Dollar spot (DS) is a destructive fungal disease impacting almost all warm- and cool-season turfgrasses worldwide. Multiple fungal species in the genus Clarireedia are causal agents of DS. Here, we present whole-genome assemblies of nine fungal isolates in the genus Clarireedia, including four species (C. paspali, C. hainanense, C. jacksonii, and C. monteithiana) causing DS on seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Sw.), creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.), and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) in China. This work provides valuable baseline genomic data to support further research and management of DS pathogens on turfgrasses.

In this study, one-dimensional detonations in ammonia/hydrogen-air mixtures are numerically investigated by solving the fully compressible Navier-Stokes equations with detailed chemistry. Pulsating instabilities with single-mode are observed during the detonation wave propagation, accompanied by periodic coupling and decoupling of the lead shock wave and the reactive front. The ratio between driver pressure and initial pressure determines the overdrive degree and thus the oscillatory mode of detonation for a premixture with certain composition. The effects of hydrogen dilution and mixture equivalence ratio on pulsating detonations are also examined under a constant driver pressure. The growing hydrogen fraction in fuel blends significantly increases the oscillation frequency. In addition, the pulsating detonation frequency rises with increasing equivalence ratio under fuel-lean conditions, peaks under stoichiometric conditions, and falls under fuel-rich conditions as the equivalence ratio increases further. Evolutions of reactants, main intermediate radicals, and products are analysed in both fuel-lean and fuel-rich conditions. A chemical explosive mode analysis further confirms the highly-autoignitive nature of the mixture in the induction zone between reaction front and shock front where thermal diffusion plays a negligible role.

Thermal runaway (TR) is one of the challenging problems in the safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The monitoring and early warning of TR events, the analysis and modeling of TR mechanisms, and the control of TR are crucial in battery safety research. This review first analyzes the three abuse factors. The identification and analysis of the characteristic temperatures in TR, including the onset temperature of self-heating, the initiation temperature of TR, and the maximum temperature of the TR are reviewed and analyzed. The heat of internal side reactions (ISRs) comes from the separate decomposition, oxidation or mutual reactions of solid electrolyte interphase, positive electrolyte interphase, positive and negative active materials, and electrolyte, which induce the gradual development of the battery towards TR. The ISR mechanism, thermodynamic and reaction kinetic characteristics are reviewed in detail.

Evolution of fuel droplet evaporation zone and its interaction with the propagating flame front are studied in this work. A general theory is developed to describe the evolutions of flame propagation speed, flame temperature, droplet evaporation onset and completion locations in ignition and propagation of spherical flames. The influences of liquid droplet mass loading, heat exchange coefficient (or evaporation rate) and Lewis number on spherical spray flame ignition are studied. Two flame regimes are considered, i.e., heterogeneous and homogeneous flames, based on the mixture condition near the flame front. The results indicate that the spray flame trajectories are considerably affected by the ignition energy addition. The critical condition for successful ignition for the fuel-rich mixture is coincidence of inner and outer flame balls from igniting kernel and propagating flame. The flame balls always exist in homogeneous mixtures, indicating that ignition failure and critical successful events occur only in purely gaseous mixture. The fuel droplets have limited effects on minimum ignition energy, which however increases monotonically with the Lewis number. Moreover, flame kernel originates from heterogeneous mixtures due to the initially dispersed droplets near the spark. The evaporative heat loss in the burned and unburned zones of homogeneous and heterogeneous spray flames is also evaluated, and the results show that for the failed flame kernels, evaporative heat loss behind and before the flame front first increases and then decreases. The evaporative heat loss before the flame front generally increases, although non-monotonicity exists, when the flame is successfully ignited and propagate outwardly. For heterogeneous flames, the ratio of the heat loss from the burned zone to the total one decreases as the flame expands.

Spark ignition of ethanol droplet/vapor/air mixture is studied with a Eulerian-Eulerian method and detailed chemical mechanism. The flame kernel-droplet interaction is quantified with an evaporation completion front (ECF). Two categories of spray flames can hence be defined based on the relative location between the ECF and flame front, i.e., homogeneous and heterogeneous spray flames. An element-based equivalence ratio (ER) at the flame front (flame ER for short) is introduced to measure the gas composition in evaporating sprays. For overall fuel-lean mixtures, quasi-stationary spherical flame (QSSF) occurs due to lean flame ER and the composition at the QSSF front is homogeneous. For overall fuel-rich two-phase mixtures, re-ignition, after the spark-ignited kernel fails, is observed when the droplet diameter is 15 {\mu}m for fuel sprays with both fuel-lean and fuel-rich background gas. This is due to rich flame ER and/or strong evaporative heat loss. Meanwhile, the kernel is born in a heterogeneous mixture and transition into homogeneous state is found. For both overall lean and rich two-phase mixtures, fuel droplets affect the ignitability and flame trajectories. Moreover, ignition energy affects the flame ER and front distance at the early stage of kernel development. Lastly, the minimum ignition energies (MIE) with different gas and overall ERs are investigated.

