Abstract

International audience; This paper is concerned with analytical developments of results firstly introduced by the authors in [1]. These developments are devoted to the optimization of upper bounds of the interval covariance matrices appearing in the Interval Kalman Filter [2]. The proposed study is mainly highlighted through two aspects. Firstly, the optimization is further performed by considering a class of upper bounds and minimizing the traces of these bounds in two stages (in terms of a gain matrix and then with respect to a scalar parameter). Secondly, the paper provides conditions under which the optimal trace value is controlled and hence the proposed Algorithm in [1], namely Optimal Upper Bound Interval Kalman Filter (OUBIKF), is ensured to perform with stability (i.e. without width explosion of the resulting interval estimators). Also under these conditions, the OUBIKF Algorithm, having a similar structure of the Standard Kalman Filter (SKF), is ensured to get a smaller trace upper bound of the covariance matrices in the correction step than the one in the prediction step. Numerical simulations based on anautomotive model is performed to illustrate the developed results.

Abstract

International audience; General interest in solvent-free catalytic processes is driven by the development of environmentally and economically acceptable procedures. Such processes require the use of highly active and stable catalysts. This study reports on the synthesis, characterization, and kinetic evaluation of two highly active Pd catalysts supported on different carbons support, i.e., multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and few-layer graphene (FLG). These catalysts, with similar Pd loading (∼2 wt%) and containing both Pd single atoms (PdSA) and nanoparticles (PdNP), were systematically tested for solvent-free total hydrogenation of squalene (SQE) to obtain high-purity squalane (SQA). Thanks to the unique cooperative catalysis between PdSA and PdNP involving H-spillover, the activities of both catalysts were high compared to catalysts described in the literature. Solvent-free total hydrogenation of SQE could be performed under mild conditions (120 °C, 20 bar H2, 4 h) using ultralow Pd loading (60 ppm). However, since this reduction reaction is highly exothermic (ΔHR= − 765 kJ.mol−1), heat management during the reactor operation with these highly active catalysts is crucial to avoid deactivation and thermal runaway. Under these conditions, Pd/FLG was highly active but deactivated, unlike Pd/CNT, which still has high activity, but does not deactivate. Characterizations (ICP, XPS, Raman, TPD-MS, HAADF-STEM) of the Pd/FLG catalyst before and after reaction, supported by calculations based on density functional theory, allowed us to propose a new mechanism of catalyst deactivation involving the chemical reduction of specific surface oxygen groups of the carbon support induced by H-spillover.

Let $S=\{p_1, \dots, p_r,\infty\}$ for prime integers $p_1, \dots, p_r.$ Let $X$ be an $S$-adic compact nilmanifold, equipped with the unique translation invariant probability measure $\mu.$ We characterize the countable groups $\Gamma$ of automorphisms of $X$ for which the Koopman representation $\kappa$ on $L^2(X,\mu)$ has a spectral gap. More specifically, we show that $\kappa$ does not have a spectral gap if and only if there exists a non-trivial $\Gamma$-invariant quotient solenoid (that is, a finite-dimensional, connected, compact abelian group) on which $\Gamma$ acts as a virtually abelian group., Comment: 25 pages

Abstract

Due to their periodic nature, metasurfaces used to perform anomalous reflection raise parasitic harmonic reflections. We show a classical synthesis example of such a structure and highlight its limitations. Floquet analysis and its associated simulation environment are exploited to understand the origin of these parasitic reflections and to mitigate them. The proposed method is based on the optimization of the metasurface periodic pattern: the supercell. A predictive method is built to calculate radar cross-section patterns from supercell Floquet simulation, avoiding dealing with heavy simulations. The proposed model, the optimization outputs, and the general results are exposed in details. Different cases are also discussed to prove the repeatability of the proposed method. An earlier version of this paper was presented at the European Microwave Conference and was published in its proceedings.

Abstract

International audience; This paper proposes a circuit model to calculate the current along printed coils used in Resonant Wireless Power Transfer. It considers a system composed of a metamaterial and two coplanar coils, transmitter and receiver, respectively. First, a circuit model for the system is presented. Then, an analytical model is proposed to calculate the self-inductance of printed inductors, their characteristic resistance, and the mutual inductance between coils. The proposed formulation for calculating the mutual inductance between inductors is based on Neumann’s formula. The practical results validate the model precision, obtaining a maximum deviation of approximately 8%, 3%, and 3%, respectively. Due to the generality of this approach, it can also be applied to more complex structures such as metasurfaces. The proposed 3-D models proved to be ideal for modeling the printed inductor. Furthermore, this model proved to be computationally more efficient for analyzing large systems when compared to commercial full-wave simulation software, with a reduction in the computational time larger than three orders of magnitude.

Abstract

International audience; Weathering phenomena are ubiquitous in urban environments, where it is easy to observe severely degraded old buildings as a result of water penetration. Despite being an important part of any realistic city, this kind of phenomenon has received little attention from the Computer Graphics community compared to stains resulting from biological or flow effects on the building exteriors. In this paper, we present physically-inspired deep weathering effects, where the penetration of humidity (i.e., water particles) and its interaction with a building's internal structural elements result in large, visible degradation effects. Our implementation is based on a particle-based propagation model for humidity propagation, coupled with a spring-based interaction simulation that allows chemical interactions, like the formation of rust, to deform and destroy a building's inner structure. To illustrate our methodology, we show a collection of deep degradation effects applied to urban models involving the creation of rust or of ice within walls.

