Spatial solitary waves in colloidal suspensions of spherical dielectric nanoparticles are considered. The interaction of the nanoparticles is modelled as a hard-sphere gas, with the Carnahan-Starling formula used for the gas compressibility. Semi-analytical solutions, for both one and two spatial dimensions, are derived using an averaged Lagrangian and suitable trial functions for the solitary waves. Power versus propagation constant curves and neutral stability curves are obtained for both cases, which illustrate that multiple solution branches occur for both the one and two dimensional geometries. For the one-dimensional case it is found that three solution branches (with a bistable regime) occur, while for the two-dimensional case two solution branches (with a single stable branch) occur in the limit of low background packing fractions. For high background packing fractions the power versus propagation constant curves are monotonic and the solitary waves stable for all parameter values. Comparisons are made between the semi-analytical and numerical solutions, with excellent comparison obtained., Comment: Paper to appear in Dynamics of Continuous, Discrete and Impulsive Systems, Series B

- Abstract
Background: Quality improvement is a recommended strategy to improve implementation levels for evidence-based essential interventions, but experience of and evidence for its effects in low-resource settings are limited. We hypothesised that a systemic and collaborative quality improvement approach covering district, facility and community levels, supported by report cards generated through continuous household and health facility surveys, could improve the implementation levels and have a measurable population-level impact on coverage and quality of essential services. Methods: Collaborative quality improvement teams tested self-identified strategies (change ideas) to support the implementation of essential maternal and newborn interventions recommended by the World Health Organization. In Tanzania and Uganda, we used a plausibility design to compare the changes over time in one intervention district with those in a comparison district in each country. Evaluation included indicators of process, coverage and implementation practice analysed with a difference-of-differences and a time-series approach, using data from independent continuous household and health facility surveys from 2011 to 2014. Primary outcomes for both countries were birth in health facilities, breastfeeding within 1 h after birth, oxytocin administration after birth and knowledge of danger signs for mothers and babies. Interpretation of the results considered contextual factors. Results: The intervention was associated with improvements on one of four primary outcomes. We observed a 26percentage- point increase (95% CI 25-28%) in the proportion of live births where mothers received uterotonics within 1 min after birth in the intervention compared to the comparison district in Tanzania and an 8-percentage-point increase (95% CI 6-9%) in Uganda. The other primary indicators showed no evidence of improvement. In Tanzania, we saw positive changes for two other outcomes reflecting locally identified imp

- Abstract
© 2016 Elsevier Ltd Most constitutive models can only simulate cumulative deformation after a limited number of cycles. However, railroad ballast usually experiences a large number of train passages that cause history-dependent long-term deformation. Fractional calculus is an efficient tool for modelling this phenomenon and therefore is incorporated into a constitutive model for predicting the cumulative deformation. The proposed model is further validated by comparing the model predictions with a series of corresponding experimental results. It is observed that the proposed model can realistically simulate the cumulative deformation of ballast from the onset of loading up to a large number of load cycles.

- Abstract
We present a large-scale social marketing programme of insecticide-treated nets in 2 rural districts in south-western Tanzania (population 350 000) and describe how the long-term child health and survival impact will be assessed. Formative and market research were conducted in order to understand community perceptions, knowledge, attitudes and practice with respect to the products to be socially marketed. We identified Zuia Mbu (Kiswahili for ‘prevent mosquitoes') as a suitable brand name for both treated nets and single-dose insecticide treatment sachets. A mix of public and private sales outlets is used for distribution. In the first stage of a stepped introduction 31 net agents were appointed and trained in 18 villages: 15 were shop owners, 14 were village leaders, 1 was a parish priest and 1 a health worker. For net treatment 37 young people were appointed in the same villages and trained as agents. Further institutions in both districts such as hospitals, development projects and employers were also involved in distribution. Promotion for both products was intense and used a variety of channels. A total of 22 410 nets and 8072 treatments were sold during the first year: 18 months after launching, 46% of 312 families with children aged under 5 years reported that their children were sleeping under treated nets. A strong evaluation component in over 50 000 people allows assessment of the long-term effects of insecticide-treated nets on child health and survival, anaemia in pregnancy, and the costs of the intervention. This evaluation is based on cross-sectional surveys, and case-control and cohort studies

