Silica (SiO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in dermal products. Their skin sensitization potential, especially their effects in combination with known sensitizers, is poorly studied in vitro and their sensitization inconsistently reported in animal studies. In this study, cellular assays were used to identify different steps of sensitization, the activation of keratinocytes and dendritic cells, when cells were exposed to these NPs in the absence and presence of sensitizers. Cellular systems included HaCaT keratinocytes and U937 (U-SENS™) alone, as well as different co-culture systems of THP-1 cells with HaCaT cells (COCAT) and with primary keratinocytes. The effect of NPs differed between co-cultures and U-SENS™, whereas co-cultures with either primary keratinocytes or HaCaT cells responded similarly. Pre-exposure to ZnO NPs increased the U-SENS™ assay response to 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene six-fold. The COCAT increase was maximally four-fold for the combination of SiO2 and trans cinnamaldehyde. When the THP-1 cells were separated from the keratinocytes by a membrane, the response of the co-culture system was more similar to U-SENS™. The direct contact with keratinocytes decreased the modulating effect of TiO2 and ZnO NPs but suggested an increase in response to sensitizers following dermal contact with SiO2 NPs. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic and age-related lung disease that has few treatment options. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in the introduction and development of IPF. In the present study, we developed multifunctional Cobalt (Co)–Manganese (Mn) complex oxide nanoparticles (Co-MnNPs), which can scavenge multiple types of ROS. Benefiting from ROS scavenging activities and good biosafety, Co-MnNPs can suppress canonical and non-canonical TGF-β pathways and, thus, inhibit the activation of fibroblasts and the productions of extracellular matrix. Furthermore, the scavenging of ROS by Co-MnNPs reduce the LPS-induced expressions of pro-inflammatory factors in macrophages, by suppressing NF-κB signaling pathway. Therefore, Co-MnNPs can reduce the excessive extracellular matrix deposition and inflammatory responses in lungs and, thus, alleviate pulmonary fibrosis induced by bleomycin (BLM) in mice. As cerium oxide nanoparticles (nCeO2) continue to infiltrate aquatic environments, the resulting health risks to exposed aquatic organisms are becoming evident. Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes are integral to the detoxification processes in these species. Herein, we conducted a genomic analysis of CYPs in Daphnia magna, encompassing phylogenetic relationships, gene structure, and chromosomal localization. We identified twenty-six CYPs in D. magna, categorizing them into four clans and seven families, distributed across six chromosomes and one unanchored scaffold. The encoded CYP proteins varied in length from 99 to 585 amino acids, with molecular weights ranging from 11.6 kDa to 66.4 kDa. A quantitative real-time PCR analysis demonstrated a significant upregulation of CYP4C1.4, CYP4C1.5, CYP4C1.6, CYP4c3.3, and CYP4c3.6 in D. magna exposed to 150 mg/L nCeO2 for 24 h. The transcript levels of CYP4C1.3, CYP18a1, CYP4C1.1, and CYP4c3.9 were notably downregulated in D. magna exposed to 10 mg/L nCeO2 for 48 h. A further transcriptomic analysis identified differential expression patterns of eight CYP genes, including CYP4C1.3, in response to nCeO2 exposure. The differential regulation observed across most of the 26 CYPs highlights their potential role in xenobiotic detoxification in D. magna, thereby enhancing our understanding of CYP-mediated toxicological responses to metal nanoparticles in aquatic invertebrates. Their unique properties, significantly different from their bulk counterparts, make them promising materials for a wide range of applications in fields such as medicine, electronics, catalysis, environmental remediation, and energy storage. The precise control of MONs' properties, including size, shape, composition, crystallinity, and surface chemistry, is significant for optimizing their performance. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of synthesis methods of MONs. Correlation between synthesis parameters and properties highlights that creating nanomaterials with defined and controlled dimensions is a complex task that requires a deep understanding of various factors. Metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) are widely used in medicine and environmental remediation because of their unique properties. However, their size, surface area, and reactivity can cause toxicity, potentially leading to oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular or DNA damage. In this study, a nano-quantitative structure–toxicity relationship (nano-QSTR) model was initially developed to assess zebrafish toxicity for 24 MONPs. Previously established 23 first- and second-generation periodic table descriptors, along with five newly proposed third-generation descriptors derived from the periodic table, were employed. Subsequently, to enhance the quality and predictive capability of the nano-QSTR model, a nano-quantitative read across structure–toxicity relationship (nano-qRASTR) model was created. This model integrated read-across descriptors with modeled descriptors from the nano-QSTR approach. The nano-qRASTR model, featuring three attributes, outperformed the previously reported simple QSTR model, despite having one less MONP. This study highlights the effective utilization of the nano-qRASTR algorithm in situations with limited data for modeling, demonstrating superior goodness-of-fit, robustness, and predictability (R2 = 0.81, Q2LOO = 0.70, Q2F1/R2PRED = 0.76) compared to simple QSTR models. Finally, the developed nano-qRASTR model was applied to predict toxicity data for an external dataset comprising 35 MONPs, addressing gaps in zebrafish toxicity assessment.

This study reports an electrochemical sensor for detecting aspartame using square wave voltammetry (SWV) on ZnONP/BDDNP electrode. ZnONP/BDDNP was able to oxidize aspartame at a potential of 0.34 V in a phosphate buffer solution pH 2.0 with a current of 80.1 µA. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 0.07 µM, the limit of quantitation (LOQ) was 0.25 µM and sensitivity was 1.23 µA µM-1. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was 1.6%, less than 5% indicating that ZnONP/BDDNP has good precision. ZnONP/BDDNP showed better results compared with the BDDNP electrode. The developed method showed good linearity in the concentration range of 30-100 µM. This method was successfully applied to determine aspartame in beverage samples with a recovery range of 85-110%. This shows that ZnONP/BDDNP with the suggested method is potentially applied in practical used.