Transmission of hydrogen detonation wave (DW) in an inert particle curtain is simulated using the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach with gas-particle two-way coupling. A detailed chemical mechanism is used for hydrogen detonative combustion and parametric studies are conducted based on a two-dimensional computational domain. A detonation map of propagation and extinction corresponding to various particle sizes, concentrations, and curtain thicknesses is plotted. It is shown that the critical curtain thickness decreases considerably when the particle concentration is less than the critical value. The effects of curtain thickness on the trajectories of peak pressure, shock front speed, and heat release rate are examined. Three propagation modes of the DW in particle curtain are found: detonation transmission, partial extinction and detonation reinitiation, and detonation extinction. The chemical explosive mode analysis confirms that a detonation re-initiation event is caused by a re-initiation point with high pressure and explosive propensity, resulting from transverse shock focusing. The influence of particle dimeter and concentration, and curtain thickness on the DW are also examined with peak pressure trajectories, shock speed, and interphase exchange rates of energy and momentum. Furthermore, the evolutions of curtain morphologies are analyzed by the particle velocity, volume fraction, Stokes drag and Archimedes force. This analysis confirms the importance of the drag force in influencing the change of curtain morphologies. Different curtain evolution regimes are found: quasi-stationary regime, shrinkage regime, constant-thickness regime, and expansion regime. Finally, the influences of the curtain thickness on the characteristic time of curtain evolutions are studied.

Through agronomic traits and sequencing data, the cultivated and wild varieties of grapes and peaches were analyzed and compared in terms of fruit size, fruit flavor, fruit resistance, and fruit color. Cultivated grapes and peaches have advantages in fruit size, soluble sugar content, sugar and acid ratio, etc. Wild grapes and peaches have utility value in resistance. The results showed that there were 878 and 301 differentially expressed genes in cultivated and wild grapes and peaches in the three growth stages, respectively based on the next-generation sequencing study. Ten and twelve genes related to the differences between cultivated and wild grapes and peaches were found respectively. Among them, 3 genes exist in both cultivated and wild grapes and peaches, including: chalcone synthase (CHS), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH1) genes.

Numerical simulations of one-dimensional pulsating detonation in off-stoichiometric n-heptane/air mixtures are conducted by solving the reactive Navier–Stokes equations with a skeletal chemical mechanism. The effects of mixture equivalence ratio, initial pressure and temperature on pulsating detonations are studied. The results show that the pulsating instabilities in n-heptane/air mixtures are strongly affected by equivalence ratio. It is seen that pulsating instability only occurs in the fuel-lean or fuel-rich cases, whereas stable detonation is obtained for near-stoichiometric mixtures. Low-frequency pulsating detonations with single mode are observed, and decoupling / coupling of the reaction front and leading shock front occur periodically during the pulsating detonation propagation. The heat release and flame structure at the reaction front of the fuel-lean case differ from those in the fuel-rich case, and thus affects the DDT process of the reaction front. The pulsating detonation frequency is considerably influenced by equivalence ratio, initial pressure and temperature. The results of chemical explosive mode analysis and budget analysis of energy equation reveal that the mixture between the reaction front and shock front is highly explosive and thermal diffusion would promote the periodic dynamics of the reaction front and shock front. It is also found that the chemical explosion mode in the induction zone consists of two parts, i.e. the autoignition dominated reaction immediately behind the leading shock front and a following propagating reaction front.

Numerical simulations with detailed chemistry are conducted for two-dimensional rotating detonative combustion with separate injection of fuel and oxidant. The influences of the fuel and oxidant compositions on combustion mode and detonation wave multiplicity are studied. It is found that in the parts of the flow beyond the fuel refill zone, there are two distinct, highly inhomogeneous zones with fuel-rich and fuel-lean compositions, respectively. Both detonative and deflagrative regimes are observed and proceed mostly under a premixed combustion mode with the deflagration confined mostly to the fuel-lean zone. The results from our simulations show that limited H2 is detonated or deflagrated close to stoichiometric conditions and more than 70% of H2 is detonated or deflagrated under fuel-lean conditions. Over 70% of the detonated H2 is consumed in a premixed combustion mode. Our analysis also suggests that the detonation fraction increases with increased inlet pressure, decreased inlet temperature or increased injection orifice number. Additionally, the range of mixture fraction over which the composition is detonable is narrower than the range for deflagration. The number of detonation waves increases with increased oxygen mass fraction in the oxidant stream, with the additional waves being formed by mutual enhancement of an explosive hot spot and a travelling shock wave. Stabilization of the multiple waves follows a chaotic period involving both co-rotating and counter-rotating waves. Furthermore, the deficit of the detonation speed relative to the ideal Chapman − Jouguet value increases with the number of waves but also decreases monotonically with the level of reactant mixing. The reactant mixing effects along the detonation wave height are further discussed through quantifying the statistics of height-wise mixture fraction, heat release rate and OH mass fraction.

It is well known that Navier-Stokes equations are not valid for those high-Knudsen and high-Mach flows, in which the local thermodynamically non-equilibrium effects are dominant. To extend the non-equilibrium describing the ability of macroscopic equations, Nonlinear Coupled Constitutive Relation (NCCR) model was developed from Eu’s generalized hydrodynamic equations to substitute linear Newton’s law of viscosity and Fourier’s law of heat conduction in conservation laws. In the NCCR model, how to solve the decomposed constitutive equations with reasonable computational cost is a key ingredient of this scheme. In this paper, an analytic method is proposed firstly. Compared to the iterative procedure in the conventional NCCR model, the analytic method not only obtains exact roots of the decomposed constitutive polynomials, but also preserves the nonlinear constitutive relations in the original framework of NCCR methods. Numerical tests to assess the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are conducted for argon shock structures, Couette flows, two-dimensional hypersonic flows over a cylinder and three-dimensional supersonic flows over a three-dimensional sphere. These superior advantages of the current method are expected to render itself a powerful tool for simulating the hypersonic rarefied flows and microscale flows of high Knudsen number for engineering applications.

