The upper wind-driven circulation in the tropical Atlantic Ocean plays a key role in the basin-wide distribution of water mass properties and affects the transport of heat, freshwater, and biogeochemical tracers such as oxygen or nutrients. It is crucial to improve our understanding of its long-term behaviour, which largely relies on model simulations and applied forcing due to sparse observational data coverage, especially before the mid-2000s. Here, we apply two different forcing products, the Coordinated Ocean-ice Reference Experiments (CORE) v2 and the Japanese 55-year Reanalysis (JRA55-do) surface dataset, to a high-resolution ocean model. Where possible, we compare the simulated results to long-term observations. We find large discrepancies between the two simulations regarding the wind and current field. In the CORE simulation, strong, large-scale wind stress curl amplitudes above the upwelling regions of the eastern tropical North Atlantic seem to cause an overestimation of the mean and seasonal variability in the eastward subsurface current just north of the Equator. The wind stress curl of JRA55-do forcing shows much finer structures, and the JRA55-do simulation is in better agreement with the mean and intraseasonal fluctuations in the subsurface current found in observations. The northern branch of the South Equatorial Current flows westward at the surface just north of the Equator. On interannual to decadal timescales, it shows a high correlation of R=0.9 with the zonal wind stress in the CORE simulation but only a weak correlation of R=0.35 in the JRA55-do simulation. We also identify similarities between the two simulations. The strength of the eastward-flowing North Equatorial Counter Current located between 3 and 10° N covaries with the strength of the meridional wind stress just north of the Equator on interannual to decadal timescales in the two simulations. Both simulations present a comparable mean, seasonal cycle and trend of the eastward off-equatorial subsurface current south of the Equator but underestimate the current strength by half compared to observations. In both simulations, the eastward-flowing Equatorial Undercurrent weakened between 1990 and 2009. In the JRA simulation, which covers the modern period of observations, the Equatorial Undercurrent strengthened again between 2008 to 2018, which agrees with observations, although the simulation underestimates the strengthening by over a third. We propose that long-term observations, once they have reached a critical length, need to be used to test the quality of wind-driven simulations. This study presents one step in this direction. more...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Resting-state functional MR imaging has been used for motor mapping in presurgical planning but never used intraoperatively. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of applying intraoperative resting-state functional MR imaging for the safe resection of gliomas using real-time motor cortex mapping during an operation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using interventional MR imaging, we conducted preoperative and intraoperative resting-state intrinsic functional connectivity analyses of the motor cortex in 30 patients with brain tumors. Factors that may influence intraoperative imaging quality, including anesthesia type (general or awake anesthesia) and tumor cavity (filled with normal saline or not), were studied to investigate image quality. Additionally, direct cortical stimulation was used to validate the accuracy of intraoperative resting-state fMRI in mapping the motor cortex. RESULTS: Preoperative and intraoperative resting-state fMRI scans were acquired for all patients. Fourteen patients who successfully completed both sufficient intraoperative resting-state fMRI and direct cortical stimulation were used for further analysis of sensitivity and specificity. Compared with those subjected to direct cortical stimulation, the sensitivity and specificity of intraoperative resting-state fMRI in localizing the motor area were 61.7% and 93.7%, respectively. The image quality of intraoperative resting-state fMRI was better when the tumor cavity was filled with normal saline (P = .049). However, no significant difference between the anesthesia types was observed (P = .102). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using intraoperative resting-state fMRI for real-time localization of functional areas during a neurologic operation. The findings suggest that using intraoperative resting-state fMRI can avoid the risk of intraoperative seizures due to direct cortical stimulation and may provide neurosurgeons with valuable information to facilitate the safe resection of gliomas. more...

Hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles with different shapes were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of ferric solution at 180 °C with the addition of different amounts of water to the EDA ratio in the reaction systems. The particle shapes obtained from the reaction systems include irregular polyhedra, hexagonal bipyramids, elongated bipyramids, and rhombohedra as the amount of EDA in the reaction systems increased. The electrochemical measurements of these different particle shapes as materials for lithium ion batteries showed that the best performance both in specific capacity and rate capacity were observed to be the shape of hexagonal bipyramid. The results showed that, beside the size of the particles, the shape of the particles being confined by specific surfaces is another important factor that dictates the electrochemical performance of α-Fe2O3. more...

