Lignin can affect the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of lignocellulose. In this study, the lignin isolated from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) pretreated with p-toluenesulfonic acid (PL) was firstly aminated, and then the effects of PL and aminated PL (APL) on the bagasse enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency (EHE) were investigated. The results showed that the addition of PL and APL promoted the EHE, and EHE with APL (73.82 %) was higher than PL (51.39 %). To explore the reason, the data were further analyzed including cellulase adsorption capacity, enzyme activity, cellulase-lignin interaction, and molecular docking. It was found that APL adsorbed more cellulase (27.83 mg protein/g lignin) than PL (4.96 mg protein/g lignin), resulting from the greater interaction force and lower binding free energy between APL and cellulase. The addition of APL more remarkably enhanced the cellobiohydrolase and endoglucanase activities than PL due to more effectively inducing cellulase conformation optimization. Background: White rot fungi produce various reactive oxygen species and ligninolytic enzymes for lignocellulose deconstruction. However, their interactions during the deconstruction of lignocellulosic structural barriers for efficient enzymatic saccharification remain unclear. Results: Herein, the extracellular enzyme activities and secretomic analysis revealed the sequential expression of hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) and manganese peroxidases (MnPs) for lignocellulose deconstruction by the white rot fungus Irpex lacteus. Subsequently, in vitro functional studies found that ⋅OH possessed the ability to disrupt the smooth surface structure of corn stover, resulting in increased enzymatic saccharification and cellulose accessibility. Purified recombinant MnPs from I. lacteus were able to cleave the β-O-4 bond in phenolic and non-phenolic lignin model dimers without the help of any mediators. Furthermore, the sequential pretreatment of corn stover with ⋅OH and MnP exhibited significant synergistic effects, increasing enzymatic saccharification and cellulose accessibility by 2.9-fold and 1.8-fold, respectively. Conclusions: These results proved for the first time the synergistic effects of ⋅OH and MnP pretreatment in improving the enzymatic saccharification and cellulose accessibility of corn stover. The majority of carbon materials on the market are produced from polyacrylonitrile precursor fibers using high‐temperature oven processes. Despite approaches for green carbon fiber precursors, current stabilization and carbonization processes require large amounts of energy and render carbon materials costly and environmentally not sustainable. Here, a plasma carbonization treatment is employed for papers made from lignin/polyvinylpyrrolidone precursor fibers. The process provides carbonization within a timeframe of a few seconds, while the degrees of porosity, conductivity, and hydrophobicity can be tuned. It is shown that the properties of these carbonized papers are suitable for application as supercapacitor electrodes with capacitances in the range of 40 mF g−1 with very good cycling stability dropping by less than 20% over 4000 cycles. The valorization and dissolution of lignin using ionic liquids (ILs) is critical for developing sustainable biorefineries and a circular bioeconomy. This review aims to critically assess the current state of computational and machine learning methods for understanding and optimizing IL-based lignin dissolution and valorization processes reported since 2022. The paper examines various computational approaches, from quantum chemistry to machine learning, highlighting their strengths, limitations, and recent advances in predicting and optimizing lignin-IL interactions. Key themes include the challenges in accurately modeling lignin's complex structure, the development of efficient screening methodologies for ionic liquids to enhance lignin dissolution and valorization processes, and the integration of machine learning with quantum calculations. These computational advances will drive progress in IL-based lignin valorization by providing deeper molecular-level insights and facilitating the rapid screening of novel IL-lignin systems. New asphalt mixtures have been improved by using fibers (polypropylene, polyester, asbestos, carbon, glass, nylon, lignin, coconut, sisal, recycled rubber, PET, wood, bamboo, and cellulose), reducing the temperature and compaction energy for their collocation, minimizing the impact on the environment, increasing the tenacity and resistance to cracking of hot mix asphalt (HMA), preventing asphalt drainage in a Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA). Hence, this paper aims to evaluate the influence of the chemical (lignin content, ash, viscosity, degree of polymerization, and elemental analysis), morphological (SEM), spectroscopic (FTIR-ATR and XRD), and calorimetric (ATG and DSC) properties of celluloses from bagasse Agave tequilana Weber var. Azul (ABP), corrugated paperboard (CPB) and commercial cellulose fiber (CC) as Schellenberg drainage (D) inhibitors of the SMA. The ABP was obtained through a chemical process by alkaline cooking, while CPB by a mechanical refining process. The chemical, morphological, spectroscopic, and calorimetric properties were similar among the analyzed celluloses, but CPB and ABP cellulose are excellent alternatives to CC cellulose for inhibiting drainage. However, CPB is the most effective at low concentrations. The purpose of this study is to characterize the pool of lignin phenols in soils of two contrasting secondary forest ecosystems—boreal and tropical—with different tree species and to assess the rate of biochemical transformation of difficult-to-degrade compounds of lignocelluloses nature in them. A detailed and comparative description of the biochemistry of lignin in soils in experiments on artificial afforestation in Krasnoyarsk krai of Russia (Greyzemic Phaeozems (Albic)) and in the Amazon Region, Brazil (Xanthic Ferralsol) is presented. Determination of lignin in soils involved alkaline oxidation with copper oxide at 170°C under pressure in a nitrogen atmosphere. Lignin phenols (vanillin, syringyl, and cinnamyl) were separated, using gas chromatography. It has been shown that lignin mineralization is rapid in soils of both boreal and tropical secondary forests contrary to soils of natural zonal ecosystems. A significant enrichment of lignin with metabolic carbon is a characteristic feature of this process. Low content, high oxidation rate, and a high degree of transformation of lignin are typical for soils of all the studied secondary forests, for tropical ones in particular, which reduces their potential as carbon sink reservoirs versus taiga soils. Gibberellins (GAs) are a class of plant hormones that can affect plant growth and development. GA-oxidases are rate-limiting enzymes, which play a direct role in GA accumulation in plants. However, the roles of GA-oxidase on carrot (Daucus carota L.) taproot development are still unclear. In this study, two GA-oxidase genes, DcGA20ox2 and DcGA2ox1, were identified in carrot. Transgenic carrot plants were obtained by using Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation method. The results showed that overexpression of DcGA20ox2 significantly promoted the accumulation of active GAs in carrot, increased plant height, generated more branches, and enhanced xylem development. Overexpression of DcGA2ox1 significantly reduced the total contents of active GAs compared with the control group, resulting in a dwarf phenotype and markedly increased lignin content of the transgenic carrot. The expression profiling showed that the genes of GA metabolic pathway responded to the negative feedback regulation mechanism. At the same time, the expression of most genes in lignin biosynthesis and polymerization process was up-regulated, corresponding to the massive accumulation of lignin. These findings indicated that DcGA20ox2 and DcGA2ox1 affected carrot growth and development by regulating the levels of endogenous GAs. For the direct alkaline oxidation of rice husk lignin, we developed a copper foam-based heterogeneous catalyst that offers advantages in its recovery after the reaction mixture. The depolymerized products were utilized for muconate production by an engineered Pseudomonas sp. NGC7-based strain. A hydroxide nanorod-modified copper foam was prepared