The longstanding view of Neotropical mountain uplift as a promoter of species diversification has become commonplace in the last decades and could benefit from more specific Earth-Life evolution associations. We now know that mountain formation has contributed to the outstanding levels of richness and endemism of Neotropical mountains. Nonetheless, we are lacking conceptual and empirical frameworks where geological and biological processes are causally linked through testable hypotheses. In this perspective, we present volcanic activity in the Neotropics, not as phenomena occurring “on top of” mountain uplift, the latter being the phenomena of biogeographical interest, but rather as geological processes that directly impact biodiversity and are themselves the phenomenon of biogeographical interest. Volcanoes deserve biogeographical attention because their effects on landscape evolution generate predictable biodiversity process counterparts that can be integrated into biogeographical models enabling hypothesis testing. We review examples in the literature emphasizing the spatio-temporal scale of volcanism’s predicted and recorded effects on biodiversity. We illustrate our perspective by two recent study cases, focusing on wax palms and passerine birds. In the first one, wax palm genomic sampling was used to test 2 hypotheses: that the northern Andes have been disconnected in the past and connected by rapid but repeated eruptions of caldera-forming eruptions in the Colombian Massif fostering episodic dispersal, or alternatively, that they have always been continuous and have gradually uplifted hosting continuous diversification and dispersal through time. In broadly this same area, genetic and phenotypic data revealed the existence of a hybrid zone between species in the warbler genus Myioborus. Because hybridization is likely younger than volcanic activity, topographic connection spurred by volcanism could have also enabled secondary contact between previously isolated species, a hypothesis that merits formal testing. Altogether, we emphasize the pertinence of the volcanic record in offering opportunities for the evaluation of biogeographical hypotheses in the context of Neotropical mountains and their singularly outsized biodiversity.

We conducted a study on the petrology, geochemistry, and zircon U–Pb dating of Late Devonian intrusive rocks in the Tulargen area of the Eastern Tianshan Orogenic Belt, Xinjiang, China. These intrusive rocks primarily consist of gabbro (382 ± 5 Ma), tonalite (370.9 ± 2.7 Ma), and biotite monzogranite (362.8 ± 4.4 Ma). Gabbro belongs to the low-K calc-alkaline series of quasi-aluminous rocks, with a high Al2O3 content (16.46–20.34 wt.%) and Mg# value (64.55–67.73). Tonalite and biotite monzogranite, which belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series, are metaluminous or weakly peraluminous and also exhibit high Al2O3 contents (14.6–15.87 wt.%) and Mg# values (40.12–62.47). These rocks are enriched in light rare-earth and large-ion lithophile elements (Rb, Ba, and K) and depleted in heavy rare-earth and high-field-strength elements (e.g., Ta, Nb, and Ti), characteristics typical of island-arc magmatic rocks. Gabbro melts are primarily derived from the mantle and result from the partial melting of a depleted mantle that has undergone fluid metasomatism due to subducted plates. Tonalite exhibits high 176Hf/177Hf and εHf(t) values, with a younger two-stage model age (tDM2) derived from partial juvenile crust melting. The source magma of the biotite monzogranite originated from partial metabasalt melting at a medium crustal depth combined with a new lower crustal material. We concluded that the Late Devonian intrusive rocks in this area formed within the island-arc tectonic setting are associated with the subduction of the North Tianshan Ocean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structure, composition, and evolution of oceanic plateaus are poorly understood and strongly debated. Here, we compared the magmatic history and crustal structure of Afar with the Greenland–Iceland–Faroe Ridge and other oceanic plateaus. Key similarities indicate that Central Afar represents the early stage of development of a specific type of oceanic plateau: a rifted oceanic magmatic plateau (ROMP). These features begin their formation before continental rifting and develop into wide magmatic rift systems capable of isolating slivers of continental crust within the new igneous crust. Importantly, the anomalous magmatism continues through breakup and for several tens of millions of years afterward. The recognition of Central Afar as a precursor of this type of oceanic plateau allows us to better understand their formation. Increased melt production causes early and voluminous magmatism, ultrathick igneous crust, and repeated reorganization of the extension locus during rift/ridge jumps, which delay the onset of oceanization and Penrose-style crustal production. These factors differentiate ROMPs from many magma-rich rifted continental margins and from other types of oceanic plateaus, highlighting that Central Afar and other ROMPs should neither be considered as conventional magma-rich margins nor be considered as normal oceanic crust. Ophiolites, mostly formed via subduction initiation at proto-forearcs, exhibit a unique variation of mantle-derived magmatism from MORB-like to low-Ti tholeiitic and bainitic-like affinities. Such variation was suggested to form chromite deposits spanning high-Al to high-Cr types. Nevertheless, the origin of diverse magmatism during subduction initiation and their linkages to different chromite deposits has long been enigmatic. Here we show elemental and Os isotopic compositions of different chromitites from the Zambales ophiolite, Philippines. Combined with data from ophiolites worldwide, high-Al and high-Cr chromitites are revealed to result from low-Ti tholeiitic and boninitic-like magmatism, respectively. Proto-forearc mantle had few chromitites generated during MORB-like magmatism, but afterwards, it was modified first by slab fluids and later by continuous asthenospheric upwelling in the context of slab densification and rollback. The latter modification elevated the geothermal gradient and replenished fertile components in the proto-forearc mantle progressively, inducing increasingly higher degrees of mantle melting and Cr-richer magmatism and chromitites. Varied rates of slab rollback are the fundamental driving force for the evolution of infant subduction zones. The thick crust of the southern Tibetan and central Andean plateaus includes high-conductivity, low-velocity zones ascribed to partial melt. The melt origin and effect on plateau uplift remain speculative, in particular if plateau uplift happens before continental collision. The East Anatolian Plateau (EAP) has experienced similar, more recent uplift but its structure is largely unknown. Here we present an 80 km deep geophysical model across EAP, constrained by seismic receiver functions integrated with interpretation of gravity data and seismic tomographic, magnetotelluric, geothermal, and geochemical models. The results indicate a 20 km thick lower crustal layer and a 10 km thick mid-crustal layer, which both contain pockets of partial melt. We explain plateau uplift by isostatic equilibration following magmatism associated with roll-back and break-off of the Neo-Tethys slab. Our results suggest that crustal thickening by felsic melt and mafic underplate are important for plateau uplift in the EAP, Andes and Tibet. The age of formation of the explosion pipes of the Chapinskii complex in the Chingasan magmatic belt in the northern part of the Yenisei Ridge is determined. U–Pb dating of zircon megacrysts from alkaline ultramafic rocks has established the values of 657.7 ± 13.4 and 647.6 ± 9.7 Ma for the Natalyinskaya pipe and Pipe no. 3, respectively. The intrusion of alkaline ultramafic explosion pipes of the Chapinskii complex corresponds to the time of manifestation of alkaline ultramafic magmatism along the southern and southwestern margin of the Siberian Craton. We investigated the crustal radial anisotropy in the eastern South China Block (ESCB) with the F‐J multimodal ambient noise tomography. Well corresponding to widespread mid‐crustal low‐velocity zones in the VSV ${V}_{SV}$ model, a pronounced mid‐crustal channel of positive radial anisotropy is revealed. In the Cathaysia Block, it may origin from sub‐horizontally aligned quartz induced by extension and correspond to the phase transition of α $\alpha $ to β $\beta $ quartz. In other areas, while, it may be relevant to other well‐aligned minerals. This positive mid‐crustal radial anisotropy channel not only provides the solid evidence for dominative extensional deformation since late Mesozoic, but also may indicate an important detachment surface, contributing much to the early Mesozoic magmatism in the ESCB. Plain Language Summary: Seismic radial anisotropy represents that the vertically and horizontally polarized shear‐waves propagate at different wave velocities, providing useful insights into crustal deformation. In areas with extensional deformation, the positive radial anisotropy, which denotes that the shear‐wave velocity along horizontally polarized direction is larger than that along vertically polarized direction, has been widely found in the middle and lower crust. However, this is still a lack of detailed investigation on the crustal radial anisotropy and validation on the existence of positive mid‐crustal radial anisotropy in the ESCB although it also experienced crustal extension since the late Mesozoic. In result, we investigated the crustal radial anisotropy in this area with the F‐J multimodal ambient noise tomography and revealed a pronounced mid‐crustal channel of positive radial anisotropy (MCC‐PRA). This MCC‐PRA may correspond to phase transitions of relevant well‐aligned minerals, solidly supporting the extensional deformation. Meanwhile, the MCC‐PRA may represent the crustal brittle‐ductile transition zone because its top accords well with the depth distribution of