Rare-earth oxides (REOs) are an important class of materials owing to their unique properties, including high ionic conductivities, large dielectric constants, and elevated melting temperatures, making them relevant to several technological applications such as catalysis, ionic conduction, and sensing. The ability to predict these properties at moderate computational cost is essential to guiding materials discovery and optimizing materials performance. Although density-functional theory (DFT) is the favored approach for predicting electronic and atomic structures, its accuracy is limited in describing strong electron correlation and localization inherent to REOs. The newly developed strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-generalized-gradient approximations (meta-GGAs) promise improved accuracy in modeling these strongly correlated systems. We assess the performance of these meta-GGAs on binary REOs by comparing the numerical accuracy of thirteen exchange-correlation approximations in predicting structural, magnetic, and electronic properties. Hubbard U corrections for self-interaction errors and spin-orbit coupling are systematically considered. Our comprehensive assessment offers insights into the physical properties and functional performance of REOs predicted by first-principles and provides valuable guidance for selecting optimal DFT functionals for exploring these materials.

High-entropy materials shift the traditional materials discovery paradigm to one that leverages disorder, enabling access to unique chemistries unreachable through enthalpy alone. We present a self-consistent approach integrating computation and experiment to understand and explore single-phase rock salt high-entropy oxides. By leveraging a machine-learning interatomic potential, we rapidly and accurately map high-entropy composition space using our two descriptors: bond length distribution and mixing enthalpy. The single-phase stabilities for all experimentally stabilized rock salt compositions are correctly resolved, with dozens more compositions awaiting discovery.

The ability to create superlattices in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures via moir\'e interference heralded a new era in the science and technology of two-dimensional materials. Through precise control of the twist angle, flat bands and strongly correlated phases have been engineered. The precise twisting of vdW layers is in some sense a bottom-up approach--a single parameter can dial in a wide range of periodic structures. Here, we describe a top-down approach to engineering nanoscale potentials in vdW layers using a buried programmable ferroelectric layer. Ultra-low-voltage electron beam lithography (ULV-EBL) is used to program ferroelectric domains in a ferroelectric Al_{1-x}B_{x}N thin film through a graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructure that is transferred on top. We demonstrate ferroelectric field effects by creating a lateral p-n junction, and demonstrate spatial resolution down to 35 nm, limited by the resolution of our scanned probe characterization methods. This innovative, resist-free patterning method is predicted to achieve 10 nm resolution and enable arbitrary programming of vdW layers, opening a pathway to create new phases that are inaccessible by moir\'e techniques. High entropy oxides (HEO)s have garnered much interest due to their available high degree of tunability. Here, we study the local structure of (MgNiCuCoZn)0.167(MnCr)0.083O, a composition based on the parent HEO (MgNiCuCoZn)0.2O.We synthesized a series of thin films via pulsed laser deposition at incremental oxygen partial pressures. X-ray diffraction shows lattice parameter to decrease with increased pO2 pressures until the onset of phase separation. X-ray absorption fine structure shows that specific atomic species in the composition dictate the global structure of the material as Cr, Co, and Mn shift to energetically favorable coordination with increasing pressure. Transmission electron microscopy analysis on a lower-pressure sample exhibits a rock salt structure, but the higher-pressure sample reveals reflections reminiscent of the spinel structure. In all, these findings give a more complete picture on how (MgNiCuCoZn)0.167(MnCr)0.083O forms with varying initial conditions and advances fundamental knowledge of cation behavior in high entropy oxides.

