Abstract

The upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), with its high luminosity, will offer an unprecedented opportunity to explore the internal structure of atomic nucleus over an extended energy range from $\sqrt{s_{ep}} =$ 45 GeV to $\sqrt{s_{ep}} =$ 140 GeV. A particularly promising aspect of this collider is the study of the partonic structure with quasi-real photons which can also be studied in inclusive ultra-peripheral collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Abstract

We will gain unprecedented, high-accuracy insights into the internal structure of the atomic nucleus thanks to lepton-hadron collision studies in the coming years at the Electron-Ion-Collider (EIC) in the United States. A good control of radiative corrections is necessary for the EIC to be fully exploited and to extract valuable information from various measurements. We present our extension of photoproduction at fixed order in MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, a widely used framework for (next-to-)leading order calculations at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). 4. A technique to study the elastic and inelastic interaction of quarkonium with hadrons using femtoscopic correlations

Abstract

We present a method for the measurement of parameters of elastic and inelastic interactions of charmonium with hadrons. In this technique, we use femtoscopic analysis of charmonium-hadron correlations at low relative momentum and the Lednicky-Lyuboshitz analytical model to extract the interaction parameters. We argue that such a study is already feasible in the LHCb experiment at the LHC, and we discuss the prospects for studies in the STAR at RHIC and other experiments at the LHC.

Abstract

Estimation of the freeze-out parameters as the function of rapidity in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=72$ GeV in the AFTER@LHC project is performed. The conventional hadron resonance gas model is used for the analysis of the events generated by the UrQMD model. The results indicate that one may obtain at least $2.5$ times increase of baryon chemical potential $\mu_B$ in the forward rapidity range as compared to the mid-rapidity. The $\mu_B$ values in the rapidity range of $0 < y < 4.5$ for AFTER@LHC are comparable to that covered by the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program. Thus, a rapidity scan in the AFTER@LHC project provides a complementary approach to study the QCD phase diagram., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The measurement of Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetries, $A_N$, for various quarkonium states and Drell-Yan lepton pairs can shed light on the orbital angular momentum of quarks and gluons, a fundamental ingredient of the proton-spin puzzle. The AFTER@LHC proposal combines a unique kinematic coverage and large luminosities thanks to the Large Hadron Collider beams to deliver precise measurements, complementary to the knowledge provided by collider experiments such as at RHIC. In this paper, we report on sensitivity studies for $J/\psi$, $\Upsilon$ and Drell-Yan $A_N$ done using the performance of LHCb-like or ALICE-like detectors, combined with polarised gaseous hydrogen and helium-3 targets. In particular, such analyses will provide us with new insights and knowledge about transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions for quarks and gluons and on twist-3 collinear matrix elements in the proton and the neutron., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

7. Estimate of cold nuclear matter effects on bottom production in d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV

Abstract

We investigate modification of the bottom quark production due to cold nuclear matter effects (CNM) at mid-rapidity in d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV at RHIC. Our results indicate that bottom production is not suppressed due to CNM effects in those collisions. We also found that shadowing and initial $k_T$ breadboarding for charm quarks explains at low $p_T$ ($p_T < 3$ GeV/c) the enhancement of heavy flavor decay electron yield in d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV compared to p+p.

8. Decomposition of flow and nonflow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract

We propose a method to separate \Delta\eta-dependent and \Delta\eta-independent azimuthal correlations using two- and four-particle cumulants between pseudo-rapidity (\eta) bins in symmetric heavy-ion collisions. The \Delta\eta-independent correlation may be dominated by harmonic flows, a global correlation to the common collision geometry. The \Delta\eta-dependent correlation can be identified as nonflow, particle correlations unrelated to the common geometry. Our method exploits the \eta symmetry of the average harmonic flows and is "data-driven." We use the AMPT and HIJING event generators to illustrate our method. We discuss the decomposed \Delta\eta-independent and \Delta\eta-dependent correlations regarding flow and nonflow in the models., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Collisions of deformed uranium nuclei provide a unique opportunity to study the spatial dependence of charmonium in-medium effects. By selecting the orientations of the colliding nuclei, different path lengths through the nuclear medium could be selected within the same experimental environment. In addition, higher energy densities can be achieved in U+U collisions relative to Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we investigate the prospects for charmonium studies with U+U collisions. We discuss the effects of shadowing and nuclear absorption on the J/\psi\ yield. Presently flow and nonflow cannot be separated experimentally. Using Pythia simulations of p+p collisions we show that nonflow approximately factorizes. Abstract