- Abstract
This IDEAS study of interactions between families and frontline workers and coverage of critical interventions for mothers and newborns was conducted between May-June 2012 and May-June 2015 across four regions of Ethiopia.\ud \ud The aim was to estimate changes in maternal and newborn health care in areas where implementation projects funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation were operating. In 2012 the study methods were defined to include a sub-set of areas where the Last Ten Kilometers (L10K) project was operating, run by John Snow Incorporated.\ud \ud Over the last two decades maternal, newborn and child survival has improved from very high levels of mortality. The maternal mortality ratio declined from an estimated 1,400 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 420/100,000 in 2014, although this falls short of the 2015 target of 350/100,000.\ud \ud Child mortality rates declined from 204 child deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 59/1,000 in 2015, meeting 2015 targets. And neonatal mortality declined from 61 deaths in the first 28 days of life per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 28/1,000 in 2015. The country has set ambitious goals to build on these gains even further.\ud \ud Key Messages\ud \ud -While improvements are still needed, access to antenatal and intrapartum health care has increased on a large scale in Ethiopia. Simultaneously, there have been improvements in the readiness of the health system to provide quality care\ud \ud - The data collection period coincided with a period of remarkable activity in the Ethiopian health system with government led health system strengthening being implemented throughout the country\ud \ud - Across the continuum of care we observe large gains in coverage of life saving interventions being made amongst the most poor women, with coverage among all sub-groups increasing\ud \ud - Yet, coverage of postnatal checks for the mother and the newborn remain extremely low and represent a problem needing urgent attention

Interactions between families and frontline workers – their frequency, quality, and equity – and coverage of interventions for mothers and newborns\ud \ud This IDEAS report studies the interactions between families and frontline workers and coverage of critical interventions for mothers and newborns was conducted between June 2012 and June 2015 in Gombe State, Nigeria. \ud \ud IDEAS focuses on the changes in indicators that were expected to improve as a result of the specific implementation activities.\ud \ud The aim was to estimate changes in maternal and newborn health care in areas where Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation implementation projects were operating. In this region, the project was implemented by the Society for Family Health. \ud \ud This is one of three country-specific reports, along with Ethiopia and Uttar Preadesh, India. \ud \ud It follows from the 2013 Baseline findings from Gombe State, Nigeria.\ud \ud The survey results suggest that while coverage of routine care across the continuum did not increase, more women who needed emergency care at the time of birth were able to access it. \ud \ud Important improvements in the coverage of some newborn interventions were observed, especially those that relied on the behaviours of caregivers such as delayed bathing, although none became universal.\ud \ud The unfinished agenda for change in Gombe State needs the continued promotion of maternal and newborn health issues amongst communities, mechanisms to improve the care provided to mother and baby immediately after birth, enhancing the supply of quality care in facilities, and an urgent agenda to address the considerable and persistent inequity in the state.\ud \ud This publication was written by Tanya Marchant and produced by the IDEAS project led by Professor Joanna Schellenberg at the London School of Hygiene Tropical Medicine.\ud \ud The IDEAS team wishes to acknowledge the work of Health Hub Ltd and Data Research and Mapping Consult Ltd. who implemented the surveys in 2012 and 2015 respectively, and the cooperation and contributions by the implementing partners in the state, Society for Family Health and PACT throughout the development and implementation process. \ud \ud We are also grateful to state officials in Gombe for their input and support, and to all households, facilities and individuals surveyed.\ud \ud The short URL for this report is bit.ly/mnh-nigeria

