3. Linking speciation and the niche : taxonomy, phylogeny and niche evolution in neotropical Begonia

Begonia L. is one of the ten largest plant genera with >1,830 currently accepted species distributed throughout the tropical Americas, Africa and Asia. This exceptional diversity offers the opportunity to study the processes underlying recent and rapid radiations, including the theory of adaptive radiations, but also poses major challenges. Methods to test adaptive radiation theory require sufficient occurrence data to produce species distribution models for the majority of species in a group. In many groups, including Andean, Central American and Mexican Begonia, this criterion is not met. The availability of specimen data on GBIF for species distribution modelling in vascular plants as a whole was assessed. The potential contribution of databased and freely available but indetermined or non-georeferenced specimens to the field of species distribution modelling was estimated. More than half of vascular plant species are currently unavailable for species distribution modelling. Our results indicate 22% of currently unavailable species could be modelled with already available herbarium data that is not yet georeferenced or determined to species. We argue that a greater focus on georeferencing and identification skills are vital if herbaria are to contribute fully to the growing field of species distribution modelling. We highlight those families and geographic regions that would most benefit from this approach and discuss the historical factors have influenced differences among regions. Another prerequisite for species distribution modelling is a stable species level taxonomy. In preparation for investigation involving SDM’s in Begonia, five taxonomic papers are presented, including revised species concepts, distribution data suitable for use in species distribution models, seven new species and a new section of Begonia. Three plastid markers for 574 species and 809 accessions of Begonia were used to produce the largest, most representative phylogeny of Begonia published to date. An updated sectional classification of the genus is provided. The sections of Begonia are used frequently as analogues to genera in other families but, despite their taxonomic utility, few of the current sections have been examined in the light of molecular phylogenetic analyses. The relationships among some species and sections are poorly resolved, but many sections and deeper nodes receive strong support. We recognise 77 sections of Begonia including four new sections: Astrotricha, Jackia, Kollmannia, and Stellanthera; five sections are reinstated from synonymy: Australes, Exalabegonia, Latistigma, Pereira and Poecilia; and four sections are newly synonymised. The new sectional classification is discussed with reference to identifying characters and previous classifications. Central to the theory of an adaptive radiation is that the majority of speciation events are adaptive, implying speciation driven by adaptation to different environments and resulting in niche shifts. Species in an adaptive radiation should display distinct ecological niches and environmental disparity across the group’s phylogeny should best fit a kappa ‘niche-shift’ or ‘speciational’ model of character evolution. These characteristics were tested in two clades of Neotropical Begonia. Species were compared through the comparison of their distributions in environmental space calculated from species distribution models. The fit of four models of environmental evolution (a kappa ‘niche-shift’ model, a Brownian motion model, an early-burst model, and a white noise model) to the observed niche disparity in the group were assessed using the Akaike Information Criterion Patterns of ecological diversification in the two clades of Begonia examined strongly diverge from those predicted by an adaptive model, and we conclude Begonia is not an adaptive radiation with respects to climatic niche. Ecological disparity within Begonia clades best fits the predictions of a Brownian model of niche evolution. The characteristics of a Brownian model include constant niche evolution over the phylogeny, no increases in niche evolution during speciation, and independent niche evolution in sister lineages. This is incompatible with the predictions of an adaptive radiation. We suggest the remarkable diversity of the genus has developed through geographic speciation, and subsequent adaptation to local environments. This phenomenon may be widespread among plant radiations in topographically- and environmentally-heterogeneous areas, and a re-evaluation of putative adaptive radiations throughout the world’s montane regions may be necessary.

4. expowo: An R package for mining global plant diversity and distribution data.