by the surface oxidation of copper foam, followed by alkaline oxidation of rice husk lignin over the catalyst. The catalyst was easily separated from the cellulosic residues in the reaction mixture, and the residues were then recovered by filtration. The resulting lignin stream was composed of a variety of aromatic monomers containing p -hydroxyphenyl, guaiacyl, and syringyl compounds. The catabolic activity of Pseudomonas sp. NGC7 was demonstrated to be more suitable for muconate production from a mixture comprising 4-hydroxybenzoate (a typical p -hydroxyphenyl compound), vanillate (a guaiacyl compound), and syringate (a syringyl compound), owing to its natural ability to grow on syringate. Thus, it was applied to produce muconate from a rice husk lignin stream prepared through hydroxide nanorod-modified copper foam-catalyzed alkaline oxidation by conferring the genes responsible for converting the acetophenone derivatives to their corresponding aromatic acids and protocatechuate decarboxylase to an NGC7-based strain deficient in protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase and muconate cycloisomerase. Lignocellulosic mass consists of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin. Although biomass promises to be efficiently used for biofuel production and many other value‐added products, lignin present in lignocellulosic biomass affects the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses, making it necessary to develop techniques that provide better lignin removal efficiency and high cellulose hydrolysability. The current work aims to maximize lignin removal in sawdust and develop an understanding of the hydrolysis of pretreated biomass for sugar production. Different parameters such as solvent to solid ratio, temperature, and reaction time have been considered based on the design of experiment to understand the effect on the delignification and saccharification processes. After treating sawdust for 1.5 h, it was observed that a maximum of 85% lignin was removed at a temperature of 131°C and solid loading of 16 g. Subsequent hydrolysis of delignified sawdust at 131°C temperature, solvent to solid ratio 15, and 0.5 h resulted in a maximum reducing sugar production of 26.82 mg/mL. The study elucidated the optimum conditions for the effective processing of sawdust in terms of delignification and saccharification, leading to maximum benefits in lignin removal and sugar production. Exploring microorganisms with downstream synthetic advantages in lignin valorization is an effective strategy to increase target product diversity and yield. This study ingeniously engineers the non-lignin-degrading bacterium Ralstonia eutropha H16 (also known as Cupriavidus necator H16) to convert lignin, a typically underutilized by-product of biorefinery, into valuable bioplastic polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). The aromatic metabolism capacities of R. eutropha H16 for different lignin-derived aromatics (LDAs) are systematically characterized and complemented by integrating robust functional modules including O-demethylation, aromatic aldehyde metabolism and the mitigation of by-product inhibition. A pivotal discovery is the regulatory element PcaQ, which is highly responsive to the aromatic hub metabolite protocatechuic acid during lignin degradation. Based on the computer-aided design of PcaQ, we develop a hub metabolite-based autoregulation (HMA) system. This system can control the functional genes expression in response to heterologous LDAs and enhance metabolism efficiency. Multi-module genome integration and directed evolution further fortify the strain's stability and lignin conversion capacities, leading to PHB production titer of 2.38 g/L using heterologous LDAs as sole carbon source. This work not only marks a leap in bioplastic production from lignin components but also provides a strategy to redesign the non-LDAs-degrading microbes for efficient lignin valorization. Lignin, one of the most abundant biomaterials and a large‐scale industrial waste product, is a promising filler for polymers as it reduces the amount of fossil resources and is readily available. 3D printing is well‐known for producing detailed polymer structures in small sizes at low waste production. Especially light‐assisted 3D printing is a powerful technique for production of high‐resolution structures. However, lignin acts as a very efficient absorber for UV and visible light limiting the printability of lignin composites, reducing its potential as a high‐volume filler. In this work, the decolorization of lignin is presented for high‐resolution 3D printing of biocomposites with lignin content up to 40 wt.%. Organosolv lignin (OSL) is decolorized by an optimized low‐energy process of acetylation and subsequent UV irradiation reducing the UV absorbance by 71%. By integration of decolorized lignin into bio‐based tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate (THFA), a lignin content of 40 wt.% and a resolution of 250 µm is achieved. Due to the reinforcing properties of lignin, the stiffness and strength of the material is increased by factors of 15 and 2.3, respectively. Developing an efficient and green electrode material is vital for energy storage. Herein, a kind of lignin-based porous carbon material with different pore size distribution and high electrochemical properties was prepared by using alkali lignin as a carbon precursor doped with heteroatoms. The effects of different temperature gradients and pore structure on the properties of porous carbon with lignin as precursor were studied. The prepared material has high specific surface area of 1168.4 m2/g, rich pore size distribution, which was conducive to electron transfer and storage, and high nitrogen doping also improved the electrochemical properties of the carbons. The prepared lignin-based carbon material has a considerable specific capacitance of 302 F/g and higher level of cycle stability. The study not only provided a potential strategy for the preparation of cost-effective heteroatom-doped materials from lignin, but also offered a new insight for lignin valorization. Renewable alternatives for nonelectrifiable fossil-derived chemicals are needed and plant matter, the most abundant biomass on Earth, provide an ideal feedstock. However, the heterogeneous polymeric composition of lignocellulose makes conversion difficult. Lignin presents a formidable barrier to fermentation of nonpretreated biomass. Extensive chemical and enzymatic treatments can liberate fermentable carbohydrates from plant biomass, but microbial routes offer many advantages, including concomitant conversion to industrial chemicals. Here, testing of lignin content of nonpretreated biomass using the cellulolytic thermophilic bacterium, Anaerocellum bescii, revealed that the primary microbial degradation barrier relates to methoxy substitutions in lignin. This contrasts with optimal lignin composition for chemical pretreatment that favors high S/G ratio and low H lignin. Genetically modified poplar trees with diverse lignin compositions confirm these findings. In addition, poplar trees with low methoxy content achieve industrially relevant levels of microbial solubilization without any pretreatments and with no impact on tree fitness in greenhouse. In this work, a beneficial approach for efficient depolymerization of lignin and controllable product distribution is provided. Lignin, an abundant aromatic biopolymer, has the potential to produce various biofuels and chemical adsorption agents and is expected to benefit the future circular economy. Microwave-ultrasonic (MW/US) assisted efficient depolymerization of lignin affords some aromatic materials used in manufacturing the starting material to be investigated. Some nano organometallic surfactants (NOMS) based on Ni2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Fe3+, and Mn2+ besides 2-hydroxynaphth-sulphanilamide are synthesized to enhance oil recovery (EOR). In this work, the assessment of the NOMS's efficiency was improving the heavy oil recovery via the study of the dynamic interfacial tension (IFT), contact angle, and chemical flooding scenarios. The NOMS-Ni2+ exhibited the maximum reduction of viscosity and yield values. Dropping the viscosity to 819.9, 659.89, and 499.9 Pa s from blank crude oil viscosity of 9978.8, 8005.6, and 5008.6 Pa s respectively at temperatures of 40, 60, and 80 °C was investigated. The reduction of τB values was obtained also by OMS-Ni2+. The