The development of a high [T.sub.c] superconducting (HTS) single-chip receiver antenna combined with coplanar waveguide (CPW) impedance matching circuits and multi-bandpass filters is demonstrated.

The design of slot dipole antennas with a bandpass filters which was developed by using electrical circuits and electromagnetic field simulator is described.

A new design formula of an electrically small antenna (ESA) was proposed that is, an antenna whose dimension is much smaller than one wavelength, with a miniaturized matching circuit. For this, a slot loop antenna with a 2-pole matching circuit using CPW was designed and its performance was tested.

The design method of the meanderline quarter-wave-length resonator bandpass filter (BPF) was introduced for more size reduction of the high temperature superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) BPF. The frequency and number of the attenuation poles were designed in order to control the attenuation poles by adjusting the meanderline intervals and shapes of the cross-coupling section.

A superconducting slot antenna and a a Si-CMOS low noise amplifier (LNA) combined with a broadband matching circuit composed of coplanar waveguide (CPW) meanderline resonators is described and discussed.

The design and performance of a LiNbO[subscript 3] optical modulator and switch, with superconducting circuits, is examined and reported.

Research is presented describing the study and development of a superconducting device which operates on a slot antenna basis with matching circuit broadband impedance.

Miniaturized coplanar waveguide bandpass filters are examined with emphasis on their design and capabilities. The use of high-temperature superconductors in these filters and the application of coplanar waveguide to reduce their size are examined.

Research is presented concerning the bandwidth and gain characteristics of a high temperature superconducting broadband booster circuit which can be used with a LiNbO3 optical modulator. The design theory is discussed.

Background: Combination therapy with different classes of antihypertensive drugs often is needed to achieve controlled blood pressure (BP). The combination of an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (AIIA) and a calcium antagonist is a preferred option for reducing uncontrolled BP.Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the clinical efficacy and tolerability of nilvadipine, a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist, in combination with an AIIA.Methods: Patients with essential hypertension whose BP was not controlled by an AIIA alone were eligible for this multicenter, open-label, uncontrolled study. One of 3 AIIAs (candesartan cilexetil, losartan potassium, or valsartan) was given for at least 10 weeks before the addition of nilvadipine (daily dose, 4 or 8 mg orally). This combination therapy was given for 8 weeks. BP and heart rate were measured between 2 and 4 weeks before and 0, 4, and 8 weeks after the start of combination therapy. Adverse events were monitored at each visit.Results: Thirty-one patients (18 women [58.1%], 13 men [41.9%]; mean [SD] age, 58.5 [10.5] years) were enrolled. At weeks 4 and 8 of combination therapy, mean systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) were significantly decreased (P<0.01) (at week 8, by 22.0 mm Hg and 12.5 mm Hg, respectively). The mean BP-lowering effect did not differ significantly between the 3 AIIAs tested. Pulse pressure also decreased significantly at week 8, by 9.6 mm Hg (P<0.01). The responder rate (ie, the percentage of patients with DBP <90 mm Hg or a decrease in DBP >/= 10 mm Hg) was 72.0% at week 8. Three patients experienced a total of 4 adverse events: mild or severe flushing, mild headache, and mild palpitation. All of these symptoms resolved after nilvadipine treatment was discontinued.Conclusions: Nilvadipine in combination with an AIIA showed good antihypertensive efficacy and was well tolerated in the hypertensive patients in this study. This combination also significantly decreased pulse pressure, suggesting that this combination therapy also may have a beneficial effect in elderly patients with isolated systolic hypertension. Fhos1 is a mammalian formin-family protein, and functions as an organizer of the actin microfilament. Here we have cloned human and mouse cDNAs for a novel Fhos homolog, designated Fhos2. The messages for Fhos2 are expressed in the heart, kidney, and brain, where the Fhos1 mRNAs are not abundant. Two splice variants of Fhos2 exist in a tissue-specific manner; the longer variant Fhos2L is the major form in the heart, whereas the kidney and brain predominantly express Fhos2S that encodes a shorter protein. Over-expression of an active form of the two Fhos2 variants, as well as that of Fhos1, induces the formation of actin stress fibers in HeLa cells, suggesting that Fhos2 acts as an actin-organizing protein. Biochemical analysis using rat cardiomyoblastic H9c2 (2-1) cells reveals that endogenous Fhos2 is enriched in the intermediate filament fraction. Consistent with this, Fhos2 localizes to the nestin intermediate filament but not to other cytoskeletons, as demonstrated by staining of H9c2 (2-1) cells with anti-Fhos2 antibodies. Furthermore, Fhos2 is present in nestin-expressing neuroepithelial cells of the fetal rat brain. Thus, Fhos2 not only has the actin-organizing activity but also associates with nestin, which may imply a Fhos2-mediated link between the nestin intermediate filament and actin microfilament.

For PCR-based genotyping using polymorphic microsatellite markers, DNA from decomposed postmortem human tissues was fractionated into six groups according to molecular size. The minimum required amounts of this degraded DNA, for detecting alleles at five microsatellite loci (ACTBP2, CMAG, HUMTH01, CYP19, and LPL) and one minisatellite locus (MCT118) were investigated respectively. The allele patterns were detected by electrophoresis of the PCR products on a 6%-denaturing polyacrylamide gel following silver staining. The detection of alleles for the loci with large allele size required more template DNA with higher molecular size than for that with small allele size. Amounts from 0.3 ng to 5 ng were needed for allele detection on genomic DNA from fresh blood. When the decomposed DNA mixture was used as the template, approximately ten times the amount of genomic DNA was required to detect alleles at the three loci of LPL, CYP19 and HUMTH01, while 24 to 67 times was required for the loci, CMAG, ACTBP2 and MCT118. It was demonstrated that a minimum molecular, size and amount of template DNA was needed for amplifying alleles of the six loci, and degraded DNA less than minimum size in the samples would prevent the detection of the loci which have large allele size.