In this work, oblique detonation of n-heptane/air mixture in high-speed wedge flows is simulated by solving the reactive Euler equations with a two-dimensional (2D) configuration. This is a first attempt to model complicated hydrocarbon fuel ODWs with a detailed chemistry (44 species and 112 reactions). Effects of freestream equivalence ratios and velocities are considered, and the abrupt and smooth transition from oblique shock to detonation are predicted. Ignition limit, ODW characteristics, and predictability of the transition mode are discussed. Firstly, homogeneous constant-volume ignition calculations are performed for both fuel-lean and stoichiometric mixtures. The results show that the ignition delay generally increases with the wedge angle. However, a negative wedge angle dependence is observed, due to the negative temperature coefficient effects. The wedge angle range for successful ignition of n-heptane/air mixtures decreases when the wedge length is reduced. From 2D simulations of stationary ODWs, the initiation length generally decreases with the freestream equivalence ratio, but the transition length exhibits weakly non-monotonic dependence. Smooth ODW typically occurs for lean conditions (equivalence ratio < 0.4). The interactions between shock / compression waves and chemical reaction inside the induction zone are also studied with the chemical explosive mode analysis. Moreover, the predictability of the shock-to-detonation transition mode is explored through quantifying the relation between ignition delay and chemical excitation time. It is demonstrated that the ignition delay (excitation time) increases (decreases) with the freestream equivalence ratio for the three studied oncoming flow velocities. Smaller excitation time corresponds to stronger pressure waves from the ignition location behind OSW.

The present work investigates forced ignition and oscillating propagation of spray flame in a mixture of fine ethanol droplets and air. Eulerian-Eulerian method with two-way coupling is used and detailed chemical mechanism is considered. Different droplet diameters and liquid fuel equivalence ratios (ER) are studied. The evaporation completion front (ECF) is defined to study the interactions between the evaporation zone and flame front. The gas composition at the flame front is quantified through an effective ER. The results show that the kernel trajectory is considerably affected by droplet size and liquid ER. Generally, the flame ER reaches the maximum when the ECF start to move from the spherical center. It gradually decreases and reaches a constant value when the flame freely propagates. Quasi-stationary spherical flame is observed when the liquid ER is low, whilst kernel extinction/re-ignition appears when liquid ER is high. These flame behaviors are essentially affected by the heat conduction and species diffusion timescales between the droplet evaporation zone and flame front. The dependence of the minimum ignition energy (MIE) on liquid ER is U-shaped and there is an optimal liquid equivalence ratio range (ERo) with the smallest MIE. Long and short ignition failure modes are observed, respectively for small and large liquid ERs. When liquid ER is less than ERo (long failure mode), larger energy is required to initiate the kernel due to very lean composition near the spark. For liquid ER larger than ERo (short mode), ignition failure is caused by strong evaporative heat loss and rich gas composition due to heavy droplet loading.

Interactions between a propagating hydrogen/air detonation wave and circular water cloud are studied. Eulerian Lagrangian method involving two-way gas-droplet coupling is applied. Different droplet (diameter, concentration) and cloud (diameter) properties are considered. Results show that droplet size, concentration and cloud radius have significant effects on peak pressure trajectory of the detonation wave. Three propagation modes are identified: perturbed propagation, leeward re-detonation, and detonation extinction. Leeward re-detonation is analyzed from unsteady evolutions of gas and liquid droplet quantities. The detonation is re-initiated by a local hot spot from shock focusing of upper and lower diffracted detonations. Disintegration of water droplets proceeds when the detonation wave crosses the cloud. In addition, detonation extinction is featured by quickly fading peak pressure trajectories when the detonation wave passes the larger cloud, and no local autoignition occurs in the shock focusing area. Evolutions of thermochemical structures from the shocked area in an extinction process are also studied. The transfer rates of mass, energy and momentum of detonation success and failure are analyzed. Moreover, parametric studies demonstrate that the critical cloud size to quench a detonation decreases when the droplet concentration is increased. However, when the droplet concentration is beyond 0.84 kg/m3, the critical cloud size is negligibly influenced due to small droplets. The interactions between an incident shock and a moderately dense particle curtain are simulated with the Eulerian–Lagrangian method. A customized solver based on OpenFOAM is extended with an improved drag model and collision model and then validated against two benchmark experiments. The results show that the collision model has a limited impact on curtain morphology compared with the improved drag model. In this work, parametric studies are performed considering different particle sizes, volume fractions, and curtain thicknesses. Smaller particle sizes and larger volume fractions lead to stronger reflected shock and weaker transmitted shock. Attention is paid to the particle collision effects on the curtain evolution behaviors. According to our results, for the mono-dispersed particle curtain, the collision effects on curtain front behaviors are small, even when the initial particle volume fraction is as high as 20%. This is due to the positive velocity gradient across the curtain after the shock wave passage, leading to the faster motion of downstream particles than the upstream ones, and hence, no collision occurs. For the bi-dispersed particle curtain, the collision effects become important in the mixing region of different-size particles. Collisions decelerate small particles while accelerating large ones and cause velocity scattering. Moreover, increasing the bi-dispersed curtain thickness leads to multiple collision force peaks, which is the result of the delayed separation of different particle groups. Our results indicate that the collision model may be unnecessary to predict curtain fronts in mono-dispersed particles, but in bi-dispersed particles, the collision effects are important and, therefore, must be modeled.

