Animal manure pollution constitutes a significant environmental issue, particularly in areas with intensive livestock activities. Manure, due to its various pollution loads such as nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, and pathogens, can have adverse effects on soil, water resources, and air quality. Among manure management practices, sustainable methods such as composting, biogas production, and advanced treatment techniques stand out. These methods offer effective solutions for reducing the environmental impact of manure, while also holding the potential to be valued as valuable resources for agriculture and energy production. The growth in the global population along with urbanization has intensified the demand in commerce, industry, and agriculture sectors. This need to satisfy the supply-demand dynamics has led to increased production activities, subsequently giving rise to significant waste management challenges. This review examines the environmental impacts of pollution originating from animal manure, current management strategies, and research developments (R&D) in this field.

Open manure storage contributes to the release of ammonia (NH3) into the atmosphere. Tank floating covers represent an effective technique to reduce NH3 emissions and biochar has been gain attention as a floating cover and as manure additive. Nevertheless, the mechanisms involved in the process still need to be elucidated since they are influenced by the biochar specific properties, application methods and dose. This work aims to study: (i) the biochar adsorption performances in an NH3 aqueous solution under conditions relevant to manure storage and (ii) the effect of different biochar application methods and dosage on NH3 emissions from buffalo digestate storage. The results show that a 43% reduction in NH3 emissions can be achieved by using biochar as a floating cover of 2 cm rather than as an additive. Moreover, the results show that the biochar produced at 550 °C acts as an adsorbent material for both NH4+ and NH3, by being adsorbed on the biochar surface in the form of NH4+ after H+ abstraction from the acid groups. A minimum cover height of 2 cm is required to give compactness and provide an additional resistance to the gas transfer, which is even more relevant than the adsorption in reducing NH3 emissions. Mixed integer linear programming (MILP) is known as a type of programming that can combine continuous variables, integer variables, and (0-1) variables in the same algorithm and generate fitting results for the data. Using this technique, it is possible to model and solve complex problems in many different fields such as economics, biology, engineering, etc. In the present study, a regional planning model was developed using MILP technique for the conversion of manure from dairy and beef cattle into biogas and electrical energy. For this regional planning study, considering the locations of future facilities, data on dairy and beef cattle in the Isparta province of Türkiye were used. According to the model written and solution outputs, to utilize all manure obtained from dairy and beef cattles in Isparta, 5 biogas plants with a total manure processing capacity of approximately 522,000 tons should be built in different districts. It is possible to produce a total of approximately 21,000,000 m3 of biogas and 38,500 MW of electricity per year in these biogas plants. In order to reduce odor emissions and surface water pollution while storing manure in field heaps near a barn, there is a challenge in properly designing manure-storage areas. Therefore, it is important to assess what solutions and conditions, considering environmental requirements, should be considered when storing manure in field heaps. The goal of the research is to determine the impact of various factors on the risk of nutrient leaching, soil, and gas emissions from solid manure heaps, considering climatic factors in the environment. Through various scientific studies, a manure pile model has been developed and evaluated for its impact on the risk of potential leaching and odor emissions (using hyperspectral gas emission analysis mass flow method) from manure and the dynamics of the 0–80 cm soil layer properties (nitrate (N-NO3) and nitrite (N-NO2), ammonia (NH3), mineral, and total N). Based on the research results, requirements for manure management and storage during the prohibited fertilization period were established, considering the requirements for nitrates from agricultural sources in Lithuania. An optimal new manure heap model has been identified—a layer of not less than 20 cm of compacted straw (density 150–200 kg m−3) or a 10 cm layer of peat for absorbing manure slurries is formed on the soil surface, the manure heap is surrounded by an earth embankment not less than 30 cm high, the manure heap is covered with a layer of finely chopped straw not less than 10 cm thick, or 5 cm of sawdust, or 5 cm of peat. The manure is stored in the heap for 6–12 months. Following the research results, requirements for manure management and storage during the prohibited fertilization period were established, considering the requirements for nitrates from agricultural sources in Lithuania, applicable to the northern part of the temperate climate zone and applying similar requirements to the relevant countries. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a promising technology for wet manure treatment by converting animal manure into valuable fuels, materials, and chemicals. Among other HTC process parameters, the temperature influences HTC products the most. As various animal manures have different compositions, it is not certain how the HTC temperature influences the hydrochar and HTC process liquid. To evaluate the temperature's effect on HTC, three different manures (poultry, swine, and dairy) were hydrothermally carbonized at three different temperatures (180, 220, and 260 °C), and solid and liquid products were characterized for their morphology, elemental compositions, and ions. The carbon contents of the hydrochar reached as high as 38.98 ± 0.36% and 40.05 ± 0.57% for poultry and swine manure, respectively, when these manures were treated at 260 °C. Ammonium showed an around 30% increase in poultry manure hydrochar with the increase in the HTC temperature. In contrast, in swine manure, it decreased by around 80%, and in dairy manure, the HTC temperature did not have any remarkable effect on the ammonium content. The process liquids from HTC of dairy manure at 220 °C showed the most balanced distribution of different ions, with 4970 ± 673 ppm of sodium, 4354 ± 437 ppm of ammonium, 2766 ± 417 ppm of potassium, 978 ± 82 ppm of magnesium, 953 ± 143 ppm of calcium, 3607 ± 16 ppm of chloride, and 39 ± 7 ppm of phosphate. These results emphasize the manure-specific effects of the HTC temperature on both solid and liquid products, indicating the need for optimized strategies to enhance HTC processes for various types of animal manures. To perform the calculations of the coulombic efficiency, areal and volumetric power densities generated by microbial fuel cells (MFCs), several procedures should be accomplished; this necessitates long period and efforts, beside the probability of committing errors. This article aims at developing a tool to support users, engineers, and specialists in performing these computations by developing a desktop software that can run on laptops and computers. A mathematical model was developed to perform the calculations. Next, a flowchart was generated, and the mathematical model was incorporated in the flowchart. Then, Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9.0 Service Pack 2.0 was implemented to configure the software by combining the flowchart, mathematical model, and interface creation. Data were obtained from government associations, wastewater treatment plants, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and literature. The data obtained for performing the calculations in the traditional way were utilized to generate output data which were matched with the output data obtained from the software. The results of both the traditional method and the program were congruous. The software is able to calculate the coulombic efficiency, area and volumetric energy density of MFCs by processing various feedstocks such as livestock manure and wastewater. Scalable, low-cost biofuel and biochemical production can accelerate progress on the path to a more circular carbon economy and reduced dependence on crude oil. Rather than producing a single fuel product, lignocellulosic biorefineries have the potential to serve as hubs for the production of fuels, production of petrochemical replacements, and treatment of high-moisture organic waste. A detailed techno-economic analysis and life-cycle greenhouse gas assessment are developed to explore the cost and emission impacts of integrated corn stover-to-ethanol biorefineries that incorporate both codigestion of organic wastes and different strategies for utilizing biogas, including onsite energy generation, upgrading to bio-compressed natural gas (bioCNG), conversion to poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) bioplastic, and conversion to single-cell protein (SCP). We find that codigesting manure or a combination of manure and food waste alongside process wastewater can reduce the biorefinery's total costs per metric ton of CO2 equivalent mitigated by half or more. Upgrading biogas to bioCNG is the most cost-effective climate mitigation strategy, while upgrading biogas to PHB or SCP is competitive with combusting biogas onsite.

