This study aims to identify the key design factors of a large-scale calorimeter and evaluate the accuracy of the simulation results using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) program. The design specifications of a domestic large-scale calorimeter were analyzed to determine the modeling and input conditions for the simulation. The simulation results of temperature, mass flow rate, and oxygen concentration reduction inside the duct were compared with the experimental results for heptane pool fires with diameters of 1.1 m, 1.24 m, and 1.44 m, respectively. To validate the accuracy of the simulation results, the deviations, calculated using FDS for the heat release rate as the experimental value, were found to be 19.12%, 11.86%, and 0.22% for temperature, mass flow rate, and oxygen concentration, respectively. Ultimately, the results of the heat release rate inside the duct obtained by the oxygen consumption method with FDS were found to be consistent with the experimental value, within 2.58%. However, the deviation of oxygen concentration is reduced as the deviation of mass flow rate increases for a constant heat release rate. This implies that for more accurate analysis, the heat loss and shape factors in the duct should be considered.

Prosthetics are an extension of the human body and must provide functionality similar to that of a non-disabled individual to be effective. Sports prosthetics such as the Flex-Foot Cheetah from Össur have demonstrated the value of creating devices that both provide mechanical support and introduce passive energy return to mimic forces otherwise produced at joints. These energy return mechanisms have not yet been demonstrated for upper limb prosthetics but could improve their effectiveness and provide a greater range of motion and control. Using multi-material 3D printing technology, we extend energy return components to upper limb prosthetics by developing novel force-sensing springs and applying them to a basketball prosthetic. The 3D-printed springs compensate for the forces otherwise generated by wrist and finger flexion while measuring the mechanical deflection. We discuss design guidelines, methods for integrated 3D printed energy return within prosthetics, and broader applications in assistive technologies.

The heat release rate is an important physical quantity that can quantitatively analyze the scale and intensity of fires. Recently, studies have been conducted to analyze the correlation between various parameters of combustibles and the maximum heat release rate measured in fire experiments, and to predict the maximum heat release rate of combustibles through correlation equations. However, the suitability of various parameters of combustibles that can be applied in the correlation has not yet been fully investigated. In this study, fire experiments were conducted using polyurethane (PU) foams of various shapes. Besides, the correlations between various combustible parameters and the maximum heat release rate were quantitatively compared and analyzed. The results confirmed that by appropriately using the combustible parameters, the relative error of the maximum heat release rate predicted by the correlation equation could be reduced from 34% to 12%.

In this study, fundamental research was conducted to analyze the correlation between the main design factors of large-scale cone-calorimeters and the heat release rate. The specifications for designing cone-calorimeters of 1 MW or higher, which have been constructed in foreign research institutes, were investigated. In addition, the relationship between the total amount of smoke generated in the plume and the heat release rate determined via the oxygen consumption method was reviewed. The temperature variation inside the duct and the oxygen concentration could be decreased as the height and size of the hood increased. These results could have an important effect on the mass flow rate and oxygen consumption coefficient when calculating the heat release rate. To accurately determine the heat release rate of a large cone-calorimeter is determined, further research is necessary to analyze the design factors considering not only the blowing capacity but also the shape of the hood and height from the fire source.

The increased treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) with second-generation antiandrogen therapies (ADT) has coincided with a greater incidence of lethal, aggressive variant prostate cancer (AVPC) tumors that have lost dependence on androgen receptor (AR) signaling. These AR-independent tumors may also transdifferentiate to express neuroendocrine lineage markers and are termed neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC). Recent evidence suggests kinase signaling may be an important driver of NEPC. To identify targetable kinases in NEPC, we performed global phosphoproteomics comparing several AR-independent to AR-dependent prostate cancer cell lines and identified multiple altered signaling pathways, including enrichment of RET kinase activity in the AR-independent cell lines. Clinical NEPC patient samples and NEPC patient-derived xenografts displayed upregulated RET transcript and RET pathway activity. Genetic knockdown or pharmacologic inhibition of RET kinase in multiple mouse and human models of NEPC dramatically reduced tumor growth and decreased cell viability. Our results suggest that targeting RET in NEPC tumors with high RET expression could be an effective treatment option. Currently, there are limited treatment options for patients with aggressive neuroendocrine prostate cancer and none are curative.Implications:Identification of aberrantly expressed RET kinase as a driver of tumor growth in multiple models of NEPC provides a significant rationale for testing the clinical application of RET inhibitors in patients with AVPC.