This study aims to build a theoretical model to describe the ignition process of spherical spray flame laden with fuel droplets under overall fuel-lean condition. Two characteristic fronts are introduced to reveal where the evaporation starts and ends in the ignition process. The results demonstrate that the flame has been strengthened with extra fuel droplet adding while the minimum ignition energy (MIE) is decreased. The Multiple Mapping Conditioning / Large Eddy Simulation (MMC-LES) approach is used to simulate a supersonic lifted hydrogen jet flame, which features shock-induced autoignition, shock-flame interaction, lifted flame stabilization, and finite-rate chemistry effects. The shocks and expansion waves, shock-reaction interactions and overall flame characteristics are accurately reproduced by the model. Predictions are compared with the detailed experimental data for the mean axial velocity, mean and root-mean-square temperature, species mole fractions, and mixture fraction at various locations. The predicted and experimentally observed flame structures are compared through scatter plots of species mole fractions and temperature against mixture fraction. Unlike most past MMC-LES which has been applied to low-Mach flames, in this supersonic flame case pressure work and viscous heating are included in the stochastic FDF equations. Analysis indicates that the pressure work plays an important role in autoignition induction and flame stabilization, whereas viscous heating is only significant in shear layers (but still negligibly small compared to the pressure work). The evolutions of particle information subject to local gas dynamics are extracted through trajectory analysis on representative fuel and oxidizer particles. The particles intermittently enter the extinction region and may be deviated from the full burning or mixing lines under the effects of shocks, expansion waves and viscous heating. The chemical explosive mode analysis performed on the Lagrangian particles shows that temperature, the H and OH radicals contribute dominantly to CEM respectively in the central fuel jet, fuel-rich and fuel-lean sides. The pronounced particle Damkohler numbers first occur in the fuel jet / coflow shear layer, enhanced at the first shock intersection point and peak around the flame stabilization point.

In this study, we develop a simplified theoretical model for flame initiation, propagation and extinction in premixed gas mixture containing water droplets, by considering water droplet evaporation in pre-flame or/and post-flame zones. The Eulerian droplet model with simplified evaporation sub-model is employed, while for gas phase the assumptions of constant-density, quasi-steady and large activation energy are made. Analytical correlations describing different flame regimes and transitions among flame balls, propagating spherical flames and planar flames are then derived to investigate the spherical flame initiation, propagation and extinction, with emphasis on the effects of water droplet evaporation on spherical flames at different Lewis numbers. Five different flame regimes are observed and discussed for droplets evaporation in pre-flame or/and post-flame zones. It is found that the droplets with larger heat exchange coefficient are more effective in reducing flame propagation speed and temperature but increasing the vaporization front. Moreover, the cooling effect of evaporation heat loss plays an important role on flame regimes and their transitions. At the relatively large heat exchange coefficient, the total evaporation heat loss from pre-flame and post-flame zones reaches its maximum at an intermediate flame radius. The cooling effect is strong enough to quench the flame and results in the self-extinguishing flame. In addition, the combined effects of stretch rate and Lewis number compete with the evaporation heat loss from droplet evaporation. For small Lewis number, the flammability limits can be achieved through self-extinguishing flames, whereas for large Lewis number the flames approach their flammability limits in their evolution into planar flames. For ignition of spherical flames, if the droplet-laden mixture is intrinsically non-flammable, although a propagating flame kernel can be initiated, however it would still be quenched due to evaporation heat loss at a critical radius. The minimum ignition energy increases with heat exchange coefficient and Lewis number.

Instability, extinction and re-initiation of rotating detonation in a two-dimensional Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) configuration are numerically investigated, and the emphasis is laid on the effects of variable total pressures on the above combustion dynamics. Two conditions, i.e. different constant pressures and time-varying pressures, are considered to investigate the combustion instability in RDE. It is seen that under constant pressure condition the rotating detonation is more prone to instability at low pressure, due to the instability from the deflagrative surface. The intrinsic frequency for the unstable cases with different pressures is close, and maybe related to the RDE configuration and/or fuel properties. For the time-varying pressures with various specified frequencies, the RDE shows the different levels of instability characterized by multiple frequencies. The dominant frequencies vary, depending on the competition between the forced external frequency and the intrinsic one induced by the RDE system. About the extinction of continuously rotating detonation, it can be found that when the total pressure is reduced to a relatively lower value the detonation is quenched and left with deflagrative combustion. Furthermore, when the total pressure is increased based on the extinguished flow fields, detonation fronts are re-initiated due to the local high pressure. The stochasticity in RDE re-initiation has been found, in terms of the location and number of initial detonation front, the propagation direction, their interaction and final stabilization.

