Edge service caching can significantly mitigate latency and reduce communication and computing overhead by fetching and initializing services (applications) from clouds. The freshness of cached service data is critical when providing satisfactory services to users, but has been overlooked in existing research efforts. In this paper, we study the online low-latency and fresh service provisioning in mobile edge computing (MEC) networks. Specifically, we jointly optimize the service caching, task offloading, and resource allocation without knowledge of future system information, which is formulated as a joint online long-term optimization problem. This problem is NP-hard. To solve the problem, we design a Lyapunov-based online framework that decouples the problem at temporal level into a series of per-time-slot subproblems. For each subproblem, we propose an online integrated optimization-deep reinforcement learning (OIODRL) method, which contains an optimization stage including a quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) transformation and a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) method, and a learning stage including a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm. Extensive simulations show that the proposed OIODRL method achieves a near-optimal solution and outperforms other benchmark methods.

In this paper, we propose a diffusion-based unsupervised framework that incorporates physically explainable Retinex theory with diffusion models for low-light image enhancement, named LightenDiffusion. Specifically, we present a content-transfer decomposition network that performs Retinex decomposition within the latent space instead of image space as in previous approaches, enabling the encoded features of unpaired low-light and normal-light images to be decomposed into content-rich reflectance maps and content-free illumination maps. Subsequently, the reflectance map of the low-light image and the illumination map of the normal-light image are taken as input to the diffusion model for unsupervised restoration with the guidance of the low-light feature, where a self-constrained consistency loss is further proposed to eliminate the interference of normal-light content on the restored results to improve overall visual quality. Extensive experiments on publicly available real-world benchmarks show that the proposed LightenDiffusion outperforms state-of-the-art unsupervised competitors and is comparable to supervised methods while being more generalizable to various scenes. For users requesting popular contents from content providers, edge caching can alleviate backhaul pressure and enhance the quality of experience of users. Recently there is also a growing concern about content freshness that is quantified by age of information (AoI). Therefore, AoI-aware online caching algorithms are required, which is challenging because the content popularity is usually unknown in advance and may vary over time. In this paper, we propose an online digital twin (DT) empowered content resale mechanism in AoI-aware edge caching networks. We aim to design an optimal two-timescale caching strategy to maximize the utility of an edge network service provider (ENSP). The formulated optimization problem is non-convex and NP-hard. To tackle this intractable problem, we propose a DT-assisted Online Caching Algorithm (DT-OCA). In specific, we first decompose our formulated problem into a series of subproblems, each handling a cache period. For each cache period, we use a DT-based prediction method to effectively capture future content popularity, and develop online caching strategy. Competitive ratio analysis and extensive experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm has promising performance, and outperforms other benchmark algorithms. Insightful observations are also found and discussed.

Device discovery has a great impact on the performance of Bluetooth low energy (BLE). The performance of device discovery is highly related to the advertising mode. BLE has two advertising modes: pseudo-random delay advertising (RDA) and periodic deterministic advertising (PDA). Generally, PDA has low discovery latency but is susceptible to persistent collisions, whereas RDA does not suffer persistent collisions but has much larger discovery latency. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid advertising mode, called Deterministic and pseudo-Random delay Advertising (DRA), which has the advantages of both PDA and RDA. We develop an analytical model for DRA mode based on a two-dimensional discrete-time Markov chain, and analyze the expected discovery latency of DRA in a single-advertiser case and a multiple-advertiser case. Simulation shows the accuracy of our analytical model, and also verifies that DRA can achieve an excellent tradeoff between low discovery latency and robustness to collisions.

We address the reflection optimization problem for a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), where the RIS elements feature a set of non-uniformly spaced discrete phase shifts. This is motivated by the actual behavior of practical RIS elements, where it is shown that a uniform phase shift assumption is not realistic. A problem is formulated to find the optimal refection amplitudes and reflection phase shifts of the RIS elements such that the channel capacity of the target user is maximized. We first prove that in the optimal configuration, each RIS element is either turned off or operates at maximum amplitude. We then develop a method that finds the optimal reflection amplitudes and phases with complexity linear in the number of RIS elements. Some new and interesting insight into the reflection optimization problem is also provided.