Abstract

International audience; The structural and radio frequency (RF) design and optimization of a large deployable faceted reflectarray (RA) generating double polarization contour beam are presented in this work. The issue addressed is the thermoelastic stability of large RAs and the impact of the thermoelastic deformation (TED) under transverse thermal gradient on the RA performances. Finite element TED analysis is conducted on a deployable RA with self-standing structures, demonstrating the detrimental effects of the in-orbit TED impact on the RA performances, estimated to be above 3 dB losses. To this extent, a novel structural solution is proposed, based on the use of reliable mechanical support capable to mitigate the TED. The mechanical design reorientation is contingent on the RF design reformulation. The proposed novel mechanical and RF co-design concept and methodology allows the conception of a low-profile, thermo-structurally stable RA with compliant radiation patterns and high cross-polarization discrimination in the worst case thermal load. This methodology is based on a direct optimization of nine-panel faceted RA composed of advanced high-order Phoenix cells directly optimized to fulfill the contoured beam requirements and by respecting the local periodicity requirements of the layout.

Abstract

We consider a classic rendezvous game in which two players try to meet each other on a set of n locations. In each round, every player visits one of the locations, and the game finishes when the players meet at the same location. The goal is to devise strategies for both players that minimize the expected waiting time till the rendezvous. In the asymmetric case, when the strategies of the players may differ, it is known that the optimum expected waiting time of [Formula: see text] is achieved by the wait-for-mommy pair of strategies, in which one of the players stays at one location for n rounds, while the other player searches through all the n locations in a random order. However, if we insist that the players are symmetric—they are expected to follow the same strategy—then the best known strategy, proposed by Anderson and Weber [Anderson EJ, Weber RR (1990) The rendezvous problem on discrete locations. National audience; Objectifs : Les médecines non conventionnelles ne sont pas dénuées de toxicité et il est pertinent d’établir un état des lieux des connaissances du grand public vis-à-vis des huiles essentielles. Il s’agit d’identifier le profil des victimes d’une intoxication, les voies d’administration et les symptômes ainsi que les huiles essentielles incriminées.Méthodes : Deux enquêtes, à destination du grand public et des professionnels de santé, ont été diffusées (janvier-mars 2019). En complément, les données du centre antipoison d’Angers sur la période 2017-2018 ont été analysées et comparées avec les données de notre enquête.Résultats : Nos enquêtes rassemblent 623 et 59 réponses. Les données du centre antipoison d’Angers recensent 741 intoxications. Les précautions d’emploi et les contre-indications des huiles essentielles sont peu connues puisque 5% des répondants les identifient correctement. Abstract

International audience; Epoxy vitrimers encompass many advantages compared to traditional epoxy materials such as recyclability, repairability, and reprocessability. These properties are induced by the incorporation of dynamic reversible covalent bonds. Recently, the incorporation of aromatic disulfide bridges that are dynamic has expanded the development of new eco-friendly epoxy materials. Herein, we studied a bio-based aliphatic disulfide based on cystamine as a hardener with a vanillin-derived bio-sourced epoxy to prepare fully bio-based epoxy vitrimers. This article provides a comparative study between cystamine and an aromatic disulfide benchmark hardener issued from petrol resources. This work demonstrated that the presence of this aliphatic hardener has a significant influence not only on the reactivity, but most importantly on the resulting dynamic properties. An interesting yet counterintuitive accelerating effect of the dynamic exchanges was clearly demonstrated with only 2 to 20% of molar fraction of cystamine added to the aromatic disulfide formulation. A similar glass transition was obtained compared to the purely aromatic analogue, but relaxation times were decreased by an order of magnitude.

International audience; Transfer impedance is a main characteristic to describe the shielding performance of shielded cables at least up to 1 GHz. Traditionally, methods like line-injection and triaxial cell have been used to characterize it at ambient laboratory conditions. While the ambient laboratory conditions might represent appropriate environmental conditions for some industries, in others, like automotive, they are only a small subset of the real conditions. Thus, there is a need to characterize the transfer impedance over different environmental conditions. In this article, the authors present and verify a new triaxial cell design that is aimed to provide reliable measurements during high thermal and mechanical stresses. First, the cell performance is compared to a commercial cell at laboratory ambient conditions. Then, measurements are performed with the new cell at highly accelerated life testing conditions. Under these high thermal and mechanical stress conditions the cell performance is verified, and results on typical shielded cable performance under the same conditions are given.

Abstract

Current quantum systems based on spin qubits are controlled by classical electronics located outside the cryostat at room temperature. This approach creates a major wiring bottleneck, which is one of the main roadblocks toward truly scalable quantum computers. Thus, we propose a scalable memristor-based programmable DC source that could be used to perform biasing of quantum dots inside of the cryostat (i.e. in-situ). This novel cryogenic approach would enable to control the applied voltage on the electrostatic gates by programming the resistance of the memristors, thus storing in the latter the appropriate conditions to form the quantum dots. In this study, we first demonstrate multilevel resistance programming of a TiO2-based memristors at 4.2 K, an essential feature to achieve voltage tunability of the memristor-based DC source. We then report hardwarebased simulations of the electrical performance of the proposed DC source. A cryogenic TiO2-based memristor model fitted on our experimental data at 4.2 K was used to show a 1 V voltage range and 100 uV in-situ memristor-based DC source. Finally, we simulate the biasing of double quantum dots enabling sub-2 minutes in-situ charge stability diagrams. This demonstration is a first step towards more advanced cryogenic applications for resistive memories such as cryogenic control electronics for quantum computers.