The phase transformation of α-Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 was observed by the hydrothermal treatment of a ferric solution at 160–220 °C with the addition of both KOH and EDA into the reaction system. The reactions began with the formation of α-Fe2O3 hexagonal plates followed by the phase transformation involving the dissolution of the α-Fe2O3 hexagonal platelets, the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+, and the nucleation and growth of new Fe3O4 polyhedral particles. The activation energies for the phase transformation of α-Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 under hydrothermal conditions are estimated to be 96.4 ± 11, 113.1 ± 5, and 118.3 ± 11 kJ mol−1 for the addition of 0.5, 1 and 1.5 ml of EDA, respectively, which are about the same for the typical phase transformation of α-Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 in a hydrogen atmosphere. more...

Meteorology. Climatology ,QC851-999 - Abstract
El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a major source for teleconnections, including towards the tropical North Atlantic (TNA) region, whereby TNA sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are positively correlated with ENSO in boreal spring following an ENSO event. However, the Pacific–Atlantic connection can be impacted by different ENSO characteristics, such as the amplitude, location, and timing of Pacific SST anomalies (SSTAs). Indeed, the TNA SSTAs may respond nonlinearly to strong and extreme El Niño events. However, observational data for the number of extreme ENSO events remain limited, restricting our ability to investigate the influence of observed extreme ENSO events. To overcome this issue and to further evaluate the nonlinearity of the TNA SSTA response, two coupled climate models are used, namely the Community Earth System Model version 1 – Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (CESM-WACCM) and the Flexible Ocean and Climate Infrastructure version 1 (FOCI). In both models the TNA SSTAs respond linearly to ENSO during extreme El Niño events but nonlinearly to extreme La Niña events for CESM-WACCM. We investigate differences by using indices for all major mechanisms that connect ENSO to the TNA and compare them with reanalysis. CESM-WACCM and FOCI overall represent the teleconnection well, including that the tropical and extratropical pathways are similar to observations. Our results also show that a large portion of the nonlinearity during La Niña is explained by the interaction between Pacific SSTAs and the overlying upper-level divergence. more...

As it is well established that an association exists between congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) and cystic fibrosis gene mutations, we investigated CFTR(TG)m(T)n polymorphism within a Taiwanese population that exhibits a very low incidence of CF. Sixty-three patients with CBAVD and 86 age-matched normal control subjects were evaluated. Temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis was used for CFTR mutational analysis. No major CFTR mutation was found in the patient series. A single prominent CFTR mutation, IVS8-5T, was present; however, (50.8% of 63 cases and 33.3% of 126 alleles), and exhibited a high prevalence of 12 or 13 TG repeats (93.8% of 32 cases and 95.2% of 42 alleles with IVS8-5T). Although these results are similar to those of Japanese CBAVD patients, they are higher than the common frequency (about 21%) found among Caucasian CBAVD patients. The very high percentage (42.9%) of patients with no CFTR mutations is also an ethnic characteristic. We concluded that CBAVD patients from Taiwan, who express a very low incidence of CF, were less affected by CFTR mutations, with the exception of IVS8-5T linked to either 12 or 13 TG repeats, which does exhibit a high prevalence among CBAVD patients tested. more...

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) describes signals detected with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo up to the end of their third observing run. Updating the previous GWTC-2.1, we present candidate gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences during the second half of the third observing run (O3b) between 1 November 2019, 15∶00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and 27 March 2020, 17∶00 UTC. There are 35 compact binary coalescence candidates identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p_{astro}>0.5. Of these, 18 were previously reported as low-latency public alerts, and 17 are reported here for the first time. Based upon estimates for the component masses, our O3b candidates with p_{astro}>0.5 are consistent with gravitational-wave signals from binary black holes or neutron-star–black-hole binaries, and we identify none from binary neutron stars. However, from the gravitational-wave data alone, we are not able to measure matter effects that distinguish whether the binary components are neutron stars or black holes. The range of inferred component masses is similar to that found with previous catalogs, but the O3b candidates include the first confident observations of neutron-star–black-hole binaries. Including the 35 candidates from O3b in addition to those from GWTC-2.1, GWTC-3 contains 90 candidates found by our analysis with p_{astro}>0.5 across the first three observing runs. These observations of compact binary coalescences present an unprecedented view of the properties of black holes and neutron stars. more...

