With the growing demand for higher wireless data rates, the interest in extending the carrier frequency of wireless links to the terahertz (THz) range has significantly increased. For long-distance outdoor wireless communications, THz channels may suffer substantial power loss and security issues due to atmospheric weather effects. It is crucial to assess the impact of weather on high-capacity data transmission to evaluate wireless system link budgets and performance accurately. In this article, we provide an insight into the propagation characteristics of THz channels under atmospheric conditions and the security aspects of THz communication systems in future applications. We conduct a comprehensive survey of our recent research and experimental findings on THz channel transmission and physical layer security, synthesizing and categorizing the state-of-the-art research in this domain. Our analysis encompasses various atmospheric phenomena, including molecular absorption, scattering effects, and turbulence, elucidating their intricate interactions with THz waves and the resultant implications for channel modeling and system design. Furthermore, we investigate the unique security challenges posed by THz communications, examining potential vulnerabilities and proposing novel countermeasures to enhance the resilience of these high-frequency systems against eavesdropping and other security threats. Finally, we discuss the challenges and limitations of such high-frequency wireless communications and provide insights into future research prospects for realizing the 6G vision, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions to overcome the atmospheric hurdles and security concerns in THz communications., Comment: Submitted to Fundamental Research

The propagation of millimeter wave (MMW) and sub-terahertz (THz) signals through plasma sheaths is a critical concern for maintaining communication with hypersonic vehicles, yet the impact of complex plasma structures on these high-frequency channels remains insufficiently understood. In this work, we aim to characterize the transmission properties of MMW and sub-THz waves through plasma sheaths with various density profiles and ripple structures, addressing the gap in knowledge regarding the effects of plasma inhomogeneities on signal propagation. We employ an approach combining Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) data with transfer matrix methods (TMM) to model propagation through both flat and rippled plasma layers. Our findings reveal that ripple structures in plasma sheaths significantly affect channel performance, with periodic ripples reducing cutoff frequency and introducing frequency-selective behavior, while random ripples cause more unpredictable transmission characteristics. Our results explore the impact of the arrangement of plasma density layers and the parameters of ripple structures (period and amplitude) on channel transmission, group velocity dispersion, and angular dependence of wave propagation. The calibration of weather radar for detecting meteorological phenomena has advanced rapidly, aiming to enhance accuracy. Utilizing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a suspended metal sphere introduces an efficient calibration method by allowing dynamic adjustment of the UAV's position, effectively acting as a mobile calibration platform. However, external factors such as wind can introduce bias in reflectivity measurements by causing the sphere to deviate from its intended position. This study develops a theoretical model to assess the impact of the metal sphere's one-dimensional oscillation on reflectivity. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) assisted terahertz (THz) wireless communications have been expected to play a vital role in the next generation of wireless networks. UAVs can serve as either repeaters or data collectors within the communication link, thereby potentially augmenting the efficacy of communication systems. Despite their promise, the channel analysis and modeling specific to THz wireless channels leveraging UAVs remain under explored. This work delves into a ground-to-UAV channel at 140 GHz, with a specific focus on the influence of UAV hovering behavior on channel performance. Employing experimental measurements through an unmodulated channel setup and a geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) that integrates three-dimensional positional coordinates and beamwidth, this work evaluates the impact of UAV dynamic movements and antenna orientation on channel performance. The dielectric properties of environmental surfaces, including walls, floors and the ground, etc., play a crucial role in shaping the accuracy of terahertz (THz) channel modeling, thereby directly impacting the effectiveness of communication systems. Traditionally, acquiring these properties has relied on methods such as terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) or vector network analyzers (VNA), demanding rigorous sample preparation and entailing a significant expenditure of time. However, such measurements are not always feasible, particularly in novel and uncharacterized scenarios. In this work, we propose a new approach for channel modeling that leverages the inherent sensing capabilities of THz channels. By comparing the results obtained through channel sensing with that derived from THz-TDS measurements, we demonstrate the method's ability to yield dependable surface property information. Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) data transmission through surface reflection is pivotal for enhancing the reach and efficiency of terahertz (THz) communication systems. However, this innovation also introduces significant eavesdropping risks, exacerbated by the complex bistatic scattering effects during adverse weather conditions like rain. This work delves into the assessment of the vulnerabilities of NLOS THz communication channels to eavesdropping under simulated rain conditions using metallic wavy surfaces (MWS). The observation reveals the feasibility of successful signal interception under these conditions, highlighting a prevalent security concern for outdoor terahertz communication networks utilizing NLOS channels to broaden coverage. In the evolving domain of wireless communication, the investigation on terahertz (THz) frequency spectrum, spanning 0.1 to 10 THz, has become a critical focus for advancing ultra-high-speed data transmission technologies. The effective deployment of THz wireless communication techniques mandates a complete study of channel performance under various atmospheric conditions, such