Groundwater vulnerability maps are important decision support tools for water resource protection against pollution and helpful in minimizing environmental damage. However, these tools carry a high subjectivity along the multiple steps taken for the development of such maps. Additionally, the theoretical model on which they are based does not consider other important parameters, such as pollutant concentration or pollutant residence time in a given section of the aquifer, solely focusing on the theoretical travel time of a pollutant particle from a release point towards a target. In this work, an integrated methodology for the evaluation of potential (intrinsic) and actual vulnerability is presented. This integrated method, named Integrated Karst Aquifer Vulnerability (IKAV), was developed after the analysis of several study cases around the world and the application of multiple intrinsic groundwater vulnerability methods in a selected study area. Also, a solute transport model served as the basis to define additional parameters for vulnerability analysis for areas severely affected by anthropogenic practices. However, the focus of the transport model must not be mistaken to be hazards and risk mapping. A defined workflow and several criteria for parameters and attributes selection, rating and weighting, and vulnerability classification are presented here. The first application of the IKAV method was carried out in the Yucatán karst, demonstrating to be a reliable method for vulnerability estimation. Results demonstrated the scope of the IKAV method in highlighting important regional conditions, minimizing the subjectivity, and expanding the analysis of vulnerability.

Tackling the accelerated human-induced biodiversity loss requires tools able to map biodiversity and its changes globally. Remote sensing (RS) offers unique capabilities of characterizing Earth surfaces; therefore, it could map plant biodiversity continuously and globally. This approach is supported by the Spectral Variation Hypothesis (SVH), which states that spectra and species (taxonomic and trait) diversities are linked through environmental heterogeneity. In this work, we evaluate the capability of the DESIS hyperspectral imager to capture plant diversity patterns as measured in dedicated plots of the network FunDivEUROPE. We computed functional and taxonomical diversity metrics from field taxonomic, structural, and foliar measurements in vegetation plots sampled in Spain and Romania. In addition, we also computed functional diversity metrics both from the DESIS reflectance factors and from vegetation parameters estimated via inversion of a radiative transfer model. Results showed that only metrics computed from spectral reflectance were able to capture taxonomic variability in the area. However, the lack of sensitivity was related to the insufficient plot size and the lack of spatial match between remote sensing and field data, but also the differences between the information contained in the field traits and remote sensing data, and the potential uncertainties in the remote estimates of vegetation parameters. Thus, while DESIS showed some sensitivity to plant diversity, further efforts are needed to deploy suitable biodiversity evaluation and validation plots and networks that support the development of biodiversity remote sensing products.

The presence of salt water from the Tagus Estuary has been identified in the influent at Barreiro/Moita Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), Portugal. The intrusion occurs throughout damaged sections and direct vectors in the wastewater collection system, during high tide levels, changing the wastewater characteristics and impacting the WWTP process. This study designed models to quantify this problem, enabling more effective countermeasures within the right timing. The proposed models estimate the average volume of salt water and sulfate () load for each high tide period. The laboratory results show strong correlations between the influent electrical conductivity (EC) and percentage of salt water in WWTP inflow (0.9909), and between EC and concentration in WWTP influent (0.9797). The forecast models also show good correlation between the high tide levels with volume of salt water (0.9145) and load (0.9162) entering the system. Considering the total monthly inflow, the highest percentage of salt water registered in WWTP inflow was 3.6%. During high tide periods, critical situations have been assessed with up to 53.9% of salt water in the WWTP inflow, increasing energy consumption and costs in pumping stations. En este trabajo se realiza la optimización de la eficiencia del sistema Inversor-Máquina de Inducción (MI) del tipo jaula de ardilla, utilizando un algoritmo basado en el Método de Punto Interior (MPI), donde las variables de entrada son el par electromagnético y la velocidad del rotor en estado estacionario, y como salidas se obtienen los valores de la eficiencia óptima y del deslizamiento. Se calcula el valor del flujo óptimo del rotor que se utiliza como referencia en el lazo de control del flujo, en el control vectorial método directo de la MI. Se obtienen resultados de simulación donde se observa el incremento de la eficiencia en estados de baja carga. Se describe la instalación experimental usada en la implementación del control vectorial con máxima eficiencia del sistema, y se muestran los resultados experimentales obtenidos. Se realiza una discusión sobre los resultados y la utilización del Método de Optimización de Punto Interior.

