Abstract The paper presents the results of the analysis of the geo-chemo-mechanical data gathered through an innovative multidisciplinary investigation campaign in the Mar Piccolo basin, a heavily polluted marine bay aside the town of Taranto (Southern Italy). The basin is part of an area declared at high environmental risk by the Italian government. The cutting-edge approach to the environmental characterization of the site was promoted by the Special Commissioner for urgent measures of reclamation, environmental improvements and redevelopment of Taranto and involved experts from several research fields, who cooperated to gather a new insight into the origin, distribution, mobility and fate of the contaminants within the basin. The investigation campaign was designed to implement advanced research methodologies and testing strategies. Differently from traditional investigation campaigns, aimed solely at the assessment of the contamination state within sediments lying in the top layers, the new campaign provided an interpretation of the geo-chemo-mechanical properties and state of the sediments forming the deposit at the seafloor. The integrated, multidisciplinary and holistic approach, that considered geotechnical engineering, electrical and electronical engineering, geological, sedimentological, mineralogical, hydraulic engineering, hydrological, chemical, geochemical, biological fields, supported a comprehensive understanding of the influence of the contamination on the hydro-mechanical properties of the sediments, which need to be accounted for in the selection and design of the risk mitigation measures. The findings of the research represent the input ingredients of the conceptual model of the site, premise to model the evolutionary contamination scenarios within the basin, of guidance for the environmental risk management. The study testifies the importance of the cooperative approach among researchers of different fields to fulfil the interpretation of complex polluted eco-systems.

Abstract Electrochemical reduction of CO2 is an effective method for storing intermittent renewable energy. This could result in fuel additives and chemical feedstocks such as alcohols. A challenge of electrochemical alcohol production is the transfer of electrons and protons, as well as the formation of C–C bonds. As of now, copper-based materials are the most commonly used and effective catalysts. Although CuO x is considered a promising catalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR), significant improvements in product selectivity are still needed. This paper presents some results obtained using copper oxide as a cathode, combined with 33% of ionomer, nickel iron as anode, and membrane Fumatech as electrolyte. As a result of physico-chemical experiments, morphological measurements of the cathode, electrochemical experiments carried out with a complete zero-gap cell operating under alkaline conditions, and gas-chromatographic (GC) analyses of the cathode outlet stream, we determined that methyl formate, ethanol, and propanol were mainly obtained at a rate of 116.3 μmol $${\text{g}}_{\text{cat}}^{-1} \, {\text{h}}^{-{1}}$$ g cat - 1 h - 1 during operation at 2.2 V.

The search for alternative ways to give a second life to materials paved the way for detailed investigation into three silica-polyethylenimine (Si-PEI) materials for the purpose of CO 2 adsorption in carbon capture and storage. A solvent extraction procedure was investigated to recover degraded PEIs and silica, and concomitantly, pyrolysis was evaluated to obtain valuable chemicals such as alkylated pyrazines. An array of thermal (TGA, Py-GC-MS), mechanical (rheology), and spectroscopical (ATR-FTIR, 1 H- 13 C-NMR) methods were applied to PEIs extracted with methanol to determine the relevant physico-chemical features of these polymers when subjected to degradation after use in CO 2 capture. Proxies of degradation associated with the plausible formation of urea/carbamate moieties were revealed by Py-GC-MS, NMR, and ATR-FTIR. The yield of alkylpyrazines estimated by Py-GC-MS highlighted the potential of exhausted PEIs as possibly valuable materials in other applications.