The Eulerian-Lagrangian method is applied to simulate pulsating propagation and extinction of stoichiometric hydrogen/oxygen/argon detonations in ultrafine water sprays. Three detonation propagation modes are found: (1) pulsating propagation, (2) propagation followed by extinction, and (3) immediate extinction. For pulsating detonation, within one cycle, the propagation speeds and the distance between reaction front (RF) and shock front (SF) change periodically. The pulsating phenomenon originates from the interactions between gas dynamics, chemical kinetics, and droplet dynamics inside the induction zone. Multiple pressure waves are emanated from the RF within one cycle, which overtake and intensify the lead SF. An autoigniting spot arises in the shocked gas after the contact surface. The relative locations of SF, RF, shock-frame sonic point, and two-phase contact surface remain unchanged in a pulsating cycle, but their distances have periodic variations. Moreover, the unsteady behaviors of detonation extinction include continuously increased distance between the RF and SF and quickly reduced pressure peaks, temperature, and combustion heat release. The decoupling of RF and SF leads to significantly increasing chemical timescale of the shocked mixture. The hydrodynamic structure also changes considerably when detonation extinction occurs. Moreover, the predicted map of detonation propagation and extinction illustrates that the critical mass loading for detonation extinction reduces significantly when the droplet size becomes smaller. It is also found that for the same droplet size, the average detonation speed monotonically decreases with water mass loading. However, detonation speed and pulsating frequency have a non-monotonic dependence on droplet size under a constant water mass loading.

Lignin is one of the main components of plant cell walls, which provides mechanical support for plants and also contributes to resisting against plant pathogenic fungi. In the fruit industry, the lignin content can affect the quality of fruit. The biosynthesis of lignin involves a variety of enzymes, of which caffeoyl-CoA 3-O-methyltransferase (CCoAOMT) is a class of methyltransferases that plays an essential role in lignin biosynthesis. Studies have been conducted on the CCoAOMT gene family in several species, including arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), black poplar (Populus nigra), and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). Still, there is relatively little research on this gene family in the Rosaceae. In this study, we used bioinformatics to identify and characterize the CCoAOMT gene family in apple (Malus domestica), chinese white pear (Pyrus bretschneideri), and peach (Prunus persica). In total, 35 CCoAOMT genes were identified in the three Rosaceae species: 8 from chinese white pear, 12 from apple, and 15 from peach. By using structure analysis and collinearity analysis, we found 12 conserved motifs and 12 pairs of CCoAOMT genes with collinearity. In the phylogenetic tree, the gene family was mainly divided into two groups. The genes had different expression patterns during the growth and development stage of fruit, a finding that is consistent with the pattern of lignin accumulation. This study will be beneficial for further study of CCoAOMT genes.

Large Eddy Simulation with a Perfectly Stirred Reactor model (LES − PSR) is developed to simulate supersonic combustion with high-enthalpy flow conditions. The PSR model considers the viscous heating and compressibility effects on the thermo-chemical state, through correcting the chemical source term for progress variable and incorporating absolute enthalpy as the control variable for the look-up table. It is firstly validated by using a priori analysis of the viscous heating and compressibility effects. Then an auto-igniting hydrogen flame stabilized in supersonic vitiated co-flowing jet is simulated with LES − PSR method. The results show that the shock wave structure, overall flame characteristics, flame − shock interaction and lift-off height are accurately captured. Good agreements of the velocity and mixture fraction statistics with the experimental data are observed. The results also show that the LES − PSR model can predict the mean temperature and mole fractions of major species quite well in both flame induction and stabilization zones. However, there are some under-predictions of temperature RMS by about 100 − 150 K, which may be due to the chemical non-equilibrium in the H2/O2-enriched combustion product of the co-flowing jet. The scatter plots of two probe locations respectively from induction and flame zones show that the respective flame structures in mixture fraction space are captured well. However, the flucturations of the temperature and species mole fractions are under-predicted in the flame zone. The shock-induced auto-igniting spots are captured by the PSR model. These spots are highly unsteady and play an important role in flame stabilization. It is also shown that the intense reactions are initiated at mixture fractions around the stoichiometry or fuel-lean values, corresponding to local elevated pressure (1.5 − 2.0 atm) due to shock compression. The results also demonstrate that the pressure elevation is shown to have significant effects on the most reactive mixture fraction and shortest ignition delay time.

One-dimensional numerical simulations based on hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian method are performed to study the interactions between propagating shocks and dispersed evaporating water droplets. Two-way coupling for exchanges of mass, momentum, energy and vapour species is adopted for the dilute two-phase gas-droplet flows. Interphase interactions and droplet breakup dynamics are investigated with initial droplet diameters of 30, 50, 70 and 90 {\mu}m under an incident shock wave Mach number of 1.3. Novel two-phase flow phenomena are observed when droplet breakup occurs. First, droplets near the two-phase contact surface show obvious dispersed distribution because of the reflected pressure wave that propagates in the reverse direction of the leading shock. The reflected pressure wave grows stronger for larger droplets. Second, spatial oscillations of the gas phase pressure, droplet quantities (e.g., diameter and net force) and two-phase interactions (e.g., mass, momentum, and energy exchange), are observed in the post-shock region when droplet breakup occurs, which are caused by shock / droplet interactions. Third, the spatial distribution of droplets (i.e., number density, volume fraction) also shows strong oscillation in the post-shock region when droplet breakup occurs, which is caused by the oscillating force exerted on the droplets.