The emission factor method (Tier 1) recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is commonly used to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock and poultry farms. However, the estimation accuracy may vary due to practical differences in manure management across China. The objectives of this study were to estimate the direct and indirect nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from dairy manure management between 1990 and 2021 in China and characterize its spatial and temporal variations following IPCC guideline Tier 2. The N2O emission factor (EF) of dairy cow manure management systems was determined at the national level and regional level as well. The results showed that the national cumulative N2O emission of manure management from 1990 to 2021 was 113.1million tons of CO2 equivalent, ranging from 90.3 to 135.9 million tons with an uncertainty of ±20.2%. The annual EF was 0.021 kg N2O-N (kg N)−1 for total emissions, while it was 0.014 kg N2O-N (kg N)−1 for direct emissions. The proportions of N2O emissions in North China, Northeast China, East China, Central and Southern China, Southwest China and Northwest China were 32.3%, 18.6%, 11.4%, 5.8%, 6.1% and 25.8%, respectively. In addition, N2O emissions varied among farms in different scales. The respective proportions of total N2O emissions from small-scale and large-scale farms were 64.8% and 35.2% in the past three decades. With the improvement in farm management and milk production efficiency, the N2O emissions per unit mass of milk decreased from 0.77 × 10−3 kg to 0.48 × 10−3 kg in 1990–2021. This study may provide important insights into compiling a GHG emission inventory and developing GHG emission reduction strategies for the dairy farming system in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ammonia (NH3) emissions from livestock production contribute to environmental pollution. To address this challenge, the European Union (EU) National Emission Reduction Commitments Directive 2016/2284 (NECD) sets NH3 reduction targets for EU member states. In order to achieve these targets, several strategies have been evaluated under Irish conditions. A compilation of emission factors (EFs) from studies which evaluated these strategies is necessary to assess their effectiveness. This paper reports NH3 EFs from cattle production under Irish conditions. The results from the review show that the mean EFs from the deposition of dung, urine and urea applied to urine patches on grasslands were 4%, 9% and 8% total nitrogen (TN), respectively. EFs from the application of urea to urine patches were reduced by 28% after the addition of the urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) to urea. The mean EF of 28% TN reported for urea fertiliser was almost 7 times higher than calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN). The inclusion of urease inhibitors with urea fertilisation on grassland led to EF reduction of up to 86%. The mean EFs from cattle houses, concrete yards, slurry storage pits and slurry landspreading were approximately 13%, 35%, 60% and 59% total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN), respectively. The most effective NH3 abatement strategies for concrete yards and slurry storage were immediate cleaning of concrete floors (up to 89% reduction) after excreta deposition and the application of chemical amendments (sulphuric acid, acetic acid, alum and ferric chloride) to slurry in storage pits (up to 98% reduction), respectively. Low-emission spreading strategies and slurry acidification were effective at abating EFs after slurry application to land.

Reducing and managing carbon emissions has become a critical global environmental imperative due to the adverse impacts of GHGs. Unlike previous reviews that focused on resource recovery, this work provides an unique insight of transformation from resource-oriented manure treatment to integration of resource recovery with pollution reduction, carbon accounting and trading, focusing on the sustainable development of manure management system. Considering the importance of accounting methodologies for carbon emission and trading system toward carbon neutrality society, suggestions and strategies including attaching high importance to the development of more accuracy accounting methodologies and more practical GHG emission reduction methodologies are given in this paper. This work directs the establishment of carbon reduction methodologies and the formulation of governmental policies for livestock and poultry manure management system in China.

