Fusing small resource states into a larger, fully connected graph-state is essential for scalable photonic quantum computing. Theoretical analysis reveals that this can only be achieved when the success probability of the fusion gate surpasses a specific percolation threshold of 58.98% by using three-photon GHZ states as resource states. However, such an implementation of a fusion gate has never been experimentally realized before. Here, we successfully demonstrate a boosted fusion gate with a theoretical success probability of 75%, using deterministically generated auxiliary states. The success probability is experimentally measured to be 71.0(7)%. We further demonstrate the effectiveness of the boosted fusion gate by fusing two Bell states with a fidelity of 67(2)%. The emergence of quantum mechanics and general relativity has transformed our understanding of the natural world significantly. However, integrating these two theories presents immense challenges, and their interplay remains untested. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the single-photon interference covering huge space can effectively probe the interface between quantum mechanics and general relativity. We developed an alternative design using unbalanced Michelson interferometers to address this and validated its feasibility over an 8.4 km free-space channel. Using a high-brightness single-photon source based on quantum dots, we demonstrated single-photon interference along this long-distance baseline. We achieved a phase measurement precision of 16.2 mrad, which satisfied the measurement requirements for a gravitational redshift at the geosynchronous orbit by five times the standard deviation. The functionality of an entity frequently necessitates the support of a group situated in another layer of the system. To unravel the profound impact of such group support on a system's resilience against cascading failures, we devise a framework comprising a double-layer interdependent hypergraph system, wherein nodes are capable of receiving support via hyperedges. Our central hypothesis posits that the failure may transcend to another layer when all support groups of each dependent node fail, thereby initiating a potentially iterative cascade across layers. Through rigorous analytical methods, we derive the critical threshold for the initial node survival probability that marks the second-order phase transition point. A salient discovery is that as the prevalence of dependent nodes escalates, the system dynamics shift from a second-order to a first-order phase transition. Notably, irrespective of the collapse pattern, systems characterized by scale-free hyperdegree distributions within both hypergraph layers consistently demonstrate superior robustness compared to those adhering to Poisson hyperdegree distributions. In summary, our research underscores the paramount significance of group support mechanisms and intricate network topologies in determining the resilience of interconnected systems against the propagation of cascading failures. Single-photon sources are essential for quantum networks, enabling applications ranging from quantum key distribution (QKD) to the burgeoning quantum internet. Despite the remarkable advancements, the current reliance of QKD on attenuated coherent (laser) light sources has imposed a fundamental limit on the secret key rate (SKR). This constraint is primarily attributable to the scarcity of single-photon components within coherent light, confined by an inherent upper bound of 1/e. Here, we report high-rate QKD using a high-efficiency single-photon source, enabling an SKR transcending the fundamental rate limit of coherent light. We developed an on-demand, bright semiconductor quantum-dot single-photon source with an efficiency of 0.71(2), exceeding the inherent bound of coherent light by approximately 2.87 dB. Implementing narrow-bandwidth filtering and random polarization modulation, we conducted a field QKD trial over a 14.6(1.1)-dB-loss free-space urban channel, achieving an SKR of 0.00108 bits per pulse. This surpasses the practical limit of coherent-light-based QKD by 2.53 dB. This study introduces a comprehensive framework that situates information cascades within the domain of higher-order interactions, utilizing a double-threshold hypergraph model. We propose that individuals (nodes) gain awareness of information through each communication channel (hyperedge) once the number of information adopters surpasses a threshold $\phi_m$. However, actual adoption of the information only occurs when the cumulative influence across all communication channels exceeds a second threshold, $\phi_k$. We analytically derive the cascade condition for both the case of a single seed node using percolation methods and the case of any seed size employing mean-field approximation. Our findings underscore that when considering the fractional seed size, $r_0 \in (0,1]$, the connectivity pattern of the random hypergraph, characterized by the hyperdegree, $k$, and cardinality, $m$, distributions, exerts an asymmetric impact on the global cascade boundary. This asymmetry manifests in the observed differences in the boundaries of the global cascade within the $(\phi_m, \langle m \rangle)$ and $(\phi_k, \langle k \rangle)$ planes. However, as $r_0 \to 0$, this asymmetric effect gradually diminishes. Photon loss is the biggest enemy for scalable photonic quantum information processing. This problem can be tackled by using quantum error correction, provided that the overall photon loss is below a threshold of 1/3. However, all reported on-demand and indistinguishable single-photon sources still fall short of this threshold. Here, by using tailor shaped laser pulse excitation on a high-quantum efficiency single quantum dot deterministically coupled to a tunable open microcavity, we demonstrate a high-performance source with a single-photon purity of 0.9795(6), photon indistinguishability of 0.986(16), and an overall system efficiency of 0.717(20), simultaneously. This source for the first time reaches the efficiency threshold for scalable photonic quantum computing. With this source, we further demonstrate 1.87(13) dB intensity squeezing, and consecutive 40-photon events with 1.67 mHz count rate.