The main goal of the recently started WindFarmSHM research project is the development, validation and optimization of monitoring strategies to be applied at the level of the wind farm. These strategies should be able to evaluate the structural condition of a set of wind turbines and their consumed fatigue life using the response to operation loads. In this context, a quite extensive experimental campaign is being performed at the Tocha wind farm, an onshore wind farm located in Portugal, which includes the simultaneous instrumentation of several wind turbines, adopting strain gauges, clinometers and accelerometers distributed in the tower and blades. This paper introduces the Tocha wind farm, presents the different layouts adopted in the instrumentation of the wind turbines and shows some initial results from the already fully instrumented wind turbine. At this preliminary stage, the capabilities of the very extensive monitoring layout are demonstrated. The results presented in this paper demonstrate the ability of the different monitoring components to track the modal parameters of the system composed of a tower and rotor and to characterize the internal loads at the tower base and blade roots.

Los pastos arbolados y arbustivos son vitales para la producción ganadera extensiva y sostenible, la conservación de la biodiversidad y la provisión de servicios ecosistémicos y se localizan en áreas que serán previsiblemente más afectadas por el cambio climático. Sin embargo, las características estructurales, fenológicas, y las propiedades ópticas de la vegetación en estos ecosistemas mixtos, como los ecosistemas adehesados en la Península Ibérica que combinan un estrato herbáceo y/o arbustivo con un dosel arbóreo disperso, constituyen un serio desafío para su estudio mediante teledetección. Este trabajo combina métodos físicos y empíricos para la estimación de variables de la vegetación esenciales para la modelización de su funcionamiento: índice de área foliar (LAI, m2 /m2 ), contenido en clorofila a nivel de hoja (Cab,leaf, μg/cm2 ) y dosel (Cab,canopy, g/m2 ) y contenido en materia seca a nivel de hoja (Cm,leaf, g/cm2 ) y dosel (Cm,canopy, g/m2), en un ecosistema de dehesa. Para este propósito se construyó una base de datos espectral simulada considerando las cuatro principales etapas fenológicas del estrato herbáceo, el más dinámico del ecosistema, (rebrote otoñal, máximo verdor, inicio de la senescencia y senescencia estival) mediante la combinación de los modelos de transferencia radiativa PROSAIL y FLIGHT. Esta base de datos se empleó para ajustar diferentes modelos predictivos basados en índices de vegetación (IV) propuestos en la literatura y en Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR). PLSR permitió obtener los modelos con mayor poder de predicción (R2 ≥ 0,93, RRMSE ≤ 10,77 %), tanto para las variables a nivel de hoja como a nivel de dosel. Los resultados sugieren que los efectos direccionales y geométricos controlan las relaciones entre los factores de reflectividad (R) simulados y los parámetros foliares. Se observa una alta variabilidad estacional en la relación entre variables biofísicas e IVs, especialmente para LAI y Cab que se confirma en el análisis PLSR. Los modelos desarrollados deben ser aún validados con datos espectrales medidos con sensores próximos o remotos.

Detecting and mapping subsidence is currently supported by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) products. However, several factors, such as band-dependent processing, noise presence, and strong subsidence limit the use of InSAR for assessing differential subsidence, which can lead to ground instability and damage to infrastructure. In this work, we propose an approach for measuring and mapping differential subsidence using InSAR products. We consider synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data availability, data coverage over time and space, and the region's subsidence rates to evaluate the need of post-processing, and only then we interpret the results. We illustrate our approach with two case-examples in Central Mexico, where we process SAR data from the Japanese ALOS (L-band), the German TerraSAR-X (X-band), the Italian COSMO-SkyMed (X-band) and the European Sentinel-1 (C-band) satellites. We find good agreement between our results on differential subsidence and field data of existing faulting and find potential to map yet-to-develop faults.