Abstract Background Poorly managed animal faecal waste can result in detrimental environmental and public health implications. Limiting human exposure to animal waste through Animal inclusive Water Sanitation and Hygiene (A-WASH) strategies is imperative to improve public health in livestock keeping households but has received little attention to date. A small number of A-WASH interventions have previously been identified through a systematic review by another research team, and published in 2017. To inform intervention design with the most up-to-date information, a scoping study was conducted to map the existing evidence for A-WASH in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) emerging since the previous review. Methods This review followed PRISMA guidelines to identify interventions in SSA published between January 2016 to October 2022. Databases searched included PubMed, PMC Europe, CabDirect and Web of Science. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they were written in English and documented interventions limiting human contact with animal faecal material in the SSA context. Key data extracted included: the intervention itself, its target population, cost, measure of effectiveness, quantification of effect, assessment of success, acceptability and limitations. These data were synthesized into a narrative, structured around the intervention type. Findings Eight eligible articles were identified. Interventions to reduce human exposure to animal faecal matter were conducted in combination with ‘standard’ human-centric WASH practices. Identified interventions included the management of human-animal co-habitation, educational programs and the creation of child-safe spaces. No novel A-WASH interventions were identified in this review, beyond those identified by the review in 2017. Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) were used to evaluate six of the eight identified interventions, but as effect was evaluated through various measures, the ability to formally compare efficacy of interventions is lacking. Conclusion This study indicates that the number of A-WASH studies in SSA is increasing and the use of RCTs suggests a strong desire to create high-quality evidence within this field. There is a need for standardisation of effect measures to enable meta-analyses to be conducted to better understand intervention effectiveness. Evaluation of scalability and sustainability of interventions is still lacking in A – WASH research.

● Livestock is major greenhouse gas source in agriculture in China. ● Greenhouse gas emissions in livestock shows an upward trend during 1994 to 2014. ● Main mitigation options are improving productivity, feed quality and manure recycling. ● Strengthening monitoring and standards is necessary for capacity building. Animal husbandry is a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in agriculture. Mitigating the emissions from the livestock sector is vital for green development of agriculture in China. Based on National Communication on Climate Change of United Nations, this study aims to investigate the characteristics of GHG emissions of animal husbandry during 1994 to 2014, introduce major emission reduction technologies and their effectiveness, and investigate options for emission reduction for the livestock sector in China. It proposes that control of pollution and carbon emissions can be realized through increased animal productivity, improved feed quality and recycling of animal manure. This paper thus concludes with suggestions of green and low-carbon development of animal husbandry, including the research and development of new technology for emission reduction and carbon sequestration of the livestock sector, enhancement of monitoring and evaluation, and establishment of emission reduction and carbon sequestration standards.

Manure from animal production is commonly spread on agricultural soil as an organic fertiliser to provide macro and trace elements to crops. However, some trace elements can accumulate in the soil and become toxic to plants and microorganisms. These elements include copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), which can be applied in large quantities when pig manure is spread. The feeding strategy and manure management (e.g. through treatment chains) are two mechanisms identified to better control the use of these elements, but their fate from the feed to the soil in pig production remains poorly documented. Better understanding the fate of Cu and Zn, as well as that of other trace and macro elements, along the feed – excreta – waste chain is required to develop alternative ways to reduce their environmental impacts. This dataset provides insight into the composition (Cu, Zn and other trace and macro elements) of organic products along two contrasting manure management chains: (1) only storage or (2) in-building separation, anaerobic digestion (AD) of solids, and digestate drying. Feed, raw slurry, liquid and solid phases after separation of the manure and AD products were sampled and then analysed to measure their total compound contents.

Emission quantification from the agricultural sector, and especially from livestock manure management, is relevant for assessing mitigation strategies and for inventory purposes. There are different direct techniques used to monitor emissions from quiescent surfaces. Common techniques include the closed static chamber and the open dynamic chamber. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare different direct methods, two dynamic hoods and one static hood, for monitoring NH3 and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (N2O, CO2, and CH4) from different emission sources. These sources are ammonia solutions and different by-products of manure (compost, liquid fraction of digestate, and solid fraction of pig slurry). The use of dynamic hoods, despite their differences in size, operation, and applied air flux, presents comparable emission rates for all emissions and compounds assayed. These rates are always higher than those obtained using static hoods. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of dynamic hoods is a valuable technique for refining the indirect estimation of emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Korea is currently developing country-specific emission factors to support the 2050 zero-carbon campaign. Dairy cattle represent one of the largest livestock industries in Korea, and the industry is estimated to continue increasing because of an increase in milk demand. However, country-specific emission factors for dairy cattle are currently only available for calculating methane (CH4) emissions from enteric fermentation. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate CH4 and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from sawdust-bedded barn in dairy cow and steer, as well as dairy cattle manure composting lots. The greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes were quantified using the open-chamber method and gas chromatography. CH4 fluxes from steer, dairy cow, and manure compost were 27.88 ± 5.84, 36.12 ± 10.85, and 259.44 ± 61.78 µg/head/s, respectively. N2O fluxes from steer, dairy cow, and manure compost were 14.04 ± 1.27, 4.11 ± 1.57, and 3.97 ± 1.08 µg/head/s, respectively. The result of this study can be used to construct country-specific data for GHG emissions from manure management. Thus, the application of mitigation strategies can be prioritized based on the GHG profile and targeted source.

