By meticulously analyzing the genetic determinants, physiological processes, and environmental interactions shaping early maturation, this review offers valuable insights into the complexities of this trait and its relevance in contemporary wheat breeding programs. Furthermore, this review critically evaluates the trade-offs inherent in pursuing early maturation, navigating the delicate balance between accelerated development and optimal yield potential. Through a meticulous examination of both challenges and opportunities, this review provides a comprehensive framework for researchers, breeders, and agricultural stakeholders to advance our understanding and utilization of early maturation in bread wheat cultivars, ultimately fostering resilience and sustainability in wheat production systems worldwide.

Background: Wheat rusts are important biotic stresses, development of rust resistant cultivars through molecular approaches is both economical and sustainable. Extensive phenotyping of large mapping populations under diverse production conditions and high-density genotyping would be the ideal strategy to identify major genomic regions for rust resistance in wheat. The genome-wide association study (GWAS) population of 280 genotypes was genotyped using a 35 K Axiom single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array and phenotyped at eight, 10, and, 10 environments, respectively for stem/black rust (SR), stripe/yellow rust (YR), and leaf/brown rust (LR)., Results: Forty-one Bonferroni corrected marker-trait associations (MTAs) were identified, including 17 for SR and 24 for YR. Ten stable MTAs and their best combinations were also identified. For YR, AX-94990952 on 1A + AX-95203560 on 4A + AX-94723806 on 3D + AX-95172478 on 1A showed the best combination with an average co-efficient of infection (ACI) score of 1.36. Similarly, for SR, AX-94883961 on 7B + AX-94843704 on 1B and AX-94883961 on 7B + AX-94580041 on 3D + AX-94843704 on 1B showed the best combination with an ACI score of around 9.0. The genotype PBW827 have the best MTA combinations for both YR and SR resistance. In silico study identifies key prospective candidate genes that are located within MTA regions. Further, the expression analysis revealed that 18 transcripts were upregulated to the tune of more than 1.5 folds including 19.36 folds (TraesCS3D02G519600) and 7.23 folds (TraesCS2D02G038900) under stress conditions compared to the control conditions. Furthermore, highly expressed genes in silico under stress conditions were analyzed to find out the potential links to the rust phenotype, and all four genes were found to be associated with the rust phenotype., Conclusion: The identified novel MTAs, particularly stable and highly expressed MTAs are valuable for further validation and subsequent application in wheat rust resistance breeding. Wheat stem rust, caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici ( Pgt ), has re-emerged as one of the major concerns for global wheat production since the evolution of Ug99 and other virulent pathotypes of Pgt from East Africa, Europe, Central Asia, and other regions. Host resistance is the most effective, economic, and eco-friendly approach for managing stem rust. Understanding the virulence nature, genetic diversity, origin, distribution, and evolutionary pattern of Pgt pathotypes over time and space is a prerequisite for effectively managing newly emerging Pgt isolates through host resistance. In the present study, we monitored the occurrence of stem rust of wheat in India and neighboring countries from 2016 to 2022, collected 620 single-pustule isolates of Pgt from six states of India and Nepal, analyzed them on Indian stem rust differentials, and determined their virulence phenotypes and molecular genotypes. The Ug99 type of pathotypes did not occur in India. Pathotypes 11 and 40A were most predominant during these years. Virulence phenotyping of these isolates identified 14 Pgt pathotypes, which were genotyped using 37 Puccinia spp.-specific polymorphic microsatellites, followed by additional phylogenetic analyses using DARwin. These analyses identified three major molecular groups, demonstrating fewer lineages, clonality, and long-distance migration of Pgt isolates in India. Fourteen of the 40 recently released Indian wheat varieties exhibited complete resistance to all 23 Pgt pathotypes at the seedling stage. Twelve Sr genes were postulated in 39 varieties based on their seedling response to Pgt pathotypes. The values of slow rusting parameters i.e. coefficient of infection, area under disease progress curve, and infection rates, assessed at adult plant stage at five geographically different locations during two crop seasons, indicated the slow rusting behavior of several varieties. Six Sr genes ( Sr2 , Sr57 , Sr58 , Sr24 , Sr31 , and Sr38 ) were identified in 24 wheat varieties using molecular markers closely linked to these genes. Wheat is a major staple food crop for food security in India and South Asia. The current rate (0.8-1.2%) of genetic gain in wheat is significantly shorter than the 2.4% needed to meet future demand. The changing climate and increased yield loss due to factors such as terminal heat stress necessitate the need for climate-resilient practices to sustain wheat production. At ICAR-Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research in Karnal, Haryana, India, a new High Yield Potential Trial (HYPT) was conceptualized and subsequently conducted at six locations in the highly productive North Western Plain Zone (NWPZ). An attempt was made to harness higher wheat yields through the best pipeline genotypes suitable for early sowing and modified agronomic practices to explore the feasibility of a new approach that is profitable to farmers. The modified agronomic practices included like early sowing, application of 150% recommended dose of fertilizers, and two sprays of growth regulators (Chlormaquate chloride and Tebuconazole) to prevent lodging. The mean yield in the HYPT was 19.4% superior compared to the best trials conducted during the normal sowing time. A highly positive and significant correlation of grain yield with grain filling duration (0.51), biomass (0.73), harvest index (0.75), normalized difference vegetation Index (0.27), chlorophyll content index (0.32), and 1000-grain weight (0.62) was observed. An increased return of USD 201.95/ha was realized in the HYPT when compared to normal sowing conditions. This study proves that new integrated practices have the potential to provide the best profitable yields in wheat in the context of climate change.