Land subsidence is an anthropogenic hazard triggered by different causes, one of them is groundwater overexploitation over aquifer systems composed for granular compressible sedimentary fill. One of the effects of this phenomenon is the generation and reactivation of ground failures, becoming risk points for aquifer pollution through the fast infiltration of contaminated water. A system of failures and fractures has developed in the Aguascalientes valley since 1980's when groundwater overexploitation became intensive. Currently, the entire valley present regional subsidence and several ground failures have developed; many of them crossing surficial water flows and sewage pipes, thus, inducing filtering of domestic wastewater to the subsoil and increasing the environmental hazard for the aquifer system. In this work, we present the results of a study to assess the surficial water infiltrations through a subsidence related ground failure crossing a small stream, which carries domestic wastewater. Additionally, we investigate the acquisition method of Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and the electrode placement more suitable to detect the flow of contaminated water through the studied ground failure. To find out the potential leakage, we use electric geophysical methods, applying Schlumberger, Wenner and dipole-dipole arrangements with electrode separations from 2.5 to 10 m in order to explore a depth from 9 to 30 m. The obtained results showed that the Schlumberger configuration appears to be more helpful to detect changes in the stratigraphy toward depth, while dipole-dipole and Wenner are more suitable to detect lateral variations such as the vertical wastewater leakage in the first 6 to 8 m depth. Resulted resistivity models showed that in the first 10 m depth, the contaminant flow follow with a vertical path through the ground failure, then, the it becomes horizontal, flowing through the more permeable soil strata. Therefore, for the studied sites, the filtration of domestic wastewater through ground failure does not represent an immediate hazard to the aquifer system. Nevertheless, ground failures crossing damaged wastewater pipes or contaminated surficial water flows in Aguascalientes Valley, could induce the infiltration of polluted water to the near surface strata, favoring a potential aquifer pollution in a long term.

Aguascalientes valley, located in the central part of México, is affected for a land subsidence process triggered by groundwater withdrawal since the 1980's. Currently, the occurrence and the reactivation of surface faults and earth fissures due to differential subsidence, is the main concern for government bureaus dealing with urban planning, because of the damages that these terrain discontinuities are able to cause in constructions and infrastructure. The deformation and rupture process produces an active linear discontinuity with a variable width of influence, where the constructions and infrastructure are prone to get damage. Therefore, the determination of this width of influence is critical for urban planning and hazard determination. In this work, the results of a geophysical seismic survey carried out in six surface discontinuities located in the subsidence area of the Aguascalientes Valley, are presented and discussed. The study included acquisition of seismic tomography profiles measured perpendicularly to the discontinuities, in order to obtain the P-wave velocity sections. The resulted P-wave velocity models show a low-velocity anomaly within the fracture trace with widths from 50 to 100 m. This anomaly is interpreted as a mechanically disturbed zone due to the activity of the surface fault, this is, due to the presence of fracturing caused to the adjacent material by the differential subsidence. The results suggest that the material in the disturbed zone, is experiencing a increase in secondary porosity, caused by the deformation and rupture process, and the subsequent generation of small fissures and voids. The results of this study have practical implications because the methodology allows defining the influence zone of an active discontinuity, and therefore, to establish a restricted width along the surface discontinuity. The definition of this restraint zone is a first step to produce a subsidence hazard zoning including not only the discontinuity trace but its width of influence.

In the Aguascalientes valley, middle Mexico, the demand of groundwater from the local aquifer system was suddenly increased after the late 1970s. Since then, several related problems have been occurring or become critical such as land subsidence, ground fissuring, and low-magnitude earthquakes. The most recent data of vertical deformation from PSInSAR, groundwater levels, and earthquakes, has provided critical information regarding the relationship amongst all these processes. In particular, that related to land subsidence, earth fissuring and seismicity. Regarding this, more satellite imagery and data from GPS stations are being revised as a possibility of a more generalized vertical deformation derived with low-magnitude seismicity. A particular seismic event recorded on 6 April 2019 has revealed critical information on the close association between vertical displacements occurred in active faults and low-magnitude seismic events.