We unravel the distinct roles each cation plays in phase evolution, stability, and properties within Mg1/5Co1/5Ni1/5Cu1/5Zn1/5O high-entropy oxide (HEO) by integrating experimental findings, thermodynamic analyses, and first-principles predictions. Our approach is through sequentially removing one cation at a time from the five-component high-entropy oxide to create five four-component derivatives. Bulk synthesis experiments indicate that Mg, Ni, and Co act as rock salt phase stabilizers whereas only Mg and Ni enthalpically enhance single-phase rock salt stability in thin film growth; synthesis conditions dictate whether Co is a rock salt phase stabilizer or destabilizer. By examining the competing phases and oxidation state preferences using pseudo-binary phase diagrams and first-principles calculations, we resolve the stability differences between bulk and thin film for all compositions. We systematically explore HEO macroscopic property sensitivity to cation selection employing both predicted and measured optical spectra. This study establishes a framework for understanding high-entropy oxide synthesizability and properties on a per-cation basis that is broadly applicable to tailoring functional property design in other high-entropy materials., Comment: Saeed S. We report on the structure and dielectric properties of ternary A6B2O17 (A = Zr; B = Nb, Ta) thin films and ceramics. Thin films are produced via sputter deposition from dense, phase-homogenous bulk ceramic targets, which are synthesized through a reactive sintering process at 1500 {\deg}C. Crystal structure, microstructure, chemistry and dielectric properties are characterized by X-ray diffraction and reflectivity, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and capacitance analysis respectively. We observe relative permittivities approaching 60 and loss tangents < 10^-2 across the 10^3-10^5 Hz frequency range in the Zr6Nb2O17 and Zr6Ta2O17 phases. Interest in high-entropy inorganic compounds originates from their ability to stabilize cations and anions in local environments that rarely occur at standard temperature and pressure. This leads to new crystalline phases in many-cation formulations with structures and properties that depart from conventional trends. The highest-entropy homogeneous and random solid-solution is a parent structure from which a continuum of lower-entropy offspring can originate by adopting chemical and/or structural order. This report demonstrates how synthesis conditions, thermal history, and elastic and chemical boundary conditions conspire to regulate this process in Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2O, during which coherent CuO nano-tweeds and spinel nano-cuboids evolve. We do so by combining structured synthesis routes, atomic-resolution microscopy and spectroscopy, density functional theory, and a phase field modeling framework that accurately predicts the emergent structure and local chemistry. This establishes a framework to appreciate, understand, and predict the macrostate spectrum available to a high-entropy system that is critical to rationalize property engineering opportunities.

Ferroelectric materials promise exceptional attributes including low power dissipation, fast operational speeds, enhanced endurance, and superior retention to revolutionize information technology. However, the practical application of ferroelectric-semiconductor memory devices has been significantly challenged by the incompatibility of traditional perovskite oxide ferroelectrics with metal-oxide-semiconductor technology. Recent discoveries of ferroelectricity in binary oxides such as Zn1-xMgxO and Hf1-xZrxO have been a focal point of research in ferroelectric information technology. This work investigates the ferroelectric properties of Zn1-xMgxO utilizing automated band excitation piezoresponse force microscopy. Our findings reveal the coexistence of two ferroelectric subsystems within Zn1-xMgxO. We propose a "fringing-ridge mechanism" of polarization switching that is characterized by initial lateral expansion of nucleation without significant propagation in depth, contradicting the conventional domain growth process observed in ferroelectrics. This unique polarization dynamics in Zn1-xMgxO suggests a new understanding of ferroelectric behavior, contributing to both the fundamental science of ferroelectrics and their application in information technology., Comment: 23 pages; 7 figures

The efficiency of phonon-mediated heat transport is limited by the intrinsic atomistic properties of materials, seemingly providing an upper limit to heat transfer in materials and across their interfaces. The typical speeds of conductive transport, which are inherently limited by the chemical bonds and atomic masses, dictate how quickly heat will move in solids. Given that phonon-polaritons, or coupled phonon-photon modes, can propagate at speeds approaching 1 percent of the speed of light - orders of magnitude faster than transport within a pure diffusive phonon conductor - we demonstrate that volume-confined, hyperbolic phonon-polariton(HPhP) modes supported by many biaxial polar crystals can couple energy across solid-solid interfaces at an order of magnitude higher rates than phonon-phonon conduction alone. Using pump-probe thermoreflectance with a mid-infrared, tunable, probe pulse with sub-picosecond resolution, we demonstrate remote and spectrally selective excitation of the HPhP modes in hexagonal boron nitride in response to radiative heating from a thermally emitting gold source. Our work demonstrates a new avenue for interfacial heat transfer based on broadband radiative coupling from a hot spot in a gold film to hBN HPhPs, independent of the broad spectral mismatch between the pump(visible) and probe(mid-IR) pulses employed. This methodology can be used to bypass the intrinsically limiting phonon-phonon conductive pathway, thus providing an alternative means of heat transfer across interfaces. Further, our time-resolved measurements of the temperature changes of the HPhP modes in hBN show that through polaritonic coupling, a material can transfer heat across and away from an interface at rates orders of magnitude faster than diffusive phonon speeds intrinsic to the material, thus demonstrating a pronounced thermal transport enhancement in hBN via phonon-polariton coupling.