Cooking effect (grilling - barbecue, oven-cooking, frying, boiling and microwaving) on lipid and fatty acids (FAs) in mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and fish Trachurus trachurus was investigated. The levels of priority PAHs were also evaluated as well as the potential risk associated with their consumption. Cooking increased lipid content, reaching the highest value in fried product with 13.2 and 5.6 g/100 g in mussel and fish, respectively. The n-3/n-6 ranged from 0.15 to 5.31 in mussel and from 0.29 to 5.35 in mackerel. In both species, frying and oven-cooking negatively affected FAs composition as shown by the lipid quality indices. However, FAs profile exhibited by species after cooking remained beneficial for human health. Concerning PAHs, levels ranged from 31 to 78 μg/kg in M. galloprovincialis, and from 8.4 to 25 μg/kg in T. trachurus. The minimum and maximum values were found, respectively, in the raw product and after barbecue cooking with charcoal placed at 4 cm away from the seafood. The carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene was detected only in mussels after barbecue cooking. Coastal habitats provide important ecosystem services, such as the maintenance of ecological sustainability, water quality regulation, nutrient recycling, and sandy beaches which are important areas for recreation and tourism. The quality of seawater is generally measured by determining the concentrations of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci, which might be affected by the persistent populations of these bacteria in sand. Sand might thus be a significant source of pathogen exposure to beachgoers. The quality of coastal recreational waters can also be affected by eutrophication, water discoloration, and harmful algal blooms, which pose additional human health risks. Here, we conducted a monitoring of the beaches quality along the Taranto Gulf by determining the concentrations of fecal indicator organisms, as well as other parameters that are not traditionally measured (physicochemical parameters, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and harmful microalgae), in shallow seawater and sand sampled from three beaches. The concentrations of bacteria were determined using both standard microbiological methods and the IDEXX system. Our results demonstrate the utility of measuring a greater number of parameters in addition to those conventionally measured, as well as the importance of assessing the health risks posed by the sand matrix. Additional work is needed to develop rapid analytical techniques that could be used to monitor the microbiological parameters of solid matrices., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

4-Fluoro-threonine, the only fluoro amino acid of natural origin discovered so far, is an interesting target for both synthetic and theoretical investigations. In this work, we lay the foundation for spectroscopic characterization of 4-fluoro-threonine. First, we report a diastereoselective synthetic route, which is suitable to produce synthetic material for experimental characterization. The addition of the commercially available ethyl isocyanoacetate to benzyloxyacetaldehyde led to the corresponding benzyloxy-oxazoline, which was hydrolyzed and transformed into ethyl (4 S *,5 S *)-5-hydroxymethyl-2-oxo-4-oxazolidinecarboxylate in a few steps. Fluorination with diethylamino sulfur trifluoride (DAST) afforded ethyl (4 S *,5 S *)-5-fluoromethyl-2-oxo-4-oxazolidinecarboxylate, which was deprotected to give the desired diastereomerically pure 4-fluoro-threonine, in 8-10% overall yield. With the synthetic material in our hands, acid-base titrations have been carried out to determine acid dissociation constants and the isoelectric point, which is the testing ground for the theoretical analysis. We have used machine learning coupled with quantum chemistry at the state-of-the-art to analyze the conformational space of 4-fluoro-threonine, with the aim of gaining insights from the comparison of computational and experimental results. Indeed, we have demonstrated that our approach, which couples a last-generation double-hybrid density functional including empirical dispersion contributions with a model combining explicit first-shell molecules and a polarizable continuum for describing solvent effects, provides results and trends in remarkable agreement with experiments. The most stable isomer of the 1:1 complex formed by 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone and water has been characterized by combining rotational spectroscopy in supersonic expansion and state-of-the-art quantum-chemical computations. In the observed isomer, water plays the double role of proton donor and acceptor, thus forming a seven-membered ring with 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone. Accurate intermolecular parameters featuring one classical O-H···O hydrogen bond and one weak C-H···O hydrogen bond have been determined by means of a semi-experimental approach for equilibrium structure. Furthermore, insights on the nature of the established non-covalent interactions have been unveiled by means of different bond analyses. The comparison with the analogous complex formed by acetophenone with water points out the remarkable role played by fluorine atoms in tuning non-covalent interactions.

The extent and severity of the abnormalities vary among affected individuals., Main Body: The aim of this work is to provide recommendations for the diagnosis and management of people affected by Poland syndrome based on evidence from literature and experience of health professionals from different medical backgrounds who have followed for several years affected subjects. The literature search was performed in the second half of 2019. Original papers, meta-analyses, reviews, books and guidelines were reviewed and final recommendations were reached by consensus., Conclusion: Being Poland syndrome a rare syndrome most recommendations here presented are good clinical practice based on the consensus of the participant experts.

