Abstract

Abstract A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Abstract

The Iseult project is a French-German initiative focused on very high magnetic-field molecular imaging. The project includes a Whole Body 11.7 T MRI magnet installed at Neurospin, a neuroscience research center operating at CEA Saclay since November 2006. After 7 years of fabrication at Belfort by GE Power (Ex Alstom), the Iseult magnet was delivered to CEA in June 2017, its connection with the cryoplant and all the ancillary equipment was completed in October 2018. After 4 months of cooldown and another 4 months of tests, the Iseult magnet reached its nominal field of 11.72 T without any quench for the first time, on July 18th. This paper deals with the magnet connection at Neurospin with the cryoplant and with the electrical and control systems. Finally, the paper will present the magnet commissioning data, from the cooling phase to the step-by-step energization up to the nominal current.

Abstract

In the framework of the French-German project Iseult, we chose to design the 4.5 K vapor cooled current leads of the 11.75 T MRI magnet using a burn-proof approach, i.e., they are able to withstand a 3-h current slow dump without any active cooling. This constraint led us to select brass instead of pure copper, resulting in higher mass and thus in higher thermal stability. The drawback is a slightly higher cryogenic consumption. We present here the design studies of those current leads and compare their theoretical characteristics with the experimental results obtained during the test campaigns at CEA-Saclay.

Abstract

The Iseult/Inumac project is a French–German initiative focused on very high magnetic-field molecular imaging. That project includes a Whole Body 11.7 T MRI magnet that will equip Neurospin, a neuroscience research center operating at CEA Saclay since November 2006. After seven years of activities, the fabrication has been successfully completed in Belfort by GE Power. The Iseult magnet was delivered to CEA in May 2017 and the final commissioning has started. This paper deals with the last manufacturing steps and the final factory tests. An overall status of the commissioning and tests of the ancillary equipment at the site is also presented, as well as a brief summary of the next steps to reach the nominal field of 11.75 T.

Abstract

International audience; The Super conducting FRagment Separator (Super-FRS) is a part of Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research, a new international accelerator facility for the research with antiprotons and ions to be built in Darmstadt, Germany. The Super-FRS includes 24 super ferric H-type dipole magnets with trapezoidal structure and large aperture, deflection radius of 12.5 m, magnetic field of up to 1.6 T, and effective length of more than 2 m for bending ion beams (with a rigidity from 2 to 20 Tm). Two Nb-Ti coils will be located inside the cryostat in order to be cooled with liquid He, but the yoke will remain at room temperature (RT). A chamfered-pole was designed to meet the required field homogeneity. This paper reports on the status of such a dipole.

Abstract

Recent progresses in Bi2212 wires have proved its suitability for round wire developments and high field magnet development. High energy storage magnets can be foreseen leading to cable developments. In order to prepare such work CEA Saclay has developed in collaboration with the Nexans company a Bi 2212 wire having 18 sub-elements. The round wire has been twisted to study losses and twisting degradation. The results are presented here and compared to losses measurements made on already existing ribbons.

Abstract

IRFU/SACM at CEA/Saclay has undertaken an R&D program on Nb3Sn aimed at designing, building and testing a 1-m-long, 56-mm-single-aperture quadrupole magnet model. Model design is based on the design of LHC arc quadrupole magnets, without iron yoke. It is expected to reach a nominal field gradient of 211 T/m at 11,870 A. The main goal of the program is to learn about Nb3Sn technology and evaluate fabrication techniques relative to the use of this superconductor. Coils are manufactured by the so called ldquowind, react and impregnaterdquo technique. Laminated, austenitic steel collars are locked around the coil assembly by means of keys in order to restrain Lorentz forces. Coil manufacturing and magnet assembly have been achieved in 2007. Cold mass assembly is under work. Warm field measurements are carried out at each step of magnet and cold mass assembly. After a brief recall of the conceptual design, the paper reviews the manufacturing of the coils and of the magnet assembly and presents the results of warm magnetic field measurements.

Abstract

Abstract

Recent progresses in Bi2212 wires have proved its suitability for high field magnet development. Using the volume of the VAMAS sample CEA Saclay has developed a small double pancake sample for Bi2212 ribbon testing. This sample allows testing up to 6 meters of superconducting ribbon using a react and wind technique, the reaction being done on a provisional reaction mandrel. The manufacturing technique of this sample is presented as well as the results of the critical current measurement. These results are compared with results measured on conventional VAMAS samples and with resistive transition laws previously published.