Berry curvature is a fundamental element to characterize topological quantum physics, while a full measurement of Berry curvature in momentum space was not reported for topological states. Here we achieve two-dimensional Berry curvature reconstruction in a photonic quantum anomalous Hall system via Hall transport measurement of a momentum-resolved wave packet. Integrating measured Berry curvature over the two-dimensional Brillouin zone, we obtain Chern numbers corresponding to -1 and 0. Further, we identify bulk-boundary correspondence by measuring topology-linked chiral edge states at the boundary. The full topological characterization of photonic Chern bands from Berry curvature, Chern number, and edge transport measurements enables our photonic system to serve as a versatile platform for further in-depth study of novel topological physics.

The construction of a large-scale quantum internet requires quantum repeaters containing multiple entangled photon sources with identical wavelengths. Semiconductor quantum dots can generate entangled photon pairs deterministically with high fidelity. However, realizing wavelength-matched quantum-dot entangled photon sources faces two difficulties: the non-uniformity of emission wavelength and exciton fine-structure splitting induced fidelity reduction. Typically, these two factors are not independently tunable, making it challenging to achieve simultaneous improvement. In this work, we demonstrate wavelength-tunable entangled photon sources based on droplet-etched GaAs quantum dots through the combined use of AC and quantum-confined Stark effects. The emission wavelength can be tuned by ~1 meV while preserving an entanglement fidelity f exceeding 0.955(1) in the entire tuning range. Based on this hybrid tuning scheme, we finally demonstrate multiple wavelength-matched entangled photon sources with f>0.919(3), paving a way towards robust and scalable on-demand entangled photon sources for quantum internet and integrated quantum optical circuits., Comment: Main text: 11 pages, 6 figures, Supplementary information: 7 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Quantum non-Gaussianity, a more potent and highly useful form of nonclassicality, excludes all convex mixtures of Gaussian states and Gaussian parametric processes generating them. Here, for the first time, we conclusively test quantum non-Gaussian coincidences of entangled photon pairs with the CHSH-Bell factor $S=2.328\pm0.004$ from a single quantum dot with a depth up to $0.94\pm 0.02$ dB. Such deterministically generated photon pairs fundamentally overcome parametric processes by reducing crucial multiphoton errors. For the quantum non-Gaussian depth of the unheralded (heralded) single-photon state, we achieve the value of $8.08\pm0.05$ dB ($19.06\pm0.29$ dB). Our work experimentally certifies the exclusive quantum non-Gaussianity properties highly relevant for optical sensing, communication and computation.

In the quest to build general-purpose photonic quantum computers, fusion-based quantum computation has risen to prominence as a promising strategy. This model allows a ballistic construction of large cluster states which are universal for quantum computation, in a scalable and loss-tolerant way without feed-forward, by fusing many small n-photon entangled resource states. However, a key obstacle to this architecture lies in efficiently generating the required essential resource states on photonic chips. One such critical seed state that has not yet been achieved is the heralded three-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (3-GHZ) state. Here, we address this elementary resource gap, by reporting the first experimental realization of a heralded dual-rail encoded 3-GHZ state. Our implementation employs a low-loss and fully programmable photonic chip that manipulates six indistinguishable single photons of wavelengths in the telecommunication regime. Conditional on the heralding detection, we obtain the desired 3-GHZ state with a fidelity 0.573+-0.024. In many cases of attacks or failures, memory effects play a significant role. Therefore, we present a model that not only considers the dependencies between nodes but also incorporates the memory effects of attacks. Our research demonstrates that the survival probability of a random node reached by a random edge surpasses the inverse of the average degree ($1/{\langle k \rangle}$), and a giant component emerges regardless of the strength of dependencies. Moreover, if the dependency strength exceeds $1/{\langle k \rangle}$, the network experiences an abrupt collapse when an infinitesimally small fraction of nodes is removed, irrespective of the memory effect. Our proposed model provides insights into the interplay between dependencies between nodes, memory effects, and the network structures under attacks or failures. Social networks have provided a platform for the effective exchange of ideas or opinions but also served as a hotbed of polarization. While much research attempts to explore different causes of opinion polarization, the effect of perception bias caused by the network structure itself is largely understudied. To this end, we propose a threshold model that simulates the evolution of opinions by taking into account the perception bias, which is the gap between global information and locally available information from the neighborhood within networks. Our findings suggest that polarization occurs when the collective stubbornness of the population exceeds a critical value which is largely affected by the perception bias. In addition, as the level of stubbornness grows, the occurrence of first-order and second-order phase transitions between consensus and polarization becomes more prevalent, and the types of these phase transitions rely on the initial proportion of active opinions. Notably, for regular network structures, a step-wise pattern emerges that corresponds to various levels of polarization and is strongly associated with the formation of echo chambers. Our research presents a valuable framework for investigating the connection between perception bias and opinion polarization and provides valuable insights for mitigating polarization in the context of biased information.