The biomembrane is postulated as the initial target when Platinum(II) complexes attack cells. In this work, a spin-labeling ESR technique has been used to study the effects of cis-DCDP, cis-DBDP, cis-DIDP, trans-DCDP, and cis-DADP on the permeability of human erythrocyte membrane. We monitored the reduction processes of the ESR signal of a nitroxide spin label, (TEMPO), which leaks out through the membrane and is reduced by the external ascorbate. Our results indicate that cisplatin and its analogues can enhance the permeability of membranes to small moieties such as TEMPO and ascorbate, and the differences between these compounds are related to features of the leaving group. In addition, changes in the order parameter of 5DS spin label in membrane indicate that hydrolysis of these Pt(II) complexes result in membrane damage. more...

The paper presents a new metric for the object-oriented design. The metric measures the complexity of a class in an object-oriented design. The metrics include operation complexity, operation argument complexity, attribute complexity, operation coupling, class coupling, cohesion, class hierarchy, and reuse. An experiment is conducted to build the metric system. The approach is to derive a regression model of the metrics based on the experimental data. Moreover, the subjective judgement by the expert is incorporated in the regression model. This ensures that the metric system is pragmatic and flexible for the software industry. more...

We report an optical and EPR spectral study of three hemoglobins, Hb I, II, and III, from the gill of the clam Lucina pectinata. Hemoglobin I reacts much more avidly with hydrogen sulfide than do Hbs II and III. The proximal ligand to the heme iron of each hemoglobin is histidyl imidazole. The acid/alkaline transition of ferric Hb I occurs with pK 9.6; those of ferric Hbs II and III with pK 6.6 and 5.9, respectively. At their acid limits each ferric hemoglobin exists as aquoferric hemoglobin. Broadening of the g = 6 resonance suggests that the bound water enjoys great positional freedom. Ferric Hb I, at the alkaline limit (pH 11), exists as ferric hemoglobin hydroxide. Ferric Hbs II and III, at their alkaline limit (pH 7.5), each exist as equal mixtures of two species. The low spin species with optical maxima near 541 and 576 nm and g values of 2.61, 2.20, and 1.82, are identified as ferric hemoglobin hydroxide. The high spin species, with optical maxima near 486 and 603 nm and g values of 6.71, 5.87, and 5.06, resemble Dicrocoelium hemoglobin and hemoglobin MSaskatoon. Here we show that Hbs II and III resemble hemoglobin MSaskatoon in which a distal tyrosinate oxygen ligated to the ferric heme iron at alkaline pH is displaced by water at acid pH. The H2S product of ferric Hb I is identified as ferric hemoglobin sulfide. more...

Although benzene, a well-known human carcinogen, has been shown to induce apoptosis in vitro, no studies have been carried out to confirm and characterize its role in activating apoptosis in vivo. The present study investigated the effects of benzene inhalation on the epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract including bronchioles, terminal bronchioles, respiratory bronchioles and alveoli of male Sprague-Dawley rats. Inhalation of benzene 300 ppm for 7 days induced apoptotic changes in the parenchymal components in the lung that significantly exceeded the events of programmed cell death in normal control tissues. Apoptosis was confirmed by the electrophoretic analysis of internucleosomal DNA fragmentation of benzene-exposed lung tissues, which exhibited 180-200 bp laddering subunits indicative of genomic DNA degradation. Furthermore, semi-quantitative analysis of intracellular localization of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling TUNEL) showed a significant (p < 0.001) increase in the apoptotic index calculated for bronchiolar 73.5%, terminal bronchiolar (65%), and respiratory bronchiolar 60.8% segmental epithelial components as well as alveolar (55%) epithelia. Analysis of immunohistochemical expression of apoptosis-related gene products also supported the hypothesis that benzene can induce apoptosis in chemosensitive target cells in the lung parenchyma. Quantitative immunhistochemistry showed a statistically significant increase p < 0.001 in the immunoreactive staining index for cytochrome c, Apaf-1 (apoptosis activating factor-1), DNA fragmentation factor, and representative cysteine proteases including caspase-1, caspase-2L, caspase-8 and caspase-9. Thus this is the first study of the respiratory system that demonstrates that benzene inhalation induces lung cell apoptosis as confirmed by DNA electrophoresis, in situ nick end labeling, and the upregulation of apoptosis-related gene products that facilitate caspase-cleaved enzymes which lead to cell degradation via programmed cell death. These responses may represent an important defense mechanism within the parenchymal cells of the respiratory system that reduce mutational hazard and the potential carcinogenic effects of benzene-initiated pathogenesis. more...

