Abstract

Neutron induced reactions on stable and unstable nuclei play a significant role in the nucleosynthesis of the elements in the cosmos. In the last years, several efforts have been made to investigate the possibility of applying the Trojan Horse Method (THM) to neutron induced reactions mostly by using deuteron as “TH-nucleus”. Here, the main advantages of using THM will be given together with a more focused discussion on the recent 7Be(n,α)4He and the 14N(n,p)14C reactions.

Abstract

The 10B+10B reactions are measured at beam energies of 50 and 72.2 MeV. The large spin of 10B nucleus (Jύ= 3+) makes this reaction particularly suitable to populate high spin states in the exit channels. Population and decay of different states in A≈10 mass region is studied, and the results are discussed from the structure point of view. In particular, a new state in 12C at Ex= 24.4 MeV is observed to be strongly populated in the triple α-particle coincidences.

Abstract

In the present paper it is described an analysis procedure suited for experiments where cross-sections strongly varying with energy are measured using beams having large energy dispersion. These cross-sections are typically the sub-barrier fusion excitation function of reactions induced by radioactive beams. The large beam energy dispersion, typical of these experiments, can lead to ambiguities in the association of the effective beam energy to the reaction product yields and consequently to an error in the determination of the excitation function. As a test case, the approach is applied to the experiments 6Li+120Sn and 7Li+119Sn measured in the energy range 14 MeV ≤ Ec.m. ≤28 MeV. The complete fusion cross sections are deduced from activation measurements using the stacked target technique. The results of these experiments, that employ the two weakly-bound stable Li isotopes, show that the complete fusion cross sections above the barrier are suppressed of about 70% and 85% with respect to the Universal Fusion Function, used as a standard reference, in the 6Li and 7Li induced reactions respectively. Moreover, the excitation functions of the two systems at energies below the barrier, do not show significant differences, despite the two systems have different n-transfer Qvalue.

Abstract

Double Sided Silicon Strip Detectors (DSSSDs) are segmented silicon detectors widely used for the detection of charged particles. When a particle hits the inter-strip gap between two adjacent strips, energy measurement can be affected by different effects reducing the efficiency of output signal generation. With the purpose to study this behaviour, an experiment was performed at the scanning proton micro-beam facility of the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI). Response of two detectors of thickness 75 and 998 µm is examined as a function of the beam impact position and bias voltage. Results show that the effective width of the inter-strip gap, which is linked to the efficiency for full energy detection, depends on the experimental conditions and detector settings.

Abstract

To explore a possible indirect method for $\rm ^8Be$ induced astrophysical reactions, the $\rm ^9Be=({}^8Be+\it n)$ cluster structure was studied via the Trojan Horse Method. It is the first time to study a super short life nucleus $\rm ^8Be$ via the Trojan Horse Method, and it is the first time to make a valid test for $l=1$ Trojan-horse nucleus. The $\rm ^9Be$ nucleus is assumed to have a ($\rm {}^8Be+\it n$) cluster structure and used as the Trojan-horse nucleus. The $\rm ^8Be$ nucleus acts as a participant, while the neutron is a spectator to the virtual $\rm ^8Be +{\it d}\rightarrow \alpha + {}^6Li$ reaction via a suitable 3-body reaction $\rm ^9Be +{\it d}\rightarrow \alpha + {}^6Li +\it n$. The experimental neutron momentum distribution inside $\rm ^9Be$ was reconstructed. The agreement between experimental and theoretical momentum distribution indicates that there should be a ($\rm {}^8Be+\it n$) cluster structure inside $\rm ^9Be$. Therefor the experimental study of $\rm ^8Be$ induced reactions, for example the experimental measurement of the $\rm ^8Be +\alpha \rightarrow {}^{12}C$ reaction proceeding through the Hoyle state, is possible.

Abstract

This paper presents values of complete fusion cross sections deduced from activation measurements for the reactions 6Li+120Sn and 7Li+119Sn, and for a projectile energy range from 17.5 to 28 MeV in the center-of-mass system. A new deconvolution analysis technique is used to link the basic activation data to the actual fusion excitation function. The complete fusion cross sections above the barrier are suppressed by about 70% and 85% with respect to the universal fusion function, used as a standard reference, in the 6Li and 7Li induced reactions, respectively. From a comparison of the excitation functions of the two systems at energies below the barrier, no significant differences can be observed, despite the two systems have different n-transfer Q values. This observation is supported by the results of coupled reaction channels (CRC) calculations.

