In this paper, combined with the degradation and monotonicity of parameters of Hamacher operation and the advantages of the correlation between input parameters of Heronian operators, IVq-ROFHHMWA and IVq-ROFHHMGA operators, which are the fusion of Hamacher and Heronian, are proposed, and their properties are studied. Finally, a group decision-making method based on IVq-ROFHHMWA operator is proposed. The implementation and comparative analysis results show that the operator and group decision-making methods proposed in this paper are effective and feasible.

Time-dependent convection-diffusion problems is considered, particularly when the diffusivity is very small and sharp layers exist in the solutions. Nonphysical oscillations may occur in the numerical solutions when using regular mesh with standard computational methods. In this work, we develop a moving mesh SUPG (MM-SUPG) method, which integrates the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method with the moving mesh partial differential equation (MMPDE) approach. The proposed method is designed to handle both isotropic and anisotropic diffusivity tensors. For the isotropic case, we focus on improving the stability of the numerical solution by utilizing both artificial diffusion from SUPG and mesh adaptation from MMPDE. And for the anisotropic case, we focus on the positivity of the numerical solution. We introduce a weighted diffusion tensor and develop a new metric tensor to control the mesh movement. We also develop conditions for time step size so that the numerical solution satisfies the discrete maximum principle (DMP). Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed MM-SUPG method provides results better than SUPG with fixed mesh or moving mesh without SUPG., Comment: There are 31 pages, 14 figures, and 6 tables

Compressed sensing (CS) has become a popular field in the last two decades to represent and reconstruct a sparse signal with much fewer samples than the signal itself. Although regular images are not sparse on their own, many can be sparsely represented in wavelet transform domain. Therefore, CS has also been widely applied to represent digital images. However, an alternative approach, adaptive sampling such as mesh-based image representation (MbIR), has not attracted as much attention. MbIR works directly on image pixels and represents the image with fewer points using a triangular mesh. In this paper, we perform a preliminary comparison between the CS and a recently developed MbIR method, AMA representation. The results demonstrate that, at the same sample density, AMA representation can provide better reconstruction quality than CS based on the tested algorithms. As the resolution of digital images increase significantly, the processing of images becomes more challenging in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, we consider image segmentation by solving a partial differentiation equation (PDE) model based on the Mumford-Shah functional. We develop a new algorithm by combining anisotropic mesh adaptation for image representation and finite element method for solving the PDE model. Comparing to traditional algorithms solved by finite difference method, our algorithm provides faster and better results without the need to resizing the images to lower quality. In the phase-field modeling of brittle fracture, anisotropic constitutive assumptions for the degradation of stored elastic energy due to fracture are crucial to preventing cracking in compression and obtaining physically sound numerical solutions. Three energy decomposition models, the spectral decomposition, the volumetric-deviatoric split, and an improved volumetric-deviatoric split, and their effects on the performance of the phase-field modeling are studied. Meanwhile, anisotropic degradation of stiffness may lead to a small energy remaining on crack surfaces, which violates crack boundary conditions and can cause unphysical crack openings and propagation. A simple yet effective treatment for this is proposed: define a critically damaged zone with a threshold parameter and then degrade both the active and passive energies in the zone. A dynamic mesh adaptation finite element method is employed for the numerical solution of the corresponding elasticity system. Four examples, including two benchmark ones, one with complex crack systems, and one based on an experimental setting, are considered. Numerical results show that the spectral decomposition and improved volumetric-deviatoric split models, together with the improvement treatment of crack boundary conditions, can lead to crack propagation results that are comparable with the existing computational and experimental results. It is also shown that the numerical results are not very sensitive to the parameter defining the critically damaged zone., Comment: 38 pages

Anisotropic Porous Medium Equation (APME) is developed as an extension of the Porous Medium Equation (PME) for anisotropic porous media. A special analytical solution is derived for APME for time-independent diffusion. Anisotropic mesh adaptation for linear finite element solution of APME is discussed and numerical results for two dimensional examples are presented. A moving mesh finite element method is studied for the numerical solution of a phase-field model for brittle fracture. The moving mesh partial differential equation approach is employed to dynamically track crack propagation. Meanwhile, the decomposition of the strain tensor into tensile and compressive components is essential for the success of the phase-field modeling of brittle fracture but results in a non-smooth elastic energy and stronger nonlinearity in the governing equation. This makes the governing equation much more difficult to solve and, in particular, Newton's iteration often to fail to converge. Three regularization methods are proposed to smooth out the decomposition of the strain tensor. Numerical examples of fracture propagation under quasi-static load demonstrate that all of the methods can effectively improve the convergence of Newton's iteration for relatively small values of the regularization parameter but without comprising the accuracy of the numerical solution. They also show that the moving mesh finite element method is able to adaptively concentrate the mesh elements around propagating cracks and handle multiple and complex crack systems., Comment: 32 pages

