The current magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems, which rely on cables for control and signal transmission, do not fully realize the potential of wearable optically pumped magnetometers (OPM). This study presents a significant advancement in wireless OPM-MEG by reducing magnetization in the electronics and developing a tailored wireless communication protocol. Our protocol effectively eliminates electromagnetic interference, particularly in the critical frequency bands of MEG signals, and accurately synchronizes the acquisition and stimulation channels with the host computer's clock. We have successfully achieved single-channel wireless OPM-MEG measurement and demonstrated its reliability by replicating three well-established experiments: The alpha rhythm, auditory evoked field, and steady-state visual evoked field in the human brain. In the current study we propose a magneto-optical system for registration and analysis of magnetic nano- and microparticles magnetic relaxation. The core of our system is the novel compact magnetometer based on an yttrium-iron garnet film and working at room temperature. The sensor demonstrates sensitivity of 35 pT/√{Hz} at 79 Hz and recovery time less than 100 µs, which allows to register quite fast magnetic relaxations of a low amplitude. All these facts make the system feasible for usage in biological magnetorelaxometry and theranostics. Statistical processing of the relaxation curves allowed us to estimate both amplitudes and relaxation times for various biocompatible magnetic particles at the amount of 100 µg in the test tubes experiments. The system has a great potential of further development for usage in the areas of targeted drug delivery, hyperthermia, magnetic imaging. Being comparatively cheap, the system potentially is of a great interest in the fields of biomedicine and nanomedicine.

Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) developed for magnetoencephalography (MEG) typically operate in the spin-exchange-relaxation-free (SERF) regime and measure a magnetic field component perpendicular to the propagation axis of the optical-pumping photons. The most common type of OPM for MEG employs alkali atoms, e.g. 87 Rb, as the sensing element and one or more lasers for preparation and interrogation of the magnetically sensitive states of the alkali atoms ensemble. The sensitivity of the OPM can be greatly enhanced by operating it in the SERF regime, where the alkali atoms' spin exchange rate is much faster than the Larmor precession frequency. The SERF regime accommodates remnant static magnetic fields up to ±5 nT. However, in the presented work, through simulation and experiment, we demonstrate that multi-axis magnetic signals in the presence of small remnant static magnetic fields, not violating the SERF criteria, can introduce significant error terms in OPM's output signal. We call these deterministic errors cross-axis projection errors (CAPE), where magnetic field components of the MEG signal perpendicular to the nominal sensing axis contribute to the OPM signal giving rise to substantial amplitude and phase errors. Optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are highly sensitive, compact magnetic field sensors, which offer a viable alternative to cryogenic sensors (superconducting quantum interference devices - SQUIDs) for magnetoencephalography (MEG). With the promise of a wearable system that offers lifespan compliance, enables movement during scanning, and provides higher quality data, OPMs could drive a step change in MEG instrumentation. However, this potential can only be realised if background magnetic fields are appropriately controlled, via a combination of optimised passive magnetic screening (i.e. enclosing the system in layers of high-permeability materials), and electromagnetic coils to further null the remnant magnetic field. In this work, we show that even in an OPM-optimised passive shield with extremely low (<2 nT) remnant magnetic field, head movement generates significant artefacts in MEG data that manifest as low-frequency interference. To counter this effect we introduce a magnetic field mapping technique, in which the participant moves their head to sample the background magnetic field using a wearable sensor array; resulting data are compared to a model to derive coefficients representing three uniform magnetic field components and five magnetic field gradient components inside the passive shield. We show that this technique accurately reconstructs the magnitude of known magnetic fields. Moreover, by feeding the obtained coefficients into a bi-planar electromagnetic coil system, we were able to reduce the uniform magnetic field experienced by the array from a magnitude of 1.3±0.3 nT to 0.29±0.07 nT. Most importantly, we show that this field compensation generates a five-fold reduction in motion artefact at 0‒2 Hz, in a visual steady-state evoked response experiment using 6 Hz stimulation. We suggest that this technique could be used in future OPM-MEG experiments to improve the quality of data, especially in paradigms seeking to measure low-frequency oscillations, or in experiments where head movement is encouraged., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest V.S. is the founding director of QuSpin Inc. In the current article, we present the first solid-state sensor feasible for magnetoencephalography (MEG) that works at room temperature. The sensor is a fluxgate magnetometer based on yttrium-iron garnet films (YIGM). In this feasibility study, we prove the concept of usage of the YIGM in terms of MEG by registering a simple brain induced field-the human alpha rhythm. Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are quickly widening the scopes of noninvasive neurophysiological imaging. The possibility of placing these magnetic field sensors on the scalp allows not only to acquire signals from people in movement, but also to reduce the distance between the sensors and the brain, with a consequent gain in the signal-to-noise ratio. These advantages make the technique particularly attractive to characterise sources of brain activity in demanding populations, such as children and patients with epilepsy. However, the technology is currently in an early stage, presenting new design challenges around the optimal sensor arrangement and their complementarity with other techniques as electroencephalography (EEG). In this article, we present an optimal array design strategy focussed on minimising the brain source localisation error. The methodology is based on the Cramér-Rao bound, which provides lower error bounds on the estimation of source parameters regardless of the algorithm used. We utilise this framework to compare whole head OPM arrays with commercially available electro/magnetoencephalography (E/MEG) systems for localising brain signal generators. In addition, we study the complementarity between EEG and OPM-based MEG, and design optimal whole head systems based on OPMs only and a combination of OPMs and EEG electrodes for characterising deep and superficial sources alike. Finally, we show the usefulness of the approach to find the nearly optimal sensor positions minimising the estimation error bound in a given cortical region when a limited number of OPMs are available. Optically-pumped magnetometers constitute a valuable tool for imaging biological magnetic signals without cryogenic cooling. Nowadays, numerous developments are being pursued using alkali-based magnetometers, which have demonstrated excellent sensitivities in the spin-exchange relaxation free (SERF) regime that requires heating to >100 °C. In contrast, metastable helium-4 based magnetometers work at any temperature, which allows a direct contact with the scalp, yielding larger signals and a better patient comfort. However former 4 He magnetometers displayed large noises of >200 fT/Hz 1/2 with 300-Hz bandwidth. We describe here an improved magnetometer reaching a sensitivity better than 50 fT/Hz 1/2 , nearly the photon shot noise limit, with a bandwidth of 2 kHz. Like other zero-field atomic magnetometers, these magnetometers can be operated in closed-loop architecture reaching several hundredths nT of dynamic range. A small array of 4 magnetometers operating in a closed loop has been tested with a successful correction of the cross-talks.

Optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) offer the potential for a step change in magnetoencephalography (MEG) enabling wearable systems that provide improved data quality, accommodate any subject group, allow data capture during movement and potentially reduce cost. However, OPM-MEG is a nascent technology and, to realise its potential, it must be shown to facilitate key neuroscientific measurements, such as the characterisation of brain networks. Networks, and the connectivities that underlie them, have become a core area of neuroscientific investigation, and their importance is underscored by many demonstrations of their disruption in brain disorders. Consequently, a demonstration of network measurements using OPM-MEG would be a significant step forward. Here, we aimed to show that a wearable 50-channel OPM-MEG system enables characterisation of the electrophysiological connectome. To this end, we measured connectivity in the resting state and during a visuo-motor task, using both OPM-MEG and a state-of-the-art 275-channel cryogenic MEG device. Our results show that resting-state connectome matrices from OPM and cryogenic systems exhibit a high degree of similarity, with correlation values >70%. In addition, in task data, similar differences in connectivity between individuals (scanned multiple times) were observed in cryogenic and OPM-MEG data, again demonstrating the fidelity of the OPM-MEG device. Introduction: A magnetic seed marker system (Magseed, Endomagnetics, Cambridge, United Kingdom) is used as a localisation method for non-palpable breast lesions in the United States, Europe, and Hong Kong. It overcomes many limitations of conventional techniques and allows scheduling flexibility. We sought to evaluate its efficacy and safety in the Chinese population., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all Chinese women who underwent magnetic seed marker-guided breast lesion excision from June 2019 to February 2020 at a single institution. Placement success (final target-to-seed distance <10 mm) was evaluated by imaging on the day of surgery. Specimen radiographs and pathology reports were reviewed for magnetic seed markers and target removal. Margin clearance and re-excision rates were analysed., Results: Twenty two magnetic seed markers were placed in 21 patients under sonographic or stereotactic guidance to localise 21 target lesions. One target lesion required two magnetic seed markers for bracketing. There was no migration of nine markers placed 6 to 56 days before the day of surgery. Placement success was achieved in 20 (90.9%) cases. Mean final target-to-seed distance was 3.1 mm. Two out of 21 (9.5%) lesions required alternative localisation due to marker migration ≥10 mm, while 19 (90.5%) lesions underwent successful magnetic seed marker-guided excision. Three of these 19 lesions (15.8%) were excised with therapeutic intent, one of which (33%) required re-excision due to a close margin. All 22 magnetic seed markers were successfully removed. Aim: In order to develop fundamentally new technologies for non-invasive and safer diagnosis of cancer, we aimed to detect non-contact magnetic signals from a malignant tumor in animals treated or not-treated with the ferromagnetic nanocomposite Ferroplat., Materials and Methods: Guerin's carcinoma was used as a model of tumor growth. The biomagnetism of the tumor was evaluated in the dynamics of its growth. Ten days after tumor transplantation, Ferroplat was administered intravenously to half of the animals with the tumor and to half of the control animals. The magnitude of the magnetic signals was determined 1 h and every two days after administration of the nanocomposite using a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device magnetometer of the original design., Results: We have found that the magnetic signals coming from the tumor are significantly higher compared to control tumor-free animals. Intravenous administration of a ferromagnetic nanocomposite (Ferroplat: Fe 3 O 4  + cisplatinum) led to a significant increase of the magnetic signal, especially in the tumor tissue, and inhibition of Guerin's carcinoma growth. Ferromagnetic nanoparticles (32.7 nm) are retained in malignant cells for a longer time than in normal ones., Conclusion: Tumor cells accumulate iron nanoparticles more intensively than normal ones. Nanocomposite Ferroplat can be used for a targeted delivery of cisplatin to malignant cells.

Hallucinogens induce the head-twitch response (HTR), a rapid reciprocal head movement, in mice. Although head twitches are usually identified by direct observation, they can also be assessed using a head-mounted magnet and a magnetometer. Procedures have been developed to automate the analysis of magnetometer recordings by detecting events that match the frequency, duration, and amplitude of the HTR. However, there is considerable variability in the features of head twitches, and behaviors such as jumping have similar characteristics, reducing the reliability of these methods. We have developed an automated method that can detect head twitches unambiguously, without relying on features in the amplitude-time domain. To detect the behavior, events are transformed into a visual representation in the time-frequency domain (a scalogram), deep features are extracted using the pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) ResNet-50, and then the images are classified using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm. These procedures were used to analyze recordings from 237 mice containing 11,312 HTR. After transformation to scalograms, the multistage CNN-SVM approach detected 11,244 (99.4%) of the HTR. The procedures were insensitive to other behaviors, including jumping and seizures. Deep learning based on scalograms can be used to automate HTR detection with robust sensitivity and reliability.

We report a highly compliant process for patterning nanoparticle arrays on micro- and nanomechanical devices. The distinctive step involves the single layer self-assembled nanoparticles on top of released nanomechanical devices. We demonstrate the process by fabricating sizable arrays of nanomechanical devices on silicon-on-insulator substrates, acting as nanomechanical torque magnetometers. Later, the nanoparticles were self-assembled in geometrical shapes on top of the devices by a unique combination of top-down and bottom-up methods. The self-assembled array of nanoparticles successfully showed a magnetic torque signal by magnetic actuation of the magnetometer. This patterning process can be generalized for any shape and for a wide range of nanoparticles on the nanomechanical resonators.

Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) have reached sensitivity levels that make them viable portable alternatives to traditional superconducting technology for magnetoencephalography (MEG). OPMs do not require cryogenic cooling and can therefore be placed directly on the scalp surface. Unlike cryogenic systems, based on a well-characterised fixed arrays essentially linear in applied flux, OPM devices, based on different physical principles, present new modelling challenges. Here, we outline an empirical Bayesian framework that can be used to compare between and optimise sensor arrays. We perturb the sensor geometry (via simulation) and with analytic model comparison methods estimate the true sensor geometry. The width of these perturbation curves allows us to compare different MEG systems. We test this technique using simulated and real data from SQUID and OPM recordings using head-casts and scanner-casts. Finally, we show that given knowledge of underlying brain anatomy, it is possible to estimate the true sensor geometry from the OPM data themselves using a model comparison framework. This implies that the requirement for accurate knowledge of the sensor positions and orientations a priori may be relaxed. A telomere carrying repetitive sequences ends with a single-stranded overhang. The G-rich overhang could fold back and bind in the major groove of its upstream duplex, forming an antiparallel triplex structure. The telomeric triplex has been proposed to function in protecting chromosome ends. However, we lack strategies to mechanically probe the dynamics of a telomeric triplex. Here, we show that the topological dynamics of a telomeric triplex involves 3' overhang binding at the ds/ssDNA junction inferred by DNA mechanics. Assisted by click chemistry and branched polymerase chain reaction, we developed a rescue-rope-strategy for mechanically manipulating an artificial telomeric DNA with a free end. Using single-molecule magnetic tweezers, we identified a rarely forming (5%) telomeric triplex which pauses at an intermediate state upon unzipping the Watson-Crick paired duplex. Our findings revealed that a mechanically stable triplex formed in a telomeric DNA can resist a force of 20 pN for a few seconds in a physiological buffer. We also demonstrated that the rescue-rope-strategy assisted mechanical manipulation can directly rupture the interactions between the third strand and its targeting duplex in a DNA triplex. Objective: The prokinetic action of erythromycin is clinically useful under conditions associated with gastrointestinal hypomotility. Although erythromycin is known to affect the electrogastrogram, no studies have examined the effects that erythromycin has on gastric slow wave magnetic fields., Methods: In this study, gastric slow wave activity was assessed simultaneously using noninvasive magnetogastrogram (MGG), electrogastrogram, and mucosal electromyogram recordings. Recordings were obtained for 30 min prior to and 60 min after intravenous administration of erythromycin at dosages of 3 and 6 mg/kg., Results: MGG recordings showed significant changes in the percentage power distribution of gastric signal after infusion of both 3 and 6 mg/kg erythromycin at t = 1-5 min that persisted for t = 30-40 min after infusion. These changes agree with the changes observed in the electromyogram. We did not observe any statistically significant difference in MGG amplitude before or after injection of either 3 or 6 mg/kg erythromycin. Both 3 and 6 mg/kg erythromycin infusion showed retrograde propagation with a statistically significant decrease in slow wave propagation velocity 11-20 min after infusion. Propagation velocity started returning toward baseline values after approximately 21-30 min for the 3 mg/kg dosage and after 31-40 min for a dosage of 6 mg/kg., Conclusion: Our results showed that the magnetic signatures were sensitive to disruptions in normal slow wave activity induced by pharmacological and prokinetic agents such as erythromycin., Significance: This study shows that repeatable noninvasive bio-electro-magnetic techniques can objectively characterize gastric dysrhythmias and may quantify treatment efficacy in patients with functional gastric disorders.

Purpose: Sentinel lymph node (LN) dissection (sLND) using a magnetometer and superpara-magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) as a tracer was successfully applied in prostate cancer (PCa). The feasibility of sentinel LN (SLN) visualization on MRI after intraprostatic SPION injection has been reported. In the present study, results of preoperative MRI identification of SLNs and the outcome of subsequent intraoperative magnetometer-guided sLND following intraprostatic SPION injection were studied in intermediate- and high-risk PCa., Patients and Methods: A total of 50 intermediate- and high-risk PCa patients (prostate-specific antigen >10 ng/mL and/or Gleason score ≥7) scheduled for radical prostatectomy with magnetometer-guided sLND and extended pelvic LND (eLND), were included. Patients underwent MRI before and one day after intraprostatic SPION injection using T1-, T2-, and T2*-weighted sequences. Diagnostic rate per patient was established. Distribution of SLNs per anatomic region was registered. Diagnostic accuracy of sLND was assessed by using eLND as a reference standard., Results: SPION-MRI identified a total of 890 SLNs (median 17.5; IQR 12-22.5). SLNs could be successfully detected using MRI in all patients (diagnostic rate 100%). Anatomic SLN distribution: external iliac 19.2%, common iliac 16.6%, fossa obturatoria 15.8%, internal iliac 13.8%, presacral 12.1%, perirectal 12.0%, periprostatic 3.7%, perivesical 2.3%, and other regions 4.4%. LN metastases were intraoperatively found in 15 of 50 patients (30%). sLND had a 100% diagnostic rate, 85.7% sensitivity, 97.2% specificity, 92.3% positive predictive value, 94.9% negative predictive value, false negative rate 14.3%, and 2.8% additional diagnostic value (LN metastases only outside the eLND template)., Conclusion: MR scintigraphy after intraprostatic SPION injection provides a roadmap for intraoperative magnetometer-guided SLN detection and can be useful to characterize a reliable lymphadenectomy template. Draining LN from the prostate can be identified in an unexpectedly high number, especially outside the established eLND template. To accurately measure human motion at high-speed, we proposed a simple structure complementary filter, named the Fuzzy Tuned and Second EStimator of the Optimal Quaternion Complementary Filter (FTECF). The FTECF is applicable to inertial and magnetic sensors, which include tri-axis gyroscopes, tri-axis accelerometers, and tri-axis magnetometers. More specifically, the proposed method incorporates three parts, the input quaternion, the reference quaternion, and the fuzzy logic algorithm. At first, the input quaternion was calculated with gyroscopes. Then, the reference quaternion was calculated by applying the Second EStimator of the Optimal Quaternion (ESOQ-2) algorithm on accelerometers and magnetometers. In addition, we added compensation for accelerometers in the ESOQ-2 algorithm so as to eliminate the effects of limb motion acceleration in high-speed human motion measurements. Finally, the fuzzy logic was utilized to calculate the fusion factor for a complementary filter, so as to adaptively fuse the input quaternion with the reference quaternion. Additionally, the overall algorithm design is more simplified than traditional methods. Confirmed by the experiments, using a commercial inertial and magnetic sensors unit and an optical motion capture system, the efficiency of the proposed method was more improved than two well-known methods. The root mean square error (RMSE) of the FTECF was less than 2.2° and the maximum error was less than 5.4°.