Genomic regions governing grain protein content (GPC), 1000 kernel weight (TKW), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were studied in a set of 280 bread wheat genotypes. The genome-wide association (GWAS) panel was genotyped using a 35K Axiom array and phenotyped in three environments. A total of 26 marker-trait associations (MTAs) were detected on 18 chromosomes covering the A, B, and D subgenomes of bread wheat. The GPC showed the maximum MTAs (16), followed by NDVI (6), and TKW (4). A maximum of 10 MTAs was located on the B subgenome, whereas, 8 MTAs each were mapped on the A and D subgenomes. In silico analysis suggest that the SNPs were located on important putative candidate genes such as NAC domain superfamily, zinc finger RING-H2-type, aspartic peptidase domain, folylpolyglutamate synthase, serine/threonine-protein kinase LRK10, pentatricopeptide repeat, protein kinase-like domain superfamily, cytochrome P450, and expansin. These candidate genes were found to have different roles including regulation of stress tolerance, nutrient remobilization, protein accumulation, nitrogen utilization, photosynthesis, grain filling, mitochondrial function, and kernel development. The effects of newly identified MTAs will be validated in different genetic backgrounds for further utilization in marker-aided breeding.

Biofortification is gaining importance globally to improve human nutrition through enhancing the micronutrient content, such as vitamin A, iron, and zinc, in staple food crops. The present study aims to identify the chromosomal regions governing the grain iron concentration (GFeC), grain zinc concentration (GZnC), and thousand kernel weight (TKW) using recombinant inbred lines (RILs) in wheat, developed from a cross between HD3086 and HI1500. The experiment was conducted in four different production conditions at Delhi viz. , control, drought, heat, and combined heat and drought stress and at Indore under drought stress. Grain iron and zinc content increased under heat and combined stress conditions, while thousand kernel weight decreased. Medium to high heritability with a moderate correlation between grain iron and zinc was observed. Out of 4,106 polymorphic markers between the parents, 3,407 SNP markers were used for linkage map construction which spanned over a length of 14791.18 cm. QTL analysis identified a total of 32 chromosomal regions governing the traits under study, which includes 9, 11, and 12 QTLs for GFeC, GZnC, and TKW, respectively. A QTL hotspot was identified on chromosome 4B which is associated with grain iron, grain zinc, and thousand kernel weight explaining the phenotypic variance of 29.28, 10.98, and 17.53%, respectively. Similarly, common loci were identified on chromosomes 4B and 4D for grain iron, zinc, and thousand kernel weight. In silico analysis of these chromosomal regions identified putative candidate genes that code for proteins such as Inositol 1,3,4-trisphosphate 5/6-kinase, P-loop containing nucleoside triphosphate hydrolase, Pleckstrin homology (PH) domains, Serine-threonine/tyrosine-protein kinase and F-box-like domain superfamily proteins which play role in many important biochemical or physiological process. Introduction: Wheat is grown and consumed worldwide, making it an important staple food crop for both its calorific and nutritional content. In places where wheat is used as a staple food, suboptimal micronutrient content levels, especially of grain iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), can lead to malnutrition. Grain nutrient content is influenced by abiotic stresses, such as drought and heat stress. The best method for addressing micronutrient deficiencies is the biofortification of food crops. The prerequisites for marker-assisted varietal development are the identification of the genomic region responsible for high grain iron and zinc contents and an understanding of their genetics., Methods: A total of 193 diverse wheat genotypes were evaluated under drought and heat stress conditions across the years at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, under timely sown irrigated (IR), restricted irrigated (RI) and late sown (LS) conditions. Grain iron content (GFeC) and grain zinc content (GZnC) were estimated from both the control and treatment groups. Genotyping of all the lines under study was carried out with the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from Breeder's 35K Axiom Array., Result and Discussion: Three subgroups were observed in the association panel based on both principal component analysis (PCA) and dendrogram analysis. A large whole-genome linkage disequilibrium (LD) block size of 3.49 Mb was observed. A genome-wide association study identified 16 unique stringent marker trait associations for GFeC, GZnC, and 1000-grain weight (TGW). In silico analysis demonstrated the presence of 28 potential candidate genes in the flanking region of 16 linked SNPs, such as synaptotagmin-like mitochondrial-lipid-binding domain, HAUS augmin-like complex, di-copper center-containing domain, protein kinase, chaperonin Cpn60, zinc finger, NUDIX hydrolase, etc. Expression levels of these genes in vegetative