Abstract

A major obstacle to understanding high-Tc cuprates is that superconductivity precludes observing normal-state properties at low temperatures. One prime example is the normal-state spin susceptibility: although its decrease upon cooling far above Tc typifies pseudogap behavior, its behavior at low temperatures is generally unknown. Here, our measurements in high magnetic fields expose the spin susceptibility of YBa2Cu3Oy down to low temperatures. Even though superconductivity is suppressed by the field, we uncover two thermally-activated contributions alongside a residual susceptibility at T=0 due to gapless excitations. We relate these two distinct gaps to short-range charge-density waves and to the formation of spin singlets similar to those found in certain quantum spin systems. These phenomena thus collectively contribute to the pseudogap in the spin susceptibility at low temperature, supplementing short-lived antiferromagnetism known to initiate pseudogap behavior at high temperatures. We therefore propose that the pseudogap should be regarded as a composite property.

Abstract

We present nuclear magnetic (NMR) and quadrupole (NQR) resonance and magnetization data in the normal state of the topological crystalline superconductor LaNiGa2. We find no evidence of significant magnetic fluctuations or enhanced paramagnetism. These results suggest that the time-reversal symmetry breaking previously reported in the superconducting state of this material is not driven by strong electron correlations.

Abstract

We have performed $^{115}$In-NMR spectroscopy for Ni$_{2}$InSbO$_6$ with corundum-related crystal structure to reveal magnetic structures that develop in high magnetic fields. At low fields Ni$_{2}$InSbO$_6$ shows a helical magnetic order with a long wavelength because of its chiral and polar crystal structure. The field-induced magnetic state was not investigated by microscopic experiment because an extremely high magnetic field is required to modify the antiferromagnetically coupled helical structure. From the analysis of our $^{115}$In-NMR spectra obtained at high magnetic fields, we confirm that the canted antiferromagnetic structure appears in fields applied in the $[110]$ direction and the propagation vector of magnetic helix is rotated toward the field direction for fields in the $[001]$ direction. Abstract

The mechanism of unconventional superconductivity, such as high-temperature-cuprate, Fe-based, and heavy-fermion superconductors, has been studied as a central issue in condensed-matter physics. Spin fluctuations, instead of phonons, are considered to be responsible for the formation of Cooper pairs, and many efforts have been made to confirm this mechanism experimentally. Although a qualitative consensus seems to have been obtained, experimental confirmation has not yet been achieved. This is owing to a lack of the quantitative comparison between theory and experiments. Here, we show a semi-quantitative comparison between the superconducting-transition temperature ($T_{\rm SC}$) and spin fluctuations derived from the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment on the ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor UCoGe, in which the FM fluctuations and superconductivity are tunable by external fields. The enhancement and abrupt suppression of $T_{\rm SC}$ by applied fields, as well as the pressure variation of $T_{\rm SC}$ around the FM criticality are well understood by the change in the FM fluctuations on the basis of the single-band spin-triplet theoretical formalism. The present comparisons strongly support the theoretical formalism of spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity, particularly in UCoGe., Comment: 10 pages, 8 pages. To be published in Phys. Rev. B

Abstract

In order to identify the mechanism responsible for the formation of charge-density waves (CDW) in cuprate superconductors, it is important to understand which aspects of the CDW's microscopic structure are generic and which are material-dependent. Here, we show that, at the local scale probed by NMR, long-range CDW order in YBa2Cu3Oy is unidirectional with a commensurate period of three unit cells (lambda = 3b), implying that the incommensurability found in X-ray scattering is ensured by phase slips (discommensurations). Furthermore, NMR spectra reveal a predominant oxygen character of the CDW with an out-of-phase relationship between certain lattice sites but no specific signature of a secondary CDW with lambda = 6b associated with a putative pair-density wave. These results shed light on universal aspects of the cuprate CDW. In particular, its spatial profile appears to generically result from the interplay between an incommensurate tendency at long length scales, possibly related to properties of the Fermi surface, and local commensuration effects, due to electron-electron interactions or lock-in to the lattice., Comment: Original submission (revised version available upon request)