Abstract

International audience; Teleoperating robotic manipulators can be complicated and cognitively demanding for the human operator. Despite these difficulties, teleoperated robotic systems are still popular in several industrial applications, e.g., remote handling of hazardous material. In this context, we present a novel haptic shared control method for minimising the manipulator torque effort during remote manipulative actions in which an operator is assisted in selecting a suitable grasping pose for then displacing an object along a desired trajectory. Minimising torque is important because it reduces the system operating cost and extends the range of objects that can be manipulated. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in a series of representative real-world pick-and-place experiments as well as in a human subjects study. The reported results prove the effectiveness of our shared control vs. a standard teleoperation approach. We also find that haptic-only guidance performs better than visualonly guidance, although combining them together leads to the best overall results.

Abstract

We propose a dynamic augmentation scheme for the asymptotic solution of the nonlinear algebraic loops arising in well-known input saturated feedbacks typically designed by solving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). We prove that the existing approach based on dynamic augmentation, which replaces the static loop by a dynamic one through the introduction of a sufficiently small time constant, works under some restrictive sufficient well-posedness conditions, requiring the existence of a diagonal Lyapunov matrix. However it can fail in general, even when the algebraic loop is well-posed. Then, we propose a novel approach whose effectiveness is guaranteed whenever wellposedness holds. We also show how this augmentation allows preserving the guaranteed region of attraction with Lyapunovbased designs, as long as a gain parameter is sufficiently large. We finally propose an adaptive version of the scheme where this parameter is adjusted online. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.

Abstract

We study its controllability around the ground state when the linearized system is not controllable and wonder whether the quadratic term can help to recover the directions lost at the first order. More precisely, in this paper, we formulate assumptions under which the quadratic term induces a drift which prevents the small-time local controllability (STLC) of the system in appropriate spaces. For finite-dimensional systems, quadratic terms induce coercive drifts in the dynamic, quantified by integer negative Sobolev norms, along explicit Lie brackets which prevent STLC.In the context of the bilinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation, the first drift, quantified by the $H^{-1}$-norm of the control, was already observed and used to deny STLC with controls small in $L^\infty$. In this article, we improve this result by denying STLC with controls small in $W^{-1, \infty}$. Furthermore, for any positive integer $n$, we formulate assumptions under which one may observe a quadratic drift quantified by the $H^{-n}$-norm of the control and we use it to deny STLC in suitable spaces.

Abstract

Low-tech approaches have come to the fore in the last few years, mainly in opposition to the techno-optimistic model proposed to solve current and future environmental crises. However, low-tech thinking is multifaceted, making the concept potentially rich but also vague. This article develops a seven-principle framework to categorize low-tech concepts based on an abductive approach which included a literature review and interviews with low-tech actors. Principle occurrence was assessed among the authors and interviewees. The results demonstrate that the low-tech movement entails more than a shift to robust and less-consumptive technical artifacts. While resource efficiency and material reuse are important traits of low-tech approaches, technical appropriation is the most frequently cited key principle in the literature and by the actors. This delineation into several principles can help to differentiate low-tech from other sustainability concepts related to resource conservation such as frugal innovations and circular economy. We aim in this article to open a discussion about the ways low-tech proponents are seeking to introduce transformative development pathways to sustainability.

Abstract

International audience; Abstract This article is focused on the application of plasma technology for the development of microwave lens antennas with electronically controllable radiation gain. With this aim, the analytical background and design procedure for designing a biconcave lens based on plasma dielectric material are presented. The procedure is used to design a plasma lens antenna with a pyramidal horn feed. The effect of switching the designed lens ON and OFF on the radiation gain of the lens antenna is investigated. It is also shown that the plasma frequency of the lens can be used to dynamically adjust the radiation gain. A one-dimensional version of the proposed plasma lens operating at 10 GHz has been developed to validate the concept. Experimentally measured characteristics of a fabricated prototype of the lens antenna based on commercially available fluorescent lamps confirm the presented design procedure and numerical results. The results also show that changing the plasma frequency of the lens can be used to adjust the radiation gain of the proposed lens antenna.

Abstract

Achieving high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency concomitant with long-term durability using low-cost, scalable photo-absorbers is a long-standing challenge. Here we report the design and fabrication of a conductive adhesive-barrier (CAB) that translates >99% of photoelectric power to chemical reactions. The CAB enables halide perovskite-based photoelectrochemical cells with two different architectures that exhibit record STH efficiencies. The first, a co-planar photocathode-photoanode architecture, achieved an STH efficiency of 13.4% and 16.3 h to t 60 , solely limited by the hygroscopic hole transport layer in the n-i-p device. The second was formed using a monolithic stacked silicon-perovskite tandem, with a peak STH efficiency of 20.8% and 102 h of continuous operation before t 60 under AM 1.5G illumination. These advances will lead to efficient, durable, and low-cost solar-driven water-splitting technology with multifunctional barriers.

Abstract

International audience; Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are over-stressed to accelerate High-Performance Computing applications and are used to accelerate Deep Neural Networks in several domains where they have a life expectancy of many years. These conditions expose the GPUs hardware to (premature) aging, causing permanent faults to arise after the usual end-of-manufacturing test. Techniques to assess the impact of permanent faults in GPUs are then strongly required, thus allowing to estimate the reliability risk and to possibly mitigate it. In this paper, we present a method to evaluate the effects of permanent faults affecting the GPU scheduler and control units, which are the most peculiar and stressed resources, along with the first figures that allow quantifying these effects. We characterize over 5.83x10^5 permanent fault effects in the scheduler and controllers of a gate-level GPU model. Then, we map the observed error categories in software by instrumenting the code of 13 applications and two convolutional neural networks, injecting more than 1.65x10^5 permanent errors. Our two-level fault injection strategy reduces the evaluation time from hundreds of years of gate-level evaluation to hundreds of hours.We found that faults in the GPU parallelism management units can modify the opcode, the addresses, and the status of thread(s) and warp(s). The large majority (up to 99%) of these hardware permanent errors impacts the running software execution. Errors affecting the instruction operation or resource management hang the code, while 45% of errors in the parallelism management or control-flow induce silent data corruptions.