J/psi production is considered to be a sensitive probe of the properties of quark gluon plasma created in nucleus+nucleus collisions at RHIC. In this article, the recent analysis of mid-rapidity (|y| < 1) J/psi production via the dielectron decay channel in Au+Au (year 2007) and Cu+Cu (year 2005) collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 200 GeV at STAR is reported. It is compared to STAR p+p results in order to study the nuclear modification factor as a function of transverse momentum and centrality. 12. The new computer program for three dimensional relativistic hydrodynamical model

Abstract

An effective computer program for three dimensional relativistic hydrodynamical model has been developed. It implements a new approach to the early hot phase of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The computer program simulates time-space evolution of nuclear matter in terms of ideal-fluid dynamics. Equations of motions of hydrodynamics are solved making use of finite difference methods. Commonly-used algorithms of numerical relativistic hydrodynamics RHLLE and MUSTA-FORCE have been applied in simulations. To speed-up calculations, parallel processing has been made available for solving hydrodynamical equations. The test results of simulations for 3D, 2D and Bjorken expansion are reported in this paper. As a next step we plan to implement the hadronization algorithm by implementing the continuous particle emission for freeze-out and comparing it with Cooper-Frye formula., Comment: Quark Matter 2005 Poster Session Proceeding

Abstract

Understanding gluon density distributions and how they are modified in nuclei are among the most important goals in nuclear physics. In recent years, diffractive vector meson production measured in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) at heavy-ion colliders has provided a new tool for probing the gluon density. In this Letter, we report the first measurement of $J/\psi$ photoproduction off the deuteron in UPCs at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200~\rm GeV$ in d$+$Au collisions. The differential cross section as a function of momentum transfer $-t$ is measured. In addition, data with a neutron tagged in the deuteron-going Zero-Degree Calorimeter is investigated for the first time, which is found to be consistent with the expectation of incoherent diffractive scattering at low momentum transfer. Theoretical predictions based on the Color Glass Condensate saturation model and the gluon shadowing model are compared with the data quantitatively. A better agreement with the saturation model has been observed. With the current measurement, the results are found to be directly sensitive to the gluon density distribution of the deuteron and the deuteron breakup, which provides insights into the nuclear gluonic structure., Comment: Final published version Phys. Abstract

Methods for the non-destructive assay of nuclear waste drums are of great importance to the nuclear waste management community, especially where loss in continuity of knowledge about the content of drums happened or chemical processes altering the contents of the drums may occur. Muon scattering tomography has been shown to be a promising technique for the non-destructive assay of nuclear waste drums in a safe way. By measuring tracks of muons entering and leaving the probed sample and extracting scattering angles from the tracks, it is possible to draw conclusions about the contents of the sample and its spatial arrangement. Within the CHANCE project, a newly built large-scale mobile detector system for scanning and imaging the contents of nuclear waste drums using atmospheric muons is currently undergoing commissioning.

Abstract

A fixed-target programme in the ALICE experiment using the LHC proton and lead beams offers many physics opportunities related to the parton content of the nucleon and nucleus at high-$x$, the nucleon spin and the Quark-Gluon Plasma. We investigate two solutions that would allow ALICE to run in a fixed-target mode: the internal solid target coupled to a bent crystal and the internal gas target. The feasibility of these solutions are being studied for a possible installation at the LHC interaction point IP2 during the Long Shutdown 3.

Abstract

We present the first measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry $A_{LL}$ for dijets with at least one jet reconstructed within the pseudorapidity range $0.8 < \eta < 1.8$. The dijets were measured in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV. Values for $A_{LL}$ are determined for several distinct event topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and span a range of parton momentum fraction $x$ down to $x \sim$ 0.01. The measured asymmetries are found to be consistent with the predictions of global analyses that incorporate the results of previous RHIC measurements. They will provide new constraints on $\Delta g(x)$ in this poorly constrained region when included in future global analyses.