Large density functional theory (DFT) databases are a treasure trove of energies, forces and stresses that can be used to train machine learned interatomic potentials for atomistic modeling. Herein, we employ structural relaxations from the AFLOW database to train moment tensor potentials (MTPs) for four carbide systems: HfTaC, HfZrC, MoWC and TaTiC. The resulting MTPs are used to relax ~6300 random symmetric structures, and are subsequently improved via active learning to generate robust potentials (RP) that can relax a wide variety of structures, and accurate potentials (AP) designed for the relaxation of low-energy systems. This protocol is shown to yield convex hulls that are indistinguishable from those predicted by AFLOW for the HfTaC, HfZrC and TaTiC systems, and in the case of the MoWC system to predict thermodynamically stable structures that are not found within AFLOW, highlighting the potential of the employed protocol within crystal structure prediction. Relaxation of over three hundred Mo$_{1-x}$W$_x$C stoichiometry crystals first with the RP then with the AP yields formation enthalpies that are in excellent agreement with those obtained via DFT.

Spinodal decomposition can improve a number of essential properties in materials, especially hardness. Yet, the theoretical prediction of the onset of this phenomenon (e.g., temperature) and its microstructure (e.g., wavelength) often requires input parameters coming from costly and time-consuming experimental efforts, hindering rational materials optimization. Here, we present a procedure where such parameters are not derived from experiments. First, we calculate the spinodal temperature by modeling nucleation in the solid solution while approaching the spinode boundary. Then, we compute the spinodal wavelength self-consistently using a few reasonable approximations. Our results show remarkable agreement with experiments and, for NiRh, the calculated yield strength due to spinodal microstructures surpasses even those of Ni-based superalloys. We believe that this procedure will accelerate the exploration of the complex materials experiencing spinodal decomposition, critical for their macroscopic properties., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Ferroelectrics are of practical interest for non-volatile data storage due to their reorientable, crystallographically defined polarization. Yet efforts to integrate conventional ferroelectrics into ultrathin memories have been frustrated by film-thickness limitations, which impede polarization reversal under low applied voltage. Wurtzite materials, including magnesium-substituted zinc oxide (Zn,Mg)O, have been shown to exhibit scalable ferroelectricity as thin films. In this work, we explain the origins of ferroelectricity in (Zn,Mg)O, showing that large strain fluctuations emerge locally in (Zn,Mg)O and can reduce local barriers to ferroelectric switching by more than 40%. We provide concurrent experimental and computational evidence of these effects by demonstrating polarization switching in ZnO/(Zn,Mg)O/ZnO heterostructures featuring built-in interfacial strain gradients. Using first principles calculations, {111} intrinsic stacking fault (ISF) energies in Group IVB, VB, and VIB high-entropy transition metal carbides are shown to be predictable from an optimized rule of mixtures based on the properties of the single metal carbide constituents present near the stacking fault. A composition-independent linear relationship is demonstrated between the ISF energies and the unstable stacking fault (USF) energies along the <112>{111} gamma surface slip path. Treating the ISF and USF energies as analogous to the heat of reaction and transition state barrier in chemical reactions, this linear relationship represents a new application of the Evans-Polanyi-Semenov principle. Further, a full defect energy distribution can be obtained from the predicted ISF energies with only the composition as an input for the mixed early-transition metal carbides. Applying a model that balances the elastic repulsion between partial dislocations with the distribution of ISF energies, we show that Shockley partial edge dislocations should remain bound for all valence electron concentration values up to about 9.6, even when the average stacking fault energy is negative., Comment: 10 pages