minimum IFT was recorded against the Ni2+ derivatives (0.1 × 10–1 mN m−1). The complete wettability alteration was achieved with the NOMS-Ni2+ surfactant (ɵ ≅ 6.01). The flooding test has been steered in 3 sets using the sand-packed model as a porous media at surfactant concentrations (1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5%) at 50 °C and 499 psi as injection pressure. The best value (ORs) formed for NOMS-Ni2+ were 62, 81, 85.2, and 89% respectively as compared with other NOMS-M2+ at the same concentrations. Lignin has long been regarded as waste, readily separated and discarded from the pulp and paper industry. However, as the most abundant aromatic renewable biopolymer in nature, lignin can replace petroleum resources to prepare chemicals containing benzene rings. Therefore, the high-value transformation of lignin has attracted the interest of both academia and industry. Nitrogen-containing compounds and functionalized materials are a class of compounds that have wide applications in chemistry, materials science, energy storage, and other fields. Converting lignin into nitrogenous chemicals and materials is a high-value utilization pathway. Currently, there is a large amount of literature exploring the conversion of lignin. However, a comprehensive review of the transformation of lignin to nitrogenous compounds is lacking. The research progress of lignin conversion to nitrogenous chemicals and functional materials is reviewed in this article. This article provides an overview of the chemical structure and types of industrial lignin, methods of lignin modification, as well as nitrogen-containing chemicals and functional materials prepared from various types of lignin, including their applications in wastewater treatment, slow-release fertilizer, adhesive, coating, and biomedical fields. In addition, the challenges and limitations of nitrogenous lignin-based materials encountered during the development of applications are also discussed. Background: Lignin is an aromatic polymer deposited in secondary cell walls of higher plants to provide strength, rigidity, and hydrophobicity to vascular tissues. Due to its interconnections with cell wall polysaccharides, lignin plays important roles during plant growth and defense, but also has a negative impact on industrial processes aimed at obtaining monosaccharides from plant biomass. Engineering lignin offers a solution to this issue. For example, previous work showed that heterologous expression of a coliphage S-adenosylmethionine hydrolase (AdoMetase) was an effective approach to reduce lignin in the model plant Arabidopsis. The efficacy of this engineering strategy remains to be evaluated in bioenergy crops. Results: We studied the impact of expressing AdoMetase on lignin synthesis in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench). Lignin content, monomer composition, and size, as well as biomass saccharification efficiency were determined in transgenic sorghum lines. The transcriptome and metabolome were analyzed in stems at three developmental stages. Plant growth and biomass composition was further evaluated under field conditions. Results evidenced that lignin was reduced by 18% in the best transgenic line, presumably due to reduced activity of the S-adenosylmethionine-dependent O-methyltransferases involved in lignin synthesis. The modified sorghum features altered lignin monomer composition and increased lignin molecular weights. The degree of methylation of glucuronic acid on xylan was reduced. These changes enabled a ~20% increase in glucose yield after biomass pretreatment and saccharification compared to wild type. RNA-seq and untargeted metabolomic analyses evidenced some pleiotropic effects associated with AdoMetase expression. The transgenic sorghum showed developmental delay and reduced biomass yields at harvest, especially under field growing conditions. Conclusions: The expression of AdoMetase represents an effective lignin engineering approach in sorghum. However, considering that this strategy potentially impacts multiple S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methyltransferases, adequate promoters for fine-tuning AdoMetase expression will be needed to mitigate yield penalty. Background: Adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) is an impactful technique for cultivating microorganisms to adapt to specific environmental circumstances or substrates through iterative growth and selection. This study utilized an adaptive laboratory evolution method on Lipomyces starkeyi for high tolerance in producing lignin derivative alcohols and lipids from syringaldehyde. Afterward, untargeted metabolomics analysis was employed to find the key metabolites that play important roles in the better performance of evolved strains compared to the wild type. Lignin, a prominent constituent of plant biomass, is a favorable source material for the manufacture of biofuel and lipids. Nevertheless, the effective transformation of chemicals produced from lignin into products with high economic worth continues to be a difficult task. Results: In this study, we exposed L. starkeyi to a series of flask passaging experiments while applying selective pressure to facilitate its adaptation to syringaldehyde, a specific type of lignin monomeric aldehyde. Using ALE, we successfully developed a new strain, DALE-22, which can synthesize syringyl alcohol up to 18.74 mM from 22.28 mM syringaldehyde with 41.9% lipid accumulation. In addition, a comprehensive examination of untargeted metabolomics identified six specific crucial metabolites linked to the improved tolerance of the evolved strain in the utilization of syringaldehyde, including 2-aminobutyric acid, allantoin, 4-hydroxyphenethyl alcohol, 2-aminoethanol, tryptophan, and 5-aminovaleric acid. Conclusion: The results of our study reveal how L. starkeyi adapts to using substrates produced from lignin. These findings offer important information for developing strategies to improve the process of converting lignin into valuable products for sustainable biorefinery applications. Hydroxyethyl cellulose/nanolignin composite films were prepared and characterized. The composite films were produced via casting of synthesized nanolignin added to hydroxyethyl cellulose at different concentrations (2.5%, 5%, 10%, and 20% by mass). A control film without nanolignin was also prepared for comparison. The thermal properties of the composite films were examined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), while the mechanical properties were determined by tensile testing and the surface properties were determined by water contact angle measurements. In addition, the morphologies of the samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that with the addition of nano lignin, the glass transition temperature of the composite films increased from 109 °C to 262 °C; the elongation at break increased from 19% to 51%; and the contact angles increased from 53 °C to 73 °C. The results showed that the presence of nanolignin produced materials being more flexible and more hydrophobic with higher glass transition temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lignin valorisation into chemicals and fuels is of great importance in addressing energy challenges and advancing biorefining in a sustainable manner. In this study, on the basis of the high microwave absorption performance of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), a series of copper-oxide-loaded CNT catalysts (CuO/CNT) were developed to facilitate the oxidative depolymerization of lignin under microwave heating. This catalyst can promote the activation of hydrogen peroxide and air, effectively generating a range of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Through the application of electron paramagnetic resonance techniques, these ROS generated under different oxidation conditions were detected to elucidate the oxidation mechanism. The results demonstrate that the •OH and O2•− play a crucial role in the formation of aldehyde and ketone products through the cleavage of lignin Cβ-O and Cα-Cβ bonds. We further evaluated the catalytic performance of the CuO/CNT catalysts with three typical lignin feedstocks to determine their applicability for lignin biorefinery. The bio-enzymatic lignin produced a 13.9% monophenol yield at 200 °C for 20 min under microwave heating, which was higher than the 7% yield via hydrothermal heating conversion. The selectivity of G-/H-/S-type products was