Semiconductor quantum dots, as promising solid-state platform, have exhibited deterministic photon pair generation with high polarization entanglement f\textcompwordmark idelity for quantum information applications. However, due to temporal correlation from inherently cascaded emission, photon indistinguishability is limited, which restricts their potential scalability to multi-photon experiments. Here, by utilizing quantum interferences to decouple polarization entanglement from temporal correlation, we improve multi-photon entanglement f\textcompwordmark idelity from $(58.7\pm 2.2)\%$ to $(75.5\pm 2.0)\%$. Our work paves the way to realize scalable and high-quality multi-photon states from quantum dots.

The arise of disagreement is an emergent phenomenon that can be observed within a growing social group and, beyond a certain threshold, can lead to group fragmentation. To better understand how disagreement emerges, we introduce an analytically tractable model of group formation where individuals have multidimensional binary opinions and the group grows through a noisy homophily principle, i.e., like-minded individuals attract each other with exceptions occurring with some small probability. Assuming that the level of disagreement is correlated with the number of different opinions coexisting within the group, we find analytically and numerically that in growing groups disagreement emerges spontaneously regardless of how small the noise in the system is. We propose a new method to directly measure a general multi-particle quantum wave function, a single matrix element in a multi-particle density matrix, by quantum teleportation. The density matrix element is embedded in a virtual logical qubit and is nondestructively teleported to a single physical qubit for readout. We experimentally implement this method to directly measure the wavefunction of a photonic mixed quantum state beyond a single photon using a single observable for the first time. The cohesion of a social group is the group's tendency to remain united. It has important implications for the stability and survival of social organizations, such as political parties, research teams, or online groups. Empirical studies suggest that cohesion is affected by both the admission process of new members and the group size. Yet, a theoretical understanding of their interplay is still lacking. To this end, we propose a model where a group grows by a noisy admission process of new members who can be of two different types. Cohesion is defined in this framework as the fraction of members of the same type and the noise in the admission process represents the level of randomness in the evaluation of new candidates. The model can reproduce the empirically reported decrease of cohesion with the group size. When the admission of new candidates involves the decision of only one group member, the group growth causes a loss of cohesion even for infinitesimal levels of noise. However, when admissions require a consensus of several group members, there is a critical noise level below which the growing group remains cohesive. The nature of the transition between the cohesive and non-cohesive phases depends on the model parameters and forms a rich structure reminiscent of critical phenomena in ferromagnetic materials., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