We have developed an unobtrusive magnetic-acoustic fluid intake monitoring (MAFIM) system using a conventional stainless-steel roller-ball nipple to measure licking and drinking behavior in animals. Movements of a small permanent magnetic tracer attached to stainless-steel roller balls that operate as a tongue-actuated valve are sensed by a pair of three-axial magnetometers, and transformed into a time-series indicating the status of the ball (up or down), using a Gaussian mixture model based data-driven classifier. The sounds produced by the rise and fall of the roller balls are also recorded and classified to substantiate the magnetic data by an independent modality for a more robust solution. The operation of the magnetic and acoustic sensors is controlled by an embedded system, communicating via Universal Serial Bus (USB) with a custom-designed user interface, running on a PC. The MAFIM system has been tested in vivo with minipigs, accurately measuring various drinking parameters and licking patterns without constraints imposed by current lick monitoring systems, such as nipple access, animal-nipple contact, animal training, and complex parameter settings.

Because of the serological cross-reactivity among the flaviviruses, molecular detection methods, such as reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), play an important role in the recent Zika outbreak. However, due to the limited sensitivity, the detection window of RT-PCR for Zika viremia is only about one week after symptom onset. By combining loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and AC susceptometry, we demonstrate a rapid and homogeneous detection system for the Zika virus oligonucleotide. Streptavidin-magnetic nanoparticles (streptavidin-MNPs) are premixed with LAMP reagents including the analyte and biotinylated primers, and their hydrodynamic volumes are dramatically increased after a successful LAMP reaction. Analyzed by a portable AC susceptometer, the changes of the hydrodynamic volume are probed as Brownian relaxation frequency shifts, which can be used to quantify the Zika virus oligonucleotide. The proposed detection system can recognize 1 aM synthetic Zika virus oligonucleotide in 20% serum with a total assay time of 27min, which can hopefully widen the detection window for Zika viremia and is therefore promising in worldwide Zika fever control., (Copyright © 2016 The Authors. After spinal cord injury (SCI), levels of independence are commonly assessed with standardized clinical assessments. However, such tests do not provide information about the actual extent of upper limb activities or the impact on independence of bi- versus unilateral usage throughout daily life following cervical SCI. The objective of this study was to correlate activity intensity and laterality of upper extremity activity measured by body-fixed inertial measurement units (IMUs) with clinical assessment scores of independence. Limb-use intensity and laterality of activities performed by the upper extremities was measured in 12 subjects with cervical SCI using four IMUs (positioned on both wrists, on the chest, and on one wheel of the wheelchair). Algorithms capable of reliably detecting self-propulsion and arm activity in a clinical environment were applied to rate functional outcome levels, and were related to clinical independence measures during inpatient rehabilitation. Measures of intensity of upper extremity activity during self-propulsion positively correlated (p < 0.05, r = 0.643) with independence measures related to mobility. Clinical measures of laterality were positively correlated (p < 0.01, r = 0.900) with laterality as measured by IMUs during "daily life," and increased laterality was negatively correlated (p < 0.01, r = -0.739) with independence. IMU sensor technology is sensitive in assessing and quantifying upper limb-use intensity and laterality in human cervical SCI. Continuous and objective movement data of distinct daily activities (i.e., mobility and day-to-day activities) can be related to levels of independence. Therefore, IMU sensor technology is suitable not only for monitoring activity levels during rehabilitation (including during clinical trials) but could also be used to assess levels of participation after discharge.

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) affects a significant fraction of the ageing population, causing a high level of morbidity and mortality. Despite its significance, the causes of AF are still not uniquely identified. This, combined with the lack of precise diagnostic and guiding tools, makes the clinical treatment of AF sub-optimal. We identify magnetic induction tomography as the most promising technique for the investigation of the causes of fibrillation and for its clinical practice. We therefore propose a novel optical instrument based on optical atomic magnetometers, fulfilling the requirements for diagnostic mapping of the heart's conductivity. The feasibility of the device is here discussed in view of the final application. Thanks to the potential of atomic magnetometers for miniaturisation and extreme sensitivity at room temperature, a new generation of compact and non-invasive diagnostic instrumentation, with both bedside and intra-operative operation capability, is envisioned. Possible scenarios both in clinical practice and biomedical research are then discussed. The flexibility of the system makes it promising also for application in other fields, such as neurology and oncology.