Preservation of nonnengativity and boundedness in the finite element solution of Nagumo-type equations with general anisotropic diffusion is studied. Linear finite elements and the backward Euler scheme are used for the spatial and temporal discretization, respectively. An explicit, an implicit, and two hybrid explicit-implicit treatments for the nonlinear reaction term are considered. Conditions for the mesh and the time step size are developed for the numerical solution to preserve nonnegativity and boundedness. The effects of lumping of the mass matrix and the reaction term are also discussed. The analysis shows that the nonlinear reaction term has significant effects on the conditions for both the mesh and the time step size. Anisotropic mesh adaptation is studied for linear finite element solution of 3D anisotropic diffusion problems. The M-uniform mesh approach is used, where an anisotropic adaptive mesh is generated as a uniform one in the metric specified by a tensor. In addition to mesh adaptation, preservation of the maximum principle is also studied. Some new sufficient conditions for maximum principle preservation are developed, and a mesh quality measure is defined to server as a good indicator. Four different metric tensors are investigated: one is the identity matrix, one focuses on minimizing an error bound, another one on preservation of the maximum principle, while the fourth combines both. Numerical examples show that these metric tensors serve their purposes. Particularly, the fourth leads to meshes that improve the satisfaction of the maximum principle by the finite element solution while concentrating elements in regions where the error is large. Application of the anisotropic mesh adaptation to fractured reservoir simulation in petroleum engineering is also investigated, where unphysical solutions can occur and mesh adaptation can help improving the satisfaction of the maximum principle., Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures

Triangular meshes have gained much interest in image representation and have been widely used in image processing. This paper introduces a framework of anisotropic mesh adaptation (AMA) methods to image representation and proposes a GPRAMA method that is based on AMA and greedy-point removal (GPR) scheme. Different than many other methods that triangulate sample points to form the mesh, the AMA methods start directly with a triangular mesh and then adapt the mesh based on a user-defined metric tensor to represent the image. The AMA methods have clear mathematical framework and provides flexibility for both image representation and image reconstruction. A mesh patching technique is developed for the implementation of the GPRAMA method, which leads to an improved version of the popular GPRFS-ED method. The GPRAMA method can achieve better quality than the GPRFS-ED method but with lower computational cost., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures

Preservation of the maximum principle is studied for the combination of the linear finite element method in space and the $\theta$-method in time for solving time dependent anisotropic diffusion problems. It is shown that the numerical solution satisfies a discrete maximum principle when all element angles of the mesh measured in the metric specified by the inverse of the diffusion matrix are non-obtuse and the time step size is bounded below and above by bounds proportional essentially to the square of the maximal element diameter. The lower bound requirement can be removed when a lumped mass matrix is used. In two dimensions, the mesh and time step conditions can be replaced by weaker Delaunay-type conditions. Anisotropic mesh adaptation has been successfully applied to the numerical solution of partial differential equations but little considered for variational problems. In this paper, we investigate the use of a global hierarchical basis error estimator for the development of an anisotropic metric tensor needed for the adaptive finite element solution of variational problems. The new metric tensor is completely a~posteriori and based on residual, edge jumps and the hierarchical basis error estimator. Numerical results show that it performs comparable with existing metric tensors based on Hessian recovery. A few sweeps of the symmetric Gau{\ss}-Seidel iteration for solving the global error problem prove sufficient to provide directional information necessary for successful mesh adaptation. ., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Heterogeneous anisotropic diffusion problems arise in the various areas of science and engineering including plasma physics, petroleum engineering, and image processing. Standard numerical methods can produce spurious oscillations when they are used to solve those problems. A common approach to avoid this difficulty is to design a proper numerical scheme and/or a proper mesh so that the numerical solution validates the discrete counterpart (DMP) of the maximum principle satisfied by the continuous solution. A well known mesh condition for the DMP satisfaction by the linear finite element solution of isotropic diffusion problems is the non-obtuse angle condition that requires the dihedral angles of mesh elements to be non-obtuse. In this paper, a generalization of the condition, the so-called anisotropic non-obtuse angle condition, is developed for the finite element solution of heterogeneous anisotropic diffusion problems. The new condition is essentially the same as the existing one except that the dihedral angles are now measured in a metric depending on the diffusion matrix of the underlying problem. Several variants of the new condition are obtained. Based on one of them, two metric tensors for use in anisotropic mesh generation are developed to account for DMP satisfaction and the combination of DMP satisfaction and mesh adaptivity.