14. Reaction studies with low-energy weakly-bound beams at INFN-LNS

Abstract

The reaction dynamics of collisions involving halo or weakly bound nuclei, at energies around the Coulomb barrier, can be strongly affected by the structure of such nuclei. Very strong entrance channel effects have been observed on various reaction pocess such as, elastic scattering, fusion and direct reactions when comparing collision induced by the 6He and 11Be halo nuclei with the ones induced by their cores 4He and 10Be. Collisions induced by the stable weakly bound nuclei 6Li, 7Li show also some peculiarities in comparison to the ones induced by well bound nuclei; coupling with the break-up channel is in fact very important in reproducing low energy data. In this contribution an overview of our present understanding of the discussed topic will be given along with the discussion of some new preliminary results.

Abstract

The experimental elastic scattering angular distributions for the weakly bound nuclei 6,7Li and for the halo nucleus 6He on the same 64Zn target at several energies around the Coulomb barrier were measured at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS, Italy) and at the Cyclotron Research Center, Louvain La Neuve (Belgium), respectively. The measured elastic scattering angular distributions of these three systems at the same center of mass energy have been compared. The experimental data of the 6,7Li+ 64Zn systems have been analyzed within the CDCC method, while the 6He+64Zn data have been compared with both both CDCC and CRC calculations.

Abstract

The scattering processes of two mirror projectiles, the well bound 17 O (Sn = 4.143 MeV) and the loosely bound radioactive 17 F (Sp = 0.600 MeV), on the proton closed shell target 58 Ni were measured at several energies around the Coulomb barrier. The experimental data were analyzed within the framework of the optical model to extract the reaction cross section and to investigate the role played by direct reaction channels at near-barrier energies. The comparison shows a similar behaviour for the two A = 17 projectiles despite their very different binding energies and suggests a rather small effect of the 17 F breakup channel on the reaction dynamics.

Abstract

The study of fusion in collision around the Coulomb barrier, induced by radioactive or stable weakly bound nuclei, has been the subject of many experiments in the last years. From a semiclassical point of view, direct processes like break-up or transfer may be favoured by the low binding energies and one might also expect suppressed fusion cross section due to the competition with the break-up. However, according to the Coupled Channel calculations (CC), it is well known that the presence of strong open reaction channels can be responsible for a fusion cross-section enhancement with respect to the single barrier penetration calculations and the break-up should be included in such calculations. In order to further investigate on this topic, the 6Li+64Zn collision has been studied at several energies around the Coulomb barrier, to extract the total fusion and the total reaction cross sections and to study the energy dependence of the optical model potential.

Abstract

The reaction dynamics induced by the 17F Radioactive Ion Beam on the proton-shell closed 58Ni target was studied at two colliding energies slightly above the Coulomb barrier. Charged reaction products were detected at forward angles and the quasi-elastic differential cross section was analyzed within the framework of the optical model in order to extract the reaction cross section and to investigate the relevance of direct reaction channels (inelastic scattering, breakup and transfer) at near-barrier energies. The comparison with the reaction induced by double-magic tightly-bound 16O projectiles on the same target showed that the 17F reaction cross section is moderately enhanced at the lower secondary beam energy. Direct reaction channels were also found to be more relevant than for the corresponding 16O-induced reaction.

Abstract

Charged reaction products originated from the interaction of the loosely bound radioactive ion beam (17)F (S(p) = 600 keV) with the proton-shell closed (58)Ni target were measured at two colliding energies slightly above the Coulomb barrier. The collected data were analyzed within the framework of the optical model to deduce the reaction cross section and to investigate the role played by inelastic excitations, transfer channels, and the breakup process (17)F --> (16)O + p at near-barrier energies. The reaction cross section at the lower (17)F energy showed a moderate enhancement (similar to 20%) with respect to that of the system (16)O + (58)Ni. At this energy direct reaction channels were also found to be more relevant than those for the reaction induced from the tightly bound projectile (16)O on the same target. Both features could be strongly related to the very low binding energy of the (17)F valence proton. Physical Review C

Abstract

Elastic scattering angular distributions for the 6Li+64Zn system were measured at eight beam energies from below to above the Coulomb barrier, 12.0 E 22.0 MeV. The experimental data were analyzed within the optical model in order to study the energy dependence of the interaction potential and to obtain total reaction cross sections. The results obtained using several optical model potentials show similar behavior. The energy dependence of the strengths of the real and imaginary potentials suggests the presence of the breakup threshold anomaly. It is shown that the extracted energy dependence of the interaction potential at sub-barrier energies is very sensitive to possible experimental errors.

Abstract

The excitation of ^32S to energies from 24 to 37 MeV followed by its decay to 28Si has been brought about by the two-step alpha transfer reaction 28Si(6Li, d)32S*-->alpha + ^28Si. A sudden perishing of the decay to the 28Si ground state occurs at 31 MeV of excitation. At about the same energy an increase in the decay to the first excited 2+ state is observed. The yields of 28Si in its ground state or excited to the 2+ and 4+ state prohibit strong fluctuations. This supports the assumption of the existence of states at high excitation in ^32S. The results are based on d– alpha coincidences, which were found to exhibit a strong forward– backward correlation.
