In this paper, authors propose a study on microwave gas sensors and the influence of critical key parameters such as the sensitive material and the circuit conception process. This work aims to determine the influence of these parameters on the quality of the final response of the microwave gas sensor. The fixed geometry of the sensor is a microstrip interdigital capacitor coated with a sensitive layer excited with two 50 Ω SMA ports. The sensitive material has been chosen in order to interact with the target gas: ammonia. Indeed, this gas interacts with phthalocyanine and metal oxides like hematite, TiO2. To explore the effect of the circuit manufacturing process, three series of samples are prepared. The first series of sensors is produced by classical UV photolithography (process) in the laboratory. The second series of sensors is produced by a subcontractor specialized in rf circuits. The third series is obtained by the experimental platform of the FEMTO-ST laboratory with EVG620 Automated Mask Alignment System Nanoimprint lithography in a clean room. To examine the reliability of this gas sensor at room temperature, it was exposed to different ammonia gas concentrations from 100 to 500 ppm in an argon flow to eliminate coadsorption phenomena. According to the recorded frequency responses, the reflection and transmission coefficients show a change of resonance amplitude due to electrical characteristic modification. This can be correlated to the presence of gaseous ammonia. The chemical nature of the sensitive material layer has a major influence at the excited frequency range. The process of conception influences the sensor sensitivity. The analysis of the results shows a strong correlation between the injected ammonia concentration and its frequency response. The influence of the critical key parameters cited is discussed here.

This work presents new microwave-based sensing measurements for the detection of NH 3 using metal-oxide sensitive layers, namely titanium dioxide nanoparticles (P25 Degussa). Several designs have been tested to assess the influence of the design on the microwave gas sensing response. The results for microstrip interdigital capacitor, rectangular spiral antenna and spiral resonator are presented over a wide range of frequencies (2-8GHz). All designs were firstly optimized by numerical simulation, then experimentally tested in presence of ammonia (from 100 to 500ppm in an argon flow).

This work presents new elements of understanding for the microwave-based gas sensors behavior at room temperature. A TiO2-covered microstrip interdigital capacitor was submitted to various ethanol concentrations and showed a proportional response in the 1–10 GHz microwave range. For each concentration and right after ethanol injection, the sensor response presented a slight overshoot which is often found in gas sensors studies. Near ambient pressure photoemission experiments (NAP-XPS) were conducted to explore the physicochemical causes of this overshoot, and demonstrated the formation of an ethoxide during ethanol adsorption.

International audience; Since 2005, the microwave transduction coupled with a sensitive material is devoted to gas detection. In this work, we demonstrate the possibility to detect liquid pollutant (pesticide, fungicide) for food-processing industry. The principle is based on the interaction of the pollutant with a sensitive material within a microwave structure. The sensor is submitted to an electromagnetic excitation in wideband frequencies (GHz) and presents a quantitative response to liquid pollutant expositions at low concentration. The retained sensitive material is a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) specific to the pesticide targeted in a model wine. The coupling with this material selectivity and the in situ microwave transduction presents a threshold of detection in the ng/l range.