Conventional vision-based systems, such as cameras, have demonstrated their enormous versatility in sensing human activities and developing interactive environments. However, these systems have long been criticized for incurring privacy, power, and latency issues due to their underlying structure of pixel-wise analog signal acquisition, computation, and communication. In this research, we overcome these limitations by introducing in-sensor analog computation through the distribution of interconnected photodetectors in space, having a weighted responsivity, to create what we call a computational photodetector. Computational photodetectors can be used to extract mid-level vision features as a single continuous analog signal measured via a two-pin connection. We develop computational photodetectors using thin and flexible low-noise organic photodiode arrays coupled with a self-powered wireless system to demonstrate a set of designs that capture position, orientation, direction, speed, and identification information, in a range of applications from explicit interactions on everyday surfaces to implicit activity detection.

In the present study, safe management and value improvement of bamboo sunblind, which is an item of cultural heritage, were performed by adopting stable conservation treatment methods. The bamboo sunblind used in the present study was excavated from No. 1 catchment site in Baesanseongji, Busan. It was determined that the main material used to make the sunblind was bamboo, and herbal plants were used to weave the bamboo using lacquer as an adhesive agent. All contaminants and soil adhered to the sunblind was removed. Thereafter, the sunblind, which was recovered in the form of blocks, was washed separately after fixing it to a temporary plaster frame and to avoid the blocks from breaking during washing. Then, polyethylene glycol (PEG) impregnation was utilized for the reinforcement treatment. Based on the preliminary test results, the shape of the sunblind was fixed using a stainless-steel frame to prevent physical damage that may occur during the drying process. Thereafter, the bamboo sunblind was vacuum freeze-dried. PEG 20% (in ethyl alcohol) was applied as a surface treatment agent for stabilization the sunblind. After the surface treatment, the bamboo sunblind were joined together to fit the maximum width, and the rectangular shape of the sunblind was restored—as best as possible—while filling in the missing parts by maximizing the use of unknown members such as in the disturbed layers below bamboo sunblind surface. The conservation treatment was completed by fixing the bamboo sunblind into the fabricated frame.

In this article, we present a new type of Z -source inverter (ZSI) that replaces two inductors in the original quasi-ZSI with two transformers. It can produce a very high output voltage with the high value of the modulation index. Moreover, it enables both to provide a better power quality of output and to reduce the switching loss. In particular, the proposed quasi-clamped ZSI with two transformers give a unique solution to obtain high gain by reducing the turns ratio, rather than increasing it. Also, the leakage inductance of the transformer might cause huge voltage spikes across the inverter bridge. To deal with this problem, an effective clamping technique is proposed. As a result, this increases the overall efficiency of the system by utilizing the low-power switching devices. The characteristics of the proposed quasi-clamped ZSI with two transformers are comprehensively discussed with the detailed theoretical analysis. Thereafter, its performances are evaluated by both simulation and experimental tests.

This article proposes the new noninverting buck–boost ac–ac converter, which can minimize the reverse recovery loss by disabling the body diodes of switches and using the external fast recovery diodes for its current freewheeling. In particular, the proposed ac–ac converter takes advantages of metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistors and external fast recovery diodes to achieve the high efficiency. Also, it has the high reliability without the shoot-through and dead-time considerations in the circuit. Moreover, it can be simply implemented without employing the conventional commutation control. This results in decreasing the control complexity. As its proper application, a new type of dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) based on the proposed noninverting buck–boost converter is described. It enables to solve the voltage sag and swell problems by utilizing both positive and negative gains of converter. Then, the hardware prototype of proposed ac–ac converter and DVR are implemented to verify their practical effectiveness.

Like conventional two-switch leg converters, the three-switch leg converters also have short-circuit risks and dangerous shoot-through current is generated if switches of the same leg are turned-on simultaneously. In this article, a new dual-buck structure is proposed for three-switch leg converters. The proposed structure is reliable because of no shoot-through concerns and high quality of output waveforms can be obtained due to the reduction in pulsewidth modulation (PWM) dead-time. Unlike the conventional dual-buck three-switch leg which uses many passive components such as four current limiting inductors and three external diodes, the new dual-buck three-switch leg uses only one current limiting inductor with two external diodes. To verify the performance, the proposed three-switch legs are used in single-phase dual-output inverter and detailed theoretical analysis, simulation, and experiments are performed. Both continuous and discontinuous modulation schemes are applied and it has been figured out that discontinuous modulation scheme can improve the dc-link voltage utilization in the common-frequency mode of operation.