To investigate the inhibition capacities of carnosol, rosmanol, and epirosmanol, which are phenolic diterpenes from Rosmarinus officinalis, to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) formation in human blood and detect their scavenging activities to lipid free radical and superoxide anion in vitro. The antioxidant activities which were expressed with the inhibilities to lipid free radicals in the membrane lipid of cell and oxidized LDL formation were evaluated by TBARS assay and ESR method. The inhibition on the Cu2+-mediated oxidization of apo B formation in LDL was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy.Carnosol, rosmanol, and epirosmanol had an inhibitory activity to lipid peroxidation and oxidized apo B formation in human bloods LDL. The IC50 were 7-10 micromol/L. The antioxidant mechanism was related to the scavenging activities to lipid free radical.carnosol, rosmanol, and epirosmanol showed the activity in inhibiting LDL oxidation. more...

We report on the population properties of compact binary mergers inferred from gravitational-wave observations of these systems during the first three LIGO-Virgo observing runs. The Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 3 (GWTC-3) contains signals consistent with three classes of binary mergers: binary black hole, binary neutron star, and neutron star–black hole mergers. We infer the binary neutron star merger rate to be between 10 and 1700 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1} and the neutron star–black hole merger rate to be between 7.8 and 140 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1}, assuming a constant rate density in the comoving frame and taking the union of 90% credible intervals for methods used in this work. We infer the binary black hole merger rate, allowing for evolution with redshift, to be between 17.9 and 44 Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} at a fiducial redshift (z=0.2). The rate of binary black hole mergers is observed to increase with redshift at a rate proportional to (1+z)^{κ} with κ=2.9_{-1.8}^{+1.7} for z≲1. Using both binary neutron star and neutron star–black hole binaries, we obtain a broad, relatively flat neutron star mass distribution extending from 1.2_{-0.2}^{+0.1} to 2.0_{-0.3}^{+0.3}M_{⊙}. We confidently determine that the merger rate as a function of mass sharply declines after the expected maximum neutron star mass, but cannot yet confirm or rule out the existence of a lower mass gap between neutron stars and black holes. We also find the binary black hole mass distribution has localized over- and underdensities relative to a power-law distribution, with peaks emerging at chirp masses of 8.3_{-0.5}^{+0.3} and 27.9_{-1.8}^{+1.9}M_{⊙}. While we continue to find that the mass distribution of a binary’s more massive component strongly decreases as a function of primary mass, we observe no evidence of a strongly suppressed merger rate above approximately 60M_{⊙}, which would indicate the presence of a upper mass gap. Observed black hole spins are small, with half of spin magnitudes below χ_{i}≈0.25. While the majority of spins are preferentially aligned with the orbital angular momentum, we infer evidence of antialigned spins among the binary population. We observe an increase in spin magnitude for systems with more unequal-mass ratio. We also observe evidence of misalignment of spins relative to the orbital angular momentum. more...

Gravitational wave astronomy ,Radio transient sources ,Astrophysics ,QB460-466 - Abstract
We search for gravitational-wave (GW) transients associated with fast radio bursts (FRBs) detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst Project, during the first part of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (2019 April 1 15:00 UTC–2019 October 1 15:00 UTC). Triggers from 22 FRBs were analyzed with a search that targets both binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star–black hole (NSBH) mergers. A targeted search for generic GW transients was conducted on 40 FRBs. We find no significant evidence for a GW association in either search. Given the large uncertainties in the distances of our FRB sample, we are unable to exclude the possibility of a GW association. Assessing the volumetric event rates of both FRB and binary mergers, an association is limited to 15% of the FRB population for BNS mergers or 1% for NSBH mergers. We report 90% confidence lower bounds on the distance to each FRB for a range of GW progenitor models and set upper limits on the energy emitted through GWs for a range of emission scenarios. We find values of order 10 ^51 –10 ^57 erg for models with central GW frequencies in the range 70–3560 Hz. At the sensitivity of this search, we find these limits to be above the predicted GW emissions for the models considered. We also find no significant coincident detection of GWs with the repeater, FRB 20200120E, which is the closest known extragalactic FRB. more...