Simultaneous detection of Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli based on triple-tagging multiplex PCR and electrochemical magneto genosensing on silica magnetic particles is reported. A set of tagging primers were selected for the specific amplification of yfiR (375 bp), hlyA (234 bp) and eaeA (151bp), being one of the primers for each set labelled with fluorescein, biotin and digoxigenin coding for S. enterica, L. monocytogenes and E. coli, respectively. Afterwards, electrochemical magneto genosensing of the bacteria was achieved by using silica magnetic particles as a carrier and three different electrochemical reporters, specific for each pathogen. This method was able to clearly distinguish among the pathogenic bacteria tested within 50 min, with detection limits ranging from 12 to 46 pg μL(-1)., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Tracking human body motions using inertial sensors has become a well-accepted method in ambulatory applications since the subject is not confined to a lab-bounded volume. However, a major drawback is the inability to estimate relative body positions over time because inertial sensor information only allows position tracking through strapdown integration, but does not provide any information about relative positions. In addition, strapdown integration inherently results in drift of the estimated position over time. We propose a novel method in which a permanent magnet combined with 3-D magnetometers and 3-D inertial sensors are used to estimate the global trunk orientation and relative pose of the hand with respect to the trunk. An Extended Kalman Filter is presented to fuse estimates obtained from inertial sensors with magnetic updates such that the position and orientation between the human hand and trunk as well as the global trunk orientation can be estimated robustly. This has been demonstrated in multiple experiments in which various hand tasks were performed. The most complex task in which simultaneous movements of both trunk and hand were performed resulted in an average rms position difference with an optical reference system of 19.7±2.2 mm whereas the relative trunk-hand and global trunk orientation error was 2.3±0.9 and 8.6±8.7 deg respectively.

Background: For intraoperative imaging in operating theaters or preoperative imaging in clinics, compact and economic integration rather than large and expensive equipment is required to coregister structural and functional imaging. However, current technologies, such as those integrating optical and gamma cameras or infrared and fluorescence imaging, involve certain drawbacks, including the radioactive biorisks of nuclear medicine indicators and the inconvenience of conducting measurements in dark environments., Methods: To specifically and magnetically label liver tumors, an anti-alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) reagent was synthesized from biosafe iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with anti-AFP antibody and solved in a phosphate buffered saline solution. In addition, a novel dual-imaging model system integrating an optical camera and magnetic scanning superconducting-quantum-interference device (SQUID) biosusceptometry (SSB) was proposed. The simultaneous coregistration of low-field magnetic images of MNP distributions and optical images of anatomical regions enabled the tumor distribution to be determined easily and in real time. To simulate targeted MNPs within animals, fewer reagents than the injected dose were contained in a microtube as a sample for the phantom test. The phantom test was conducted to examine the system characteristics and the analysis method of dual images. Furthermore, the animal tests were classified into two types, with liver tumors implanted either on the backs or livers of rats. The tumors on the backs were to visually confirm the imaging results of the phantom test, and the tumors on the livers were to simulate real cases in hepatocellular carcinoma people., Results: A phantom test was conducted using the proposed analysis method; favorable contour agreement was shown between the MNP distribution in optical and magnetic images. Consequently, the positioning and discrimination of liver tumors implanted on the backs and livers of rats were verified by conducting in vivo and ex vivo tests. The results of tissue staining verified the feasibility of using this method to determine the distribution of liver tumors., Conclusion: The results of this study indicate the clinical potential of using anti-AFP-mediated MNPs and the dual-imaging model SSB for discriminating and locating tumors.

Micromagnetometers, together with inertial sensors, are widely used for attitude estimation for a wide variety of applications. However, appropriate sensor calibration, which is essential to the accuracy of attitude reconstruction, must be performed in advance. Thus far, many different magnetometer calibration methods have been proposed to compensate for errors such as scale, offset, and nonorthogonality. They have also been used for obviate magnetic errors due to soft and hard iron. However, in order to combine the magnetometer with inertial sensor for attitude reconstruction, alignment difference between the magnetometer and the axes of the inertial sensor must be determined as well. This paper proposes a practical means of sensor error correction by simultaneous consideration of sensor errors, magnetic errors, and alignment difference. We take the summation of the offset and hard iron error as the combined bias and then amalgamate the alignment difference and all the other errors as a transformation matrix. A two-step approach is presented to determine the combined bias and transformation matrix separately. In the first step, the combined bias is determined by finding an optimal ellipsoid that can best fit the sensor readings. In the second step, the intrinsic relationships of the raw sensor readings are explored to estimate the transformation matrix as a homogeneous linear least-squares problem. Singular value decomposition is then applied to estimate both the transformation matrix and magnetic vector. The proposed method is then applied to calibrate our sensor node. Although there is no ground truth for the combined bias and transformation matrix for our node, the consistency of calibration results among different trials and less than 3(°) root mean square error for orientation estimation have been achieved, which illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed sensor calibration method for practical applications.

We present novel solutions to surpass current analytic limitations of Magneto-Optical Surface Plasmon Resonance (MOSPR) assays, concerning both the chip structure and the method for data analysis. The structure of the chip is modified to contain a thin layer of Co-Au alloy instead of successive layers of homogeneous metals, as currently used. This alloy presents improved plasmonic and magnetic properties, yet a structural stability similar to Au-SPR chips, allowing for bioaffinity assays in saline solutions. Analyzing the whole reflectivity curve at multiple angles of incidence instead of the reflectivity value at a single incidence angle provides a high signal-to-noise ratio suitable for detection of minute analyte concentrations. Based on assessment of solutions with known refractive indices as well as of a model biomolecular interaction (i.e. IgG-AntiIgG) we demonstrate that the proposed structure of the MOSPR sensing chip and the procedure of data analysis allows for long-time assessment in liquid media with increased sensitivity over standard SPR analyses., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Inertial and magnetic sensors are valuable for untethered, self-contained human movement analysis. Very recently, complete integration of inertial sensors, magnetic sensors, and processing into single packages, has resulted in miniature, low power devices that could feasibly be employed in an implantable motion capture system. We developed a wearable sensor system based on a commercially available system-in-package inertial and magnetic sensor. We characterized the accuracy of the system in measuring 3-D orientation-with and without magnetometer-based heading compensation-relative to a research grade optical motion capture system. The root mean square error was less than 4° in dynamic and static conditions about all axes. Using four sensors, recording from seven degrees-of-freedom of the upper limb (shoulder, elbow, wrist) was demonstrated in one subject during reaching motions. Very high correlation and low error was found across all joints relative to the optical motion capture system. Findings were similar to previous publications using inertial sensors, but at a fraction of the power consumption and size of the sensors. Such ultra-small, low power sensors provide exciting new avenues for movement monitoring for various movement disorders, movement-based command interfaces for assistive devices, and implementation of kinematic feedback systems for assistive interventions like functional electrical stimulation.