Wavelength-selective thermal emitters (WS-EMs) hold considerable appeal due to the scarcity of cost-effective, narrow-band sources in the mid-to-long-wave infrared spectrum. WS-EMs achieved via dielectric materials typically exhibit thermal emission peaks with high quality factors (Q factors), but their optical responses are prone to temperature fluctuations. Metallic EMs, on the other hand, show negligible drifts with temperature changes, but their Q factors usually hover around 10. In this study, we introduce and experimentally verify a novel EM grounded in plasmonic quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs) within a mirror-coupled system. Our design numerically delivers an ultra-narrowband single peak with a Q factor of approximately 64, and near-unity absorptance that can be freely tuned within an expansive band of more than 10 {\mu}m. By introducing air slots symmetrically, the Q factor can be further augmented to around 100. Multipolar analysis and phase diagrams are presented to elucidate the operational principle. Importantly, our infrared spectral measurements affirm the remarkable resilience of our designs' resonance frequency in the face of temperature fluctuations over 300 degrees Celsius. Additionally, we develop an effective impedance model based on the optical nanoantenna theory to understand how further tuning of the emission properties is achieved through precise engineering of the slot. This research thus heralds the potential of applying plasmonic quasi-BICs in designing ultra-narrowband, temperature-stable thermal emitters in mid-infrared. Polarization dynamics and domain structure evolution in ferroelectric Al$_{0.93}$B$_{0.07}$N are studied using piezoresponse force microscopy and spectroscopies in ambient and controlled atmosphere environments. The application of negative unipolar, and bipolar first-order reverse curve (FORC) waveforms leads to a protrusion-like feature on the Al$_{0.93}$B$_{0.07}$N surface and reduction of electromechanical response due to electrochemical reactivity. A surface change is also observed on the application of fast alternating current bias. At the same time, the application of positive biases does not lead to surface changes. Comparatively in a controlled glove box atmosphere, stable polarization patterns can be observed, with minuscule changes in surface morphology. This surface morphology change is not isolated to applying biases to free surface, a similar topographical change is also observed at the electrode edges when cycling a capacitor in ambient environment. The study suggests that surface electrochemical reactivity may have a significant impact on the functionality of this material in the ambient environment. However, even in the controlled atmosphere, the participation of the surface ions in polarization switching phenomena and ionic compensation is possible., Comment: 16 pages; 5 figures

Multifunctionality as a paradigm requires materials exhibiting multiple superior properties. Integrating second-order optical nonlinearity and large bandgap with piezoelectricity could, for example, enable broadband, strain-tunable photonics. Though very different phenomena at distinct frequencies, both second-order optical nonlinearity and piezoelectricity are third-rank polar tensors present only in acentric crystal structures. However, simultaneously enhancing both phenomena is highly challenging since it involves competing effects with tradeoffs. Recently, a large switchable ferroelectric polarization of ~ 80 uC cm-2 was reported in Zn1-xMgxO films. Here, ferroelectric Zn1-xMgxO is demonstrated to be a platform that hosts simultaneously a 30% increase in the electronic bandgap, a 50% enhancement in the second harmonic generation coefficients, and a near 200% improvement in the piezoelectric coefficients over pure ZnO. These enhancements are shown to be due to a 400% increase in the electronic anharmonicity and a ~200% decrease in the ionic anharmonicity with Mg substitution. Precisely controllable periodic ferroelectric domain gratings are demonstrated down to 800 nm domain width, enabling ultraviolet quasi-phase-matched optical harmonic generation as well as domain-engineered piezoelectric devices.