as rain, fog, cloud, haze, and notably, snow. These environmental elements significantly impact the design of the protocol stack, ranging from physical-layer signal processing to application design and strategic network planning. An in-depth understanding of channel propagation and fading characteristics in real-world environments, especially over ultra-wide bandwidths, is crucial. This work presents a comprehensive measurement-based and theoretical investigation of line-of-sight (LoS) THz channel performance in snowy conditions. It methodically examines both the empirical and predicted aspects of channel power and bit-error-ratio (BER). The effects of snowfall rate, carrier frequency, ambient temperature, and relative humidity on channel performance are analyzed and discussed. Our findings demonstrate that snowy conditions not only amplify power loss but also induce rapid fluctuations in the power levels of the THz channel. Notably, our results reveal an absence of significant multipath effects in these scenarios. The Terahertz (THz) frequency band offers a wide range of bandwidths, from tens to hundreds of gigahertz (GHz) and also supports data speeds of several terabits per second (Tbps). Because of this, maintaining THz channel reliability and efficiency in adverse weather conditions is crucial. Rain, in particular, disrupts THz channel propagation significantly and there is still lack of comprehensive investigations due to the involved experimental difficulties. This work explores how rain affects THz channel performance by conducting experiments in a rain emulation chamber and under actual rainy conditions outdoors. We focus on variables like rain intensity, raindrop size distribution (RDSD), and the channel's gradient height. We observe that the gradient height (for air-to-ground channel) can induce changes of the RDSD along the channel's path, impacting the precision of modeling efforts. To address this, we propose a theoretical model, integrating Mie scattering theory with considerations of channel's gradient height. Both our experimental and theoretical findings confirm this model's effectiveness in predicting THz channel behavior in rainy conditions. In the evolving landscape of terahertz communication, the behavior of channels within indoor environments, particularly through glass doors, has garnered significant attention. This paper comprehensively investigates terahertz channel performance under such conditions, employing a measurement setup operational between 113 and 170 GHz. Analyzing scenarios frequently induced by human activity and environmental factors, like door movements, we established a comprehensive theoretical model. This model seamlessly integrates transmission, reflection, absorption, and diffraction mechanisms, leveraging the Fresnel formula, multi-layer transmission paradigm, and knife-edge diffraction theory. Our experimental results and theoretical predictions harmoniously align, revealing intricate dependencies, such as increased power loss at higher frequencies and larger incident angles. Furthermore, door interactions, whether opening or oscillations, significantly impact the terahertz channel. Notably, door edges lead to a power blockage surpassing the transmission loss of the glass itself but remaining inferior to metallic handle interferences. In the field of integrated sensing and communication, there's a growing need for advanced environmental perception. The terahertz (THz) frequency band, significant for ultra-high-speed data connections, shows promise in environmental sensing, particularly in detecting surface textures crucial for autonomous system's decision-making. However, traditional numerical methods for parameter estimation in these environments struggle with accuracy, speed, and stability, especially in high-speed scenarios like vehicle-to-everything communications. This study introduces a deep learning approach for identifying surface roughness using a 140-GHz setup tailored for high-speed conditions. A high-speed data acquisition system was developed to mimic real-world scenarios, and a diverse set of rough surface samples was collected for realistic high-speed datasets to train the models. The model was trained and validated in three challenging scenarios: random occlusions, sparse data, and narrow-angle observations. The advancement of millimeter wave and terahertz technologies have revolutionized high speed wireless networks and precise tracking systems. These technologies offer unique penetration capabilities in specific scenarios, significantly enhancing the capability to investigation plasma. Recent breakthroughs include the precise diagnosis of plasma electron density using terahertz time domain spectroscopy and the modeling of plasma sheaths in re-entry spacecraft through scattering matrices. Concurrently, extensive research efforts have been dedicated to comprehending plasma's influence on electromagnetic wave behaviors, encompassing reflection, transmission, absorption and also phase shift. In this paper, we employ COMSOL Multiphysics software to create an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) device, enabling the simulation of various plasma density arrangements. Our investigation focuses on unraveling the intricate interplay between plasma configurations and millimeter-wave transmission characteristics. The findings underscore the substantial impact of diverse plasma concentration arrangements on the behavior of electromagnetic waves traversing through them. Recognition of road surface conditions should always be at the forefront of intelligent transportation systems for the enhancement of transportation safety and efficiency. When road surfaces are covered by ice or snow, accident rate would increase due to the reduction of road surface roughness and also friction between tire and road. High-resolution recognition of natural and manmade surfaces has been proved to be achievable by employing radars operating at low-terahertz frequencies. In this work, we present theoretical investigations on surface condition recognition of an icy road by employing low-terahertz frequencies. A theoretical model combining integral equation method (IEM), radiative transfer equation (RTE) and Rayleigh scattering theory is developed. Good agreement between the calculation results and measured data confirms the applicability of low-terahertz frequencies for the evaluation of icy road surface in winter. The influence of carrier frequency, ambient temperature, impurities inside the ice layer and frozen soil surface conditions on the efficiency of this method is presented and discussed.

