The paper is dedicated to the blessed memory of Professor Vladislav Gavrilovich Bagrov, an outstanding Russian scientist in the area of theoretical and mathematical physics. He had a great influence on the formation of the scientific interests dozens of scientists in Tomsk and Russia as a whole. Two of the authors of this paper (I.L.B and V.A.K) are to one degree or another grateful to Professor V.G. Bagrov for comprehensive support in the initial period of their scientific career. Two other authors (S.A.F. and A.P.I.) are familiar with and use the work of scientists from the Tomsk School of Theoretical Physics, founded by Professor V.G. Bagrov. The paper is devoted to certain aspects of the higher-spin field theory, which were mainly initiated and continued during of I.L.B and V.A.K work in Tomsk. We generalize the first class constraints that describe the infinite spin irreducible $4D$ Poincar\'{e} group representation in flat space to new first class constraints in $AdS_4$ space. The constraints are realized as operators acting in Fock space spanned by the creation and annihilation operators with two-component spinor indices. As a result, we obtain a new closed gauge algebra on $AdS_4$ with the known flat space limit. We present a new particle model that generalize for constant curvature space an infinite spin particle in flat space. The model is described by commuting Weyl spinor additional coordinates. It proved that such a model is consistent only in external gravitational field corresponding to the constant curvature spaces. We construct a Lagrangian that describes the dynamics of a six-dimensional free infinite (continuous) spin field in $6D$ Minkowski space. The Lagrangian is formulated in the framework of the BRST approach to higher spin field theory and is based on a system of constraints defining an irreducible representation of the corresponding Poincar\'e group. The field realization of generators in the $6D$ Poincar\'e algebra and the second-, fourth-, and sixth-order Casimir operators are obtained in explicit form using additional spinor coordinates. Specific aspects of such a realization in six dimensions are discussed. We derive the conditions that determine the irreducible representation $6D$ infinite spin field and reformulate them as operators in the Fock space forming a first-class algebra in terms of commutators. These operators are used to construct the BRST charge and the corresponding Lagrangian. We prove that the conditions of the irreducible representation are reproduced as the consequence of the Lagrangian equations of motion, which finally provides the correctness of the results obtained.

We develop an approach to constructing the manifestly Lorentz covariant cubic interaction vertices for the four-dimensional massless higher spin bosonic fields with two-component dotted and undotted spinor indices. Such fields automatically satisfy the traceless conditions what simplify form of the equations determining the irreducible massless representation of the Poincar'e group with given helicity. The cubic vertex is formulated in the framework of the BRST approach to higher spin field theory. Use of the above spin-tensor fields allows to simplify a form of the BRST-charge and hence to find the cubic vertices just in terms of irreducible higher spin fields. We derive an equation for the cubic vertex and find solutions for arbitrary spins $s_1,s_2,s_3$ with the number of derivatives $s_1+s_2+s_3$ in the vertex. We develop a complete off-shell Lagrangian description of the free $4D, {\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theory of infinite spin. Bosonic and fermionic fields are formulated in terms of spin-tensor fields with dotted and undotted indices. The corresponding Lagrangians for bosonic and fermionic infinite spin fields entering into the on-shell supersymmetric model are derived within the BRST method. Lagrangian for this supersymmetric model is written in terms of the complex infinite spin bosonic field and infinite spin fermionic Weyl field subject to supersymmetry transformations. The fields involved into the on-shell supersymmetric Lagrangian can be considered as components of six infinite spin chiral and antichiral multiplets. These multiplets are extended to the corresponding infinite spin chiral and antichiral superfields so that two chiral and antichiral superfields contain among the components the basic fields of an infinite spin supermultiplet and extra four chiral and antichiral superfields containing only the auxiliary fields needed for the Lagrangian formulation. The superfield Lagrangian is constructed in terms of these six chiral and antichiral supefields, and we show that the component form of this superfield Lagrangian exactly coincides with the previously found component supersymmetric Lagrangian after eliminating the component fields added to construct (anti)chiral superfields., Comment: v2: minor corrections