Ferroelectric polarization switching is one common example of a process that occurs via nucleation and growth, and understanding switching kinetics is crucial for applications such as ferroelectric memory. Here we describe and interpret anomalous switching dynamics in the wurtzite nitride thin film ferroelectrics Al0.7Sc0.3N and Al0.94B0.06N using a general model that can be directly applied to other abrupt transitions that proceed via nucleation and growth. When substantial growth and impingement occur while nucleation rate is increasing, such as in these wurtzite ferroelectrics under high electric fields, abrupt polarization reversal leads to very large Avrami coefficients (e.g., n = 11), inspiring an extension of the KAI (Kolmogorov-Avrami-Ishibashi) model. We apply this extended model to two related but distinct scenarios that crossover between (typical) behavior described by sequential nucleation and growth and a more abrupt transition arising from significant growth prior to peak nucleation rate. This work therefore provides more complete description of general nucleation and growth kinetics applicable to any system while specifically addressing both the anomalously abrupt polarization reversal behavior in new wurtzite ferroelectrics., Comment: 4 figures

High entropy carbides (HECs) are a promising new class of ultra-high temperature ceramics that could provide novel material solutions for leading edges of hypersonic vehicles, which can reach temperatures above 3500C and experience extreme thermal gradients. Although the mechanical and thermal properties of HECs have been studied extensively at room temperature, few works have examined HEC properties at high temperatures or considered these materials' responses to thermal shock. In this work, we measure the thermal conductivity of a five-cation HEC up to 1200C. We find that thermal conductivity increases with temperature, consistent with trends demonstrated in single-metal carbides. We also measure thermal conductivity of an HEC deposited with varying CH4 flow rate, and find that although thermal conductivity is reduced when carbon content surpasses stoichiometric concentrations, the films all exhibited the same temperature dependent trends regardless of carbon content. To compare the thermal shock resistance of HECs with a refractory carbide, we conduct pulsed laser ablation measurements to determine the fluence threshold the HECs can withstand before damaging. As various property studies continue to emerge on high entropy and entropy-stabilized ceramics, we seek further understanding of property changes across the phase boundary between \enquote{high-entropy} and \enquote{entropy-stabilized}. The thermal and mechanical properties of bulk ceramic entropy stabilized oxide composition Mg$_{0.2}$Co$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Cu$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.2}$O are investigated across this critical transition temperature via the transient plane-source method, temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction, and nano-indentation. Thermal conductivity remains constant within uncertainty across the multi-to-single phase transition at a value of ~2.5 W/mK, while the linear coefficient of thermal expansion increases nearly 24 % from 10.8 to 14.1 x 10$^{-6}$ K$^{-1}$. This paper reports the fatigue and retention behavior for Al1-xBxN thin films, a member of the novel family of wurtzite ferroelectrics, with an emphasis on the role of capacitor architecture. By modifying the capacitor architecture, and thus thermal and electrical boundary conditions, we create insight regarding the relative importance of intrinsic and extrinsic contributors to the degradation tendencies. Our experiments suggest that bipolar cycling of metal (Pt/W)/Al0.93B0.07N/W/Al2O3 film stacks first induced wake-up, then a region of constant switchable polarization. On additional cycling, the film leakage current increased, and then films underwent dielectric breakdown. For unpatterned first generation Al0.93B0.07N films with 100 nm thick Pt top electrodes survive ~104 bipolar cycles, whereas films with 1000 nm W top electrodes survive ~10^5 cycles before thermal dielectric breakdown. Sentaurus modeling was used to design an SU8 field plate which improved the performance to ~10^6 fatigue cycles. It was found that the thermal failures during fatigue were not due to surface flashover events but were associated with hard breakdown events in the dielectric. The films showed excellent retention of the stored polarization state. As expected, data retention was slightly inferior in the opposite state (OS) measurements. However, it is noted that even after 3.6x10^6 sec (1000 hr). at 200{\deg}C, the OS signal margin still exceeded 200 uC/cm2. The predicted OS retention is 82% after 10 years baking at 200oC.