Abstract

International audience; Every winter, respiratory viruses put most Emergency Departments (ED) around the world under intense pressure. To reduce the consequent stress for hospitals, anticipation of the massive increase of intakes for illness-based symptoms is essential. As the Covid-19 2020 pandemic clearly illustrates, patients are not systematically tested. The ED staff therefore has no real-time knowledge of the presence of the virus in the patients flow. To address this issue, we propose here to use the hospital's laboratory-confirmed database as an attractor for the manifold-based approach for clustering the clinical codes associated with respiratory viruses. We propose a new framework based on the embedding of time series onto the Stiefel manifold, coupled with a density-based clustering algorithm (HDBSCAN) enhanced by a reduction of dimension (UMAP) for the clustering on that manifold. In particular, we show, based on real data sets of two academic hospitals in France, the significant benefits of using geometrical approaches for time series clustering as compared to traditional methods.

Abstract

International audience; The control of biofouling is required to improve membranes performances for water filtration. In this context, developing bioinspired approaches to modify membranes and give them antifouling properties is an interesting alternative. In this study, we elaborated new anti-biofouling membranes by coating them with vanillin, a natural bioactive molecule acting as a Quorum Sensing Inhibitor (QSI). First, the adsorption of vanillin by filtration was optimized to obtain homogeneous surface modifications. The modified membranes were then characterized in terms of physical-chemical properties: the results showed that they were more hydrophobic and exhibited a 14% decrease in pure water flux. Then, their anti-fouling properties were evaluated using complementary multiscale characterization methodologies; AFM single-cell experiments showed that vanillin adsorption had an effect on both the probability of bacterial cells to adhere to the surface, and on the force of adhesion. Direct EFM and SEM observation and adhesion assays further confirmed the effect of vanillin-modified membranes at the population-scale which showed a decrease in the bacterial coverage rate up to 50%. Altogether, it confirms the multifunctionality of vanillin-coated membranes against biofouling: reduction of bacterial initial adhesion by changing the membranes surface properties and reduction of biofilm formation by quorum sensing inhibition

Abstract

International audience; Most classical SLAM systems rely on the static scene assumption, which limits their applicability in real world scenarios. Recent SLAM frameworks have been proposed to simultaneously track the camera and moving objects. However they are often unable to estimate the canonical pose of the objects and exhibit a low object tracking accuracy. To solve this problem we propose TwistSLAM++, a semantic, dynamic, SLAM system that fuses stereo images and LiDAR information. Using semantic information, we track potentially moving objects and associate them to 3D object detections in LiDAR scans to obtain their pose and size. Then, we perform registration on consecutive object scans to refine object pose estimation. Finally, object scans are used to estimate the shape of the object and constrain map points to lie on the estimated surface within the bundle adjustment. We show on classical benchmarks that this fusion approach based on multimodal information improves the accuracy of object tracking.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, the static and fatigue behaviors under compression of Multi-Directional (MD) Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates with impact damage were investigated. After low-velocity impact performed on three 24-ply Quasi-Isotropic Quasi-Homogeneous (QIQH) laminates having different stacking sequences, the influence of the distribution of interfaces between two plies on the compression after impact and post-impact compression fatigue properties was evaluated. The damages on the surfaces and internal delamination were accessed via visual and optical observation and ultrasonic C-scan inspection. The thermographic approach, which has been developed and validated on numerous non-impacted composite materials, was applied for the rapid determination of the fatigue limit together with the S-N curves of post-impact fatigue specimens.Experimental results showed that with 5 J impact energy, the three stacking sequences gave similar impact results. The residual strengths measured by compression after impact tests were also similar to each other, so did the global damage modes. The determined fatigue limits of impacted specimens of different stacking sequences were nearly identical and the predicted S-N curves were also close to each other despite the exact crack propagation and orientation were not the same, under both compressive static and cyclic loads.

Abstract

International audience; The complex photoisomerization mechanism of the dihydropyrene (DHP) photochromic system is revisited using spin-flip time-dependent density functional theory (SF-TD-DFT). The photoinduced ring-opening reaction of DHP into its cyclophanediene isomer involves multiple coupled electronic states of different character. A balanced treatment of both static and dynamic electron correlations is required to determine both the photophysical and photochemical paths in this system. The present results provide a refinement of the mechanistic picture provided in a previous complete active space self-consistent field plus second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2//CASSCF) study based on geometry optimizations at the CASSCF level. In particular, the nature of the conical intersection playing the central role of the photochemical funnel is different. While at the CASSCF level, the crossing with the ground state involves a covalent doubly excited state leading to a three-electron/three-center bond conical intersection, SF-TD-DFT predicts a crossing between the ground state and a zwitterionic state. These results are supported by multi-state CASPT2 calculations. This study illustrates the importance of optimizing conical intersections at a sufficiently correlated level of theory to describe a photochemical path involving crossings between covalent and ionic states.

Abstract

International audience; Alloy material selection for sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective use in components is a key requirement for both power generation and aerospace sectors. Superalloys are manufactured using a combination of different elements, selected carefully to balance mechanical performance and environmental resistance to be used in a variety of different service conditions. Therefore, a fundamental understanding of each element is critical to alloy design. In this paper, the interaction of alloy chemistry, particularly chromium as a corrosion-resistant element along with titanium and molybdenum, and their effect on alloys performance for the relevant gas turbine industries were discussed. Based on the findings, the single-crystal alloy is found to be a better corrosion resistant alloy exhibited higher corrosion resistance in comparison to polycrystal alloys and proved that microstructure has a significant impact on alloy performance. This study also established that molybdenum level in chromia former alloys can significantly enhance the corrosion damage.