In the quest to realize a scalable quantum network, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) offer distinct advantages including high single-photon efficiency and indistinguishability, high repetition rate (tens of GHz with Purcell enhancement), interconnectivity with spin qubits, and a scalable on-chip platform. However, in the past two decades, the visibility of quantum interference between independent QDs rarely went beyond the classical limit of 50$\%$ and the distances were limited from a few meters to kilometers. Here, we report quantum interference between two single photons from independent QDs separated by 302 km optical fiber. The single photons are generated from resonantly driven single QDs deterministically coupled to microcavities. Quantum frequency conversions are used to eliminate the QD inhomogeneity and shift the emission wavelength to the telecommunication band. The observed interference visibility is 0.67$\pm$0.02 (0.93$\pm$0.04) without (with) temporal filtering. Feasible improvements can further extend the distance to 600 km. In the last two decades, network science has blossomed and influenced various fields, such as statistical physics, computer science, biology and sociology, from the perspective of the heterogeneous interaction patterns of components composing the complex systems. As a paradigm for random and semi-random connectivity, percolation model plays a key role in the development of network science and its applications. On the one hand, the concepts and analytical methods, such as the emergence of the giant cluster, the finite-size scaling, and the mean-field method, which are intimately related to the percolation theory, are employed to quantify and solve some core problems of networks. On the other hand, the insights into the percolation theory also facilitate the understanding of networked systems, such as robustness, epidemic spreading, vital node identification, and community detection. Meanwhile, network science also brings some new issues to the percolation theory itself, such as percolation of strong heterogeneous systems, topological transition of networks beyond pairwise interactions, and emergence of a giant cluster with mutual connections. So far, the percolation theory has already percolated into the researches of structure analysis and dynamic modeling in network science. Understanding the percolation theory should help the study of many fields in network science, including the still opening questions in the frontiers of networks, such as networks beyond pairwise interactions, temporal networks, and network of networks. Real-world complex systems always interact with each other, which causes these systems to collapse in an avalanche or cascading manner in the case of random failures or malicious attacks. The robustness of multilayer networks has attracted great interest, where the modeling and theoretical studies of which always rely on the concept of multilayer networks and percolation methods. A straightforward and tacit assumption is that the interdependence across network layers is strong, which means that a node will fail entirely with the removal of all links if one of its interdependent neighbours fails. However, this oversimplification cannot describe the general form of interactions across the network layers in a real-world multilayer system. In this paper, we reveal the nature of the avalanche disintegration of general multilayer networks with arbitrary interdependency strength across network layers. Specifically, we identify that the avalanche process of the whole system can essentially be decomposed into two microscopic cascading dynamics in terms of the propagation direction of the failures: depth penetration and scope extension. In the process of depth penetration, the failures propagate from layer to layer, where the greater the number of failed nodes is, the greater the destructive power that will emerge in an interdependency group. In the process of scope extension, failures propagate with the removal of connections in each network layer. Under the synergy of the two processes, we find that the percolation transition of the system can be discontinuous or continuous with changes in the interdependency strength across network layers, which means that sudden system-wide collapse can be avoided by controlling the interdependency strength across network layers.

Multilayer networked systems are ubiquitous in nature and engineering, and the robustness of these systems against failures is of great interest. A main line of theoretical pursuit has been percolation induced cascading failures, where interdependence between network layers is conveniently and tacitly assumed to be symmetric. In the real world, interdependent interactions are generally asymmetric. To uncover and quantify the impact of asymmetry in interdependence on network robustness, we focus on percolation dynamics in double-layer systems and implement the following failure mechanism: once a node in a network layer fails, the damage it can cause depends not only on its position in the layer but also on the position of its counterpart neighbor in the other layer. We find that the characteristics of the percolation transition depend on the degree of asymmetry, where the striking phenomenon of a switch in the nature of the phase transition from first- to second-order arises. We derive a theory to calculate the percolation transition points in both network layers, as well as the transition switching point, with strong numerical support from synthetic and empirical networks. Not only does our work shed light upon the factors that determine the robustness of multilayer networks against cascading failures, but it also provides a scenario by which the system can be designed or controlled to reach a desirable level of resilience., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

An optimal single-photon source should deterministically deliver one and only one photon at a time, with no trade-off between the source's efficiency and the photon indistinguishability. However, all reported solid-state sources of indistinguishable single photons had to rely on polarization filtering which reduced the efficiency by 50%, which fundamentally limited the scaling of photonic quantum technologies. Here, we overcome this final long-standing challenge by coherently driving quantum dots deterministically coupled to polarization-selective Purcell microcavities--two examples are narrowband, elliptical micropillars and broadband, elliptical Bragg gratings. A polarization-orthogonal excitation-collection scheme is designed to minimize the polarization-filtering loss under resonant excitation. We demonstrate a polarized single-photon efficiency of 0.60+/-0.02 (0.56+/-0.02), a single-photon purity of 0.975+/-0.005 (0.991+/-0.003), and an indistinguishability of 0.975+/-0.006 (0.951+/-0.005) for the micropillar (Bragg grating) device.