Livestock digestate provides nutrients and organic matter to the soil while increasing agricultural sustainability. Nevertheless, nitrogen (N) losses due to the nutrient surplus in regions characterized by intensive animal farming activities still represent an unsolved issue. For this purpose, digestate needs proper treatment and management to avoid N losses in the environment. In the livestock farming context, anaerobic digestion (AD) can be accompanied by an ammonia stripping (AS) process for N recovery. This paper aims to investigate the feasibility AS prior to and after AD of the manure, focusing on two different livestock farms, representative of dairy cattle and pig breeding in southern Italy. AS was performed at a lab scale by injecting microbubbles of air, which allowed the pH to increase, and thus the removal of ammonia. The results show that treating a dairy raw slurry with high intermediate alkalinity (IA) (6707 mg CaCO3 L−1) with AS may not be convenient in terms of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) reduction. As a matter of fact, the loss of buffering capacity during the stripping process resulted in a pH never exceeding the value of 9, which could not promote free ammonia volatilization, whereas integrating AD with AS allowed us to obtain a 34% higher TAN reduction under the same stripping conditions at a temperature (T) of 38 °C and a gas-to-liquid ratio (G/L) of 1:1. Therefore, the AS removal efficiency strongly depends on the characteristics (mainly IA) of the treated matrix. High IA values suggest a possible high concentration of volatile fatty acids, which hinders pH increases and, thus, enables ammonia stripping. Despite the initial matrix origin, a low IA compared to the total alkalinity (TA) (<20% of TA) ensures a greater ammonia removal efficiency, which could be similar between digestate and raw manure in the same operative process conditions. Methane (CH4) emission in livestock arises from enteric fermentation (EnF) and manure management (MM). This study develops the country-specific CH4 emission factors (EFs) in both EnF and MM for domestic water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) and estimates total CH4 emission in Nepal using Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Tier 2 methodology. Seasonal field data were collected on morphological characteristics, feed characteristics, and manure management practices of the buffalo. The buffalo population was divided into five age groups, and at least 35 buffalo individuals were measured from each age group in the Hilly and Plain regions of Nepal in the winter and summer seasons. Buffalo adult male (BAM) had the highest body weight of 530 ± 53 kg in the plain region and 514 ± 65 kg in the Hill region. Similarly, the weight of buffalo calf (BC) was 91 ± 25 kg in the plain region and 77 ± 26 kg in the Hill region. For different age groups of buffalo, EnF EFs ranged from 34 ± 8 to 90 ± 10 kg CH4 head−1 year−1 and MM EFs ranged from 2.5 ± 0.5 to 7.5 ± 0.5 kg CH4 head−1 year−1. The estimated EnF and MM EFs of buffalo were not statistically different by region (p > 0.05). The total CH4 flux from buffalo was 347.8 Gg year−1 in Nepal, contributing 322.2 Gg year−1 from EnF and 25.6 Gg year−1 from MM. Simple Summary: Manure generated in bovine farms may pose human and animal health risks. If not managed and used properly, these risks may be spread to other areas. The risks can be minimised when farmers are aware of them and apply optimum practices at their farms, at storage, processing, and when manure is applied to land as a fertiliser. This research aims to evaluate the Cypriot bovine farmers' knowledge about the risks from manure and the practices currently applied for manure management through a questionnaire survey. The results indicated some gaps in farmers' knowledge and some deficiencies in employing optimal management practices. The education level and the farming purpose were identified as determinants of the level of farmers' knowledge. The conclusion was that farmers' knowledge must be reinforced through specialised training to ensure proper manure management. Although the current practices partially decrease manure pathogens, interventions to promote the use of more effective treatment methods, such as biogas transformation and composting, would be beneficial. The results could help Cypriot and other competent authorities to develop an action plan to control the health risks by educating farmers, promoting the use of more efficient management methods and developing new legislation. Manure from bovine farms is commonly used as an organic fertiliser. However, if not properly managed, it can spread significant biological and chemical hazards, threatening both human and animal health. The effectiveness of risk control hugely relies on farmers' knowledge regarding safe manure management and on the application of suitable management practices. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge and practices of Cypriot bovine farmers towards safer manure management, from its generation to its final use, in line with the One Health approach. Factors affecting farmers' knowledge and applied practices are also investigated through a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire was developed and sent to all eligible bovine farmers in Cyprus (n = 353), and 30% (n = 105) of them returned the completed questionnaire. Results revealed there are some gaps in farmers' knowledge. The use of manure for fertilising crops dominated. Only half of the farmers stored manure in appropriate facilities, with 28.5% of them using a dedicated area with cement floors and 21.5% utilising leakproof tanks. The majority (65.7%) stored manure for more than three months before its use as a fertiliser in a dried form. In multiple regression analysis, education level and farming purpose were significant determinants of farmer knowledge. In conclusion, Cypriot farmers' knowledge must be reinforced to ensure proper manure management. The results highlight the importance of providing relevant training to farmers. Methane from livestock is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Annex I countries’ National Inventories report emissions from cattle as enteric or from manure management at ratios of between 3:1 and 9:1 depending on country and cattle type. Field research generally supports the inventories’ assumptions about enteric emissions, but these ratios have focused interest on enteric emissions and diverted attention away from those from manure management. Official calculations about manure management emissions factors are more varied than those for enteric emissions and evidence from field measurements suggests inventories may be underestimating manure management emissions especially in the dairy sector. This paper has three objectives. First, it reviews the science underpinning the international framework for estimating methane emissions from manure management. Second, it presents data from two dairy farms in south-west England where measured emissions of methane from slurry storage facilities are found to be four to five times greater than the assumptions in the UK’s inventory. If these measurements were representative of the UK, the implication is that total methane emissions from the UK dairy herd would be over 40% greater than the level reported to the UNFCCC and the proportion of total methane emissions from dairy cows arising from manure management would be almost a half rather than less than a quarter. Finally, the paper assesses the potential value if methane were captured from slurry storage facilities. Its value as a biogas is estimated to be £500 million per year for the UK dairy industry (at forecourt diesel prices). The paper concludes that the scale of emissions and the potential economic value of lost biogas are sufficient to warrant urgent research and action to reduce emissions from manure management with the beneficial prospect that a valuable new income stream for farm businesses could also be realised.

