Abstract

Georeferenced reconstructions can help understand the dynamic evolution of the urban context surrounding a historical site, supporting decision-making processes in the field of urban planning. The development of web applications that allow the interaction between 2D and 3D products, as well as their exploration, can facilitate virtual inspections and foster collaboration in digitization of interventions and site evolutions over time. The article discusses how virtual scene reconstructions and visits can provide alternatives to traditional in-situ tourism promotion, through digital storytelling solutions for the exploration of sites. The article also describes how 3D storytelling technologies are currently being used for dissemination cultural heritage sites. The case study of the Castello Farnese, an old XVI century heritage site in Piacenza (Italy), test the adoption of two distinct free and open-source JavaScript WebGL, Potree and Cesium, for the rendering of photogrammetric and laser scanning georeferenced scaled products and for the integration of narrative features such as annotations, camera animations, texts, and other multimedia contents. Potentials and limitations of both tools are discussed in detail, highlighting how they can be implemented for enhancing user experience in virtual tour and exploration of 3D products. In order to guarantee replicability for other case studies, source code of the implemented application is shared on GitHub along with its documentation for contributions.

Abstract

Aim. To assess the changes in cardiology diagnostics scope in the Russian Federation during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.Material and methods. In an online survey organized by the Division of Human Health of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including questions about changes in the workflow of diagnostic laboratories and the scope of cardiac diagnostics from March 2019 (pre-pandemic) to April 2020 (first wave of the pandemic) and April 2021 (recovery stage), 15 Russian medical centers from 5 cities took part.Results. The decrease in the diagnostics scope by April 2020 by 59,3% compared to March 2019, by April 2021, stopped and was replaced by growth (+7,1%, the recovery rate, 112,1%). The greatest increase was in routine examinations, such as echocardiography (+11,6%), stress echocardiography (+18,7%), stress single photon emission computed tomography (+9,7%), and to a lesser extent resting computed tomography angiography (+7,0%) and magnetic resonance imaging (+6,6%). The performance of stress electrocardiography, stress magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography for the diagnosis of endocarditis in April 2021 compared to March 2019 decreased by 10,3%, 63,2% and 62,5%, respectively.Conclusion. Due to the resumption of patient admissions for cardiac examinations during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with the anti-epidemic measures taken and certain changes in the workflow, there has been a recovery in the diagnostics scope in most of the included centers.

Abstract

Aim. To assess the impact of the first wave of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the diagnosis of heart disease in the Russian Federation.Material and methods. Fifteen Russian medical centers from 5 cities took part in an online survey organized by the Division of Human Health of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), containing questions regarding alterations in cardiovascular procedure volumes resulting from COVID-19 in March-April 2020.Results. A number of outpatients undergoing cardiac diagnostic procedures was noted in 80% of clinics. Cardiovascular procedure volumes in the period from March 2019 to March 2020 in general decreased by 9,5%, and from March 2019 to April 2020, by 56,5%. Stress electrocardiography decreased by 38,4%, stress echocardiography by 72,5%, stress single-photon emission computed tomography by 66,9%, computed tomography angiography by 49,7%, magnetic resonance imaging by 42,7%, invasive coronary angiography by 40,7%. Abstract

Objectives This study sought to establish worldwide and regional diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) and achievable administered activities (AAAs) for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). Background Reference levels serve as radiation dose benchmarks to compare individual laboratories against aggregated data, helping to identify sites in greatest need of dose reduction interventions. DRLs for SPECT MPI have previously been derived from national or regional registries. To date there have been no multiregional reports of DRLs for SPECT MPI from a single standardized dataset. Methods Data were submitted voluntarily to the INCAPS (International Atomic Energy Agency Nuclear Cardiology Protocols Study), a cross-sectional, multinational registry of MPI protocols. A total of 7,103 studies were included. DRLs and AAAs were calculated by protocol for each world region and for aggregated worldwide data. Results The aggregated worldwide DRLs for rest-stress or stress-rest studies employing technetium Tc 99m–labeled radiopharmaceuticals were 11.2 mCi (first dose) and 32.0 mCi (second dose) for 1-day protocols, and 23.0 mCi (first dose) and 24.0 mCi (second dose) for multiday protocols. Corresponding AAAs were 10.1 mCi (first dose) and 28.0 mCi (second dose) for 1-day protocols, and 17.8 mCi (first dose) and 18.7 mCi (second dose) for multiday protocols. For stress-only technetium Tc 99m studies, the worldwide DRL and AAA were 18.0 mCi and 12.5 mCi, respectively. Stress-first imaging was used in 26% to 92% of regional studies except in North America where it was used in just 7% of cases. Significant differences in DRLs and AAAs were observed between regions. Conclusions This study reports reference levels for SPECT MPI for each major world region from one of the largest international registries of clinical MPI studies. Regional DRLs may be useful in establishing or revising guidelines or simply comparing individual laboratory protocols to regional trends. Organizations should continue to focus on establishing standardized reporting methods to improve the validity and comparability of regional DRLs.