Low cost, compact attitude heading reference systems (AHRS) are now being used to track human body movements in indoor environments by estimation of the 3D orientation of body segments. In many of these systems, heading estimation is achieved by monitoring the strength of the Earth's magnetic field. However, the Earth's magnetic field can be locally distorted due to the proximity of ferrous and/or magnetic objects. Herein, we propose a novel method for accurate 3D orientation estimation using an AHRS, comprised of an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer, under conditions of magnetic field distortion. The system performs online detection and compensation for magnetic disturbances, due to, for example, the presence of ferrous objects. The magnetic distortions are detected by exploiting variations in magnetic dip angle, relative to the gravity vector, and in magnetic strength. We investigate and show the advantages of using both magnetic strength and magnetic dip angle for detecting the presence of magnetic distortions. The correction method is based on a particle filter, which performs the correction using an adaptive cost function and by adapting the variance during particle resampling, so as to place more emphasis on the results of dead reckoning of the gyroscope measurements and less on the magnetometer readings. The proposed method was tested in an indoor environment in the presence of various magnetic distortions and under various accelerations (up to 3 g). In the experiments, the proposed algorithm achieves <2° static peak-to-peak error and <5° dynamic peak-to-peak error, significantly outperforming previous methods.

Clinical scores and motion-capturing gait analysis are today's gold standard for outcome measurement after knee arthroplasty, although they are criticized for bias and their ability to reflect patients' actual quality of life has been questioned. In this context, mobile gait analysis systems have been introduced to overcome some of these limitations. This study used a previously developed mobile gait analysis system comprising three inertial sensor units to evaluate daily activities and sports. The sensors were taped to the lumbosacral junction and the thigh and shank of the affected limb. The annotated raw data was evaluated using our validated proprietary software. Six patients undergoing knee arthroplasty were examined the day before and 12 months after surgery. All patients reported a satisfactory outcome, although four patients still had limitations in their desired activities. In this context, feasible running speed demonstrated a good correlation with reported impairments in sports-related activities. Notably, knee flexion angle while descending stairs and the ability to stop abruptly when running exhibited good correlation with the clinical stability and proprioception of the knee. Moreover, fatigue effects were displayed in some patients. The introduced system appears to be suitable for outcome measurement after knee arthroplasty and has the potential to overcome some of the limitations of stationary gait labs while gathering additional meaningful parameters regarding the force limits of the knee.

We developed a multichannel system based on superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) for magnetoencephalography measurements. Our system consists of 163 fully-integrated SQUID magnetometers, 154 channels and 9 references, and all of the operations are performed inside a magnetically-shielded room. The system exhibits a magnetic field noise spectral density of approximatively 5 fT/Hz(1=2). The presented magnetoencephalography is the first system working in a clinical environment in Italy.

Falls are a serious public health problem and possibly life threatening for people in fall risk groups. We develop an automated fall detection system with wearable motion sensor units fitted to the subjects' body at six different positions. Each unit comprises three tri-axial devices (accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer/compass). Fourteen volunteers perform a standardized set of movements including 20 voluntary falls and 16 activities of daily living (ADLs), resulting in a large dataset with 2520 trials. To reduce the computational complexity of training and testing the classifiers, we focus on the raw data for each sensor in a 4 s time window around the point of peak total acceleration of the waist sensor, and then perform feature extraction and reduction. Most earlier studies on fall detection employ rule-based approaches that rely on simple thresholding of the sensor outputs. We successfully distinguish falls from ADLs using six machine learning techniques (classifiers): the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) classifier, least squares method (LSM), support vector machines (SVM), Bayesian decision making (BDM), dynamic time warping (DTW), and artificial neural networks (ANNs). We compare the performance and the computational complexity of the classifiers and achieve the best results with the k-NN classifier and LSM, with sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy all above 99%. These classifiers also have acceptable computational requirements for training and testing. Our approach would be applicable in real-world scenarios where data records of indeterminate length, containing multiple activities in sequence, are recorded.

We present in vivo images of the human brain acquired with an ultralow field MRI (ULFMRI) system operating at a magnetic field B0 ~ 130 μT. The system features prepolarization of the proton spins at Bp ~ 80 mT and detection of the NMR signals with a superconducting, second-derivative gradiometer inductively coupled to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). We report measurements of the longitudinal relaxation time T1 of brain tissue, blood, and scalp fat at B0 and Bp, and cerebrospinal fluid at B0. We use these T1 values to construct inversion recovery sequences that we combine with Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill echo trains to obtain images in which one species can be nulled and another species emphasized. In particular, we show an image in which only blood is visible. Such techniques greatly enhance the already high intrinsic T1 contrast obtainable at ULF. We further present 2D images of T1 and the transverse relaxation time T2 of the brain and show that, as expected at ULF, they exhibit similar contrast. Applications of brain ULFMRI include integration with systems for magnetoencephalography. More generally, these techniques may be applicable, for example, to the imaging of tumors without the need for a contrast agent and to modalities recently demonstrated with T1ρ contrast imaging (T1 in the rotating frame) at fields of 1.5 T and above.

