Pain is a common symptom in endodontic conditions, but differential diagnostic procedures are often needed to exclude other pain origins. General dentists and endodontists thus need to be aware of alternative painful orofacial conditions, and be able to identify them. The new International Classification of Orofacial Pain (ICOP, 2020) is the first comprehensive classification that uniquely deals with orofacial pain. The ICOP is a hierarchical classification, modelled on the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) and covers pain in dentoalveolar and anatomically related tissues, muscle pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, neuropathic pain affecting cranial nerves, pain resembling primary headaches, and idiopathic pain in the orofacial region. A description of each condition is given, and structured diagnostic criteria for each condition are proposed based on research data when available. This narrative review aims to (i) give an overview and brief explanation of the ICOP system, (ii) describe and give examples of how it can be of use to general dentists and endodontists with special attention to differential diagnosis of tooth pain, and (iii) highlight how endodontic research can contribute to validation and improvement of the classification. A comparison to other classification and diagnostic systems is also included.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding can identify terrestrial taxa utilising aquatic habitats alongside aquatic communities, but terrestrial species' eDNA dynamics are understudied. We evaluated eDNA metabarcoding for monitoring semi-aquatic and terrestrial mammals, specifically nine species of conservation or management concern, and examined spatiotemporal variation in mammal eDNA signals. We hypothesised eDNA signals would be stronger for semi-aquatic than terrestrial mammals, and at sites where individuals exhibited behaviours. In captivity, we sampled waterbodies at points where behaviours were observed (‘directed’ sampling) and at equidistant intervals along the shoreline (‘stratified’ sampling). We surveyed natural ponds (N = 6) where focal species were present using stratified water sampling, camera traps, and field signs. eDNA samples were metabarcoded using vertebrate-specific primers. All focal species were detected in captivity. eDNA signal strength did not differ between directed and stratified samples across or within species, between semi-aquatic or terrestrial species, or according to behaviours. eDNA was evenly distributed in artificial waterbodies, but unevenly distributed in natural ponds. Survey methods deployed at natural ponds shared three species detections. Metabarcoding missed badger and red fox recorded by cameras and field signs, but detected small mammals these tools overlooked, e.g. water vole. Terrestrial mammal eDNA signals were weaker and detected less frequently than semi-aquatic mammal eDNA signals. eDNA metabarcoding could enhance mammal monitoring through large-scale, multi-species distribution assessment for priority and difficult to survey species, and provide early indication of range expansions or contractions. However, eDNA surveys need high spatiotemporal resolution and metabarcoding biases require further investigation before routine implementation.

1. Freshwaters are among the most globally threatened habitats and their biodiversity is declining at an unparalleled rate. In an attempt to slow this decline, multiple approaches have been used to conserve, restore or enhance waterbodies. However, evaluating their effectiveness is time‐consuming and expensive. Identifying species or assemblages across a range of ecological conditions that can provide a surrogate for wider freshwater biodiversity is therefore of significant value for conservation management and planning. 2. For lakes and ponds in three contrasting landscapes of Britain (lowland agricultural,eastern England; upland, north‐west England; urban, central Scotland) we examined the link between macrophyte species, macrophyte morpho‐group diversity(an indicator of structural diversity) and the richness of three widespread aquatic macroinvertebrate groups (molluscs, beetles, and odonates) using structural equation modelling. We hypothesised that increased macrophyte richness and, hence, increased vegetation structural complexity, would increase macroinvertebrate richness after accounting for local and landscape conditions. 3. We found that macrophyte richness, via macrophyte morpho‐group diversity, was an effective surrogate for mollusc, beetle, and odonate richness in ponds after accounting for variation caused by physical variables, water chemistry, and surrounding land use. However, only mollusc richness could be predicted by macrophyte morpho‐group diversity in lakes, with no significant predicted effect on beetles or odonates. 4. Our results indicate that macrophyte morpho‐group diversity can be viewed as a suitable surrogate of macroinvertebrate biodiversity across diverse landscapes, particularly in ponds and to a lesser extent in lakes. This has important implications for the restoration, conservation, and creation of standing water habitats and for assessing their effectiveness in addressing the decline of global freshwater biodiversity. A major shortcoming that prevented present-day organic substrates and interposers from achieving high VOs at fine pitch and dimensional stability are thermal expansion mismatches between material layers and requirement of low dielectric constant to improve signal transmission. Low-stress materials with ultra-low dielectric coefficient can be used to improve signal transmission and to relieve stresses in circuits on silicon, glass and polymeric substrates. The electrical performance of metallic circuits on newly developed porous materials is investigated in this study. Experimental results showed that the impedance performance of circuit is significantly improved with the new material. Mechanical testing showed that the elastic modulus of the new material is only 1/5 of the conventional polymer, and stresses can be relieved using the by the low elastic modulus, ultralow dielectric material.

Free-living coralline algae lay down growth bands formed by areas of more and less calcified cells which, in certain species, are associated with winter and summer growth respectively. Band width and cell calcification of Lithothamnion glaciale from Scotland were compared to annual and seasonal cloud cover and sea surface temperature (SST). There was a negative relationship between summer calcification (the degree of cellular carbonate infilling) and winter cloud cover. Annual and summer SST were also negatively related to summer calcification. This indicates that summer calcification may be affected by the previous winter's cloud cover and that summer's/year's SST. No relationships between band width and cloud cover were observed. A cloud cover hindcast using summer calcification and SST indicated a modest rise in cloud cover trends from 1910 to 2006 and a 12 (mean) year cyclicity in cloud cover, however, the latter may be associated with other site-specific factors. This study demonstrates the utility of densitometric algochronology in understanding marine temperature and cloud cover histories.

Many marine and terrestrial organisms lay down regular growth bands. In some species (e.g., trees), control of growth band geometry is related to environmental conditions. Coralline algae are long-lived marine plants with a global distribution that lay down regular calcitic growth bands composed of more- and less-extensively calcified cells. Little is known about environmental and organism controls on their growth. In this investigation, coralline algae (Lithothamnion glaciale Kjellm.) were grown at 8, 11, and 15 degrees C, and temperature controls on algal growth were considered. Calcite density within less-extensively calcified cells in L. glaciale was negatively correlated to summer temperature. No relationships were observed between temperature and calcite density in more-extensively calcified cells or growth-band width itself. Additionally, temperature controls on growth in three L. glaciale thalli over the last 50 years were considered. Temperature was negatively related to calcite density in more- and less-extensively calcified cells but showed no consistent relationship with band width.