Abstract

The ceramic tile industry is a big consumer of feldspathic rocks and further raw materials able to act as flux during firing. This demand is currently fed with the recourse to a wide range of sources of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and metasomatic origin. The main geological features of flux deposits actually exploited by the ceramic industry are reviewed. The chemical and mineralogical composition is described to have a general picture of raw fluxes as well as average data and compositional perimeter for deposits of different origin. Overall beneficiation routes are drawn to trace the compositional path from deposit to commercial flux. The technological behavior in tile-making is shortly overviewed and new experimental data are provided on flux fusibility (by hot-stage microscopy). A chart is proposed to discriminate fluxes according to different fusibility.

Abstract

Objectives This study sought to describe worldwide variations in the use of myocardial perfusion imaging hardware, software, and imaging protocols and their impact on radiation effective dose (ED). Background Concerns about long-term effects of ionizing radiation have prompted efforts to identify strategies for dose optimization in myocardial perfusion scintigraphy. Studies have increasingly shown opportunities for dose reduction using newer technologies and optimized protocols. Methods Data were submitted voluntarily to the INCAPS (International Atomic Energy Agency Nuclear Cardiology Protocols Study) registry, a multinational, cross-sectional study comprising 7,911 imaging studies from 308 labs in 65 countries. The study compared regional use of camera technologies, advanced post-processing software, and protocol characteristics and analyzed the influence of each factor on ED. Results Cadmium-zinc-telluride and positron emission tomography (PET) cameras were used in 10% (regional range 0% to 26%) and 6% (regional range 0% to 17%) of studies worldwide. Attenuation correction was used in 26% of cases (range 10% to 57%), and advanced post-processing software was used in 38% of cases (range 26% to 64%). Stress-first single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging comprised nearly 20% of cases from all world regions, except North America, where it was used in just 7% of cases. Factors associated with lower ED and odds ratio for achieving radiation dose ≤9 mSv included use of cadmium-zinc-telluride, PET, advanced post-processing software, and stress- or rest-only imaging. Overall, 39% of all studies (97% PET and 35% SPECT) were ≤9 mSv, while just 6% of all studies (32% PET and 4% SPECT) achieved a dose ≤3 mSv. Conclusions Newer-technology cameras, advanced software, and stress-only protocols were associated with reduced ED, but worldwide adoption of these practices was generally low and varied significantly between regions. The implementation of dose-optimizing technologies and protocols offers an opportunity to reduce patient radiation exposure across all world regions.

Abstract

Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate gender-based differences in nuclear cardiology practice globally, with a particular focus on laboratory volume, radiation dose, protocols, and best practices. Background It is unclear whether gender-based differences exist in radiation exposure for nuclear cardiology procedures. Methods In a large, multicenter, observational, cross-sectional study encompassing 7,911 patients in 65 countries, radiation effective dose was estimated for each examination. Patient-level best practices relating to radiation exposure were compared between genders. Analysis of covariance was used to determine any difference in radiation exposure according to gender, region, and the interaction between gender and region. Linear, logistic, and hierarchical regression models were developed to evaluate gender-based differences in radiation exposure and laboratory adherence to best practices. The study also included the United Nations Gender Inequality Index and Human Development Index as covariates in multivariable models. Results The proportion of myocardial perfusion imaging studies performed in women varied among countries; however, there was no significant correlation with the Gender Inequality Index. Globally, mean effective dose for nuclear cardiology procedures was only slightly lower in women (9.6 ± 4.5 mSv) than in men (10.3 ± 4.5 mSv; p Conclusions Despite significant worldwide variation in best practice use and radiation doses from nuclear cardiology procedures, only small differences were observed between genders worldwide. Regional variations noted in myocardial perfusion imaging use and radiation dose offer potential opportunities to address gender-related differences in delivery of nuclear cardiology care.

Abstract

Alumina-pillared smectites have been found to abate nitrous oxide in the presence of methane. The results indicate that the yield of the reaction (N2O→N2+(1/2)O2) increases when pillared clays are exchanged with transition metals, single-pass conversion rates of >70% being attainable. In particular, when double exchanged (calcium and subsequently copper) alumina pillared montmorillonite/beidellite is used as a catalyst, de-N2O activity reaches a maximum, which is maintained even after 4 h of work at a space velocity of 5.5 h−1. A mechanism for the reaction is suggested, which implies that N2O is first adsorbed by the catalyst and then decomposes through two different paths: catalyst oxidation and catalyst reduction. Such a redox process explains the kinetic data.