The widespread application of nanoparticles (NPs) in agriculture has not only enhanced the efficiency of agrochemical use but also introduced environmental pollution, potentially impacting human health through absorption and accumulation in edible plants. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the toxic effects and ecological risks of Cu2O nanoparticles (nCu2O) in the life cycle of soybean, and to provide a theoretical basis for the safe application of NPs in agriculture. Soybeans were grown in natural soil modified with nCu2O, bulk cuprous oxide (bCu2O) and copper sulfate (CuSO4) at concentrations of 0, 50, 200, and 800 mg/kg. Samples and grains from treated soybeans were collected at the flowering, podding, and seed-filling stages for analysis. The results indicated that treatments with nCu2O, bCu2O, and Cu2+ reduced the chlorophyll content in soybean leaves, thereby affecting photosynthesis. Significant reductions were observed in the net photosynthetic rate (Pn), the transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs), the quantum yield of photosystem II (Y(II)), photochemical quenching (qP), and the electron transport rate (ETR) at high concentrations. However, the toxicity of nCu2O to photosynthesis recovers as the plant grows. Almost all treatments increased the levels of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT) and reduced oxidative stress. In the nCu2O and bCu2O treatments, grain protein content was significantly reduced, while fat and water content increased. Phosphorus (P) content decreased, whereas sulfur (S), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) contents increased. The accumulation of copper in plants followed the order nCu2O > bCu2O > Cu2+, with the bCu2O treatment being slightly more toxic than the nCu2O treatment, and both being more toxic than the Cu2+ treatment. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is growing into a major public health crisis worldwide. The reducing alternatives to conventional agents starve for novel antimicrobial agents. Due to their unique magnetic properties and excellent biocompatibility, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are the most preferable nanomaterials in biomedicine, including antibacterial therapy, primarily through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. IONP characteristics, including their size, shape, surface charge, and superparamagnetism, influence their biodistribution and antibacterial activity. External magnetic fields, foreign metal doping, and surface, size, and shape modification improve the antibacterial effect of IONPs. The timing of the grape harvest is a critical decision for winemakers, as it greatly impacts the quality and organoleptic characteristics of the resulting red wines. One key indicator for determining the optimal harvest time is the phenolic content of the grapes. As the berries ripen, phenolic compounds in the grape skin cells migrate from the seeds to the pulp and finally to the skin. However, monitoring these phenolic changes, particularly in the seeds, presents a challenge. This research addresses this problem by developing a novel technique to track the phenolic composition of seeds during ripening. The objective is to provide a reliable method for winemakers to monitor the phenolic evolution and improve harvest decision-making.In this study, a multisensory system consisting of four electrochemical enzymatic carbon paste sensors, modified with tyrosinase and electrocatalytic materials (AuNPs, lutetium phthalocyanine, and nickel oxide nanoparticles), was employed to analyze the phenolic content in grape seed extracts. The system monitored weekly changes in the phenolic composition of the seeds from three red grape varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Prieto Picudo—during their ripening from veraison to being overripe. Using voltammetric techniques, the electrochemical responses were characterized by shifts in peak positions and intensity changes, reflecting the oxidation/reduction of phenols. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) demonstrated the ability of the array of sensors to discriminate phenolic changes across ripening stages, while Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression provided robust correlation models between the electrochemical responses and seed phenolic content, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.93 to 0.99. The developed methodology successfully tracked phenolic changes, offering a promising tool for monitoring grape seed maturation and assisting in determining the optimal harvest time.

Metal oxide nanoparticles (MONP/s) induce DNA damage, which is influenced by their physicochemical properties. In this study, the high-throughput CometChip and micronucleus (MicroFlow) assays were used to investigate DNA and chromosomal damage in mouse lung epithelial cells induced by nano and bulk sizes of zinc oxide, copper oxide, manganese oxide, nickel oxide, aluminum oxide, cerium oxide, titanium dioxide, and iron oxide. Ionic forms of MONPs were also included. The study evaluated the impact of solubility, surface coating, and particle size on response. Correlation analysis showed that solubility in the cell culture medium was positively associated with response in both assays, with the nano form showing the same or higher response than larger particles. A subtle reduction in DNA damage response was observed post-exposure to some surface-coated MONPs. The observed difference in genotoxicity highlighted the mechanistic differences in the MONP-induced response, possibly influenced by both particle stability and chemical composition. The results highlight that combinations of properties influence response to MONPs and that solubility alone, while playing an important role, is not enough to explain the observed toxicity. Objective(s): Multidrug-resistant Enterococcus faecium can grow in a variety of settings and cause infections that can be fatal, making it a serious threat. Partially purified and characterized bacteriocins with antimicrobial efficacy demonstrated antimicrobial activity against gram-negative bacteria. Methods: Zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnO-NPs)were synthesized by a biological method from suspensions of E. faecium bacteria isolated from the Gums of healthy people at different time points (24 and 48 hour), and temperatures ranging from (35-37)°C to pH (5 - 5.30). Results: The size of ZnO-NP particles has been determined. The biosynthesized ZnO-NPs' peak of absorption was visible in the UV-VIS spectrum at 267 nm. The mean dimension of the biosynthesized ZnO-NPs was determined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) to be within 259.2 nm. Three different peak shapes in the XRD spectra demonstrated the production of ZnO NPs. Analysis using X-ray (EDX) demonstrates the zinc content of the ZnO-NPs. SEM was utilized to evaluate dimensions and form. The vast majority of the particles were spherical and uniform in shape, based on SEM images. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined at concentrations ranging between 1000,500, 250,125,64 µg/ml. The minimum inhibitory concentration for ZnO-NPs prepared from E. faecium using the microtiter plate method was 250 µg/mL. The toxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles was tested on human lymphocytes. Conclusions: ZnO-NPs were synthesized successfully using an easy-to-use, lowcost, green, high-throughput, and environmentally friendly technology that showed remarkable antibacterial effectiveness against a variety of bacterial species. The biogenic synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was boosted by the use of a recently found organic acid produced from Citrus sinensis. Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were synthesized at 350 °C and 450 °C, and their physical and chemical properties were studied using a number of different characterisation techniques. Crystalline structure and phase were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of as-synthesized and annealed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. This finding demonstrates that the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles have a unique, cubic spinel structure with only one phase. With the use of well-established formulae, we were able to calculate the crystallite size and lattice parameter of the synthesized Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, and found that their size increased as a function of the annealing temperature, from 11 nm to 34 nm. The FTIR method was used to analyse the as-synthesized and annealed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles for functional groups, molecular structure, and chemical bonding. Metallic components at 465, 551 and 1628 cm−1 were found after analysing the three samples. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) was used to analyse the surface morphology and grain size fluctuations of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, while Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) was used to study the elemental composition. Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles' thermal characteristics change depending on the annealing temperature. The antibacterial efficacy of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, manufactured using green methods, was assessed against two different types of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram-negative). The distinct physicochemical and biological characteristics of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles have attracted considerable interest in various branches of dentistry as potential solutions to the problems associated with conventional dental treatments and to promote human health. Many scientists have been interested in nanoparticles for endodontic applications in the last several decades. Endodontic treatment is more likely to be successful when metal and metal oxide nanoparticles are used. Endodontic therapies often make use of nanoparticles made of metals and metal oxides. The effect of nano metals and metal oxide in endodontic treatments has not been published or is not widely available in the literature. Therefore, this paper aims to review recent studies on the development and application of some important metal and metal oxide nanoparticles such as silver and silver oxide, zinc oxide, zirconium oxide, magnesium oxide, titanium dioxide and other metal oxide nanoparticles in endodontic therapeutic procedures.