Using the BRST approach to higher spin field theories we develop a generic technique for constructing the cubic interaction vertices for N=1 supersymmetric massless higher spin fields on four, six and ten dimensional flat backgrounds. Such an approach allows formulation of the equations for cubic vertices including bosonic and fermionic higher spin fields, and the problem of finding the vertices is reduced to finding the consistent solutions to these equations. As a realization of this procedure, we present the particular solutions for the vertices where the fields obey some off-shell constraints. It is shown that the supersymmetry imposes additional constraints on the vertices and singles out a particular subclass of the solutions. As a concrete application of the generic scheme, we consider supersymmetric Yang-Mills-like systems in four, six and ten dimensions where the higher spin fields transform under some internal symmetry group, as well as supergravity-like systems in the same dimensions., Comment: 31 pages, LaTeX

We study a possibility of Lagrangian formulation for free higher spin bosonic totally symmetric tensor field on the background manifold characterizing by the arbitrary metric, vector and third rank tensor fields in framework of BRST approach. Assuming existence of massless and flat limits in the Lagrangian and using the most general form of the operators of constraints we show that the algebra generated by these operators will be closed only for constant curvature space with no nontrivial coupling to the third rank tensor and the strength of the vector fields. We explore a new possibility of BRST construction in higher spin field theory to obtain a consistent Lagrangian for massive spin-2 field in Einstein space. Such approach automatically leads to gauge invariant Lagrangian with suitable auxiliary and Stuckelberg fields. It is proved that in this case a propagation of spin-2 field is hyperbolic and causal. We apply the BRST approach, developed for higher spin field theories, to Lagrangian construction for totally antisymmetric massive fermionic fields in AdS_d space. As well as generic higher spin massive theories, the obtained Lagrangian theory is a reducible gauge model containing, besides the basic field, a number of auxiliary (Stuckelberg) fields and the order of reducibility grows with the value of the rank of the antisymmetric field. However, unlike the generic higher spin theory, for the special case under consideration we show that one can get rid of all the auxiliary fields and the final Lagrangian for fermionic antisymmetric field is formulated only in terms of basic field., Comment: 22 pages; v2: 1 footnote and 2 references added

We apply the BRST approach, previously developed for higher spin field theories, to gauge invariant Lagrangian construction for antisymmetric massive and massless bosonic fields in arbitrary d-dimensional curved space. The obtained theories are reducible gauge models both in massless and massive cases and the order of reducibility grows with the value of the rank of the antisymmetric field. In both the cases the Lagrangians contain the sets of auxiliary fields and possess more rich gauge symmetry in comparison with standard Lagrangian formulation for the antisymmetric fields. We review the recently developed general gauge invariant approach to Lagrangian construction for massive higher spin fields in Minkowski and AdS spaces of arbitrary dimension. We develop a general gauge invariant Lagrangian construction for half-integer higher spin fields in the AdS space of any dimension. Starting with formulation in terms of auxiliary Fock space we derive the closed nonlinear symmetry algebras of higher spin fermionic fields in the AdS space and find the corresponding BRST operator. A universal procedure of constructing the gauge invariant Lagrangians describing the dynamics of fermionic fields of any spin is developed. No off-shell constraints for the fields and gauge parameters are imposed from the very beginning. It is shown that all the constraints determining the irreducible representation of the AdS group arise as a consequence of the equations of motion and gauge transformations. We construct simple unconstrained Lagrangian formulations for massless higher spin fields in flat space of arbitrary dimension and on anti de Sitter background. Starting from the triplet equations of Francia and Sagnotti, which describe a chain of spin modes, we introduce an auxiliary field and find appropriate gauge invariant constraints that single out the spin-s mode. The resulting quartet of fields, thus describing an irreducible representation of the Poincare group, is used to construct simple Lagrangian formulations, which are local, free from higher derivative terms and use equal number of auxiliary fields for an unconstrained description of any value of spin. Our method proves to be most efficient for an unconstrained description of massless higher spin fermions in anti de Sitter space. We formulate a general gauge invariant Lagrangian construction describing the dynamics of massive higher spin fermionic fields in arbitrary dimensions. We develop the BRST approach to Lagrangian formulation for all massless half-integer higher spin fields on an arbitrary dimensional flat space. General procedure of Lagrangian construction describing the dynamics of fermionic field with any spin is given. It is shown that in fermionic case the higher spin field model is a reducible gauge theory and the order of reducibility grows with the value of spin. We study the renormalization of dimension four composite operators and the energy-momentum tensor in noncommutative complex scalar field theory. The proper operator basis is defined and it is proved that the bare composite operators are expressed via renormalized ones with the help of an appropriate mixing matrix which is calculated in the one-loop approximation. The number and form of the operators in the basis and the structure of the mixing matrix essentially differ from those in the corresponding commutative theory and in noncommutative real scalar field theory. We show that the energy-momentum tensor in the noncommutative complex scalar field theory is defined up to six arbitrary constants. The canonically defined energy-momentum tensor is not finite and must be replaced by the "improved" one, in order to provide finiteness. Suitable "improving" terms are found. Renormalization of dimension four composite operators at zero momentum transfer is also studied. It is shown that the mixing matrices are different for the cases of arbitrary and zero momentum transfer. The energy-momentum vector, unlike the energy-momentum tensor, is defined unambigously and does not require "improving", in order to be conserved and finite, at least in the one-loop approximation., Comment: 23 pages, pictures using axodraw, references are added