earthquakes. More importantly, it may indicate an important detachment surface, playing a critical role in the early Mesozoic magmatism in the ESCB. The late Mesozoic igneous rocks along the coastal South China Block (SCB) exhibit complex parental sources involving a depleted mantle, subducted sediment-derived melt, and melted crust. This period aligns with the magmatic flare-up and lull in the SCB, debating with the compression or extension in coastal region. Our study employs numerical models to investigate the dynamics of the ascent of underplating magma along the Changle–Nan'ao Belt (CNB), simulating its intrusion and cooling processes while disregarding the formational background. The rheological structure of the lithospheric mantle significantly influences magma pathways, dictating the distribution of magmatism. This work reveals that the ascent of magma in the presence of faults is considerably faster than in the absence of faults, and contemporaneous magmatic melts could produce different cooling and diagenetic processes. Additionally, the influence of pre-existing magma accelerated the emplacement of underplating magma. The magma beneath the fault ascended rapidly, reaching the lower crust within 20 million years, with a cooling rate of approximately ∼ 35 °C Myr -1. Conversely, the thickened magma took 40–50 million years to ascend to the lower crust, cooling at a rate of ∼ 10 °C Myr -1. In contrast, magma without thickening and fault would take a considerably longer time to reach the lower crust. The ascent of magma formed a mush-like head, contributing to magmatic circulation beneath the crust and decreasing crustal thickness. Multiphase magmatism increases the geothermal gradient, reducing lithospheric viscosity and promoting underplating magma ascent, leading to magmatic flare-ups and lulls. Our findings suggest that the Cretaceous magmatism at different times in the coastal SCB may be associated with the effects of lithospheric faults under similar subduction conditions. Boundary compression forces delay magma ascent, while rising magma induces a significant circulation, decreasing the crustal thickness of the coastal SCB. This study provides new insights into the complex interplay of magmatic processes during subduction, emphasizing the role of lithospheric structure in shaping the temporal and spatial evolution of coastal magmatism. The main ocean–continent transformation stage of the Qinling and Qilian conjunction zone happened in the Early Paleozoic with the occurrence of a lot of subduction–collision–related magmatic rocks. However, there is still considerable controversy over the duration of the subduction–collision orogeny process of the Proto-Tethys Ocean, here termed as the Wushan–Shangdan Ocean. We provide geochronological, geochemical, and Lu-Hf isotopic data for typical Early Devonian igneous rocks there, named Tailu pluton. The Tailu pluton at 410 Ma comprised K-rich, calc-alkaline, metaluminous A-type granite with low Y/Nb ratios (0.85 to 1.35) and A/CNK values (0.90 to 1.01); with high SiO2 contents (65.44 to 74.46 wt%), Mg# values (39.2 to 50.7), and zircon saturation temperatures (745 to 846 °C); and with negative εHf (t) values (−8.0 to −1.9); therefore, they resulted from the partial melting of the ancient felsic lower crust accompanied by the incorporation of mantle-derived material during the intraplate magmatism process. Research on Tailu pluton has provided more sufficient evidence for the evolution process of the Qinling–Qilian conjunction zone in the Early Paleozoic, associated with evolution of the Wushan–Shangdan Ocean, the northern part of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. For the northeastern part of the Chingiz–Tarbagatai segment of the Boshchekul–Chingiz folded area, U‒Pb age estimates of Middle Paleozoic granitoid complexes were obtained for the first time and their geochemical features were described. The recent data indicate a wide distribution of Late Silurian granitoids, represented by I-type rocks, on this territory. Early Devonian rocks form a number of separate volcano-plutonic structures, the granitoids of which can be classified as A-type. The compositional features of granitoids formed during the Cambrian‒Devonian enable one to trace the evolution of the crust of this part of the Chingiz–Tarbagatai segment from an ensimatic island arc to a volcanic belt with a relatively mature continental-type crust. New U–Th–Pb (SIMS)–geochronological, petro-geochemical, and Sr–Nd isotopic data for granitoids of three plutonic complexes (Sakhani, Omchikanda, and Arga–Emneken), located in the joint area of the two large batholih belts of the Verkhoyan–Kolyma fold area, Glavnyi and Severnyi, are presented. The Valanginian–Hauterivian age of the granitoids of all three complexes is established. The similarity of the granites and leucogranites of the Omchikanda and Sakhani complexes to the I–S-type granites and the similarity of the Arga–Emneken granitoids to the I-type granites are shown. The petro-geochemical peculiarities of the granitoid composition indicate a metasedimentary source for the granites and leucogranites of the Omchikanda and Sakhani complexes and a metamagmatic (amphibolitic) source for granitoids of the Arga–Emneken Complex. Sr–Nd isotopic data show that the granitoids were melted from different crustal sources, in which there are various proportions of mature material of the continental crust. The totality of geological and newly obtained geochronological, petro-geochemical, and isotopic data allow us to suppose a collisional setting of their formation in the terminal Valanginian–Hauterivian stage of collision between the Kolyma–Omolon microcontinent and the Siberian continent. A large mantle helium anomaly and separate domains of high heat flow are the predominant manifestations of bimodal magmatic activity in the Milford valley. The mantle helium anomaly (1.9–2.6 R/Ra) covers 270 km2 and is subdivided into two separated domains: a cold shallow groundwater regime and high temperature hydrothermal activity. The zone of anomalous heat flow covers >100 km2 and is also subdivided into two adjacent domains, comprising hydrothermal activity at Roosevelt Hot Springs (RHS) (3–7 W/m2) and conductive heat flow (100–180 mW/m2). While the transfer of heat and mantle helium at RHS are coupled, heat and helium transfer are decoupled in the adjacent cold groundwater regime to the west. Both the mantle helium and geothermal anomalies are attributed to recent mafic‐felsic magmatic intrusions of >400 km3, however, the absence of volcanic eruptions <500,000 years indicates magmas stall before rising to shallow crustal level <10 km depth. Deep level magmatism produces a felsic composition melt, which is inferred to be responsible for the widespread and near uniform range of diluted mantle helium values. A thick and impermeable mass of crystalline granitic basement rock at the mid‐crustal level divides the ascent of mantle helium into separate flow paths. It may also impede the rise of buoyant magma trapping thermal energy that facilitates partial melting, slow cooling, and development of a thick thermal aureole. Partitioning of convective and conductive thermal regimes and independent flow paths supplying deeply derived helium characterize the development of a large long‐lived magma‐related geothermal system. The Milford valley in southwest Utah is host to a long dormant volcanic center whose modern expression is mostly limited to hydrothermal activity at Roosevelt Hot Springs, which has produced energy since 1984. The US Department of Energy established the Utah FORGE enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) field laboratory in an adjacent zone of extensive hot dry crystalline rock to advance new methods of energy production. Newly discovered additional natural expression of the geothermal system occurs in the shallow cold groundwaters defined by infiltration of deep‐derived mantle helium. It is the primary indication of undiscovered zones of high heat flow and geothermal resources concealed beneath the surface. The isotopic composition of the helium, plus the high geothermal heat flow, suggest that helium is derived from a large body of magma (>400 km3) that is similar in composition to the volcanic deposits that erupted 500,000 to 800,000 years ago in the nearby Mineral Mountains. A thick mass of impermeable granitic rock forms a barrier to magma ascent, suppressing the recent volcanic activity, and producing geothermal resources instead. The Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash contain some of the highest topography in the Andes and provide insight into tectonomagmatic processes associated with the onset of flat-slab subduction. These adjacent ranges shared a similar history of deformation and exhumation prior to the late Miocene, when synconvergent extension began in the Cordillera Blanca. Magmatism in the Cordillera Huayhuash has been inferred as coeval with magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca. Yet, extension, which has been correlated with magmatic heat flow, is limited to the Cordillera Blanca. New zircon U-Pb dates and trace and rare earth element concentrations from the Cordillera Blanca batholith and the Huayllapa pluton in the Cordillera Huayhuash and reassessment of existing zircon data help to characterize regional magmatic processes prior to the establishment of flat-slab subduction. Two compositionally distinct samples of the Huayllapa pluton yielded mean ages of 24.8 ± 0.4 Ma and 25.4 ± 0.8 Ma. In contrast, the Cordillera Blanca batholith has a protracted crystallization history postdating that of the Cordillera Huayhuash by up to 20 m.y. Miocene magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca began at 19 Ma and ended with injection of large volumes of geochemically distinct, mantle-derived magma from 10 to 5 Ma. We suggest that 6–5 Ma magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca promoted elevated heat flow and reduced shear strength, which facilitated extensional shearing along the western slopes of the range, whereas colder