Background Pears and apples are both perennial deciduous trees of the Rosaceae family, and both are important economic fruit trees worldwide. The emergence of many varieties in the market has been mostly domesticated from wild to cultivated and regulated by the differential expression of genes. However, the molecular process and pathways underlying this phenomenon remain unclear. Four typical wild and cultivar pear and apple trees at three developmental stages were used in our study to investigate the molecular process at the transcriptome level. Result Physiological observations indicated the obvious differences of size, weight, sugar acid content and peel color in wild and cultivar fruit among each developmental stage. Using next-generation sequencing based RNA-seq expression profiling technology, we produced a transcriptome in procession of a large fraction of annotated pear and apple genes, and provided a molecular basis underlying the phenomenon of wild and cultivar fruit tree differences. 5921 and 5744 differential expression genes were identified in pear and apple at three developmental stages respectively. We performed temporal and spatial differential gene expression profiling in developing fruits. Several key pathways such as signal transduction, photosynthesis, translation and many metabolisms were identified as involved in the differentiation of wild and cultivar fruits. Conclusion In this study, we reported on the next-generation sequencing study of the temporal and spatial mRNA expression profiling of pear and apple fruit trees. Also, we demonstrated that the integrated analysis of pear and apple transcriptome, which strongly revealed the consistent process of domestication in Rosaceae fruit trees. The results will be great influence to the improvement of cultivar species and the utilization of wild resources.

Effects of low-temperature chemistry induced by ultrafine water droplet evaporation on reaction front development from an ignition spot with temperature gradient are studied in this work. The Eulerian-Eulerian method is used to simulate the gas-liquid two-phase reactive flows and the physical model is one-dimensional spherical reactor with stoichiometric gaseous n-heptane/air mixture and ultrafine monodisperse water droplets (initial diameter 5 micrometres). Homogeneous ignitions of two-phase mixtures are first simulated. The water droplets can complete evaporation in the reactor prior to ignition, and hence pronouncedly reduce gas temperature, which may induce the low-chemistry reactions. It is found that the turnover temperature for negative temperature coefficient range increases with droplet volume fraction. Three-stage ignitions are present when the volume fraction is beyond a critical value, i.e., low-temperature, intermediate-temperature, and high-temperature ignitions. The chemical explosive mode analysis also confirms the low-chemistry reactions induced by the evaporation of ultrafine water droplets. Then reaction front development from an ignition spot with temperature gradient in two-phase mixtures is analysed based on one-dimensional simulations. Different modes for reaction front origin in the spot are identified, based on the initial gas temperature and lower turnover temperature. Specifically, the reaction front can be initiated at the left and right ends of the ignition spot, and inside it. Detailed reaction front developments corresponding to the above three modes are discussed. Besides, the pressure wave from high-temperature ignition is important, compared to those from low- and intermediate-chemistries.

Two-dimensional numerical simulations with Eulerian-Lagrangian method are conducted to study propagation and extinction of stoichiometric hydrogen/air detonations in fine water sprays. Parameterized by water mass loading and initial droplet size, a detonation extinction map is developed. Detonation extinction would occur with larger mass loading and/or smaller droplet size. General features of gas phase and water droplets and local detonation frontal structures are well captured. Numerical soot foils are used to characterize the influence of mass loading and droplet size on the detonation wave. The results also show that the detonation cell size increases with increased mass loading or decreased droplet size. Analysis on unsteady detonation extinction process is performed with the evolutions of detonation frontal structure, spatial distribution of thermochemical variables and interphase transfer rates (mass, energy, and momentum). Moreover, the chemical explosive mode analysis reveals that for stable detonation, thermal runaway dominates behind the Mach stem, while chemical propensities of auto-ignition and thermal runaway appear alternately behind the incident wave. When the induction zone length increases as the reaction front (RF) and shock front (SF) are decoupled, localized burned pockets surrounded by the autoignition chemical explosive mode can be observed. In addition, the interactions between detonation wave and water droplets demonstrate that the energy and momentum transfer have more direct interaction with SF and RF than the mass transfer. The interphase transfer rates increase with the water mass loading. Under the same mass loading, the smaller the droplet size, the larger the interphase transfer rates. However, the size of fine water droplets has a limited influence on the interphase momentum exchange.

In this paper, two dimensional detonation propagation in partially prevaporized n-heptane sprays is studied by using Eulerian/Lagrangian methods. The effects of droplet preevaporation on the detonation propagation are investigated. The general features and detailed structures of two-phase detonations are well captured with the present numerical methods. The results show that the detonation propagation speed and detonation structures are significantly affected by the preevaporated gas equivalence ratio. The numerical soot foils are used to characterize the influence of preevaporated gas equivalence ratio on the detonation propagation. Regular detonation cellular structures are observed for large preevaporated gas equivalence ratios, but when decreasing the preevaporated gas equivalence ratio, the detonation cellular structures become much more unstable and the average cell width also increases. It is also found that the preevaporated gas equivalence ratio has little effects on the volume averaged heat release when the detonation propagates stably. Moreover, the results also suggest that the detonation can propagate in the two-phase heptane and air mixture without preevaporation, but the detonation would be first quenched and then re-ignited when the preevaporated gas equivalence ratio is small or equal to zero.