Abstract

Premise: Data on plant distribution and diversity from natural history collections and taxonomic databases are increasingly becoming available online as exemplified by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew's Plants of the World Online (POWO) database. This growing accumulation of biodiversity information requires an advance in bioinformatic tools for accessing and processing the massive data for use in downstream science. We present herein expowo, an open‐source package that facilitates extracting and using botanical data from POWO. Methods and Results: The expowo package is implemented in R and designed to handle the entire vascular plant tree of life. It includes functions to readily distill taxonomic and distributional information about all families, genera, or species of vascular plants. It outputs a complete list of species in each genus of any plant family, with the associated original publication, synonyms, and distribution, and plots global maps of species richness at the country and botanical country levels, as well as graphs displaying species‐discovery accumulation curves and nomenclatural changes over time. To demonstrate expowo's strengths in producing easy‐to‐handle outputs, we also show empirical examples from a set of biodiverse countries and representative species‐rich and ecologically important angiosperm families. Conclusions: By harnessing bioinformatic tools that accommodate varying levels of R programming proficiency, expowo functions assist users who have limited R programming expertise in efficiently distilling specific botanical information from online sources and producing maps and graphics for the further interpretation of biogeographic and taxonomic patterns. We have not seen this specimen so, following Smith & Wasshausen (1986), treat the species as endemic to Ecuador and exclude the name from our treatment.

Abstract

Begonia anemonoides Haenke Voyages dans l’Amérique Méridionale depuis 1781-1801 2: 503 (Haenke 1809). – Type: unknown. Notes This species was described as abundant in the Andes Mountains of “Peruvia”. At the turn of the 19 th Century “Peruvia” referred to the Viceroyalty of Peru including much of modern-day Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile. It remains very unclear where Haenke encountered this species. Furthermore, no type material of the species was cited in the protologue, but it is possible that some original material remains undiscovered among the specimens housed in PR herbarium. The protologue describes the species as tuberous with flowers resembling those of an Anemone, and while this is not sufficient for identification it seems likely that this refers to a member of the octopetala group of B. sect. Eupetalum (Tebbitt 2015). The only member of the octopetala group described before 1809 was B. octopetala so B. anemonoides Haenke may be an earlier name for any other species in this group. The discovery of original material and lectotypification of B. anemonoides should be a priority for any future work on Peruvian or tuberous Andean Begonia, and if this is not possible the name should be rejected.

Begonia falcifolia Hook.f. Curtis’s Botanical Magazine 94: t. 5707 (Hooker 1868). – Type: hort. Kew; coll. unknown s.n.; holotype: K [K000739972]. Brako & Zarucchi (1993: 192); León & Monsalve (2006: 166). Notes This species was described from plants grown in the glasshouses of Kew Gardens, which J.D. Hooker stated in the protologue were collected in Peru by Pearce and given to Kew by Veitch Nurseries (Hooker 1868). The illustration and type specimen are however of a species closely allied to B. malabarica Lam., a species from southern India and Sri Lanka. Plant hunters from both Kew Gardens and Veitch Nurseries had collected in this area by this date, so it seems likely this is an Indian species whose providence was confused in either institution.