Abstract Background Cancer is a significant global health issue, resulting from uncontrolled cell division leading to abnormal cell or tissue growth. Traditional chemotherapeutic techniques have investigated a wide variety of pharmaceutically active molecules despite their poor bioavailability, quick renal clearance, inconsistent distribution, and unavoidable side effects. Green synthesis, unlike chemical methods, prioritizes eco-friendliness and cost-effectiveness. Using natural sources like plant extracts, it minimizes environmental impact, reduces costs, and aligns with sustainability goals. Operating under milder conditions, it consumes less energy compared to traditional approaches. Green synthesis is a highly promising and efficient method for producing nanoparticles due to its versatility and scalability. Main body Nanotechnology is making progress in cancer treatment because of nanoparticles' tiny size, large surface area, adaptability, and functionality, as well as their potential to induce apoptotic pathways and fast penetration or internalization into cancer cells. Biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles using plant or microbe extracts is attracting attention to replace toxic chemicals with phytochemicals that can act as reducing, capping, or stabilizing agents and improve metallic nanoparticles biocompatibility, antitumor, and antioxidant properties. This review focuses on biosynthesized metallic nanoparticles and their anticancer effects on breast, prostate, skin, cervical, colorectal, lung, and liver cancer. Conclusion Biosynthesis of nanoparticles for cancer therapy stands at the forefront of innovative and sustainable approaches. Despite challenges, ongoing research demonstrates the potential of biosynthesis to revolutionize cancer nanomedicine, emphasizing the need for continued exploration and collaboration in this rapidly advancing field. Overall, this review offers a comprehensive understanding of the most recent developments in biosynthesized metallic nanoparticles for the treatment of cancer as well as their potential future applications in medicine.

Abstract Periodontitis, one of the most prevalent dental diseases, causes the loss of bone and gum tissue that hold teeth in place. Several bacteria, commonly present in clinically healthy oral cavities, may induce and perpetuate periodontitis when their concentration rises in the gingival sulcus. Antibacterial effect against various Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including pathogenic and drug-resistant ones, has been shown for several distinct transient metal and metal oxide NPs. Therefore, NPs may be used in biomedicine to treat periodontal problems and in nanotechnology to inhibit the development of microorganisms. Instead of using harmful chemicals or energy-intensive machinery, biosynthesis of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) has been suggested. To produce metal and metal oxide NPs, the ideal technique is “Green” synthesis because of its low toxicity and safety for human health and the environment. Gold NPs (AuNPs) appear to be less toxic to mammalian cells than other nanometals because their antibacterial activity is not dependent on reactive oxygen species (ROS). AgNPs also possess chemical stability, catalytic activity, and superior electrical and thermal conductivity, to name a few of their other advantageous characteristics. It was observed that zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs and copper (Cu) NPs exhibited discernible inhibitory effects against gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains, respectively. ZnO NPs demonstrated bactericidal activity against the microorganisms responsible for periodontitis. Medications containing magnetic NPs are highly effective against multidrug-resistant bacterial and fungal infections. The titanium dioxide (TiO2) NPs are implicated in elevating salivary peroxidase activity in individuals diagnosed with chronic periodontitis. Furthermore, specific metallic NPs have the potential to enhance the antimicrobial efficacy of periodontitis treatments when combined. Therefore, these NPs, as well as their oxide NPs, are only some of the metals and metal oxides that have been synthesized in environmentally friendly ways and shown to have therapeutic benefits against periodontitis. While urbanisation has numerous advantages, it causes greater risks to the environment and human health because of the release of heavy metals, various organic and inorganic contaminants, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals. Though several actions are being taken daily to lessen the release of harmful substances, there is still an immediate need to find a suitable solution to protect the environment. Nanotechnology has multifaceted applications, and there is extensive evidence of the emerging applications of nanoremediation, especially for soil and water pollution. Iron nanoparticles showed outstanding removal efficiency towards hexavalent chromium (100 %). Likewise, several publications on soil and water remediation employ nanomaterials based on metals, carbon, and polymers. However, most of the previously conducted works present the key nanoremediation results without depicting each nanomaterial's advantages and disadvantages. Hence, this work critically reviews the pros and cons of each nanomaterial with a special focus towards novel approaches using green synthesised nanomaterials that are completely eco-friendly and hence preferred for the removal of various contaminants without producing harmful effects. However, some bottlenecks exist in fully implementing the green nanoparticles for Nanoremediation. Thus, the review discusses the limitations of green nanomaterials that need to be addressed soon to maintain environmental sustainability. Finally, this review presents opportunities for future work in assessing the eco-safety of each nanomaterial that boosts the further utilisation of nanotechnology in the sustainable remediation of contaminated soil and water.