- Abstract
'Interactions between families and frontline workers – their frequency, quality, and equity – and coverage of interventions for mothers and newborns'. This IDEAS study of the interactions between families and frontline workers and coverage of critical interventions for mothers and newborns was conducted between November 2012 and November 2015 in the State of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is one of three country-specific reports, along with Ethiopia and North Eastern Nigeria. \ud \ud It follows from the 2013 Baseline findings from Uttar Pradesh, India. The aim was to estimate changes in maternal and newborn health care in areas where Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation implementation projects were operating, with three active projects in the region: Manthan;\ud Better Birth; The Community Mobilisation Project. \ud \ud The main body of this report focuses on change in indicators that were expected to improve as a result of the specific implementation activities in place in the study area. \ud \ud This study was not designed to reflect progress of individual projects, but to understand changes arising as a result of investments made by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation strategy for maternal and newborn health.\ud \ud Key Messages: (1) Some, but not all, indicators that had been targeted by projects were observed to have increased between the surveys (2) Coverage of at least one antenatal care visit with a skilled provider increased so that three quarters of women reported this in 2015. But there was no change in coverage of at least four antenatal care visits with only one quarter of women having the recommended four visits in 2015. (3) Postnatal care for the mother within two days of birth increased from half of women receiving a check, to two-thirds of women in 2015. This large change was driven by an increase in the number of postnatal checks for women who delivered at home. (4) Postnatal care for the newborn remained very low at just 15% in 2015 and Indicators of interaction quality showed no evidence of change (5) There was very little change in the coverage of life saving interventions for newborns (6) Over three-quarters of women with a recent birth had been visited at home by a frontline worker in 2015.\ud \ud Citation\ud Marchant, T; (2016). Change in maternal and newborn health care: Interactions between families and front line workers – their frequency, quality, and equity – and coverage of interventions for mothers and newborns. Report from six-district surveys in Uttar Pradesh, India, 2012-2015. IDEAS Project Report. London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.\ud \ud Acknowledgement \ud The IDEAS team wishes to acknowledge the work of Sambodhi Research and Communications Pvt. Ltd who implemented the surveys, and the cooperation of the grantees in Uttar Pradesh throughout the development and implementation process. We are grateful to the State officials in Lucknow who provided support to the survey implementation, and to all households, facilities and individuals surveyed.

The hadronic structure of the photon F2gamma is measured as a function of Bjorken x and of the photon virtuality Q2 using deep-inelastic scattering data taken by the OPAL detector at LEP at e+e- centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. Previous OPAL measurements of the x dependence of F2gamma are extended to an average Q2 of =780GeV2 using data in the kinematic range 0.15 < x < 0.98. The Q2 evolution of F2gamma is studied for 12.1 < < 780GeV2 using three ranges of x. As predicted by QCD, the data show positive scaling violations in F2gamma for the central x region 0.10-0.60. Several parameterisations of F2gamma are in qualitative agreement with the measurements whereas the quark-parton model prediction fails to describe the data. A search for pair-produced doubly charged Higgs bosons has been performed using data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 614 pb-1 collected with the OPAL detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 189GeV and 209GeV. No evidence for a signal has been observed. A mass limit of 98.5GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level has been set for the doubly charged Higgs particle in left-right symmetric models. This is the first search for doubly charged Higgs bosons at centre-of-mass energies larger than 91GeV., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Lett. B

About 4.4 million hadronic decays of Z bosons, recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of around sqrt(s) = 91.2 GeV, are used to determine the mean charged particle multiplicities for the three light quark flavours. Events from primary u, d, and s quarks are tagged by selecting characteristic particles which carry a large fraction of the beam energy. The charged particle multiplicities are measured in the hemispheres opposite to these particles. An unfolding procedure is applied to obtain these multiplicities for each primary light quark flavour. This yields = 17.77 +- 0.51 +0.86 -1.20, = 21.44 +- 0.63 +1.46 -1.17, = 20.02 +- 0.13 +0.39 -0.37, where statistical and systematic errors are given. The results for and are almost fully statistically anti-correlated. Within the errors the result is consistent with the flavour independence of the strong interaction for the particle multiplicities in events from the light up, down, and strange quarks., Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Eur. - Abstract
BACKGROUND: The Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP), launched in 2014, aims to end preventable newborn deaths and stillbirths, with national targets of ≤12 neonatal deaths per 1000 live births and ≤12 stillbirths per 1000 total births by 2030. This requires ambitious improvement of the data on care at birth and of small and sick newborns, particularly to track coverage, quality and equity. METHODS: In a multistage process, a matrix of 70 indicators were assessed by the Every Newborn steering group. Indicators were graded based on their availability and importance to ENAP, resulting in 10 core and 10 additional indicators. A consultation process was undertaken to assess the status of each ENAP core indicator definition, data availability and measurement feasibility. Coverage indicators for the specific ENAP treatment interventions were assigned task teams and given priority as they were identified as requiring the most technical work. Consultations were held throughout. RESULTS: ENAP published 10 core indicators plus 10 additional indicators. Three core impact indicators (neonatal mortality rate, maternal mortality ratio, stillbirth rate) are well defined, with future efforts needed to focus on improving data quantity and quality. Three core indicators on coverage of care for all mothers and newborns (intrapartum/skilled birth attendance, early postnatal care, essential newborn care) have defined contact points, but gaps exist in measuring content and quality of the interventions. Four core (antenatal corticosteroids, neonatal resuscitation, treatment of serious neonatal infections, kangaroo mother care) and one additional coverage indicator for newborns at risk or with complications (chlorhexidine cord cleansing) lack indicator definitions or data, especially for denominators (population in need). To address these gaps, feasible coverage indicator definitions are presented for validity testing. Measurable process indicators to help monitor health service readiness are