Land subsidence due to groundwater withdrawal has been developing in the Aguascalientes Valley since the 1980's. Even though the affected area is close to 900 km2, and the sinking velocity is up to 10 cm yr−1 in some zones, the main concern for valley inhabitants and local government is the occurrence of subsidence-related cracks and failures, which are developed in the surface terrain and damage buildings and infrastructure. In order to face this problem, the state government of Aguascalientes set up in 1994 an interinstitutional committee which is integrated by four working groups: (1) technical studies, (2) equilibrium of the aquifer, (3) normativity and cartography, and (4) attention to damaged infrastructure. Each working group integrates several public and private agencies whose activities are influenced by the in-progress subsidence process. Federal, state and municipal water management agencies, as well as government bureaus of urban planning and public works are included in the committee. Also, the state university and some professional state associations such as civil engineers and earth sciences engineers are actively involved in the committee, along with the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics, which is the federal agency addressed to produce official cartography in Mexico. Some agencies participate not only in one working group but in those that fall in their interest, therefore, many agencies are contributing to several working groups objectives. In this work, we present a summarize of the work developed for the committee since its creation, and about its evolution and current organization. It is presented an analysis and discussion of the changes that the committee has experienced in their objectives and applied methods to address the evolution of the fissuring problem, and how their results have helped to prevent and to mitigate the land subsidence effects. Also, the mechanisms implemented to inform to the general public about the subsidence process and its effects; besides of the expected challenges that the committee will enfaces in the near and far future. This work intends to share the experiences of the committee hoping to be useful to other government agencies and earth scientists dealing with the land subsidence problem.

Large-scale transboundary conservation initiatives are necessary to respond to threats against tropical forests, and the jaguar (Panthera onca), a flagship and umbrella species in the Neotropics, is an ideal target species for such initiatives. We estimated jaguar abundance and occupancy of medium- and large-sized mammals and birds across a transboundary landscape in the northwestern Amazon biome using camera-trap data from 168 stations; specifically within three management regimes of indigenous and protected lands in Colombia (the indigenous reserve of Umancia), Ecuador (Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve), and Peru (Güeppi-Sekime National Park). Based on spatial capture-recapture models, we estimated jaguar density in the study area at 2.20 ± 0.44 individuals per 100 km2, implying an abundance of 322 jaguars (95% CI = 217–477). These estimates suggest that an entire mega-landscape, which also includes other protected areas and indigenous lands, could harbor as many as 2000 jaguars (95% CI = 1586–3498). We found that jaguar abundance and medium-to large-sized terrestrial vertebrate species richness (totaling 24 mammals and 4 birds) were similar under the three management regimes. Overall, our study indicates that a significant healthy population of jaguars can survive in this large-scale conservation corridor that crosses country borders, a place where protected areas and indigenous territories are key. This study is among the first to take a transboundary approach for jaguar conservation in a protected but still threatened part of the Amazon biome, inhabited by several ancient indigenous people. As a large forest block, this conservation landscape serves not only as an effective buffer against deforestation and a stronghold for jaguar populations and medium- and large-sized vertebrates, but it also secures the well-being of local people.

Este trabajo aborda la estimación de variables biofísicas de un pastizal de dehesa a partir de información óptica generada por sensores próximos y remotos. Las variables de contenido de humedad del combustible (FMC), contenido de agua del dosel (CWC), índice de área foliar (LAI), materia seca (Cm) y biomasa superficial (AGB) fueron estimadas en laboratorio a partir de muestras de vegetación tomadas simultáneamente a la adquisición de datos hiperespectrales del sensor Compact Airbone Spectrographic Imager (CASI) y del espectro-radiómetro de campo ASD FieldSpec® 3. A partir de la información espectral se han calculado diversos índices extraídos de la literatura y se han analizado las relaciones lineales existentes con las variables biofísicas medidas en campo. Los resultados muestran relaciones consistentes entre las variables biofísicas y los índices espectrales, especialmente en el caso de los índices basados en bandas del infrarrojo medio de onda corta (SWIR) y del red-edge, poniendo de manifiesto la importancia de estas regiones en la estimación de variables biofísicas en cubiertas de pastizal. Se han obteniendo coeficientes de determinación (R2) superiores a 0,91 y un error cuadrático medio relativo (RRMSE) de 21,4%, para los índices espectrales calculados con datos ASD; y R2 de 0,91 y RRMSE de 15,5% para los índices espectrales calculados con datos CASI. .