This study focuses on the determination of a protocol for the production of a hybrid material composed of a polymer and a macrocyclic complex, namely polystyrene and a tetra-tert-butyl-copper phthalocyanine (Cu[(tBu)4Pc]), in order to obtain a layer thickness of about 100 nm and a controlled porosity in a highly reproducible way. Several methods were implemented and their reproducibility was evaluated through elements of characterization such as optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Resume Nous presentons une methode originale de detection des gaz. Notre capteur se compose d'un materiau sensible introduit dans une structure coaxiale. Un champ electromagnetique (micro-ondes), emis a travers le capteur par un analyseur de reseaux vectoriel, sollicite le materiau sensible soumis a un gaz. La variation de la reponse du capteur observee est due aux variations des proprietes dielectriques du materiau sensible induite par l'adsorption du gaz. L'etude fait apparaitre que le capteur a base d'oxyde SrTiO3 est quantitatif et selectif pour trois gaz differents (eau, ethanol, toluene). Pour citer cet article : J. Jouhannaud et al., C. R. International audience; This work presents a new transduction mode for gas sensing using a passive microwave circuit at room temperature. The design of the sensor includes a microstrip line where is deposited a thin molecular layer of cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc). The material is sensitive to ammonia and toluene. Submitted to an electromagnetic incident wave in the microwave range, the sensor response is a reflected wave. In the presence of ammonia, the reflected wave is specific to the species concentration. The sensor response is the reflected wave over the incident wave ratio at each frequency traduced by the reflected coefficient. La méthode par micro-onde est fondée sur les modifications des propriétés diélectriques d'un milieu lors d'un endommagement. Elle analyse les modifications de l'onde réfléchie d'une onde transmise dans le matériau vue comme une structure propagative et dont les propriétés se dégradent par la présence d'endommagement. La méthode par thermographie infrarouge repose sur les modifications des propriétés thermiques d'un milieu lors d'un endommagement. La propagation des ondes thermiques transmises dans le matériau est analysée. Lorsque ces ondes rencontrent un défaut, elles sont perturbées et la différence de température entre les différents milieux est alors mesurée. Des essais de flexion 3 points provoquant des endommagements (ruptures de fibre et délaminage) ont été menés. Pour conclure sur la pertinence de la détection, on corrèle les mesures électromagnétiques avec la perte de rupture de pente de la courbe force/flèche et avec la détection par thermographie infrarouge.

We outline the development of a gas sensor using microwave technology (0.3 MHz to 3 GHz). The sensor is a coaxial structure into which is introduced a sensitive material. An electromagnetic field (microwave), sent out through the sensor by a vectorial network analyzer, solicits the sensitive material exposed to a gas. The observed variation in the sensor response is due to the variation in the adsorption of this gas. SrTiO3, demonstrated to be the highly sensitive to water vapour, is exposed to differents gases (saturated vapour of water, ethanol and toluene). The response of the sensor is quantitative and typical for each gas. This method of measurement leads to the development of an alternative to the current gas sensor.

Hematite crystals of different shapes (dendrites, cubes, spindles and rhombohedra) were obtained via a low cost and environment-friendly microwave route. The structure and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). At last, a comparative microwave gas sensing study was performed to assess the influence of morphology on sensor response.

A non-destructive method is proposed to detect the located buried defects using scanning microwave microscopy. Based on the “skin effect”, our recent developments authorize 3D tomography with nanometric resolution. This technique associates the electromagnetic microwave measurement using a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) with the nanometer-resolution positioning capabilities of an Atomic Force Microscope. At each used frequency, an incident electromagnetic wave is send to the sample and the reflected wave gives information on a specific depth layer in the material. With a large bandwidth of frequencies, a 3D tomography is allowed inside the material. With characteristic tools of nanotechnology, different samples are developed with local buried defects. The result of the tomography applied on these samples and stainless steel samples (from Areva NP) are in accordance with the skin effect equation.

Monitoring the burn depth in heart during ablation of atrial fibrillation is a real challenge for the next years. The influence of the burning effect on the dielectric properties is not very developed and represents a growing interest in terms of characterization in medicine. Here, the microwave characterization of biological tissues in a liquid medium is performed through an open-ended coaxial probe placed directly against each sample. The evolution of the relative variation of the reflection coefficient is correlated with the depth of burned tissues. Measurements are performed on bovine muscles and pork hearts. Results are similar for both tissues.

The gas sensing is an environmental topic representing a strong interest for this century. Whatever the purpose: industrial emissions control or indoor quality air supervision, the challenge remains to produce effective low costs detection systems adapted to the atmospheric conditions. This study focuses on the estimation of the microwaves transduction technique viability for the toluene detection by the implementation of sensors based on zeolites layers, deposited on coplanar structures adapted to the microwave frequency range. We shall apply to explain the principles of the microwave transduction before approaching the conception of the sensors, the measurement protocol and the obtained results.