- Abstract
Semi-analytical solutions for the diffusive Lotka-Volterra predator-prey system with delay are considered in one and two-dimensional domains. The Galerkin method is applied, which approximates the spatial structure of both the predator and prey populations. This approach is used to obtain a lower-order, ordinary differential delay equation model for the system of governing delay partial differential equations. Steady-state and transient solutions and the region of parameter space, in which Hopf bifurcations occur, are all found. In some cases simple linear expressions are found as approximations, to describe steady-state solutions and the Hopf parameter regions. An asymptotic analysis for the periodic solution near the Hopf bifurcation point is performed for the one-dimensional domain. An excellent agreement is shown in comparisons between semi-analytical and numerical solutions of the governing equations.

- Abstract
Despite benefits of using light-sensitive geolocators to track animal movements and describe patterns of migratory connectivity, concerns have been raised about negative effects of these devices, particularly in small species of aerial insectivore.Geolocators may act as handicaps that increase energetic expenditure, which could explain reported effects of geolocators on survival. We tested this ‘Energetic Expenditure Hypothesis’ in 12 populations of tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) and barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) from North America and Europe, usingmeasurements of corticosterone from feathers (CORTf) grown after deployment of geolocators as a measure of physiology relevant to energetics. Contrary to predictions, neither among- (both species) nor within-individual (tree swallows only) levels of CORTf differed with respect to instrumentation. Thus, to the extent that CORTf reflects energetic expenditure, geolocators apparently were not a strong handicap for birds that returned post-deployment. While this physiological evidence suggests that information about migration obtained from returning geolocator-equipped swallows is unbiased with regard to levels of stress, we cannot discount the possibility that corticosterone played a role in reported effects of geolocators on survival in birds, and suggest that future studies relate corticosterone to antecedent factors, such as reproductive history, and to downstream fitness costs.

- Abstract
The IDEAS baseline study of interactions between families and frontline workers and coverage of critical interventions for mothers and newborns was conducted in 2012 in Ethiopia.\ud \ud Its aim was to gather information about the frequency, quality, and equity of interactions that women have with frontline workers during pregnancy, delivery, and in the first 28 days after birth, and to estimate the coverage of life saving interventions that frontline workers are able to deliver to mothers and newborns.\ud \ud In the context of Ethiopia, frontline workers include the Health Development Army, Community Health Promoters and Traditional Birth Attendants working in communities, Health Extension Workers working at health posts and in communities, and nurses, midwives and doctors working in primary health centres.\ud \ud The findings represent a descriptive analysis of interactions and intervention coverage along the continuum of care. At least two years after baseline,\ud an endline survey will be carried out to investigate the extent to which innovations implemented in the study area that aim to enhance family and frontline worker interactions (by making them more frequent, better quality, and more equitable) result in measurable increases in intervention coverage.