Begonia patula Haw. Supplementum Plantarum Succulentarum: 100 (Haworth 1819). – Type: unknown. Otto & Dietrich (1836: 358); Klotzsch (1855: 150); Walpers (1843a: 215, 1858: 879); de Candolle (1861: 348, 1864: 302); Smith & Schubert (1950: 245); Smith & Smith (1971: 49); Jacques & Mamede (2005: 581). Notes This name was published by Haworth based upon plants cultivated in Loddiges’ nursery in Hackney in 1816 (Haworth 1819: 100). The plants had arrived at Loddiges’ from Mr Gulielmo Anderson, who had in turn received them from Mr C.F. Otto in 1811, the inspector of Berlin Botanical Gardens. The description in the protologue is insufficient for identification and there is no illustration. Most of Haworth’s specimens are deposited in Kew and Oxford herbaria, but we have found no material labelled with this name that predates the publication of the protologue so could be considered type material. It is possible that there is original material among the cultivated material in Kew or Berlin herbarium. We however consider it extremely unlikely that it will ever be possible to determine to which species this name belongs and follow Jacques & Mamede (2005) in suggesting the name is rejected. We cite B. patula Haw. here because it has frequently been considered the same species as B. fischeri and was published earlier. The first suggestion of this derives from the protologue of B. pauciflora (Lindley 1820: t. 471), which is now considered a synonym of B. fischeri. Lindley considered B. patula Haw. a probable synonym of B. pauciflora, contrary to the principle of priority. Haworth (1821b: cc) later published an addendum in Edward’s Botanical Register, which stated that B. pauciflora and B. patula Haw. were different species. Later authors including Walpers (1843a: 215), Klotzsch (1855: 150), and Smith & Schubert (1950: 245) disregarded this and considered B. patula Haw. an earlier name for B. pauciflora. Alphonse de Candolle (1861: 348; 1864: 302) further confused matters by citing Klotzsch’s 1855 citation of B. patula Haw. as ‘ Begonia patula Klotzsch’, excluding B. paucifolia from the citation and only doubtfully including B. patula Haw. in synonymy. Smith & Wasshausen (1979) were the first to recognise that B. patula Haw. may not be the same species as B. pauciflora, and also the first to cite B. fischeri as the same species as B. pauciflora. In the synonymy of B. fischeri, they cited ‘ Begonia patula sensu Klotzsch non Haw.&rsquo

Abstract

The Caatinga biome in Brazil comprises the largest and most continuous expanse of the seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) worldwide; nevertheless, it is among the most threatened and least studied, despite its ecological and biogeographical importance. The spatial distribution of volumetric wood stocks in the Caatinga and the relationship with environmental factors remain unknown. Therefore, this study intends to quantify and analyze the spatial distribution of wood volume as a function of environmental variables in Caatinga vegetation in Bahia State, Brazil. Volumetric estimates were obtained at the plot and fragment level. The multiple linear regression techniques were adopted, using environmental variables in the area as predictors. Spatial modeling was performed using the geostatistical kriging approach with the model residuals. The model developed presented a reasonable fit for the volume m3 ha with r2 of 0.54 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 10.9 m3 ha–1. The kriging of ordinary residuals suggested low error estimates in unsampled locations and balance in the under and overestimates of the model. The regression kriging approach provided greater detailing of the global wood volume stock map, yielding volume estimates that ranged from 0.01 to 109 m3 ha–1. Elevation, mean annual temperature, and precipitation of the driest month are strong environmental predictors for volume estimation. This information is necessary to development action plans for sustainable management and use of the Caatinga SDTF in Bahia State, Brazil.

Abstract

Climate change is being intensified by anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gasses, highlighting the value of forests for carbon dioxide storing carbon in their biomass. Seasonally dry tropical forests are a neglected, threatened, but potentially critical biome for helping mitigate climate change. In South Amer-ica, knowing the amount and distribution of carbon in Caatinga seasonally dry vegetation is essential to understand its contribution to the global carbon cy-cle and subsequently design a strategic plan for its conservation. The present study aimed to model and map the spatial distribution of the potential forest biomass stock across 32 forest fragments of Caatinga, in the state of Bahia, Brazil, using regression kriging and Inverse Square of Distance techniques, building from point measurements of vegetation biomass made on-the-ground in ecological plots. First, a model for estimating biomass was fitted as a function of environmental variables to apply regression kriging, and then applied to the maps of the selected components. Elevation, temperature, and precipitation explained 46% of the biomass variations in the Caatinga. The model residuals showed strong spatial dependence and were mapped based on geo-statistical criteria, selecting the spherical semivariogram model for interpola-tion by ordinary kriging. Biomass was also mapped by the Inverse Square of Distance approach. The quality of the regression model suggests that there is good potential for estimating biomass here from environmental variables. The regression kriging showed greater detail in the spatial distribution and revealed a spatial trend of increasing biomass from the north to south of the do-main. Additional studies with greater sampling intensity and the use of other explanatory variables are suggested to improve the model, as well as to maxi-mize the technique’s ability to capture the actual biomass behavior in this newly studied seasonally dry ecosystem.