This article proposes a family of single-phase transformer based Z-source ac–ac converters (ZSACs). The proposed converters inherit all the benefits associated with the classical single-phase ZSAC, which are providing the buck–boost operation, maintaining or reversing the phase angle, and improving reliability. The proposed converters also have the improved input profile, continuous input current, and shared ground between input and output. Moreover, they use the turns ratio of transformers to produce the required voltage gain, which can be tuned by either increasing or decreasing the turns ratio of transformer depending on the configuration of Z-source structure. A safe-commutation strategy is also presented to achieve the soft commutation, which eliminates the voltage and current spikes without any additional snubber circuits. The features of proposed converters are comprehensively discussed with the detailed theoretical analysis. Thereafter, its performances are evaluated by both simulation and experimental tests.

Since the first identification of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in China in late December 2019, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread fast around the world. RNA viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, have higher gene mutations than DNA viruses during virus replication. Variations in SARS-CoV-2 genome could contribute to efficiency of viral spread and severity of COVID-19. In this study, we analyzed the locations of genomic mutations to investigate the genetic diversity among isolates of SARS-CoV-2 in Gwangju. We detected non-synonymous and frameshift mutations in various parts of SARS-CoV-2 genome. The phylogenetic analysis for whole genome showed that SARS-CoV-2 genomes in Gwangju isolates are clustered within clade V and G. Our findings not only provide a glimpse into changes of prevalent virus clades in Gwangju, South Korea, but also support genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 to aid in the development of efficient therapeutic antibodies and vaccines against COVID-19. © This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License.

This article proposes a new control method for the synchronous rectifier (SR) of phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converter to improve its efficiency in light-load condition. In general, the PSFB converter operates in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) in light-load condition to reduce the effective duty-ratio and core loss. However, the conventional control methods in the DCM cause undesirable conduction loss in SR because the output inductor current flows through the body-diode instead of the channel of SR. To figure it out, the proposed control method modulates the turn- on time of SR to eliminate the body-diode conduction. Moreover, it can be easily implemented without any auxiliary circuits. Therefore, it can improve the efficiency in light-load condition while keeping the advantages of DCM. The operating principle of PSFB converter in the DCM is first described. Thereafter, the proposed control method for SR is theoretically analyzed. Finally, its practical effectiveness is verified by experimental tests on the hardware implementation.

Mumps is the second-most reported infectious disease in South Korea; however, due to the low pathogen confirmation rate in laboratory diagnoses, we proposed a method for reevaluating the high incidence rate via the laboratory verification of other viral diseases. In 2021, 63 cases of pharyngeal or cheek mucosal swabs of suspected mumps cases in Gwangju, South Korea, were assessed for causative pathogens using massive simultaneous pathogen testing (TaqManTM Array Cards). More than one respiratory virus was detected in 60 cases (95.2%), 44 (73.3%) of which were co-detected. Human rhinovirus was detected in 47 cases, followed by human herpesvirus (HHV)6 in 30; HHV4 (17), human bocavirus (17), HHV5 (10), and human parainfluenza virus 3 (6) were also detected. Our findings suggest the need for further investigations on the pathogenesis of diseases mimicking mumps, which are considered to aid with appropriate public health responses, treatment, and the prevention of infectious disease outbreaks.

The output voltage of renewable energy sources is influenced by environmental conditions. To compensate for the variations of voltage, a buck–boost power conditioning system can be used. This article presents a full-bridge single-inductor-based buck–boost inverter. Its output voltage can be greater or lower than the input voltage depending on the controllable duty ratio. This inverter features bidirectional and reactive power flow operations with no high-frequency common-mode voltage. The unique feature of the proposed inverter is using a single inductor in the power train, which enhances the power density. Moreover, only two switches can operate at high frequency. This enables the inverter to be made with the high efficiency and simple circuit configuration. Based on the proposed full-bridge inverter, a novel cascaded buck–boost inverter is also presented. It retains all the benefits of the proposed full-bridge inverter. The theoretical analysis of the proposed full-bridge inverter is first explained in detail. It is then extended to a cascaded inverter. Thereafter, the practical effectiveness of the proposed inverters is verified with the experimental tests by implementing the hardware prototypes of 110 Vrms, 60 Hz, and 500 W for full-bridge single-inductor-based buck–boost inverter, and 220 Vrms, 60 Hz, and 1000 W for the cascaded inverter.