The main objective of this thesis is to propose an analysis of the microwave transduction specificities in the framework of ammonia sensing applications. The two main features of this transduction are its broadband characterization (1 to 8 GHz) as well as its sensitive materials (dielectrics). This transduction method is based on the interaction between a polluting gas and a sensitive material deposited on the surface of a microwave-specific propagating structure. The response of the sensor is not directly induced by the dielectric properties of the gaseous target molecule, but rather by those of the target species adsorbed on the surface of the sensitive material. This adsorption causes a modification of the sensor parameters measured by a vector network analyzer. Unlike more conventional transducers such as conductimetry, this principle works at room temperature with any type of material, including electrical insulators.The first work carried out during this thesis led to the development of a new experimental bench adapted specifically for the study of microwave gas sensors by measuring the S-parameters in reflection and transmission modes. This development includes the design of two new generations of sensors, coated with metal oxides (iron or titanium oxides) commercially available or synthesized during the study. The first sensor comprises interdigital circuits while the second sensor is a trapezoidal resonator. The latter is characterized by a series of frequencies of interest regularly distributed between 1 and 8 GHz. The association of a mass spectrometer with the measurement bench allowed to follow the adsorption and desorption behavior of the target species which is ammonia (10-100 ppm), but also the behavior of the vector gas conventionally used, argon, and water initially adsorbed on the sensitive material or intentionally added during the experiment. The objective is to study the role of water as interfering with the detection of ammonia, the main target species. A third molecule of interest, ethanol, was also used during the experiments in order to estimate the possible differences in the detected molecules behaviors. The experimental results were exploited using specific data processing protocols established during this thesis. Temporal treatments were carried out to study the kinetic behavior of the sensor, while spectral treatments allowed to apprehend the broadband aspect of the sensor response in the presence of pollutants.The first major result is the significant increase in sensitivity to ammonia, which significantly lowered the detection threshold to ammonia concentrations in the 10 ppm range. Titanium dioxide has been identified as a good candidate for ammonia detection, with reflection coefficient variations up to 6 dB for 300 ppm. The role of the water initially adsorbed on the sensitive material has been elucidated, showing that its influence is significant only during the first few minutes of the experiments. Thus, it is possible to detect ammonia in the presence of residual moisture. The processes induced by the gaseous exposures and particularly by the carrier gas were identified, and confirmed that the sensor response was solely due to its interaction with the target molecules. Another major result is the definition of the operating conditions that are necessary for the establishment of the selectivity. Our theoretical analysis clearly demonstrated the interest of broadband measurements in terms of discrimination of target molecules. This analysis has been tested in multitarget experiments using ammonia, water and ethanol. These observations allowed to establish the specifications of a new generation of microwave sensors, guaranteeing systematic discrimination between these three molecules., L’objectif principal de cette thèse est de proposer une analyse des spécificités de la transduction microonde dans le cadre d’une application capteur d’ammoniac. Les deux spécificités principales sont la caractérisation large bande (1 et 8 GHz) et les matériaux sensibles (diélectriques). Cette méthode de transduction repose sur l’interaction entre un gaz polluant et un matériau sensible déposé à la surface d’une structure propagative spécifique aux microondes. La réponse du capteur n’est pas directement induite par les propriétés diélectriques de la molécule gazeuse, mais plutôt par celles de l’espèce cible adsorbée à la surface du matériau sensible. Cette adsorption provoque une modification des paramètres du capteur mesurés par un analyseur de réseau vectoriel. Contrairement à des transductions conventionnelles comme la conductimétrie, ce principe fonctionne à température ambiante avec tout type de matériau, y compris les isolants électriques.Les premiers travaux réalisés durant cette thèse ont conduit au développement d’un nouveau banc expérimental. Il est spécifiquement adapté à l’étude de capteurs microondes par mesures des coefficients de réflexion et de transmission. Ce développement comprend la conception de deux nouvelles générations de capteurs, recouverts d’oxydes métalliques (fer ou titane) commerciaux ou synthétisés dans le cadre de l’étude. Le premier capteur comporte des circuits interdigités tandis que le second est un résonateur trapézoïdal. Ce dernier est caractérisé par une série de fréquences d’intérêt distribuées régulièrement entre 1 et 8 GHz. L’association d’un spectromètre de masse au banc de mesure a permis de suivre les adsorptions/désorptions de l’espèce cible qui est l’ammoniac (10-100 ppm), mais également le comportement du gaz vecteur utilisé, l’argon, et de l’eau adsorbée initialement sur le matériau sensible ou volontairement ajoutée en cours de l’expérience. L’objectif est d’étudier le rôle de l’eau comme interférent vis-à-vis de la détection de l’ammoniac. Une troisième molécule d’intérêt, l’éthanol, a été également été utilisée durant les expériences afin d’estimer de potentielles différences de comportement entre les molécules détectées. Les résultats expérimentaux ont été exploités au moyen de protocoles de traitement de données spécifiquement établis durant cette thèse. Des traitements temporels ont été conduits afin d’étudier le comportement cinétique du capteur, tandis que des traitements spectraux ont permis d’appréhender l’aspect large bande de la réponse du capteur en présence de polluants.Le premier résultat majeur est l’augmentation significative de la sensibilité à l’ammoniac, qui a permis d’abaisser le seuil de détection à des concentrations d’ammoniac de l’ordre de 10 ppm. Le dioxyde de titane a été identifié comme un bon candidat pour la détection d’ammoniac, avec des variations de coefficient de réflexion allant jusqu’à 6 dB pour 300 ppm d’ammoniac. Le rôle de l’eau initialement adsorbée sur le matériau sensible a été élucidé, montrant que son influence n’est significative que lors des premières minutes des expérimentations. Ainsi, il est possible de détecter l’ammoniac en présence d’humidité. Les processus liés aux expositions aux flux gazeux et particulièrement au gaz vecteur ont été identifiés et ont confirmé que la réponse du capteur était uniquement due à son interaction avec les molécules cibles. Un autre résultat majeur est la définition des conditions opératoires nécessaires à l’établissement de la sélectivité. Notre analyse théorique a clairement démontré l’intérêt des mesures large bande en termes de discrimination de molécules cibles. Cette analyse a été testée dans le cadre d’expériences multicibles utilisant l’ammoniac, l’eau et l’éthanol. Ces observations ont permis d’établir un cahier des charges d’une nouvelle génération de capteurs microondes, garantissant une discrimination systématique entre ces trois molécules.