Currently, the alteration of external factors during crude oil extraction easily disrupts the thermodynamic equilibrium of asphaltene, resulting in the continuous flocculation and deposition of asphaltene molecules in crude oil. This accumulation within the pores of reservoir rocks obstructs the pore throat, hindering the efficient extraction of oil and gas, and consequently, affecting the recovery of oil and gas resources. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the principles of asphaltene deposition inhibition and the synthesis of asphaltene inhibitors. In recent years, the development of nanotechnology has garnered significant attention due to its unique surface and volume effects. Nanoparticles possess a large specific surface area, high adsorption capacity, and excellent suspension and catalytic abilities, exhibiting unparalleled advantages compared with traditional organic asphaltene inhibitors, such as sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate and salicylic acid. At present, there are three primary types of nanoparticle inhibitors: metal oxide nanoparticles, organic nanoparticles, and inorganic nonmetal nanoparticles. This paper reviews the recent advancements and application challenges of nanoparticle asphaltene deposition inhibition technology based on the mechanism of asphaltene deposition and nano-inhibitors. Sunset Yellow FCF (SY FCF) is one of the widely used synthetic azo dyes in the food industry whose content has to be controlled for safety reasons. Electrochemical sensors are a promising tool for this type of task. A voltammetric sensor based on a combination of tin and cerium dioxide nanoparticles (SnO2–CeO2 NPs) with surfactants has been developed for SY FCF determination. The synergetic effect of both types of NPs has been confirmed. Surfactants of various natures (sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), Brij® 35, and hexadecylpyridinium bromide (HDPB)) have been tested as dispersive media. The best effects, i.e., the highest oxidation currents of SY FCF, have been observed in the case of HDPB. The sensor demonstrates a 4.5-fold-higher electroactive surface area and a 38-fold-higher electron transfer rate compared to the bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The electrooxidation of SY FCF is an irreversible, two-electron, diffusion-driven process involving proton transfer. In differential pulse mode in Britton–Robinson buffer (BRB) pH 2.0, the sensor gives a linear response to SY FCF from 0.010 to 1.0 μM and from 1.0 to 100 μM with an 8.0 nM detection limit. The absence of an interferent effect from other typical food components and colorants has been shown. The sensor has been tested on soft drinks and validated with the standard chromatographic method. [Display omitted] While urbanisation has numerous advantages, it causes greater risks to the environment and human health because of the release of heavy metals, various organic and inorganic contaminants, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals. Though several actions are being taken daily to lessen the release of harmful substances, there is still an immediate need to find a suitable solution to protect the environment. Nanotechnology has multifaceted applications, and there is extensive evidence of the emerging applications of nanoremediation, especially for soil and water pollution. Iron nanoparticles showed outstanding removal efficiency towards hexavalent chromium (100 %). Likewise, several publications on soil and water remediation employ nanomaterials based on metals, carbon, and polymers. However, most of the previously conducted works present the key nanoremediation results without depicting each nanomaterial's advantages and disadvantages. Hence, this work critically reviews the pros and cons of each nanomaterial with a special focus towards novel approaches using green synthesised nanomaterials that are completely eco-friendly and hence preferred for the removal of various contaminants without producing harmful effects. However, some bottlenecks exist in fully implementing the green nanoparticles for Nanoremediation. Thus, the review discusses the limitations of green nanomaterials that need to be addressed soon to maintain environmental sustainability. Finally, this review presents opportunities for future work in assessing the eco-safety of each nanomaterial that boosts the further utilisation of nanotechnology in the sustainable remediation of contaminated soil and water. The widespread application of nanoparticles (NPs) in agriculture has not only enhanced the efficiency of agrochemical use but also introduced environmental pollution, potentially impacting human health through absorption and accumulation in edible plants. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the toxic effects and ecological risks of Cu2O nanoparticles (nCu2O) in the life cycle of soybean, and to provide a theoretical basis for the safe application of NPs in agriculture. Soybeans were grown in natural soil modified with nCu2O, bulk cuprous oxide (bCu2O) and copper sulfate (CuSO4) at concentrations of 0, 50, 200, and 800 mg/kg. Samples and grains from treated soybeans were collected at the flowering, podding, and seed-filling stages for analysis. The results indicated that treatments with nCu2O, bCu2O, and Cu2+ reduced the chlorophyll content in soybean leaves, thereby affecting photosynthesis. Significant reductions were observed in the net photosynthetic rate (Pn), the transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs), the quantum yield of photosystem II (Y(II)), photochemical quenching (qP), and the electron transport rate (ETR) at high concentrations. However, the toxicity of nCu2O to photosynthesis recovers as the plant grows. Almost all treatments increased the levels of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT) and reduced oxidative stress. In the nCu2O and bCu2O treatments, grain protein content was significantly reduced, while fat and water content increased. Phosphorus (P) content decreased, whereas sulfur (S), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) contents increased. The accumulation of copper in plants followed the order nCu2O > bCu2O > Cu2+, with the bCu2O treatment being slightly more toxic than the nCu2O treatment, and both being more toxic than the Cu2+ treatment. The above data indicated that nCu2O had a dose-dependent effect, which significantly inhibited soybean growth and changed grain quality at high concentrations.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is growing into a major public health crisis worldwide. The reducing alternatives to conventional agents starve for novel antimicrobial agents. Due to their unique magnetic properties and excellent biocompatibility, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are the most preferable nanomaterials in biomedicine, including antibacterial therapy, primarily through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. IONP characteristics, including their size, shape, surface charge, and superparamagnetism, influence their biodistribution and antibacterial activity. External magnetic fields, foreign metal doping, and surface, size, and shape modification improve the antibacterial effect of IONPs. Despite a few disadvantages, IONPs are expected to be promising antibacterial agents of a new generation.

Simultaneously enhancing device performance and longevity, as well as balancing the requirements on cost, scalability, and simplification of processing, is the goal of interface engineering of organic solar cells (OSCs). In our work, we strategically introduce antimony (Sb3+) cations into an efficient and generic n-type SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) host during the scalable flame spray pyrolysis synthesis. Accordingly, a significant switch of conduction property from an n-type character to a p-type character is observed, with a corresponding shift in the work function (WF) from 4.01 ± 0.02 eV for pristine SnO2 NPs to 5.28 ± 0.02 eV for SnO2 NPs with 20 mol. % Sb content (ATO). Both pristine SnO2 and ATO NPs with fine-tuned optoelectronic properties exhibit remarkable charge carrier extraction properties, excellent UV resistance and photo-stability being compatible with various state-of-the-art OSCs systems. The reliable and scalable pristine SnO2 and ATO NPs processed by doctor-blading in air demand no complex post-treatment. Our work offers a simple but unique approach to accelerate the development of advanced interfacial materials, which could circumvent the major existing interfacial problems in solution-processed OSCs.

