13. The internationalisation process of firms producing consumer-oriented foods:identity,embeddedness, information, and resources

Abstract

The study can be summarised as the investigation of the nexus between information,knowledge and internationalisation-related decisions, in case embeddedness (a profound re-lation with the local culture) is a signature feature of firms. This relation is analysed througha multi-country study, in a three-year independent project that investigates the irrationalcomponents of managerial decisions. The study investigates how information converts intoknowledge, a topic that is seldom discussed in research. Information is selected, transformed,and eventually transmitted to the managers. Then, the decision-maker filters all informationand knowledge. The process continues until the final decision is taken. Information is centralin all parts of the project: as the medium connecting all stakeholders, and as the way theyexpress their identity. Managerial decisions are investigated through the flow of information;identifying who select and transmit information, and how such information becomes newknowledge. The study focuses only on the irrational component of managerial decisions; itdoes not discuss costs, profits or logistics. Rather, it investigates feelings, familiarity, idiosyn-crasies, even biases, which shape the firm’s persona. This investigation is one of the two, in-terrelated parts compose the study, each based on a different methodology.The study begins with a quantitative analysis, investigating the observable effects of infor-mation on international trade. Familiarity with the export market is found to be relevant forboth market selection and trade development, only for few products (namely consumer-ori-ented food products, and the food sector), but not for other sectors. The result gives a firstempirical evidence of the relevance of information (as an external resource) on trade. 14. Thalamopeduncular Tumors in Pediatric Age: Advanced Preoperative Imaging to Define Safe Surgical Planning: A Multicentric Experience.

Abstract

Background: Thalamopeduncular tumors are challenging lesions arising at the junction between the thalamus and the cerebral peduncle. They represent 1–5% of pediatric brain tumors, are mainly pilocytic astrocytoma and occur within the first two decades of life. To date, the optimal treatment remains unclear. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed pediatric patients who underwent surgery for thalamopeduncular tumors in the Academic Pediatric Neurosurgery Unit of Padova and Verona from 2005 to 2022. We collected information on age, sex, symptoms, preoperative and postoperative neuroradiological studies, histological specimens, surgical approaches, and follow-up. Results: We identified eight patients with a mean age of 9 years. All lesions were pilocytic astrocytoma. The main symptoms were spastic hemiparesis, cranial nerve palsy, headache, and ataxia. The corticospinal tract was studied in all patients using diffusion-tensor imaging brain MRI and in two patients using navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation. The transsylvian approach was the most frequently used. A gross total resection was achieved in two patients, a subtotal resection in five and a partial resection in one. In three patients, a second treatment was performed due to the regrowth of the tumor, performing an additional surgery in two cases and a second-look surgery followed by adjuvant therapy in one. After the surgery, four patients maintained stability in their postoperative neurological exam, two patients improved, and two worsened but in one of them, an improvement during recovery occurred. At the last follow-up available, three patients were disease-free, four had a stable tumor residual, and only one patient died from the progression of the disease. Conclusions: Advanced preoperative tools allow one to define a safe surgical strategy. Due to the indolent behavior of thalamopeduncular tumors, surgery should be encouraged. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as an invasive neuromodulation technique for the treatment of several neurological disorders, but the mechanisms underlying its effects remain partially elusive. In this context, the application of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in patients treated with DBS represents an intriguing approach to investigate the neurophysiology of cortico-basal networks. Experimental studies combining TMS and DBS that have been performed so far have mainly aimed to evaluate the effects of DBS on the cerebral cortex and thus to provide insights into DBS's mechanisms of action. The modulation of cortical excitability and plasticity by DBS is emerging as a potential contributor to its therapeutic effects. Moreover, pairing DBS and TMS stimuli could represent a method to induce cortical synaptic plasticity, the therapeutic potential of which is still unexplored. Furthermore, the advent of new DBS technologies and novel treatment targets will present new research opportunities and prospects to investigate brain networks. However, the application of the combined TMS-DBS approach is currently limited by safety concerns. In this review, we sought to present an overview of studies performed by combining TMS and DBS in neurological disorders, as well as available evidence and recommendations on the safety of their combination. Abstract

This essay examines the figure of the bankrupt debtor in the conception of Hevia Bolaños, which is considered the main vehicle of diffusion in the New World of the ius mercatorum elaborated in Europe. As a result of this analysis is found a sort of long lasting experience of the ius commune, which setting off from a profoundly unlawful valuation of bankrupt, had come to identify in modern times various types of bankrupt debtors (and therefore of bankruptcies), which has led to also admitting a faultless bankruptcy. Hevia is a punctual witness of this diversification, which is taken as a benchmark, more or less consciously, by the Spanish commercial legislations and especially Mexican legislation of the 19th century., El ensayo examina la figura de la quiebra en la reflexión de Hevia Bolaños, autor de referencia en materia de difusión en el Nuevo Mundo del ius mercatorum elaborado en Europa. De este análisis se deriva un estudio de la experiencia del derecho común, donde hay una valoración profundamente antijurídica de la quiebra, lo que ha dado lugar en la edad moderna a individualizar varias tipologías de deudores quebrados (y por tanto de quiebras), admitiendo así también la quiebra inculpable. De esta diversificación Hevia es un testigo puntual, cuyas reflexiones se retoman, más o menos de manera consciente, también de las legislaciones comerciales españolas y, especialmente, de las mexicanas del siglo xix.

Abstract

Patients affected by inborn errors of metabolism can develop catastrophic epilepsies ineligible for resective surgery. Few reports concerning vagal nerve stimulation in patients with epileptic encephalopathy in the context of metabolic diseases have been published in the literature. Drug-resistant epilepsies in metabolic disease could be a specific target for vagal nerve stimulation, although the efficacy of this technique in these patients still needs to be proved. The authors report our experience in treating refractory epilepsy with vagal nerve stimulation in 2 patients affected by inborn errors of metabolism. The first patient is a 23-year-old patient affected by glutaric aciduria type II, the other one is a 16-month-old child with nonketotic hyperglycinemia. Vagal nerve stimulation reduced seizures up to 50% in the first case and up to 90% in the second one.

Abstract

Introduction Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is effective for some neurological and psychiatric conditions. Idiopathic delayed-onset edema (IDE) surrounding the leads has been anecdotally reported. The etiology, predisposing factors and prognosis of this complication are unknown. We present a multicenter case series of patients with IDE, and a systematic literature review, aimed at defining the pathophysiology and identifying appropriate treatment strategies. Methods IDE was defined as edema along the DBS lead, occurring ≥72 h postoperatively, in absence of trauma, vascular events or infection. Information on patients with IDE was collected in a standardized way. A systematic search was performed in Pubmed. Results Twelve new patients presenting with 14 episodes of IDE are described. From the literature, 38 patients were identified. No common surgical aspects or patient-related factors were identified as risk predictors for the onset of IDE. Symptoms included deterioration of the stimulation effect, seizures and focal neurological signs. Although the condition is self-limiting, with symptoms resolution in 28.5 days on average, three patients underwent surgical revision and seven received antibiotics. Conclusions IDE is a rare complication of DBS procedures, presenting from few days to months after surgery. Symptoms can be mild and not-specific, and the condition is self-limiting. The diagnosis of IDE is made after exclusion of vascular events or infections. The pathophysiology is still unexplained. The recognition of this complication can help avoiding unnecessary surgical procedures (system explantation) and antibiotic treatment.