A novel supervised image feature extraction method, called local tensor rank one discriminant analysis (LTRODA) is proposed. LTRODA learns a series of rank one tensor projections with orthogonal constraints to produce compact features for images. To seek the optimal projections with prominent discriminative ability, LTRODA carries out local discriminant analysis. LTRODA is free from the matrix singularity problem owing to its trace difference based learning model, and a novel solving method ensures stability of the solution. Experimental results suggest that LTRODA provides a supervised image feature extraction approach of powerful pattern-revealing capability. more...

We obtain the global transonic solutions by solving numerically a set of equations describing advection dominated accretion flows around black holes. We find that the sonic points can locate themselves at almost any radius, independent of the viscosity parameter α and the polytropic index γ. more...

Gravitational wave astronomy ,Neutron stars ,Pulsars ,Astrophysics ,QB460-466 - Abstract
Isolated neutron stars that are asymmetric with respect to their spin axis are possible sources of detectable continuous gravitational waves. This paper presents a fully coherent search for such signals from eighteen pulsars in data from LIGO and Virgo’s third observing run (O3). For known pulsars, efficient and sensitive matched-filter searches can be carried out if one assumes the gravitational radiation is phase-locked to the electromagnetic emission. In the search presented here, we relax this assumption and allow both the frequency and the time derivative of the frequency of the gravitational waves to vary in a small range around those inferred from electromagnetic observations. We find no evidence for continuous gravitational waves, and set upper limits on the strain amplitude for each target. These limits are more constraining for seven of the targets than the spin-down limit defined by ascribing all rotational energy loss to gravitational radiation. In an additional search, we look in O3 data for long-duration (hours–months) transient gravitational waves in the aftermath of pulsar glitches for six targets with a total of nine glitches. We report two marginal outliers from this search, but find no clear evidence for such emission either. The resulting duration-dependent strain upper limits do not surpass indirect energy constraints for any of these targets. more...

CELL death ,APOPTOSIS ,GENES ,BENZENE - Abstract
Abstract  Although benzene, a well-known human carcinogen, has been shown to induce apoptosis in vitro, no studies have been carried out to confirm and characterize its role in activating apoptosis in vivo. Apoptosis was confirmed by the electrophoretic analysis of internucleosomal DNA fragmentation of benzene-exposed lung tissues, which exhibited 180â200 bp laddering subunits indicative of genomic DNA degradation. Furthermore, semi-quantitative analysis of intracellular localization of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling TUNEL) showed a significant (p p c, Apaf-1 (apoptosis activating factor-1), DNA fragmentation factor, and representative cysteine proteases including caspase-1, caspase-2L, caspase-8 and caspase-9. Neutron stars ,Gravitational waves ,Astrophysics ,QB460-466 - Abstract
On 2019 April 25, the LIGO Livingston detector observed a compact binary coalescence with signal-to-noise ratio 12.9. The Virgo detector was also taking data that did not contribute to detection due to a low signal-to-noise ratio, but were used for subsequent parameter estimation. The 90% credible intervals for the component masses range from $1.12$ to $2.52\,{M}_{\odot }$ ( $1.46$ – $1.87\,{M}_{\odot }$ if we restrict the dimensionless component spin magnitudes to be smaller than 0.05). These mass parameters are consistent with the individual binary components being neutron stars. However, both the source-frame chirp mass ${1.44}_{-0.02}^{+0.02}\,{M}_{\odot }$ and the total mass ${3.4}_{-0.1}^{+0.3}{M}_{\odot }$ of this system are significantly larger than those of any other known binary neutron star (BNS) system. The possibility that one or both binary components of the system are black holes cannot be ruled out from gravitational-wave data. We discuss possible origins of the system based on its inconsistency with the known Galactic BNS population. Under the assumption that the signal was produced by a BNS coalescence, the local rate of neutron star mergers is updated to 250–2810 $\,{\mathrm{Gpc}}^{-3}\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}$ . more...

