (ook wel Hoge Temperatuur Opslag, HTO)1 beïnvloeden. Het doel van dit onderzoek is om generieke inzichten te verkrijgen uit een representatieve range aan condities ontleend aan numerieke simulaties voor de verkenningen in WINDOW. Het onderzoek in dit werkpakket richt zich op de volgende vragen: - Hoe is de terugwinefficiëntie van de individuele bronnen en het warmteopslagsysteem als geheel gerelateerd aan de opslagcondities? - Welke optimalisaties zijn er mogelijk bij het geohydrologisch ontwerp van ondergrondse warmteopslag, gericht op rendementsverbetering, kostenbesparing en risico beperking? - Hoe verspreidt de warmte die verloren gaat uit een HTO zich in (de omgeving van) het opslagpakket en hoe resulteert dit in een temperatuurverandering van de ondergrond? De simulaties voor de verschillende verkenningen van WINDOW zijn gedaan met het numerieke grondwatermodel SEAWATv4. Omdat voor iedere verkenning een (ander) aantal varianten zijn bepaald,is er een grote range aan verschillende condities gesimuleerd. Er zijn verkenningen uitgevoerd voor de volgende zes locaties: Heerhugowaard, Sittard/Geleen, Rotterdam, Leeuwarden, Den Haag en Delft2. In totaal zijn er 26 varianten doorgerekend met het axisymmetrische model. Voor iedere locatie is er ook één 3D simulatie gedaan.

Open bodemenergiesystemen dragen bij aan de overgang naar duurzame energie en kunnen bijna overal in Nederland worden toegepast. Lokale ondergrondse condities en systeemeigenschappen bepalen echter de efficiëntie van het systeem. Er is nog geen gedetailleerde kaart van de invloed van deze eigenschappen op het rendement van bodemenergiesystemen beschikbaar. In dit artikel wordt het verlies in terugwinefficiëntie door geleiding en achtergrondstroming geanalyseerd. Hiermee wordt voor elke plek in Nederland inzichtelijk met welke van deze verliezen rekening moet worden gehouden bij het ontwerpen van bodemenergiesystemen.

High Temperature Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (HT-ATES) is a technology where groundwater of up to 90 ˚C is stored in the subsurface which is used as a source of heat for spatial heating. By utilizing high temperatures, the use of a fossil-fuel heat pump as in low temperature (< 25˚C) ATES is excluded. Before realizing HT-ATES, a basic framework of the storage specific and site-specific hydrogeological conditions that effect the thermal recovery efficiency and thermal spreading of heat in the subsurface is needed. This study has provides a part of such framework by the hand of numerical simulations, specifically looking at the impact of ambient groundwater flow (AGF) on HT-ATES systems in scenarios with the presence of an overlying aquifer. Additionally, theoretical interpretations of the results help to explain the interaction between various processes modelled. The results show that for HT-ATES systems in sites with ambient groundwater flow, thermal recovery efficiencies alter slightly due to the interaction between significant density-driven flow and ambient groundwater flow. However, the trend in ambient groundwater flow losses, where losses increase when decreasing the storage size or increase the AGF velocity, is similar to that of LT-ATES. Therefore, analysis whether AGF losses play a significant role at a certain site can still be performed with the analytical formula of Boemendal & Hartog 2018 that calculates efficiency losses due to ambient groundwater flow. In terms of spatial spreading, ambient groundwater flow causes for an increase in spreading in direction of the flow and increases when utilizing a larger storage aquifer. Additionally, flow in the storage aquifer results in more conduction losses to the overlying aquifer. The presence of an overlying aquifer causes for an increase in thermal spreading in vertical direction when significant density driven flow is present. De diepe ondergrond wordt voor allerlei activiteiten gebruikt. Met name toepassing van geothermie neemt de laatste jaren een grote vlucht. Een paar jaar geleden maakte men zich veel zorgen over de gevolgen van de mogelijke winning van schaliegas voor het milieu en vooral ook voor de kwaliteit van grondwater. Daarom is een project opgestart waarin technische en juridische aspecten van schaliegaswinning en de milieu-impact hiervan zijn onderzocht. Hoewel schaliegaswinning inmiddels uit beeld is verdwenen in Nederland, zijn de resultaten van dit onderzoek van groot belang voor allerlei andere activiteiten in de ondergrond, die op steeds grotere schaal plaatsvinden.