amagmatic crust in the Cordillera Huayhuash inhibited southward propagation of faulting. Our data demonstrate that the linkages between magmatism and elevated heat flow identified in the Cordillera Blanca are important driving processes in initiating extension in cordilleran-style orogenies. Continental alkaline magmatism has been suggested to play a significant role in releasing deep mantle carbon into the atmosphere, which can greatly impact the global climate. However, the temporal variations of alkaline magmatism and their potential to modulate climate over geologic time remain poorly constrained. The detrital zircon record is a frequently used proxy for tracking secular variations in particular magmatism. Here, we use a novel machine‐learning technique to discriminate zircon from carbonatites, kimberlites, and other alkaline rocks. A global compilation of detrital zircon yields continental alkaline magmatic flare‐ups between 1,050−850, 650−500, 250−200, and 50−0 Ma. Our estimates indicate relatively elevated contributions of total magmatic carbon outgassing from alkaline magmatism during the aforementioned magmatic flare‐ups. We infer that anomalous alkaline magmatism may influence global warming during specific intervals of geologic time, but when they are not that voluminous or persistent extensive arc magmatism may drive warming conditions. The petrogenesis and geodynamic setting of the Mesozoic magmatic rocks in the Erguna Block, NE China remains controversial, especially the relationship between magmatism and the subduction history of the Mongol–Okhotsk oceanic plate. Here we present data for the Early Jurassic–Early Cretaceous adakite-like magmatic rocks from Chaoman Farm in the northeastern part of the Erguna Block. Zircon U-Pb dating reveals that the syenogranites crystallized at around 190–180 Ma, while the monzonites, quartz diorite porphyries, and quartz monzonite porphyries were emplaced at around 147–143 Ma. The syenogranites, monzonites, quartz diorite porphyries, and quartz monzonite porphyries are adakite-like rocks. The syenogranites and quartz monzonite porphyries were produced by the partial melting of a thickened ancient mafic lower continental crust and a thickened juvenile lower crust, respectively. Meanwhile, the monzonites and quartz diorite porphyries were formed as a result of partial melting of the oceanic crust. In conclusion, the occurrence of these Early Jurassic magmatic rocks was closely linked to the process of southward subduction of the Mongol–Okhotsk oceanic plate. On the contrary, the Late Jurassic to early Early Cretaceous magmatism (147–143 Ma) occurred in an extensional environment, and was probably triggered by upwelling of the asthenosphere. The Weishancheng area of Tongbai County, Henan Province, is an important Au‐Ag polymetallic ore concentration area in China, characterized by a widespread distribution of plutons and frequent magmatic activities. To investigate the genetic relationship between magmatism and the mineralization of gold and silver polymetallic deposits in the area, this study focuses on the porphyritic monzogranite of the Liangwan pluton and the biotite granite of the Taoyuan pluton in detail. The zircon U‐Pb age of the Liangwan pluton is 128.5 ± 0.7 Ma, placing its intrusion age in the Early Cretaceous. Similarly, the zircon U‐Pb age of the Taoyuan pluton is 431.3 ± 2.7 Ma, indicating an intrusion age in the Early Silurian. Petrogeochemical analysis reveals that both the Liangwan and Taoyuan plutons exhibit high SiO2, Na2O and Al2O3 contents, along with low MgO, Fe2O3 and CaO contents, indicating a (high‐K) calc‐alkaline series, and have the properties of peraluminous I‐type granite. The total rare earth elements (REE) concentrations are low, with noticeable fractionation between light and heavy REE, and a negative Eu anomaly. High‐field‐strength elements (such as Nb, Ta, P, Ti) are depleted, while the large‐ion lithophile elements (such as Rb, K, Pb) are enriched. The εHf(t) values of the Liangwan and Taoyuan plutons range from −16.1 to −18.8 and from 11.0 to 14.6, respectively. The mean values of Hf two‐stage model ages (TDM2) are 603 Ma and 2230 Ma, respectively. These results suggest that the Liangwan pluton may have formed through partial melting of ancient crustal materials in the Palaeoproterozoic, during extensional tectonic events following the subduction of Izanagi Plate. It appears closely linked to Au‐Ag mineralization in the ore concentration area. The Taoyuan pluton likely originated from the depleted mantle and experienced some degree of crustal contamination. The late‐stage union of Pangea was associated with the convergence of Siberia with Laurussia, but the exact timing remains unclear. The orogenic duration of the Kazakhstan block can provide geochronological constraints as it connects Siberia, Baltica, and Tarim. Zircon petrochronology offers a reliable approach for ascertaining the lifespan of an ancient orogen. In this study, we explore three phases of magmatism recorded in detrital zircons from late Paleozoic and Mesozoic sandstone‐siltstones in Western Tianshan, that is, 400–470 Ma, 320–380 Ma, and 280–320 Ma. Based on their age‐propagated Hf isotopes, melt SiO2 contents, and crustal thicknesses, our findings suggest that the southern limb of Kazakhstan underwent the early Paleozoic amalgamation of microcontinents with arcs, the late Paleozoic maturation of an Andean‐like continental arc, and the late Carboniferous collision of Kazakhstan with the Junggar oceanic basin and the Tarim craton. Such characteristics manifest the long‐term orogenic progression of Kazakhstan. Combining published timelines and paleolatitudes of major orogens and blocks, we propose that the Kazakhstan block welded northeastern Pangea along with the cessation of these orogenic activities around it. Consequently, by docking Kazakhstan with surrounding cratons, the fundamental configuration of Pangea could have been established in the late Carboniferous. Our results demonstrate that episodic variations in melt compositions, crustal thicknesses, and Hf isotopes reveal the long‐lived orogenic progression of the southern limb of Kazakhstan and constrain its incorporation into Pangea to the late Carboniferous. Such an event was almost contemporaneous with the assembly of Baltica and Siberia with the northern limb of Kazakhstan but occurred slightly later than the collision of Laurussia with Gondwana. The amalgamation of Laurentia was initiated along the western margin of the Rae craton. However, the tectonic setting that generated magmatic rocks along this margin has long been debated, with the Thelon tectonic zone in the north having formed in an arc setting, and the Taltson magmatic zone in the south variably attributed to either continental arc or intracratonic magmatism. The magmatic rocks of the Great Slave Lake shear zone (GSLsz) lie between these two tectonic belts and, thus, may be critical to the interpretation of the evolution of the western Rae margin. To understand the origin of the rocks in the GSLsz, we have applied U‐Pb geochronology, trace‐element geochemistry, and O and Hf isotope analyses to zircons from a suite of samples that transect the La Loche River fault (LRf)—a major structure that bisects the GSLsz. Samples collected to the north of the LRf are Neoarchean in age, have mantle‐like δ18O (4.7–5.8‰) and chondritic to juvenile εHf values (0–4.5), whereas those to the south are exclusively Paleoproterozoic in age and have more elevated δ18O (6.3–7‰) and much more evolved εHf values (−12 to −6); these results indicate that the LRf marks a crustal‐scale suture between the Slave craton and the Taltson magmatic zone. Our isotopic data, together with other regional constraints from the area, are most consistent with the Taltson magmatic zone having formed in a continental arc setting emplaced into ca. 2.3 Ga juvenile basement crust. Syn-exhumation and post-collisional mafic magmatism in continental collision orogenic belts may provide insights into the nature of orogenic lithospheric mantle and recycled continental components in continental subduction zones. Lithium and its isotopes have emerged as potentially valuable tools for shedding light on the origin of these magmas, given the contrast Li contents and isotopic compositions between the subducting continental crust and the mantle. Here, we present high-precision Li isotopes data for representative orthogneiss, continental eclogite, syn-exhumation and post-collisional mafic magmatic rocks from the North Qaidam orogen. The syn-exhumation mafic magmatic rocks have relatively higher Li contents (26.5-50.0 ppm) and lower δ7Li values (-1.01%o-1.48%o) than those of the post-collisional mafic magmatic rocks (Li = 11.1-22.7 ppm, δ7ϋ = 1.20%-3.38%), which are comparable to those of orthogneiss and continental eclogite, respectively. Dehydration and melting modelling results show that these mafic magmatic rocks have similar Li contents and δ7Li values to the continental eclogite- and orthogneiss-derived melts but are different from their derived fluids. Monte Carlo simulation for Li-Nd isotopes suggests the syn-exhumation and post-collisional mafic rocks could be derived from an enriched mantle source that contains ~3-8% continental crustal components dominated by the orthogneiss and continental eclogite. The calculated results are consistent with the results from the previous study simulated by trace elements. Understanding the onset and episodes of magmatism is essential for comprehending tectonic history, crustal extension, and geodynamic processes. However, due to physical constraints, many places have remained unexplored, which makes it difficult to understand their geological evolution. Following thorough sedimentary provenance analysis, the chronology and periods of magmatism within a drainage area can be revealed through the detrital zircon U-Pb dating method. Here, we present detrital zircon U-Pb ages (n = 1429) obtained from sediments in modern rivers of the Gongga batholith in the eastern Tibetan Plateau. Our results reveal five major magmatic episodes since the early Mesozoic. Three episodes of magmatism occurred in the early to middle Mesozoic (ca. 230–200 Ma, ca. 200–180 Ma, and ca. 180–160 Ma), followed by a protracted period of magmatic quiescence. During the Cenozoic, there were two main periods of magmatism at ca. 50–25 Ma and ca. 25–5 Ma. This is consistent with bedrock geochronological data acquired previously. We propose that the Mesozoic magmatism was most likely caused by postcollisional extension after the closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. The two Cenozoic magmatic episodes are coeval with the progressive intensification of Xianshuihe fault activity. Consequently, these episodes highlight two significant phases of plateau growth in the eastern Tibetan Plateau: the northward push of the Indian plate and “lateral extrusion,” which is consistent with the ongoing subduction of the Indian plate beneath the Eurasian plate. Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.3 Ga) magmatism in the North China Craton (NCC) was dominated by mafic intrusions (dolerite sills) with lesser amounts of granitic magmatism, but our lack of knowledge of this magmatism hinders our understanding of the evolution of the NCC during this period. This study investigated porphyritic granites from the Huade–Kangbao area on the northern margin of the NCC. Zircon dating indicates the porphyritic granites were intruded during the Mesoproterozoic between 1285.4 ± 2.6 and 1278.6 ± 6.1 Ma. The granites have high silica contents (SiO2 = 63.10–73.73 wt.%), exhibit alkali enrichment (total alkalis = 7.71–8.79 wt.%), are peraluminous, and can be classified as weakly peraluminous A2-type granites. The granites have negative Eu anomalies (δEu = 0.14–0.44), enrichments in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs; e.g., K, Rb, Th, and U), and depletions in high-field-strength elements (HFSEs; e.g., Nb, Ta, and Ti). εHf(t) values range from –6.43 to +2.41, with tDM2 ages of 1905–2462 Ma, suggesting the magmas were derived by partial melting of ancient crustal material. The geochronological and geochemical data, and regional geological features, indicate the Mesoproterozoic porphyritic granites from the northern margin of the NCC formed in an intraplate tectonic setting during continental extension and rifting, which represents the response of the NCC to the break-up of the Columbia supercontinent. New U-Pb zircon ages are reported for granulite facies crustal xenoliths brought to the surface by mafic lavas in the Snake River Plain. All samples yield Meso-to-Neoarchean ages (2.4–3.6 Ga) that significantly expand the known extent of the Archean Wyoming Craton at least as far west as the west-central Snake River Plain. Most zircon populations indicate multiple growth episodes with complexity increasing eastward, but they bear no record of major Phanerozoic magmatic episodes in the region. To extrapolate this work further west to the inferred craton boundary, zircons from southwestern Idaho batholith granodiorites were also analyzed. Although most batholith zircons record Cretaceous formation ages, all samples have zircons with inherited cores—with some recording Proterozoic ages (approaching 2 Ga). These data enhance our perspectives regarding lithosphere architecture beneath southern Idaho and adjacent areas and its possible influence on Cenozoic magmatism associated with the Snake River Plain–Yellowstone "melting anomaly". In the Dom Feliciano Belt, Brazil, the Pinheiro Machado Complex (PMC) includes diorites, tonalites, granodiorites, syenogranites and granites, whose evolution is related to several magmatic pulses and complex petrogenetic processes. Two magmatic stages were identified (early and late), resulting in different rock subgroups. The geochemical data showed that the early magmatism was chemically affected by partial melting. Geochemical modelling results suggest that fractional crystallization processes with assimilation of around 40% from the crustal basement and the decoupling of assimilated magma are crucial for the PMC rocks' genesis. Geochemical data also show that during the early magmatism, the subsequent process of early diorite anatexis developed by heating and continuous activity of the underlying magma chamber possibly occurred at a melting rate of 5%–10%. The hybrid rocks have contributions from the mixing process related to early terms, showing geochemical correlations in the major element curves, for the early diorite and syenogranitic melt members, at 60%–50% and 50%–40%, respectively. Slab failure tectonic context is related to the multi‐intrusive events dynamics recorded in the studied rocks. Recharge and melting events of the recently formed crust due to the constant heating of new pulses of deep slab melting would explain the magmatic interactions observed in the Complex. The results demonstrate that the studied rocks crystallized in an open system, including mixing processes to form hybrid rocks, physical disaggregation and assimilation of early intrusions, truncation, dragging and erosion of early mushes by younger pulses. Comprehensive U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology of Ediacaran sandstones from Oman indicates that they originated from Neoproterozoic basement with a peak magmatic age of ca. 850-780 Ma (Tonian), with lesser Paleoproterozoic and Ediacaran sources and renewed magmatic input starting at ca. 550 Ma. Comparison with detrital zircons from the Arabian-Nubian and NW Indian Shields supports an eastern Gondwana affinity for the Ediacaran succession of Oman. Tonian basement sediment sources are present in Oman. Sources for older Paleoproterozoic zircons (ca. 2500 and 1800 Ma) are not found in Oman but are known from the cratonic Indian Shield. The signal of the main magmatic events of the juvenile Arabian-Nubian Shield, peaking at ca. 640-620 Ma, is rare or absent in the Ediacaran rock succession of Oman. However, deformed Ediacaran clastic units with an Arabian-Nubian Shield affinity occur in western Oman. Influx of latest Ediacaran-early Cambrian zircons (550-525 Ma) is interpreted as due to final Cambrian Angudan/Malagasy orogeny-related magmatism. These results, together with new ages for volcano-sedimentary terranes in the subsurface of SW Oman and seismic observations, support the interpretation that the Ediacaran succession of Oman was deposited along the western, passive margin of the Greater Indian Shield, on the eastern (east and west in this paper refer to present-day coordinates) side of the Mozambique Ocean. Oman then collided with the Arabian-Nubian Shield in the early Cambrian, when the Angudan/Malagasy orogeny led to final consolidation of Gondwana. Our data support the inference that the youngest and final suture between the Indian and Arabian Shields lies in the subsurface of Oman along the early Cambrian western deformation front. The widespread High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) exhibits prolonged melting over more than 50 Myr, an observation that is difficult to reconcile with the classic view that large igneous provinces (LIPs) originate from melting in plume heads. Hence, the suggested plume‐related origin and classification of HALIP as a LIP have been questioned. Here, we use numerical models that include melting and melt migration to investigate a rising plume interacting with lithosphere of variable thickness, that is, a basin‐to‐craton setting applicable to the Arctic. Models reveal that melt migration introduces significant spatial and temporal variations in melt volumes and pulses of melt production, including protracted melting for at least about 30–40 Myr, because of the dynamic feedback between migrating melt and local lithosphere thinning. For HALIP, plume material deflected from underneath the Greenland craton can re‐activate melting zones below the previously plume‐influenced Sverdrup Basin after a melt‐free period of about 10–15 Myr, even though the plume is already ∼500 km away. Hence, actively melting zones do not necessarily represent the location of the deeper plume stem at a given time, especially for secondary pulses. Additional processes such as (minor) plume flux variations or local lithospheric extension may alter the timing and volume of HALIP pulses, but are to first order not required to reproduce the long‐lived and multi‐pulse magmatism of HALIP. Since melting zones are always plume‐fed, we would expect HALIP magmatism to exhibit plume‐related trace element signatures throughout time, potentially shifting from mostly tholeiitic toward more alkalic compositions. Plain Language Summary: Typically, the arrival of a large mantle upwelling ("mantle plume") is expected to cause catastrophic large‐scale volcanism that lasts a few million years. However, a massive past volcanic event now distributed onshore and offshore across the Arctic (the High Arctic Large Igneous Province—HALIP) defies this definition. This wide‐spread magmatism exhibits dates spanning more than 50 Myr, with several pulses of activity. Based on this prolonged magmatism, it has been questioned whether all of it can be attributed to a mantle plume, despite the geochemistry of basalts indicating a plume source. Here, we show that a plume can cause prolonged and multi‐pulse magmatism if it interacts with an increase in lithosphere thickness. Once the plume moves below the thicker lithosphere, hot plume material is channeled along the base of the lithosphere toward the adjacent thinner part, where it can reactivate previous melting regions. At this time, the active plume can be about 500 km away from the melting region, hence plume‐related melt cannot be used as a proxy for the plume position at the given time. Based on the models, we suggest that the prolonged HALIP magmatism was caused by a plume interacting with the edge of a craton. Understanding how the Miocene N–S‐trending rifts on the southern Tibetan Plateau formed is crucial for understanding the evolution of the plateau. Most competing models suggest that all the rifts developed uniformly, but there are differences in magmatism among them. We conducted ambient noise