COVID-19 outbreak has put the whole world in an unprecedented difficult situation bringing life around the world to a frightening halt and claiming thousands of lives. Due to COVID-19's spread in 212 countries and territories and increasing numbers of infected cases and death tolls mounting to 5,212,172 and 334,915 (as of May 22 2020), it remains a real threat to the public health system. This paper renders a response to combat the virus through Artificial Intelligence (AI). Some Deep Learning (DL) methods have been illustrated to reach this goal, including Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and Long/Short Term Memory (LSTM). It delineates an integrated bioinformatics approach in which different aspects of information from a continuum of structured and unstructured data sources are put together to form the user-friendly platforms for physicians and researchers. The main advantage of these AI-based platforms is to accelerate the process of diagnosis and treatment of the COVID-19 disease. The most recent related publications and medical reports were investigated with the purpose of choosing inputs and targets of the network that could facilitate reaching a reliable Artificial Neural Network-based tool for challenges associated with COVID-19. The conformational isomerism of isopropylamine and n-propylamine has been investigated by means of an integrated strategy combining high-level quantum-chemical calculations and high-resolution rotational spectroscopy. The equilibrium structures (and thus equilibrium rotational constants) as well as relative energies of all conformers have been computed using the so-called "cheap" composite scheme, which combines the coupled-cluster methodology with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory for extrapolation to the complete basis set. Methods rooted in the density functional theory have been instead employed for computing spectroscopic parameters and for accounting for vibrational effects. Guided by quantum-chemical predictions, the rotational spectra of isopropylamine and n-propylamine have been investigated between 2 and 400 GHz with Fourier transform microwave and frequency-modulation millimeter/submillimeter spectrometers. Spectral assignments confirmed the presence of several conformers with comparable stability and pointed out possible Coriolis resonance effects between some of them.

The rotational spectrum of the 1:1 complex formic acid-isopropylformate (FA-IPF) has been first observed when trying to assign the pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave (FTMW) spectrum of the adduct formic acid-2-propanol, by expanding a binary mixture of HCOOH and 2-propanol in He. The strong FTMW spectrum of isopropylformate, formed by the esterification reaction, was observed instead. However, when HCOOH was in excess in the binary mixture, it was possible to observe and assign the rotational spectrum of FA-IPF. Later on a much intense spectrum of FA-IPF was obtained, when combining FA with IPF. Finally, the spectra of five isotopologues of the most stable isomer of formic acid-isopropylformate have been observed by means of rotational spectroscopy in supersonic expansion. Some of them, HCOOH-(CH 3 ) 2 CHOOCD and HCOOH-(CH 3 ) 2 CDOOCH have been synthesized in the MW cavity by using DCOOH or (CH 3 ) 2 CDOH as precursors in the esterification process. In the observed isomer of the complex, the two subunits are linked to each other by a standard O-H···O and a weak C-H···O hydrogen bond. The dissociation energy has been estimated to be 34.1 kJ·mol -1 .