We present a signal processing system with virtual instrumentation of a MEMS sensor to detect magnetic flux density for biomedical applications. This system consists of a magnetic field sensor, electronic components implemented on a printed circuit board (PCB), a data acquisition (DAQ) card, and a virtual instrument. It allows the development of a semi-portable prototype with the capacity to filter small electromagnetic interference signals through digital signal processing. The virtual instrument includes an algorithm to implement different configurations of infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. The PCB contains a precision instrumentation amplifier, a demodulator, a low-pass filter (LPF) and a buffer with operational amplifier. The proposed prototype is used for real-time non-invasive monitoring of magnetic flux density in the thoracic cage of rats. The response of the rat respiratory magnetogram displays a similar behavior as the rat electromyogram (EMG).

Human movement analysis is a field of wide interest since it enables the assessment of a large variety of variables related to quality of life. Human movement can be accurately evaluated through Inertial Measurement Units (IMU), which are wearable and comfortable devices with long battery life. The IMU's movement signals might be, on the one hand, stored in a digital support, in which an analysis is performed a posteriori. On the other hand, the signal analysis might take place in the same IMU at the same time as the signal acquisition through online classifiers. The new sensor system presented in this paper is designed for both collecting movement signals and analyzing them in real-time. This system is a flexible platform useful for collecting data via a triaxial accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer, with the possibility to incorporate other information sources in real-time. A µSD card can store all inertial data and a Bluetooth module is able to send information to other external devices and receive data from other sources. The system presented is being used in the real-time detection and analysis of Parkinson's disease symptoms, in gait analysis, and in a fall detection system.

Ellipsoid fitting algorithms are widely used to calibrate Magnetic Angular Rate and Gravity (MARG) sensors. These algorithms are based on the minimization of an error function that optimizes the parameters of a mathematical sensor model that is subsequently applied to calibrate the raw data. The convergence of this kind of algorithms to a correct solution is very sensitive to input data. Input calibration datasets must be properly distributed in space so data can be accurately fitted to the theoretical ellipsoid model. Gathering a well distributed set is not an easy task as it is difficult for the operator carrying out the maneuvers to keep a visual record of all the positions that have already been covered, as well as the remaining ones. It would be then desirable to have a system that gives feedback to the operator when the dataset is ready, or to enable the calibration process in auto-calibrated systems. In this work, we propose two different algorithms that analyze the goodness of the distributions by computing four different indicators. The first approach is based on a thresholding algorithm that uses only one indicator as its input and the second one is based on a Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) that estimates the calibration error for a given calibration set using a weighted combination of two indicators. Very accurate classification between valid and invalid datasets is achieved with average Area Under Curve (AUC) of up to 0:98.

Ultrasound, magnetic fields, and optical techniques have been explored for clinical diagnosis and therapy. However, these techniques have limitations. In this study, we constructed and characterized a transducer to magnetically and ultrasonically investigate samples labeled with magnetic particles. The transducer is a hybrid system consisting of an ac biosusceptometer (ACB) and an ultrasonic transducer. The basic operation principle consisted of measuring the magnetization and microvibrations of ferromagnetic particles (37 and 70 μm) mixed in yogurt and excited by an external alternating magnetic field generated by the ACB's excitation coils. The vibration of the ferromagnetic particles was measured in phantoms using a Doppler ultrasonic transducer; we verified the sensitivity to detecting the vibrations at low concentrations of ferromagnetic material (~1%). The responses of the susceptometer and Doppler ultrasound linearly depended on the voltage level applied to the magnetizing coils at low ferromagnetic particle concentrations (⩽ 5%). We also conducted a repeatability test on the prototype, which indicated a deviation of 0.94% and 0.25% in the Doppler and susceptometric measurements, respectively. We can conclude that the hybrid transducer technique has potential clinical applications.

A novel magnetic field sensor using tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) interacting with magnetic fluid is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The TFBG is surrounded by magnetic fluid whose complex refractive index changes with external magnetic field. The guiding properties of cladding modes excited by the TFBG are therefore modulated by the external magnetic field. As a result, the magnetic field strength measurement is successfully achieved within a range up to 196 Gauss by monitoring extinction ratio of cladding mode resonance. Furthermore, temperature variation can be obtained simultaneously from the wavelength shift of the TFBG transmission spectrum.

Movement of piston inside a cylinder has many applications in industries and measurement of its displacement inside the cylinder is very much important to study its operation and control. In the present paper a non contact type displacement measurement technique of a piston made of magnetic material inside a cylinder has been proposed. In this technique, the difference of inductances of two identical coils wound outside a cylinder due to movement of piston inside it has been found to be linearly related with the displacement. A modified differential inductance measurement circuit has been designed to develop the proposed displacement transducer. The design of the circuit along with principle of operation has been described in the paper. The operation of the proposed circuit has been experimentally studied and the experimental results are reported in the paper. Quantum magnetometers based on optical pumping can achieve sensitivity as high as what SQUID-based devices can attain. In this paper, we discuss the principle of operation and the optimal design of an optically pumped quantum magnetometer. The ultimate intrinsic sensitivity is calculated showing that optimal performance of the magnetometer is attained with an optical pump power of 20 μW and an operation temperature of 48°C. Results show that the ultimate intrinsic sensitivity of the quantum magnetometer that can be achieved is 327 fT/Hz(½) over a bandwidth of 26 Hz and that this sensitivity drops to 130 pT/Hz(½) in the presence of environmental noise. The quantum magnetometer is shown to be capable of detecting a sinusoidal magnetic field of amplitude as low as 15 pT oscillating at 25 Hz.

