We present multi-diagnostic results from laser-plasma experiment at ~10^22 W/cm^2, including optical and high-order harmonics, back-reflection, soft x-rays, keV x-rays, and sub-MeV to MeV x-rays, simultaneously with important laser parameters. We describe our experiment performed with the J-KAREN-P laser at the intensity approaching 10^22 W/cm^2. In particular, we present the results obtained with hard x-ray (0.1-3 MeV) spectrographs comprising 10 scintillators and a method to reconstruct the x-ray spectra., 3rd International Conference on Nuclear Photonics (NP2020)

Ultra-high intensities open a way towards Terawatt and potentially Petawatt gamma-ray pulses in the so called Gamma Flare regime. We performed our first experiment towards this regime with the J-KAREN-P laser operating at intensities close to 10^22 W/cm^2. In this presentation I will overview the experiment, including very bright hard x-ray generation (sub-MeV to a few-MeV spectral range), high-order harmonic generation (30 to 70 eV), and multiple additional diagnostics revealing information on preplasma (properties of reflected 1st, 2nd, and 3rd harmonics and back-reflection). I will compare these results with the integrated HD and PIC simulations., OPTO-2021 Symposium on Photon and Beam Science

Synchrotron generated monochromatic X-rays can be precisely tuned to the K-shell energy of high Z materials resulting in the release of the Auger electrons. In this work, we have employed this mechanism to destruct tumor spheroids. We first loaded gadolinium onto the surface of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) producing gadolinium-loaded MSN (Gd-MSN). When Gd-MSN was added to the tumor spheroids, we observed efficient uptake and uniform distribution of Gd-MSN. Gd-MSN also can be taken up into cancer cells and localize to a site just outside of the cell nucleus. Exposure of the Gd-MSN containing tumor spheroids to monochromatic X-ray beams resulted in almost complete destruction. Importantly, this effect was observed at an energy level of 50.25 keV, but not with 50.0 keV. These results suggest that it is possible to use precisely tuned monochromatic X-rays to destruct tumor mass loaded with high Z materials, while sparing other cells. Our experiments point to the importance of nanoparticles to facilitate loading of gadolinium to tumor spheroids and to localize at a site close to the nucleus. Because the nanoparticles can target to tumor, our study opens up the possibility of developing a new type of radiation therapy for cancer.

The initial stages of the femtosecond (fs) laser ablation process of gold, platinum, and tungsten were observed by single-shot soft x-ray imaging technique. The formation and evolution of soft x-ray Newton’s rings (NRs) were found for the first time. The soft x-ray NRs are caused by the interference between the bulk ablated surface and nanometer-scale thin spallation layer; they originate from the metal surface at pump energy fluence of around 1 J/cm2 and work as a flying soft x-ray beam splitter.

Xenon clusters were irradiated with plasma soft-x-ray laser pulses (having a wavelength of 13.9 nm, time duration of 7 ps, and intensities of up to 10 GW/cm2). The laser photon energy was high enough to photoionize 4d core electrons. The cross section is large due to a giant resonance. The interaction was investigated by measuring the electron energy spectra. The photoelectron spectra for small clusters indicate that the spectral width due to the 4d hole significantly broadens with increasing cluster size. For larger clusters, the electron energy spectra evolve into a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, as a strongly coupled cluster nanoplasma is generated.

Properties of nitrogen cluster plasmas produced by an intense, ultrashort laser pulse have been investigated numerically and experimentally. The classical dynamics simulations show that on increasing the cluster size a plasma with residual electron energy above 1 keV can be created due to collisional heating, which is considerably higher than the value obtained with a conventional low-density gas target. Experimentally, nitrogen gas jets created by two types of nozzles were irradiated with a laser pulse of 55 fs, up to 1.2× 1017 / cm2. A seeded gas jet consisting of nitrogen and helium was also employed to promote the production of large clusters. The influences of the shape of nozzle, the seeded gas, and the gas jet stagnation pressure on the properties of plasmas were examined by spectroscopic observations. K -shell emissions showed that for the gas jet using the conical nozzle the electrons underwent intense collisional heating within the large clusters, resulting in the production of highly charged ions. In contrast, the emissions observed with the capillary nozzle exhibited the characteristics of a cold plasma without suffering substantial electron heating, indicating the absence of large clusters. That is, the differences between the two types of nozzles in the efficiency of electron heating and subsequent residual energies after the passage of the laser pulse, which are strongly dependent upon the cluster size, drastically changed the properties of the produced plasmas. The reason that for the capillary gas jet the plasma density deduced from the recombination spectra was significantly higher than the value obtained using the conical nozzle is also given by the difference in residual electron energy.

In this experiment, the laser pulses consisted of two pulses with 4 ps duration, separated by 1.2 ns. Strong amplification in the nickel-like silver and tin x-ray lasers at the wavelengths of 13.9 and 12.0 nm was demonstrated with pumping energy of 12 and 14 J, respectively, and gain-saturation behavior could be seen. A hydrodynamics simulation coupled with a collisional-radiative model was performed under the present experimental conditions, and the calculated result was compared with the experimental results.