Recently, renewable energy has received considerable attention worldwide due to environmental problems such as climate change. However, there are still many problems to be solved to increase the penetration level of renewable energy sources in a power system. Above all, a power system with a high renewable penetration level requires an entirely novel operational strategy and control approach to achieve reliable operation by considering the intermittency of variable renewable energy sources. This paper proposes power-sensitivities-based indirect voltage control of renewable energy generators with power constraints. The proposed method realizes seamless control of the voltage by compensating with the reactive power if the real power of the distributed generator (DG) is insufficient due to its intermittency. To achieve the proposed method, the real and reactive power references of DGs are initially operated based on the power sensitivities between generation and loads if all the DGs operate within the power constraints. However, if at least one of the DGs reaches its constraint limit, the references can be modified using other sensitivities between real and reactive power generation enabling indirect voltage control of DGs. Therefore, a high level of renewable penetration in power systems can be accomplished with the proposed method. The proposed method is verified with several case studies that are based on a microgrid with practical data from a real island power system. Verification is carried out using the power system computer aided design and electromagnetic transient including DC (PSCAD/EMTDC™) simulation software.

Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease. SFTS is caused by the SFTS virus, a novel phlebovirus, and is spread by ticks. Methods: A 50-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of fever and was diagnosed with confirmed SFTS. An epidemiological investigation was conducted, and immunofluorescent antibody assays (IFAs) were performed to determine the role of the patient's three dogs in the transmission. PCR assays were performed using ticks that were collected with the dragging and flagging method from the patient's dogs and home. Results: PCR results were positive, and IFA confirmed an increased antibody titer. Although the reverse transcription PCR results of the three dogs were negative for SFTS virus, one dog had an elevated SFTS IFA immunoglobulin G (IgG) titer of 1:1,024. Moreover, a number of ticks were observed in the area surrounding the dog cages. Based on the findings of the patient interview, the patient was likely to have acquired SFTS by blood splash because he removed or burst ticks from the dogs with his bare hands. Although no tick bites were reported, tick transmission could not be ruled out. Studies have shown that only one in three individuals with a diagnosis of SFTS recalls a tick bite; thus, a definite exclusion of tick transmission in this case was not possible. Conclusions: The epidemiological findings of our case suggest a possible relationship between tick infestation in domestic dogs and SFTS virus transmission to humans. However, there is no direct evidence supporting this viral transmission route. Future studies are needed to further investigate a potential route of SFTS transmission by exposure to engorged tick blood or pet dogs.

In this study, the heat release rate of pipe insulation is analyzed by considering the installation status in accordance with the standards ISO 20632 and NFPA 274. The flame retardation rate was evaluated for six types of test samples: polyethylene foam covered with beaten silver (PE(S)), PE foam tapped (PE(N)), elastomeric closed cell thermal insulation (rubber), Japanese PE foam (PE(J)), Japanese polyurethane foam (PU(J)), and Japanese styro form (ST(J)) by EN 13501-1 and fire growth curve. The results show that PU(J), PE(J), and PE(N) were Class E and ultra-fast, NFPA 274 test standards for Class D and Fast, and PE(S) by ISO 20632 were Class C and Slow, and Rubber and ST(J) were Classes and Low. However, the changes in the time-averaged maximum heat release rate for each test standard (ISO 20632 and NFPA 274) to evaluate the flame retardation rate differed among identical materials. This means that the fundamental study is necessary to analyze the more accurate reasons.

This study proposes the practical power management of integrated system with photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) to solve the line congestion and voltage problems in a distribution system while considering the electricity price and state of charge (SOC) of ESS. In addition, the proper power management of PV/ESS integrated system (PEIS) enables to increase the hosting capacity of renewable energies in a distribution system and to maximize the profit of independent power producer (IPP). In this study, the real power management of PEIS of 100 kW is implemented in practice and tested with the actual measurements for 3 days. The results show that the proposed method deals with the line congestion problem effectively and efficiently while increasing the profit of IPP by 11%. In particular, the reactive power control based on the international electrotechnical commission (IEC) standard, IEC 61850-90-7 is applied to the PEIS, and it can successfully mitigate the variations of voltage in a distribution system.