tropical Atlantic Ocean ,observing system ,weather ,climate ,hurricanes ,biogeochemistry ,Science ,General. Including nature conservation, geographical distribution ,QH1-199.5 - Abstract
The tropical Atlantic is home to multiple coupled climate variations covering a wide range of timescales and impacting societally relevant phenomena such as continental rainfall, Atlantic hurricane activity, oceanic biological productivity, and atmospheric circulation in the equatorial Pacific. The tropical Atlantic also connects the southern and northern branches of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and receives freshwater input from some of the world’s largest rivers. To address these diverse, unique, and interconnected research challenges, a rich network of ocean observations has developed, building on the backbone of the Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA). This network has evolved naturally over time and out of necessity in order to address the most important outstanding scientific questions and to improve predictions of tropical Atlantic severe weather and global climate variability and change. The tropical Atlantic observing system is motivated by goals to understand and better predict phenomena such as tropical Atlantic interannual to decadal variability and climate change; multidecadal variability and its links to the meridional overturning circulation; air-sea fluxes of CO2 and their implications for the fate of anthropogenic CO2; the Amazon River plume and its interactions with biogeochemistry, vertical mixing, and hurricanes; the highly productive eastern boundary and equatorial upwelling systems; and oceanic oxygen minimum zones, their impacts on biogeochemical cycles and marine ecosystems, and their feedbacks to climate. Past success of the tropical Atlantic observing system is the result of an international commitment to sustained observations and scientific cooperation, a willingness to evolve with changing research and monitoring needs, and a desire to share data openly with the scientific community and operational centers. The observing system must continue to evolve in order to meet an expanding set of research priorities and operational challenges. This paper discusses the tropical Atlantic observing system, including emerging scientific questions that demand sustained ocean observations, the potential for further integration of the observing system, and the requirements for sustaining and enhancing the tropical Atlantic observing system. more...

A field experiment was designed to study the effects of nitrogen (N) source and urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) or nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD) on nitrous oxide (N2O) emission and N use efficiency (NUE) in a sandy loam soil. Six treatments including no N fertilizer (control), N fertilizer urea alone (U), urea plus NBPT (NBPT), urea plus DCD (DCD), urea plus NBPT and DCD (NBPT plus DCD) and nitrate-based fertilizer nitrophosphate (NP) were designed and implemented separately during the wheat growth period. Seasonal cumulative N2O emissions with urea alone amounted to 0.49 ± 0.12 kg N2O-N ha−1 and were significantly (P < 0.05) reduced to 0.28 ± 0.03, 0.31 ± 0.01 and 0.26 ± 0.01 kg N2O-N ha−1 by application of DCD, NBPT and NBPT plus DCD, respectively. Cumulative N2O emissions from NP were 0.28 ± 0.01 kg N2O-N ha−1. A single N2O flux peak was identified following basal fertilization, and DCD and/or NBPT inhibition effects mainly occurred during the peak emission period. The NP application significantly (P < 0.05) increased wheat yield by 12.3% and NUE from 28.8% (urea alone) to 35.9%, while urease and/or nitrification inhibitors showed a slight increase effect. Our results clearly indicated that the application of urea as basal fertilizer, but not as supplemental fertilizer, together with DCD and NBPT is an effective practice to reduce N2O emissions. The application of NP instead of urea would be an optimum agricultural strategy for reducing N2O emissions and increasing crop yield and NUE for wheat cultivation in soils of the North China Plain. more...

