Rome has the world's longest historical record of felt earthquakes, with more than 100 events during the last 2,600 years. However, no destructive earthquake has been reported in the sources and all of the greatest damage suffered in the past has been attributed to far-field events. While this fact suggests that a moderate seismotectonic regime characterizes the Rome area, no study has provided a comprehensive explanation for the lack of strong earthquakes in the region. Through the analysis of the focal mechanism and the morphostructural setting of the epicentral area of a "typical" moderate earthquake (ML = 3.3) that recently occurred in the northern urban area of Rome, we demonstrate that this event reactivated a buried segment of an ancient fault generated under both a different and a stronger tectonic regime than that which is presently active. We also show that the evident structural control over the drainage network in this area reflects an extreme degree of fragmentation of a set of buried faults generated under two competing stress fields throughout the Pleistocene. Small faults and a present-day weaker tectonic regime with respect to that acting during the Pleistocene explain the lack of strong seismicity and imply that a large earthquake could not reasonably occur. 40Ar/39Ar geochronology constraints to aggradational phases and grainsize variations show that the sedimentary filling of the Liri fluvial-lacustrine basin (central Italy) recorded the occurrence of deglaciation events associated with global meltwater pulses. Integrating these data with those from the Tiber River catchment basin, we find a precise match between the ages of gravel deposition and the occurrence of moderate sea-level rise events which anticipate those more marked during the glacial termination V and IV in the Red Sea relative sea level curve. Such correspondence suggests that gravel deposition is facilitated by melting of Apennine mountain range glaciers, which provide the water transport energy and a surplus of clastic input to the rivers draining the mountain regions and flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Therefore, the thick gravel beds intercalated in the sedimentary filling of the catchment basins of the major rivers in central Italy may be regarded as an equivalent proxy of large deglaciation events, similar to the ice-rafted debris in northern Atlantic. Consistent with this hypothesis, we also show the close correspondence between the occurrence of particularly mild (warmer) minima of the mean summer insolation at 65° N and these early aggradational phases, as well as with other anomalous early sea-level rises occurred 750 ka and 540 ka at the onset of glacial termination VIII and VI, and 40 ka at the onset of the so-called Heinrich events. Observational records are essential for assessing long-term changes in our climate. However, these records are more often than not influenced by residual non-climatic factors which must be detected and adjusted prior to their usage. Ideally, measurement uncertainties should be properly quantified and validated. In the context of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), a novel approach, named RHARM (Radiosounding HARMonization), has been developed to provide a harmonized dataset of temperature, humidity and wind profiles along with an estimation of the measurement uncertainties for about 650 radiosounding stations globally. The RHARM method has been applied to IGRA daily (0000 and 1200 UTC) radiosonde data holdings on 16 standard pressure levels (from 1000 to 10 hPa) from 1978 to present. Relative humidity adjustment and data provision has been limited to 250 hPa owing to pervasive issues on sensors' performance in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. The applied adjustments are interpolated to all reported significant levels to retain information content contained within each individual ascent profile. Each historical station time series is harmonized using two distinct methods. Firstly, the most recent period of the records when modern radiosonde models have been in operation at each station (typically starting between 2004 and 2010 but varying on a station-by-station basis) are post-processed and adjusted using reference datasets from the GCOS Reference Upper Air Network (GRUAN) and from the 2010 WMO/CIMO (World Meteorological Organization/Commission for Instruments and Methods of Observation) radiosonde intercomparison. Subsequently, at each mandatory pressure level, the remaining historical data are scanned backward in time to detect structural breaks due to prolonged systematic effects in the measurements and then adjusted to homogenize the time series. This paper describes the dataset portion related to the adjustment of post-2004 measurements only. A step-by-step description of the algorithm is reported and comparisons with GRUAN and atmospheric reanalysis data for temperature and relative humidity data are discussed. The evaluation shows that the strongest benefit of RHARM compared to existing products is related to the substantive adjustments applied to relative humidity time series for values below 15% and above 55% as well as to the provision of the uncertainties for all variables. Uncertainties have been validated using the ECMWF reanalysis short-range forecast outputs. The RHARM algorithm is the first to provide homogenized time series of temperature, relative humidity and wind profiles alongside an estimation of the observational uncertainty for each single observation at each pressure level. In the present work, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films were produced by spin-coating, and applying different conditions of quenching, in order to investigate the dominant mechanism of the β-phase formation. The influence of the polymer/solvent mass ratio of the solution, the rotational speed of the spin-coater and the crystallization temperature of the film on both the β-phase content and the piezoelectric coefficient (d33) were investigated. This study demonstrates that the highest values of d33 are obtained when thinner films, produced with a lower concentration of polymer in the solvent (i.e., 20 wt.%), go through quenching in water, at room temperature. Whereas, in the case of higher polymer concentration (i.e., 30 wt.%), the best value of d33 (~30 pm/V) was obtained through quenching in liquid nitrogen, at the temperature of 77 K. We believe that in the former case, phase inversion is mainly originated by electrostatic interaction of PVDF with the polar molecules of water, due to the low viscosity of the polymer solution. On the contrary, in the latter case, due to higher viscosity of the solution, mechanical stretching induced on the polymer during spin-coating deposition is the main factor inducing self-alignment of the β-phase. Recently, graphene-polymer composites gained a central role in advanced stress and strain sensing. A fundamental step in the production of epoxy-composites filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) consists in the exfoliation and dispersion of expanded graphite in a proper solvent, in the mixing of the resulting GNP suspension with the polymer matrix, and in the final removal of the solvent from the composite before curing through evaporation. The effects of traces of residual solvent on polymer curing process are usually overlooked, even if it has been found that even a small amount of residual solvent can affect the mechanical properties of the final composite. In this paper, we show that residual traces of N , N '-Dimethylformamide (DMF) in vinylester epoxy composites can induce relevant variations of the electrical, mechanical and electromechanical properties of the cured GNP-composite. To this purpose, a complete analysis of the morphological and structural characteristics of the composite samples produced using different solvent mixtures (combining acetone and DMF) is performed. Moreover, electrical, mechanical and electromechanical properties of the produced composites are assessed. In particular, the effect on the piezoresistive response of the use of DMF in the solvent mixture is analyzed using an experimental strain dependent percolation law to fit the measured electromechanical data. It is shown that the composites realized using a higher amount of DMF are characterized by a higher electrical conductivity and by a strong reduction of Young's Modulus., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

We present four new 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages of tephra layers from an aggradational succession (Valle Giulia Formation) near the mouth of the Tiber Valley in Rome that was deposited in response to sea-level rise during Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 13. These new ages, integrated with seven previously determined ages, provide the only extant independent, radioisotopic age constraint on glacial termination VI and on the duration of MIS 13 sea-level rise. The new geochronologic constraints suggest a long duration for the period of sea-level rise (533 ± 2 through 498 ± 2 ka) encompassing two consecutive positive peaks of the δ 18 O curve (substages 13.3 and 13.1). Consistently, the litho-stratigraphic features of the sedimentary record account for two aggradational phases separated by an intervening erosional phase. Moreover, the ages obtained for this study give us the opportunity to compare the timing of the sea-level fluctuations inferred from the stratigraphic record and that provided by the astrochronologic calibration of the Oxygen isotopic curves, and to assess the calibrations of 40 Ar/ 39 Ar standards. Results of this comparison indicate that the best match is for an age of 1.186 Ma for the Alder Creek Rhyolite sanidine and 28.201 Ma for the Fish Canyon Tuff sanidine.