Context: C-cyanomethanimine (HNCHCN), existing in the two Z and E isomeric forms, is a key prebiotic molecule, but, so far, only the E isomer has been detected toward the massive star-forming region. Sagittarius B2(N) using transitions in the radio wavelength domain., Aims: With the aim of detecting HNCHCN in Sun-like-star forming regions, the laboratory investigation of its rotational spectrum has been extended to the millimeter-/submillimeter-wave (mm-/submm-) spectral window in which several unbiased spectral surveys have been already carried out., Methods: High-resolution laboratory measurements of the rotational spectrum of C-cyanomethanimine were carried out in the 100-420 GHz range using a frequency-modulation absorption spectrometer. We then searched for the C-cyanomethanimine spectral features in the mm-wave range using the high-sensitivity and unbiased spectral surveys obtained with the IRAM 30-m antenna in the ASAI context, the earliest stages of star formation from starless to evolved Class I objects being sampled., Results: For both the Z and E isomers, the spectroscopic work has led to an improved and extended knowledge of the spectroscopic parameters, thus providing accurate predictions of the rotational signatures up to ~700 GHz. So far, no C-cyanomethanimine emission has been detected toward the ASAI targets, and upper limits of the column density of ~ 10 11 -10 12 cm -2 could only be derived. Consequently, the C-cyanomethanimine abundances have to be less than a few 10 -10 for starless and hot-corinos. A less stringent constraint, ≤ 10 -9 , is obtained for shocks sites., Conclusions: The combination of the upper limits of the abundances of C-cyanomethanimine together with accurate laboratory frequencies up to ~ 700 GHz poses the basis for future higher sensitivity searches around Sun-like-star forming regions. For compact (typically less than 1″) and chemically enriched sources such as hot-corinos, the use of interferometers as NOEMA and ALMA in their extended configurations are clearly needed.

Introduction: Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) are a cause of high morbidity, disability and reduced quality of life, as well as mortality and rising costs for health systems. Preventing the HAI risk by planning and implementing effective preventive strategies is important to safeguard patient health., Methods: The study aimed to evaluate the presence of procedures and protocols for infection control, to assess the adhesion to the different aspects of hand hygiene (HH) and hand washing technique by healthcare workers in six ICUs. A perspective observational study was conducted in six ICUs. In each ICU, the adherence by health care workers to both hand hygiene practices and standard precautions was assessed, as well as the presence of procedures and written protocols., Results: The findings showed that in all the involved ICUs, 73 of 142 required protocols and procedures were available. Specifically, 59 of 79 were available for general measure of risk control, 12 of 15 for hand hygiene, and 24 of 48 for standard precautions and isolation measures. Also, the results showed highly variable levels of adherence to the best hygiene practices in all the ICUs involved in the study, with compliance rates ranging from 3% to 100%, and 73 of 142 required protocols were available at the study time., Conclusions: Overall, the involved ICUs showed low levels of adherence to best hygiene practices. This suggests the need to implement immediate strategies for infection control in the ICUs. A multidisciplinary intervention could be effective in preventing and control the HAI risk.score was reached only by the third year students with regard to the proper HH. The level of knowledge about HAI was inadequate.A periodically check of nursing students' knowledge would be advisable in order to fill any gaps, improve training, reduce HAI and increase prevention measures compliance.

The 1:1 complex of tert-butyl alcohol with difluoromethane has been characterized by means of a joint experimental-computational investigation. Its rotational spectrum has been recorded by using a pulsed-jet Fourier-Transform microwave spectrometer. The experimental work has been guided and supported by accurate quantum-chemical calculations. In particular, the computed potential energy landscape pointed out the formation of three stable isomers. However, the very low interconversion barriers explain why only one isomer, showing one O-H···F and two C-H···O weak hydrogen bonds, has been experimentally characterized. The effect of the H → tert -butyl- group substitution has been analyzed from the comparison to the difluoromethane-water adduct.

The rotational spectra of four isotopologues of the 1:1 complex between formic acid and pyridine show that the two units are linked together through a "classical" (OH···N) and a weak (CH···O) hydrogen bond. The molecular system appears quite rigid and no effects of the internal motions have been observed in the spectrum. The dissociation energy obtained from the centrifugal distortion by applying an approximate model, 39.8 kJ/mol, is quite similar to the ab initio value, 41.7 kJ/mol. Its relatively high value suggests a small charge transfer to take place.

The rotational spectra of the parent species and of four water isotopologues (-DOH, -HOD, -DOD, and -H(18)OH) of the adduct 3-fluoropyridine-water have been investigated using pulsed supersonic-jet Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy. From the rotational constants, the structure of the adduct was deduced where the water is linked to the aromatic ring through an intermolecular O-H···N hydrogen bond with a bond distance of 1.9961(5) Å and an O-H···N angle of 156.8(1)°. The shape of the complex is such that the water oxygen is in the plane of the aromatic ring, on the opposite side of fluorine, and forming a C-H···N weak hydrogen bond with the adjacent aromatic hydrogen.