Dairy manure is one of the largest sources of methane (CH _4 ) emissions and air pollution from agriculture. In a previous study, we showed that composting dairy manure with biochar substantially reduces CH _4 emissions and could help the dairy industry meet climate goals. However, it remained unclear whether biochar could also mitigate the emission of air pollutants and odor during composting. Here, we conducted a full-scale composting study at a dairy farm and monitored the emission of greenhouse gases (CO _2 , CH _4 , N _2 O) and air pollutants (H _2 S, VOCs, NO _x , NH _3 ) from compost piles amended with or without biochar. We found that amending compost with biochar significantly reduced total CH _4 emissions by 58% (±22%) and cut H _2 S, VOCs, and NO _x emissions by 67% (±24%), 61% (±19%) and 70% (±22%), respectively. We attribute this reduction in emissions to improved oxygen diffusion from the porous biochar and the adsorption of gas precursors to the biochar surface. Interestingly, NO _x fluxes from the composting dairy manure were much higher than the few values reported in the literature, suggesting that dairy manure could also be a significant source of NO _x emissions. We estimate that biochar-composting of dairy manure would reduce the social cost of manure emissions from this farm by over $66 000 annually. Results from this study suggest that composting dairy manure with biochar, in addition to reducing CH _4 emissions, may help to improve air quality and the health and wellbeing of rural communities, but further studies are needed to test the quantitative impacts.

Animal slurry (liquid manure) is a significant source of air pollution. Because the biological and chemical processes that drive emission are sensitive to temperature, there is a need for simple tools that can be used to predict the temperature of stored animal slurry for both emissions inventories and research. In this contribution we describe a heat transfer model and an open-source software implementation that addresses these limitations. The model is a simple mechanistic representation of the slurry-environment system, and the software includes a default parameter set developed from a combination of theory and fitting to measurements made at three concrete tanks in Sweden, and evaluated using measurements from two additional tanks. This contribution describes the model and software program and presents examples.

The growing population and income drive the rapid increase in food demand. Greece and a few other Mediterranean countries are characterized as countries with a high proportion of mountains favoring goat and sheep breeding; however, poultry breeding is also important, and production is increasing rapidly. Poultry breeding is characterized by the millions of birds reared with increased quantities and prices of feedstuffs. There is a parallel increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions., since poultry production generates a significant amount of GHG. The aim of the present study was to provide an overview of poultry GHG in the Mediterranean area. Emissions' sources and mitigation practices are presented. Bangladesh has endured a significant power crisis as its economy grows. Hence, it is crucial to investigate the 40% expansion of renewable energy to attain the 2041 renewable energy goal as delineated by the government of Bangladesh. The study explores the current agricultural waste situation in rural areas of the Dinajpur District to propose a feasible alternative and integrated waste management system to meet the energy policy targets for animal waste and crop residues. It analyzed the spatial distribution of feedstocks, identified the optimal sites for the locations of biogas plants based on socioeconomic and environmental criteria and geographic information, and evaluated biogas production to satisfy electricity demand using geographic information system (GIS) suitability analysis and hotspot analysis by proposing six different scenarios. The results show that 2.81 million tons of total agricultural residues are sufficient to produce 11.31 million m3 per year of biogas in the study area. Furthermore, it is found that 21 biogas-based power plants using cattle manure and rice straw are spatially and technically feasible to produce 6389.14 kW of electrical energy per year, which meets 5.73% of the demand of the district in 2019. From the 6 proposed scenarios, number 4 can produce the maximum electricity, 3047.41 kW/year. The findings support the target of achieving a clean, green, sustainable energy system in Bangladesh while improving agricultural residue management. Estimating substrate availability and location is one of the first steps in promoting biogas-based energy from cattle manure and rice straw, which demands comprehensive technical, economic, and social policy reforms. Soil fertility degradation is a major stake in sub-Saharan Africa. Strong population growth, local demand for food and land scarcity are likely to increase this phenomenon. While mineral fertilizers are little used, particularly in Madagascar, soil fertility management is therefore largely dependent on organic fertilizers produced on the farm. In order to increase the efficiency of nutrient recycling at farm level, it is necessary to understand the factors that contribute to improved manure management practices. This study proposes to analyze the relationships between the structure of farms integrating crop and livestock in the Vakinankaratra region (Highlands of Madagascar) and their manure management practices. Semi-structured interviews were carried out on 300 farms. Then, a farm typology was built through a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Seven farm types were identified, distinguishing dairy farms from other agri-livestock farms (zebus, pigs). A Chi2 test indicates a significant effect of farm structure on effluent management methods. In particular, the presence of dairy and pig farming within farms seems to favor improved manure management. The cluster analysis contributes to understanding the adoption of improved biomass management practices by crop-livestock farming systems. The adoption of such practices is a prerequisite for improving nutrients recycling from animals to agricultural plots, and thus improving the sustainability of farms in the Vakinankaratra Highlands. Indonesia berkomitmen menurunkan emisi gas rumah kaca (GRK) melalui skema nationally determined contribution (NDC). Target yang hendak dicapai untuk menurunkan emisi GRK yaitu 29% melalui skema business as usual (BAU) atau 41% dengan bantuan internasional. Target ambisius ini membutuhkan transformasi, baik dalam sistem energi maupun sistem pangan dan tata guna lahan, yang perlu mengatasi potensi pertukaran di antara sejumlah besar target, seperti ketahanan pangan, ketahanan energi, menghindari deforestasi, konservasi keanekaragaman hayati, persaingan penggunaan lahan, serta penggunaan air tawar. Mitigasi dan adaptasi memiliki peran yang saling melengkapi dalam merespons perubahan iklim yang dilakukan pada skala temporal dan spasial. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk melakukan simulasi dan prediksi pada emisi manure management penghasil CO2eq dengan menggunakan metode pembelajaran mesin long short-term memory (LSTM) dan gated recurrent unit (GRU). Tantangan yang dihadapi adalah penentuan epoch, kombinasi lapisan tersembunyi, serta karakteristik dataset yang berjumlah relatif sedikit. Hasil dari penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan nilai tambah untuk mengembangkan alat dan model pendukung keputusan yang lebih baik untuk menilai tren emisi di sektor peternakan serta untuk mengembangkan strategi mitigasi emisi CO2eq yang mengarah pada praktik pengelolaan pupuk yang berkelanjutan.