Abstract

Keraunea is an enigmatic genus of lianescent shrubs endemic to Brazil and found within the Caatinga and Mata Atlântica phytogeographic regions. When first published, Keraunea was included in the Convolvulaceae and there has been considerable recent disagreement about its true family placement on the Angiosperm tree of life. Based on further assessment of morphology and a new comprehensively-sampled combined phylogenetic analysis of nuclear and plastid genes from recently published DNA sequence data, we settle the position of the genus within the Ehretiaceae as sister to the Australian genus Halgania Gaudich. and provide an expanded family description. We recognize five species within Keraunea, three of them newly described here: K. brasiliensis Cheek & Simão-Bianchini, K. bullata Moonlight & D.B.O.S.Cardoso, sp. nov., K. capixaba Lombardi, K. confusa Moonlight & D.B.O.S.Cardoso, sp. nov. and K. velutina Moonlight & D.B.O.S.Cardoso, sp. nov. We also provide a full taxonomic revision of the genus, including a key, descriptions, map of geographical distribution and provisional IUCN threat assessments for all species.

There is high potential for ecosystem restoration across tropical savannah-dominated regions, but the benefits that could be gained from this restoration are rarely assessed. This study focuses on the Brazilian Cerrado, a highly species-rich savannah-dominated region, as an exemplar to review potential restoration benefits using three metrics: net biomass gains, plant species richness and ability to connect restored and native vegetation. Localized estimates of the most appropriate restoration vegetation type (grassland, savannah, woodland/forest) for pasturelands are produced. Carbon sequestration potential is significant for savannah and woodland/forest restoration in the seasonally dry tropics (net biomass gains of 58.2 ± 37.7 and 130.0 ± 69.4 Mg ha−1). Modelled restoration species richness gains were highest in the central and south-east of the Cerrado for savannahs and grasslands, and in the west and north-west for woodlands/forests. The potential to initiate restoration projects across the whole of the Cerrado is high and four hotspot areas are identified. We demonstrate that landscape restoration across all vegetation types within heterogeneous tropical savannah-dominated regions can maximize biodiversity and carbon gains. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science. In the future, humanity can benefit greatly by nurturing the grassroots communities now collectively capable of generating unique, long-term understanding of Earth's most precious forests. Resumen: Los bosques tropicales son los ecosistemas más diversos y productivos del mundo y entender su funcionamiento es crítico para nuestro futuro colectivo. Sin embargo, hasta hace muy poco, los esfuerzos para medirlos y monitorearlos han estado muy desconectados. El trabajo en redes es esencial para descubrir las respuestas a preguntas que trascienden las fronteras y los plazos de las agencias de financiamiento. Esta duradoura colaboração pantropical revelou um grande sumidouro de carbono persistente e suas tendências, assim como tem evidenciado quais direcionadores são mais importantes, quais processos florestais são mais afetados, onde eles estão mudando, seus atrasos no tempo de resposta, e as prováveis respostas das florestas tropicais conforme o clima continua a mudar. Dessa forma, aproveitando uma notável tecnologia antiga, redes de parcelas acendem faíscas de uma moderna revolução na ciência das florestas tropicais. No futuro a humanidade pode se beneficiar incentivando estas comunidades basais que agora são coletivamente capazes de gerar conhecimentos únicos e duradouros sobre