slightly affected, while lignin substrate had a noticeable effect on the selective production. Overall, this study explored the structural characteristics of CuO/CNT catalysts and their implications for lignin conversion and offered an efficient oxidation approach that holds promise for sustainable biorefining practices. This article explores the important, and yet often overlooked, solid-state structures of selected bioaromatic compounds commonly found in lignin hydrogenolysis oil, a renewable bio-oil that holds great promise to substitute fossil-based aromatic molecules in a wide range of chemical and material industrial applications. At first, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) was applied to the lignin model compounds, dihydroconiferyl alcohol, propyl guaiacol, and eugenol dimers, in order to elucidate the fundamental molecular interactions present in such small lignin-derived polyols. Then, considering the potential use of these lignin-derived molecules as building blocks for polymer applications, structural analysis was also performed for two chemically modified model compounds, i.e., the methylene-bridging propyl-guaiacol dimer and propyl guaiacol and eugenol glycidyl ethers, which can be used as precursors in phenolic and epoxy resins, respectively, thus providing additional information on how the molecular packing is altered following chemical modifications. In addition to the expected H-bonding interactions, other interactions such as π–π stacking and C–H∙∙∙π were observed. This resulted in unexpected trends in the tendencies towards the crystallization of lignin compounds. The preparation of traditional wood-based panels mostly uses adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde resin and phenolic resin, which not only consumes petrochemical resources but also releases formaldehyde, posing potential health risks to the human body. Lignin, a natural adhesive in plant cells, is characterized by high reactivity, and it is expected to aid in the development of a new generation of green formaldehyde-free adhesives. However, current studies of lignin adhesives have revealed that while strides have been made in reducing formaldehyde emissions, its residual presence remains a concern, an issue which is compounded by inadequate water resistance. Dehydrogenated Polymer (DHP) has a lignin-like structure and good water resistance, offering a new option for the development of formaldehyde-free adhesives. In this paper, DHP and glucuronic acid were reacted with each other in a simulated hot-pressing environment to obtain DHP-glucuronic acid complex, and then the structure of the complex was characterized by infrared nuclear magnetic resonance to verify whether DHP can be efficiently connected with hemicellulose components under hot-pressing conditions. The results showed that the thermal condensation reaction of DHP and glucuronic acid can generate ester bonds at the Cα position in a simulated hot-pressing environment. This paper explores the thermal condensation mechanism of DHP and glucuronic acid, which is helpful for understanding the bonding process between adhesives and components of wood-based panels in the hot-pressing process, and provides key theoretical support for the design of more sustainable lignin adhesives. Lignin, the second most abundant renewable carbon source on earth, holds significant potential for producing biobased specialty chemicals. However, its complex, highly branched structure, consisting of phenylpropanoic units and strong carbon-carbon and ether bonds, makes it highly resistant to depolymerisation. This recalcitrancy highlights the need to search for robust lignin-degrading microorganisms with potential for use as industrial strains. Bioprospecting for microorganisms from lignin-rich niches is an attractive approach among others. Here, we explored the ligninolytic potential of bacteria isolated from a lignin-rich underground coalmine, the Morupule Coal Mine, in Botswana. Using a culture-dependent approach, we screened for the presence of bacteria that could grow on 2.5% kraft lignin-supplemented media and identified them using 16 S rRNA sequencing. The potential ligninolytic isolates were evaluated for their ability to tolerate industry-associated stressors. We report the isolation of twelve isolates with ligninolytic abilities. Of these, 25% (3) isolates exhibited varying robust ligninolytic ability and tolerance to various industrial stressors. The molecular identification revealed that the isolates belonged to the Enterobacter genus. Two of three isolates had a 16 S rRNA sequence lower than the identity threshold indicating potentially novel species pending further taxonomic review. ATR-FTIR analysis revealed the ligninolytic properties of the isolates by demonstrating structural alterations in lignin, indicating potential KL degradation, while Py-GC/MS identified the resulting biochemicals. These isolates produced chemicals of diverse functional groups and monomers as revealed by both methods. The use of coalmine-associated ligninolytic bacteria in biorefineries has potential. Drought stress is a major constraint on plant growth and agricultural productivity. Caffeic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT), an enzyme involved in the methylation of various substrates, plays a pivotal role in plant responses to abiotic stress. The involvement of COMTs in drought response, particularly through the enhancement of lignin and melatonin biosynthesis, remains poorly understood. In this study, LcCOMT was firstly proposed to be associated with the biosynthesis of both lignin and melatonin, as demonstrated through sequence comparison, phylogenetic analysis, and conserved motif identification. In vitro enzymatic assays revealed that LcCOMT effectively methylates N-acetylserotonin to melatonin, albeit with a higher Km value compared to caffeic acid. Sitedirected mutagenesis of residues Phe171 and Asp269 resulted in a significant reduction in catalytic activity for caffeic acid, with minimal impact on Nacetylserotonin, underscoring the specificity of these residues in substrate binding and catalysis. Under drought conditions, LcCOMT expression was significantly upregulated. Overexpression of LcCOMT gene in Arabidopsis plants conferred enhanced drought tolerance, characterized by elevated lignin and melatonin levels, increased chlorophyll and carotenoid content, heightened activities of antioxidant enzymes peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation. This study is among the few to demonstrate that COMT-mediated drought tolerance is achieved through the simultaneous promotion of lignin and melatonin biosynthesis. A first-order kinetic model for the simultaneous anaerobic–aerobic degradation of municipal solid waste (MSW) is presented in the study. The model incorporates the effect of oxygen concentration on anaerobic degradation, enabling the coexistence of anaerobic and aerobic processes within specific oxygen ranges. The model can thoroughly consider the impacts of temperature, moisture content, oxygen concentration, and free air space (FAS) on the degradation rates of five substrates, i.e., holocellulose, non-cellulosic sugars, proteins, lipids, and lignin. The model was successfully verified against two experimental results. The sequential model underestimates both compression strain and degradation ratio, with peak underestimation ratios of 8.7% and 9.2%, respectively. Using the simultaneous model, the effects of anaerobic age, temperature, and aeration rate on landfill aerobic remediation efficacy are quantitatively assessed. Two evaluation criteria, namely the advance rate of aerobic remediation stabilization time (Rt) and the degradation rate after 100 days of aerobic remediation ( λ 100 a ), are adopted. The results indicate the following: (1) Rt is more sensitive to anaerobic age and temperature, while λ 100 a is more affected by anaerobic age and aeration rate; (2) under optimal conditions, Rt and λ 100 a can reach 86.3% and 70.9%, respectively. The present model provides a crucial theoretical framework for evaluating aerobic remediation effectiveness in both anaerobic sanitary landfills and informal landfills, offering valuable insights for practical implementation and management. Postharvest ethylene accumulation and lignification are significant issues affecting the storage quality of fresh faba beans, resulting in rapid quality decline. However, there is still a lack of effective preservation methods