tomography based on a broadband seismic array deployed across the rifts. A mid‐crustal low‐Vs layer extends laterally beneath the Tangra Yum Co Rift and the Pumqu‐Xianza Rift, implying that E‒W stretching of the ductile middle crust segmented the brittle upper crust, causing rifting and subsequent magmatism. In contrast, the Yadong‐Gulu Rift, which experienced prerifting magmatism, is characterized by an isolated low‐Vs anomaly extending subvertically from the surface to the middle crust, indicating that the crust experienced magmatic intrusion and local disruption, which promoted the later formation of a large rift. The results suggest that the various rifts might have distinct formation modes. These rifts are often considered as a whole in studies on their developmental modes. However, different rifts exhibit variations in terms of the timing of magmatism (before or after rifting). To further investigate the formation modes of different rifts, we used the ambient noise method to obtain the crustal shear wave velocity structure. The presence of a low‐velocity layer in the mid‐crust indicates a vertical layering of crustal strength, which reveals that the upper crustal segmentation together with ductile deformation of the weak mid‐crust contributed to the formation of some rifts. In contrast, the presence of an isolated low‐velocity anomaly extending to the mid‐crust implies that a disruption of the lateral crustal strength caused the formation of another rift. Our findings will change the traditional understanding of the formation of N–S‐trending rifts and the evolution of the Tibetan Plateau. A big mantle wedge (BMW) is defined as the broad region of upper mantle above a stagnant slab in the mantle transition zone (MTZ). It is a common and significant structure within Earth's interior at modern convergent plate margins as revealed by seismic data yet rarely identified in fossil convergent systems. We propose the existence of a BMW beneath the Western Mongolia Collage during the early to middle Paleozoic based on a comprehensive chronology of geological events that characterized the accretionary orogen in this region. The trench-arc system initially developed above a NE-dipping subduction zone, with subduction-related arc magmatism clustered at ca. 530-490 Ma and accumulations of flysch-like sequences from the Cambrian to early Silurian constituting the accretionary wedge of the Altai Zone. The westward migration of the arc was likely driven by slab rollback and trench retreat, leading to gradual formation of a BMW as the slab stagnated at the MTZ. The BMW influenced the tectonic evolution of the entire Western Mongolia Collage, inducing Ordovician--Silurian intraplate magmatism in regions inboard of the migrating magmatic arc and the potential opening of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean. Westward movement of the trench-arc continued until the Devonian, resulting in back-arc basin formation in the Chinese Altai and intraplate magmatism in the Hovd and Lake Zones of the Western Mongolia Collage, forming a trench--arc--back-arc and intraplate tectonic system. Alkalic magmatism occurred in the Selwyn Basin, Yukon, Canada throughout the Paleozoic, concurrent with extension during passive margin sedimentation. To examine magmatism associated with this extension, geochemical data were obtained from several locations in the Selwyn Basin (MacMillan Pass, Anvil District, Keno Hill, and the Misty Creek Embayment). Volcanic rocks from the Anvil District and the Misty Creek Embayment are dominated by alkalic basalts with light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched geochemical signatures, whereas metavolcanic and dike samples from Keno Hill comprise subalkaline basalts with enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt (E-MORB) signatures. The Early Ordovician Menzie Creek volcanic rocks of the Anvil District display trace element geochemical signatures intermediate between ocean island basalt (OIB) and E-MORB, whereas the Middle–Late Ordovician volcanic rocks from the Misty Creek Embayment have OIB signatures. Differences in the trace element geochemistry of the sample suites are attributed to the degree of partial melting. The Menzie Creek volcanic rocks formed from large volume melts of enriched mantle that diluted incompatible element signatures in the Early Ordovician. Late Ordovician magmatism produced the Misty Creek Embayment samples, where restricted melt volumes of an enriched mantle source resulted in the most enriched samples geochemically. The Keno Hill samples represent the shallowest melting of the analysed samples and may have resulted from melting of heterogenous subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Magmatic zircons from a Keno Hill metavolcanic sample analysed by chemical abrasion thermal ionization mass spectrometry resulted in a primary deposition age of c. 296 ± 0.36 Ma (Early Permian), during a period with little magmatism in the Selwyn Basin and representing a previously unknown unit in the area. The analysis of olivine-hosted melt inclusions (MIs) from the whole sub-alkaline and alkaline magmatic suites of Mt. Etna provides fundamental information about the composition of undifferentiated magmas and their pristine volatile content. Olivine crystals (Fo88-66) were selected for Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) analysis of volatile species (H2O, CO2, F, Cl and S) contained in their host MIs, after preliminary high-pressure/high-temperature re-homogenization, which allowed to reduce the developing of cracks in the host olivine and diffusion-driven outgassing of volatiles from the melt inclusions. This permitted to explore the compositional variability of volatiles of undifferentiated melts and the degassing behavior through the feeding system. The studied MIs show significant major elements compositional heterogeneities (44.57–52.37 wt% SiO2; 3.60–7.51 wt% Na2O + K2O). Fractionation modelling was performed with Rhyolite-MELTs under variable fO2 regimes (∆FMQ + 1.5 to + 3), starting from the less evolved MIs compositions and ultimately reproducing most of the observed compositional trends. Mantle melting modelling was used to replicate the observed MIs composition, starting from a spinel-lherzolitic source, accounting for the alkalinity and Fe content of reproduced melts by varying the eutectic contribution of Amph/Phlog and Opx/Cpx respectively. Although most of the studied MIs were degassed in an open-conduit regime, the observed range of volatile concentration in MIs (2.42–6.14 wt% H2O; 308–8474 ppm CO2; 132–697 ppm F; 221–1766 ppm Cl and 16–1992 ppm S) is correlated with a slight decrease in the molar H2O/(H2O + CO2) ratio from early tholeiites to the recent 2015 alkaline products. This observation allows to estimate a minimum 12,250 ppm CO2 and a maximum of 6.14 wt% H2O in primary melts of the current activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Sr‐Nd‐Hf‐Pb isotope geochemistry of the Late Miocene Tunceli Volcanics suggests that they are the products of mixed asthenospheric and lithospheric mantle melts. The combined elemental and mineral chemistry data additionally indicate that a pyroxenite component of lithospheric origin is involved in their genesis. Calculations favor melting depths of ∼2 GPa for the Tunceli lavas, that is, deeper than the current lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary beneath Eastern Anatolia. Geochemical data suggest that during regional Neo‐Tethyan subduction, dense (i.e., pyroxenite‐bearing) domains formed by progressive melt intrusion into the lower lithosphere resulted in gravitational instabilities. This unstable density configuration eventually led to the foundering of the eastern Anatolian lithosphere in the Late Miocene, resulting in progressive melting of fusible pyroxenite‐bearing domains at asthenospheric depths. We demonstrate that these pyroxenitic melts mixed with ambient asthenospheric melts and generated the Tunceli lavas. Plain Language Summary: The Eastern Anatolian High Plateau (EAHP) that formed after the collision of Arabian and Eurasian continents hosts a huge volcanic system. The nature of the source region from which these volcanics originated and the geological dynamics that triggered this widespread volcanic activity are still under debate. We suggest that volcanism occurred when the lithospheric mantle beneath the EAHP separated physically from the overlying crust and sank into the deep asthenosphere. In this study, we explore the geochemical evidence for this model by focusing on the Late Miocene Tunceli Volcanics, one of the early stage members of post‐collisional volcanics in the EAHP. Our data suggest that the Tunceli Volcanics are the products of mixed asthenospheric and lithospheric mantle melts. The lithosphere contains a dense pyroxenite component that forms when silica‐rich melt invades the lower lithosphere during the subduction process. Calculations have shown that these dense materials melted at higher depths than the base of the lithosphere beneath the region. Thus, we propose that the dense domains in the lower lithosphere resulted in gravitational instabilities and eventually led to the foundering of the eastern Anatolian lithosphere in the Late Miocene. It was recognized that two magmatic belts in the Lhasa‐Tengchong terrane formed due to the Mesozoic‐Cenozoic Tethyan evolution. Still, their spatiotemporal variations of magmatic flare‐ups/lulls are rarely discussed. Here we use the new U‐Pb and Lu‐Hf isotopic data of captured zircons and a comprehensive data set to show that the flare‐up of northern magmatic belt has peak ages of 110 Ma in central and northern Lhasa and 120 Ma in eastern Tengchong, possibly related to the tectonic transition from Meso‐ and Neo‐Tethyan double subduction to Neo‐Tethyan single subduction. For the southern magmatic belt, the flare‐ups at 100–85 Ma and 65–45 Ma in eastern southern Lhasa indicate obvious juvenile crustal growth, while flare‐ups at 75–45 Ma in western southern Lhasa and Tengchong record ancient crustal reworking. Such flare‐up variations in