Abstract

Il riflesso di trasalimento (startle) si presenta, sin dalla nascita, come una ri- sposta motoria di tipo multicomponenziale a stimoli brevi, improvvisi e di forte inten- sità. L’analisi di tale risposta ha trovato una vasta applicazione all’interno delle disci- pline dello sviluppo, in particolare di area medica e psicologica. In ambito medico, lo startle è utilizzato, soprattutto in epoca neonatale, come un precoce indice diagnostico di patologie a carico del SNC, mediante la valutazione della complessa risposta moto- ria che coinvolge l’intero corpo del bambino. La ricerca psicologica si focalizza, invece, sull’analisi di una singola componente della risposta: il riflesso di ammiccamento palpe- brale (eyeblink). Tramite la misurazione di questo riflesso, lo startle è considerato prin- cipalmente uno strumento d’indagine dello sviluppo cognitivo ed emotivo. Questo la- voro propone una rassegna delle principali procedure diagnostiche e sperimentali adot- tate in ambito medico e psicologico. Infine, soffermandosi principalmente sulle lacune di tipo misurativo presenti in entrambe le aree esaminate, viene evidenziata la necessità della messa a punto di nuove metodologie misurative per la rilevazione della risposta di startle nelle prime fasi dello sviluppo.

Abstract

A área de corantes é uma das mais conservadoras no setor de fabricação de placas cerâmicas. A redução de custos e o impacto sobre a saúde e o meio ambiente têm sido a força motriz na fabricação de pigmentos e os principais objetivos tecnológicos eram rotas mais rápidas de síntese e minimização de componentes e aditivos perigosos. O advento da decoração digital é analisado em relação a esta mudança de paradigma, de corante à tinta. Os requisitos para impressão por jato de tinta são revistos: propriedades reológicas, tensão superficial, potencial zeta, sedimentação, tamanho e forma de gota, cinética de penetração, tamanho de partícula, controle das propriedades elétricas, estabilidade em meio orgânico, maior força de cor. Como os pigmentos e matrizes convencionais comprovaram não serem adequados para a decoração digital, os fabricantes de corantes foram forçados a incrementar o processamento (etapa de micronização para os pigmentos) e a se envolverem no projeto da tinta (melhorando a força de cor para as matrizes). Desta forma, diferentes classes de corantes para tinta digital foram desenvolvidas: complexos organometálicos, pigmentos micronizados, metais coloidais, nanopigmentos e precursores sol reativos para síntese in situ. Os principais desafios para os fabricantes de tinta ainda são a estabilidade com o tempo (algumas vezes limitada a algumas semanas) e a gama (muito mais estreita que a dos corantes cerâmicos convencionais). Além disto, a quadricromia típica ou a hexacromia ainda são difíceis de serem obtidas com os corantes cerâmicos e os fabricantes de placas estão sempre selecionando paletas de cores não convencionais baseadas em tons de marrom. Esta circunstância está reavivando o interesse industrial para rotas alternativas de síntese de pigmentos (processos "bottom up") e soluções tecnológicas para melhorar o desempenho da cor (pigmentos revestidos, estruturas núcleo-casca, uso de iniciadores e tampões). As propriedades físico-químicas das tintas, que afetam a estabilidade com o tempo, estão se tornando críticas com a difusão crescente da decoração digital. Desta forma, tecnologias para o controle das suspensões coloidais e para o projeto de compósitos híbridos orgânico-inorgânicos estão tendo cada vez mais interesse e potencial de aplicação.

15. Microstructure and mechanical properties of Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramics

Abstract

Glass-ceramics are fine-grained polycrystalline materials formed when glasses of suitable composition are heat- treated and undergo controlled crystallisation. Their design consists in the choice of both chemical composition and firing cycle. Glass-ceramics can be used as bulk as well as, after being ground, as powders. Their application widens in many fields such as the electronic and biomedical one, but also as raw materials for both ceramic bodies and glazes. Moreover, they can be prepared through melting of raw materials and cast in order to form laminar sheets further used as facing tiles in buildings. In this work, microstructure and mechanical properties of two lithium-aluminosilicate-based glass-ceramics (LAS) have been characterised in order to investigate the relationships among process conditions, phase composition, microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties. In detail, microstructure was studied by scanning electron microscopy and phase composition by X-ray powder diffraction performed at both room and high temperature, followed by Rietveld refinements of data. Ultrasound speed, flexural stength, young's modulus, poisson's ratio, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness were measured. Moreover, the study of the weakening effect due to the industrial finishing process was carried out, comparing the results of fracture strength tests carried out on both industrial finished samples and samples finished according to the European standard EN 843-2. The most suitable firing cycle, determining crystalline composition and crystallite size, was designed by combining microstructural and phase composition analyses, achieving an insight also in glassy phase amount and composition. The results of mechanical characterisation have confirmed that such materials have outstanding performances for facing tiles application (modulus of rupture up to 200 MPa and fracture toughness around 2 MPa.m1/2). Mechanical properties resulted mostly influenced by process conditions, for example by thermal cycle and finishing procedure.