7. Anisotropic magnetic excitations from single-chirality antiferromagnetic state in Ca-kapellasite

Abstract

We present a $^{35}$Cl NMR study for spin $S=1/2$ perfect kagome antiferromagnet Ca-kapellasite (CaCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}\cdot$0.6H$_{2}$O) with a magnetic transition at $T^{\ast}=7.2$ K. The static magnetic structure in the ground state has been determined to be a chirality-ordered $Q=0$ state, which is selected by a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The low-energy magnetic excitations in the ordered state are investigated by the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate measurement. We detect a weakly temperature dependent contribution in the magnetic fluctuations perpendicular to the kagome plane in addition to the dispersive spin-wave contribution in the kagome plane. The low-energy magnetic excitations from the coplanar spin structure are attributed to the zero mode originating from the flat band in this kagome antiferromagnet., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The valence orders at $T_a=125$ K and $T_b=105$ K in the cubic compound YbPd have been investigated by $^{105}$Pd-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Significant decrease in the density of states at the Fermi energy below $T_a$ is evident from the measurement of nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$, suggesting that the instabilities of Fermi surface are associated with the transitions. Moreover we observed the unusual evolution of low-energy fluctuations toward the valence transition at $T_a$ behind its drastic first-order nature. Abstract

The value of the upper critical field Hc2, a fundamental characteristic of the superconducting state, has been subject to strong controversy in high-Tc copper-oxides. Since the issue has been tackled almost exclusively by macroscopic techniques so far, there is a clear need for local-probe measurements. Here, we use 17O NMR to measure the spin susceptibility $\chi_{spin}$ of the CuO2 planes at low temperature in charge ordered YBa2Cu3Oy. We find that $\chi_{spin}$ increases (most likely linearly) with magnetic field H and saturates above field values ranging from 20 to 40 T. This result is consistent with Hc2 values claimed by G. Grissonnanche et al. [Nat. Commun. 5, 3280 (2014)] and with the interpretation that the charge-density-wave (CDW) reduces Hc2 in underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy. Furthermore, the absence of marked deviation in $\chi_{spin}(H)$ at the onset of long-range CDW order indicates that this Hc2 reduction and the Fermi-surface reconstruction are primarily rooted in the short-range CDW order already present in zero field, not in the field-induced long-range CDWorder. Abstract

Observing how electronic states in solids react to a local symmetry breaking provides insight into their microscopic nature. A striking example is the formation of bound states when quasiparticles are scattered off defects. This is known to occur, under specific circumstances, in some metals and superconductors but not, in general, in the charge-density-wave (CDW) state. Here, we report the unforeseen observation of bound states when a magnetic field quenches superconductivity and induces long-range CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$. Bound states indeed produce an inhomogeneous pattern of the local density of states $N(E_F)$ that leads to a skewed distribution of Knight shifts which is detected here through an asymmetric profile of $^{17}$O NMR lines. We argue that the effect arises most likely from scattering off defects in the CDW state, which provides a novel case of disorder-induced bound states in a condensed-matter system and an insightful window into charge ordering in the cuprates.

Abstract

We have investigated the generation region of intermittent plasma structures, which could be due to the blob-like cross field transport around the divertor simulation experimental module (D-module) in the tandem mirror device GAMMA 10/PDX. A positive skewness of the ion saturation current was clearly seen when the electrode of the movable probe was located at the radial edge and just in front of the entrance limiter of the D-module. Fourier analysis and conditional averaging clarified that positive spikes intermittently appeared in the same region. This is the first indication that the phenomenon producing the high-density isolated plasma structures occurred in the upstream of the D-module. A negative skewness was also found, and large amplitude fluctuation was detected between regions showing positive and negative skewness. Furthermore, this and light emission fluctuations become stronger during the transient state from attached to detached state on the V-shaped target.

Abstract

Meeting time is defined as the time for which two orbits approach each other within distance $\epsilon$ in phase space. We show that the distribution of the meeting time is exponential in $(p_1,...,p_k)$-Bernoulli systems. In the limit of $\epsilon\to0$, the distribution converges to exp(-\alpha\tau), where $\tau$ is the meeting time normalized by the average. Abstract

Effects of non-resonant photoproductions arising from two different $\pi NN$ couplings are investigated in the $\gamma N\to\pi\pi N$ reaction. We find that the pseudoscalar (PS) $\pi NN$ coupling is generally preferable to the pseudovector (PV) $\pi NN$ coupling and particularly the total cross sections are successfully described by the model with the PS $\pi NN$ coupling. We construct the formula for the photonuclear total absorption cross section using the projection method and the unitarity relation. Our treatment is very effective when interference effects in the absorption processes on a nucleon are strong. The disappearance of the peak around the position of the $D_{13}$ resonance in the nuclear photoabsorption can be explained with the cooperative effect of the interference in two-pion production processes,the Fermi motion, the collision broadenings of $\Delta$ and $N^*$, and the pion distortion in the nuclear medium. Abstract

A divertor simulation experimental module (D-module) in the tandem mirror GAMMA 10/PDX was used for the study of plasma detachment. In previous studies, it was difficult to measure far-upstream plasma parameters in the D-module, and only electrostatic probes on the target plate were used to perform electron temperature and density measurements. To study the detached plasma structure, a Thomson scattering (TS) system and a microwave interferometer system have been installed to measure the inside plasma parameters of the D-module, and a movable electrostatic probe has been placed at the inlet of the D-module to measure the inlet plasma density and temperature. The TS system in the central cell observed the electron temperature and density of the core plasma simultaneously. These measurements revealed the entire density and temperature structure from the core plasma to the divertor plate. The line average electron density measured by the microwave interferometer showed a rollover behavior during detachment. The results indicated that the ionization region was located around the center of the D-module, and it appears to move upstream along the axis.