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2) emerged recently in several European countries, leading to extensive economic losses in the industry. In response to this new infection, specific inactivated vaccines were developed in Europe and full and rapid setup of protective immunity induced by vaccination was reported. However, data on the efficacy of these vaccines in an ongoing-infection scenario is unavailable. In this study we investigated an infected RHDV2 indoor industrial meat rabbitry, where fatalities continued to occur after the implementation of the RHDV2 vaccination, introduced to control the disease. The aim of this study was to understand if these mortalities were RHDV2-related, to discover if the dead animals showed any common features such as age or time distance from vaccination, and to identify the source of the outbreak. Anatomo-pathological analysis of vaccinated animals with the virus showed lesions compatible with systemic haemorrhagic disease and RHDV2-RNA was detected in 85.7% of the animals tested. Sequencing of the vp60 gene amplified from liver samples led to the recognition of RHDV2 field strains demonstrating that after the implementation of vaccination, RHDV2 continued to circulate in the premises and to cause sporadic deaths. A nearby, semi-intensive, RHDV2 infected farm belonging to the same owner was identified as the most probable source of the virus. The main risk factors for virus introduction in these two industries were identified. Despite the virus being able to infect a few of the vaccinated rabbits, the significant decrease in mortality rate observed in vaccinated adult rabbits clearly reflects the efficacy of the vaccination. Nonetheless, the time taken to control the infection also highlights the importance of RHDV2 vaccination prior to the first contact with the virus, highly recommendable in endemic areas, to mitigate the infection’s impact on the industry.

In the context of the BIOSPEC and FLUXPEC projects (http://www.lineas.cchs.csic.es/fluxpec/), spectral and biophysical variables measurements at leaf level have been conducted in the tree canopy of a holm oak dehesa (Quercus ilex) ecosystem during four vegetative periods. Measurements of bi-conical reflectance factor of intact leaf (ASD Fieldspec 3® spectroradiometer), specific leaf mass (SLM), leaf water content (LWC), nutrient (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, and Zn) and chlorophyll concentration were performed. The spectral measurements have been related with the biophysical variables by stepwise and partial least squares regression analyses. These analyses allowed to identify the spectral bands and regions that best explain the evolution of the biophysical variables and to estimate the nutrient contents during the leaf maturation process. Statistically significant estimates of the majority of the variables studied were obtained. Wavelengths that had the highest contributions explaining the chemical composition of the forest canopy were located in spectral regions of the red edge, the green visible region, and the shortwave infrared.

This research evaluates the fracture behavior of concrete with reactive magnesium oxide (MgO). Replacing cement with MgO is an attractive option for the concrete industry, mainly due to sustainability benefits and reduction of shrinkage. Four different MgO’s from Australia, Canada, and Spain were used in the concrete mixes, as a partial substitute of cement, at 5%, 10%, and 20% (by weight). The fracture toughness (KI) intensity factor and the stress–strain softening parameters of the wedge split test were evaluated after 28 days. The experimental results showed that the replacement of cement with MgO reduced the fracture energy between 13% and 53%. Moreover, the fracture energy was found to be correlated with both compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. A well-defined relationship between these properties is important for an adequate prediction of the non-linear behavior of reinforced concrete structures made with partial replacement of cement with MgO.

To encourage the reutilization of treated wastewaters as an adaptation strategy to climate change it is necessary to demonstrate their quality. If this is ensured, reclaimed waters could be a valuable resource that produces very little environmental impact and risks to human health. However, wastewaters are one of the main sources of emerging pollutants that are discharged in the environment. For this, it is essential to assess the presence of these pollutants, especially pharmaceutical compounds, in treated wastewaters. Moreover, the different treatment processes must be evaluated in order to know if conventional and natural treatment technologies are efficient in the removal of these types of compounds. This is an important consideration if the treated wastewaters are used in agricultural activities. Owing to the complexity of wastewater matrixes and the low concentrations of pharmaceutical residues in these types of samples, it is necessary to use sensitive analytical methodologies. In this study, the presence of 11 pharmaceutical compounds were assessed in three different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Gran Canaria (Spain). Two of these WWTPs use conventional purification technologies and they are located in densely populated areas, while the other studied WWTP is based in constructed wetlands which purify the wastewaters of a rural area. The sampling was performed monthly for two years. A solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was applied for the analysis of the samples, and the 11 pharmaceuticals were detected in all the studied WWTPs. The concentrations were variable and ranged from ng·L−1 in some compounds like diclofenac or carbamazepine to µg·L−1 in common pharmaceutical compounds such as caffeine, naproxen or ibuprofen. In addition, removal efficiencies in both conventional and natural purification systems were evaluated. Similar removal efficiencies were obtained using different purifying treatments, especially for some pharmaceutical families as stimulants or anti-inflammatories. Other compounds like carbamazepine showed a recalcitrant behavior. Secondary treatments presented similar removal efficiencies in both conventional and natural wastewater treatment plants, but conventional treatments showed slightly higher elimination ratios. Regarding tertiary system, the treatment with highest removal efficiencies was reverse osmosis in comparison with microfiltration and electrodialysis reversal.