The implementation of distributed generation (DG) becomes more common while causing a challenge to maintain the voltage stability in a power system. The optimal placement of multiple DGs in a planning stage can effectively solve this problem. In many cases, the best placement has been determined by the small-signal study like the modal analysis. However, it is acceptable only if the linearization of large-scale nonlinear power system is accurate. To overcome this, this paper proposes the new optimal placement algorithm for multiple DGs based on the model-free Lyapunov exponent estimation to maintain the voltage of system stable. In other words, the individual Lyapunov exponents of all buses are firstly estimated to determine the candidates for optimal placement of DGs. Then, the maximum Lyapunov exponent for each candidate is calculated to decide which bus is the best place to improve the voltage stability of system. Several time-domain simulation studies are carried out to verify the effectiveness of proposed algorithm. In particular, its performance is compared with that of the conventional method. The results show that the optimal placement of multiple DGs determined by the proposed algorithm improves the voltage stability of system much more effectively.

This paper presents a power-smoothing scheme of a variable-speed wind turbine generator (VSWTG) that employs separate control gains for the over-frequency section (OFS) and under-frequency section (UFS). In the proposed scheme, an additional proportional control loop based on the system frequency deviation operating in conjunction with maximum power point tracking operation is used. In the OFS, to improve the energy-storing capability, the scheme suggests the gain of the frequency deviation control loop, which is set to be monotonously decreasing with the rotor speed while being significantly larger than that in the UFS. In the UFS, to improve the energy-releasing capability while preventing over-deceleration, the gain of the frequency deviation control loop is set to be a linear function of the rotor speed. The simulation results under continuously varying wind speeds with different wind patterns and wind speeds clearly demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly mitigates the output power fluctuations of a VSWTG. The proposed scheme keeps the frequency within a narrow range, thereby reducing the required primary frequency control reserve for regulating the frequency under normal operations.

Significance Small cell carcinoma of the bladder (SCCB) is a lethal variant of bladder cancer with no effective treatment. A lack of available preclinical models and clinical cohorts impedes our understanding of its molecular pathogenesis. In this study, we provided a tumor model as functional evidence showing that SCCB and other bladder cancer phenotypes can be derived from normal human urothelial cells. We further demonstrated that SCCB has a distinct transcriptome and identified SCCB-associated cell surface proteins (CSPs) that can be further evaluated as potential therapeutic targets. We show that our model shares CSP profile with clinical SCCB samples. Our findings create a foundation to understand the molecular underpinnings of SCCB and provide tools for developing therapeutic strategies., Small cell carcinoma of the bladder (SCCB) is a rare and lethal phenotype of bladder cancer. The pathogenesis and molecular features are unknown. Here, we established a genetically engineered SCCB model and a cohort of patient SCCB and urothelial carcinoma samples to characterize molecular similarities and differences between bladder cancer phenotypes. We demonstrate that SCCB shares a urothelial origin with other bladder cancer phenotypes by showing that urothelial cells driven by a set of defined oncogenic factors give rise to a mixture of tumor phenotypes, including small cell carcinoma, urothelial carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Tumor-derived single-cell clones also give rise to both SCCB and urothelial carcinoma in xenografts. Despite this shared urothelial origin, clinical SCCB samples have a distinct transcriptional profile and a unique transcriptional regulatory network. Using the transcriptional profile from our cohort, we identified cell surface proteins (CSPs) associated with the SCCB phenotype. We found that the majority of SCCB samples have PD-L1 expression in both tumor cells and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, suggesting that immune checkpoint inhibitors could be a treatment option for SCCB. We further demonstrate that our genetically engineered tumor model is a representative tool for investigating CSPs in SCCB by showing that it shares a similar a CSP profile with clinical samples and expresses SCCB–up-regulated CSPs at both the mRNA and protein levels. Our findings reveal distinct molecular features of SCCB and provide a transcriptional dataset and a preclinical model for further investigating SCCB biology.