Satellite-based greenhouse gases (GHG) sensing technologies play a critical role in the study of global carbon emissions and climate change. However, none of the existing satellite-based GHG sensing technologies can achieve the measurement of broad bandwidth, high temporal-spatial resolution, and high sensitivity at the same time. Recently, dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) has been proposed as a superior candidate technology for GHG sensing because it can measure broadband spectra with high temporal-spatial resolution and high sensitivity. The main barrier to DCS's display on satellites is its short measurement distance in open air achieved thus far. Prior research has not been able to implement DCS over 20 km of open-air path. Here, by developing a bistatic setup using time-frequency dissemination and high-power optical frequency combs, we have implemented DCS over a 113 km turbulent horizontal open-air path. Our experiment successfully measured GHG with 7 nm spectral bandwidth and a 10 kHz frequency and achieved a CO2 sensing precision of <2 ppm in 5 minutes and <0.6 ppm in 36 minutes. Federated learning (FL) has emerged as an appealing machine learning approach to deal with massive raw data generated at multiple mobile devices, {which needs to aggregate the training model parameter of every mobile device at one base station (BS) iteratively}. For parameter aggregating in FL, over-the-air computation is a spectrum-efficient solution, which allows all mobile devices to transmit their parameter-mapped signals concurrently to a BS. Due to heterogeneous channel fading and noise, there exists difference between the BS's received signal and its desired signal, measured as the mean-squared error (MSE). To minimize the MSE, we propose to jointly optimize the signal amplification factors at the BS and the mobile devices as well as the data size (the number of data samples involved in local training) at every mobile device. The formulated problem is challenging to solve due to its non-convexity. To find the optimal solution, with some simplification on cost function and variable replacement, which still preserves equivalence, we transform the changed problem to be a bi-level problem equivalently. For the lower-level problem, optimal solution is found by enumerating every candidate solution from the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) condition. For the upper-level problem, the optimal solution is found by exploring its piecewise convexity. Numerical results show that our proposed method can greatly reduce the MSE and can help to improve the training performance of FL compared with benchmark methods.

In this paper, we propose an iterative framework, which consists of two phases: a generation phase and a training phase, to generate realistic training data and yield a supervised homography network. In the generation phase, given an unlabeled image pair, we utilize the pre-estimated dominant plane masks and homography of the pair, along with another sampled homography that serves as ground truth to generate a new labeled training pair with realistic motion. In the training phase, the generated data is used to train the supervised homography network, in which the training data is refined via a content consistency module and a quality assessment module. Once an iteration is finished, the trained network is used in the next data generation phase to update the pre-estimated homography. Through such an iterative strategy, the quality of the dataset and the performance of the network can be gradually and simultaneously improved. Experimental results show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance and existing supervised methods can be also improved based on the generated dataset. Diffusion models have achieved promising results in image restoration tasks, yet suffer from time-consuming, excessive computational resource consumption, and unstable restoration. To address these issues, we propose a robust and efficient Diffusion-based Low-Light image enhancement approach, dubbed DiffLL. Specifically, we present a wavelet-based conditional diffusion model (WCDM) that leverages the generative power of diffusion models to produce results with satisfactory perceptual fidelity. Additionally, it also takes advantage of the strengths of wavelet transformation to greatly accelerate inference and reduce computational resource usage without sacrificing information. To avoid chaotic content and diversity, we perform both forward diffusion and denoising in the training phase of WCDM, enabling the model to achieve stable denoising and reduce randomness during inference. Moreover, we further design a high-frequency restoration module (HFRM) that utilizes the vertical and horizontal details of the image to complement the diagonal information for better fine-grained restoration. Extensive experiments on publicly available real-world benchmarks demonstrate that our method outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and visually, and it achieves remarkable improvements in efficiency compared to previous diffusion-based methods. In addition, we empirically show that the application for low-light face detection also reveals the latent practical values of our method. In this paper, we investigate how an illegitimate user can use a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to maximally degrade the secrecy performance of the legitimate system. We first consider the case when the illegitimate user performs eavesdropping only. A problem is formulated to minimize the system secrecy rate by optimizing the phase shifts of the RIS elements. We also consider the case when the illegitimate user works with full-duplex technology and can perform eavesdropping and jamming simultaneously through the RIS. A problem is formulated to minimize the system secrecy rate by optimizing the jamming power and the phase shifts of the RIS elements. Although the two formulated problems are nonconvex, they are optimally solved in this paper. Our results show that good eavesdropping performance can be achieved by placing the RIS at an appropriate position. Further, jamming plus eavesdropping can largely reduce the secrecy rate of the legitimate system.