Semi-analytical solutions are considered for a delay logistic equation with non-smooth feedback control, in a one dimensional reaction-diffusion domain. The feedback mechanism involves varying the population density in the boundary region, in response to the population density in the centre of the domain. The effect of the two sources of delay, from the logistic equation itself and the feedback term, is explored. The Galerkin method, which assumes a spatial structure for the solution, is used to approximate the governing partial differential equation by a system of ordinary differential equations. The form of feedback is chosen to leave the steady-state solution unchanged and guarantee positive population densities at the boundary. Whilst physically realistic, the feedback is non-smooth as it has discontinuous derivatives. A local stability analysis, of the four smooth parts of the full system, allows a band of parameter space, in which Hopf bifurcations occur, to be found. A precise estimate of the Hopf bifurcation parameter space, for the non-smooth system, is obtained using a hybrid stability condition. This is found by considering the dominant eigenvalues of the smooth parts of the system. Examples of bifurcation diagrams, stable solutions and limit cycles are shown in detail. Comparisons of the semi-analytical and numerical solutions show that the semi-analytical solutions are highly accurate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper describes a novel method for simultaneous intrafraction tracking of multiple fiducial markers. Although the proposed method is generic and can be adopted for a number of applications including fluoroscopy based patient position monitoring and gated radiotherapy, the tracking results presented in this paper are specific to tracking fiducial markers in a sequence of cone beam CT projection images. Methods: The proposed method is accurate and robust thanks to utilizing the mean shift and random sampling principles, respectively. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated with qualitative and quantitative methods, using data from two pancreatic and one prostate cancer patients and a moving phantom. The ground truth, for quantitative evaluation, was calculated based on manual tracking preformed by three observers. Results: The average dispersion of marker position error calculated from the tracking results for pancreas data (six markers tracked over 640 frames, 3840 marker identifications) was 0.25 mm (at iscoenter), compared with an average dispersion for the manual ground truth estimated at 0.22 mm. For prostate data (three markers tracked over 366 frames, 1098 marker identifications), the average error was 0.34 mm. The estimated tracking error in the pancreas data was

- Abstract
We study soliton solutions of a two-dimensional nonlocal NLS equation of Hartree-type with a Bessel potential kernel. The equation models laser propagation in nematic liquid crystals. Motivated by the experimental observation of spatially localized beams, see Conti et al. (2003), we show existence, stability, regularity, and radial symmetry of energy minimizing soliton solutions in R2. We also give theoretical lower bounds for the L2-norm (power) of these solitons, and show that small L2 -norm initial conditions lead to decaying solutions. We also present numerical computations of radial soliton solutions. These solutions exhibit the properties expected by the infinite plane theory, although we also see some finite (computational) domain effects, especially solutions with arbitrarily small power.

- Abstract
The four LEP collaborations, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, have searched for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons in the framework of Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs). The data of the four experiments have been statistically combined. The results are interpreted within the 2HDM for Type I and Type II benchmark scenarios. No statistically significant excess has been observed when compared to the Standard Model background prediction, and the combined LEP data exclude large regions of the model parameter space. Charged Higgs bosons with mass below 80 GeV/c2 (Type II scenario) or 72.5 GeV/c2 (Type I scenario, for pseudo-scalar masses above 12 GeV/c2) are excluded at the 95% confidence level. © 2013 The Author(s).

High Energy Physics::Phenomenology ,High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
The OPAL Detector (an Omni Purpose Apparatus for Lep) \\ \\OPAL, a general purpose detector, was designed to study a wide range of unexplored physics at LEP. \\ \\At LEP1, one of the central issues is the precise determination of the mass, width and couplings to quarks and leptons of the Z$^{0}$ boson. At LEP2 the mass and couplings of the W$^\pm$ bosons are determined. Accurate measurements of these quantities might reveal the mechanisms by which symmetries are broken. Many topics relating to heavy flavours are studied, including the properties of tau leptons, and the spectroscopy, lifetimes and mixing of hadrons containing b-quarks. \\ \\There are very active QCD and Two-Photon groups. Among the topics being studied are the determination of the strong coupling constant, $ \alpha _{S} $, tests of the group structure of QCD, differences between quark- and gluon-induced jets, many aspects of the fragmentation process measurements of many different final states in photon-photon collision, and measurement of structure functions. These studies are continuing at LEP2. \\ \\General searches for new particles, such as the Higgs boson and supersymmetric states, were pursued at LEP1 and now extended at the higher energies of LEP2. \\ \\These studies, as well as searches for more unexpected phenomena require a general purpose detector with good energy resolution and particle identification and which is capable of studying complicated events. \\ \\The main components of the detector in order of increasing distance from the interaction point, are as follows (fig.1): \begin{enumerate}[a)] \item A silicon microvertex detector, installed around the beam pipe, which measures two points (r-$\phi$~and~z) per track. \item Central detectors consisting of a Vertex and Jet detector, both of the multi~$\Delta
