Baby, It's Cold Outside!: Being neither a Canadian lumberjack nor an Icelandic lighthouse keeper, Frank Szabo, Director of Men, bundled up for last week's soccer game against Miami. The brisk weather that moved into Florida sent temperatures in Lakeland as low as 40 degrees, requiring college maintenance personnel to fire up furnances all over campus. Temperatures within the next few days, soared back up into the high 70's, and it is hoped that sunny skies will predominate the rest of November. But even if those cold spells come, an official athletic score keeper and announcer has to be on the sidelines. (p. 4). In top picture, Southern's Jim Dawsey and Bruce Bain collide in scoring attempt as the Miami goalie recovers. However, could this be the ghost of a long lost Hindu who has come back to haunt his favorite temple? Or is it just a typical Halloween visitor? Shelby and Marie Shelby Foundation, Sarasota, given annually to science majors with superior academic records. Fron row, from left, they are Deborah Louise Gotwalt, Lakeland; Patricia Ann Roberts, Lakeland; Frances M. Long, Jacksonville; Elizabeth Noel Martel, Levittown, N.Y.; and Sharon Marie Smolenyak, Miami; back row--Eric Barton, St. Petersburg; Ronald Ulm, Fort Lauderdale, and Thomas Wasser, Lyons, N.Y. (p. 4). Roy Lott, of the 1926 Florida Southern football team, then called the "world's lightest quarterback", is shown here with Bob Bowden, tackle on Birmingham Southern's team. Lott weighed 112 pounds while Bowden was within a few pounds of twice as much. Lott was regarded as a "marvel at throwing passes" in 1926. Lott is now in Florida Southern's Admissions Department, but is not quite at his playing weight. (p. 5) -- This is Florida Southern's first football team, formed in 1912-1913. In their first season of competition, the Southern team proved successful by winning three of their five games, losing twice. The identity of many of the above players is unknown. (p. 5)., 1-6

vol. 80 no. 4, Fraternities Adopt Seal: The Interfraternity Council, "in a move to promote unity within the Council and understanding from without," has unanimously adopted this as the official emblem of the IFC. The seal was approved by the presidents and representatives of the 11 campus social fraternities at last Monday's weekly meeting. According to Guy Colado, IFC president, "Our Council strives for cooperation and strength among the Greek houses on our campus, and this emblem is representative of it." (p. 1) -- BISHOP WEBB (p. 1). MACK GIEGER. . . from military to college life. (p. 2). WATER SHORTAGE?: Believe it or not this picture was not made from ground level. The mammoth water sprinkler is located on the athletic field between Ordway Arts and Joseph-Reynolds. The spray from it makes the most powerful water pistol look pathetic. (p. 3) -- ELAINE CENTER (p. 3). We Know That's Water Dr. Gilbert, But Why Don't You Pass It On To Mr. Bland? (p. 4). Southern's Bruce Bain moves in for an early score attempt in last Friday's 3-1 defeat of St. Leo. (p. 5). VOLLEYBALL ACTION AT ITS BEST: Both Sig Ep and Theta Chi continued to dominate "A" League competition while in "B" League play four teams are deadlocked for the lead. Last week's schedule included many top games in both leagues. (p. 6)., 1-6

The article reports on the impact of high costs and slow spending on apparel manufacturers. Richard Noll, chief executive officer of Hanesbrands, said in a recent conference call to Wall Street on the company's earnings that he is beginning to see systemic rising input cost. Noll explained that cotton has broken out of its trading range, and that other costs have worked their way through the value chain. Producers also are contending with rising cotton prices.