Land subsidence due to ground water withdrawal is a problem in many places around the world (Poland, 1984). This causes differential ground settlements that affect masonry structures, because these structural materials do not exhibit an adequate performance beyond a certain level of angular distortion. This work presents the experimental and numerical results about a study regarding the performance of a full-scale thin-walled cold-formed steel building affected by ground differential settlements due to land subsidence. The experimental stage consisted in the construction of a test-building to be subjected to differential settlements in laboratory. The numerical stage consisted in performing a numerical non-linear static pull-down analysis simulating the differential ground settlements of the test-building. The results show that the structural performance of the tested building was very suitable in terms of ductility.

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has become a valuable tool for surface deformation monitoring, including land subsidence associated with groundwater extraction. Another useful tools for studying Earth's surface processes are geophysical methods such as Gravimetry. In this work we present the application of InSAR analysis and gravimetric surveying to generate valuable information for risk management related to land subsidence and surface faulting. Subsidence of the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico is presented as study case. Aguascalientes local governments have addressed land subsidence issues by including new requirements for new constructions projects in the State Urban Construction Code. Nevertheless, the resulting zoning proposed in the code is still subjective and not clearly defined. Our work based on gravimetric and InSAR surveys is aimed for improving the subsidence hazard zoning proposed in the State Urban Code in a more comprehensive way. The study includes a 2007–2011 ALOS InSAR time-series analysis of the Aguascalientes valley, an interpretation of the compete Bouguer gravimetric anomaly of the Aguascalientes urban area, and the application of time series and gravimetric anomaly maps for improve the subsidence hazard zoning of Aguascalientes City.

In this study we investigate different aspects of land subsidence and ground failures occurring in the west portion of Chapala lake basin. Currently, surface discontinuities seem to be associated with subsiding bowls. In an effort to understand some of the conditioning factors to surface deformation, two sounding cores from the upper sequence (11 m depth) were extracted for analyzing physical and mechanical properties. The upper subsoil showed a predominant silty composition and several lenses of pumice pyroclastic sand. Despite the relative predominance of fine soil, the subsoil shows mechanical properties with low clay content, variable water content, low plasticity and variable compressibility index, amongst some others. Some of these properties seem to be influenced by the sandy pyroclastic lenses, therefore, a potential source of the ground failure could be heterogeneities in the upper soil.

Surface failures have been observed in the valley of Aguascalientes since the early 1980's. Although, groundwater pumping began in the early 1950's but became intensive until the late 1970's, when many of the surface failures appeared. For this reason, surface deformation (surface failures and land subsidence) has been associated to groundwater withdrawal. Recent observations, however, suggest that some of these surface discontinuities are the result of natural geologic stresses rather than those associated groundwater decline, at least in its origin. Geologically, this valley is a tectonic graben flanked by two north-to-south trending normal faults, and seismicity of low intensity has been detected into the valley evidencing that the study area is seismically active. In this work, we present and discuss evidence showing tectonic discontinuities on the surface or at a shallow depth. Evidence presented in this investigation brings up uncertainty about the purely pumping-induced origin of fissuring in the valley, and allows addressing some key questions, for instance, are the surface failures caused by the combined stresses of pumping and tectonism? Is the current tectonism sufficient to cause some surface or deep failures?