Abstract

The transition of a detached to attached plasma experiment has been performed in GAMMA 10/PDX by applying an additional plasma heating pulse of electron cyclotron heating (ECH). In a plasma detachment experiment, a short pulse (25 ms) of ECH was applied at the east plug-cell to examine the effects of electron heating on the plasma parameters in the D-module. It was found that the ion flux increased significantly during ECH injection. In the ECH injection period, the ion flux increased with the increasing impurity injection, which indicates the impurity ion components are enhanced by ionization in the D-module due to the application of ECH. During ECH injection period, the increase of the ion flux near the corner of the target plate shows a clear dependence on the gas species. The 2D visible emission has been captured by the high-speed camera and a bright emission near the corner of the target has been observed. The spectroscopic measurement in the D-module shows that the impurity ion emission increases remarkably during ECH injection. These results indicate the detached plasma change to the attached state.

We present a Cl-35 NMR study for the spin S = 1/2 perfect kagome antiferromagnet Ca-kapellasite [CaCu3(OH)(6)Cl-2 center dot 0.6H(2)O] with a magnetic transition at T* = 7.2 K. The static magnetic structure in the ground state has been determined to be a chirality-ordered Q = 0 state, which is selected by a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The low-energy magnetic excitations in the ordered state are investigated by a nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate measurement. We detect a weakly temperature-dependent contribution in the magnetic fluctuations perpendicular to the kagome plane in addition to the dispersive spin-wave contribution in the kagome plane. The low-energy magnetic excitations from the coplanar spin structure are attributed to the zero mode originating from the flat band in this kagome antiferromagnet.

Abstract

The number of samples is a major issue when estimating the mean herbage mass of grazed paddocks. The aim of this study was to assess the number of samples required for accurate visual estimation of mean herbage mass in relation to the herbage mass heterogeneity and size of paddocks. Data were collected across scales of space and time (273 sampling events) from paddocks on Campos grasslands in Uruguay, using the visual estimation technique. The mean herbage mass of the paddocks ranged from 270 to 6350 kg of dry matter (DM) per hectare with coefficient of variation (CV) of 0.13 to 1.26. Twenty-four events representing four levels of herbage mass hetero- geneity (CV = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 1.0) × three levels of paddock size (small, 5–13 ha; medium, 41–67 ha; large, 100–140 ha) were chosen (two replicates per group), and analyzed for the probability that the estimation error exceeded 10% of the mean (10% error probability) using the bootstrap technique. The number of samples required for controlling the 10% error probability below 0.1 increased gradually from 50 to 150 per paddock as the CV increased from 0.3 to 0.7, then sharply to 350 until the CV increased to 1.0, with no effect of paddock size. Taking account of the distribution of CV (< 0.7 in nearly 80% of the events), we propose a general recommendation to take a minimum of 150 samples per paddock for accurate estimation of mean herbage mass in Campos grasslands irrespective of the size of paddocks.

Abstract

The calculations of total and binding energies of group IV tetrachlorides MCl4(M = Ti, Zr, Hf, and element 104, Rf) are performed using the four-component fully relativistic density functional method. The calculations show the binding energies to be in good agreement with thermochemical dissociation energies obtained via the Born-Haber. The method demonstrates a predictive power, which is important for further applications in the area of the heavy element compounds.

Abstract

In many species, the offspring of related parents suffer reduced reproductive success, a phenomenon known as inbreeding depression. In humans, the importance of this effect has remained unclear, partly because reproduction between close relatives is both rare and frequently associated with confounding social factors. Here, using genomic inbreeding coefficients (FROH) for >1.4 million individuals, we show that FROH is significantly associated (p < 0.0005) with apparently deleterious changes in 32 out of 100 traits analysed. These changes are associated with runs of homozygosity (ROH), but not with common variant homozygosity, suggesting that genetic variants associated with inbreeding depression are predominantly rare. The effect on fertility is striking: FROH equivalent to the offspring of first cousins is associated with a 55% decrease [95% CI 44–66%] in the odds of having children. Finally, the effects of FROH are confirmed within full-sibling pairs, where the variation in FROH is independent of all environmental confounding.