A set of experiments utilizing different implementations of the global ORCA-LIM model with horizontal resolutions of 2°, 0.5° and 0.25° is used to investigate tropical and extra-tropical influences on equatorial Pacific SST variability at interannual to decadal time scales. The model experiments use a bulk forcing methodology building on the global forcing data set for 1958 to 2000 developed by Large and Yeager (2004) that is based on a blend of atmospheric reanalysis data and satellite products. Whereas representation of the mean structure and transports of the (sub-) tropical Pacific current fields is much improved with the enhanced horizontal resolution, there is only little difference in the simulation of the interannual variability in the equatorial regime between the 0.5° and 0.25° model versions, with both solutions capturing the observed SST variability in the Niño3-region. The question of remotely forced oceanic contributions to the equatorial variability, in particular, the role of low-frequency changes in the transports of the Subtropical Cells (STCs), is addressed by a sequence of perturbation experiments using different combinations of fluxes. The solutions show the near-surface temperature variability to be governed by wind-driven changes in the Equatorial Undercurrent. The relative contributions of equatorial and off-equatorial atmospheric forcing differ between interannual and longer, (multi-) decadal timescales: for the latter there is a significant impact of changes in the equatorward transport of subtropical thermocline water associated with the lower branches of the STCs, related to variations in the off-equatorial trade winds. A conspicuous feature of the STC variability is that the equatorward transports in the interior and along the western boundary partially compensate each other at both decadal and interannual time scales, with the strongest transport extrema occurring during El Niño episodes. The behaviour is rationalized in terms of a wobbling in the poleward extents of the tropical gyres, which is manifested also in a meridional shifting of the bifurcation latitudes of the North and South Equatorial Current systems. more...

In this study we present preliminary results of flood calculation along Tagus Estuary, a catastrophic event that happened several times in the past, as described in historical documents, and that constitutes one of the major risk sources for Lisbon coastal area. To model inundation we used Mader’s SWAN model for the open ocean propagation with a 2 km grid, and Imamura’s TSUN2 with a 50 m grid covering the entire estuary. The seismic source was computed with the homogeneous elastic half space approach. Modelling results agree with historical reports. Synthetic flood areas correspond to the sites where there are morphological and sedimentary evidences of two known major events that stroke Lisbon: 1531-01-26 and 1755-11-01 tsunamis. more...

The evaluation of the rheological properties of suspensions is an important step in the ceramic slurries development. Mainly in wet processing, the rheological factor can be a limitation to the employment of determined raw material as well as the deflocculant agent. In this sense, the integrated approach of triaxial ceramics formulation and the mixture design come as an important aid to decrease the number of experiments necessary to determine the optimum properties of a system, which can be physical or rheological properties. The present work is directed towards to study the deflocculation of triaxial ceramic slurries (clay/feldspar/quartz) obtained from the mixture design, through the determination of a mathematical model that represents the ideal deflocculant concentration presented by each ceramic composition of the triaxial diagram. Aqueous suspensions (55% solids content) were prepared, using dehydrated sodium silicate (1.3 silica modulus) as deflocculant agent. Deflocculation curves were obtained. The results showed that the increase on clay mineral fraction lead the suspensions to higher deflocculant consumption. more...

el radón 222 ,espacios cerrados ,dosimetría ,exposición ,Geophysics. Cosmic physics ,QC801-809 - Abstract

Radon-222 ,indoors ,dosimetry ,exposure ,Geophysics. Cosmic physics ,QC801-809 - Abstract
222Rn and its daughter elements are considered dangerous for health. Exposure was measured to find the radon reference levels in Zacatecas. Indoor levels were measured since June 2000 until June 2001. RM-60 and RM-70 Geiger Muller-based systems were used to measure radiation background. The RM-70 system was coupled to a fan-filter and used to detect alpha decay from radon and its daughters. The mean exposure rates were in the range from 21mR/hr to 30mR/hr. The exposure rates were compared for different periods of time. more...

- Abstract
Importance: Although Micropterus salmoides rhabdovirus (MSRV) causes serious fish epidemics worldwide, the detailed mechanism of MSRV entry into host cells remains unknown. Here, we comprehensively investigated the mechanism of MSRV entry into epithelioma papulosum cyprinid (EPC) cells. This study demonstrated that MSRV enters EPC cells via a low pH, dynamin-dependent, microtubule-dependent, and clathrin-mediated endocytosis. Subsequently, MSRV transports from early endosomes to late endosomes and further into lysosomes in a microtubule-dependent manner. The characterization of MSRV entry will further advance the understanding of rhabdovirus cellular entry pathways and provide novel targets for antiviral drug against MSRV infection., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. more...