The Directive on National Emission Ceilings specifies the reduction of ammonia (NH 3) emissions among other air pollutants, which is most significant for the agricultural sector. The ammonia emission limit set for Hungary was a 10% reduction by 2020, while the target of 32% should be reached by 2030 compared to the 2005 reference year. The paper presents the results of a survey on pig production technology in Hungary from 97 domestic farms. The study aims to know the level of implementation of reduction techniques in livestock production and manure management and highlights the need for further improvements in this production sector. The research found that the application of ammonia reduction techniques was not considered widespread, either in livestock buildings or in manure storage (treatment) and during field application. For almost all (more than 90%) pig production groups, the housing systems were the reference without additional emission reduction. For manure storage, farms have insulated storage under the current regulation, however, significantly more emission reduction technologies were in the variant without cover or crust. Slurry spreading was mainly used with manure application techniques, but more emission-friendly injection and band spreading were also emerging. Besides the expected immediate incorporation, a high proportion of manure was applied between 12 and 24 hours or even after 24 hours. In the studied elements of manure management, significant improvements are needed in applying techniques to reduce ammonia emissions. Effective results can be achieved even by shortening the time between manure application and incorporation with efficient work organization.

The livestock sector in Colombia significantly participates in national economic dynamics but makes significant worldwide contributions to greenhouse gas emissions. Hence, climate change mitigation in this sector is essential. This study aims to assess the greenhouse gas in the livestock sector. The results are reported in methane emissions (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from enteric fermentation, and N2O by manure management based on the information from the Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR), in all cases expressed as dioxide of carbon (CO2eq). The emissions obtained from the EDGAR database for 2015 were proportional to the values of the National Inventory of Greenhouse Gases published by the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) in 2016. Colombia is the 12th on global, 4th in America and 2nd in South America position by livestock GHG emission, and is the dominant source in all economic sector. The results showed higher records for CH4 emissions during the years 2010 and 2015, while the N2O emissions were higher during 2015. The regions with the highest emissions of CH4 and N2O corresponded to the northwestern area of Colombia. The Spearman correlation test showed a positive correlation between the CH4 emissions, and the age groups studied. The post hoc analysis of the Kruskal–Wallis test showed a more significant influence on CH4 emissions.