tissues and grain were also found. Undernourishment of nutrients, also known as hidden hunger, affects over 2 billion populace globally. Even though stunting among children below five years of age has decreased in India in the last ten years, India is home to roughly thirty percent of the world's population of stunted pre-schoolers. A significant improvement has been witnessed in the targeted development and deployment of biofortified crops; approximately 20 million farm households from developing counties benefit from cultivating and consuming biofortified crops. There is ample scope for including biofortified varieties in the seed chain, ensuring nutritional security. Wheat is a dietary staple in India, typically consumed as wholemeal flour in the form of flatbreads such as chapatti and roti . Wheat contributes to nearly one fifth of global energy requirements and can also provide better amounts of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn). As a result, biofortified wheat can serve as a medium for delivery of essential micronutrients such as Fe and Zn to end users. This review discusses wheat biofortification components such as Fe and Zn dynamics, its uptake and movement in plants, the genetics of their buildup, and the inclusion of biofortified wheat varieties in the seed multiplication chain concerning India.

Aphids are one of the most important insect pests of wheat crop in all wheat growing regions of the world. Amongst various aphid species, the corn leaf aphid ( Rhopalosiphum maidis F.) is considered one of the most destructive insect pests of wheat in the North Western Plains region of India. Transcriptome profiling of highly susceptible wheat Triticum durum genotype, A-9-30-1 and tolerant wheat Triticum aestivum genotype, HD2967 was performed to investigate aphid-host interactions. The results obtained from differential gene expression analysis of R. maidis on the highly susceptible genotype, A-9-30-1 plants, when compared with the tolerant genotype, HD2967, showed that 212 genes were significantly upregulated and 1009 genes were significantly downregulated. Our findings demonstrated that the genes associated with defense were significantly higher in response to R. maidis on HD2967 as compared to A-9-30-1. Additionally, various genes with physiological attributes were expressed during aphid attack. Based on gene ontology classification, three classifications, such as, cellular components (CC), molecular function (MF), and biological processes (BP) of sequences were identified. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that twenty-five pathway genes were differentially expressed during the infestation of wheat with R. maidis . Notable changes were observed in A-9-30-1 and HD2967 transcriptomic profiling after infestation. Wheat is the staple food crop of global importance for its grain nutrient quality. Grain iron and zinc content of the wheat grain is an important quantitatively inherited trait that is influenced by the environmental factors such as drought and heat stress. Phenotypic evaluation of 295 advanced breeding lines from the wheat stress breeding program of IARI was carried out under timely sown irrigated (IR), restricted irrigated, and late-sown conditions at New Delhi during the cropping season of 2020-21, and grain iron (GFeC) and zinc (GZnC) contents were estimated from both control and treatments. A statistically significant increase in GFeC and GZnC was observed under stress conditions compared to that of the control. Genotyping was carried out with the SNPs from the 35K Axiom Breeder's array, and marker-trait association was identified by GWAS analysis. Of the 23 MTAs identified, seven were linked with GFeC and sixteen were linked with GZnC. In silico analysis revealed a few important transcripts involved in various plant metabolism, growth, and development activities such as auxin response factor , root UVB sensitive proteins , potassium transporter , glycosyl transferase , COBRA , and F-box-like domain. Genomic regions governing days to heading (DH), grain filling duration (GFD), grain number per spike (GNPS), grain weight per spike (GWPS), plant height (PH), and grain yield (GY) were investigated in a set of 280 diverse bread wheat genotypes. The genome-wide association studies (GWAS) panel was genotyped using a 35K Axiom Array and phenotyped in five environments. The GWAS analysis showed a total of 27 Bonferroni-corrected marker-trait associations (MTAs) on 15 chromosomes representing all three wheat subgenomes. The GFD showed the highest MTAs (8), followed by GWPS (7), GY (4), GNPS (3), PH (3), and DH (2). Furthermore, 20 MTAs were identified with more than 10% phenotypic variation. A total of five stable MTAs ( AX-95024590, AX-94425015, AX-95210025 AX-94539354 , and AX-94978133 ) were identified in more than one environment and associated with the expression of DH, GFD, GNPS, and GY. Similarly, two novel pleiotropic genomic regions with associated MTAs i.e. AX-94978133 (4D) and AX-94539354 (6A) harboring co-localized QTLs governing two or more traits were also identified. In silico analysis revealed that the SNPs were located on important putative