16. Predicting the frost resistance of clay roofing tiles: a reappraisal of mercury intrusion porosimetry

Abstract

The indirect prediction of frost resistance of bricks and tiles has been thoroughly investigated in the last decades, mainly on the basis of microstructural and physical features. This empirical approach gave rise to several models based on pore size, open porosity, water absorption and/or capillary rise. The present study is aimed at appraising these models on 13 industrially-manufactured roofing tiles with a different frost resistance determined by severe freeze/thaw testing (EN 539-2). Samples were characterised by measuring pore size distribution (MIP), pore specific surface (BET), open porosity and water absorption (ASTM C67 and C373), capillary rise (UNI 10859), microstructure (SEM) and phase composition (Rietveld-XRPD). No model is able to foresee reliably the frost resistance of roofing tiles, being the methods based exclusively on pore size (e.g. Maage durability index) somehow better, as water absorption and/or capillary rise data do not improve the prediction. All these empirical models exhibit a strong dependence on the data population and probably succeed only with a homogeneous sample in terms of both composition and manufacturing technology. Just the Maage's method is able to discriminate among scarcely (400 cycles), though many roofing tiles with the same durability factor were found to withstand between 100 and 400 cycles. The tiles with a frost resistance higher than expected, on the basis of their pore size distribution, contain abundant calcium-magnesium silicate phases formed during firing (e.g. anorthite, diopside) while products with a frost resistance lower than expected are characterised by large amounts of amorphous phase or residual mica-illite and quartz. This circumstance indicates a new way to achieve highly frost resistant roofing tiles that is alternative to the conventional design imposing microstructural rearrangements (low porosity and coarse pore size) through drastic batch changes and/or firing at higher temperature.

19. Phase transformations during liquid phase sintering of porcelain stoneware tiles: a petrological approach

Abstract

The sintering of porcelain stoneware tiles - a low porosity products with excellent technical performances - involves a complex evolution of both phase composition and chemistry of the liquid phase, that were investigated on seven body formulations (prevalently sodic or potassic and mixed Na-K) consisting of a mixture of ball clay, quartz and feldspars. Samples were characterized by isothermal and constant rate optical TDA (hot stage microscope) and quantitative XRPD on quenched specimens. In the early stage of sintering - when strong reduction of specific surface occurs without shrinkage - the main transformations are breakdown of clay minerals with formation of amorphous components, then over 1000 °C mullite and viscous phase. The intermediate step - accounting for most densification - involves a viscous flow driven by fast formation of abundant liquid phase, with feldspars-quartz eutectics composition. Already at 1100 °C, feldspars are mostly fused and the chemical evolution of melt proceeds with gradual enrichment in silica and constant Na/K ratio. At the temperature of industrial sintering (~1200 °C) the compositions of the viscous phase plot in a plateau in the SiO2-NaAlSi3O8-KAlSi3O8 system, corresponding to low temperature melts, that is extended from sodic to potassic terms. Overall, the behavioural difference of Na-rich and K-rich bodies depends more on kinetics of phase evolution (faster in sodic batches) and viscosity of the liquid phase (higher in potassic ones). In the final stage, a decreasing densification rate is contrasted by a coarsening mechanism, promoted by the wide range of pore and particle sizes of green compacts, and an important role is probably played by changes in the solubility of solids and gases in the liquid phase.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The association of hyperparathyroidism (HPT) with thyroid disease has long been known, but the mechanisms underlying such an association have not yet been clarified. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the main factors determining this combination of endocrine diseases, in a retrospective multicenter study. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients referred for parathyroid scintigraphy in the period 1990-1999. A total of 487 patients in the age range 17-65 years were selected for the analysis (339 women and 148 men); group A included 241 patients with primary and group B 246 patients with secondary HPT. RESULTS: A total of 124/241 patients in group A (51.5%), but only 92/246 patients in group B (38.2%) had thyroid disorders (notably nodular goiter) associated with HPT (P=0.0035). Thyroid disorders were evenly distributed throughout the entire 17-65 years age range in group A, but 17-40-year-old patients in group B had significantly fewer thyroid disorders than the older patients of the same group (15.5% compared with 43.3%, P

Abstract

The clinical, electrocardiographic, and scintigraphic effects of oral administration of nisoldipine were investigated using two separate study protocols. In the first, the acute effects of nisoldipine were evaluated by means of nuclear ventricolography and demonstrated no deleterious effects on global contractility and an amelioration of several hypokinetic segments. In the second protocol, myocardial perfusion effects were evaluated by means of tomoscintigraphy. An improvement of segmental uptake of thallium was caused by nisoldipine. The addition of atenolol markedly reduced the rate-pressure product and further improved myocardial perfusion.

Abstract

We report a case of Bartter's syndrome, a rare disease characterized by hypokalemia, increased plasma renin and angiotensin II levels with normal blood pressure. During the diagnostic work-up, the patient had renal scintigraphy in baseline and after captopril administration. Pharmacological blockade of the renin-angiotensin system with captopril resulted in bilateral and symmetrical renal abnormalities (increase of parenchymal transit time, time to maximum activity and retained cortical activity, with cortical trapping of the radiopharmaceutical). Baseline scintigraphy was normal. The findings are consistent with Bartter's syndrome pathogenesis. Captopril renography may be useful to differentiate Bartter's syndrome from other covert causes of hypokalemia.

1. The lysine salt of acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) at a dose equivalent to 400 mg/kg of acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) was intraperitoneally administered in rats. 2. After 30 and 120 min ASA did not modify the number of receptors nor the affinity of [3H] 8-OH-DPAT binding sites in pons and cerebral cortex. On the other hand, the receptor number in the cortex membranes decreased significantly using [3H] ketanserin as ligand, while the receptor number in the pontine membranes did not change. 3. These data support the involvement of central 5-HT receptors in the mode of action of ASA.

Abstract

Inter- and intraobserver reproducibility (R) of segmental 201Tl scores after stress (ST), redistribution (RD) and reinjection (RI) planar imaging were evaluated.Images were examined from 396 patients with suspected coronary artery disease, demonstrated by means of post-ST imaging of at least one perfusion defect. To eliminate external sources of variability, the same gamma camera, acquisition protocol and computer software were used in this multicenter study. Thallium-201 images of the anterior, left anterior oblique and left lateral projections were obtained immediately, 4 hr after exercise and 30 min after the injection of additional 201Tl either on the same day or on a different day. The left ventricle was divided into 15 segments and evaluated by three independent observers, blinded to clinical data, according to a five-point scale.The R score for ST, RD and RI images, expressed as an intraclass correlation coefficient, was 0.76, 0.74 and 0.72, respectively. After averaging multiple observer scores, R increased to 0.91, 0.90 and 0.89, respectively. Individual observer measurement of the R score was 0.48, 0.51 and 0.32 for ST-RD, ST-RI and RD-RI image pairs, respectively, and multiple observer scores showed R increases to 0.74, 0.76 and 0.58.This qualitative scale reliably assesses the severity of 201Tl perfusion defects, particularly when multiple-observer scores are averaged. Individual observer change scores should be taken with great caution, especially in studies involving the visual evaluation of RD-RI image changes.

Preintervention diagnostic work-up included captopril renal scintigraphy, which was suggestive of high probability of renovascular hypertension. Scintigraphic assessment 2 mo after angioplasty failed to show any abnormality after captopril administration, a finding in line with blood pressure beneficial response to renal artery revascularization. A 12-mo follow-up confirmed cure of hypertension.

Abstract

This study evaluates the prognostic value of captopril renal scintigraphy in hypertensive patients undergoing renal artery revascularization. Preoperative studies of 51 patients were correlated with blood pressure results at 6- and 12-mo follow-up. Captopril-renal scintigraphy was carried out 1 hr after oral administration of 50 mg of captopril, using either 220 MBq of 99mTc-DTPA or 74 MBq of 99mTc-MAG3, followed by a baseline study in case of abnormal results. Evidence of amelioration or normalization in relation to captopril study was considered predictive of blood pressure control following treatment. Blood pressure response was favorable in 37 patients, but failed to show any improvement in 14. The scintigraphic test was positive in 33 patients (15 cured, 17 improved, 1 failed) and negative in 18 (3 cured, 2 improved, 13 failed). Sensitivity and specificity for renovascular hypertension was 86.5% and 93%, respectively. For blood pressure cure and improvement, the test had positive and negative predictive values of 97% and 72%, respectively. A positive preoperative captopril renal scintigraphic result is a strong predictor of hypertension curability by renal artery revascularization.

Abstract

It is a widely held view that the NBAS (Brazelton, 1973) can index differences in the level of the neurobehavioural organization of both pathological and normal newborns. The present study employed the NBAS to determine whether the type of delivery, i.e. cesarean or spontaneous vaginal, can influence the level of neurobehavioural organization in the first days of life. To this aim, two groups of healthy newborns, as assessed through obstetrical anamnesis and the Apgar index, were compared at 4, 24, 72 hours of postnatal life. Ten newborns were born by cesarean section and 10 were born by spontaneous vaginal delivery. The results did not show any neurobehavioural differences for the five clusters of the NBAS: Response decrement, Orientation, Motor, Range and Regulation of states. This outcome fails to support the hypothesis that the level of neurobehavioural organization in the first hours of postnatal life depends on the type of delivery. It must be considered, however, that the null results could be attributed to the way the NBAS is administered according to Brazelton's criteria of "best performance" and "flexibility of the examiner". In essence, these criteria require the NBAS to be administered several times in succession, by varying the order of clusters and the order of items within a cluster, until the "best performance" is obtained. Therefore, a second experiment was conducted, in which the criticisms and suggestions put forward by Prechtl (1982) were taken into account. A same-day double injection protocol employing 99mTc-methoxyisobutyl isonitrile (MIBI) and myocardial single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) for detecting coronary artery disease (CAD) was assessed in 30 patients. SPECT was performed 1 hr after a first injection (250 MBq) of 99mTc-MIBI, given after 0.56 mg/kg dipyridamole (DPD) infusion. Patients were then reinjected at rest (750 MBq) and were reimaged 1 hr later. Within 1 wk, all patients underwent a complete stress-rest SPECT thallium study. Of the 330 myocardial segments evaluated, 25 were judged ischemic by both techniques, while persistent defects were demonstrated in 50 and in 47 with 99mTc-MIBI and 201TI, respectively. Six regions were considered for diseased vessels identification. Sensitivity and specificity for CAD were 100% and 75%, respectively, for both 201TI and 99mTc-MIBI. Sensitivity for identification of diseased vessels by 201TI was 68% for LAD, 89% for RCA, and 80% for LCX as opposed to 75%, 89% and 80%, respectively, by 99mTc-MIBI. Specificity was 93% in both cases for LAD, 73% and 63% for RCA, and 53% and 46% for LCX.

Abstract

Technetium-99m-mercaptoacetyltriglycine (99mTc-MAG3) was tested in 82 hypertensive patients submitted to renal scintigraphy 1 hr after oral premedication with 50 mg of Captopril. Baseline studies were obtained only for those patients showing abnormal findings in the provocative study. All patients underwent renal arteriography. Sensitivity and specificity for the detection of renal artery stenosis (RAS) greater than 50% were 89% and 91%, respectively. After Captopril administration, tracer parenchymal transit time increased significantly in ischemic kidneys (334 +/- 93 sec in baseline conditions versus 468 +/- 96 sec after Captopril, p less than 0.001) but not in kidneys with no RAS or RAS less than 50% (243 +/- 46 sec versus 271 +/- 95 sec, p = ns). False-positive responses were mostly bilateral and associated with a marked decrease in blood pressure. Technetium-99m-MAG3 is an effective compound for detecting RAS greater than or equal to 50% with Captopril renal scintigraphy. Performing the provocative test as a first step considerably reduced the number of scintigraphic studies required.

One-hundred five hypertensive patients underwent conventional renal scintigraphy followed 2 or 3 days later by Captopril-enhanced renal scintigraphy, performed 1 hr after premedication with 50 mg of Captopril per os. All patients were then submitted to renal arteriography, performed within 15-30 days. Fifty-five patients had no renal artery stenosis, 29 had unilateral disease, and 21 bilateral. Overall, 34/37 patients were diagnosed by the provocative test as having at least one renal artery affected by a stenosis greater than 50%. Of those with no stenosis (n = 55) or stenosis less than 50% (n = 13) only two cases were falsely positive. Thus sensitivity was 92% and specificity 97%. For single kidney identification with stenosis greater than 50%, sensitivity of renal scintigraphy after Captopril administration was 94% and specificity 98%. Captopril enhanced renal scintigraphy is thus suggested as the first test to be performed in hypertensive patients referred for renal scintigraphic studies. Only those cases with equivocal results require a baseline study for better assessment.

Abstract

Feline Vector-Borne Diseases show increased global prevalence and some Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species may pose a risk to human health. The diagnosis of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species infection in cats is achieved by the combined use of different methods as cytologic examination evidencing intracytoplasmic morulae, serologic tests and molecular assays. The peripheral whole blood is considered the sample of choice for Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species DNA detection in cats, but false negative results are reported leading to underestimation of infection prevalence. In order to have a more accurate assessment of the spread of feline vector-borne pathogens, the presence of Anaplasma spp. and Ehrlichia spp. DNA in 37 owner and shelter cats subjected to necropsy were prospectively investigated by testing in end-point PCR spleen, bone marrow, blood clot and hair samples. The bacteria identified were genetically characterised. Three shelter cats tested positive for A. phagocytophilum DNA in spleen (one cat) or in hair samples (two cats). None of the cats tested positive in bone marrow and blood samples. From the results obtained, it can be assumed that the use of spleen or hair samples could allow a more reliable detection of A. phagocytophilum DNA in cats with blood tested negative. In the phylogeny constructed with a fragment of the heat shock (groEL) gene nucleotide sequences, all the identified A. phagocytophilum clustered with bacteria infecting a wide range of hosts, including humans, showing a potential zoonotic role.

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease that causes serious illness in dogs. For this reason, epidemiological and clinical studies focusing on disease characterization are widely advocated. The aim of this study was to characterize the leptospires identified in dogs with confirmed symptomatic acute leptospirosis. Leptospira spp. DNA detected in urine, blood, or both samples from nine infected dogs was analyzed using the multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) technique. Leptospires from two dogs were successfully typed: one was identified as belonging to Sequence Type (ST) 17 and one to ST198, both within the L. interrogans species, serogroups Icterohaemorrhagiae and Australis, respectively. Based on the results of routine serologic tests, antibodies reactive toward these serogroups are commonly revealed in dogs in Italy. This study provides the first molecular analysis that identifies infecting Leptospira directly on DNA from biological samples of dogs, showing that serogroup Australis can lead to a severe clinical presentation of leptospirosis in infected dogs.