as florestas mais preciosas da Terra. Résume: Les forêts tropicales sont les écosystèmes les plus diversifiés et les plus productifs de la planète. Si une meilleure compréhension de ces forêts est essentielle pour notre avenir collectif, jusqu'à tout récemment, les efforts déployés pour les mesurer et les surveiller ont été largement déconnectés. La mise en réseau est essentielle pour découvrir les réponses à des questions qui dépassent les frontières et les horizons des organismes de financement. Nous montrons ici comment une communauté mondiale relève les défis de la recherche sur les écosystèmes tropicaux avec diverses équipes qui mesurent les forêts arbre après arbre dans de milliers de parcelles permanentes. Nous passons en revue les principales découvertes scientifiques de ces travaux et montrons comment ce processus modifie la science des forêts tropicales. Notre approche principale consiste à relier les initiatives de base à long terme à des protocoles standardisés et une gestion de données afin de générer des résultats solides à grande échelle. En reliant les chercheurs tropicaux et en élevant leur statut, notre modèle de réseau de recherche sociale reconnaît le rôle clé de l'auteur des données dans la découverte scientifique. Conçus en 1999 avec RAINFOR (Amérique du Sud), nos réseaux de parcelles permanentes ont été adaptés à l'Afrique (AfriTRON) et à l'Asie du Sud-Est (T-FORCES) et largement imités dans le monde entier. Ces multiples initiatives sont désormais intégrées via l'infrastructure ForestPlots.net, qui relie des collègues de 54 pays à travers 24 réseaux de parcelles. Ensemble, elles transforment la compréhension des forêts tropicales et de leur rôle biosphérique. Ensemble, nous avons découvert comment, où et pourquoi le carbone forestier et la biodiversité réagissent au changement climatique, et comment ils y réagissent. Cette collaboration pan-tropicale à long terme a révélé un important puits de carbone à long terme et ses tendances, tout en mettant en évidence les facteurs les plus importants, les processus forestiers qui sont affectés, les endroits où ils changent, les décalages et les réactions futures probables des forêts tropicales à mesure que le climat continue de changer. Abstrak: Hutan tropika adalah di antara ekosistem yang paling produktif dan mempunyai kepelbagaian biodiversiti yang tinggi di seluruh dunia. Walaupun pemahaman mengenai hutan tropika amat penting untuk masa depan kita, usaha-usaha untuk mengkaji dan mengawas hutah-hutan tersebut baru sekarang menjadi lebih diperhubungkan. Perangkaian adalah sangat penting untuk mencari jawapan kepada soalan-soalan yang menjangkaui sempadan dan batasan agensi pendanaan. Di sini kami menunjukkan bagaimana sebuah komuniti global bertindak balas terhadap cabaran penyelidikan ekosistem tropika melalui penglibatan pelbagai kumpulan yang mengukur hutan secara pokok demi pokok dalam beribu-ribu plot jangka panjang. Abstract

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. Abstract

Understanding of tropical forests has been revolutionized by monitoring in permanent plots. Data from global plot networks have transformed our knowledge of forests’ diversity, function, contribution to global biogeochemical cycles, and sensitivity to climate change. Monitoring has thus far been concentrated in rain forests. Despite increasing appreciation of their threatened status, biodiversity, and importance to the global carbon cycle, monitoring in tropical dry forests is still in its infancy. We provide a protocol for permanent monitoring plots in tropical dry forests. Expanding monitoring into dry biomes is critical for overcoming the linked challenges of climate change, land use change, and the biodiversity crisis.