We develop and implement an automated experiment in multimodal imaging to probe structural, chemical, and functional behaviors in complex materials and elucidate the dominant physical mechanisms that control device function. Here the emergence of non-linear electromechanical responses in piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) is explored. Non-linear responses in PFM can originate from multiple mechanisms, including intrinsic material responses often controlled by domain structure, surface topography that affects the mechanical phenomena at the tip-surface junction, and, potentially, the presence of surface contaminants. Using an automated experiment to probe the origins of non-linear behavior in model ferroelectric lead titanate (PTO) and ferroelectric Al0.93B0.07N films, it was found that PTO showed asymmetric nonlinear behavior across a/c domain walls and a broadened high nonlinear response region around c/c domain walls. In contrast, for Al0.93B0.07N, well-poled regions showed high linear piezoelectric responses paired with low non-linear responses and regions that were multidomain indicated low linear responses and high nonlinear responses. We show that formulating dissimilar exploration strategies in deep kernel learning as alternative hypotheses allows for establishing the preponderant physical mechanisms behind the non-linear behaviors, suggesting that this approach automated experiments can potentially discern between competing physical mechanisms. Disorder enhances desired properties, as well as creating new avenues for synthesizing materials. For instance, hardness and yield stress are improved by solid-solution strengthening, a result of distortions and atomic size mismatches. Thermo-chemical stability is increased by the preference of chemically disordered mixtures for high-symmetry super-lattices. Vibrational thermal conductivity is decreased by force-constant disorder without sacrificing mechanical strength and stiffness. Thus, high-entropy ceramics propel a wide range of applications: from wear resistant coatings and thermal and environmental barriers to catalysts, batteries, thermoelectrics and nuclear energy management. Fermi level engineering and mechanical properties evolution in high entropy carbides are investigated by theoretical and experimental means. Massive elemental diversity in high entropy ceramics broadens the compositional space but imposes great challenges in composition selection and property investigation. We have utilized the valence electron concentration (VEC) descriptor to design and predict properties of high entropy carbides. The VEC regulates the Fermi energy and systematically alters the bonding characteristics of materials. As a result, mechanical properties evolve as function of the VEC. At VEC 8.4, the strong {\sigma} bonding states stem from filled overlapping metal d and carbon p orbitals, which results in maximum resistance to shear deformation and highest hardness. Beyond or below the optimum VEC point of 8.4, mechanical response degrades due to filling or emptying of energy orbitals that facilitates shear deformation. Furthermore, the optimum VEC point can shift based on the constituent metals that formulate the high entropy carbide. Our analyses demonstrate strong correlation between calculated hardness and shear modulus. As an experimental complement, a set of high entropy carbides are synthesized, and mechanical properties investigated. The measured hardness follows theoretical predictions and the highest hardness of ~30 GPa is achieved at VEC 8.4. In contrast, hardness decreases by 50% when VEC is 9.4. Energy and charge transfer across metal-semiconductor interfaces are the fundamental driving forces for a broad range of applications, such as computing, energy harvesting, and photodetection. However, the exact roles and physical separation of these two phenomena remains unclear, particularly in plasmonically-excited systems or cases of strong nonequilibrium. We report on a series of ultrafast plasmonic measurements that provide a direct measure of electronic distributions, both spatially and temporally, following optical excitation of a metal-semiconductor heterostructure. For the first time, we explicitly show that in cases of strong non-equilibrium, a novel energy transduction mechanism arises at the metal/semiconductor interface. We find that hot electrons in the metal contact transfer their energy to pre-existing electrons in the semiconductor, without transfer of charge. These experimental results findings are well-supported by both rigorous multilayer optical modeling and first-principle, ab initio calculations.

High-harmonic generation (HHG) from a compact, solid-state medium is highly desirable for applications such as coherent attosecond pulse generation and extreme ultra-violet (EUV) spectroscopy, yet the typically weak conversion of pump light to HHG can largely hinder its applications. Here, we use a material operating in its epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) region, where the real part of its permittivity vanishes, to greatly boost the efficiency of the HHG process at the microscopic level. In experiments, we report high-harmonic emission up to the 9th order directly from a low-loss, solid-state ENZ medium: indium-doped cadmium oxide, with an excitation intensity at the GW cm-2 level. Furthermore, the observed HHG signal exhibits a pronounced spectral red-shift as well as linewidth broadening, resulting from the photo-induced electron heating and the consequent time-dependent resonant frequency of the ENZ film. Our results provide a novel nanophotonic platform for strong field physics, reveal new degrees of freedom for spectral and temporal control of HHG, and open up possibilities of compact solid-state attosecond light sources.