Abstract

Background Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and liver and peritoneum are the main sites of recurrence. Ovarian metastases from GIST are very rare. Case Presentation A 50 years-old woman was found to have a pelvic mass on transvaginal ultrasound (TV-US) and computed tomography (CT)-scan, considered as a right ovarian mass. The patient underwent surgical abdominal exploration that showed an ileal mass, a normal right ovary and an irregular and vascularized surface of the left ovary. A segmental ileal resection and an ileal anastomosis were performed. Frozen section showed a GIST and surgery was completed with hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, pelvic peritonectomy, peritoneal washing and Burch procedure. The histological examination confirmed an ileal GIST with ovarian metastases, harboring in both sites of disease a KIT exon 11 deletion. Conclusions Ovarian localizations, as far as rare, can be a clinical finding in case of ileal GIST patients, and both gynecologists, pathologists and medical oncologists should be able to recognize them. Abstract

The early diagnosis of acute leptospirosis is still a major challenge in dogs. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the suitability of two in-clinic tests detecting anti-leptospiral IgM and IgG antibodies in diagnosing canine leptospirosis. The performances of the two rapid tests were compared to the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) carried out on acute sera and to diagnostic criteria adopted in this study to confirm leptospirosis infection (MAT upon admission, convalescent MAT and quantitative real-time PCR on blood and/or urine). The dogs were enrolled on the basis of reported exposure to known risk factors and clinical presentation (acute kidney injury and/or systemic inflammatory response syndrome with multi-organ damage). Eighty-nine dogs included in the study were sub-grouped on the basis of the results of the diagnostic criteria adopted: (1) confirmed leptospirosis cases (42/89 dogs); (2) negative leptospirosis cases (36/89 dogs); and (3) unconfirmed leptospirosis cases (11/89 dogs). The results supported the usefulness of the two rapid diagnostic tests as a first in-clinic screening tool for suspected leptospirosis; positive results in the in-clinic tests in dogs with suggestive clinical and laboratory signs strongly indicated acute leptospirosis, while negative results required additional diagnostic investigation to exclude the infection. Confirmatory tests recommended for canine leptospirosis are still necessary in addition to the use of rapid in-clinic tests.

Abstract

The present study shows the results of direct ceramization of textile substrates with commercial derived TiO2 nanosols. A deep investigation on relationship between TiO2 based nanosols and nanocoatings properties and their performances in term of hydrophilicity and photocatalytic efficiency was performed. Five nanosols, differing for starting pH and relative agglomerates size were analyzed. The hydrophilic behavior and the catalytic performance of TiO2 coatings supported on different substrates (fabric, glass and ceramic) were assessed and related to physicochemical characterization results. The described correlations between TiO2 nanoscale properties (nanostructure or surface chemistry), macroscale properties (hydrophilicity), as well as functional properties (photocatalytic activity), represents a first attempt to provide sound criteria for the control of material performance by design experiments. The pH dependent aggregation state, is correlated to an increase of surface acidity as the shift of i.e.p. towards acid pH reveals. Such increase of acidity justifies an increase of hydrophilicity, consequent to stronger interaction with water molecules, that occurs when a higher amount of Ti−O− sites are available. As well, the photocatalytic performances and the hydrophilic behavior, resulted in a good agreement: the higher the hydrophilicity, the better the self-cleaning activity, so providing useful indications for the scale-up exploitation of such application.

Abstract

A water-based sol-gel combustion synthesis was optimized in order to achieve pure yttrium aluminium perovskite (YAlO3, YAP). The method involved three main steps: xerogel formation, combustion treatment and calcination of the combusted precursors. TG DTA, FTIR and XRPD, used to investigate the precursor phase evolution, confirmed the strong influence of gel synthesis conditions, combustion temperature and calcination rate on YAP purity. Both stoichiometry and kinetics control during all the preparation steps are crucial in order to avoid the formation of undesired Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and Y4Al2O9 (YAM) stable phases. This method allowed to synthesize, for the first time from an aqueous sol-gel process, single phase samples of YAP. A series of samples with composition: YAl(1-x)Cr(x)O3 where x is 0, 0.035, 0.135, 0.250, 0.500, 0.750 was obtained. A consistent decrease of calcination temperature, with respect to conventional solid state synthesis, was achieved by sol-gel combustion, avoiding polyphase materials even without the use of mineralizers. This is an important result in several applications like the synthesis of ceramic pigments.

La presente rassegna è centrata sull’analisi dei più importanti contributi scientifici relativi alle asimmetrie posturali e motorie di tipo funzionale che il bambino manifesta nell’orientamento del capo e nella preferenza per una mano (handedness). Sono stati presi in considerazione i principali fattori che possono determinare ed in- fluenzare le asimmetrie osservate in tali comportamenti nelle prime fasi dello sviluppo. Il lavoro propone, in seguito, una sintesi del percorso evolutivo tracciato dalle diverse asimmetrie corporee oggetto di studio. Al termine di questo excursus appare chiara- mente come l’emergere delle lateralizzazioni che caratterizzano l’orientamento del capo e l’handedness possa essere ritenuto il risultato di una complessa interazione di fattori genetici e ambientali. Allo scopo di offrire un contesto teorico adeguato all’analisi di questi fenomeni, viene infine proposta una nuova lettura delle origini delle lateralizza- zioni attraverso la teoria dei sistemi dinamici.

Abstract

The structural relaxation around Cr(3+) in YAl(1-x)Cr(x)O(3) perovskites was investigated and compared with analogous Cr-Al joins (corundum, spinel, garnet). Eight compositions (x(Cr)((3+)) from 0 to 1) were prepared by sol-gel combustion and were analyzed by a combined X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron absorption spectroscopy (EAS) approach. The unit cell parameters and the XRD averaged octahedral (Cr,Al)-O and ([VIII])Y-O bond distances scale linearly with the chromium fraction. The optical parameters show an expected decrease of crystal field strength (10Dq) and an increase of covalency (B(35)) and polarizability (B(55)) toward YCrO(3), but a nonlinear trend outlines some excess 10Dq below x(Cr)((3+)) approximately 0.4. The local Cr-O bond lengths, as calculated from EAS, indicate a compression from 1.98 A (x(Cr)((3+)) = 1.0) down to 1.95 A (x(Cr)((3+)) = 0.035) so that the relaxation coefficient of perovskite (epsilon = 0.54) is the lowest in comparison with garnet (epsilon = 0.74), spinel (epsilon = 0.68), and corundum (epsilon = 0.58) in contrast with its structural features. The enhanced covalent character of the Cr(3+)-O-Cr(3+) bond in the one-dimensional arrangement of corner-sharing octahedra can be invoked as a factor limiting the perovskite polyhedral network flexibility. The increased probability of Cr-O-Cr clusters for x(Cr)((3+)) greater than approximately 0.4 is associated to diverging trends of nonequivalent interoctahedral angles. The relatively low relaxation degree of Y(Al,Cr)O(3) can be also understood by considering an additional contribution to 10Dq because of the electrostatic potential of the rest of the lattice ions upon the localized electrons of the CrO(6) octahedron. Such an "excess" of 10Dq increases when the point symmetry of the Cr site is low, as in perovskite, and would be affected by the change of yttrium effective coordination number observed by XRD for x(Cr)((3+)) greater than approximately 0.4. This would justify the systematic underestimation of local Cr-O bond distances, as inferred from EAS, compared to what is derived from X-ray absorption (XAS) studies implying a stronger degree of relaxation around Cr(3+) of all the structures considered and supporting the hypothesis that 10Dq from EAS contains more information than previously retained particularly an additional contribution from the next nearest neighboring ions.

Abstract

An innovative two-step route was successfully applied to the microwave-assisted synthesis of Pr–ZrSiO 4 , V–ZrSiO 4 and Cr–YAlO 3 ceramic pigments. It is able to reduce the total synthesis time from many hours down to a few minutes. Industrial batches were pelletized and underwent a short time pre-heating in conventional electric furnace (from 300 up to 1000 °C) prior to dielectric heating in microwave oven (2.45 GHz, 800 W continuous or paused). Pre-heating is necessary to reach a thermal level at which pigment precursors are activated under microwave irradiation (high enough tan δ of dielectric properties). Activation kinetics was followed by measuring (optical pyrometer) the external temperature of crucible during MW irradiation and the internal temperature at the end of heating process. Pigments were characterized by colourimetry (CIE Lab) and XRPD with Rietveld refinement. The V–ZrSiO 4 system is easily activated, already at pre-heating of 300 °C, with good reaction yield and colour performance; nevertheless it is difficult to keep under control, as temperatures exceeding 1200 °C are rapidly reached. The Pr–ZrSiO 4 system is activated after pre-heating over 600 °C and exhibits a slow kinetics, resulting in a low reaction yield and unsatisfactory colour. The Cr–YAlO 3 pigment is formed with colour and reaction yield close to those of the correspondent industrial product, even though after pre-heating at 800 °C or more. A peculiar behaviour of silica phases was observed in zircon systems, particularly after lower pre-heating temperatures. It consists in an early transformation of quartz (present as precursor) into cristobalite and abundant amorphous phase, before the SiO 2 + ZrO 2 → ZrSiO 4 transformation occurred.

Abstract

Negli ultimi anni i prodotti musivi in ceramica vetro hanno ottenuto un notevole incremento delle vendite, per utilizzi come materiale sia da rivestimento che da pavimento. Attualmente con il termine “mosaico” non si intendono solamente tessere lapidee o vetrose di ridotte dimensioni, tagliate e utilizzate da artigiani, ma anche tessere prodotte industrialmente e assemblate per creare motivi decorativi personalizzati. Lo scopo di questo studio è quello di progettare, sviluppare e caratterizzare tecnologicamente delle nuove formulazioni per mosaico colorato. Il quale possa poi essere prodotto a livello di piccola industria.