The rotational spectra of two isotopologues of chlorotrifluoroethylene-dimethyl ether show that the two constituent molecules are held together by a lone pair···π interaction. The ether oxygen is linked to the (CF2) carbon atom, with a C-O distance of 2.908 Å.

The rotational spectra of four conformers (At, Ag, Et, Eg) of the tertiary alcohol 1-methylcyclohexanol were assigned by pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The transitions of two gauche conformers were split in two separated component lines, but it was not possible-from the available measured transitions-to accurately determine their vibrational ΔE0+0- ground-state splittings, respectively. In addition, the rotational spectra of the four OD deuterated isotopologues were measured and assigned. For the gauche species of this isotopologue we were able to determine the tunneling splittings, ΔE0+0-(Ag, OD) = 15.581(5) GHz and ΔE0+0-(Eg, OD) = 18.17(3) GHz, respectively. From these splittings the inversion barriers for Ag and Eg were determined, by using a flexible model, to be B2(Ag) = 356(10) and B2(Eg) = 320(10) cm(-1), respectively.

Formic acid and dimethyl ether are combined in a supersonic expansion to form a molecular adduct with the two subunits held together by a "classical" OH···O hydrogen bond and a bifurcated weak CH2···O hydrogen bond. The rotational spectra of the parent and of two (13)C isotopologues in natural abundance show that the complex has Cs symmetry, with the heavy atom symmetry planes of HCOOH and (CH3)2O perpendicular to each other.

Background: Nursing students can be exposed to patients with hepatitis A virus (HAV) and can represent a vehicle of transmission both for health personnel, patients and relatives., Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the risk of HAV infection in nursing students during their internship., Patients and Methods: A seroprevalence survey on HAV infection was performed on nursing students at the Cagliari university-hospital, together with the assessment of the compliance to preventive measures to decrease the risk of infection during their internship. Blood specimens were obtained from 253 students. All serum samples were tested for anti-HAV antibodies (IgG) by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Compliance to preventive measures was recorded by trained personnel., Results: Overall HAV seropositivity in nursing students (mean age 24, range 17 - 45 years) was 3%. Compliance to preventive measures was not uniform (6% - 76%) and extremely low in some specific measures targeted to decrease the oral-fecal transmission., Conclusions: The high proportion of susceptible nursing students can contribute to an increase in the risk of nosocomial transmission, especially when specific preventive measures are not completely applied. Nursing education packages, before starting medical internship, should be implemented in order to increase their compliance to preventive measures, especially in wards at higher risk. Vaccination should be considered in wards at higher risk.

The rotational spectra of five isotopologues of the 1:1 complex trifluoroanisole-water have been investigated with pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The triple fluorination of the methyl group greatly affects the features of the rotational spectrum of the complex with water, with respect to those of the related complex anisole-water. The shape, the internal dynamics, and the isotopic effects turned out to be quite different from those of the anisole-water adduct ( Giuliano , B. M. ; Caminati , W. Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. 2005 , 44 , 603 - 606 ). However, as in anisole-water, water has the double role as a proton donor and proton acceptor, and it is linked to trifluoroanisole through two, O-H···O and C-H···O hydrogen bonds.

Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (Me-Hg) concentrations were determined in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from 10 stations located in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Taranto Gulf) an important semi-enclosed basin in Italy, devoted to mussel culture activities. The obtained results show that THg and Me-Hg concentrations ranged from 0.236 to 0.559 μg g(-1) d.w. and from 0.066 to 0.155 μg g(-1) d.w., respectively. Consequently, the Me-Hg/THg ratios ranged from 17% to 49%. The dietary intake of THg and Me-Hg were studied among children and adults from Taranto (Southern Italy). The estimated weekly intake for THg and Me-Hg was below the Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) established by European Food Safety Autority (EFSA) for all sampled mussels, though their consumption provides a THg intake in children near the PTWI., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