candidate genes such as F-box-like domain superfamily, Lateral organ boundaries, LOB, Thioredoxin-like superfamily Glutathione S-transferase , RNA-binding domain superfamily , UDP-glycosyltransferase family, Serine/threonine-protein kinase , Expansin , Patatin, Exocyst complex component Exo70, DUF1618 domain, Protein kinase domain involved in the regulation of grain size, grain number, growth and development, grain filling duration, and abiotic stress tolerance. Genomic regions governing grain iron concentration (GFeC), grain zinc concentration (GZnC), and thousand kernel weight (TKW) were investigated in a set of 280 diverse bread wheat genotypes. The genome-wide association (GWAS) panel was genotyped using 35 K Axiom Array and phenotyped in five environments. The GWAS analysis showed a total of 17 Bonferroni-corrected marker-trait associations (MTAs) in nine chromosomes representing all the three wheat subgenomes. The TKW showed the highest MTAs (7), followed by GZnC (5) and GFeC (5). Furthermore, 14 MTAs were identified with more than 10% phenotypic variation. One stable MTA i.e. AX-95025823 was identified for TKW in both E4 and E5 environments along with pooled data, which is located at 68.9 Mb on 6A chromosome. In silico analysis revealed that the SNPs were located on important putative candidate genes such as Multi antimicrobial extrusion protein, F-box domain, Late embryogenesis abundant protein, LEA-18, Leucine-rich repeat domain superfamily, and C3H4 type zinc finger protein, involved in iron translocation, iron and zinc homeostasis, and grain size modifications. The identified novel MTAs will be validated to estimate their effects in different genetic backgrounds for subsequent use in marker-assisted selection. Annually, the cost of insect pest control in agriculture crosses billions of dollars around the world. Until recently, broad-spectrum synthetic pesticides were considered as the most effective means of pest control in agriculture. However, over the years, the overreliance on pesticides has caused adverse effects on beneficial insects, human health and the environment, and has led to the development of pesticide resistant insects. There is a critical need for the development of alternative pest management strategies aiming for minimum use of pesticides and conservation of natural enemies for maintaining the ecological balance of the environment. Host plant resistance plays a vital role in integrated pest management but the development of insect-resistant varieties through conventional ways of host plant resistance takes time, and is challenging as it involves many quantitative traits positioned at various loci. Biotechnological approaches such as gene editing, gene transformation, marker-assisted selection etc. in this direction have recently opened up a new era of insect control options. These could contribute towards about exploring a much wider array of novel insecticidal genes that would otherwise be beyond the scope of conventional breeding. Biotechnological interventions can alter the gene expression level and pattern as well as the development of transgenic varieties with insecticidal genes and can improve pest management by providing access to novel molecules. Farmers in northwestern and central India have been exploring to sow their wheat much earlier (October) than normal (November) to sustain productivity by escaping terminal heat stress and to utilize the available soil moisture after the harvesting of rice crop. However, current popular varieties are poorly adapted to early sowing due to the exposure of juvenile plants to the warmer temperatures in the month of October and early November. Therefore, a study was undertaken to identify wheat genotypes suited to October sowing under warmer temperatures in India. A diverse collection of 3322 bread wheat varieties and elite lines was prepared in CIMMYT, Mexico, and planted in the 3rd week of October during the crop season 2012-2013 in six locations (Ludhiana, Karnal, New Delhi, Indore, Pune and Dharwad) spread over northwestern plains zone (NWPZ) and central and Peninsular zone (CZ and PZ; designated as CPZ) of India. Agronomic traits data from the seedling stage to maturity were recorded. Results indicated substantial diversity for yield and yield-associated traits, with some lines showing indications of higher yields under October sowing. Based on agronomic performance and disease resistance, the top 48 lines (and two local checks) were identified and planted in the next crop season (2013-2014) in a replicated trial in all six locations under October sowing (third week). High yielding lines that could tolerate higher temperature in October sowing were identified for both zones; however, performance for grain yield was more promising in the NWPZ. Hence, a new trial of 30 lines was planted only in NWPZ under October sowing. Lines showing significantly superior yield over the best check and the most popular cultivars in the zone were identified. The study suggested that agronomically superior wheat varieties with early heat tolerance can be obtained that can provide yield up to 8 t/ha by planting in the third to fourth week of October.

