Sustained, large amplitude and tunable birefringenceinduced oscillations are obtained in a spin-vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (spin-VCSEL). Experimental evidence is provided using a spin-VCSEL operating at 1300 nm, under continuous-wave optical pumping and at room temperature. Numerical and stability analyses are performed to interpret the experiments and to identify the combined effects of pump ellipticity, spin relaxation rate, and cavity birefringence. Importantly, the frequency of the induced oscillations is determined by the device's birefringence rate, which can be tuned to very large values. This opens the path for ultrafast spin-lasers operating at record frequencies exceeding those possible in traditional semiconductor lasers and with ample expected impact in disparate disciplines (e.g., datacomms, spectroscopy). Polarization switching (PS) in 1550nm-VCSELs under single and double pulsed polarized optical injection is investigated experimentally and in theory. ‘Normal’ and ‘reverse’ PS were achieved, respectively, when the device was subject to single and double optical injection. Speed operation enhancement is observed for ‘reverse’ PS under double polarized optical injection. Also, the minimum injection power requirements for both ‘normal’ and ‘reverse’ PS have been analyzed showing significant differences for the two investigated cases. Furthermore, we have also investigated numerically the influence of important system parameters, such as the normalized bias current, the injection field strength and the linewidth enhancement factor in the optimal operation conditions for both types of PS. We study polarization switching and hysteresis in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) subject to an orthogonal optical injection, such that the polarization of the injected light is perpendicular to that of the free-running VCSEL. We use the framework of the spin-flip model to characterize the polarization state of the VCSEL as a function of the frequency detuning. With appropriated injection conditions, the orthogonal polarization turns on and locks to the injected field. Increasing and decreasing the detuning across the two locking boundaries results either in narrow or wide hysteresis cycles, or even in irreversible switching. We study the dynamics of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with continuous-wave (cw) orthogonal optical injection from a tunable laser. We use the dynamical properties of polarization bistability and the interplay with internal or external noise to demonstrate numerically a reliable logic output to two logic inputs encoded in the optical frequency of the injected light. This all-optical configuration is more than ten times faster than the electro-optical implementation and has the advantage of operating at constant injection power. Fil: Salvide, Matias. 8 páginas, 8 figuras, 1 tabla., Modal selection induced by parallel polarized optical injection in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) emitting in two transverse modes is analyzed from a theoretical point of view. We show that the selection of the fundamental transverse mode can be achieved when the two transverse modes have parallel polarizations. This selection is accompanied by locking of the fundamental mode to the optically injected signal for large enough values of the wavelength detuning between the fundamental mode and the externally injected signal. The injected power needed to induce modal selection grows as the VCSEL bias current is increased for small positive wavelength detunings, while it is independent on the bias current for larger wavelength detunings. That power exhibits a minimum with respect to the injection wavelength at a value λmin that is slightly longer than the wavelength of the fundamental mode of the solitary VCSEL. We also show that the selection process exhibits bistable behavior when the wavelength of the optically injected signal increases beyond λmin . The width of the bistable region increases linearly with the wavelength of the optically injected signal. Our results show that λmin also increases linearly with the VCSEL bias current. Higher order transverse mode selection and bistability, similar to those found for the fundamental mode, are obtained when the optical injection wavelength is close to that of the higher order mode.
