The oceanic surface pressure of CO2 (pCO2) is an essential parameter for understanding the global and regional carbon cycle and the oceanic carbon uptake capacity. We constructed a three-dimensional physical-biogeochemical model with a high resolution of 1/30° for the South China Sea (SCS) to compensate for the limited temporal coverage and limited spatial resolution of the observations and numerical models. The model simulated oceanic surface pCO2 from 1992 to 2021, and the empirical orthogonal function analysis (EOF) of the model results is conducted for a better understanding of the seasonal and interannual variations of oceanic surface pCO2 in this region. The model results showed that the SCS serves as an atmospheric CO2 source from March to October and a sink from November to February, with a domain-averaged climatological oceanic surface pCO2 value that varies between 357 and 408 μatm, and the temporal variation was positively correlated with the variation of sea surface temperature (SST). The majority of the SCS showed a long-term increasing trend for oceanic surface pCO2 with a value of (1.19±0.60) μatm/a, which is in response to the continuously rising atmospheric CO2 concentration. The first EOF mode is positively correlated with the Niño 3 index with a correlation coefficient of 0.51 when the Niño 3 leads 5 months, and the second EOF mode is correlated with the PDO index when the PDO leads 7 months, which suggests an influence of climate variability on the carbonate system. Moreover, it was found that the long-term trend rate of oceanic surface pCO2 was mainly controlled by total CO2 (TCO2) through the decomposition of influence factors, and SST variation took a dominant role in seasonal variations of pCO2. With rapid global warming and continuous release of CO2, the carbonate system in the SCS may change leading to calcite and aragonite saturation.

Abstract Background Tracheal extubation is commonly performed in the supine position. However, in patients undergoing abdominal surgery, the supine position increases abdominal wall tension, especially during coughing and deep breathing, which may aggravate pain and lead to abdominal wound dehiscence. The semi-Fowler’s position may reduce abdominal wall tension, but its safety and comfort in tracheal extubation have not been reported. We aimed to evaluate the safety and comfort of different extubation positions in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Methods We enrolled 141 patients with an American Society of Anesthesiologists grade of I-III who underwent abdominal surgery. All patients were anesthetized with propofol, fentanyl, cisatracurium, and sevoflurane. After surgery, all patients were transferred to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Patients were then randomly put into the semi-Fowler’s (n = 70) or supine (n = 71) position while 100% oxygen was administered. The endotracheal tube was removed after the patients opened their eyes and regained consciousness. Vital signs, coughing, and pain and comfort scores before and/or after extubation were recorded until the patients left the PACU. Results In comparison with the supine position, the semi-Fowler’s position significantly decreased the wound pain scores at all intervals after extubation (3.51 ± 2.50 vs. 4.58 ± 2.26, 2.23 ± 1.68 vs. 3.11 ± 2.00, 1.81 ± 1.32 vs. 2.59 ± 1.88, P = 0.009, 0.005 and 0.005, respectively), reduced severe coughing (8[11.43%] vs. 21[29.58%], P = 0.008) and bucking after extubation (3[4.29%] vs. 18[25.35%], P

South China Sea Operational Oceanography Forecasting System (SCSOFS) had been constructed and operated in National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center of China to provide daily updated hydrodynamic forecasting in SCS for the future 5 days since 2013. This paper presents recent comprehensive updates of the configurations of the physical model and data assimilation scheme in order to improve SCSOFS forecasting skills. It highlights three of the most sensitive updates, including sea surface atmospheric forcing method, tracers advection discrete scheme, and modification of data assimilation scheme. Inter-comparison and accuracy assessment among five versions during the whole upgrading processes are performed by employing OceanPredict Inter-comparison and Validation Task Team Class4 metrics. The results indicate that remarkable improvements have been achieved in SCSOFSv2 with respect to the original version known as SCSOFSv1. Domain averaged monthly mean root mean square errors decrease from 1.21 °C to 0.52 °C for sea surface temperature, from 21.6 cm to 8.5 cm for sea level anomaly, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