The applications of terahertz (THz) radiation for plant water status monitoring require systematic studies on interaction of THz wave and plants. Here, we present theoretical investigations on scattering behavior of THz waves reflected by and transmitting through a plant leaf under different water content. A theoretical model combining integral equation and radiative transfer theory is presented to fit the measured data. Good agreement confirms the availability of the model for water status evaluation when variation of leaf thickness and surface roughness is considered. We investigate the applicability of THz waves for water status monitoring in reflection and transmission geometries under different temperatures, salinities and polarizations.

Wireless communication technique at terahertz (THz) frequencies is regarded as the most potential candidate for future wireless networks due to its wider frequency bandwidth and higher data capacity when compared to that employing radio frequency (RF) and millimeter wave (mmWave). Besides, a THz link can achieve higher security at physical layer when it propagates in clear weather due to its higher directionality, which reduces the possibility of eavesdropping attacks. However, under adverse weather conditions (such as water fog, dust fog, rain and snow), the link degradation due to weather particles and gaseous molecules will affect the link secrecy performance seriously. In this work, we present theoretical investigations on physical layer security of a point-to-point THz link in rain and snow with a potential eavesdropper locating outside of the legitimate link path. Signal degradation due to rain/snow, gaseous attenuation and beam divergence are included in a theoretical model to estimate the link performance. Secrecy capacity of the link with carriers at 140, 220 and 340 GHz is calculated and compared. Insecure regions are also presented and the secrecy performance is analyzed. Wireless networks operating at terahertz (THz) frequencies have been proposed as a promising candidate to support the ever-increasing capacity demand, which cannot be satisfied with existing radio-frequency (RF) technology. On the other hand, it likely will serve as backbone infrastructure and could therefore be an attractive target for eavesdropping attacks. Compared with regular RF spectrum, wireless channels in the THz range could be less vulnerable to interceptions because of their high beam directionality and small signal coverage. However, a risk for eavesdropping can still exist due to the multipath effects caused by unintended scattering. In this work, an eavesdropping risk for THz channel passing atmospheric turbulences and producing compromising emissions is investigated from a physical layer perspective. A model combining signal attenuation due to turbulence, gaseous absorption and beam divergence, is developed for prediction of deterministic and probabilistic signal leakages. The secrecy capacity and outage probability of the THz channel are derived and analyzed with respect to variations of the turbulence strength and other channels characteristics. The dependence of the channel performance on the eavesdropper's position is investigated with respect to the maximum safe data transmission rate (MSR) and the signal leakage region. Design results for THz channels are provided to minimize an eavesdropping risk at physical layer.

We demonstrate the reliability and applicability of THz imaging for destructive and non-destructive water status monitoring of winter wheat leaves. Based on the measured THz transmission amplitude, we find that the water loss in the distal region is less than that in the basal region during the nature dehydration process. A high correlation is shown between the transmitted THz signal and water content level measured by gravimetric weighing method during dehydration and after rehydration. The obtained results show that the water content in winter wheat leaves can be measured destructively and non-destructively with a high accuracy, using terahertz waves in a transmission geometry.

As the demand for enabling high-level autonomous driving has increased in recent years and visual perception is one of the critical features to enable fully autonomous driving, in this paper, we introduce an efficient approach for simultaneous object detection, depth estimation and pixel-level semantic segmentation using a shared convolutional architecture. The proposed network model, which we named Driving Scene Perception Network (DSPNet), uses multi-level feature maps and multi-task learning to improve the accuracy and efficiency of object detection, depth estimation and image segmentation tasks from a single input image.