the southern magmatic belt possibly resulted from asynchronous changes in the Neo‐Tethyan slab dip. The Sanak-Baranof belt includes a series of near-trench plutons that intrude the outboard Chugach-Prince William terrane over ~2200 km along the southern Alaskan margin. We present new petrological, geochronological, and geochemical data for comagmatic microgranitoid enclaves and granitoid rocks from the Crawfish Inlet (ca. 53-47 Ma) and Krestof Island (ca. 52 Ma) plutons on Baranof and Krestof Islands, as well as the Mount Stamy (ca. 51 Ma) and Mount Draper (ca. 54-53 Ma) plutons and associated mafic rocks that intrude the Boundary block at Nunatak Fiord near Yakutat, Alaska, USA. These data suggest that intrusion of the Sanak-Baranof belt plutons is actually a tale of two distinct belts: a western belt with crystallization ages that young systematically from west to east (63-56 Ma) and an eastern belt with crystallization ages ranging from 55 to 47 Ma, but with no clear age progression along the margin. Hf isotope analyses of magmatic zircon from the western Sanak-Baranof belt become increasingly evolved toward the east with εHft = 9.3 ± 0.7 on Sanak Island versus εHft = 5.1 ± 0.5 for the Hive Island pluton in Resurrection Bay. The Hf isotope ratios of eastern Sanak-Baranof belt rocks also vary systematically with age but in reverse, with more evolved ratios in the oldest plutons (εHft = +4.7 ± 0.7) and more primitive ratios in the youngest plutons (εHft = +13.7 ± 0.7). We propose that these findings indicate distinct modes of origin and emplacement histories for the western and eastern segments of the Sanak-Baranof belt, and that the petrogenesis of eastern Sanak-Baranof belt plutons (emplaced subsequent to 57-55 Ma) was associated with an increasing mantle component supplied to the youngest eastern Sanak-Baranof belt magmas. These plutons reveal important information about offshore plate geometries and a dynamic period of plate reorganization ca. 57-55 Ma, but a clearer picture of the tectonic setting that facilitated these Sanak-Baranof belt intrusions cannot be resolved until the magnitude and significance of lateral translation of the Chugach-Prince William terrane are better understood. There are several large intrusions composed of 60–90% leucogranites within Eastern Kazakhstan. The age of intrusions was determined that allows to conclude about the two stages of leucogranite intrusive magmatism: (1) in the Early Permian and (2) in the Early Triassic. Their formation occurred in an post-orogenic or intraplate geodynamic setting. The geochemical features of the leucogranites were considered that allows to conclude about the petrogenetic mechanisms of leucogranite magmas forming. They were formed as a result of partial melting of crustal substrates under the thermal influence of mafic magmas. Mineralogical and U–Pb (ID-TIMS) geochronological studies of garnets from three types of scarn associations of the Khovu-Aksy Ag–Bi–Cu–Ni–Co deposit (Republic of Tuva) are carried out. The U–Pb garnet age estimate (404 ± 2 Ma) is close to the Early Devonian stage of basite and alkaline-basite magmatism identified within the Tuva trough of the Altai-Sayan folded area. The age of the scarn formation and the associated early stage of mineralization of the Khovu-Aksy Ag–Bi–Cu–Ni–Co deposit has been established for the first time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite significant progress in Arctic geological studies, a number of principal questions concerning the Paleozoic collisional events remain unanswered. Therefore, the Taimyr Peninsula, representing the only outcropped high Arctic region where magmatic complexes, formed by Hercynian collision between the Siberian Craton and the Kara Block, are well exposed, is crucially important. In this paper we report new geochemical and geochronological data for intrusions in the poorly studied northeastern part of the Taimyr Peninsula. The obtained results in combination with published data show that supra-subduction magmatism at the southern active margin of the Kara Block continued from ca. 345 to 285 Ma (Early Carboniferous to Early Permian), and was followed by a post-collisional magmatic pulse that affected the whole Taimyr across terrane boundaries at ca. 280 Ma in the Early Permian. After cessation of the post-collisional magmatism at ca. 265 Ma, the Taimyr experienced extension, and voluminous magmatic series associated with a Siberian mantle plume were formed between 251 and 228 Ma during the Triassic. The studied post-collisional and plume-related intrusions of the Northeastern Taimyr are generally classified as evolved high-K I-type granites with adakitic affinity. The latter is a regional feature because the majority of the analyzed plume-related granitoids are geochemically similar to high potassium continental adakites. It is suggested that the adakitic geochemical characteristics of the plume-related granitoids resulted from melting of hydrated mafic lower crustal protoliths and were controlled by the source lithology. Comparison of the new results with data available for adjacent areas allows for correlation of terranes on a regional scale and sheds light on the evolution of the Arctic continental margins in general. In the Early–Middle Paleozoic, the Kara Block was part of a continental terrane that formed at the northern edge of Baltica as a result of Neoproterozoic Timanian orogeny. In the Early Carboniferous, the southern margin of Kara turned into an active margin, while its inferred continuation in the eastern Uralian margin of Baltica remained a passive margin until the Early Permian. This discrepancy can be explained by dextral displacement of Kara relative to Baltica that took place in the Early Carboniferous and was later accommodated by the formation of the Taimyr collisional belt in the course of the Early Permian collision between Kara and Siberia. After collision, the Taimyr was incorporated into the northern Eurasian margin as an uplifted block that experienced surface erosion and supplied clastic material in surrounding basins. Granitic batholiths of the ∼500 Ma Ross Orogen in Antarctica are voluminous in scale, reflecting prolific magmatism along the active early Paleozoic convergent margin of Gondwana. New age and isotopic analysis of zircons from a large suite of Ross granitoids spanning >2,000 km along the orogen provide a wealth of geochronologic, tracer, and inheritance information, enabling us to investigate the pace of magmatism, along‐strike temporal and geochemical trends, magmatic sources, and tectonic modes of convergence. Because granitoids penetrate the crust of the earlier Neoproterozoic rift margin, they also provide insight into the age and composition of the largely ice‐covered East Antarctic craton. Zircon U‐Pb ages from these and other samples indicate that active Ross magmatism spanned 475–590 Ma, much longer than generally regarded. Most samples have heavy zircon δ18O values between 6.5 and 11.5‰ and initial εHf compositions between 0 and −15; their isotopic co‐variations are independent of age, as in other contemporary continental arcs, and reflect largely crustal melt sources. Samples near Shackleton Glacier have distinctly more mantle‐like isotope composition (i.e., radiogenic εHf and low δ18O) and separate two regions with distinctive isotopic properties and inheritance patterns—a more juvenile section of Mesoproterozoic crust underlying the southern TAM and an older, more evolved region of Paleoproterozoic and Archean crust in the central TAM. The isotopic discontinuity separating these regions indicates the presence of a cryptic crustal boundary of Grenvillian or younger age within the East Antarctic shield that may be traceable into the western Laurentian part of the Rodinia supercontinent. The Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic Ross Orogen in Antarctica is a significant part of the active Gondwana‐margin convergent plate boundary stretching from present‐day eastern Australia to Argentina, but it is largely obscured by ice and younger sedimentary cover. The Ross Orogen hosts a prolific and widespread continental‐margin magmatic arc dominated by granitoid intrusions that serve as geochemical "samplers" of upper‐plate rocks with which they interact. We report U‐Pb ages and O‐Hf isotopic compositions in zircons from nearly 40 samples of Ross Orogen granitoids covering a large section of the modern Transantarctic Mountains that reveal patterns in magmatism best explained by variations in composition of the cratonic upper plate. They thus help to identify an otherwise hidden lithospheric boundary separating a region of juvenile Mesoproterozoic crust from evolved Paleoproterozoic and Archean crust that may represent a tectonic suture formed during Rodinia amalgamation. The southern part of the Lower Yangtze Region, located in the area bounded by the Jiangnan and Dabie orogenic belts, is characterized by a complex fault structure and unique magmatism, and is one of the key areas in regional tectonic evolution and magmatism. In this study the authors used a 45-km-long deep reflection seismic profile to study the crustal structure of the southern Lower Yangtze Region. The results show that the crust in the study area is ∼31.5–33.6 km thick, with the Huaining Basin as the thinnest part. A detachment surface at a depth of around 12 km divides the crust into the upper and lower crust, act as a key tectonic decoupling layer. Two sets of thrust nappe faults with opposite tendencies have horizontally developed above the detachment surface, with the Huaining Basin as the centre. A typical wedge-shaped structure has developed below the Qianshan Basin, suggesting that two sets of thrust nappe faults may have formed in the same dynamic system. The reflection patterns of the lower crust on both sides of the profile exhibit a monoclinic feature with opposite tendencies, while the lower part of the Huaining Basin exhibits an arcuate upward-arch feature. A prominent ductile shear zone in the lower crust has developed on the west side of the Huaining Basin, which can provide a favourable channel for magma migration. The results of this study deepen our understanding of the deep structure of the Lower Yangtze Region, and provide important constraint data for research on dynamic mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract A large mantle helium anomaly and separate domains of high heat flow are the predominant manifestations of bimodal magmatic activity in the Milford valley. The mantle helium anomaly (1.9–2.6 R/Ra) covers 270 km2 and is subdivided into two separated domains: a cold shallow groundwater regime and high temperature hydrothermal activity. The zone of anomalous heat flow covers >100 km2 and is also subdivided into two adjacent domains, comprising hydrothermal activity at Roosevelt Hot Springs (RHS) (3–7 W/m2) and conductive heat flow (100–180 mW/m2). While the transfer of heat and mantle helium at RHS are coupled, heat and helium transfer are decoupled in the adjacent cold groundwater regime to the west. Both the mantle helium and geothermal anomalies are attributed to recent mafic‐felsic magmatic intrusions of >400 km3, however, the absence of volcanic eruptions