De energietransitie is een enorme opgave die direct voortvloeit uit een van de sustainable development goals: ‘Affordable and clean energy’. Onderdeel van de opgave is verwarming en koeling van de gebouwde omgeving. Er moeten 7 miljoen woningen, utiliteitsgebouwen en andere objecten worden voorzien van duurzame warmte- en koudebronnen.

The reactive transport impacts of a multiple partially-penetrating well (MPPW-)ASR system in a brackish, heterogeneous coastal aquifer are complex due to geochemical heterogeneities, cation-exchange, mineral dissolution, and redox processes, as well as complex fluid flow induced by density-differences between the injection water and ambient water. To understand the impact of relevant processes during MPPW-ASR, a reactive transport model was setup based on geochemical observations to evaluate the long-term impacts on the injected freshwater and the surrounding brackish water, which is diluted partially by the freshwater. It was found that the major impacts on the injection water during the initial cycles of MPPW-ASR were cation-exchange, Fe-Mn-carbonate dissolution, pyrite oxidation, and MnO2 reduction by Fe2+, whereas in later cycles the water composition was impacted by pyrite oxidation, trace metal sorption, oxidation of Fe2+ and Mn2+, and the reduction of MnO2 by Fe2+. The surrounding brackish water is diluted by the injected freshwater and forms a water type which is depleted in Na+ and enriched in HCO3- in the initial cycles but becomes enriched in Na+ and Cl- in later cycles. This water type is then transported away from the ASR-well, as well as towards the shallower intervals of the aquifer, maintaining its composition. The results of this project indicate that redox processes still affect the composition of the injected freshwater and the surrounding brackish water around the freshwater bubble is an undesirable water-type that could potentially harm the quality of the injection water.

In order to create a sustainable planet, human kind has set ambitious goals to reduce CO2 emissions in the near future. About 40% of the global energy consumption is used in heating and cooling in the built environment and the bulk of this energy is produced from fossil fuel burning. Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) is a sustainable way for space heating and cooling. Surplus heat is stored in a subsurface groundwater aquifer during summer and reproduced in winter when heat demand is higher. Interest is aroused in High Temperature ATES (HT-ATES), where injection temperatures are higher (>25oC) than in regular ATES (<25oC). However, injection of warm water in a colder (~12oC) subsurface may thermally affect surrounding layers and induce processes that reduce the thermal recovery efficiency of the HT-ATES system. This research aims to find the processes and dominant hydrogeological and operational parameters controlling 1) the thermal effects of High Temperature ATES on overlying layers and 2) the thermal recovery efficiency of a HT-ATES system. To this end, and to provide more insight in the thermal transport in HT-ATES systems, a numerical 2D axisymmetric SEAWATv4 model was built to perform a sensitivity analysis around a reference Case Study scenario. The results showed that the thermal impact on an overlying aquifer mainly depends on the water injection temperature and the thickness of the cap layer that separates the overlying aquifer from the injection aquifer. The 1D steady state heat conduction theory provides an analytical solution that gives a good first order approximation of the nearly linear vertical temperature distribution in the overlying layers that can be expected on the long term. Density driven flow in the injection aquifer resulted in a larger radial extent of thermal impact on the overlying layers. Bij de productie van drinkwater uit grondwater is vrijwel altijd verwijdering van ijzer en mangaan nodig. Vaak worden hiervoor zandfilters gebruikt, maar ook ondergrondse ontijzering rond de winput is mogelijk. Door beter begrip van de optimale condities kan het samenspel van verwijderingsprocessen verbeterd worden. Modellering van deze processen is daarbij een belangrijk hulpmiddel gebleken. Enkele voorbeelden van Vitens-locaties tonen de mogelijkheden om de drinkwaterproductie robuuster en goedkoper te laten verlopen.

Onderzoek van KWR toonde aan dat klimaatverandering invloed heeft op diverse facetten van de toekomstige drinkwatervoorziening. Voorbeelden zijn een toename van enkele organische microverontreinigingen in de grote rivieren, mogelijke problemen met de waterkwaliteit in de stedelijke omgeving als gevolg van hogere bodemtemperaturen en een toename van de watervraag. Ook is gekeken naar maatregelen. Zo is onderzocht welke typen bodempassagesystemen kunnen worden gebruikt om de verwijdering van organische microverontreinigingen te verbeteren. Daarnaast is een model ontwikkeld waarmee de dynamische ontwikkeling van ecosystemen (en ecosysteemdiensten zoals grondwateraanvulling) kan worden berekend.