Resolving the spatial and temporal dynamics of gross primary productivity (GPP) of terrestrial ecosystems across different scales remains a challenge. Remote sensing is regarded as the solution to upscale point observations conducted at the ecosystem level, using the eddy covariance (EC) technique, to the landscape and global levels. In addition to traditional vegetation indices, the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and the emission of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), now measurable from space, provide a new range of opportunities to monitor the global carbon cycle using remote sensing. However, the scale mismatch between EC observations and the much coarser satellite-derived data complicate the integration of the two sources of data. The solution is to establish a network of in situ spectral measurements that can act as a bridge between EC measurements and remote-sensing data. In situ spectral measurements have already been conducted for many years at EC sites, but using variable instrumentation, setups, and measurement standards. In Europe in particular, in situ spectral measurements remain highly heterogeneous. The goal of EUROSPEC Cost Action ES0930 was to promote the development of common measuring protocols and new instruments towards establishing best practices and standardization of these measurements. In this review we describe the background and main tradeoffs of in situ spectral measurements, review the main results of EUROSPEC Cost Action, and discuss the future challenges and opportunities of in situ spectral measurements for improved estimation of local and global estimates of GPP over terrestrial ecosystems.

This study evaluates three different metrics of water content of an herbaceous cover in a Mediterranean wooded grassland (dehesa) ecosystem. Fuel moisture content (FMC), equivalent water thickness (EWT) and canopy water content (CWC) were estimated from proximal sensing and MODIS satellite imagery. Dry matter (Dm) and leaf area index (LAI) connect the three metrics and were also analyzed. Metrics were derived from field sampling of grass cover within a 500 m MODIS pixel. Hand-held hyperspectral measurements and MODIS images were simultaneously acquired and predictive empirical models were parametrized. Two methods of estimating FMC and CWC using different field protocols were tested in order to evaluate the consistency of the metrics and the relationships with the predictive empirical models. In addition, radiative transfer models (RTM) were used to produce estimates of CWC and FMC, which were compared with the empirical ones. Results revealed that, for all metrics spatial variability was significantly lower than temporal. Thus we concluded that experimental design should prioritize sampling frequency rather than sample size. Dm variability was high which demonstrates that a constant annual Dm value should not be used to predict EWT from FMC as other previous studies did. Relative root mean square error (RRMSE) evaluated the performance of nine spectral indices to compute each variable. Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI) provided the lowest explicative power in all cases. For proximal sensing, Global Environment Monitoring Index (GEMI) showed higher statistical relationships both for FMC (RRMSE = 34.5 %) and EWT (RRMSE = 27.43 %) while Normalized Difference Infrared Index (NDII) and Global Vegetation Monitoring Index (GVMI) for CWC (RRMSE = 30.27 % and 31.58 % respectively). When MODIS data were used, results showed an increase in R2 and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) as the best predictor for FMC (RRMSE = 33.81 %) and CWC (RRMSE = 27.56 %) and GEMI for EWT (RRMSE = 24.6 %). Differences in the viewing geometry of the platforms can explain these differences as the portion of vegetation observed by MODIS is larger than when using proximal sensing including the spectral response from scattered trees and its shadows. CWC was better predicted than the other two water content metrics, probably because CWC depends on LAI, that shows a notable seasonal variation in this ecosystem. Strong statistical relationship was found between empirical models using indices sensible to chlorophyll activity (NDVI or EVI which are not directly related to water content) due to the close relationship between LAI, water content and chlorophyll activity in grassland cover, which is not true for other types of vegetation such as forest or shrubs. The empirical methods tested outperformed FMC and CWC products based on radiative transfer model inversion.

Two different ribonucleic acids were isolated from barley germs by use of the phenol (RNA I) and chloroform method (RNA II). After separation on Sephadex G-200 RNA I was found to be homogenous, whereas RNA II showed 5 components. Furthermore, both preparations differed in chemical composition and spectrophotometric specificity.

It is common in coastal cities as Rio de Janeiro, that buildings located close to the shoreline have their basements below water table level. In most cases, the engineering solution for these buildings is to design a massive anti-flotation slab to satisfy, principally, the issues related to structural dimensioning and calculation hypothesis. On the other hand, the execution of this solution imply in significant construction problems related to reinforced concrete watertightness and durability. This paper presents a case study about challenges and solutions devised to execute an anti-flotation, 1m thick, 1200m³ reinforced concrete slab for the new Museu de Imagem e Som (MIS) - Sound and Image Museum, located at 50m from the seashore, at Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, RJ. The results show that concrete proportions, concreting plan and pouring method adopted were decisive in obtaining a watertight structure, avoiding thus the employment of traditional waterproofing alternatives.