Livestock manure is the main source of ammonia (NH3) and greenhouse gases emissions (GHG), which can be reduced by acidifying manure. This work assessed the effect of acidification of cattle slurry using whey on NH3 and GHG emissions during storage, followed by its usage for biogas production. Tests were conducted to optimize the dose and the frequency at which whey was applied to cattle slurry. Two of the analyzed treatments, AS1-100 and AS1-10, showed reduced emissions when compared with the control AS1-0 without whey. In AS1-100, 100% of the optimized amount of whey was added to the slurry at the beginning of the test, while in AS1-10 whey was fractioned in 10 applications (one per day) corresponding to 10% of the total. Batch-type anaerobic digestion assays using AS1-100 and AS1-10 as feedstock resulted in a significant increase in methane production when compared with the anaerobic digestion of AS1-0 (+33% and +53%, respectively). The best results in terms of gas emissions abatement and methane production during anaerobic digestion were obtained when a low organic loading rate of whey was used. These results demonstrate that the use of whey for slurry acidification is a viable approach for potentially solving the economic and environmental problems of GHG and NH3 emissions during slurry storage, whereby increasing energy and environmental sustainability. Following an increase of the demand of dairy products, higher quantities of manure are consequently produced, with the subsequent pollutant gas emission charge associated with its management. The two mostly used housing systems in the northeast of Spain, cubicles (CUB) and compost-bedded pack (CBP), entail different manure management techniques; thus, our main objective was to describe the microbiota present in manure of both systems during two distinct climatic situations (winter, mean temperature of 6.2ºC; and summer, mean temperature of 36.4ºC). The secondary aim was to correlate these microbiological profiles with literature findings on the emission of certain well-known pollutant gases from manure. CBP showed to have higher alpha biodiversity as well as presenting a remarkable clustering by season, but showed lower network complexity than CUB. Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio was found superior in CUB, which also presented a significantly higher abundance of methanogenic genera belonging to Euryarchaeota phylum, such as Methanobrevibacter, Methanosaeta or Methanosarcina. On the other hand, CBP manure presented a significant presence of Corynebacterium, Pseudomonas or Truepera, among other genera, which activity has been linked to nitrogen (N) transformation pathways in manure. Season also had a relevant role to play on the fluctuation of these populations within each housing system under study. Background: Nitrogen (N) plays an important role within milk production systems (MPS), as an indicator of environmental and economic efficiency. Objective. The objective was to determine utilisation of N offered in the ration and estimate GHG from the enteric fermentation and manure management in 12 small-scale dairy farms under two feeding strategies. Methodology. Six farms had their herds in confinement under a cut-and-carry feeding system, and six farms implemented day grazing of mixed pastures, both systems used commercial concentrates as a supplement. Cows in milk production and their replacements were considered in the study. Pasture intake was calculated by difference in dry matter intake, using 3.2 % of live weight as intake factor. The N utilisation was determined by difference between N intake and excretion at each farm during a whole year operation. The GHG emissions were estimated following Tier 2 guidelines rom IPCC. Differences in feeding strategies were analysed with a completely random block design using farms as a blocking factor. Results. Mean farm size was 5.0 ha for cut-and-carry and 16.0 ha for grazing, and dry matter feed self-sufficiency was 62 and 83% respectively, considering 12% and 22% refusals for each strategy. There were no statistically significant differences (P>0.05) for any of the N utilisation components (N in diet, N in milk, N in manure, NH3 and N2O or GHG emissions. Implications. This is a novel report on assessing N fluxes and GHG emissions from small-scale dairy systems in Mexico and Latin America. Conclusions. In general, 87.6% of the N consumed is excreted in manure and urine. The feeding strategies did not diverge enough to have an impact on GHG emissions.

Livestock production contributes to releasing methane into the atmosphere. Liquid manure management offers significant opportunities to reduce these emissions. A better understanding of the factors controlling methane emissions from manure is necessary to select effective mitigation strategies. Our study aimed to identify the influence of storage temperature and the associated change in chemical composition on methane emissions from dairy and fattening pig manure. Storage temperature affects microbial activity and induces changes in chemical composition that are key influences in methane emissions. Dairy and fattening pig manure samples were stored at five different temperatures (5–25 °C) for 90 days in a laboratory-scale experiment to measure the methane production. The chemical composition of the slurry samples was analyzed, and the biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests were performed before and after storage. For pig manure stored at 25 °C and 20 °C, methane emissions accounted for 69.3% and 50.3% of the BMP, respectively. Maximum methane emissions for dairy slurry were observed at 25 °C but remained at a low level. Analyses of the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during storage are presented in few studies, this work revealed a potential inhibition of methane production, where the accumulation of VFAs was most elevated in samples stored at 20 °C and 25 °C. This partly counteracted the increase in methane emissions expected from the higher temperatures. The degree of VFA and dissociated fatty acids accumulation in dairy cattle slurry should be assessed for more accurate estimations of methane emissions from slurry stores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ammonia (NH3) emissions deriving from the management of livestock manure have a significant environmental impact, and therefore it is important to reduce them. Among the available options, the process of NH3 stripping is promising to remove NH3 from manures and digestates recovering it as a mineral fertilizer (e.g., ammonium sulfate) that is more widely adoptable on farms. The traditional stripping process takes place in batches; however, in this study, a continuous process was evaluated using a lab scale plant in which four reactors were used in series with different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 12 or 20 days. The NH3 recovery of each reactor was studied for the liquid fraction of pig slurry, dairy cattle slurry and digestate, applying simple headspace aeration. For 20 days of HRT, totals of 92%, 83% and 67% of NH3 were stripped from the digestate, pig slurry and dairy cattle slurry, respectively. For 12 days of HRT, total NH3 recoveries were 83%, 60% and 41% for the digestate, pig slurry and dairy cattle slurry, respectively. The inlet NH3 concentration and inlet total alkalinity had a positive and negative effect, respectively, on the specific NH3 removal rate for each reactor. A study was conducted to compare the composition of equine manure as removed from the stall, and bedding-free manure on six horse farms. The farms ranged from a pleasure horse stable with poorly managed stalls to an intensively managed stable for racehorses. The manure characteristics measured included: moisture content, total nitrogen, total ammoniacal nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, organic nitrogen, total phosphorous (expressed as P2O5), total potassium (expressed as K2O), calcium, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, copper, manganese, iron, total carbon, electrical conductivity (index of soluble salts), and pH. Statistical analysis indicated that stall management had a significant impact on the dry basis concentrations of all plant nutrients, carbon, organic matter, pH, and EC. It was also determined that the C:N of stall manure ranged from 23.4:1 to 48.5:1 depending on the amount of bedding used and daily management. The C:N value of equine manure was used as an indicator of the level of stall management (high, medium, low). It was determined that the concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, and sodium were negatively correlated with the C:N of horse manure. Average EC measurements ranged from 1.86 to 3.46 mmhos/cm. A correlation analysis, that included all metals that could be in salt form, indicated that EC was significantly correlated with the K2O content but not with sodium, calcium, or magnesium. The high C:N values of horse manure indicated that composting may be a preferred method of treatment prior to land application. However, spreading equine manure based on the agronomic rate for P2O5 for a pasture and adding fertilizer nitrogen sufficient to reduce the C:N of applied manure to 10:1 to overcome induced nitrogen deficiency may provide another alternative. Largely due to manure management, intensive livestock production is known to negatively impact air, water, and soil quality. Excessive manure is often applied to soil as fertilizer or stored in lagoon. However, some thermo-chemical methods, such as gasification and pyrolysis, can transform manure from waste into a valuable resource. The closed-loop dairy concept employs these methods to create biochar derived from cow manure for use as a soil amendment and a water filtration medium. This closed-loop concept has the potential to produce syngas and bio-oil for production of electricity, and to reduce excessive nutrients in liquid manure irrigation by filtering manure slurry stored in lagoons. It replaces solid manure with biochar in land applications to further reduce nutrient runoff and increase soil resilience against erosion. In this study, a Water-Energy-Food-Waste nexus-based analysis and resource allocation tool was developed to evaluate the economic, environmental, and social feasibility of the closed-loop dairy system. The tool utilizes several levers to simulate a user-specified dairy operation, such as number of livestock, acres farmed, quantity of effluent irrigation, distribution of manure and biochar products, and type of biomass conversions. Financial estimates from central Texas in 2018 were used to evaluate the profitability of these practices against the costs of a dairy and hay operation. The study showed that the closed-loop dairy system, while case dependent, could be profitable and, based on operational costs, a small dairy of approximately 200 cows could break even. Results also indicate that the benefits of biomass conversions to produce energy byproducts should increase with scale. This study can help many dairy farms that are considering the economic and environmental sustainability of the industry, which has been under scrutiny.