Abstract

Greenery strategies and shaded pedestrian passages have become requirements for designing smart cities in developed countries. One of the most difficult challenges for designers is designing cities in hot and arid climates while maintaining a proper level of outdoor thermal comfort. The designers focus on creating a comfortable climate for people throughout the afternoon under the hot sun, particularly in countries where summer temperatures rise excessively for more than seven months per year, as in Iraq. This study compares two Baghdad cities: Haifa Street, which was built in 1984 on a Western design pattern, and the second city, which the researchers designed according to the requirements of construction in an arid climate, such as street and building orientation, aspect ratio, sky view factor, the influence of courtyards, and the role of albedo. The second city is planned to cover the same total area as the first. The results of the two cities were compared and analyzed using ENVI-met software. To conduct a comparison between the two cities on a typical summer day, two indices, PMV and Tmrt, were used. The results showed that the proposed new city design reduced Tmrt and PMV, contributing to improved thermal comfort. The proposed design reduced the Tmrt value in the model by 10.5°C in proportions of 90% of the total urban area. Furthermore, the suggested design offers superior thermal values on a typical summer day than Haifa Street.

Abstract

Huntington's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by a CAG expansion in the first exon of the HTT gene, resulting in an extended polyglutamine (poly-Q) tract in huntingtin (httex1). The structural changes occurring to the poly-Q when increasing its length remain poorly understood due to its intrinsic flexibility and the strong compositional bias. The systematic application of site-specific isotopic labeling has enabled residue-specific NMR investigations of the poly-Q tract of pathogenic httex1 variants with 46 and 66 consecutive glutamines. Integrative data analysis reveals that the poly-Q tract adopts long α-helical conformations propagated and stabilized by glutamine side chain to backbone hydrogen bonds. We show that α-helical stability is a stronger signature in defining aggregation kinetics and the structure of the resulting fibrils than the number of glutamines. Our observations provide a structural perspective of the pathogenicity of expanded httex1 and pave the way to a deeper understanding of poly-Q-related diseases., We thank G. (Corresponding author: Ángel Palomares-Caballero.), This paper presents a metal-only reflectarray that enables the control of incident orthogonal polarizations in a large bandwidth. The proposed reflectarray is based on a unit cell whose tuning elements allow the independent control of the reflection phase value for the vertical and horizontal impinging polarizations. Due to the symmetry of the unit cell, the same performance is produced by each polarization when its reflection phase response is modified. The proposed unit cell provides a fairly linear phase response along the frequency with a phase variation in the orthogonal polarization of ±1o. The performance under oblique incidence and the frequency limitation of the unit cell are also investigated. From this unit cell, a metal-only reflectarray that produces circular polarization from a linear polarization is designed. The reflectarray presents a simulated directivity greater than 27 dBi with an axial ratio below 1.5 dB from 32 GHz to 50 GHz (43.9% of bandwidth). A prototype is fabricated and the measured results agree well with the simulated ones. The obtained aperture efficiency is between 56% and 41% in the considered frequency band. Abstract

International audience; We describe parallel and series resonant converters via a unified set of input-dependent coordinates whose dynamics is intrinsically hybrid. We then propose a hybrid feedback showing a self-oscillating behavior whose amplitude and frequency can be adjusted by a reference input ranging from zero to π. For any reference value in that range we give a Lyapunov function certifying the existence of a unique nontrivial hybrid limit cycle whose basin of attraction is global except for the origin. Our results are confirmed by experimental results on a series resonant converter prototype.

This paper is devoted to the existence, uniqueness and comparison theorem on unbounded solutions of a scalar backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) whose generator grows (with respect to both unknown variables $y$ and $z$) in a super-linear way like $|y||\ln |y||^{(\lambda+1/2)\wedge 1}+|z||\ln |z||^{\lambda}$ for some $\lambda\geq 0$. For the following four different ranges of the growth power parameter $\lambda$: $\lambda=0$, $\lambda\in (0,1/2)$, $\lambda=1/2$ and $\lambda>1/2$, we give reasonably weakest possible different integrability conditions of the terminal value for the existence of an unbounded solution to the BSDE. In the first two cases, they are stronger than the $L\ln L$-integrability and weaker than any $L^p$-integrability with $p>1$; in the third case, the integrability condition is just some $L^p$-integrability for $p>1$; and in the last case, the integrability condition is stronger than any $L^p$-integrability with $p>1$ and weaker than any $\exp(L^\epsilon)$-integrability with $\epsilon\in (0,1)$. Abstract

The second-order cone (SOC) is a class of simple convex cones and optimizing over them can be done more efficiently than with semidefinite programming. It is interesting both in theory and in practice to investigate which convex cones admit a representation using SOCs, given that they have a strong expressive ability. In this paper, we prove constructively that the cone of sums of nonnegative circuits (SONC) admits a SOC representation. Based on this, we give a new algorithm for unconstrained polynomial optimization via SOC programming. We also provide a hybrid numeric-symbolic scheme which combines the numerical procedure with a rounding-projection algorithm to obtain exact nonnegativity certificates. Abstract