A hybrid Eulerian - Lagrangian solver RYrhoCentralFoam is developed based on OpenFOAM® to simulate detonative combustion in two-phase gas - liquid mixtures. For Eulerian gas phase, RYrhoCentralFoam enjoys second order of accuracy in time and space discretizations and is based on finite volume method on polyhedral cells. The following developments are made based on the standard compressible flow solver rhoCentralFoam in OpenFOAM®: (1) multi-component species transport, (2) detailed fuel chemistry for gas phase combustion, and (3) Lagrangian solver for gas-droplet two-phase flows and sub-models for liquid droplets. To extensively verify and validate the developments and implementations of the solver and models, a series of benchmark cases are studied, including non-reacting multi-component gaseous flows, purely gaseous detonations, and two-phase gas - droplet mixtures. The results show that the RYrhoCentralFoam solver can accurately predict the flow discontinuities (e.g. shock wave and expansion wave), molecular diffusion, auto-ignition and shock-induced ignition. Also, the RYrhoCentralFoam solver can accurately simulate gaseous detonation propagation for different fuels (e.g. hydrogen and methane), about propagation speed, detonation frontal structures and cell size. Sub-models related to the droplet phase are verified and/or validated against analytical and experimental data. It is also found that the RYrhoCentralFoam solver is able to capture the main quantities and features of the gas-droplet two-phase detonations, including detonation propagation speed, interphase interactions and detonation frontal structures. As our future work, RYrhoCentralFoam solver can also be extended for simulating two-phase detonations in dense droplet sprays.

One-dimensional numerical simulations based on hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian approach are performed to investigate the interactions between propagating shock waves and dispersed evaporating water droplets in two-phase gas-droplet flows. Two-way coupling for interphase exchanges of mass, momentum and energy is adopted. Parametric study on shock attenuation, droplet evaporation, motion and heating is conducted, through considering various initial droplet diameters (5-20 {\mu}m), number densities (2.5 x 1011 - 2 x 1012 1/m3) and incident shock Mach numbers (1.17-1.9). It is found that the leading shock may be attenuated to sonic wave and even subsonic wave when droplet volume fraction is large and/or incident shock Mach number is low. Attenuation in both strength and propagation speed of the leading shock is mainly caused by momentum transfer to the droplets that interact at the shock front. Total pressure recovery is observed in the evaporation region, whereas pressure loss results from shock compression, droplet drag and pressure gradient force behind the shock front. Recompression of the region between the leading shock and two-phase contact surface is observed when the following compression wave is supersonic. After a critical point, this region gets stable in width and interphase exchanges in mass, momentum, and energy. However, the recompression phenomenon is sensitive to droplet volume fraction and may vanish with high droplet loading. For an incident shock Mach number of 1.6, recompression only occurs when the initial droplet volume fraction is below 3.28 x 10-5.

Spherical flame initiation and propagation in particle-laden mixtures are investigated theoretically in this work. Within the framework of constant density, large activation energy and quasi-steady assumptions, a correlation describing spherical flame propagation speed as a function of flame radius is derived. This correlation is used to assess the influence of gas and particle properties on initiation and propagation of premixed spherical flames. Spherical flame initiation and propagation are shown to be influenced noticeably by the appearance of inert solid particles. It is found that the flame propagation speed and temperature both decrease with increased particle heat capacity and thermal relaxation time. A non-monotonic change of the flame propagation speed with flame radius is observed when there are particles with large heat capacity. Furthermore, the bifurcation of flame propagation speed is observed for particles with large heat capacity and thermal relaxation time. Within a certain flame radius range, there are both strong and weak flame solutions. The abrupt jump from the strong flame to weak flame results from the excessive heat loss caused by the solid particles and the energy balance is re-established along the weak flame branch. The Lewis number strongly affects the flame propagation speed, particularly for small thermal response time and high particle heat capacity. Additionally, the minimum ignition energy of the particle-laden spherical flames is found to increase with the Lewis number. At higher Lewis number, the difference of minimum ignition energy between gaseous and particle-laden situations becomes larger. To validate the theoretical results, one-dimensional transient simulations of particle-laden spherical flames with detailed chemistry have been conducted. Qualitative agreement is achieved for results from numerical simulations and theoretical analysis.

Propagation of weakly stretched spherical flames in partially pre-vaporized fuel sprays is theoretically investigated in this work. A general theory is developed to describe flame propagation speed, flame temperature, droplet evaporation onset and completion locations. The influences of liquid fuel and gas mixture properties on spherical spray flame propagation are studied. The results indicate that the spray flame propagation speed is enhanced with increased droplet mass loading and/or evaporation heat exchange coefficient (or evaporation rate). Opposite trends are found when the latent heat is high, due to strong evaporation heat absorption. Fuel vapor and temperature gradients are observed in the post-flame evaporation zone of heterogeneous flames. Evaporation completion front location considerably changes with flame radius, but the evaporation onset location varies little relative to the flame front when the flame propagates. For larger droplet loading and smaller evaporation rate, the fuel droplet tends to complete evaporation behind the flame front. Flame bifurcation occurs with high droplet mass loading under large latent heat, leading to multiplicity of flame propagation speed, droplet evaporation onset and completion fronts. The flame enhancement or weakening effects by the fuel droplet sprays are revealed by enhanced or suppressed heat and mass diffusion process in the pre-flame zone. Besides, for heterogeneous flames, heat and mass diffusion in the post-flame zone also exists. The mass diffusion for both homogeneous and heterogeneous flames is enhanced with decreased Lewis number. The magnitude of Markstein length is considerably reduced with increased droplet loading. Moreover, post-flame droplet burning behind heterogeneous flame influences the flame propagation speed and Markstein length when the liquid fuel loading is relatively low.