An increase in the rate of crop improvement is essential for achieving sustained food production and other needs of ever-increasing population. Genomic selection (GS) is a potential breeding tool that has been successfully employed in animal breeding and is being incorporated into plant breeding. GS promises accelerated breeding cycles through a rapid selection of superior genotypes. Numerous empirical and simulation studies on GS and realized impacts on improvement in the crop yields are recently being reported. For a holistic understanding of the technology, we briefly discuss the concept of genetic gain, GS methodology, its current status, advantages of GS over other breeding methods, prediction models, and the factors controlling prediction accuracy in GS. Also, integration of speed breeding and other novel technologies viz. high throughput genotyping and phenotyping technologies for enhancing the efficiency and pace of GS, followed by its prospective applications in varietal development programs is reviewed., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Stripe or yellow rust (YR) caused by Puccinia striiformis Westend. f. sp. tritici Erikss. is a persistent biotic-stress threatening global wheat production. To broaden our understanding of the shared genetic basis of YR resistance across multi-site and multi-year evaluations, we performed a large genome-wide association study using 43,706 YR observations on 23,346 wheat lines from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center evaluated between 2013 and 2019 at sites in India, Kenya and Mexico, against predominant races prevalent in the countries. We identified 114 repeatable markers tagging 20 quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with YR on ten chromosomes including 1D, 2A, 2B, 2D, 3A, 4A, 4D, 5A, 5B and 6B, among which four QTL, QYr.cim-2DL.2, QYr.cim-2AS.1, QYr.cim-2BS.2 and QYr.cim-2BS.3 were significant in more than ten datasets. Furthermore, we report YR-associated allelic fingerprints for the largest panel of wheat breeding lines (52,067 lines) till date, creating substantial opportunities for YR favorable allele enrichment using molecular markers. Overall, the markers and fingerprints reported in this study provide excellent insights into the genetic architecture of YR resistance in different geographical regions, time-periods and wheat germplasm and are a huge resource to the global wheat breeding community for accelerating YR resistance breeding efforts.

Crop varieties or genotypes of a given species are pivotal for agricultural production and ownership, management and improvement of their germplasm is a great challenge. Its morphological identification requires time, cost and descriptors are often compromised statistically due to phenotypic plasticity. Development of DNA based signature of varieties can overcome these limitations. There is a global need to implement world trade organization (WTO) and intellectual property rights (IPR) guidelines of Plant Breeders Rights (PBR) where DUS (distinctness, uniformity and stability) testing can be supplemented by DNA profile. Universalization and minimization of SNP number without compromising identification accuracy is the major challenge in development of varietal profile by rapid genotype assay. Besides this, there is no server-based approach reducing computational skill with global accessibility of referral phenotypic and genotypic data. We report world's first model web server for crop variety identification using >350 Indian wheat varieties and Axiom 35 K SNP chip data. Standard filtering and linkage disequilibrium approach were used to develop varietal signature in Linux using HTML, Java, PHP and MySQL with provision of QR code generator to facilitate bar-coding. Phylogenetic tree constructed by selected SNPs confirms six major trait based clusters of varieties and their pedigree. Our user friendly server based tool, VISTa (Variety Identification System of Triticum aestivum) ( http://webtom.cabgrid.res.in/vista ) can be used in DUS testing having dispute resolution of sovereignty and access benefit sharing (ABS) issues. This model approach can be used in other crops with pan-global level management of crop germplasm in endeavour of crop productivity.