The material extrusion process (MEX), also known as the fused filament fabrication process, has attracted attention in the manufacturing industry. A major obstacle to further application of the technology is the lack of mechanical strength due to the weak interlayer strength and poor coalescence between the adjacent beads. Understanding the effect of printing parameters on the coalescence of the adjacent beads is a step toward the improvement of the process. In this study, a novel two-phase flow numerical simulation approach coupled with heat transfer simulation has been applied to the high-viscosity polymers to determine the coalescence in the MEX process. The influence of printing temperature, substrate temperature, and the temperature of the printing chamber, as well as material deposition strategy (unidirectional and bidirectional) on the coalescence of the beads, has been investigated by numerical simulation and validated by experimental study. The modeling approach is applied to Glycerol, Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and Polylactic acid (PLA). The results show that increasing temperature points (substrate temperature, chamber temperature, and printing temperature), increase the coalescence between the beads in the MEX process. The heat transfer model reveals that the cooling rate of the deposited bead in the MEX process is relatively high, and hence, the time window for reaching the coalescence between beads/layers is short. The heat transfer model also indicates that deposition of the further layers and beads does not influence the coalescence. The coalescence in the bidirectional deposition is higher compared to the unidirectional all conditions remaining similar. Unidirectional deposition leads to a uniform coalescence between the beads. However, the coalescence is not uniform for bidirectional deposition. The main novelty of this research is to simultaneously model heat transfer, shear rate and coalescence for numerical simulation to study the effect of printing parameters on the coalescence in the MEX process. Since the modeling of coalescence is time-consuming, two empirical equations based on obtained results have been proposed to predict the coalescence for PLA and PEEK separately. publishedVersion

Abstract

The long search for nontoxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites (LHPs) has shown that some compelling properties of LHPs, such as low effective masses of carriers, can only be attained in their closest Sn(II) and Ge(II) analogues, despite their tendency toward oxidation. Judicious choice of chemistry allowed formamidinium tin iodide (FASnI3) to reach a power conversion efficiency of 14.81% in photovoltaic devices. This progress motivated us to develop a synthesis of colloidal FASnI3 NCs with a concentration of Sn(IV) reduced to an insignificant level and to probe their intrinsic structural and optical properties. Intrinsic FASnI3 NCs exhibit unusually low absorption coefficients of 4 × 103 cm-1 at the first excitonic transition, a 190 meV increase of the band gap as compared to the bulk material, and a lack of excitonic resonances. Abstract

International audience; The syntheses of several alkaloids and nitrogen-containing compounds including N-Boc-coniine (14b), pyrrolizidine (1), δ-coniceine (2), and pyrrolo[1,2a]azepine (3) are described. New C-C bonds in the α position relative to the nitrogen atom were formed by the alkylation of metalated α-aminonitriles 4 and 6a-c with alkyl iodides possessing the requisite size and functionality. In all of the reported cases, the pyrrolidine ring was formed in the aqueous medium through a favorable 5-exo-tet process involving a primary or a secondary amino group and a terminal δ-leaving group. Conversely, the azepane ring was efficiently formed in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), as the preferred aprotic solvent, through an unreported 7-exo-tet cyclization process involving a more nucleophilic sodium amide and a terminal mesylate borne by a saturated six carbon chain unit. In this way, we successfully synthesized pyrrolo[1,2a]azepane 3 and 2-propyl-azepane 14c in good yields from inexpensive and readily available materials without tedious separation methods.

Abstract

International audience; The design of a pipe flow boiling experiment for the International Space Station is proposed, taking into account typical weight, power consumption and size constraints. The effect of singularities such as elbows upstream the test section is investigated. Velocity profiles downstream two elbows, measured by Particle Image Velocimetry are in good agreement with numerical simulation and allow to determine a specific distance (decay length) downstream the elbows for which the velocity profile recover its axisymmetry. From these results a breadboard is designed and tested in parabolic flights. Care has been taken to generate boiling downstream the decay length. Two-phase bubbly flow is observed with 2 perpendicular high-speed cameras in the test section and a symmetry of the bubble distribution in the pipe is verified for different gravity conditions when the bubbles are created after the decay length.

Abstract

The one dimensional polymer complex (C9H15N3)[CdCl4], was synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, FT-IR vibrational, and thermal analysis, UV–Visible and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic investigations. The crystal structure crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with Z = 4. The experimental geometric data of the crystalline molecule and the results of density functional theory (DFT) generated utilizing computational methods at DFT/ωB97XD and DFT/B3LYP-D3/Gen/6-311++G(d, p)//LanL2DZ levels of theory were compared. Significantly, in order to reveal the vibrational modes of the named chemical, the Infrared and Raman spectra were registered. Then, 13C and 113Cd solid-state NMR was employed to characterize this hybrid material using a polar solvent to conduct an investigation of the optical characteristics for the UV–visible range. Consequently, utilizing the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO–LUMO) calculations, the molecule’s energy gap (Eg) was determined. More so, the PL tests revealed two peaks at about 400 and 423 nm while the Hirshfeld surface (HS) analysis and DFT calculations were also carried out to acquire insight into the role of weak molecular interactions in the complex that affect the self-assembly process and crystal packing. In addition, molecular docking experiments with the 6U3Y, 1SAX, and 2D45 receptors reveal ideal postures with intriguing binding affinities of −5.2, −5.6, and −5.7 kcal.mol−1, respectively. Lastly, thermo-differential analysis techniques (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis techniques (TGA) were used to account for the thermal degradation of the current complex.