This paper designs a helper-assisted resource allocation strategy in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) systems, in order to guarantee the quality of service (QoS) of the energy/delay-sensitive user equipments (UEs). To achieve a tradeoff between the energy consumption and the delay, we introduce a novel performance metric, called \emph{energy-delay tradeoff}, which is defined as the weighted sum of energy consumption and delay. The joint optimization of user association, resource block (RB) assignment, power allocation, task assignment, and computation resource allocation is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem with the aim of minimizing the maximal energy-delay tradeoff. Due to the non-convexity of the formulated problem with coupled and 0-1 variables, this problem cannot be directly solved with polynomial complexity. To tackle this challenge, we first decouple the formulated problem into a power allocation, task assignment and computation resource allocation (PATACRA) subproblem. Then, with the solution obtained from the PATACRA subproblem, we equivalently reformulate the original problem as a discrete user association and RB assignment (DUARA) problem. For the PATACRA subproblem, an iterative parametric convex approximation (IPCA) algorithm is proposed. Then, based on the solution obtained from the PATACRA subproblem, we first model the DUARA problem as a four-sided matching problem, and then propose a low-complexity four-sided UE-RB-helper-server matching (FS-URHSM) algorithm. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the proposed algorithms are guaranteed to converge to stable solutions with polynomial complexity. Finally, simulation results are provided to show the superior performance of our proposed algorithm in terms of the energy consumption and the delay.

Homography estimation is erroneous in the case of large-baseline due to the low image overlay and limited receptive field. To address it, we propose a progressive estimation strategy by converting large-baseline homography into multiple intermediate ones, cumulatively multiplying these intermediate items can reconstruct the initial homography. Meanwhile, a semi-supervised homography identity loss, which consists of two components: a supervised objective and an unsupervised objective, is introduced. The first supervised loss is acting to optimize intermediate homographies, while the second unsupervised one helps to estimate a large-baseline homography without photometric losses. To validate our method, we propose a large-scale dataset that covers regular and challenging scenes. Experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in large-baseline scenes while keeping competitive performance in small-baseline scenes. Optical clock networks play important roles in various fields, such as precise navigation, redefinition of "second" unit, and gravitational tests. To establish a global-scale optical clock network, it is essential to disseminate time and frequency with a stability of $10^{-19}$ over a long-distance free-space link. However, such attempts were limited to dozens of kilometers in mirror-folded configuration. Here, we take a crucial step toward future satellite-based time-frequency disseminations. By developing the key technologies, including high-power frequency combs, high-stability and high-efficiency optical transceiver systems, and efficient linear optical sampling, we demonstrate free-space time-frequency dissemination over two independent links with femtosecond time deviation, $3\times10^{-19}$ at 10,000 s residual instability and $1.6\times10^{-20}\pm 4.3\times10^{-19}$ offset. This level of the stability retains for an increased channel loss up to 89 dB.
