21. A Maximum Mass-to-Size Ratio in Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity

Abstract

We derive a modified Buchdahl inequality for scalar-tensor theories of gravity. In general relativity, Buchdahl has shown that the maximum value of the mass-to-size ratio, $2M/R$, is 8/9 for static and spherically symmetric stars under some physically reasonable assumptions. We formally apply Buchdahl's method to scalar-tensor theories and obtain theory-independent inequalities. After discussing the mass definition in scalar-tensor theories, these inequalities are related to a theory-dependent maximum mass-to-size ratio. We show that its value can exceed not only Buchdahl's limit, 8/9, but also unity, which we call {\it the black hole limit}, in contrast to general relativity. Next, we numerically examine the validity of the assumptions made in deriving the inequalities and the applicability of our analytic results. We find that the assumptions are mostly satisfied and that the mass-to-size ratio exceeds both Buchdahl's limit and the black hole limit. However, we also find that this ratio never exceeds Buchdahl's limit when we impose the further condition, $\rho-3p\ge0$, on the density, $\rho$, and pressure, $p$, of the matter., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures and 1 table

41. Effects of cesium-substituted silicotungstic acid doped with polybenzimidazole membrane for the application of medium temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells

Abstract

Inorganic-organic composite membranes were prepared by using partly cesium-substituted silicotungstic acid (CHS-WSiA) and polybenzimidazole (PBI, MRS0810H) for medium temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells (MT-PEFCs). Cesium hydrogen sulfate (CsHSO4, CHS) and silicotungstic acid (H4SiW12O40, WSiA) were milled to obtain 0.5CHS-0.5WSiA composites by dry and wet mechanical millings. N,Ndimethylacetamide (DMAc) was used as a disperse medium in the preparation of the inorganic solid acids by wet mechanical milling and also a casting agent for fabrication of membrane. Finally, flexible and homogeneous composite membranes with several phosphoric acid doping levels (PADLs) were obtained. The wet mechanical milling using DMAc was found to effectively promote good substitution of H+ ion in WSiA by Cs+ ion of CHS and promoted the formation of smaller grain sizes of composites, compared with dry milling. A high maximum power density of 378 mWcm-2 and a good constant current stability test were obtained from a single cell test using the PBI composite membrane containing 20 wt% of 0.5CHS-0.5WSiA from wet milling and phosphoric acid doping level (PADL) of 8 mol, at 150 °C under an anhydrous condition. Wet milling CHS-WSiA crystallites were highly dispersed in PBI to give homogenized membranes and played a significant role in the enhancemance of acidity by increasing the number of proton sites in the electrolyte membrane. After the addition of CHS-WSiA into PBI membrane, the acid and water retention properties were improved and incorporated as new proton conduction path by adsorbing phosphoric acid in these composite electrolyte membranes. These observations suggest that composite membranes with 8 mol of PADL are good promising PA dopedmembranes with effective electrochemical properties for the medium temperature fuel cells.

42. Ordered arrays of electrostatically assembled SiO2–SiO2 composite particles by electrophoresis-induced stimulation.

Abstract

Monodispersed silica (SiO2) nano- and microparticles can be fabricated by the sol-gel process. For device fabrication, precise formation of composite particles with a homogeneous and facile arrangement that form well-ordered, close-packed arrays is important. In this study, formation of electrostatically assembled SiO2–SiO2 composite particles with excellent homogeneity in arrangement was first demonstrated using sol-gel-derived monodispersed SiO2 particles with average particles sizes of 200 nm and 16 µm. Formation of two- and three-dimensionally, close-packed arrays by electrophoresis-induced stimulation with direct-current and alternating-current electric fields was achieved for the first time using these electrostatically assembled SiO2–SiO2 composite particles. Detailed morphological observation by scanning electron microscopy revealed that the structure of the SiO2–SiO2 composite particles remained intact even after electrophoretic stimulation. The feasibility of obtaining well-ordered arrays of electrostatically assembled sol–gel-derived SiO2–SiO2 composite particles is important for further development of sol-gel-related technology in various applications, such as advanced composites and optical devices. Highlights: Electrostatically assembled SiO2–SiO2 composite particles were prepared using monodispersed sol–gel-derived SiO2 particles with two sizes. Ordered two- and three-dimensional SiO2–SiO2 composite-particle arrangements were obtained. Superimposition of AC and DC electric fields through electrophoresis-induced stimulation generated a two-dimensional close-packed structure. Abstract

Hexavalent chromium is very carcinogenic, and it is, therefore, important to remove it from wastewater prior to disposal. This study reports the photoreduction of Cr(VI) under simulated sunlight using graphene-derived TiO2 nanowire (TNW) composites. Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was carried out on rutile phase TNWs. The TNWs were fabricated by thermal oxidation of titanium foil in the presence of 1M potassium hydroxide mist at 750 °C. The TNWs uniformly covered the surface of the titanium foil. EPD of GO or rGO was done as a function of time to produce deposits of different thicknesses. The photocatalytic performances of the GO/TNWs or rGO/TNWs were tested to reduce Cr(VI) under visible light. The performance of rGO/TNWs in reducing Cr(VI) was better than GO/TNWs. A 10-second-deposited rGO on TNW samples can reduce 10 mg/L Cr(VI) within 30 min under visible light, likely as a result of the high electron transfer from rGO to TNWs accelerating the Cr(VI) reduction.