Wound dressing from a polymeric mixture of cellulose acetate (CA) and hyaluronic acid (HA) embedded with copper oxide (CuO) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles as a scaffold was successfully fabricated. Several methods, including X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD), contact angle, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were employed to characterize the prepared nanocomposite samples. The data obtained from XRD showed that pure HA with diffraction peaks at 2θ = 20.8°, 46.7°, and 63.2° that assigned to the semi-crystalline nature of HA. At the same time, the XRD pattern of the CuO@CA nanocomposites revealed the presence of a sharp crystalline peak at 2θ = 36°, representing the presence of the CuO nanomaterial. In addition, the typical cubic MgO peaks in the MgO@CA showed the pattern at 2θ = 43.1° and 62.5°. Furthermore, the diffraction pattern of CuO/MgO@HA/CA film shows strong crystallinity since its diffraction peaks are stated at 2θ = 8.8°, 13.01°, 29.6°, and 53.5° which represents CuO nanoparticles and the polycrystalline cubic structure of MgO nanoparticles exhibit several peaks at 2θ = 29.4°, 31°, 38.7°, 42.2°, and 63°. FTIR spectra of CuO/MgO@HA/CA displayed bands at 657 cm−1 and 843 cm−1 which correspond to the broadening vibration mode for the Mg-O-Mg and the existence of Mg-O vibrations, while the single band for CuO was shown at 1556 cm−1. SEM analysis revealed that the nanoparticles of copper oxide and magnesium oxide are evenly distributed throughout the polymer mass with the clean surface of the polymer with the appearance of nanoparticles with rough size and distribution in regions of varied densities by adding binary metal oxide nanoparticles (CuO/MgO@HA/CA). Furthermore, swelling rate percent, contact angle, and degradation behavior studies showed that the swelling rate percent of the polymer mixture film decreased when adding nanometal oxide. Contact angle was increased by incorporating the metal oxide nanoparticles in the polymeric mixture structure. Moreover, the degradation behavior of prepared samples showed lower rates of deterioration and the sample containing a mixture of metal oxide nanoparticles (CuO/MgO@HA/CA) exhibits a lower weight loss value when compared to HA, HA/CA, and CA samples. Human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells were used in in-vitro cytotoxicity tests. CuO/MgO@HA/CA sample treatment on cells suggests a non-cytotoxic impact, in contrast to the MTT test, which yields cell viability values of between 70% and 80% (72 h).

In recent years, interest in nanotechnology has increased exponentially due to enhanced progress and technological innovation. In tissue engineering, the development of metallic nanoparticles has been amplified, especially due to their antibacterial properties. Another important characteristic of metal NPs is that they enable high control over the features of the developed scaffolds (optimizing their mechanical strength and offering the controlled release of bioactive agents). Currently, the main concern related to the method of synthesis of metal oxide NPs is the environmental impact. The physical and chemical synthesis uses toxic agents that could generate hazards or exert carcinogenicity/environmental toxicity. Therefore, a greener, cleaner, and more reliable approach is needed. Green synthetic has come as a solution to counter the aforementioned limitations. Nowadays, green synthesis is preferred because it leads to the prevention/minimization of waste, the reduction of derivatives/pollution, and the use of non-toxic (safer) solvents. This method not only uses biomass sources as reducing agents for metal salts. The biomolecules also cover the synthesized NPs or act as in situ capping and reducing agents. Further, their involvement in the formation process reduces toxicity, prevents nanoparticle agglomeration, and improves the antimicrobial activity of the nanomaterial, leading to a possible synergistic effect. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the green synthesis of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, from the synthesis routes, selected solvents, and parameters to their latest application in the biomedical field. Infectious diseases have risen dramatically as a result of the resistance of many common antibiotics. Nanotechnology provides a new avenue of investigation for the development of antimicrobial agents that effectively combat infection. The combined effects of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) are known to have intense antibacterial activities. However, a comprehensive analysis of some NPs regarding these activities is still unavailable. This study uses the aqueous chemical growth method to synthesize Co3O4, CuO, NiO and ZnO NPs. The prepared materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The antibacterial activities of NPs were tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria using the microdilution method, such as the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method. The best MIC value among all the metal oxide NPs was 0.63 against Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC12228 through ZnO NPs. The other metal oxide NPs also showed satisfactory MIC values against different test bacteria. In addition, the biofilm inhibition and antiquorum sensing activities of NPs were also examined. The present study presents a novel approach for the relative analysis of metal-based NPs in antimicrobial studies, demonstrating their potential for bacteria removal from water and wastewater. Abstract Background The biogenic synthesis of metallic nanoparticles is a green alternative that reduces the toxicity of this nanomaterials and may enable a synergy between the metallic core and the biomolecules employed in the process enhancing biological activity. The aim of this study was to synthesize biogenic titanium nanoparticles using the filtrate of the fungus Trichoderma harzianum as a stabilizing agent, to obtain a potential biological activity against phytopathogens and mainly stimulate the growth of T. harzianum, enhancing its efficacy for biological control. Results The synthesis was successful and reproductive structures remained in the suspension, showing faster and larger mycelial growth compared to commercial T. harzianum and filtrate. The nanoparticles with residual T. harzianum growth showed inhibitory potential against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum mycelial growth and the formation of new resistant structures. A great chitinolytic activity of the nanoparticles was observed in comparison with T. harzianum. In regard to toxicity evaluation, an absence of cytotoxicity and a protective effect of the nanoparticles was observed through MTT and Trypan blue assay. No genotoxicity was observed on V79-4 and 3T3 cell lines while HaCat showed higher sensitivity. Microorganisms of agricultural importance were not affected by the exposure to the nanoparticles, however a decrease in the number of nitrogen cycling bacteria was observed. In regard to phytotoxicity, the nanoparticles did not cause morphological and biochemical changes on soybean plants. Conclusion The production of biogenic nanoparticles was an essential factor in stimulating or maintaining structures that are important for biological control, showing that this may be an essential strategy to stimulate the growth of biocontrol organisms to promote more sustainable agriculture. Metal oxide nanoparticles (MONP/s) induce DNA damage, which is influenced by their physicochemical properties. In this study, the high-throughput CometChip and micronucleus (MicroFlow) assays were used to investigate DNA and chromosomal damage in mouse lung epithelial cells induced by nano and bulk sizes of zinc oxide, copper oxide, manganese oxide, nickel oxide, aluminum oxide, cerium oxide, titanium dioxide, and iron oxide. Ionic forms of MONPs were also included. The study evaluated the impact of solubility, surface coating, and particle size on response. Correlation analysis showed that solubility in the cell culture medium was positively associated with response in both assays, with the nano form showing the same or higher response than larger particles. A subtle reduction in DNA damage response was observed post-exposure to some surface-coated MONPs. The observed difference in genotoxicity highlighted the mechanistic differences in the MONP-induced response, possibly influenced by both particle stability and chemical composition. The results highlight that combinations of properties influence response to MONPs and that solubility alone, while playing an important role, is not enough to explain the observed toxicity. The results have implications on the potential application of read-across strategies in support of human health risk assessment of MONPs.