En las últimas décadas, el concepto de construcción sostenible se ha abordado en varios proyectos de ingeniería en el mundo. La búsqueda de materiales que proporcionen proyectos con alta vida útil es un consenso en todo el mundo. Dicho esto, muchos investigadores no consideran al hormigón un material atractivo desde el punto de vista de la construcción sostenible. Este artículo intenta desvelar este panorama y presentar una aplicación de hormigón de altas prestaciones en columnas estructurales con vistas a los aspectos de sostenibilidad. Es un estudio de caso de un edificio situado en el municipio de São Paulo. Se observó que el concepto de construcción sostenible está absolutamente de acuerdo con el uso de hormigón de altas prestaciones en columnas estructurales.

La localización de las áreas de ruptura de los sismos de Acapulco de 1962 (11 de mayo, M 7.1; 19 de mayo, M 7.0) y del sismo de 1957 (M 7.7) que ocurrieron en la región de Acapulco-San Marcos es crítica para estimar las dimensiones de la zona de acoplamiento fuerte de la interface entre las placas continental y oceánica y para evaluar posibles escenarios de ruptura en esta parte de la brecha sísmica de Guerrero. Las áreas de ruptura de estos eventos históricos no han sido determinadas con precisión a partir de datos sísmicos. La localización y las dimensiones de las rupturas se determinan a partir de los tsunamis registrados en los mareogramas de Acapulco y de Salina Cruz. Un cuidadoso análisis del mareograma de Acapulco muestra un levantamiento permanente de la costa de 15±3 cm y de 7±3 cm durante los sismos del 11 de mayo y del 19 de mayo de 1962, respectivamente. No se encontró un levantamiento permanente perceptible debido al evento del 28 julio de 1957. Para simular los tsunamis se consideraron mecanismos focales apropiados con dimensiones de ruptura (L y W), y dislocación promedio de la falla. La localización de las áreas de ruptura se investigó a prueba y error minimizando las diferencias entre los tsunamis observados y los simulados numéricamente. En el caso de los eventos de 1962 el mecanismo focal se ajustó para reproducir los levantamientos observados en la costa. Las áreas de ruptura del 11 y del 19 mayo de 1962 se localizan principalmente tierra adentro al NW y SE de Acapulco. La incertidumbre estimada en la localización de estas áreas es ±5 km. Para el sismo de 1957, la longitud de la ruptura, L, y sus extremos NW y SW se variaron hasta minimizar las diferencias entre la fase del tsunami observado en Acapulco y en Salina Cruz con la fase del tsunami simulado. La posición del área de ruptura se varió gradualmente con respecto a la costa hasta reproducir el patrón de resonancia del tsunami observado en Acapulco. Los resultados indican que el límite NW del área de ruptura del evento de 1957 se localiza a 30(±5) km al SE de Acapulco con una longitud, L = 90(±20) km. Se hace una estimación del hundimiento cosísmico en la Bahías de Manzanillo y Navidad mediante el análisis de las observaciones del tsunami obtenidas de dos mareógrafos y de un sensor de presión durante el sismo de Jalisco-Colima del 9 de octubre de 1995 (M 8). La posición y magnitud del máximo levantamiento cosísmico mar adentro sobre el plano de falla se w determina a partir de la simulación numérica de la propagación del tsunami. Para reproducir el tsunami registrado en Manzanillo y Navidad es necesario suponer un deslizamiento de la falla frente a Manzanillo 2 ó 3 veces menor que el deslizamiento promedio frente a Navidad. Estas nuevas restricciones en los desplazamientos cosísmicos verticales mar adentro y en la costa, obtenidas a partir del análisis del tsunami, podrán ser combinadas con los datos cosísmicos existentes de GPS en la costa y tierra adentro para lograr una inversión detallada de la distribución del deslizamiento sobre el plano de falla. doi: https://doi.org/10.22201/igeof.00167169p.2000.39.4.245