High-entropy materials have attracted considerable interest due to the combination of useful properties and promising applications. Predicting their formation remains the major hindrance to the discovery of new systems. Here we propose a descriptor - entropy forming ability - for addressing synthesizability from first principles. The formalism, based on the energy distribution spectrum of randomized calculations, captures the accessibility of equally-sampled states near the ground state and quantifies configurational disorder capable of stabilizing high-entropy homogeneous phases. The methodology is applied to disordered refractory 5-metal carbides - promising candidates for high-hardness applications. The descriptor correctly predicts the ease with which compositions can be experimentally synthesized as rock-salt high-entropy homogeneous phases, validating the ansatz, and in some cases, going beyond intuition. Several of these materials exhibit hardness up to 50% higher than rule of mixtures estimations. Polaritonic materials that support epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) modes offer the opportunity to design light-matter interactions at the nanoscale through phenomena like resonant perfect absorption and extreme sub-wavelength light concentration. To date, the utility of ENZ modes is limited in propagating polaritonic systems by a relatively flat spectral dispersion, which gives ENZ modes small group velocities and short propagation lengths. Here we overcome this constraint by coupling ENZ modes to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes in doped cadmium oxide ENZ-on-SPP bilayers. What results is a strongly coupled hybrid mode, characterized by strong anti-crossing and a large spectral splitting on the order of 1/3 of the mode frequency. The resonant frequencies, dispersion, and coupling of these polaritonic-hybrid-epsilon-near-zero (PH-ENZ) modes are controlled by tailoring the modal oscillator strength and the ENZ-SPP spectral overlap, which can potentially be utilized for actively tunable strong coupling at the nanoscale. PH-ENZ modes ultimately leverage the most desirable characteristics of both ENZ and SPP modes through simultaneous strong interior field confinement and mode propagation.

Optical nonlocalities are elusive and hardly observable in traditional plasmonic materials like noble and alkali metals. Here we report experimental observation of viscoelastic nonlocalities in the infrared optical response of doped cadmium-oxide, epsilon-near-zero nanofilms. The nonlocality is detectable thanks to the low damping rate of conduction electrons and the virtual absence of interband transitions at infrared wavelengths. We describe the motion of conduction electrons using a hydrodynamic model for a viscoelastic fluid, and find excellent agreement with experimental results. The electrons elasticity blue-shifts the infrared plasmonic resonance associated with the main epsilon-near-zero mode, and triggers the onset of higher-order resonances due to the excitation of electron-pressure modes above the bulk plasma frequency. We also provide evidence of the existence of nonlocal damping, i.e., viscosity, in the motion of optically-excited conduction electrons using a combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry data and predictions based on the viscoelastic hydrodynamic model., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

We present experimental measurements of the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) from $77 - 500$ K across isolated heteroepitaxially grown ZnO films on GaN substrates. These data provide an assessment of the assumptions that drive the phonon gas model-based diffuse mismatch models (DMM) and atomistic Green's function (AGF) formalisms for predicting TBC. Our measurements, when compared to previous experimental data, suggest that the TBC can be influenced by long wavelength, zone center modes in a material on one side of the interface as opposed to the "vibrational mismatch" concept assumed in the DMM; this disagreement is pronounced at high temperatures. At room temperature, we measure the ZnO/GaN TBC as $490\lbrack +150, -110\rbrack$ MW m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$. The disagreement among the DMM and AGF and the experimental data these elevated temperatures suggests a non-negligible contribution from additional modes contributing to TBC that not accounted for in the fundamental assumptions of these harmonic formalisms, such as inelastic scattering. Given the high quality of these ZnO/GaN interface, these results provide an invaluable critical and quantitive assessment of the accuracy of assumptions in the current state of the art of computational approaches for predicting the phonon TBC across interfaces., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures
