Abstract

Contamination by Persistent Organic Pollutants such as DDTs (p´p´-DDT and its metabolites p´p´-DDE and p´p´-DDD) is an important threat to soil ecosystem quality. Plant-based clean up technologies are as sustainable solutions to contaminated soil remediation. They rely on the physiological abilities of selected plants to decrease pollutants from soil through different processes occurring in the rhizosphere involving symbiotic and non-symbiotic interactions with natural microorganisms. Solanum lycopersicum is known to be able to accumulate DDTs in roots, owing to exudate production, which makes this contaminant bioavailable in soil. In this context, a greenhouse experiment was performed using pots filled with DDE-contaminated soil and watered with different kinds of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Control soils (without plant and/or DDE) were also performed. Finally, we obtained 12 different conditions. Soil and plant samples were collected 40 days after the DDE exposure. The effects of the different treatments on the natural microbial community of the rhizosphere were evaluated in terms of microbial abundance, viability, structure, dehydrogenase activity and possible DDE degradation. Moreover, roots and shoots of the tomato plants were also sampled and analysed for the determination of the pesticide bioconcentration. The main results from the different experimental conditions will be discussed.

Abstract

It was demonstrated that, by the use of four parts of wax, GR-S rubber can be compounded to experience practically no weather cracking when exposed unstressed for two years. GR-S can be so compounded as to undergo very limited weather cracking when exposed under stress for 24 months. However, the use of wax in itself is not adequate to ensure this characteristic; differences in types of wax, in compounding materials, and in methods of mixing and curing permit a wide range of results. Suitability of a specific type of rubber or formulation can be determined only by test. It was also demonstrated that low-temperature properties of military cables can be retained after exposure to desert conditions. A general correlation between tensile strength retention after exposure and weather cracking has been indicated. The results of this investigation emphasize the importance of developing a satisfactory accelerated weathering test which will more accurately predict outdoor suitability of rubber-like materials, and which can be used to compare correctly the merits of different materials.

Abstract

Microplastic (MPs) pollution has emerged as a global ecological concern, however, the impact of MPs exposure, particularly in conjunction with other pollutants such as glyphosate (GLY) on honey bee remains unknown. This study investigated the effects of exposure to different concentrations of MPs and their combination with GLY on honey bee larvae development, or during the larvae period, regulation of major detoxification, antioxidant and immune genes, and oxidative stress biomarkers. Results revealed that combined exposure to MPs and GLY decreased larvae survivorship and weight, while exposure to MPs alone showed no significant differences. Both MPs and GLY alone downregulated the defensin-1 gene, but only combined exposure with GLY downregulated the hymenoptaecin gene and increased catalase enzyme activity. The data suggest a synergistic effect of MPs and GLY, leading to immunosuppression and reduced larvae survival and weight.