In this work, we have developed a new gas-sensing transduction based on the propagation of microwave inside a sensitive material to detect atmospheric pollutants at room temperature. First, we present a short overview of the main gas-sensing transduction in the litterature. These techniques operate in frequency ranges different from microwaves. The dielectric permittivity is the main physical parameter in the microwave transduction. The principle is based on the excitation of a sensitive material by a microwave electromagnetic field in a propagative structure. The reflected wave is specific to the excitation's frequency. It depends on the interaction between the sensitive material and the pollutant gas and also on the geometry of the sensor. However, the variation of the conductivity of the sensitive material also changes the transmission of the wave through the microwave device. Inorganic materials (tin and titanium oxides) are used to validate the methods of transduction. Different geometries of sensor are studied with electromagnetic modeling and experimental testing. The sensitive material is used in compressed powders and thin films, in particular with a molecular material (cobalt phthalocyanine). This work improves the microwave transduction knowledge by the sensor geometries. The experimental tests in argon flux conduct to obtain a resolution better than 100 ppm. Few results are presented in air flux., Ce mémoire présente les recherches effectuées sur une nouvelle méthode de transduction, exploitant la propagation des ondes à haute fréquence, pour la détection de polluants atmosphériques. Dans un premier temps, les principaux modes de transduction exploités dans les capteurs existants sont présentés. Ils fonctionnent dans des gammes de fréquences différentes des microondes, afin de comprendre ce que peut apporter cette nouvelle transduction. La permittivité diélectrique est le principal paramètre physique responsable de la détection microonde. Cependant, la variation de la conductivité du matériau sensible modifie également la transmission de l'onde à travers le dispositif microonde. Les propriétés de propagation d'une onde sont formulées afin de comprendre comment l'onde est influencée par la propagation dans le matériau sensible et comment sa mesure est effectuée. Le traitement des données joue un rôle important dans la détermination de la réponse des capteurs. Les matériaux inorganiques (oxydes d'étain et de titane) ont permis de valider les modes de transduction. Différentes géométries de capteurs ont été modélisées et utilisées avec des poudres compressées et des films minces, en particulier avec un matériau moléculaire (phtalocyanine de cobalt). Ces études nous ont permis d'améliorer la transduction, grâce à l'évolution du format de la structure microonde. Cette évolution a permis d'obtenir une discrimination meilleure que 100 ppm pour l'ammoniac dans l'argon ou dans l'air, et ce à température ambiante.