We consider the one-loop renormalization of dimension four composite operators and the energy-momentum tensor in noncommutative \phi^4 scalar field theory. We study the theory of noncommutative U(N) Yang-Mills field interacting with scalar and spinor fields in the fundamental and the adjoint representations. We include in the action both the terms describing interaction between the gauge and the matter fields and the terms which describe interaction among the matter fields only. Some of these interaction terms have not been considered previously in the context of noncommutative field theory. We find all counterterms for the theory to be finite in the one-loop approximation. It is shown that these counterterms allow to absorb all the divergencies by renormalization of the fields and the coupling constants, so the theory turns out to be multiplicatively renormalizable. In case of 1PI gauge field functions the result may easily be generalized on an arbitrary number of the matter fields. To generalize the results for the other 1PI functions it is necessary for the matter coupling constants to be adapted in the proper way. We investigate the problems of consistency and causality for the equations of motion describing massive spin two field in external gravitational and massless scalar dilaton fields in arbitrary spacetime dimension. From the field theoretical point of view we consider a general classical action with non-minimal couplings and find gravitational and dilaton background on which this action describes a theory consistent with the flat space limit. In the case of pure gravitational background all field components propagate causally. We show also that the massive spin two field can be consistently described in arbitrary background by means of the lagrangian representing an infinite series in the inverse mass. Within string theory we obtain equations of motion for the massive spin two field coupled to gravity from the requirement of quantum Weyl invariance of the corresponding two dimensional sigma-model. We investigate the problem of derivation of consistent equations of motion for the massive spin 2 field interacting with gravity within both field theory and string theory. In field theory we derive the most general classical action with non-minimal couplings in arbitrary spacetime dimension, find the most general gravitational background on which this action describes a consistent theory and generalize the analysis for the coupling with background scalar dilaton field. We show also that massive spin 2 field allows in principle consistent description in arbitrary background if one builds its action in the form of an infinite series in the inverse mass square. Using sigma-model description of string theory in background fields we obtain in the lowest order in $\alpha'$ the explicit form of effective equations of motion for the massive spin 2 field interacting with gravity from the requirement of quantum Weyl invariance and demonstrate that they coincide with the general form of consistent equations derived in field theory., Comment: 12 pages, Latex file, discussion of coupling with dilaton added