The first-order, single-conditioned sub-grid Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) model for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is applied to simulate a globally lean swirling methane flame in a gas turbine model combustor that has been studied experimentally. The time-averaged velocity, mixture fraction, temperature, major species and OH mass fractions, and the heat release rate are predicted well for most locations. A transient lift-off and flashback of the flame root due to localized extinction near the burner exit is observed that is qualitatively consistent with the experimental measurements. The time-averaged temperature is over-predicted very close to the fuel injection point, while it is accurately reproduced downstream. Comparisons of instantaneous conditionally-filtered temperature in mixture fraction space shows that the LES/CMC reproduces the large scatter of the experimental data points in temperature‒mixture fraction plane that span the full range unburnt to fully burnt, but to a smaller extent, suggesting a minor under-prediction of local extinction or the inaccuracy of the present first-order, coarse-grid CMC formulation to capture locally premixed flame propagation behaviour. Periodic variation of the heat release rate is observed with a frequency close to that of the measured Precessing Vortex Core (PVC). In general, the current LES/CMC model captures most features of this high-mixing-rate nominally non-premixed swirl flame in a gas turbine model combustor in agreement with experimental measurements.

Dollar spot is reported to be caused by multiple Clarireedia species and is a serious problem on many turfgrasses around the world. To our knowledge, the distribution of different Clarireedia species and their sensitivity profiles to fungicides remains unknown. In this study, a total of 275 isolates were characterized by ITS sequence. Amounts of 124, 59 and 75 isolates were identified as C. jacksonii, C. monteithiana and C. paspali, respectively, while each species of C. homoeocarpa and C. bennettii had only five isolates. Four and three isolates were identified as two potential new species, which remained to be further characterized. C. jacksonii and C. monteithiana were distributed worldwide, while C. paspali was restricted to China. Of the isolates with host information, 81% (93/115) and 19% (22/115) of C. jacksonii isolates were collected from C3 and C4 plants, respectively, 97% (56/58) of the C. monteithiana isolates were collected from C4 plants and all C. paspali isolates were collected from C4 plants. The coexistence of different Clarireedia species on the same C4 host type in the same locales was found in Shanghai (Paspalum vaginatum), Jiangsu (Paspalum vaginatum) and Florida (Cynodon dactylon). The study revealed that differential fungicide sensitivity patterns were observed in different species in Clarireedia for the first time. Similar differential sensitivity profiles were also found in the locales with coexistence of at least two species. The findings from this study suggest that the adjacent coexistence of different Clarireedia species and the differential fungicide sensitivity profiles of different species will complicate dollar spot disease control.

Flame stability limits and ignition delay time of the flameholder are experimentally studied in this work at the pressure of 0.03 – 0.06 MPa, Mach number of 0.1 – 0.3, and temperature of 320 K – 800 K. The results indicate that the reduction in equivalence ratios of lean ignition and blowout can be achieved by the increase in pressure or Mach number. Temperature rise will first increase and then decrease the lean ignition equivalence ratio. While increasing lean blowout equivalence ratio was observed with increasing temperature. The envelope of the stable combustion between the pressure and Mach number is measured, and the lowest temperature of successful ignition is 300 K, acquired at Mach 0.1 and 0.06 MPa. Besides, the correlation between the equivalence ratios of flame stability and inlet parameters, such as pressure, Mach number, temperature, is developed. The ignition process of the flameholder is imaged, and the ignition delay time decreases with increased pressure or temperature. The ignition delay time is shown first to decrease and then increase with the increase in Mach number.

The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) / Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) model with detailed chemistry is used for modelling spark ignition and flame propagation in a turbulent methane jet in ambient air. Two centerline and one off-axis ignition locations are simulated. We focus on predicting the flame kernel formation, flame edge propagation and stabilization. The current LES/CMC computations capture the three stages reasonably well compared to available experimental data. Regarding the formation of flame kernel, it is found that the convection dominates the propagation of its downstream edge. The simulated initial downstream and radial flame propagation compare well with OH-PLIF images from the experiment. Additionally, when the spark is deposited at off-centerline locations, the flame first propagates downstream and then back upstream from the other side of the stoichiometric iso-surface. At the leading edge location, the chemical source term is larger than others in magnitude, indicating its role in the flame propagation. The time evolution of flame edge position and the final lift-off height are compared with measurements and generally good agreement is observed. The conditional quantities at the stabilization point reflect a balance between chemistry and micro-mixing. This investigation, which focused on model validation for various stages of spark ignition of a turbulent lifted jet flame through comparison with measurements, demonstrates that turbulent edge flame propagation in non-premixed systems can be reasonably well captured by LES/CMC.