Uit een vijf jaar Bedrijfstakonderzoek (BTO) blijkt dat klimaatverandering de drinkwatervoorziening op allerlei manieren gaat beïnvloeden. Vele effecten zullen zich voordoen, van hogere vervuiling van oppervlaktewater tot een hogere temperatuur in het leidingnet. Met dit onderzoek is de drinkwatersector beter in staat om tijdig maatregelen te nemen, en om kansen te benutten.

Aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) can be an important technique to help meet the increasing freshwater demand in coastal areas. It involves the infiltration and storage of freshwater in a suitable aquifer through a well during times when water is available and its recovery from the same well during times of need. Conventional ASR with a fully penetrating well (FPW-ASR) is generally unviable in brackish aquifers due to the buoyancy force on stored freshwater. However, field pilots suggest that dedicated multiple partially penetrating wells (MPPW-ASR) have the potential to increase the recovery efficiency (RE) of ASR in brackish aquifers. The present study focused on validating and quantifying this improved recovery with use of a 2D lab-scale sandbox model, complemented by numerical SEAWAT simulations. A representative numerical 3D field-scale model with a normal fully penetrating well was able to validate the reduced RE of FPW-ASR with a lower dimensionless D-parameter, i.e. with a larger relative influence of buoyancy. The RE also reduced with a higher ratio of injection radius to aquifer height (r/H), i.e. with a longer duration of infiltration. The latter observation contradicts previous studies, possibly due to numerical dispersion, and requires further research. Nevertheless, simulating ASR scenarios with different aquifer properties and operational parameters can result in the same RE, provided that D, r/H, and the relative durations of the ASR phases are constant for a given grid discretization. This enabled downscaling of numerical ASR scenarios from field-settings to lab-settings. The improved RE of freshwater using MPPW-ASR instead of FPW-ASR in brackish aquifers was confirmed by the numerical 3D-field scale model. However, the RE of MPPW-ASR was not necessarily optimised because of the simplified operation in this study. When MPPW-ASR is optimised for a specific scenario, the RE can be further ameliorated. Bodemenergiesystemen worden veelvuldig toegepast om energie te besparen. De warmtepomp van zulke systemen gebruikt echter nog altijd veel elektriciteit, waardoor voor grootschalige toepassing ook grootschalige netverzwaring nodig is. Daarom is het voor de verduurzaming van de gebouwde omgeving belangrijk om alternatieve duurzame technieken voor verwarming en koeling van gebouwen te vinden. Het WKO-‘triplet’-systeem vermijdt elektriciteitsverbruik door de warmtepomp door warmte en koude op het gewenste temperatuurniveau in te vangen en in de bodem op te slaan met (bijvoorbeeld) zonnecollectoren en droge koelers. Het primair energieverbruik van een tripletsysteem is ongeveer 5% van een conventioneel systeem.

In 2015 werd Pieter J. Stuyfzand benoemd tot bijzonder hoogleraar Chemische Hydrogeologie aan de faculteit Civiele Techniek en Geowetenschappen van de Technische Universiteit Delft. Anderhalf jaar later, op 17 maart jongstleden, gaf hij zijn intreerede met de uit elementen van het periodiek systeem en een rebus opgebouwde titel "SPEuReNNaAr SPoReN In G(a-A)rONdWAtEr". Ruim 100 gasten bezorgde hij daarmee een boeiende en inspirerende middag die volgens traditie werd afgesloten met een borrel. Vooruitlopend en als aanvulling op het boekje praten wij met dit verslag de thuisblijvers bij.

Ten behoeve van de energietransitie neemt de behoefte aan duurzame warmte en daarmee het aantal geothermiesystemen in Nederland toe. Hierbij wordt in toenemende mate gekeken naar de stedelijke omgeving. Ook voor de wijk Hanzeland in Zwolle wordt verkend of een aantal kantoren en scholen van geothermische van warmte kan worden voorzien. Vanwege de nabijheid van de drinkwaterwinning Engelse Werk en de aanwezigheid van de strategische grondwaterreserve Salland Diep (boringsvrije zone), is een verkenning naar mogelijke risico’s van een geothermiesysteem voor de het grondwater uitgevoerd.

Aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) is a technology to sustainably provide space heating and cooling. Particularly in The Netherlands the number of ATES systems has grown rapidly in the past decade, often with the (re)development of urban areas. To meet objectives for greenhouse gas emission reduction the number of ATES systems is expected and required to further rise in future both in The Netherlands and elsewhere. To evaluate the lessons learned and the role of practical aspects in the Dutch development of ATES systems, in this study the geohydrological conditions and well characteristics for 331 (~15% of total) Dutch ATES systems are evaluated with respect to optimal well design for maximal thermal energy recovery. The study shows that well design of most (70%) ATES systems is suboptimal. The well design criteria that have been used thus far in practice, focus on allowing maximum flow/capacity, disregarding the effect of groundwater flow on efficiency and the effect of well design on subsurface space use. Instead, well design should be based on a more representative value for the storage volume that takes into account . Based on monitoring data and analysis of variations and uncertainties of the actual storage volume, a guideline is defined to reflect these in the storage volume used for design. Also a guideline for well design is introduced that accounts for both conduction and dispersion losses as well as advection losses in case of high ambient groundwater flow., Water Resources

Warmtenetten maken de distributie van industriële rest- of duurzame warmte mogelijk. Warmtevraag en –aanbod sluiten in de tijd echter niet goed aan. Zo is de vraag naar warmte het grootst in de winter, terwijl productie van industriële restwarmte constant is en die van duurzame zonnewarmte variabel en vooral in de zomer plaatsvindt. Warmteopslag kan de verbindende factor vormen tussen aanbod en vraag. Op de schaal van warmtenetten zijn hiervoor grote opslagvolumes nodig om afstemming tussen vraag en aanbod over seizoenen heen te kunnen realiseren. Ondergrondse zandlagen bieden meer dan voldoende ruimte voor de realisatie van deze benodigde grootschalige warmteopslag. Deze ondergrondse warmteopslag kan de piekvraag naar warmte duurzaam invullen en als back-up voorziening worden ingezet. Hiermee draagt ondergrondse warmteopslag bij om warmtenetten duurzamer, robuuster en toekomstbestendiger te maken.

Als je de landelijke cijfers van het CBS erop naslaat is de bijdrage van de ondergrond aan de energietransitie op dit moment betrekkelijk laag. Echter een duurzame energievoorziening wordt een steeds belangrijkere factor voor het vestigingsklimaat voor bewoners en een “license to operate” voor bedrijven. Dit vraagt om maatwerk en vooruitplannen. De provincie Overijssel liet haar huidige ruimtelijk beleid en energieprogramma tegen het licht houden en concludeerde dat de Omgevingsvisie de juiste handvatten biedt, maar dat voor specifieke toepassingen wel meer maatwerk nodig is.

This study aims to assess the various aspects of quantifying in-situ leaching (ISL) of copper in porphyry rock through numerical modelling. The first part involves a detailed review of physical and chemical processes that are expected to affect the leaching rate of copper. For this purpose, chalcopyrite was selected as representative leachable copper sulphide. Three alteration phases of hypogene copper deposits and supergene enriched porphyry rock have the highest potential to be economical ore bodies. Various lixiviant systems are discussed of which hydrochloric acid (HCL) was selected to be most suitable leaching agent for the purpose of the initial development of a modelling framework. Transport of the injected lixiviant relies on sufficiently permeable fractures, due the naturally low permeability of crystalline rock. Fracture stimulation is considered essential to establish a connected fracture network which would also develop an increased reaction surface area between the lixiviant and the target mineral. The second part of the study integrates all relevant hydrodynamic and chemical processes and parameters into a reactive transport modelling framework. A range of conceptual modelling scenarios were developed and translated into illustrative numerical models. The considered cases were guided by the analysis of mineral maps that were developed from high resolution chemical analyses of samples for porphyry rock deposits. Simulations were performed at the cm-scale under consideration of physical and chemical heterogeneity. The impact of a hydraulic fracture was considered in which predominant solute transport occurs through advection. In contrast solute migration in the adjacent matrix was controlled by diffusion. Model variants were defined to investigate the sensitivity of copper extraction rates to selected physical parameters, such as different orientation of the hydraulic fracture in relation to the vein and porosity variations according porosity measurement
