Abstract

This paper evaluates P-12 American school teachers’ perceptions of a six-session training that used the trauma-informed Trust-based Relational Intervention (TBRI) system with teachers in one socioeconomically vulnerable school district during the 2018-19 school year. The research questions explored the training participants’ (n=41) opinions about the TBRI training, as well as the opinions of the school district’s veteran teachers (n=52) about trends related to student and teacher mental health in schools over the last five years. The training participants found the TBRI training series socially acceptable and valuable. Veteran teachers in the district where the study was conducted reported increased levels of emotional distress in students and in themselves., peer-reviewed

Abstract

An adolescent female with multiple handicaps and a long history severely disruptive behavior participated in a functional assessment linked directly to specific revisions in her school curriculum. During Phase 1, reversal designs were used to test hypotheses pertaining to antecedent and curricular influences on problem behavior. During Phase 2, a multiple baseline across afternoon and morning time periouds demonstrated that the curricular revisions were effective in eliminating severely disruptive behavior and increasing on-task responding. Data also showed that inappropriate 'psychotic' speech was reduced and appropriate social interactions were increased. Follow-up results showed that the changes were maintained throughout the school year. Questionnaire data provided social validation of the procedures and outcomes. The finding are discussed in relation to their implications for functional assessment, individualized curricula, and positive programming for students with disabilities and serious behavior problems. Dept. of Health figures show that the number of children aged 10-14 admitted to psychiatric hospitals in the UK rose by 65% between 1985 and 1990 yet educational provision for severely disturbed children is being cut. Milton Ford School in Portsmouth, England, catered for 28 severely emotionally-disturbed children whom no other school in the country could handle, but was closed at the end of the summer term 1994. Opponents of the closure see Milton Ford as a casualty of Hampshire's policy of placing greater emphasis on the national curriculum than on children's emotional needs.

Information and communication technology (ICT) has had a number of benefits for the pupils at Fulford, a school for emotionally and behaviourally disturbed 11- to 16-year-olds in Bristol, England. Deputy head Colin Fletcher explains that Beon, the Bristol Education On-Line Network project, provided Fulford with 20 new PCs, enabling pupils to have access to ICT for much of the day. He points out that computers are ideal for children who are hugely underfunctioning because they do not judge people. Fulford's main aim in using computers is to raise pupils' self-esteem.