to preserve the quality of faba beans during storage. This study aimed to investigate the regulation of lignification in faba beans during storage using a high-efficiency ethylene remover (HEER), examining physiological responses, key enzyme activities, and transcriptomic changes. Results showed that the HEER treatment inhibited the lignification, reducing it by 45% and lowering the respiratory rate of fresh pods by 32.8% during storage. Additionally, the HEER treatment suppressed respiration rates and the activities of lignin synthesis-related enzymes, including phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (from 353.73 to 246.60 U/g), cinnamic acid-4-hydroxylase (from 635.86 to 125.00 U/g), 4-coumarate: coenzyme A ligase (from 1008.57 to 516.52 U/g), and cinnamyl-alcohol dehydrogenase (from 129.42 to 37.12 U/g), thus slowing lignin accumulation. During storage, the hardness of fresh faba bean increased by 9.79% from the initial period, being 1.44 times higher than that of HEER. On days 8 and 16 of storage, the respiratory rate of the treated beans decreased by 24.38% and 4.12%, respectively. Physiological and enzyme activity analyses indicated that HEER treatment-induced increase in hardness was associated with the phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway. Moreover, the HEER significantly down-regulated the expression of several key genes, namely FaPAL, FaC4H, and FaCAD. The study was designed to explore the efficiency of magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs)/bacterial cell assembly to biodegrade lignin and lignocellulose, decontaminate pulp and paper-contaminated wastewater and optimize lignin adsorption by Fe3O4 NPs. Water samples were collected from three paper and carton manufacturing companies, Alexandria Governorate, Egypt. Pseudomonas otitidis MCC10330, the most active and promising strain among 10 previously screened indigenous and exogenous isolates, was selected and decorated with magnetic Fe3O4 Nanoparticles, that were prepared by the co-precipitation method, characterized and used to decontaminate paper and pulp effluent in a batch mode bioassay for 4 h. Fe3O4 NPs/bacterial cell assembly achieved the highest removals (64.1, 52.0, 54.3 and 66.6%) of TSS, COD, BOD, and Total Tannin and Lignin after 1, 4 and 4 h, reaching residual concentrations (RCs) of 322, 216, 112 and 7 mg/L, which are still slightly higher (5.35, 2.7 and 1.86-fold) than their maximum permissible limits (MPLs), respectively. RCs of pH, DO and TDS in the treated effluent are accepted for safe discharging. Maximum lignin adsorption and removal (82.14%) using Fe3O4 NPs was achieved at the optimized conditions (pH 6, Fe3O4 NPs dosage of 100 mg and 10 min contact time). Results confirmed that the proposed magnetite-coated Pseudomonas otitidis treatment system is highly efficient and recommended to treat the highly contaminated pulp and paper wastewater. Also, as far as we know, this integrated assemblage is the first time to be used as a novel, very promising, eco-friendly, renewable and economical biotechnological approach to minimize/eliminate the involved pollutants with the least running time. The cultivation of horticultural plants in controlled greenhouse environments is a pivotal practice in modern agriculture, offering the potential to enhance crop productivity and mitigate climate change effects. This study investigates the biomechanical properties and lignin content of various Capsicum annuum mutant lines—'fragile-plant' (frx), 'tortuous internodi' (tti), and 'puffy-structured stem' (pfi)—in comparison to a commercially established variety, 'Garai Fehér'. We employed the acetyl bromide method to quantify lignin content and conducted three-point bending tests to assess rigidity in three distinct regions of the stem. Gene expression analysis of key lignin biosynthetic pathway genes (PAL, C4H, 4CL, CCoAOMT, CAD) was performed using qRT-PCR. The results revealed significant differences in lignin content and breaking force among the genotypes and stem regions. The tti mutants exhibited similar lignin content to the control but lower breaking strength, likely due to elongated internodes. The frx mutants showed uniformly reduced lignin content, correlating with their fragile stems. The pfi mutants displayed abnormally high lignin content in the top region yet demonstrated the lowest stem rigidity in every region. Overexpression of CAD and CCoAOMT was detected in the mutants in specific regions of the stem, suggesting alterations in lignin biosynthesis; however, we could not confirm the correlation between them. Electrochemical methods for breaking this bond are not well-studied. This paper presents a novel approach for catalytic depolymerization of lignin to produce acetals under mild conditions, without the need for additional catalysts. Under room temperature and in an air atmosphere, the combination of tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBABF 4) as an auxiliary electrolyte and methanol (MeOH) as a solvent has shown high selectivity in catalyzing the cleavage of C α C β bonds in lignin. Over 90.0 % of the resulting products are acetals, with the optimal conditions being a substrate concentration of 0.02 M, TBABF 4 concentration of 0.008 M, a constant current of 30 mA, and a reaction time of 3 h. This led to a substrate conversion rate of 95.8 % and a product yield of 98.0 % for benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal (Bda). The mechanism study reveals that the tributyl ammonium radical cation decomposed by TBABF 4 is adsorbed on the electrode surface. Subsequently, the adsorbed O 2 is activated to form superoxide anion radical active species through single electron transfer, which plays a crucial catalytic role. TBABF 4 acts as both an auxiliary electrolyte and a catalyst in this process. Direct lignin fuel cells (DLFC) are one of the important forms of high value-added utilization of lignin. In this study, lignin was studied not only as a fuel but also as a catalyst. Specifically, Kraft lignin was modified with ZnCl 2 , KOH and THF (Tetrahydrofuran) respectively, and added to the catalyst after activation. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Brunauer − Emmett − Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectra shown that AL/FePc-NrGO (activated lignin/iron phthalocyanine/nitrogen-doped reduction of graphene oxide) three-dimensional composite catalyst has been synthesized. The results showed that KOH-activated Kraft lignin had the best performance as an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, with a half-wave potential (E 1/2) of 0.73 V and a limiting diffusion current density of 4.3 mA cm−1. The THF-modified catalyst showed similar stability and methanol resistance to 20 % Pt/C at ORR. The ORR catalyst applied to the DLFC has the best electrical performance with an open circuit voltage (OCV) was 0.53 V and the maximum power density it could reach 95.29 mW m−2 when the catalyst was modified with THF. It is encouraging that the AL/FePc-NrGO catalyst has better-generated electricity performance than 20 % Pt/C. The multiscale structure of lignin from monomers to oligomers, provides a potential pathway for precise regulation of its physical and chemical properties. The study addresses this challenge by employing coniferyl alcohol and sinapyl alcohol as monomers and separately utilizing the Zulaufverfaren (ZL) and Zutropfverfaren (ZT) methods to synthesize different types of lignin dehydrogenation polymers (DHPs) including guaiacyl (G)-ZL-DHP, G-ZT-DHP, syringyl (S)-ZL-DHP, and S-ZT-DHP. The investigation highlights the chemical bonds as essential components of lignin primary structure. Additionally, the secondary structure is influenced by branched and linear molecular structures. G unit provides some branching points, which are utilized and amplified in the ZL process of DHPs synthesis. The branched DHPs aggregate at the edge and form rod-like LNPs. While linear DHPs aggregate around the center, presenting polygonal LNPs. The study identifies that the branched LNPs, characterized by more surface charges and lower steric hindrance, can form a stable complex with chitin nanofibers. The problems encountered in the application of biomass materials for EMI shielding are summarized, and the potential development and application in the future are prospected. Research efforts on electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have begun to converge on green and sustainable biomass materials. These materials offer numerous advantages such as being lightweight, porous, and hierarchical. Due to their porous nature, interfacial compatibility, and electrical conductivity, biomass materials hold significant potential as EMI shielding materials. Despite concerted efforts on the EMI shielding of biomass materials have been reported, this research area is still relatively new compared to traditional EMI shielding materials. In particular, a more comprehensive study and summary of the factors influencing biomass EMI shielding materials including the pore structure adjustment, preparation process, and micro-control would be valuable. The preparation methods and characteristics of wood, bamboo, cellulose and lignin in EMI shielding field are critically discussed in this paper, and similar biomass EMI materials are summarized and analyzed. The composite methods and fillers of various biomass materials were reviewed. this paper also highlights the mechanism of EMI shielding as well as existing prospects and challenges for development trends in this field. Enzymatic hydrolysis contributes to obtaining fermentable sugars using pretreated lignocellulose materials for bioethanol generation. Unfortunately, the pretreatment of lignocellulose causes low substrate enzymatic hydrolysis, which is due to the structure changes of lignin to produce main phenolic by-products and non-productive cellulase adsorption. It is reported that modified lignin enhances the speed of enzymatic hydrolysis through single means to decrease the negative effects of fermentation inhibitors or non-productive cellulase adsorption. However, a suitable modified lignin should be selected to simultaneously reduce the fermentation inhibitors concentration and non-productive cellulase adsorption for saving resources and maximizing the enzymatic hydrolysis productivity. Meanwhile, the adsorption micro-mechanisms of modified lignin with fermentation inhibitors and cellulase remain elusive. In this review, different pretreatment effects toward lignin structure, and their impacts on subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis are analyzed. The main modification methods for lignin are presented. Density functional theory is used to screen suitable modification methods for the simultaneous reduction of fermentation inhibitors and non-productive cellulase adsorption. Lignin-fermentation inhibitors and lignin-cellulase interaction mechanisms are discussed using different advanced analysis techniques. This article addresses the gap in previous reviews concerning the application of modified lignin in the enhancement of bioethanol production. For the first time, based on existing studies, this work posits the hypothesis of applying theoretical simulations to screen efficient modified lignin-based adsorbents, in order to achieve a dual optimization of the detoxification and saccharification processes. Coal water slurry (CWS) has been considered a cleaner and sustainable alternative to coal. However, the challenging suspension of coal particles in CWS has created a major obstacle to its use in industry. This study presents a novel approach to enhance the stability and rheological properties of coal water slurry (CWS) through the utilization of carboxyalkylated lignin (CL) as a dispersant. The generated CL samples had high water solubility of around 9 g/L and a charge density of around 2 mmol/g. All CLs were able to stabilize the coal suspension, and their performance decreased due to the increase in the alkyl chain length of carboxyalkylated lignin. Carboxymethylated lignin (CL-1) improved the stability of the coal suspensions with the lowest instability index of less than 0.6. The addition of CLs reduced the contact angle of the coal surface from 45.3° to 34.6°, and the increase in the alkyl chain length hampered its effect on contact angle changes. The zeta potential measurements confirmed that the adsorption of CL enhanced the electrostatic repulsion between coal particles in suspensions, and the zeta potential decreased with the increased alkyl chain length of CLs due to increased steric hindrance. The rheology results indicated that CLs demonstrated shear thinning behavior. This innovative method showcases the affinity of carboxyalkylated lignin to improve the performance of CWS, offering an environmentally friendly alternative for producing a cleaner product, i.e., sustainable coal water slurry, with improved suspension stability. Summary: The genetic control underlying natural variation in lignin content and composition in trees is not fully understood. We performed a systems genetic analysis to uncover the genetic regulation of lignin biosynthesis in a natural 'SwAsp' population of aspen (Populus tremula) trees.We analyzed gene expression by RNA sequencing (RNA‐seq) in differentiating xylem tissues, and lignin content and composition using Pyrolysis‐GC‐MS in mature wood of 268 trees from 99 genotypes.Abundant variation was observed for lignin content and composition, and genome‐wide association study identified proteins in the pentose phosphate pathway and arabinogalactan protein glycosylation among the top‐ranked genes that are associated with these traits. Variation in gene expression and the associated genetic polymorphism was revealed through the identification of 312 705 local and 292 003 distant expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL). A co‐expression network analysis suggested modularization of lignin biosynthesis and novel functions for the lignin‐biosynthetic CINNAMYL ALCOHOL DEHYDROGENASE 2 and CAFFEOYL‐CoA O‐METHYLTRANSFERASE 3. Potato black scurf caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn is widespread worldwide. The exploration and analysis of the infection mechanism of Rhizoctonia solani Kühn has important scientific significance to enhance the disease resistance of potato and other horticultural crops, and then break the restriction of fungal harm to agricultural production. The physiological and biochemical indexes and the expression levels of related genes were measured at 0, 1, 4, 8 and 16 days (T0, T1, T2, T3, T4) after inoculation with pathogenic bacteria. The results showed that the contents of L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), peroxidase (POD), lignin, total phenols (TP), and flavonoids increased significantly in potato after infection by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn, with the contents of PAL and POD reaching a peak at 8 d and then decreasing, and the contents of lignin and total phenols changing most significantly, reaching the highest levels at day 8 (T3) and day 16 (T4), respectively. During the infestation, the content of eight phenolic compounds increased, and the genes responsible for the lignin synthesis pathway were upregulated. However, in the later stage of infestation, the expression of two genes (PAL PG0031457 and PG2021549, HCT PG0014959, and COMT PG0011266) was down-regulated. In the correlation analysis, gene expression levels of all the genes, except POD (PG0005062), CCoAOMT (PG0018688), and COMT (PG0011266), were found to be positively correlated with the contents of lignin, total phenols, flavonoids, PAL, POD, and eight phenolic substances. Therefore, based on a sound understanding of the occurrence mechanism of Potato black scurf, this experiment analyzed the effect of Rhizoctonia solani Kühn infestation on the content of relevant metabolites in the lignin synthesis pathway as well as gene expression in potatoes, which provides a scientific basis for the prevention and control management of potato black scurf. Summary Monolignol serves as the building blocks to constitute lignin, the second abundant polymer on Earth. Despite two decades of diligent efforts, complete identification of all metabolites in the currently proposed monolignol biosynthesis pathway has proven elusive. This limitation also hampers their potential application. One of the primary obstacles is the challenge of assembling a collection of all molecules, because many are commercially unavailable or prohibitively costly. In this study, we established systematic pipelines to synthesize all 24 molecules through the conversions between functional groups on a core structure followed by the application to other core structures. We successfully identified all of them in Populus trichocarpa and Eucalyptus grandis, two representative species respectively from malpighiales and myrtales in angiosperms. Highlights: The lignin in paddy and