Abstract

Up to date, only 6 imines have been detected in the interstellar medium. The 3-carbon imine, 2-propanimine ((CH$_3$)$_2$C=NH), is predicted to be the structural isomer with the lowest energy in the C$_3$H$_7$N group, and appears to be a good candidate for astronomical searches. Unexpectedly, no microwave or millimeter wave spectrum is available for 2-propanimine. In this work, we provide the first high resolution millimeter wave spectrum of 2-propanimine and its analysis. With the guide of this laboratory measurement, we aim to search for 2-propanimine in two molecule-rich sources Sgr B2(N) and IRAS 16293-2422 using observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Starting from a synthesized sample, we measured the spectrum of 2-propanimine from 50 to 500 GHz, and the ground state lines are successfully assigned and fitted using XIAM and ERHAM programs with the aid of theoretical calculations. The barriers to internal rotation of the two CH$_3$ tops are determined to be 531.956(64) cm$^{-1}$ and 465.013(26) cm$^{-1}$. These data are able to provide reliable prediction of transition frequencies for astronomical search. Although a few line matches exist, no confirmed detection of 2-propanimine has been found in the hot molecular core Sgr B2(N1S) and the Class 0 protostar IRAS 16293B. Upper-limits of its column density have been derived, and indicate that 2-propanimine is at least 18 times less abundant than methanimine in Sgr B2(N1S), and is at most 50-83 % of methanimine in IRAS 16293B., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

International audience; Exploring magnetic properties at the molecular level is a challenge that have been met by developing many experimental and theoretical solutions such as polarized neutron diffraction (PND), muon-spin rotation (µ-SR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), SQUID-based magnetometry measurements and advanced modelling on openshell systems and relativistic calculations. These methods are powerful tools that shed light on the local magnetic response in specifically designed magnetic materials such as contrast agents, for MRI, molecular magnets, magnetic tags for biological NMR etc.All of these methods have their advantages and disadvantages. In order to complement the possibilities offered by these methods, we propose a new tool that implements a new approach combining simulation and fitting for high-resolution solid-state NMR spectra of lanthanide-based paramagnetic species.This method relies on a rigorous acquisition thanks to Short Highpower Adiabatic Pulses (SHAP) of high-resolution solid-state NMR isotropic and anisotropic data on a powdered magnetic material. It is also based on an efficient modelling of this data thanks to a semi-empirical model based on a parametrization of the local magnetism and the crystal structure provided by diffraction methods. The efficiency of the calculation relies on a thorough simplification of the electron-nucleus interactions (point-dipole interaction, no Fermi-contact) which is validated by experimental analysis. By taking advantage of the efficient calculation possibilities offered by our method, we can compare a great number of simulated spectra to experimental data and find the best-matching local magnetic susceptibility tensor. This method was applied to a series of isostructural lanthanide oxalates which are used as a benchmark system for many analytical methods. We present the results of thorough solid-state NMR and extensive modelling of the hyperfine interaction (including up to 400 paramagnetic centers) that yields local magnetic susceptibility tensors measurements that are self-consistent aswell as consistent with bulk susceptibility measurements.

Abstract

International audience; Despite the wide availability of large motion databases, and recent advances in exploiting them to create tailored contents, artists still spend tremendous efforts in editing and adapting existing character animations to new contexts. This motion editing problem is a well-addressed research topic. Yet only a few approaches have considered the influence of the camera angle, and the resulting visual features it yields, as a mean to control and warp a character animation. This paper proposes the design of viewpoint-dependent motion warping units that perform subtle updates on animations through the specification of visual motion features such as visibility, or spatial extent. We express the problem as a specific case of visual servoing, where the warping of a given character motion is regulated by a number of visual features to enforce. Results demonstrate the relevance of the approach for different motion editing tasks and its potential to empower virtual characters with attention-aware communication abilities.

Abstract

International audience; In coherent direction of arrival (DOA) estimation,subspace-based methods suffer from performance deteriorationbecause of the rank loss of the signal covariance matrix. Avariety of spatial smoothing preprocessing techniques have beenproposed for decorrelation, among which the enhanced spatialsmoothing preprocessing (ESS) technique shows outstandingperformance by exploiting the signal subspace. However, ESSis applied by squaring the matrix whose columns span thesignal subspace (called signal matrix), which involves unnecessarycomputational loads. Besides, the smoothed covariance matrixafter ESS is a linear combination of the sub-matrices of signalmatrix, where the coefficients of the combination may underminethe decorrelation performance. In this context, a simplifiedspatial smoothing (SSS) technique is proposed for decorrelationby averaging the sub-matrices of the signal matrix directly,and avoids redundant operations in squared signal matrix. Theproposed method is tested numerically in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the number of snapshots, angle separation,and the execution time. Simulation results show the improvementof the decorrelation performance, efficiency, and robustness withthe proposed method in coherent scenarios, compared with theother spatial smoothing preprocessing based methods.

Abstract

We discuss the need for a confluence of localization, sensing and communications if RISs are to be deployed in a self-adaptive manner in the dynamically evolving rich-scattering settings that are typical for 6G deployment scenarios such as factories. We establish that in such problems the rich-scattering wireless channels are subject to a highly nonlinear deterministic double-parametrization through both the RIS and uncontrolled moving objects. Therefore, acquiring full context-awareness through localization and sensing is a prerequisite for RIS-empowered communications. Yet, the byproducts of this daunting communications overhead can feed many appliances that require context awareness, such that overhead concerns may vanish. We illustrate the essential steps for operating a self-adaptive RIS under rich scattering based on a prototypical case study. We discover that self-adaptive RISs outperform context-ignorant RISs only below a certain noise threshold that depends, among other factors, on how strongly uncontrolled perturbers impact the wireless channel. Abstract

International audience; In some visible light communication (VLC) systems, transmitters are light sources which support not only illumination but also information broadcast and positioning. Since transmit signals in these systems inevitably interfere with each other at the receiver side, extra devices may be added to synchronize the transmitters, but this impairs an appealing advantage in VLC systems that existing lighting infrastructure can be simply reused. This paper proposes a novel multiple access scheme to realize decentralized asynchronous VLC systems such that both the transmitters and receivers are asynchronous. For a system with N transmitters, two unique codewords of L chips are allocated to each transmitter where L is a prime number larger than 4N. Those codewords are designed to help maintain a constant transmitted average power and enhance channel estimation, as well as conveying data. Our scheme enables the receiver to obtain one channel estimate and one data symbol per L chips. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms other schemes in the literature in terms of bit error rate and system throughput.