In the article from the position on the Concept of the Dynamics of the Earth’s Crust Evolution (CDECE) the problems of the origin of volcanoplutonic processes and related endogenous ore formation are considered. It is established that geodynamic forces are created when the Earth rotates around its axis, all global geotectonic processes occur under the influence of these forces. These forces in the face of the Earth spread with certain regularities. Movements of lithospheric masses on the surface of the upper mantle occurs under the influence of these forces. It is known that the geospheres of the Earth have different physical characteristics. Therefore, they react differently to the Earth’s rotation. For this reason, mass shifts occur between the differently characterized geospheres. Because of these displacements between geospheres physical-chemical phase transformations form, where decomposition of mantle matter occurs, which is associated with the increase in the volume of mantle matter, that further, is associated with the formation of primary magma, which is associated with the manifestations of volcanoplutonic processes and earthquakes. These physical and chemical phase transformations theoretically occur in all zones between different geospheres of the Earth. However, the most intensive manifestation of them occurs between the Earth’s crust and upper mantle, associated with the increase in the radius of rotation of the Earth. The speed of movement of lithospheric masses is connected with the regularities of distribution of geodynamic forces, which have differential character of development this is connected with geometrical parameters of the Earth where the directions of movement of lithospheric masses, occur from west to east. In these conditions, the rate of movement in near equatorial zones have a maximum value, and in the direction of the poles reduce to zero. This is due to the fact that the Earth’s radius is located perpendicular to its axis of rotation. Therefore, the velocity of lithospheric masses movement in its equator have maximum values, which in the poles decrease to zero.

Mars features a crustal dichotomy, with its southern hemisphere covered by a thicker basaltic crust than its northern hemisphere. Additionally, the planet displays geologically recent volcanism only in its low latitude regions. Previous giant impact models coupled with simulations of mantle convection have shown that the crustal dichotomy can be explained by post‐impact melt crystallization that emplaced a thick crust in the southern hemisphere. In this study, we show that the depleted residue left behind by the original post‐impact crustal formation can spread laterally, potentially persisting beneath the northern hemisphere to the present‐day. Such a large‐scale mantle province would concurrently explain both the prevalence of long‐term magmatism on Mars and its strong preference for localized equatorial regions. Various theories have been suggested in order to explain its origin. We focus in the present study on a southern giant impact hypothesis. By using numerical models, we study the fate of a magma pond that is created by a giant impact. As this pond cools, a crust is formed on the top, leaving behind a residue at depth. We show that this residue can spread below the crust to the opposite hemisphere of the planet, that is, the northern hemisphere. We show that this causes, additionally to the dichotomy, also a north‐south difference in both the thermal and compositional structure of the interior of Mars. The advantage of our model is that it can concurrently explain the Martian dichotomy and the location of large and small martian volcanoes near the equator. The Paleo-Asian Ocean and Tethyan Ocean were ancient oceans that formed during different time periods. The Central Asian Orogenic Belt and Tethyan Tectonic domains are two large tectonic regions associated with the evolution and closure of these oceans. The editorial highlights various studies on the tectonic and magmatic evolution of these domains, including investigations into volcanic regions, granitoids, tectonic evolution, and oil reservoirs. In this paper, we have synthesized the information derived from more than 20 papers and PhD theses on the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility (AMS) of 19 Variscan granite plutons, spanning the period between 320 Ma and 296 Ma. The AMS data are obtained from 876 sampling sites with more than 7080 AMS measurements and a re-interpretation is proposed. The studied granites exhibit a magnetic susceptibility (Km) ranging from 30 to 10,436 × 10−6 SI units. Most granites typically exhibit Km values below 1000 × 10−6 SI, indicative of paramagnetic behavior. Biotite serves as the main carrier of iron (Fe), emphasizing the reduced conditions prevalent during the formation of granite melts in the Variscan orogeny. The AMS fabrics of the studied granite plutons record the magma strain, expressing the chronologic evolution of the stress field during the orogeny. This chronologic approach highlights the magmatic events between around 330 and 315 Ma, occurring in an extensional regime, in which the Borralha pluton is an example of a suite that recorded this extensional AMS fabric. Plutons with ages between 315 and 305 Ma show AMS fabrics, pointing out their emplacement in a compressional tectonic regime related to the Variscan collision. The plutons, younger than 305 Ma, record AMS fabrics indicating that the tectonic setting for emplacement changes from a wrench regime to an extensional one at the end of the collision stage. This is evident as there is a chronological overlap between the granites that exhibit AMS fabrics indicating extension and the ones that have AMS fabrics indicating a wrench regime. The Huayangchuan U-polymetallic deposit in the Qinling Orogen is a newly verified carbonatite-hosted deposit on the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) in Central China. Granitic magmatism is extensively developed in the Huayangchuan deposit area and is lacking analysis on the reasons for these situations; however, its ages, petrogenesis, and relationship with uranium mineralization are not well constrained. Zircon U–Pb ages for the hornblende-bearing granite porphyry and medium-fine-grained biotite granites in close proximity to carbonatite rocks are 229.8 ± 1.1 and 135.3 ± 0.6 Ma, respectively. High-K calc-alkaline series and weakly peraluminous Triassic hornblende-bearing granite porphyry are slightly enriched in light rare earth elements (LREE) with flat heavy rare earth element (HREE) patterns, enriched in Ba and Sr, and depleted in Nb, Ta, P, and Ti, i.e., geochemical characteristics similar to those of adakite-like rocks. The Early Cretaceous medium-fine-grained biotite granites are characterized by LREE enrichment and flat HREE patterns, which belong to high-K calc-alkaline series, and metaluminous belong to weakly peraluminous I-type granite, with U and large ion lithophile element (LILE) enrichment and high field strength element depletion. The high initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios and enriched Nd (εNd(t) = −10.7 to −9.5 and −19.9 to −18.9, respectively) and Hf (εHf(t) = −21.8 to −13.0 and −30.5 to −19.0, respectively) isotopes revealed that both granitic rocks from the Huayangchuan deposit mainly originated from lower crustal materials, generated by partial melting of the ancient basement materials of the Taihua Group. Triassic hornblende-bearing granite porphyry is significantly different from the mantle origin of the contemporaneous U-mineralization carbonatite. In combination with tectonic evolution, we argue that the Qinling Orogenic Belt was affected by the subduction of the North Mianlian Ocean during the Late Triassic. The ongoing northward subduction of the Yangtze Craton resulted in crustal thickening, forming large-scale Indosinian carbonatites, U-polymetallic mineralization, and contemporaneous intermediate-acid magmatism. Additionally, due to the tectonic system transformation caused by Paleo-Pacific Plate subduction, intracontinental lithosphere extension and lithospheric thinning occurred along the southern NCC margin in the Early Cretaceous. Intense magma underplating of the post-orogeny created a large number of magmatic rocks. The Southwestern Laurentia large igneous province (SWLLIP) comprises voluminous, widespread ca 1.1 Ga magmatism in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The timing and tempo of SWLLIP magmatism and its relationship to other late Mesoproterozoic igneous provinces have been unclear due to difficulties in dating mafic rocks at high precision. New precise U-Pb zircon dates for comagmatic felsic segregations within mafic rocks reveal distinct magmatic episodes at ca. 1098 Ma (represented by massive sills in Death Valley, California, the Grand Canyon, and central Arizona) and ca. 1083 Ma (represented by the Cardenas Basalts in the Grand Canyon and a sill in the Dead Mountains, California). The ca. 1098 Ma magmatic pulse was short-lived, lasting 0.25-0.24 +0.67 m.y., and voluminous and widespread, evidenced by the ≥100 m sills in Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, and central Arizona, consistent with decompression melting of an upwelling mantle plume. The ca. 1083 Ma magmatism may have been generated by a secondary plume pulse or post-plume lithosphere extension. The ca. 1098 Ma pulse of magmatism in southwestern Laurentia occurred ∼2 m.y. prior to an anomalous renewal of voluminous melt generation in the Midcontinent Rift of central Laurentia that is recorded by the ca. 1096 Ma Duluth Complex layered mafic intrusions. Rates of lateral plume spread predicted by mantle plume lubrication theory support a model where a plume derived from the deep mantle impinged near southwestern Laurentia, then spread to thinned Midcontinent Rift lithosphere over ∼2 m.y. to elevate mantle temperatures and generate melt. This geodynamic hypothesis reconciles the close temporal relationships between voluminous magmatism across Laurentia and provides an explanation for that anomalous renewal of high magmatic flux within the protracted magmatic history of the Midcontinent Rift. The Eocene Yulong porphyry copper belt (YPCB) in eastern Tibet contains more than 10 Mt of Cu metal, associated with subvolcanic to volcanic porphyry systems intruding Cenozoic sedimentary basins. Geochemical data analysis shows that all samples belonged to high-K calc-alkaline and shoshonite series with metaluminous–peraluminous characteristics, light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements enrichment, high field strength elements depletion, and share geochemical similarities to adakitic rocks. We have established a spatiotemporal evolution framework through geochronological data analysis, combined with calculated bulk zirconium saturation temperature, calculated crustal thickness and geophysical evidence. We identified three magmatic processes triggered by asthenospheric upwelling and thermal erosion of thickened crust: (1) ultrapotassic magma derived from metasomatized mantle; (2) coeval ultrapotassic melt that promoted the partial melting of eroded lower crust and the generation of high-K adakitic felsic melt; high-K and Mg# adakitic fertile magma was formed by interaction between the eroded sulfide-rich juvenile lower crust-derived melt and mantle peridotite; (3) high-K adakitic fertile magma was derived from sulfide-rich juvenile lower crust, triggered by injecting hydrous ultrapotassic magma into thinned lower crust. The difference between deposit size in the north/south section of Yulong belt may be caused by the temperature of magmatic source and the volume of coeval potassic–ultrapotassic magmatism. Our analysis of the YPCB suggests that magmatism after 175 Ma within Intermontane arc complex of the Canadian Cordillera has high potential for porphyry deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magmatism on continental lithospheres induced by mantle plumes is more complex compared to oceanic intraplate volcanism owing to the heterogeneous nature of continental crustal and lithospheric structures. Substantial evidence points to the deep-oriented Hainan mantle plume beneath the Lei–Qiong region, the southernmost of the South China block. In this study, we present a detailed shear wave velocity model of the crust and uppermost mantle in the Lei–Qiong volcanic region, derived from 3-year seismic data (2016–2018) from 34 stations and the use of the ambient noise tomography method. An evident columnar low-velocity anomaly was imaged in the crust and uppermost mantle beneath the Wushi Sag (WSS), Beibu Gulf, potentially suggesting that the center of either one branch or the entirety of the Hainan mantle plume impacts the crust here. This low-velocity anomaly is overlaid by a local Moho deepening, indicative of underplating beneath the existing crust. The Maanling–Leihuling Volcanic Field (MLVF) in northern Hainan Island, previously considered the center of the hotspot, does not exhibit such distinct velocity anomalies. Instead, subtle lower crustal anomalies beneath the MLVF are linked with the upper mantle low-velocity zone beneath the WSS. Additionally, the high-conductivity bodies beneath the MLVF indicate lateral magma transport. Earthquake swarms and deep-seated seismic events beneath the WSS further support the presence of magmatic processes. This study indicates that in the Lei–Qiong region, the interaction of the continental crust with the mantle plume centered in the WSS results in magma exhibiting both vertical ascent and lateral migration, leading to a dual low-velocity shear wave pattern in the upper crust, which significantly influences the surface volcanic activity. Enriched mid‐ocean ridge basalts (E‐MORB) commonly erupt at mid‐ocean ridges (MOR) and seamounts, but their relationship to "depleted" MORB (D‐MORB) and the processes controlling their magmatic evolution at MORs are not fully understood, hence raising more general questions about magma generation in the mantle. We here explore this conundrum through an investigation of the Masirah ophiolite (southeast Oman), a near‐unique "true" MOR ophiolite. Unlike most (e.g., Tethyan) ophiolites, it was not affected by subduction and is therefore potentially able to provide valuable geological insights into the magmatic evolution of a full section of oceanic crust. Previous work has shown that the igneous crust at Masirah was thin (1.5–2.0 km) and constructed from both D‐ and E‐MORB magmas, concluding that it formed at a slow‐spreading ridge at ∼150 Ma followed by an episode of "Nb‐enriched" magmatism with trace‐element enrichments exceeding E‐MORB during intraplate rifting ∼20 Ma later. We reinvestigate the geology of Masirah and present new field observations, geochemical data and high‐precision U‐Pb ages to constrain the magmatic history of seafloor spreading and off‐axis magmatism. We found that D‐MORB and E‐MORB magmatism at Masirah was synchronous and overlapped in both composition and time with the Nb‐enriched magmatism (no older than 135 Ma). Both types of magmatism were therefore integral in the formation of the Masirah ocean crust. The relationship between D‐MORB and E‐MORB magmatism described here may be applicable to modern MORs more broadly, but is especially prominent at Masirah due to reduced magmatism and hence a weaker crustal filter. Plain Language Summary: The oceanic crust forms approximately two‐thirds of the Earth's surface and is continuously being formed at mid‐ocean ridges. Due to the difficulties involved in accessing oceanic crust directly, especially the deeper stratigraphic levels, the magmatic processes involved in forming the oceanic crust remain poorly understood. Ophiolites, fragments of oceanic lithosphere that were emplaced onto the continent, can offer valuable insights to geologists, but since most ophiolites are thought to have originated in marginal oceanic basins or at the initiation of subduction, a direct comparison remains problematic. In this study, we circumvent this problem by investigating the Masirah Ophiolite, a rare example of a "true" mid‐ocean ridge ophiolite. By combining field observations, geochemistry and geochronology at a level of detail not possible for present‐day oceanic crust, we reconstruct the magmatic evolution of the Masirah paleoridge. We present a more accurate formation age for Masirah and find that magmatism was compositionally variable throughout crustal accretion, with later off‐axis melts becoming more enriched in incompatible trace elements. We propose that the large geochemical variations observed at Masirah may be commonplace at modern mid‐ocean ridges, but that these are often masked due to the typically higher volumes of magmatism that enhance mixing and homogenization. Seafloor spreading is an important cornerstone of the theory of plate tectonics. Asymmetric seafloor spreading and oceanic ridge jumps are common phenomena in this process and play important roles in controlling oceanic crust accretion, regional tectonics and geological geometric boundaries. As the largest marginal sea in the western Pacific, the South China Sea is an ideal laboratory for dissecting the Wilson cycle of small marginal sea-type ocean basins restricted by surrounding blocks and exploring the deep dynamic processes of confined small ocean basins. In recent years, a lot of research has been conducted on the spreading history of the South China Sea and has achieved fruitful results. However, the detailed dynamic mechanisms of asymmetric seafloor spreading and ridge jumps are still unclear. Therefore, this paper summarizes the basic understanding about the dynamic mechanisms of global asymmetric seafloor spreading and ridge jumps and reviews the related research results of asymmetric seafloor spreading and ridge jumps in the South China Sea. Previous studies have basically confirmed that seafloor spreading in the South China Sea started between ~32 and 34 Ma in the east sub-basin and ended at ~15 Ma in the northwest sub-basin, with at least once oceanic ridge jump in the east sub-basin. The current research mainly focuses on the age of the seafloor spreading in the South China Sea and the location, time and stage of the ridge jumps, but there are relatively few studies on high-resolution lithospheric structure across these ridges and the dynamic mechanism of oceanic ridge jumps. Based on the current research progress, we propose that further studies should focus on the lithosphere–asthenosphere scale in the future, suggesting that marine magnetotelluric and Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) surveys should be conducted across the residual oceanic ridges to perform a detailed analysis of the tectonics magmatism in the east sub-basin to gain insights into the dynamic mechanisms of oceanic ridge jumps and asymmetric seafloor spreading, which can promote understanding of the tectonic evolution of the South China Sea and improve the classical plate tectonics theory that was constructed based on the open ocean basins.