wheat straws is highly resistant to degradation, and burning the same is a global warming issue. Dye degrading ability and expression of three vp genes were studied in Pleurotus ostreatus and Fusarium sp. cultures. High enzymatic activity and the vp2 gene were observed in the Fusarium sp. culture, which makes it an alternate fungal species for lignin degradation. Lignocellulosic biomass is contemplated to be an inexpensive and copious feedstock that can be used for numerous industrial applications. However, lignin forms the lignin sheath and provides a physical barrier to enzymatic hydrolysis. In addition, lignin physically blocks cellulase, preventing it from being combined with the substrate in a process known as non-productive binding. Therefore, the depletion of lignin is a crucial method for obtaining fermentable sugars from the lignocellulosic biomass. Different white-rot fungi secrete different sets of lignin-mineralizing enzymes and each fungus secretes one or more of the three enzymes essential for lignin degradation. Among efficient redox enzymes, versatile peroxidase is extensively studied for its ability to degrade aromatics without the need for a mediator or polyvalent catalytic site. However, the presence of versatile peroxidase in F. spp. has not been studied. This study was planned with the objective of screening and comparing the production of versatile peroxidase enzymes from F. spp. and a standard culture of Pleurotus ostreatus MTCC-142. These fungal strains were first screened on solid media containing tannic acid, malachite green, or bromocresol green. The potency index for the tannic acid, malachite green, and bromocresol green on the 16th day of incubation was reported to be 1.28, 1.07, 1.09, and 1.10, respectively. Versatile peroxidase production patterns were investigated under solid state fermentation conditions for a period of 25 days at different temperatures ranging from 10 to 35 °C. The highest versatile peroxidase activity (592 UL−1) in F. sp. was observed at 30 °C after the 7th day of incubation. The molecular confirmation showed the presence of the vp gene in F. sp. along with Pleurotus ostreatus MTCC-142. The results determined that F. sp. possesses a versatile peroxidase enzyme and is able to degrade lignin efficiently, and thus it could be utilized as an alternative to other ligninolytic enzyme-producing fungi. Lignin, the earth's second-most abundant biopolymer after cellulose, has long been relegated to low-value byproducts in the pulp and paper industry. However, recent advancements in valorization are transforming lignin into a sustainable and versatile feedstock for producing high-value biofuels, bioplastics, and specialty chemicals. This review explores the conversion of lignin's complex structure, composed of syringyl (S), guaiacyl (G), and p-hydroxyphenyl (H) units, into value-added products. We critically assess various biochemical and analytical techniques employed for comprehensive lignin characterization. Additionally, we explore strategies for lignin upgrading and functionalization to enhance its suitability for advanced biomaterials. The review emphasizes key areas of lignin valorization, including catalytic depolymerization methods, along with the associated challenges and advancements. We discuss its potential as a feedstock for diverse products such as biofuels, bioplastics, carbon fibers, adhesives, and phenolic compounds. Furthermore, the review briefly explores lignin's inherent properties as a UV protectant and antioxidant, alongside its potential for incorporation into polymer blends and composites. By presenting recent advancements and case studies from the literature, this review highlights the significant economic and environmental benefits of lignin valorization, including waste reduction, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and decreased reliance on non-renewable resources. Finally, we address future perspectives and challenges associated with achieving large-scale, techno-economically feasible, and environmentally sustainable lignin valorization. Lignin, one of Earth's most abundant biopolymers, is rich in phenolic and aliphatic functional groups, offering significant potential for chemical modification. Technical lignin, a byproduct of the kraft process, is produced in large quantities annually and can be used to enhance the properties of polymer matrices such as polypropylene (PP). PP, a widely used nonpolar polymer, suffers from low surface free energy, leading to poor adhesion properties. Combining PP with polar, renewable-source polymers like lignin can improve these properties. This study investigates the direct acetylation of kraft lignin (KL) to improve its dispersion in the PP matrix and enhance wettability and adhesion. The acetylation of KL was confirmed through FTIR and DSC analyses. PP and acetylated KL (AKL) were combined and processed via continuous extrusion. The blends' thermal and mechanical properties, lignin dispersion, and wettability were evaluated. Additionally, PP and PP–lignin films were bonded to aluminized biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) for peel tests. Results showed increased surface free energy and improved adhesion, particularly in samples with AKL due to better dispersion. This direct acetylation route significantly enhances PP's surface free energy and adhesion, presenting a sustainable alternative to fossil-based materials and promoting the use of lignin, a renewable and low-cost polymer. Simple Summary: Phenylalanine/tyrosine ammonia-lyase (PTAL) is a bifunctional enzyme that can deaminate both phenylalanine and tyrosine. To explore the efficiency of lignin biosynthesis with the bifunctional enzyme, we applied a comparable experimental system consisting of transgenic and non-transgenic Arabidopsis and crop-weedy rice hybrid (CWRH) lineages to analyze lignin-biosynthesis associated metabolites. We found substantial increases in EPSPS gene expression, phenylalanine and tyrosine contents, total lignin and its monolignols (lignin units), and biomass in the experimental materials. Importantly, these results demonstrated that overexpressing the EPSPS genes in Arabidopsis and CWRH lineages increased phenylalanine and tyrosine levels, which significantly promoted lignin biosynthesis and biomass production in the transgenic CWRH lineages serve as a sink for plant carbon fixation. These findings are important for a better understanding of the PAL and PTAL's functions in different plant species, in addition to efficient carbon fixation by genetic engineering in plants. Lignin is a key metabolite for terrestrial plants. Two types of aromatic amino acids, phenylalanine (Phe) and tyrosine (Tyr), serve as the precursors for lignin biosynthesis. In most plant species, Phe is deaminated by Phe ammonia-lyase (PAL) to initiate lignin biosynthesis, but in grass species, Phe and Tyr are deaminated by Phe/Tyr ammonia-lyase (PTAL). To understand the efficiency of PAL and PTAL, we used transgenic and non-transgenic Arabidopsis with PAL and crop-weedy rice hybrids (CWRH) with PTAL to analyze lignin-biosynthesis-associated metabolites. The transgenic plants overexpressed the exogenous 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) gene, whereas the non-transgenic plants normally expressed the endogenous EPSPS gene. Our results show significantly increased Phe/Tyr contents in transgenic Arabidopsis and CWRH plants, leading to substantially increased lignin and biomass. In addition, the PTAL pathway promotes a much greater proportion of increased lignin and biomass in transgenic CWRH than in transgenic Arabidopsis lineages. Evidently, more efficient lignin biosynthesis characterized the grass species possessing the PTAL pathway. These findings are important for a better understanding of the PAL and PTAL's functions in the phenylpropanoid metabolic pathways in the evolution of plant species. UV-B stress destroys the photosynthetic system of Rhododendron chrysanthum Pall. (R. chrysanthum), as manifested by the decrease of photosynthetic efficiency and membrane fluidity, and also promotes the accumulation of lignin. The MYB (v-myb avian myeloblastosis viral oncogene homolog) family of transcription factors can be involved in the response to UV-B stress through the regulation of lignin biosynthesis. This study indicated that both the donor and recipient sides of the R. chrysanthum were significantly damaged based on physiological index measurements made using OJIP curves under