Abstract

International audience; We study a finite volume scheme for the approximation of the solution to convection diffusion equations with nonlinear convection and Robin boundary conditions. The scheme builds on the interpretation of such a continuous equation as the hydrodynamic limit of some simple exclusion jump process. We show that the scheme admits a unique discrete solution, that the natural bounds on the solution are preserved, and that it encodes the second principle of thermodynamics in the sense that some free energy is dissipated along time. The convergence of the scheme is then rigorously established thanks to compactness arguments. Numerical simulations are finally provided, highlighting the overall good behavior of the scheme.

Abstract

International audience; Deep Learning (DL) applications are gaining increasing interest in the industry and academia for their outstanding computational capabilities. Indeed, they have found successful applications in various areas and domains such as avionics, robotics, automotive, medical wearable devices, gaming; some have been labeled as safety-critical, as system failures can compromise human life. Consequently, DL reliability is becoming a growing concern, and efficient reliability assessment approaches are required to meet safety constraints. This paper presents a survey of the main DL reliability assessment methodologies, focusing mainly on Fault Injection (FI) techniques used to evaluate the DL resilience. The article describes some of the most representative state-of-the-art academic and industrial works describing FI methodologies at different levels of abstraction. Finally, a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology is proposed to provide valuable guidelines for carrying out safety analyses.

Abstract

International audience; (Z)- and (E)-iminoacetonitriles (NCCH═NH), two hydrogen cyanide dimers, are described as key compounds in prebiotic chemistry. Among the many possible dimers of HCN with covalent bonds, even the second on the scale of thermodynamic stability, methylenecyanamide (CH(2)═NCN), has been investigated little. We show that this compound can be isolated, is stable enough to give an adduct with a nucleophile or a diene, and can be easily generated under prebiotic conditions, highlighting a possible role in this medium. Comparison between isomers shows significant differences in formation and chemical reactivity.

Abstract

International audience; This paper introduces a procedure for multi-objective optimisation, for compact wideband superdirective antenna array design, using network characteristic modes. The two main objectives considered are the maximisation of the directivity in the end-fire direction, simultaneously with the minimisation of the input reflection coefficient in a large bandwidth. The proposed method is used thereafter for designing a three-element superdirective small Yagi antenna, with an overall dimensions of 0.4 lambda x 0.37 lambda x 0.18 lambda. The length of this mini yagi antenna is 60% shorter than a classical one, with the same performances of gain and bandwidth. The measured results show that the antenna bandwidth, maximum gain, and efficiency are of 11.2%, 8 dBi, and 95% respectively.

Abstract

International audience; An improvement in the catalytic enantioselective allylboration of isatins with 2-allyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane in the presence of chiral BINOL derivatives is reported, offering an efficient one-step access to enantioenriched N-unprotected 3-allyl-3-hydroxy-2-oxindoles. This catalytic process is also effective for the crotylboration reaction with enantiomeric ratios (er) up to 97:3, as well as for the asymmetric synthesis of homopropargylic alcohols via an allenyl addition to indoline-2,3-diones. Origins of the high enantioselectivity in chiral BINOL-catalyzed allylboration of isatins were examined by DFT calculations. A hypothetical scenario suggested a crucial internal hydrogen bonding between the amide group (C═O···H-O) and the ethylene hydroxyl of the transient chiral mixed boronate ester, generating a rigid and stabilized system that favors the addition of the allylboron species to the Re face of the ketone function. The key role of the alcohol additive (t-BuOH or t-AmOH) in the enantioselective allylboration reaction of isatins has also been shown on the basis of a kinetics study and computational calculations by favoring the transesterification of the 2-allyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane with BINOL via proton transfer processes.

Abstract

Van der Waals magnetic materials are building blocks for novel kinds of spintronic devices and playgrounds for exploring collective magnetic phenomena down to the two-dimensional limit. Chromium-tellurium compounds are relevant in this perspective. In particular, the 1$T$ phase of CrTe$_2$ has been argued to have a Curie temperature above 300~K, a rare and desirable property in the class of lamellar materials, making it a candidate for practical applications. However, recent literature reveals a strong variability in the reported properties, including magnetic ones. Using electron microscopy, diffraction and spectroscopy techniques, together with local and macroscopic magnetometry approaches, our work sheds new light on the structural, chemical and magnetic properties of bulk 1$T$-CrTe$_2$ exfoliated in the form of flakes having a thickness ranging from few to several tens of nanometers. We unambiguously establish that 1$T$-CrTe$_2$ flakes are ferromagnetic above room temperature, have an in-plane easy axis of magnetization, low coercivity, and we confirm that their Raman spectroscopy signatures are two modes, $E_{2\text{g}}$ (103.5~cm$^{-1}$) and $A_{1\text{g}}$ (136.5~cm$^{-1}$). We also prove that thermal annealing causes a phase transformation to monoclinic Cr$_5$Te$_8$ and, to a lesser extent, to trigonal Cr$_5$Te$_8$. In sharp contrast with 1$T$-CrTe$_2$, none of these compounds have a Curie temperature above room temperature, and they both have perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Our findings reconcile the apparently conflicting reports in the literature and open opportunities for phase-engineered magnetic properties.