Bu çalışmada, hayvancılık işletmelerinin yoğun olduğu Kütahya ilinde bulunan süt sığırı işletmelerinin mevcut uygulamadaki atık depolama, değerlendirme ve yönetim sistemleri, işletmelerde oluşan hayvansal atıkların fonksiyonel özellikleri ve çevreye olan etkilerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu nedenle bölge genelini temsil edebilecek 100 adet süt sığırı işletmesi çalışma materyali olarak seçilmiştir. Önceki çalışmaların sonuçları ile birlikte değerlendirmeler yapılarak, süt sığırı hayvancılığının bölgemizdeki geleceği açısından uygulanabilir öneri ve yaklaşımlar sunulmuştur. Araştırma alanında bulunan işletmelerin gübre yönetimleri incelendiğinde, %66’sında insan gücü ve kürekle toplanan gübre, %80 oranında açıkta yığın olarak uygun olmayan koşullarda bekletilmektedir. İşletmelerin sadece %20’sinde gübre deposu bulunmakta ve araştırma alanı işletmelerinin önemli bir kısmı (%62) yerleşim alanları içinde faaliyet göstermektedir. İşletmelerin %47’si su kaynaklarına çok yakın konumda bulunmakta ve çoğunluğunda gübre toplama ve depolama yöntemleri uygun olmayan koşullarda yapıldığı için ekolojik anlamda potansiyel tehlike unsurları içermektedir. Su, toprak, görüntü ve koku kirliliğinin önlenebilir olması, işletmelerin yerleşim yerlerine, su kaynaklarına yeterli uzaklıkta ve uygun alt yapı ile kurulup işletilmeleri ile mümkün olacaktır.

Manure from bovine farms is commonly used as an organic fertiliser. However, if not properly managed, it can spread significant biological and chemical hazards, threatening both human and animal health. The effectiveness of risk control hugely relies on farmers’ knowledge regarding safe manure management and on the application of suitable management practices. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge and practices of Cypriot bovine farmers towards safer manure management, from its generation to its final use, in line with the One Health approach. Factors affecting farmers’ knowledge and applied practices are also investigated through a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire was developed and sent to all eligible bovine farmers in Cyprus (n = 353), and 30% (n = 105) of them returned the completed questionnaire. Results revealed there are some gaps in farmers’ knowledge. The use of manure for fertilising crops dominated. Only half of the farmers stored manure in appropriate facilities, with 28.5% of them using a dedicated area with cement floors and 21.5% utilising leakproof tanks. The majority (65.7%) stored manure for more than three months before its use as a fertiliser in a dried form. In multiple regression analysis, education level and farming purpose were significant determinants of farmer knowledge. In conclusion, Cypriot farmers’ knowledge must be reinforced to ensure proper manure management. The results highlight the importance of providing relevant training to farmers. Although the current practices partially decrease manure pathogens, interventions to promote the use of more effective treatment methods, such as biogas transformation and composting, would be beneficial.