UV-B stress. The analysis of bioinformatics data revealed that the RcTRP5 transcription factor exhibits upregulation of acetylation at the K68 site, directly regulating the biosynthesis of lignin. Additionally, there was upregulation of the K43 site and downregulation of the K83 site of the CAD enzyme, as well as upregulation of the K391 site of the PAL enzyme. Based on these findings, we conjectured that the RcTRP5 transcription factor facilitates acetylation modification of both enzymes, thereby indirectly influencing the biosynthesis of lignin. This study demonstrated that lignin accumulation can alleviate the damage caused by UV-B stress to R. chrysanthum, which provides relevant ideas for improving lignin content in plants, and also provides a reference for the study of the metabolic regulation mechanism of other secondary substances. Although lignin is a plentiful biomass resource, it continually exists as an underutilized component of biomass material. Elemental sulfur is another abundant yet underutilized commodity produced as a by-product resulting from the refining of fossil fuels. The current study presents a strategy for preparing five durable composites via a simple one-pot synthesis involving the reaction of lignin oil and elemental sulfur. These lignin oil–sulfur composites LOSx@T (where x = wt. % sulfur, ranging from 80 to 90, and T represents the reaction temperature in °C) were prepared via the reaction of elemental sulfur and lignin oil (LO) with elemental sulfur. The resulting composites could be remelted and reshaped several times without the loss of mechanical strength. Mechanical, thermal, and morphological studies showed that LOSx@T possesses properties competitive with some mechanical properties of commercial building materials, exhibiting favorable compressive strengths (22.1–35.9 MPa) and flexural strengths (5.7–6.5 MPa) exceeding the values required for many construction applications of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and brick formulations. While varying the amount of organic material did not result in a notable difference in mechanical strength, increasing the reaction temperature from 230 to 300 °C resulted in a significant increase in compressive strength. The results reported herein reveal potential applications of both lignin and waste sulfur during the ongoing effort toward developing recyclable and sustainable building materials. The massive consumption of fossil fuels has led to the serious accumulation of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere and global warming. Bioconversion technologies that utilize biomass resources to produce chemical products are becoming widely accepted and highly recognized. The world is heavily dependent on petroleum-based products, which may raise serious concerns about future environmental security. Most commercially available epoxy resins (EPs) are synthesized by the condensation of bisphenol A (BPA), which not only affects the human endocrine system and metabolism, but is also costly to produce and environmentally polluting. In some cases, straw tar-based epoxy resins have been recognized as potential alternatives to bisphenol A-based epoxy resins, and are receiving increasing attention due to their important role in overcoming the above problems. Using straw tar and lignin as the main raw materials, phenol derivatives were extracted from the middle tar instead of bisphenol A. Bio-based epoxy resins were prepared by replacing epichlorohydrin with epoxylated lignin to press carbon fiber sheets, which is a kind of bio-based fine chemical product. This paper reviews the research progress of bio-based materials such as lignin modification, straw pyrolysis, lignin epoxidation, phenol derivative extraction, and synthesis of epoxy resin. It improves the performance of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) while taking into account the ecological and environmental protection, so that the epoxy resin is developed in the direction of non-toxic, harmless and high-performance characteristics, and it also provides a new idea for the development of bio-based carbon fibers. As the only natural source of aromatic biopolymers, lignin can be converted into value-added chemicals and biofuels, showing great potential in realizing the development of green chemistry. At present, lignin is predominantly used for combustion to generate energy, and the real value of lignin is difficult to maximize. Accordingly, the depolymerization of lignin is of great significance for its high-value utilization. This review discusses the latest progress in the field of lignin depolymerization, including catalytic conversion systems using various thermochemical, chemocatalytic, photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and biological depolymerization methods, as well as the involved reaction mechanisms and obtained products of various protocols, focusing on green and efficient lignin depolymerization strategies. We developed a series of heteropolyacid-modified lignin-MOF derived bimetallic catalyst for the efficient in situ hydrogenation/hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using isopropanol as hydrogen-donating solvent. [Display omitted] Catalytic conversion of biomass-derived value-added chemicals was of great significance for the utilization of renewable biomass resources to instead of fossil chemicals. Biomass-derived lignin was regarded as an important support and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was a vital platform chemical derived from cellulose. Herein, a series of lignin-MOF hybrid catalysts were prepared and modified with different heteropolyacids (HPAs), which were then successfully introduced into the selective conversion of HMF to 5-hydroxymethylfurfuryl alcohol (MFA). The effect of different HPA, calcination temperature, etc. were all studied, and all catalysts were well characterized. It was confirmed that silicotungstic acid modified catalyst (Ni 3 Co-MOF-LS@HSiW) exhibited the best catalytic performance, while the highest conversion of HMF was up to 100%, with the best MFA yield of 86.5%. This paper reports process development for the extraction of silica from paddy straw pretreated with green solvent and its characterization. Paddy straw pretreated with ethyl lactate resulted in a maximum reduction of total solids (11.78%), volatile solids (1.66%), cellulose (4.38%), hemicellulose (28.00%) and lignin (9.64%), while the increase in ash and silica content by 7.18 and 37.30%, respectively. Silica was extracted from 1% pretreated paddy straw using base dissolution and acid precipitation methods and was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) using three parameters, viz. slurry concentration, and NaOH and HCl normalities to improve the silica yield. Maximum silica yield of 1.57 g per 2.5 g paddy straw ash (PSA) with 62.8% recovery was achieved under the optimized conditions of 2.50% slurry concentration, 0.55 N NaOH and 1.50 N HCl. Physico-chemical characterization by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the purity of extracted silica particles by IR peak patterns. Field emission scanning electron microscopy showed an agglomerate form of 50–200 nm amorphous silica. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy of residual ash inferred its potential as fertilizer in the fields. Paper-based materials made from cellulose have been sought after as a sustainable and inexpensive packaging option. However, the porous structure and high hydrophilicity of paper-based materials result in inadequate water and oil repellency, as well as a limited water vapor barrier. In this work, lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) were prepared using a high-speed homogenizer, and subsequently coated on base paper along with cationic starch to enhance its multi-barrier performance to facilitate the packaging application. The LNPs obtained through such a facile process formed stable colloidal dispersion in water, which exhibited excellent interfacial compatibility with cationic starch. During the coating process, a highly adhesive emulsion consisting of cationic starch and LNPs were coated on the surface of base paper, imparting good hydrophobic properties to the paper. The resulting paper material exhibited good water resistance (Cobb value of 37.5 g m 2), high oil resistance (Kit rating 9) and tensile strength (48.93 MPa). The reduction in water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) exceeds sixfold.