Abstract

Begonia sect. Microtuberosa Moonlight & Tebbitt sect. nov. http://www.ipni.org/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:77160200-1 Diagnosis Begonia sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. is most closely related to B. sect. Trachelocarpus and three species of B. sect. Gaerdtia. Both of these sections are endemic to eastern Brazil and differ markedly from sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. in both their habit and Foral characteristics (see Table 1). However, all three sections share their Flaments fused at least at the base and B. sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. further shares its androecium morphology with B. sect. Pereira and its lack of bracteoles with B. sect. Trachelocarpus. The majority of both Foral and vegetative characters are, however, markedly different among the three sections. Begonia sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. is readily identiFed as the only Neotropical section of Begonia with male Fowers with four or fewer stamens, and the combination of ovaries with two or three locules and entire placentas, and a tuberous habit. Etymology The name ��� Microtuberosa ��� emphasises the diminutive and tuberous habit of the type species. Type species Begonia elachista Moonlight & Tebbitt sp. nov. Description Caulescent, tuberous herbs, perennial. Stems erect. Stipules persistent, entire. Leaves alternate, 2���4(���6), basiFxed, blade symmetrical or subsymmetrical, veins palmate. InForescence axillary, an asymmetric dichasial cyme, protandrous, bracts persistent. Male Fowers: with 2���4 free perianth segments; stamens 2 or 4, Flaments united into a column for more than half their length, anthers elliptic, dehiscing via lateral slits, connective not projecting. Female Fowers: bracteoles absent, with 2���3 free perianth segments; ovary and fruit with 2���3 wings, wings equal, 2���3-locular, placentas entire, bearing ovules on both surfaces; styles 2���3, free to base, biFd from about ⅔ their height, stigmatic papillae in a once spirally twisted band. Distribution and habitat Begonia elachista sp. nov. is known only from the type locality in the Peruvian region of Pasco (Oxapampa Province) and has been collected on calcareous rocks by the entrance to a cave within primary lowland Amazonian forest, at an altitude of 430 m. It was observed growing on rocks free from other vascular plants in association with various bryophyte species in the almost continual shade of the surrounding forest. Conservation status The known range of B. elachista sp. nov. consists of the area immediately around a single cave mouth and nearby limestone outcrops in sector Paujil of Parque Nacional Yanachaga-Chemill��n (AOO B. elachista sp. nov. as Critically Endangered: CR B2 ab(iii) (IUCN 2001). Discussion The tuberous habit and western South American range of B. elachista sp. nov. suggest a close relationship with other tuberous Andean species of Begonia but this is not supported by our analysis. The majority of tuberous Andean Begonia species are currently classiFed in B. sect. Eupetalum, which is distinguished by its geophytic tubers or Feshy rhizomes and relatively large Fowers (Doorenbos et al. 1998; Tebbitt 2015). All other tuberous Andean species are classiFed within B. sect. Barya, B. sect. Knesebeckia and B. sect. Quadriperigonia, and all four sections differ from B. elachista sp. nov. in a suite of characters including their biFd placentae (except B. lutea L.B.Sm. & B.G.Schub.), more numerous stamens and female tepals, and much larger size. We resolve B. sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. as distantly related to all tuberous species of Andean Begonia and most closely related to rhizomatous and scandent sections from southeast South America. The morphological differences between B. sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. and these sections are outlined above (Table 1) and, in combination with the placement of B. elachista sp. nov. outside of these sections, strongly support the description of a new section. The large morphological disparity between B. elachista sp. nov. and its nearest relatives is typical of that found in limestone cave endemics (Chung et al. 2014). Such species are typically small, often tuberous or rhizomatous, and usually have relatively symmetrical leaves and small, white Fowers. Examples of this syndrome in Begonia are found across sections and continents and include B. antsingyensis Humb. ex Keraudren & Bosser sect. Quadrilobaria A.DC. (Madagascar); B. cavum Ziesenh. sect. Knesebeckia (Klotzsch) A.DC. (Mexico); B. hoehneana Irmsch. sect. Unassigned (Brazil); B. exigua Irmsch. sect. Begonia (Brazil); B. minuscula Aver. sect. Reichenheimea (Klotzsch) A.DC. (Vietnam); B. schulziana Urb. & Ekman sect. Begonia (Haiti); B. speluncae Ridl. sect. Reichenheimea (Klotzsch) A.DC. (Borneo); and many others. This striking convergence among unrelated Begonia species on similar substrates in Begonia is worthy of further investigation. That B. sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. is nested within a group of eastern Brazilian species suggests it represents an independent dispersal across the Amazon basin, in addition to those identiFed in Moonlight et al. (2015). The majority of lowland Amazonia represents unsuitable habitat for most Begonia species but the genus appears to have dispersed across the area multiple times. The discovery of a further dispersal event highlights the abundance of ���rare��� long-distance dispersal events within Begonia. Begonia elachista sp. nov. is one of a number of recently described species of Peruvian Begonia. The number of species known from this country has risen from the 34 covered in the Flora of Peru (Smith & Schubert 1941) to more than 75 today (Hughes et al. 2015). This continued rapid rate of species discovery suggests many more species may remain undiscovered within the country, particularly in limestone areas. A number of species are contenders for the world���s smallest Begonia, and many have been designated epithets emphasising their diminutive statures. The Frst of these was B. minor Jacq. in 1787, although in this case the name only implied it was slightly smaller than the 20 or so species previously described, and it still grows to more than 1 m. Perhaps the most delicate known Begonia species is the Malaysian B. sibthorpioides Ridl., whose leaves and Fowers are both smaller than those of B. elachista sp. nov.; however, the stem of B. sibthorpioides trails to 10 cm. Malagasy Begonia also include a number of tiny species, including B. leandrii Humb., B. nana L���H��r. and B. perpusilla A.DC., while the smallest mainland African species is B. wilksii Sosef, but all exceed the 3 cm total height of B. elachista sp. nov. in either their inForescence height or petiole length. The recently described Vietnamese B. minuscula Aver. and Sumatran B. lilliputana M.Hughes are both small, but the rhizomes of the former reach 6 cm while the leaf length of the latter equals the entire height of B. elachista sp. nov. Begonia sleumeri L.B.Sm. & B.G.Schub. is particularly notable in being a small tuberous species from Andean South America. This Argentinian species has smaller leaf blades of a similar size (1���3.1 �� 1.4���4.6 cm) to B. elachista sp. nov. but has larger tubers (0.5���2 cm in diam.), sometimes has taller stems (up to 4.5 cm tall), often has longer petioles (1.2���5.3 cm long), and almost always has larger Fowers. Abstract