A lot of emphasis has been paid to the greener method of synthesizing nanomaterials since it is a viable, dependable, cost-effective, wealthy, and eco-friendly paradigm. Perhaps using a greener method of synthesis is seen as a smart tool to reduce the hazardous effects added to the traditional methods of synthesis suited for nanomaterials that are often preferred in industry and lab. This book describes the fundamental procedures on the sophisticated eco-friendly and green synthesis patterns and techniques, with special attention paid to metal and metal-based oxides. Wastewater from the textile sector, which contains chemicals like dye and other pollutants, is a substantial source. The environment suffers severe damage when hundreds of tons of dye used in textile processing and finishing are released into natural streams and aquatic bodies. Numerous studies have been conducted utilizing low-cost technologies to create absorbents that can remove colours from water bodies in response to environmental concerns. Different methods have been used to remove dyes, including adsorption, enzymatic and photocatalytic degradation, etc. The most current and valuable concept for treating wastewater, utilizing specially produced nanomaterials, is photocatalysis, a straightforward and environmentally friendly method. This review article covers the primary goal of biological methods, green nanoparticle production, numerous green synthesis techniques, the benefits of greener chemistry, and its use in photocatalysis for the degradation of industrial dyes. Overall, this review explores the way for advancements in photocatalysis research using metal oxides synthesized by green methods for the better environmental monitoring and zero energy waste.

The effective spatial distribution and arrangement of electrochemically active and conductive components within metal oxide nanoparticle (MO NP)‐based electrodes significantly impact their energy storage performance. Unfortunately, conventional electrode preparation processes have much difficulty addressing this issue. Herein, this work demonstrates that a unique nanoblending assembly based on favorable and direct interfacial interactions between high‐energy MO NPs and interface‐modified carbon nanoclusters (CNs) notably enhances the capacities and charge transfer kinetics of binder‐free electrodes in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). For this study, carboxylic acid (COOH)‐functionalized carbon nanoclusters (CCNs) are consecutively assembled with bulky ligand‐stabilized MO NPs through ligand‐exchange‐induced multidentate binding between the COOH groups of CCNs and the surface of NPs. This nanoblending assembly homogeneously distributes conductive CCNs within densely packed MO NP arrays without insulating organics (i.e., polymeric binders and/or ligands) and prevents the aggregation/segregation of electrode components, thus markedly reducing contact resistance between neighboring NPs. Furthermore, when these CCN‐mediated MO NP electrodes are formed on highly porous fibril‐type current collectors (FCCs) for LIB electrodes, they deliver outstanding areal performance, which can be further improved through simple multistacking. The findings provide a basis for better understanding the relationship between interfacial interaction/structures and charge transfer processes and for developing high‐performance energy storage electrodes. The study of molecular recognition patterns is crucial for understanding the interactions between inorganic (nano)particles and biomolecules. In this review we focus on hydroxyls (OH) exposed at the surface of oxide particles (OxPs) which can play a key role in molecular initiating events leading to OxPs toxicity. We discuss here the main analytical methods available to characterize surface OH from a quantitative and qualitative point of view, covering thermogravimetry, titration, ζ potential measurements, and spectroscopic approaches (NMR, XPS). The importance of modelling techniques (MD, DFT) for an atomistic description of the interactions between membranes/proteins and OxPs surfaces is also discussed. From this background, we distilled a new approach methodology (NAM) based on the combination of IR spectroscopy and bioanalytical assays to investigate the molecular interactions of OxPs with biomolecules and membranes. This NAM has been already successfully applied to SiO2 particles to identify the OH patterns responsible for the OxPs' toxicity and can be conceivably extended to other surface-hydroxylated oxides. In the present work, polycarbazole (PCz)/magnesium cobalt oxide (MgCo2O4)/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) based ternary nanocomposite was prepared through in-situ polymerization, and utilized it as an active electrodes for electrochemical energy storage supercapacitor applications. The electrochemical behaviour of PCz and its nanocomposites were investigated by measuring specific capacitance using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD) analysis. The PCz/MgCo2O4/RGO hybrids exhibited higher capacitance (548.54 F/g) than that of PCz (117.65 F/g) and PCz/MgCo2O4 (482.92 F/g) at the scan rate of 50 mV/s, as determined by CV method. The enhanced supercapacitance indicates high power and energy storage capabilities of the ternary metal oxide-graphene based polycarbazole nanocomposites. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed low solution resistance of PCz/MgCo2O4/RGO. Thermogravimetric analysis affirmed the increased thermal stability of PCz/MgCo2O4/RGO composite compared to that of pure polycarbazole and PCz/MgCo2O4 nanocomposite. The scanning electron micrographs of nanocomposite confirmed the successful incorporation of nanofillers into the PCz matrix. On the basis of the research findings, PCz/MgCo2O4/RGO can be expected to be a promising electrode active material for high performance energy storage supercapacitors.