A novel, integrated lysis and immunoassay methodology and system for intracellular protein measurement are described. The method uses paramagnetic particles both as a lysis agent and assay label resulting in a rapid test requiring minimal operator intervention, the test being homogeneous and completed in less than 10 min. A design study highlights the critical features of the magnetic detection system used to quantify the paramagnetic particles and a novel frequency-locked loop-based magnetometer is presented. A study of paramagnetic particle enhanced lysis demonstrates that the technique is more than twice as efficient at releasing intracellular protein as ultrasonic lysis alone. Results are presented for measurements of intracellular prostate specific antigen in an LNCAP cell line. This model was selected to demonstrate the rapidity and efficiency of intracellular protein quantification. It was shown that, on average, LNCAP cells contained 0.43 fg of prostate specific antigen. This system promises an attractive solution for applications that require a rapid determination of intracellular proteins.

High-resolution, real-time data obtained by human motion tracking systems can be used for gait analysis, which helps better understanding the cause of many diseases for more effective treatments, such as rehabilitation for outpatients or recovery from lost motor functions after a stroke. In order to achieve real-time ambulatory human motion tracking with low-cost MARG (magnetic, angular rate, and gravity) sensors, a computationally efficient and robust algorithm for orientation estimation is critical. This paper presents an analytically derived method for an adaptive-gain complementary filter based on the convergence rate from the Gauss-Newton optimization algorithm (GNA) and the divergence rate from the gyroscope, which is referred as adaptive-gain orientation filter (AGOF) in this paper. The AGOF has the advantages of one iteration calculation to reduce the computing load and accurate estimation of gyroscope measurement error. Moreover, for handling magnetic distortions especially in indoor environments and movements with excessive acceleration, adaptive measurement vectors and a reference vector for earth's magnetic field selection schemes are introduced to help the GNA find more accurate direction of gyroscope error. The features of this approach include the accurate estimation of the gyroscope bias to correct the instantaneous gyroscope measurements and robust estimation in conditions of fast motions and magnetic distortions. Experimental results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed method, which shows better accuracy of orientation estimation than several well-known methods.

We compare the performance of two methods for the synchronization of the atomic spins in optically pumped magnetometers: intensity modulation of the pump light and the classical M(x) method using B(1) field modulation. Both techniques use the same set-up and measure the resulting features of the light after passing a micro-fabricated Cs cell. The intensity-modulated pumping shows several advantages: better noise-limited magnetic field sensitivity, misalignment between pumping and spin synchronization is excluded, and magnetometer arrays without any cross-talk can be easily set up.

Integrated CMOS Hall sensors have been widely used to measure magnetic fields. However, they are difficult to work with in a low magnetic field environment due to their low sensitivity and large offset. This paper describes a highly sensitive digital Hall sensor fabricated in 0.18 μm high voltage CMOS technology for low field applications. The sensor consists of a switched cross-shaped Hall plate and a novel signal conditioner. It effectively eliminates offset and low frequency 1/f noise by applying a dynamic quadrature offset cancellation technique. The measured results show the optimal Hall plate achieves a high current related sensitivity of about 310 V/AT. The whole sensor has a remarkable ability to measure a minimum ± 2 mT magnetic field and output a digital Hall signal in a wide temperature range from -40 °C to 120 °C.

Sensing biological agents at the genomic level, while enhancing the response time for biodetection over commonly used, optics-based techniques such as nucleic acid microarrays or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), is an important criterion for new biosensors. Here, we describe the successful detection of a 35-base, single-strand nucleic acid target by Hall-based magnetic transduction as a mimic for pathogenic DNA target detection. The detection platform has low background, large signal amplification following target binding and can discriminate a single, 350 nm superparamagnetic bead labeled with DNA. Detection of the target sequence was demonstrated at 364 pM (<2 target DNA strands per bead) target DNA in the presence of 36 μM nontarget (noncomplementary) DNA (<10 ppm target DNA) using optical microscopy detection on a GaAs Hall mimic. The use of Hall magnetometers as magnetic transduction biosensors holds promise for multiplexing applications that can greatly improve point-of-care (POC) diagnostics and subsequent medical care.

Occlusion is an important factor that affects chewing. Unilateral posterior crossbites (UPXBs) have been reported to be one of the most prevalent malocclusions in the primary dentition and patients with UPXBs show abnormal condylar motion on the crossbite side in the mediolateral direction during mastication. The aims of this study were to investigate the characteristics of common chewing cycles in the primary dentition in children with UPXBs, when chewing gum on the UPXB side and on the non-UPXB side, and to compare the average chewing pattern with a group of children with a normal buccal relationship. Twenty children in the primary dentition with a UPXB (6 boys, mean age 5.3 ± 1.2 years, and 14 girls, 4.8 ± 1.3 years of age; 9 with a left and 11 with a right UPXB) and 10 children with a normal occlusion were randomly selected. Chewing movements were recorded with the Sirognathograph computer analysing system (COSIG II). All children were asked to chew gum on both sides. The chewing patterns were averaged and analysed in two projection planes and compared using a Student's t-test with respect to the relationship between chewing pattern and occlusion. Significance was set at P ≤ 0.05. Children with a UPXB showed a difference between the chewing pattern on the UPXB and non-UPXB sides. Greater lateral deviation in the chewing cycle was observed on the working side when chewing on the non-UPXB side. The closing angle was found to be more pronounced towards the non-working side when chewing on the UPXB side and the time spent in maximal intercuspation showed reduced values when chewing on the same side. Children with a UPXB opened their mouths wider and showed greater chewing cycles in the sagittal and horizontal projection planes while chewing on the UPXB side and also in the frontal projection while chewing on both the UPXB and the non-UPXB sides in comparison with the control group, P ≤ 0.05. Children with a UPXB produced chewing cycles with a shorter rest position and more frequently in a reverse direction when chewing on the UPXB side in comparison with children with a normal occlusion and with the non-UPXB side. Based on the results of this study, early treatment is recommended to normalize the masticatory chewing cycle pattern to ensure normal growth and development of the orofacial system.

In this paper, we give an overview of the research on fluxgate magnetometers carried out in Spain. In particular we focus in the development of the planar-type instruments. We summarize the fabrication processes and signal processing developments as well as their use in complex systems and space.