The world’s smallest Begonia, Begonia elachista Moonlight & Tebbitt sp. nov., is described and illustrated from a limestone outcrop in the Amazonian lowlands of Pasco Region, Peru. It is placed within the newly described, monotypic Begonia sect. Microtuberosa Moonlight & Tebbitt sect. nov. and the phylogenetic affinities of the section are examined. Begonia elachista sp. nov. is considered Critically Endangered under the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria.

Abstract

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. Abstract

Begonia L. is one of the ten largest plant genera with >1,830 currently accepted species distributed throughout the tropical Americas, Africa and Asia. This exceptional diversity offers the opportunity to study the processes underlying recent and rapid radiations, including the theory of adaptive radiations, but also poses major challenges. Methods to test adaptive radiation theory require sufficient occurrence data to produce species distribution models for the majority of species in a group. In many groups, including Andean, Central American and Mexican Begonia, this criterion is not met. The availability of specimen data on GBIF for species distribution modelling in vascular plants as a whole was assessed. The potential contribution of databased and freely available but indetermined or non-georeferenced specimens to the field of species distribution modelling was estimated. More than half of vascular plant species are currently unavailable for species distribution modelling. Our results indicate 22% of currently unavailable species could be modelled with already available herbarium data that is not yet georeferenced or determined to species. We argue that a greater focus on georeferencing and identification skills are vital if herbaria are to contribute fully to the growing field of species distribution modelling. We highlight those families and geographic regions that would most benefit from this approach and discuss the historical factors have influenced differences among regions. Another prerequisite for species distribution modelling is a stable species level taxonomy. In preparation for investigation involving SDM’s in Begonia, five taxonomic papers are presented, including revised species concepts, distribution data suitable for use in species distribution models, seven new species and a new section of Begonia.