In this study, binary nickel oxide silver oxide nanoparticles (NiO) x (Ag 2 O) 1 − x (NPs) were synthesised for the first time using the thermal treatment route at higher and lower precursor values. Two precursors and 5 g of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were employed to obtain the (NiO) x (Ag 2 O) 1 − x NPs at 700 °C. The obtained NiO NPs documented cubic and hexagonal phases when assessed with X-ray diffraction (XRD) at (x = 0.4 and 0.6) and (x = 0.2 and 0.8), respectively. The cubic phase was confirmed for Ag 2 O NPs in all prepared samples. The smallest crystallite and particle sizes were found at x = 0.8. The particle size ranged from 23.0 to 45.0 nm, which was evaluated with a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Two shapes, NiO doped with porous Ag 2 O nanosheets, were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The purity of the products was evaluated via energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. The synthesised NPs were composed of nickel (Ni), silver (Ag), and oxygen (O). Moreover, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis performed during this study revealed the chemical states of the Ni, Ag, and O present, which confirmed the purity of the NPs. The ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis) assessment conducted also demonstrated that the energy band gaps for nickel oxide (NiO) and silver oxide (Ag 2 O) increased with rising x values. The photoluminescence (PL) analysis performed in this study also verified the existence of two emission peaks attributable to NiO and Ag 2 O, indicating that the NPs possess good photocatalytic activity. The electrochemical sensing of biomarkers has attracted more and more attention due to the advantages of electrochemical biosensors, including their ease of use, excellent accuracy, and small analyte volumes. Thus, the electrochemical sensing of biomarkers has a potential application in early disease diagnosis diagnosis. Dopamine neurotransmitters have a vital role in the transmission of nerve impulses. Here, the fabrication of a polypyrrole/molybdenum dioxide nanoparticle (MoO3 NP)-modified ITO electrode based on a hydrothermal technique followed by electrochemical polymerization is reported. Several techniques were used to investigate the developed electrode's structure, morphology, and physical characteristics, including SEM, FTIR, EDX, N2 adsorption, and Raman spectroscopy. The results imply the formation of tiny MoO3 NPs with an average diameter of 29.01 nm. The developed electrode was used to determine low concentrations of dopamine neurotransmitters based on cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry techniques. Furthermore, the developed electrode was used for monitoring dopamine in a human serum sample. The LOD for detecting dopamine by using MoO3 NPs/ITO electrodes based on the SWV technique was around 2.2 nmol L−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we report on novel polyimide (PI) nanocomposites filled with binary mixtures of metal oxide (either TiO2 or ZrO2) nanoparticles and nanocarbon (either carbon nanofibers (CNFs) or functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTfs)). The structure and morphology of the materials obtained were comprehensively studied. An exhaustive investigation of their thermal and mechanical properties was performed. We revealed a synergistic effect of the nanoconstituents with regard to a number of functional characteristics of the PIs compared with single-filler nanocomposites, including thermal stability, stiffness (below and above glass transition temperature), yield point, and temperature of flowing. Moreover, the possibility of manipulating the properties of the materials by choosing a proper combination of the nanofillers was demonstrated. The results obtained can become a platform in the design of PI-based engineering materials with tailored characteristics capable of operating in extreme conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is a matter of common knowledge in the literature that engineered metal oxide nanoparticles have properties that are efficient for the design of innovative food/beverage packages. Although nanopackages have many benefits, there are circumstances when these materials are able to release nanoparticles into the food/beverage matrix. Once dispersed into food, engineered metal oxide nanoparticles travel through the gastrointestinal tract and subsequently enter human cells, where they display various behaviors influencing human health or wellbeing. This review article provides an insight into the antimicrobial mechanisms of metal oxide nanoparticles as essential for their benefits in food/beverage packaging and provides a discussion on the oral route of these nanoparticles from nanopackages to the human body. This contribution also highlights the potential toxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles for human health. Pol(vinyl chloride) or PVC has functional properties that enable its use in many industrial applications. It suffers from aging, however, in harsh conditions (e.g., elevated temperature or high humidity levels) if oxygen is present. One way to enhance the photostability of PVC is to blend it with additives. Thus, thin films were made by mixing PVC with clotrimazole, and five metal oxide (titanium, copper, cobalt, chromium, and nickel oxides) additives. The metal oxides and clotrimazole were added at concentrations of 0.1 and 0.5% by weight, respectively. The effect of the metal oxide nanoparticles accompanied by clotrimazole on the photodegradation of PVC was then assessed. The results indicated that the additives have a stabilizing effect and protect PVC against photodegradation significantly. The formation of polymeric fragments of small molecular weight containing carbon-carbon double bonds and carbonyl groups was lower in the blends containing metal oxide nanoparticles and clotrimazole than in unblended PVC. Similarly, the decrease in weight was much less for the films blended with additives. Additionally, surface analysis of the irradiated polymeric films showed significantly lower damage in the materials containing additives. The most effective additive in the stabilization of PVC was nickel oxide nanoparticles. The metal oxides are highly alkaline and act as scavengers for the hydrogen chloride produced during the photodegradation of PVC. They additionally act as peroxide decomposers. In contrast, clotrimazole can absorb harmful radiation and act as an ultraviolet absorber due to its heteroatom and aromatic content. Thus, the use of a combination of metal oxide nanoparticles and clotrimazole led to significant improvement in the resistance of PVC toward photodegradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the classical spark system, the fact that the distance between the electrodes is controlled separately with two separate micrometers can prevent the nanoparticles from properly coating the substrate surface. Therefore, in the present work, the classical system has been modified to eliminate this drawback. No study has been found in the literature with the simultaneous control of the distance between the electrodes. A microcontroller and electromechanical system were used in this modified spark discharge system. A shaft that has right and left teeth on it is driven by a microcontroller and moved by a stepper motor, providing simultaneous and equal control of the distance between the electrodes. In addition, with a second stepper motor, the circular movement of the substrate allowed the nanoparticles to accumulate around a center. The modified spark discharge system tested for undoped ZnO and Al-doped ZnO nanoparticles was synthesized with the Zn and Al metal electrode pairs such as Zn-Zn, Zn-Al, and Al-Al. The properties of thin films composed of nanoparticles were further studied by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and optical transmittance measurement. Based on the scanning electron microscopy analysis, it was observed that nanoparticles with smaller radii were obtained in a circular area in the center of the substrate, and these nanoparticles covered the substrate surface more smoothly and homogeneously. The average nanoparticle diameters for Zn-Zn electrodes were calculated as 94 nm and 42 nm for the classical spark discharge system and the modified spark discharge system, respectively. When Al-Zn electrodes were used, it was observed that the average size of the nanoparticles was 57 nm and that they were distributed very smoothly and homogeneously on the substrate surface. Abstract The effective spatial distribution and arrangement of electrochemically active and conductive components within metal oxide nanoparticle (MO NP)‐based electrodes significantly impact their energy storage performance. Unfortunately, conventional electrode preparation processes have much difficulty addressing this issue. Herein, this work demonstrates that a unique nanoblending assembly based on favorable and direct interfacial interactions between high‐energy MO NPs and interface‐modified carbon nanoclusters (CNs) notably enhances the capacities and charge transfer kinetics of binder‐free electrodes in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). For this study, carboxylic acid (COOH)‐functionalized carbon nanoclusters (CCNs) are consecutively assembled with bulky ligand‐stabilized MO NPs through ligand‐exchange‐induced multidentate binding between the COOH groups of CCNs and the surface of NPs. This nanoblending assembly homogeneously distributes conductive CCNs within densely packed MO NP arrays without insulating organics (i.e., polymeric binders and/or ligands) and prevents the aggregation/segregation of electrode components, thus markedly reducing contact resistance between neighboring NPs. Furthermore, when these CCN‐mediated MO NP electrodes are formed on highly porous fibril‐type current collectors (FCCs) for LIB electrodes, they deliver outstanding areal performance, which can be further improved through simple multistacking. The findings provide a basis for better understanding the relationship between interfacial interaction/structures and charge transfer processes and for developing high‐performance energy storage electrodes.

Currently, the alteration of external factors during crude oil extraction easily disrupts the thermodynamic equilibrium of asphaltene, resulting in the continuous flocculation and deposition of asphaltene molecules in crude oil. This accumulation within the pores of reservoir rocks obstructs the pore throat, hindering the efficient extraction of oil and gas, and consequently, affecting the recovery of oil and gas resources. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the principles of asphaltene deposition inhibition and the synthesis of asphaltene inhibitors. In recent years, the development of nanotechnology has garnered significant attention due to its unique surface and volume effects. Nanoparticles possess a large specific surface area, high adsorption capacity, and excellent suspension and catalytic abilities, exhibiting unparalleled advantages compared with traditional organic asphaltene inhibitors, such as sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate and salicylic acid. At present, there are three primary types of nanoparticle inhibitors: metal oxide nanoparticles, organic nanoparticles, and inorganic nonmetal nanoparticles. This paper reviews the recent advancements and application challenges of nanoparticle asphaltene deposition inhibition technology based on the mechanism of asphaltene deposition and nano-inhibitors. The aim was to provide insights for ongoing research in this field and to identify potential future research directions.

In the present study, oxide nanoparticles of copper, cobalt, iron and zinc metals have been synthesized using a chemical co-precipitation approach. This gives a large scale production of metal oxide nanoparticles. The structural properties of the synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD result reveals the crystalline nature of the metal oxide nanoparticles. Additional, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also performed to study the morphology of the selected four metal oxide nanoparticles. SEM micrograph showed the spherical morphology of as prepared CuO, CO2O3, Fe2O3 and ZnO nanoparticles also they are interspersed with each other.

Sunset Yellow FCF (SY FCF) is one of the widely used synthetic azo dyes in the food industry whose content has to be controlled for safety reasons. Electrochemical sensors are a promising tool for this type of task. A voltammetric sensor based on a combination of tin and cerium dioxide nanoparticles (SnO2–CeO2 NPs) with surfactants has been developed for SY FCF determination. The synergetic effect of both types of NPs has been confirmed. Surfactants of various natures (sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), Brij® 35, and hexadecylpyridinium bromide (HDPB)) have been tested as dispersive media. The best effects, i.e., the highest oxidation currents of SY FCF, have been observed in the case of HDPB. The sensor demonstrates a 4.5-fold-higher electroactive surface area and a 38-fold-higher electron transfer rate compared to the bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The electrooxidation of SY FCF is an irreversible, two-electron, diffusion-driven process involving proton transfer. In differential pulse mode in Britton–Robinson buffer (BRB) pH 2.0, the sensor gives a linear response to SY FCF from 0.010 to 1.0 μM and from 1.0 to 100 μM with an 8.0 nM detection limit. The absence of an interferent effect from other typical food components and colorants has been shown. The sensor has been tested on soft drinks and validated with the standard chromatographic method.

The widespread use of metal oxide nanoparticles (MOx NPs) poses a risk of exposure that may lead to adverse health effects on humans. Even though a number of toxicological methodologies are available for assessing nanotoxicity, the effect of MOx NPs on cell metabolism in vitro and in vivo remains largely unknown, especially under the exposure to low-dose or supposedly low-toxicity MOx NPs. In this study, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based metabolomics was used to reveal significantly altered metabolites and metabolic pathways in human bronchial epithelial cells exposed to four different types of MOx NPs (ZnO, SiO2, TiO2, and CeO2) at both high (25 μg/mL) and low (12.5 μg/mL) doses. We demonstrated that high-dose ZnO NPs caused severe cytotoxicity with altered metabolism of amino acids, nucleotides, nucleosides, tricarboxylic acid cycle, lipids, inflammation/redox, and fatty acid oxidation, as well as the elevation of toxic and DNA damage related metabolites. Fewer metabolomic alterations were induced by low-dose ZnO NPs. However, most metabolites significantly altered by high-dose ZnO NPs were also slightly changed by low-dose ZnO NPs. On the other hand, the cells exposed to SiO2, TiO2, and CeO2 NPs at either high or low dose displayed low cytotoxicity with similar metabolomic alterations, although each type of NPs induced distinct changes of certain metabolites. These three NPs significantly affected the metabolic pathways of sphingosine-1-phosphate, fatty acid oxidation, folate cycle, inflammation/redox, and lipid metabolism. In addition, dose-dependent effects were observed for a number of metabolites significantly altered by respective MOx NPs. Representative metabolites of the significantly altered metabolic pathways were successfully validated in vitro using enzymatic assays. More importantly, these representative metabolites were further validated in a mouse model after lung exposure to respective NPs, indicating that in vitro metabolomic findings may be used to effectively predict the toxicological effects in vivo. Despite functional assay results demonstrating that the changes in cellular functions were largely reflected by the metabolomic alterations, LC-MS-based metabolomics was sensitive enough to detect the subtle metabolomic changes when functional cellular assays showed no significant difference. Collectively, our studies have unveiled potential metabolic mechanisms of MOx NP-induced nanotoxicity in lung epithelial cells and demonstrated the sensitivity and feasibility of using metabolomic signatures to understand and predict nanotoxicity in vivo.

Nanocomposite films based on macrocyclic compounds (zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl) 21H,23H-porphyrin (TPyP)) and metal oxide nanoparticles (ZnO or CuO) were deposited by matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE). 1,4-dioxane was used as a solvent in the preparation of MAPLE targets that favor the deposition of films with a low roughness, which is a key feature for their integration in structures for optoelectronic applications. The influence of the addition of ZnO nanoparticles (~20 nm in size) or CuO nanoparticles (~5 nm in size) in the ZnPc:TPyP mixture and the impact of the added metal oxide amount on the properties of the obtained composite films were evaluated in comparison to a reference layer based only on an organic blend. Thus, in the case of nanocomposite films, the vibrational fingerprints of both organic compounds were identified in the infrared spectra, their specific strong absorption bands were observed in the UV–Vis spectra, and a quenching of the TPyP emission band was visible in the photoluminescence spectra. The morphological analysis evidenced agglomerated particles on the composite film surface, but their presence has no significant impact on the roughness of the MAPLE deposited layers. The current density–voltage (J-V) characteristics of the structures based on the nanocomposite films deposited by MAPLE revealed the critical role played by the layer composition and component ratio, an improvement in the electrical parameters values being achieved only for the films with a certain type and optimum amount of metal oxide nanoparticles.
